Extended play

An extended play is a musical recording that contains more tracks than a single, but is usually unqualified as an album or LP. EPs generally do not contain as many tracks as albums, and are considered less expensive, an EP originally referred to specific types of vinyl records other than 78 rpm standard play and LP, but it is now applied to mid-length CDs and downloads as well. Ricardo Baca of The Denver Post said, EPs—originally extended-play single releases that are shorter than traditional albums—have long been popular with punk, in the United Kingdom, the Official Chart Company defines a boundary between EP and album classification at 25 minutes of length or four tracks. EPs were released in various sizes in different eras, the earliest multi-track records, issued around 1919 by Grey Gull Records, were vertically cut 78 rpm discs known as 2-in-1 records. These had finer than usual grooves, like Edison Disc Records, by 1949, when the 45 rpm single and 33 1⁄3 rpm LP were competing formats, seven-inch 45 rpm singles had a maximum playing time of only about four minutes per side. Partly as an attempt to compete with the LP introduced in 1948 by rival Columbia, RCA Victor introduced Extended Play 45s during 1952. Their narrower grooves, achieved by lowering the levels and sound compression optionally. These were usually 10-inch LPs split onto two seven-inch EPs or 12-inch LPs split onto three seven-inch EPs, either separately or together in gatefold covers. This practice became less common with the advent of triple-speed-available phonographs. Some classical music albums released at the beginning of the LP era were distributed as EP albums—notably the seven operas that Arturo Toscanini conducted on radio between 1944 and 1954. These opera EPs, originally broadcast on the NBC Radio network and manufactured by RCA, in the 1990s, they began appearing on compact discs. During the 1950s, RCA published several EP albums of Walt Disney movies and these usually featured the original casts of actors and actresses. Each album contained two seven-inch records, plus an illustrated booklet containing the text of the recording, so that children could follow along by reading. Some of the titles included Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and what was then a recent release, because of the popularity of 7 and other formats, SP records became less popular and the production of SPs in Japan was suspended in 1963. In the 1950s and 1960s, EPs were usually compilations of singles or album samplers and were played at 45 rpm on seven-inch discs. Record Retailer printed the first EP chart in 1960, the New Musical Express, Melody Maker, Disc and Music Echo and the Record Mirror continued to list EPs on their respective singles charts. The Beatles Twist and Shout outsold most singles for some weeks in 1963, when the BBC and Record Retailer commissioned the British Market Research Bureau to compile a chart it was restricted to singles and EPs disappeared from the listings. In the Philippines, seven-inch EPs marketed as mini-LPs were introduced in 1970, with tracks selected from an album and this mini-LP format also became popular in America in the early 1970s for promotional releases, and also for use in jukeboxes

U-KISS

U-KISS is a South Korean boy band formed by NH Media in 2008. Their name is an acronym, standing for Ubiquitous Korean International Idol Super Star, the groups current lineup is composed of Soohyun, Eli, Kiseop, Hoon and Jun. Their breakthrough hit was Man Man Ha Ni from their EP Conti UKISS, U-KISS is known for their international popularity, especially in Latin America where they have conducted various tours. They released their first full-length album Only One on February 3,2010, in September 2011, U-KISS released their second full-length album, NEVERLAND. They made their debut in Japan in 2011 with the release of the single Tick Tack. Their second Japanese single was entitled Forbidden Love while their first Japanese full-length album was A Shared Dream, since their debut, the group has released three full-length albums, eleven mini-albums/EPs, one special mini-album, and various singles. They have also released five Japanese full-length albums, one Japanese compilation album, the group has also participated in various TV reality shows and films. U-KISS was first formed as a six-member boy-group in 2008, kibum and Kevin were members of the boy band XING but left the group in early 2007. The other four members were all selected by NH Media through auditions. U-KISS debuted in Japan on August 15,2008 at the Power of Atamix 08. The group debuted in South Korea on August 28,2008 with a release of their first mini album, New Generation, on September 3,2008, even though they were newcomers in the industry, U-KISS was considered for Japan-Korea collaborative project. A popular entertainment company, Yashimoto Group in Japan, invested 150 billion KRW to groom U-KISS as a known group. U-KISS released their second mini-album Bring It Back 2 Old School in 2009 with its title song, the third mini-album titled Conti UKISS launched Kiseop as the seventh member of the group. The title track Man Man Ha Ni was released following a change in their line-up, the fourth mini album Break Time was released in 2010, along with their title track Shut Up. The groups first full-length album, Only One, was released on February 3,2010 spawning their highest chart-topping single in the Philippines, the album also topped Hanteo Charts, Hot Tracks, Syn-nara Records and Evan Records in just one day. U-KISS then played in Malaysia, Mongolia and Japan to promote the album, due to the said success, the group had their first major concert in the Philippines dubbed as U-KISS First Kiss Tour in Manila. Aside from their career, U-KISS also starred in their own variety shows, All About U-KISS, ‘’UKISS Vampire’’. Kevin and Xander joined Arirangs radio show Pops in Seoul hosting the All About You segment and were featured on Brave Brother’s song

