Gaspard Ulliel is a French actor and model. He is best known for playing the young Hannibal Lecter in Hannibal Rising, for playing Yves Saint Laurent in the 2014 biopic Saint Laurent and for being the face of Chanels fragrance, Bleu de Chanel. Ulliel was nominated for a César Award for the category of Most Promising Actor in 2002 and 2003, in 2004, he won that award for his role in A Very Long Engagement, which co-starred Audrey Tautou. In 2017, he won the César Award for Best Actor for his role in Its Only the End of the World, Ulliel was born in Boulogne-Billancourt, to Christine, a runway show producer, and Serge Ulliel, a stylist. He has a scar on his cheek as a result of an attack from a doberman when he attempted to ride the dog like a horse at the age of six. He quipped that the scar increases his emotional acting abilities because it looks like a dimple, Ulliel attended the University of Saint-Denis, where he studied cinema. He began acting while he was still at school, appearing in Une Femme En Blanc and he also performed at the Cours Florent, where he was discovered by Les égarés director André Téchiné. In 2004, he starred in Jean-Pierre Jeunets A Very Long Engagement, in 2007, he appeared on the cover of the January issue of French Vogue with supermodel Doutzen Kroes. Ulliel later was chosen as the face of Chanel for its new mens fragrance, the film for the campaign was directed by Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese and debuted in August 2010. He portrayed French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent in the 2014 biopic film Saint Laurent, which earned him a Lumières Award for Best Actor and a César Award for Best Actor nomination. In 2016, he appeared in two films, the role in Xavier Dolans Its Only the End of the World, and in Stephanie Di Giustos The Dancer. He will also star in Guillaume Niclouxs Les Confins du Monde, Ulliel is the current face of Longchamp, a French leather and luxury goods company, along with Kate Moss. Ulliel dated French actress Cécile Cassel from 2005 to 2007, had a brief relationship with Charlotte Casiraghi in 2007 and dated Jordane Crantelle from 2008 to 2013. French is a Romance language of the Indo-European family. It descended from the Vulgar Latin of the Roman Empire, as did all Romance languages, French has evolved from Gallo-Romance, the spoken Latin in Gaul, and more specifically in Northern Gaul. Its closest relatives are the other langues doïl—languages historically spoken in northern France and in southern Belgium, French was also influenced by native Celtic languages of Northern Roman Gaul like Gallia Belgica and by the Frankish language of the post-Roman Frankish invaders. The Organisation internationale de la Francophonie estimates 700 million by 2050, in 2011, Bloomberg Businessweek ranked French the third most useful language for business, after English and Standard Mandarin Chinese. Under the Constitution of France, French has been the language of the Republic since 1992. France mandates the use of French in official government publications, public education except in specific cases, French is one of the four official languages of Switzerland and is spoken in the western part of Switzerland called Romandie, of which Geneva is the largest city. French is the language of about 23% of the Swiss population. French is also a language of Luxembourg, Monaco, and Aosta Valley, while French dialects remain spoken by minorities on the Channel Islands. A plurality of the worlds French-speaking population lives in Africa and this number does not include the people living in non-Francophone African countries who have learned French as a foreign language. Due to the rise of French in Africa, the total French-speaking population worldwide is expected to reach 700 million people in 2050, French is the fastest growing language on the continent. French is mostly a language in Africa, but it has become a first language in some urban areas, such as the region of Abidjan, Ivory Coast and in Libreville. There is not a single African French, but multiple forms that diverged through contact with various indigenous African languages, sub-Saharan Africa is the region where the French language is most likely to expand, because of the expansion of education and rapid population growth

Michel Serrault
–
Michel Serrault was a French stage actor and film star who appeared from 1954 until 2007 in more than 150 films. Although he wanted to be a clown, Serraults parents sent him to a seminary to study for the priesthood. He spent only a few months there before taking-up acting and his first professional job was in a touring production in Germany of Molières Les Fourberies de Scapin. After military service in Dijon, he returned to Paris and joined Robert Dherys burlesque troupe and appeared in their hit show. In 1948, he began his career in the theatre with Robert Dhéry in Les Branquignols, Les belles bacchantes, starring Robert Dhéry, Colette Brosset, and Louis de Funès, directed by Jean Loubignac in 1954. Serrault played in the 1955 suspense thriller Les Diaboliques, starring Simone Signoret and directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot. He met and worked with Jean Poiret in the early 1950s, which led to a song and comedy act and their playing together in 18 films from 1956 to 1984. The films they worked together in included Cette sacrée gamine, with Brigitte Bardot, from February 1973 through 1978, he portrayed the role of Albin/Zaza opposite Jean Poiret in the play La Cage aux Folles, written by Poiret. He recreated the role for the version of the play. Jean-Pierre Marielle is a French actor. He is well known for his outspokenness and especially for his warm, Marielle was born in 1932 in Paris to an industrialist father and a dressmaker mother. His first experiences of acting date back to his years of school during which he staged some Chekhov’s plays with his comrades. But disappointed by his first movie roles, he turned a moment to the cabaret and he obtained a little more consistent roles in the 1960s in movies such as Faites sauter la banque. He plays Jacques Sauniere in The Da Vinci Code and he was awarded the Légion d’Honneur in 1992. Les Visiteurs is a French fantasy comedy film directed by Jean-Marie Poiré and released in 1993. In this comedy, a 12th-century knight and his servant travel in time to the end of the 20th century and find themselves adrift in modern society. Les Visiteurs was the Number 1 box office film in France in 1993, with 13,782,846 ticket sales, the publicity for the film used the tagline Ils ne sont pas nés dhier. Reno and Clavier reprised their roles in a sequel in 1998, the American remake Just Visiting in 2001, the castle of Ermenonville, in Oise département, served as decoration for the castle of Montmirail in the current time and the Cité de Carcassonne for medieval period. In the year 1123, Godefroy Amaury de Malfête, Count of Apremont and Papincourt, saves the life of his beloved sovereign, for this action of bravery, the King makes him Count of Montmirail and promises him the woman he loves, the beautiful Frénégonde de Pouille. On his way to the castle to marry Frénégonde, Godefroys drinking flask is drugged by the witch he had taken prisoner. Hallucinating, he believes the Duke of Pouille, father of his wife, is a ferocious bear. In an attempt to repair his mistake, Godefroy asks the wizard Eusebius to send him