Whey powder acts as a substrate to aid in the growth of bacteria. At this site, microorganisms break down the carcinogenic compound trichloroethylene (TCE), which is a process seen in previous studies.
The former Shell Haven Refinery in Standford-le-Hope which underwent bioremediation to minimize the oil contaminated site. Bioremediation techniques, such as windrows, were used to promote oxygen transfer. The refinery has excavated approximately 115,000 m3 of contaminated soil.