Pop music

Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form in the United States and United Kingdom during the mid 1950s. The terms popular music and pop music are used interchangeably, although the former describes all music that is popular. Pop and rock were synonymous terms until the late 1960s, when they were used in opposition from each other. Although pop music is seen as just the singles charts, it is not the sum of all chart music. Pop music is eclectic, and often borrows elements from other such as urban, dance, rock, Latin. Identifying factors include generally short to medium-length songs written in a format, as well as the common use of repeated choruses, melodic tunes. David Hatch and Stephen Millward define pop music as a body of music which is distinguishable from popular, jazz, according to Pete Seeger, pop music is professional music which draws upon both folk music and fine arts music. Although pop music is seen as just the singles charts, it is not the sum of all chart music, the music charts contain songs from a variety of sources, including classical, jazz, rock, and novelty songs. Pop music, as a genre, is seen as existing and developing separately, pop music continuously evolves along with the terms definition. The term pop song was first recorded as being used in 1926, Hatch and Millward indicate that many events in the history of recording in the 1920s can be seen as the birth of the modern pop music industry, including in country, blues and hillbilly music. The Oxford Dictionary of Music states that while pops earlier meaning meant concerts appealing to a wide audience. Since the late 1950s, however, pop has had the meaning of non-classical mus, usually in the form of songs, performed by such artists as the Beatles. Grove Music Online also states that, in the early 1960s pop music competed terminologically with beat music, while in the USA its coverage overlapped with that of rock and roll. From about 1967, the term was used in opposition to the term rock music. Whereas rock aspired to authenticity and an expansion of the possibilities of music, pop was more commercial, ephemeral. It is not driven by any significant ambition except profit and commercial reward, and, in musical terms, it is essentially conservative. It is, provided from on high rather than being made from below, pop is not a do-it-yourself music but is professionally produced and packaged. The beat and the melodies tend to be simple, with limited harmonic accompaniment, the lyrics of modern pop songs typically focus on simple themes – often love and romantic relationships – although there are notable exceptions

Electropop

Electropop is a variant of synth-pop that places more emphasis on a harder, electronic sound. The genre has seen a revival of popularity and influence since the 2000s, the media in 2009 ran articles proclaiming a new era of different electropop stars and indeed, saw a rise in popularity of several electropop artists. In the Sound of 2009 poll of 130 music experts conducted for the BBC, lady Gaga had major commercial success since 2008 with her debut album The Fame. Music writer Simon Reynolds noted that Everything about Gaga came from electroclash, except the music, the second album by British singer Lily Allen released in 2009 called Its Not Me, Its You is largely electropop as opposed to her first ska album. Other female electropop acts that emerged were Ladyhawke, Kesha, Demi Lovato, Britney Spears, Selena Gomez, Elly Jackson of La Roux and Perfume. The Korean pop music scene has become dominated and influenced by electropop, particularly with boy bands and girl groups such as Super Junior, SHINee, F. Male acts that have emerged included British writer and producer Taio Cruz, who charted well in the U. S. along with one-man act Owl City, who had a U. S. number-one single, DJ Kaskade, and LMFAO. Singer Michael Angelakos of the Passion Pit said in a 2009 interview that while playing electropop was not his intention, so everything weve been put on to is electronic in nature. Sony Music