back in time to a moment before he shot the Duke, the old wizard muddles his magical spell, accidentally sending Godefroy and Jacquouille to the year 1992. Jacquouille, meanwhile, is befriended by Ginette la Clocharde, a vagrant they meet early in their adventure. Béatrice, thinking Godefroy to be her long-lost stuntman cousin Hubert, gets Godefroy out of the hospital and takes them back to her home. Seeing the family seal on Godefroys hand, Beatrice assumes he stole the jewel from the castle de Montmirail and they go there and meet the owner of the castle, the effete Jacques-Henri Jacquard, the unwitting descendant and close likeness of Jacquouille. The jewel on Godefroys hand starts to burn as they get closer to the castle, the two seals explode and destroy Jacquards brand new Range Rover. Godefroy books a room for the night and finds a passage known only to him. There he finds a letter telling him to go to an address, where an aged Monsieur Ferdinand. Jacquouille, however, wants to stay, enjoying Ginettes company and having proved more adaptable than Godefroy in discovering toothpaste, modern clothing, furious at his behavior, Godefroy finally brings him to the hotel room by force. While Godefroy is talking with Béatrice, Jacquouille swaps jackets with his descendant, closes the curtains, dims the lights, in the dark, Godefroy gives Jacquard the potion which then sends him back to the year 1123. The bewildered Jacquard finds himself stranded in the past in the role of Godefroys servant as Godefroy leaves on horseback with Frénégonde, another sequel, The Visitors, Bastille Day, was released in 2016. The Intouchables

The Intouchables is a 2011 French buddy comedy-drama film directed by Olivier Nakache & Éric Toledano. It stars François Cluzet and Omar Sy, nine weeks after its release in France on 2 November 2011, it became the second biggest box office hit in France, just behind the 2008 film Welcome to the Sticks. The film was voted the event of 2011 in France with 52% of votes in a poll by Fnac. The film has received award nominations. At night in Paris, Driss is driving Philippes Maserati at high speed and they are chased through the streets by the police, and eventually cornered. Driss claims the quadriplegic Philippe must be driven to the emergency room, Philippe pretends to have a seizure. Driss, a candidate, has no ambitions to get hired and he is just there to get a signature showing he was interviewed and rejected in order to continue receiving his welfare benefits. He is told to back the next morning to get his signed letter. The next day, Driss returns and learns that he is on a period for the live-in caregiver job. Despite being uninterested in the job and his lack of experience, Driss does well caring for Philippe. Driss learns the extent of Philippes disability and accompanies Philippe in every moment of his life, a friend of Philippes reveals Drisss criminal record which includes six months in jail for robbery. Philippe states he does not care about Drisss past because he is the one that does not treat him with pity. He says he will not fire him as long as he does his job properly, Philippe discloses to Driss that he became disabled following a paragliding accident and that his wife died without bearing children. Gradually, Philippe is led by Driss to put order in his private life. Driss discovers modern art, opera, and even takes up painting, for Philippes birthday, a private concert of classical music is performed in his living room. Feeling that the concert is too boring, Driss plays Earth, Wind & Fires Boogie Wonderland, Driss discovers that Philippe has a purely epistolary relationship with a woman called Eléonore, who lives in Dunkirk. Driss encourages him to meet her, but Philippe fears her reaction when she discovers his disability, Driss eventually convinces Philippe to talk to Eléonore on the phone. Subway (film)

Subway is a 1985 French comedy drama film directed by Luc Besson and starring Isabelle Adjani and Christopher Lambert. The film is classified as part of the cinema du look movement, there he joins the dwellers and befriends several colourful characters, including others who are living under the subway to avoid police arrest. While the gangsters try to find Fred, he develops a romance with the gangsters young trophy wife Héléna. She had originally invited Fred to the party featured at the opening of the film, Fred forms a pop band with some of his friends, such as The Drummer and Enrico, who compose the songs. While Fred is working on project, Hélénas powerful husband pressures the police to find the fugitive. One of Freds sidekicks, The Rollerskater, who has been wanted by the police for a time, is captured by Commissioner Gesberg. Fred and his friend The Florist rob a train carrying money, The Florist escapes, Fred uses money from the robbery to pay off a band scheduled to perform in the subway station. His new band replaces them but, at their performance, Fred is searched for by both the police and a henchman of Hélénas husband, the henchman shoots Fred just as Héléna was about to reach and warn him of danger. The film ends with Héléna kneeling beside Fred, who is lying on his back, looking content and they are playing and being applauded by the audience in the background. The opening car chase scene is said to pay homage to the 1971 film The French Connection, Éric Serras score and other musical pieces from the soundtrack, such as Freds bands song, Its Only Mystery, were released on vinyl and cassette in 1985. The soundtrack sold over 100,000 copies in France, the soundtrack was released on CD in 1996. Subway was the third-most popular French film in France in 1986, after Trois Hommes et un Couffin, the film grossed $390,659 at the box office in the United States. The film holds an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on seven reviews, Subway was nominated for the Foreign Language Film award at the 40th British Academy Film Awards. The film was nominated for 13 César Awards in 1986, winning 3, Best Actor, Best Production Design, the film was released on DVD in the USA in November 2001. The DVD presents the film in 2.35,1 anamorphic widescreen, aaron Beierle of DVD Talk gave the DVD3 out of 5 stars for video quality, and 2½ stars for audio quality. Jason Bovberg of DVD Talk gave the film 3 stars for video and audio quality. Both reviewers gave the only a ½ star for its extra features, noting only cast. Both the UK and French versions of the Blu-ray were released in September 2009, both only contained the film in its original French audio, though with optional English subtitles

Polisse

Polisse is a 2011 French drama film written, directed by and starring Maïwenn. It also stars Joeystarr, Karin Viard, Marina Foïs, Nicolas Duvauchelle, Emmanuelle Bercot, the film centres on the Child Protection Unit of the Paris Police, and a photographer who is assigned to cover the unit. The title is derived from Maïwenns sons misspelling of the word police, the film won the Jury Prize at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and in 2012, was nominated for thirteen César Awards. In moments of relaxation the squad gossip, quarrel, drink, dance, relationships tremble and their boss is a political policeman, not wholly sympathetic to the demands of their consciences, and ready to tighten the leash if the man they are questioning has powerful friends. At the centre of the story is a hard-edged, bitter yet tender policeman, Maïwenn got the idea for the film when she saw a documentary about the Child Protection Unit on television. She was allowed to stay with the officers of the unit to research the subject, all the cases in the screenplay were based either on things the director had witnessed during her time with the unit or older cases they told her about. Not letting the viewers know the verdicts of the defendants was a conscious choice, Maïwenn wrote a first draft for the screenplay on her own, and was then joined by Emmanuelle Bercot. The film was produced for €6.14 million through Les Films du Trésor in co-production with Arte France Cinéma, the production received pre-sales investment from Canal+ and CinéCinéma. Two former members of the CPU were hired to train the actors, filming took place in Paris between 30 August and 29 October 2010. The film was recorded with two or three cameras in each scene. The world premiere took place at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, the regular French release was on 19 October through Mars Distribution. At the Cannes Film Festival, Jordan Mintzer of The Hollywood Reporter compared the film to a season of The Wire packed into a single two-hour-plus film. And even with its loose threads and frenzied structure, it jumps from laughter to tears and back again. In Screen Dailys review from the festival, Jonathan Romney called Maïwenn undeniably a very strong director of actors, shes less adept, though, at judging what is dramatically essential and what is surplus to requirements. The film won the Cannes Film Festivals Jury Prize, peter Bradshaw from the Guardian newspaper was much less positive. He described the film as a contender for the most awful film of the competition and much of it feels like a pretty dodgy evening in front of the television. But I dont think any director of The Bill would have permitted the toe-curlingly embarrassing overacting we get in this movie, peter Schöning, defined in his review for German Der Spiegel Poliss as a cry for help which became a film. He added this was not merely because of the abused children, but. as well because of those policemen who have to enforce the law but moreover have to perform a great deal of social work - hereby permanently being overstrained

La Haine
–
La Haine is a 1995 French black-and-white drama/suspense film written, co-edited, and directed by Mathieu Kassovitz. It is commonly released under its French title in the English-speaking world and it is about three young friends and their struggle to live in the banlieues of Paris. The title derives from a spoken by one of them, Hubert. Vinz, who is Jewish, is filled with rage and he sees himself as a gangster ready to win respect by killing a cop, manically practising the role of Travis Bickle from the film Taxi Driver in the mirror secretly. His attitude towards police, for instance, is a simplified, stylized blanket condemnation, Hubert is an Afro-French boxer and small-time drug dealer, the most mature of the three, whose gymnasium was burned in the riots. The quietest, most thoughtful and wisest of the three, he contemplates the ghetto and the hate around him. He expresses the wish to leave this world of violence and hate behind him. Saïd – Sayid in some English subtitles – is an Arab Maghrebi who inhabits the ground between his two friends responses to their place in life. A friend of theirs, Abdel Ichaha, has been brutalized by the police shortly before the riot, Vinz finds a policemans.44 Magnum revolver, lost in the riot. He vows that if their friend dies from his injuries, he use it to kill a cop. The three go through a daily routine and struggle to entertain themselves, frequently finding themselves under police scrutiny. They sleep in a mall and wake to a news broadcast informing them that Abdel is dead. Vinz suddenly arrives, and his gun allows him to break up the fight, early in the morning, the trio returns to the banlieue and split up to their separate homes, and Vinz turns the gun over to Hubert. However, Vinz and Saïd encounter a policeman, whom Vinz had insulted earlier in the day whilst with his friends on a local rooftop. The policeman grabs and threatens Vinz, making reference to the incident on the roof. Hubert rushes to their aid, but as the policeman holding Vinz taunts him with a gun held to Vinzs head. Kassovitz has said that the idea came to him when a young Zairian and he was killed at point blank range while in police custody and handcuffed to a radiator. A Prophet

A Prophet is a 2009 French prison drama-crime film directed by Jacques Audiard from a screenplay he co-wrote with Thomas Bidegain, Abdel Raouf Dafri and Nicolas Peufaillit. The film won the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language and nine Césars and it was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Academy Awards. Malik El Djebena, a 19-year-old French youth of Algerian descent, is sentenced to six years in prison for attacking police officers, alone and illiterate upon his arrival, he falls under the sway of Corsican mobsters, led by César Luciani, who enforces a brutal rule. The prison is divided between two factions, the Corsicans and the Muslims. When Luciani forces him to be the assassin of Reyeb. Malik serves as a servant to the Corsicans, who treat him with disdain. All the while, he is haunted by visions of the murdered Reyeb, when the bulk of the Corsicans are transferred or released, Luciani is forced to give Malik more responsibility. Having secretly learned Corsican, Malik acts as Lucianis eyes and ears in the prison, when Malik earns the privilege of day-long furloughs outside the prison, Luciani relies on him to conduct his criminal business outside. Ryad, a Muslim friend, teaches Malik to read and write, Ryad teaches Malik about his own heritage, introducing him to two other Muslims, Tarik and Hassan, and increasing his power within the prison. Malik also becomes involved with a drug dealer, Jordi. When Ryad gains an early release due to cancer, the three partners organize a drug-running enterprise to sell hashish. But when Ryad is kidnapped by the drug dealer Latif, Malik tracks down Latifs relative inside the prison and he kidnaps the relatives family and forces Latifs gang to release Ryad. When Luciani discovers that Malik is using his day-releases for his own personal enterprise, Malik is sent to meet Brahim Lattrache in Marseille, another Muslim, who is involved in a deal between Luciani and the Lingherris, an Italian mafia group. Lattrache is bitter toward the Corsicans for the murder of Reyeb, when Malik spots a deer warning sign, he remembers a recent dream of deer running in the road. He tells his kidnappers that they are in danger of hitting wild animals, Lattrache is impressed by Malik, calling him a prophet and agreeing to do criminal business with him instead of Luciani, even though Malik admitted that he killed Reyeb. Luciani believes there is a mole in his organization and decides to use Malik to assassinate Jacky Marcaggi, but Malik and Ryad have their own plan for Marcaggi, they kill his bodyguards and dump him in a van with his Corsican enemy Vettori, Lucianis henchman. Jean-Louis Xavier Trintignant is a French actor, screenwriter and director who has enjoyed international acclaim. He won the Best Actor Award at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival as well as the Best Actor