Sony Music Entertainment is an American music company owned by Sony. It is incorporated as a partnership of Sony Music Holdings Inc. through Sony Entertainment. The company was first founded in 1929 as American Record Corporation and renamed Columbia Recording Corporation in 1938, in 1966, the company was reorganized to become CBS Records. Sony Corporation bought the company in 1987 and renamed it Sony Music Entertainment in 1991, the buyout led to the dissolution of BMG, which relaunched as BMG Rights Management. Sony Music Entertainment is one of the Big Three record companies, being the second largest after Universal Music Group, in 1929, ARC was founded through a merger of several record companies. In 1934, in the midst of Great Depression, the Columbia Phonograph Company, ARC was acquired in 1938 by the Columbia Broadcasting System, which, in turn, had been formed by the Columbia Phonograph Company, but then sold off. ARC was renamed Columbia Recording Corporation, RCA Victor Records executive Ted Wallerstein convinced CBS head William S. Paley to buy ARC and Paley made Wallerstein head of the newly acquired record company. The renamed company made Columbia its flagship label and Okeh its subsidiary label and this allowed ARCs leased labels Brunswick Records and Vocalion Records to revert to their former owner Warner Bros. which sold them to Decca Records. Columbia kept the Brunswick catalogue recorded from December 1931 onward on the Columbia label and he was succeeded by James Conkling as head of Columbia Records. In 1951, Columbia severed its ties with the EMI-owned record label of the same name, Okeh Records continued to be distributed by EMI on the Columbia label. Columbia founded Epic Records in 1953 and in 1956, Conkling left Columbia and he would help establish the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences before eventually becoming the first president of the newly launched Warner Bros. His successor, Goddard Lieberson began the first of two stints as head of the record company, and in 1958, Columbia founded another label, Date Records, which initially issued rockabilly music. In 1960, Columbia/CBS began negotiations with its international distributor Philips Records with the goal of starting its own global record company. Philips acquisition of US-based Mercury Records in 1961 paved the way for this, elsewhere, CBSs Mexican record company, Discos Columbia, was renamed Discos CBS by 1963. In 1964, Columbia set out acquiring record companies in countries for its CBS Records International Unit. EMI continued to distribute Epic and Okeh label material on the Columbia label in the UK until the deal with EMI expired in 1968 when CBS took over distribution. In late 1965, the Date subsidiary label was revived and this label released the first string of hits for Peaches & Herb and scored a few minor hits from various other artists. Only One (U-KISS album)

Only One is an album by South Korean boy band U-KISS. The first full-length album by the group, it was released on February 3,2010 and it features the lead single Round and Round. Before prepareations for U-KISS first full-length album, Only One was finalized, however, on February 3,2010, Bingeul Bingeul was announced as the lead single. The song was released via download on February 2 of the same year. After various performances in South Korea, Universal Records released the album in the Philippines on March 28. U-KISS set the record with the most number of albums sold in an event selling up to 5,000 copies of the album. Following this, U-KISS held their first major concert, entitled First Kiss Tour in Manila, the event was later released on DVD entitled U-KISS 1st Kiss Tour in Manila DVD. The album Only One reached number 2 on Gaons Weekly Digital Charts, on February 29,2012 a Japanese version of Bingeul Bingeul was released as a part of U-KISSs first Japanese album, A Shared Dream

Bran New Kiss

Bran New Kiss is the fifth extended play released by South Korean boy band U-KISS. It is the first EP to feature new members Hoon and AJ, in November 2010, the bands management announced that U-KISS had been recording new tracks for an upcoming EP. On March 30,2011, the released their fifth EP. This was the first single featured the two new band members, AJ and Hoon. The music video for the EPs single,0330 was released March 29, an alternate version of the music video for 0330, noted as a Drama Version, was released on April 1 via Mnet. Some lines of the song were composed by new band member, the songs music video is tells the story of the main character pretending that his girlfriend is still alive after she died at 03,30 hours. Shin Dongho is the actor for the music video. It starts with a piano in the middle of the forest with a clock switching to 03,30. Romantic scenes follow as the song goes on, but in the middle of the video and he doesnt want to accept her death so he lives on, pretending that she is still with him. His friends go along with it, knowing that it is hard for him and they try to teach Dongho to move on and begin a new life. He then accepts that she is gone and faces the reality. At the climax of the song, U-KISS is standing on the top of a building in the autumn. A different version of the video was released on April 3,2011 which focuses more on the drama of the story, however, there are no major differences noted between the two videos. The digital version of the album was released on March 30,2011, the song was first performed on Mnets M-Countdown on March 31, and on other shows such as Music Core and Music Bank. On April 15,2011, U-KISS performed 0330 on KBS’s Yoo Hee-yeol’s Sketchbook, Bran New Kiss made it to number 2 on South Koreas Gaon Weekly Albums Chart and 0330 landed at number 27 on Gaons Weekly Digital Songs Chart. A Japanese version of the EP was released on August 24,2011 in 3 versions,2 CD+DVD versions, the CD-only edition comes with a Japanese version of the single 0330. The album debuted on the Japanese Oricon chart at number 5 on the first day of release, on August 3,2011, U-KISS performed the Japanese version of 0330 on a Japanese show, Bomber-E