Award at the César Awards 2013, Trintignant was born in Piolenc, Vaucluse, France, the son of Claire and Raoul Trintignant, an industrialist. At the age of twenty, Trintignant moved to Paris to study drama, trintignant’s acting was interrupted for several years by mandatory military service. After serving in Algiers, he returned to Paris and resumed his work in film and he had the leading male role in the classic A Man and a Woman, which at the time was the most successful French film ever screened in the foreign market. Throughout the 1970s, Trintignant starred in films and in 1983 he made his first English language feature film. Following this, he starred in François Truffauts final film, Confidentially Yours, and reprised his role in the sequel A Man. In 1994, he starred in Krzysztof Kieślowskis last film, Three Colors, though he takes an occasional film role, he has, as of late, been focusing essentially on his stage work. After a 14-year gap, Trintignant came back on screen for Michael Hanekes film Amour, haneke had sent Trintignant the script, which had been written specifically for him. Trintignant comes from a wealthy family and he is the nephew of race car driver, Louis Trintignant, who was killed in 1933 while practising on the Péronne racetrack in Picardy. Another uncle, Maurice Trintignant, was a Formula One driver who won the Monaco Grand Prix as well as the 24 hours of Le Mans. Raised in and around automobile racing, Jean-Louis Trintignant was the choice of film director Claude Lelouch for the starring role of race car driver in the 1966 film, A Man. He suffered a leg injury from an accident in June 2007. His first wife was actress Stéphane Audran and his second wife, Nadine Marquand, was also an actress as well as a screenwriter and director. They had three children, Vincent Trintignant, Pauline and Marie Trintignant, at the age of 17, Marie performed in La terrazza alongside her father and later became a successful actress in her own right. She was killed at the age of 41 by her boyfriend, singer Bertrand Cantat, in a room in Vilnius. Jacques Villeret was a French actor, best known internationally for his role as François Pignon in the comedy Le Dîner de Cons. During his career, he earned many awards including the prestigious medal, Villeret was born Mohamed Boufroura in Loches, Indre-et-Loire, France, to an Algerian father and a French mother. He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris in the class of Louis Seigner, when his career was at its height, with the success of Le Dîner de Cons, a separation with his wife and an enormous financial turnaround to do with tax, plunged him into depression. Villeret turned to alcohol as a source of comfort, and it became a problem, one which he sought to resolve by isolating himself. Thomas Langmann is a French film producer and actor, known for producing The Artist, for which he received an Academy Award for Best Picture as producer in 2012. He became a producer in the early 2000s. Philippe Noiret was a French film actor. Noiret was born in Lille, France, the son of Lucy and Pierre Noiret and he was an indifferent scholar and attended several prestigious Paris schools, including the Lycée Janson de Sailly. He failed several times to pass his exams, so he decided to study theater. He trained at the Centre Dramatique de lOuest and toured with the Théâtre National Populaire for seven years, where he met Monique Chaumette, whom he married in 1962. During that time he developed a career as a comedian in a duo act with Jean-Pierre Darras. In these roles they satirized the politics of Charles de Gaulle, noirets screen debut was an uncredited role in Gigi. In 1955 he appeared in La Pointe Courte directed by Agnès Varda and she said later - I discovered in him a breadth of talent rare in a young actor. For actors of my generation—all the men of 50 or 60 now in French movies—all of us were thinking of being stage actors, even people like Jean-Paul Belmondo, all of us, we never thought wed become movie stars. So, at the beginning, I was just doing it for the money, but after two or three years of working on movies, I started to enjoy it, and to be very interested in it. And Im still very interested in it, because Ive never really understood how it works, I mean, what is acting for the movies. Noiret won his first César Award for his role in Vieux Fusil in 1976 and his second César came in 1990 for his role in Life and Nothing But. Le vieux fusil is a 1975 French film directed by Robert Enrico, and starring Philippe Noiret, Romy Schneider and Jean Bouise. It won the 1976 César Award for Best Film, Best Actor and Best Music, the film is based on the Massacre of Oradour-sur-Glane in 1944. In Montauban in 1944, during the German retreat from France, Julien Dandieu is an ageing, frightened by the German army entering Montauban, Dandieu asks his friend Francois to drive his wife and his daughter to the remote village where he owns a chateau. One week later, Dandieu sets off to them for the weekend. He finds that all the villagers have been herded into the church, in the château, now occupied by the Germans, he finds his daughter shot and his wife immolated by a flame-thrower. Dandieu decides to kill as many Germans as possible to avenge his family, trapped inside the castle, the Germans begin to think they are surrounded by many partisans and do not realise that he is, in fact, the only one. When a Resistance detachment drops by, Dandieu refuses their offer to help him, eventually, with no more cartridges for the shotgun, he collects the flame-thrower which killed his beloved wife and uses it to kill the leading SS officer as he is about to commit suicide. Alerted by the partisans, the inhabitants of a nearby village, Dandieu is picked up by Francois, but has suffered a nervous breakdown following the aftermath of the slaughter, behaving as if his family was still alive. The film ends with a flashback to one of his happier days now gone, château de Bruniquel, the landmark of the village, where most of the film was shot. They enjoy each others company so much that they decide to take the rest of the day off together to go shopping, although their relationship is platonic, Pascal and Karine begin to grow jealous. Alain Fabien Maurice Marcel Delon is a French actor and businessman. Delon became one of Europes most prominent actors and screen sex symbols in the 1960s and he achieved critical acclaim for roles in films such as Rocco and His Brothers, Purple Noon, LEclisse, The Leopard, Lost Command and Le Samouraï. Over the course of his career Delon worked with well known directors, including Luchino Visconti, Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Pierre Melville, Michelangelo Antonioni. Delon was born in Sceaux, Seine, Île-de-France, a suburb of Paris and his parents, Édith and Fabien Delon, divorced when Delon was four. Both remarried, and Delon has a half-sister and two half-brothers and his paternal grandmother was Corsican, from Prunelli-di-Fiumorbo. When his parents divorced, Delon was sent to live with foster parents, when they died, his parents shared him but the arrangement proved unsatisfactory. He attended a Roman Catholic boarding school, the first of several schools from which he was expelled because of unruly behavior, teachers once tried to persuade him to enter the priesthood because of his aptitude in religious studies. At 14, Delon left school, and worked for a time at his stepfathers butcher shop. He enlisted in the French Navy three years later, and in 1953-54 he served as a fusilier marin in the First Indochina War, Delon has said that out of his four years of military service he spent 11 months in prison for being undisciplined. In 1956, after being discharged from the military, he returned to France. He had little money, and got by on whatever employment he could find and he spent time working as a waiter, a porter, a secretary and a sales assistant. During this time he became friends with the actress Brigitte Auber, and joined her on a trip to the Cannes Film Festival, at Cannes, Delon was seen by a talent scout for David O. Selznick. After a screen test Selznick offered him a contract, provided he learn English, Delon returned to Paris to study the language, but when he met French director Yves Allégret, he was convinced that he should stay in France to begin his career. Selznick allowed Delon to cancel his contract, and Allégret gave him his debut in the film with Edwige Feuillère, marc Allegret cast him in Be Beautiful But Shut Up, which also featured a young Jean Paul Belmondo. He was then given his first lead, supporting Romy Schneider in a romance, Christine. He and Schneider began a highly publicised romance in real life, the film was the seventeenth most popular movie at the French box office that year. Monsieur Klein is a 1976 French film directed by Joseph Losey, with Alain Delon starring in the title role. France is occupied by the Nazis, Robert Klein, apparently apolitical, is a well-to-do art dealer, Roman Catholic and Alsatian by birth, who takes advantage of French Jews who need to sell artworks to raise cash to leave the country. One day, the local Jewish newspaper, addressed to him, is delivered to his home and he reports this to the police who remain suspicious that he may be reporting this scheme to disguise his own true identity. When the art dealer cannot locate the other Klein, authorities require him to offer proof of his French heritage, while waiting for the documentation to arrive, he struggles to track down his namesake and learn his motivation. Before he can resolve the situation by means, he is caught up in the July 1942 roundup of Parisian Jews. He is reunited with Jews who once were his clients as they board boxcars for Auschwitz, the film offers no clear resolution of its contradictory evidence and blind alleys. According to Vincent Canby, the filmmakers are not as interested in the workings of the plot as in matters of identity, the film was nominated for the Palme dOr at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival but lost to Taxi Driver. However, Monsieur Klein did win the César Award for Best Film while Losey won the César Award for Best Director, alexandre Trauner won the César Award for Best Production Design, and in addition the film was nominated for Césars in four other categories. Jean Rochefort is a French actor, with a career that has spanned over five decades. Rochefort was born in Paris, France and he was educated at the Lycée Pierre Corneille in Rouen He was 19 years old when he entered the Centre dArt Dramatique de la rue Blanche. Later he joined the Conservatoire National, after his national service, in 1953, he worked with the Compagnie Grenier Hussenot as a theatre actor for seven years. There he was noticed for his ability to play both drama and comedy and he then became a television and cinema actor. He has also worked as director, in this drama he starred as a man who leaves his family for ten years before returning. Thanks to this comedy, Rochefort get a big popularity, in 1998, he starred as Fernand de Morcerf opposite Gerard Depardieu in the mini-series Le Comte de Monte Cristo. In his 30s during the shooting of Cartouche, he discovered his passion for horses and he has been a horse breeder since then and now owns Le Haras de Villequoy. His passion led him to become a consultant for French television in 2004. He has won two César Awards, in 1976, Best Supporting Actor for Que la fête commence, and in 1978, in the eighties, he became the narrator of the French version of Welcome to Pooh Corner, replacing Laurie Main. This made him popular with children at the time and Disney hired him to several audio versions of their classic movies. In the nineties, he back to comedy with Les Grands Ducs where he played alongside two other actors of his generation with a similar career, Philippe Noiret and Jean-Pierre Marielle. He was to play the character in The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. Rochefort learned English just for the part, unfortunately, amongst other production problems, he began suffering from a herniated disc. Unable to film for months, production was cancelled, a documentary, Lost in La Mancha, was made about the failed production. The Man Who Loved Women is a 1977 French comedy/drama film directed by François Truffaut and starring Charles Denner, Brigitte Fossey and Nelly Borgeaud. In 1983, it was remade in Hollywood under the same title, the film had a total of 955,262 admissions in France. At the funeral of Bertrand Morane, Genevieve observes the other mourners, the following is told in flashback. He goes to lengths to locate a woman he had seen, only to discover she was briefly visiting France. Bertrand becomes friendly with Hélène, who runs a shop, but she confesses to being attracted to younger men, she is forty-one. He has an affair with Delphine, the wife of a doctor, who gains arousal from the threat of discovery and he recollects his childhood and his relationship with his distant mother, remembering her legs in shots reminiscent of the frequent leg shots of women in the film. He pretends to have a child in need of baby sitting in order to lure a woman to his apartment. When she discovers the doll he has put in his bed in place of a baby and asks him what this is, he replies, eventually, he begins his autobiography only for his typist to find the content too much to continue. Completed, it is submitted to the four leading publishers in Paris, a member of the editorial staff at one of them, Genevieve, stands up for the work against the objections of her colleagues. Rejecting his title for the book, she suggests The Man Who Loved Women, Bertrand meets Véra, a significant old flame, while the book is at the proof stage, and insists on withdrawing the book from publication because he had neglected to mention her. Genevieve though persuades him to make Véra the subject of his second book, by now, Genevieve has fallen in love with him, in spite of recognizing his personality flaws, but he is hit by a car while rushing to follow two women with attractive legs. Admitted to the hospital and forbidden to move, he sees nurses in his doorway and, attracted by their legs, accidentally severs his drip, falls out of his bed, and dies. At the funeral, Genevieve speculates on the womens relationship with Bertrand, she does not speak to them. Geoff Andrew in the Time Out Film Guide describes the film as harmless, irritates by its over-wrought sense of literary-style paradox, by its insistence on eccentricity as its source of humour. Melissa E. Biggs though, in French Films 1945-1993, describes it as an extraordinary film, made at just the right moment in time, when sexual obsession could still be ironic and celebrated and not held up to scorn by political correctness and feminist righteousness. It is co-written and directed by Édouard Molinaro and stars Ugo Tognazzi, foreign film released in the United States of America. On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 100% rating based on 18 reviews, with an average rating of 7. 8/10. The film was followed by two sequels, La Cage aux Folles II, also directed by Molinaro, and La Cage aux folles 3 - Elles se marient, a 1983 Broadway musical of the same name based on the play and the film was also successful. In 1996, an American remake titled The Birdcage, directed by Mike Nichols and written by Elaine May, was released, relocated to South Beach, Miami, and stars Robin Williams and Nathan Lane. Jean Carmet was a French actor. Jean Carmet began working on stage and then in film in the early 1940s becoming a popular comedic actor in his native country. He is best known internationally for his role as a French colonist in the 1976 film, because of his good-natured manner, he was as popular with members of the film crew as he was with the audiences. During his long career, he appeared in more than 200 films and he was nominated for the César Award for Best Actor for his leading role in the 1986 film, Miss Mona. Twice he won the César Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and was nominated on two other occasions, in February 1994, to celebrate his 50th year in film, he was honored by the French motion picture industry with a special César Award. Just a few later, Jean Carmet died of a heart attack. Yves Montand

Ivo Livi, better known as Yves Montand, was an Italian-French actor and singer. Montand was born Ivo Livi in Monsummano Terme, Italy, to Giuseppina and Giovanni Livi, Giuseppina was a devout Catholic, while Giovanni held strong Communist beliefs. Montands family left for France in 1923 because of Italys Fascist regime and he grew up in Marseille, where, as a young man, he worked in his sisters beauty salon, and later on the docks. He began a career in business as a music-hall singer. In 1944, he was discovered by Édith Piaf in Paris, Montand went on to international recognition as a singer and actor, starring in numerous films. His recognizably crooner songs, especially those about Paris, became instant classics and he was one of the most famous performers at Bruno Coquatrixs famous Paris Olympia music hall, and toured with musicians including Didi Duprat. In October 1947, he sang Mais quest-ce que jai. at the Théâtre de lÉtoile, the composer of this song had him offer also sing Cest si bon he had written but Yves Montand refused. Following the success of the recording of song by the Sœurs Étienne in 1948. During his career, Montand acted in a number of American motion pictures as well as on Broadway and he was nominated for a César Award for Best Actor in 1980 for I comme Icare and again in 1984 for Garçon. The film was a critical hit and raised Montands profile in the US. In 1951, he married Simone Signoret, and they co-starred in several films throughout their careers, Montands only child, Valentin, his son by his second wife, Carole Amiel, was born in 1988. In a paternity suit that rocked France, another woman accused Montand of being the father of her daughter, Montand refused, but the woman persisted after his death. In a court ruling that made headlines, the woman won the right to have Montand exhumed. The results indicated that he was not the girls biological father. In an interview, Jean-Jacques Beineix said, e died on the set, on the very last day, after his very last shot. It was the very last night and we were doing retakes and he finished what he was doing and then he just died. And the film tells the story of an old man who dies from a heart attack, Montand is interred next to his first wife, Simone Signoret, in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. I as in Icarus is a 1979 French thriller film directed by Henri Verneuil. Yves Montand as Henri Volney Michel Etcheverry as Frédéric Heiniger Roger Planchon as Prof, the film begins with the assassination of President Marc Jarry, who is about to be inaugurated for a second six-year term of office. Henri Volney, state attorney and member of the charged with investigating the assassination refuses to agree to the commissions final findings. The film portrays the initial controversy about this, as well as Volney, the action takes place in a fictional Western state where the spoken language is mainly French, but German, English and Spanish also are spoken. Its location, or even continent, is unknown, the capital city is made only of modern buildings, like Brasília. The political regime is presidential, the President being Marc Jarry at the beginning of the film, the new town of Cergy in the northwestern suburbs of Paris was used as a filming location for the movie. The EDF-GDF tower designed by architect Renzo Moro is the building from which the shots were fired to assassinate president Marc Jarry, the governors palace was the prefecture of the Val dOise. The huge room used for meetings is the High Court of Justice. The long scene of the psychological experiment towards the end of the film, supposed to place at the University of Laye. This fictional Laye University is Yale University and the experiment shown in the film is the famous Milgram experiment, the filmmakers chose the modern and innovative architecture of the new town to avoid depicting any particular country. The Last Metro is a 1980 drama film made by Les Films du Carrosse, written and directed by the French filmmaker François Truffaut, and starring Catherine Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu. In 1981, the film won ten Césars for, best film, best actor, best actress, best cinematography, best director, best editing, best music, best production design, best sound and it received Best Foreign Film nominations in the Academy Awards and Golden Globes. The title The Last Metro refers to the fact that during the occupation it was imperative that Parisians catch the last train home and this was to avoid breaking the strict curfew imposed by the Nazis. This event was recreated in The Last Metro. Truffaut was stimulated by the actor Jean Marais’ autobiography and by documents of theatre people from during the occupation of which he based the film upon. This film was one instalment—dealing with theatre—of a trilogy on the entertainment world that Truffaut had planned, the instalment that dealt with the film world was 1973s La Nuit Américaine, which had won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Truffaut completed the screenplay for the third instalment, LAgence Magique, in the late 1970s he was close to beginning filming, but the failure of his film The Green Room forced him to look to a more commercial project, and he filmed Love on the Run instead. Truffaut began casting in September 1979, and he wrote the role of Marion especially with Catherine Deneuve in mind for her energy, Gérard Depardieu initially did not want to be involved in the film, as he did not like Truffaut’s directing style, but he was later convinced. Most of the filming took place in a chocolate factory on Rue du Landy in Clichy. During shooting Deneuve suffered an ankle sprain from a fall, resulting in having to shoot scenes at short notice. Scriptwriter Suzanne Schiffman was also hospitalised with an intestinal obstruction. The film shoot lasted fifty-nine days and ended on April 21,1980, a recurring theme in Truffaut’s films has been linking film making and film watching. The Last Metro is self-conscious in this respect, in the opening the film mixes documentary footage with period re-creations alongside shots of contemporary film posters. La Cage aux Folles II is a 1980 French comedy film and the sequel to 1979s La Cage aux Folles. It is directed by Édouard Molinaro and stars Michel Serrault as Albin, the female star of a gay night-club revue. A spy plants a capsule of microfilm on Albin and from then on spies, Albin and Renato travel to Italy to hide at Renatos mothers farm. At each point along the way we see the worlds reaction to Albin. Serrault gives a comic performance - his Albin is a wildly fanciful creation. Theres a grandeur about Albins inability to see himself as he is, and maybe its only in this exaggerated form that a movie about the ridiculousness and the tenderness of married love can be widely accepted now. At the end, after Albin has been kidnapped by the spies, Renato, and, suddenly, forgetting the danger, each starts running toward the other, and they meet between the two armed groups like lovers in an opera. Coin flipping, coin tossing, or heads or tails is the practice of throwing a coin in the air to choose between two alternatives, sometimes to resolve a dispute between two parties. It is a form of sortition which inherently has only two possible and equally likely outcomes, the historical origin of coin flipping is the interpretation of a chance outcome as the expression of divine will. Coin flipping as a game was known to the Romans as navia aut caput, as some coins had a ship on one side, in England, this game was referred to as cross and pile. The expression Heads or Tails results from heads and tails being considered opposite body parts, during a coin toss, the coin is thrown into the air such that it rotates edge-over-edge several times. Either beforehand or when the coin is in the air, an interested party calls heads or tails, the other party is assigned the opposite side. Depending on custom, the coin may be caught, caught and inverted, when the coin comes to rest, the toss is complete and the party who called correctly or was assigned the upper side is declared the winner. It is possible for a coin to land on its edge, however, even on a flat surface it is possible for a coin to land on its edge, with a chance of about 1 in 6000. Coup de Torchon is a 1981 French film adaptation of Jim Thompsons 1964 novel Pop. The film changes the setting from a West Texas oil boom town to a small town in French West Africa. The film had 2,199,309 Admissions in France and was the 16th most attended film of the year, in a little town in French West Africa in 1938, Lucien Cordier is the only policeman. Unable or unwilling to impose his authority, he is treated with scorn by everybody and his sexy wife Huguette has brought a lover, Nono, to live openly with them, claiming he is her brother. Lucien fancies the mischievous young bride Rose, but lets her husband beat her in the street unchallenged. The head of the company, Vanderbrouck, daily insults him for all to see. And the bane of his life is a pair of slimy pimps and it is the pimps that take him to the brink, so he gets on a train to consult his superior Chavasson, who tells him to act forcefully. On the train home is the new teacher for his town, Anne. Once back, he catches the two alone and, after shooting both dead, throws the corpses in the river. When Chavasson learns of this, he rushes down to question Lucien, having outwitted his boss and removed his prime tormentors, he starts on the others who have made his life a misery. Vanderbrouck is dropped in a privy and Roses husband, like the pimps, is shot dead, when his servant retrieves his masters body and brings it back to the house, Lucien has to kill the man too. Catching Nono peeping at Anne in her shower, he beats him up in the street, then he steals the money which his wife had been saving up in order to leave him and goes off to see the newly widowed Rose. His wife and Nono, reckoning that he is going to abscond with Rose, Lucien gives her the money and tells her to get away fast. All he has left in life is Anne, to whom he confesses his general malaise and she is ready to accept him but he says he is now incapable of love. Her former racketeer boyfriend and pimp, Dédé, has excluded from the business of a local mob boss, Roger Massina. When a police informant is killed, the police decide to recruit Dédé as a replacement, the police raid Dédés apartment, find a gun, and blackmail him into becoming an informant using this and other threats. The police want to get to Massina, and they try to use Dédé to do it. Dédé agrees to participate in a set-up, and tries to return to the side of Massina by telling him about a rich antique dealer he has found to rob. Massina yields to greed and agrees to set something up, letting Dédé partially back into his organization, on the day of the heist, Dédé is part of the team. But Massina doesnt trust Dédé entirely, so he replaces him at the last minute with his semi-psychotic, gun-happy henchman, Petrovic. Dédé calls the police and tries to call off the set-up, Le Belge stages a traffic accident that blocks Massinas van, as planned. As Le Belge stalls Massinas van, Petrovic becomes suspicious, and suddenly begins shooting everyone in sight, killing several civilians, Massina slips away into the Métro, but Petrovic is chased and trapped by the police after he ruthlessly kills an officer. Dédé tries to escape but is found by Massina, who prepares to him in an alley. Dédé overpowers Massina, however, and turns the gun on him, shooting him in the mouth, Dédé then goes into hiding, knowing that Massinas crew will come looking for him. But Nicole, his girlfriend, fearing for Dédés life, deliberately turns him in to the police, the movie ends with Nicole watching from a car and crying as Dédé is taken away by the police

Danton is a 1983 French language film depicting the last months of Georges Danton, one of the leaders of the French Revolution. It is an adaptation of the Polish play The Danton Case by Stanisława Przybyszewska, the film stars Gérard Depardieu in the title role with Anne Alvaro as Éléonore Duplay. It was directed by the Polish director Andrzej Wajda and was an international co-production between companies in France, Poland and West Germany, all supporters of Danton are played by French actors, while Robespierres allies are played by Poles. The film had 1,392,779 admissions in France, the film begins in the spring of 1794, when the Reign of Terror was in full swing. On the borders of Paris, any vehicles entering Paris, including the carriage of Danton, Robespierre, meanwhile, is sick in his bed. His landladys daughter, Éléonore Duplay, attempts to comfort him and her nephew, whom she is taking care of, is meanwhile being made to memorize lines from the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen. Back in the streets of Paris, starving lines of people, waiting for bread, whether or not it is an enemy plot, the people do know that they are hungry, and that hunger leads to revolt. Once the bread store actually opens, and they begin to receive their bread, they are distracted by their other source of faith and hope in life. As Robespierre is watching, Danton is swarmed by a mob of supporters and fans, Robespierre, in his flat, is visited by Heron, the chief of the secret police, and instructs him to destroy the print shop of Camille Desmoulins, who is publishing pro-Dantonist circulars. As the shop is being attacked, Robespierre is having his wig powdered and his friend Saint-Just comes in, and urges him to have Danton guillotined, but Robespierre ignores him. Later, when Robespierre meets with the members of the Committee of Public Safety. Robespierre resists for various reasons, mainly because Danton is a brilliant and highly popular statesman and orator, before the National Convention commences for the day, Danton discusses with general Westermann about a coup to overthrow Robespierre and the committee, of which Danton disapproves. Danton’s closest supporters warn him that Robespierre is planning on having him jailed, Danton, however, is positive that his newspaper and the support of the people will prevent anything like that from ever happening. All of his supporters urge him to now and take power. That day, at the convention, one of Danton’s supporters, Bourdon, makes a speech against Heron and his secret police and that night, Danton and Robespierre have dinner together. Danton puts much work into setting the meal, but Robespierre refuses to drink or eat, Robespierre wants Danton to join his cause and stop fighting because he does not want to be forced to have Danton executed. Danton simply drinks until he passes out, and refuses Robespierre’s advances, as Danton leaves the hotel, he is met by a group of armed men who turn out to be Westermanns assistants, preparing to stage a coup. Lino Ventura

Lino Ventura was an Italian-born actor who starred in French movies. At one point Ventura was pursuing a prizefighting and professional wrestling career but had to end it because of an injury. In 1953, by chance, one of his friends mentioned him to Jacques Becker who was looking for an Italian actor to play opposite Jean Gabin in a movie called Touchez pas au grisbi. Becker offered him on the spot the role of Angelo, which Ventura refused at first and he had such a presence in the movie that the whole profession took notice. Ventura started to build up a career in similar hard-boiled gangster movies. Some of his most famous include the portrait of corrupt police chief Tiger Brown in 1963s The Threepenny Opera. Ventura remained active until the year before his death from an attack in 1987 at the age of 68. Having a handicapped daughter himself, he created a foundation, Perce-Neige, in 1966. Throughout his career, he was one of the most popular actors of French cinema and he spoke French without any accent and spoke Italian with a slight French accent, having arrived in France at the age of seven. Forcibly incorporated into the Italian army during World War II, he deserted to remain faithful to the principles of France, but, although his wife and four children were French, he never wanted to give up Italian citizenship, out of respect for his parents. Michel Gérard Joseph Colucci, better known as Coluche, was a French comedian and actor who was famous for his irreverent sense of humour. Colucci adopted Coluche as a name at age 26, when he began his entertainment career. He became known for his irreverent attitude towards politics and the establishment and he was one of the first major comedians to regularly use profanities as a source of humor on French television. Michel Gérard Joseph Colucci was born on 28 October 1944, weeks after the liberation of Paris and his mother, Simone Bouyer, worked as a florist in the Boulevard Montparnasse. His father, Honorio Colucci, from Casalvieri in Lazio, Italy, was a painter and his father died in 1947 at age 31 from poliomyelitis, his wife struggled thereafter to raise the young Michel and his sister on a meager salary. Coluche showed little promise at school, and left after completing his primary studies and he tried various temporary jobs, and had several run-ins with authorities. During this time his mother bought him a guitar, which he himself to play. In 1964 he joined the 60th Infantry Regiment de Lons-le-Saunier, but was imprisoned for insubordination. On his return to life, he worked in his mothers florist shop which she had been able to open on rue dAligre. He found this work dull, and suddenly quit, which caused a breach with his mother. At the end of the 1960s he tried his luck as a singer in cafes, among the patrons of the Café de la Gare were Georges Moustaki, Raymond Devos, Jean Ferrat, Jacques Brel, Leni Escudero, Pierre Perret and Jean Yanne. However, he withdrew after pressure from serious politicians, in 1984 Coluche was awarded the César Award for Best Actor for his role in the film Tchao Pantin directed by Claude Berri, a film that mirrored his chaotic personal life

So Long, Stooge is a 1983 film directed by Claude Berri. It is based on a novel by Alain Page, coluche, the main actor, won the Best Actor award in 1984 César Award. The film was selected as the French entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 57th Academy Awards, Lambert, a withdrawn middle-aged man, works the night shift at a Parisian petrol station. He has no friends, no family, his companion is his bottle of rum. One night, a young Arab man, Bensoussan, enters his shop — and this stranger has also no family, lives alone in a dingy room, and scrapes together a living as a drug dealer. The two solitary men develop a friendship — but this is brought to an end when Bensoussan is killed in front of Lambert. Lambert soon realises that his new friend was murdered by his drug dealing associates and sets out to avenge his death — assisted by Lola, by doing this, Lambert manages to come to terms with his own tragic past

Alain Souchon is a French singer-songwriter and actor. He has released 15 albums and has played roles in seven films, Alain Souchon was born in Casablanca, Morocco. His family on his mothers side is Swiss, and he has dual French-Swiss nationality, six months after he was born, his family moved to France. When he was 15 his father died in an accident and his mother sent him to a French college in England, but due to problems registering he decided to stay in London and work. Upon returning to France he took up guitar, influenced by English, in 1970, he married and had his first son continuing to play in the cabarets and bars in the Rive Gauche of Paris. Souchon signed his first contract in 1971 with the Pathe-Marconi label but had no success, bob Socquet, the artistic director of RCA encouraged him to perform his song Lamour 1830 at the Rose DOr of Antibes contest. Souchon then began to collaborate with composer/arranger Laurent Voulzy, they would write together, Souchons first hit was Jai 10 ans, from the album of the same name. He continued releasing albums and in 1978 wrote the theme for François Truffauts 1979 film Love on the Run, at this time his second son was born. In 1980, he was invited to perform at lOlympia and he also began his acting career, most notably starring in the 1983 film Lété Meurtrier. Following the album On avance, he left RCA and signed with Virgin Records at 40 years old, in 1989 La beauté de Ava Gardner was voted best title of the year by the Victoires de la Musique. Then came Souchons biggest hit Foule sentimentale from 1993s million-selling Cest déja ça, at the 20th anniversary of the Victoires de la Musique in 1995, Alain Souchon received the award for best Chanson Originale for his song Foule Sentimentale.
