Album

Album, is a collection of audio recordings issued as a single item on CD, record, audio tape, or another medium. Albums of recorded music were developed in the early 20th century, first as books of individual 78rpm records, vinyl LPs are still issued, though in the 21st century album sales have mostly focused on compact disc and MP3 formats. The audio cassette was a format used from the late 1970s through to the 1990s alongside vinyl, an album may be recorded in a recording studio, in a concert venue, at home, in the field, or a mix of places. Recording may take a few hours to years to complete, usually in several takes with different parts recorded separately. Recordings that are done in one take without overdubbing are termed live, the majority of studio recordings contain an abundance of editing, sound effects, voice adjustments, etc. With modern recording technology, musicians can be recorded in separate rooms or at times while listening to the other parts using headphones. Album covers and liner notes are used, and sometimes additional information is provided, such as analysis of the recording, historically, the term album was applied to a collection of various items housed in a book format. In musical usage the word was used for collections of pieces of printed music from the early nineteenth century. Later, collections of related 78rpm records were bundled in book-like albums, the LP record, or 33 1⁄3 rpm microgroove vinyl record, is a gramophone record format introduced by Columbia Records in 1948. It was adopted by the industry as a standard format for the album. Apart from relatively minor refinements and the important later addition of stereophonic sound capability, the term album had been carried forward from the early nineteenth century when it had been used for collections of short pieces of music. Later, collections of related 78rpm records were bundled in book-like albums, as part of a trend of shifting sales in the music industry, some commenters have declared that the early 21st century experienced the death of the album. Sometimes shorter albums are referred to as mini-albums or EPs, Albums such as Tubular Bells, Amarok, Hergest Ridge by Mike Oldfield, and Yess Close to the Edge, include fewer than four tracks. There are no rules against artists such as Pinhead Gunpowder referring to their own releases under thirty minutes as albums. These are known as box sets, material is stored on an album in sections termed tracks, normally 11 or 12 tracks. A music track is a song or instrumental recording. The term is associated with popular music where separate tracks are known as album tracks. Céline Marie Claudette Dion, CC OQ ChLD is a Canadian singer and businesswoman. Dion first gained recognition in the 1980s by winning both the 1982 Yamaha World Popular Song Festival and the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest where she represented Switzerland. Following a series of French albums during the 1980s, she signed on to Epic Records in the United States, in 1990, Dion released her debut English-language album, Unison, establishing herself as a viable pop artist in North America and other English-speaking areas of the world. During the 1990s, with the help of Angélil, she achieved fame after releasing several English albums along with additional French albums. Her albums, Falling into You and Lets Talk About Love, were certified diamond in the US while Deux became the best-selling French-language album of all time. However, in 1999 at the height of her success, Dion announced a hiatus from entertainment to start a family and spend time with her husband and she returned to the top of pop music in 2002 and signed to perform nightly in A New Day. A five-star theatrical show at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, Paradise and it became the most successful residency show of all time, grossing US $385 million. Dions music has influenced by genres ranging from rock and R&B to gospel. Her recordings are mainly in French and English, although she sings in Spanish, Italian, German, Latin, Japanese. While her releases have received mixed critical reception, she is regarded as one of pop musics most influential voices. Dion has won five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year and she is the second best-selling female artist in the US during the Nielsen SoundScan era. In 2003, Dion was honoured by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry for selling over 50 million albums in Europe, Dion remains the best-selling Canadian artist and one of the best-selling artists of all time with record sales of over 200 million copies worldwide. Dion was born in Charlemagne, Quebec, Canada, the youngest of 14 children of Thérèse, a homemaker, and Adhémar Dion, Dion was raised a Roman Catholic in a poverty-stricken, but, by her own account, happy home in Charlemagne. Music had always been a part of the Dion family, indeed, Dion herself was named after the song Céline. Thereafter, she continued to perform with her siblings in her parentss small piano bar called Le Vieux Baril, from an early age, Dion had dreamed of being a performer. In a 1994 interview with People magazine, she recalled, I missed my family and my home, I had one dream, I wanted to be a singer. At age 12, Dion collaborated with her mother and her brother Jacques to write and compose her first song, Ce nétait quun rêve, whose title translates as It Was Only a Dream or Nothing But A Dream. Pop music

Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form in the United States and United Kingdom during the mid 1950s. The terms popular music and pop music are used interchangeably, although the former describes all music that is popular. Pop and rock were synonymous terms until the late 1960s, when they were used in opposition from each other. Although pop music is seen as just the singles charts, it is not the sum of all chart music. Pop music is eclectic, and often borrows elements from other such as urban, dance, rock, Latin. Identifying factors include generally short to medium-length songs written in a format, as well as the common use of repeated choruses, melodic tunes. David Hatch and Stephen Millward define pop music as a body of music which is distinguishable from popular, jazz, according to Pete Seeger, pop music is professional music which draws upon both folk music and fine arts music. Although pop music is seen as just the singles charts, it is not the sum of all chart music, the music charts contain songs from a variety of sources, including classical, jazz, rock, and novelty songs. Pop music, as a genre, is seen as existing and developing separately, pop music continuously evolves along with the terms definition. The term pop song was first recorded as being used in 1926, Hatch and Millward indicate that many events in the history of recording in the 1920s can be seen as the birth of the modern pop music industry, including in country, blues and hillbilly music. The Oxford Dictionary of Music states that while pops earlier meaning meant concerts appealing to a wide audience. Since the late 1950s, however, pop has had the meaning of non-classical mus, usually in the form of songs, performed by such artists as the Beatles. Grove Music Online also states that, in the early 1960s pop music competed terminologically with beat music, while in the USA its coverage overlapped with that of rock and roll. From about 1967, the term was used in opposition to the term rock music. Whereas rock aspired to authenticity and an expansion of the possibilities of music, pop was more commercial, ephemeral. It is not driven by any significant ambition except profit and commercial reward, and, in musical terms, it is essentially conservative. It is, provided from on high rather than being made from below, pop is not a do-it-yourself music but is professionally produced and packaged. The beat and the melodies tend to be simple, with limited harmonic accompaniment, the lyrics of modern pop songs typically focus on simple themes – often love and romantic relationships – although there are notable exceptions

A record producer or music producer oversees and manages the sound recording and production of a band or performers music, which may range from recording one song to recording a lengthy concept album. A producer has many roles during the recording process, the roles of a producer vary. The producer may perform these roles himself, or help select the engineer, the producer may also pay session musicians and engineers and ensure that the entire project is completed within the record companies budget. A record producer or music producer has a broad role in overseeing and managing the recording. Producers also often take on an entrepreneurial role, with responsibility for the budget, schedules, contracts. In the 2010s, the industry has two kinds of producers with different roles, executive producer and music producer. Executive producers oversee project finances while music producers oversee the process of recording songs or albums. In most cases the producer is also a competent arranger, composer. The producer will also liaise with the engineer who concentrates on the technical aspects of recording. Noted producer Phil Ek described his role as the person who creatively guides or directs the process of making a record, indeed, in Bollywood music, the designation actually is music director. The music producers job is to create, shape, and mold a piece of music, at the beginning of record industry, producer role was technically limited to record, in one shot, artists performing live. The role of producers changed progressively over the 1950s and 1960s due to technological developments, the development of multitrack recording caused a major change in the recording process. Before multitracking, all the elements of a song had to be performed simultaneously, all of these singers and musicians had to be assembled in a large studio and the performance had to be recorded. As well, for a song that used 20 instruments, it was no longer necessary to get all the players in the studio at the same time. Examples include the rock sound effects of the 1960s, e. g. playing back the sound of recorded instruments backwards or clanging the tape to produce unique sound effects. These new instruments were electric or electronic, and thus they used instrument amplifiers, new technologies like multitracking changed the goal of recording, A producer could blend together multiple takes and edit together different sections to create the desired sound. For example, in jazz fusion Bandleader-composer Miles Davis album Bitches Brew, producers like Phil Spector and George Martin were soon creating recordings that were, in practical terms, almost impossible to realise in live performance. In music, a single or record single is a type of release, typically a song recording of fewer tracks than an LP record, an album or an EP record. This can be released for sale to the public in a variety of different formats, in most cases, a single is a song that is released separately from an album, although it usually also appears on an album. Typically, these are the songs from albums that are released separately for promotional uses such as digital download or commercial radio airplay and are expected to be the most popular, in other cases a recording released as a single may not appear on an album. As digital downloading and audio streaming have become prevalent, it is often possible for every track on an album to also be available separately. Nevertheless, the concept of a single for an album has been retained as an identification of a heavily promoted or more popular song within an album collection. Despite being referred to as a single, singles can include up to as many as three tracks on them. The biggest digital music distributor, iTunes, accepts as many as three tracks less than ten minutes each as a single, as well as popular music player Spotify also following in this trend. Any more than three tracks on a release or longer than thirty minutes in total running time is either an Extended Play or if over six tracks long. The basic specifications of the single were made in the late 19th century. Gramophone discs were manufactured with a range of speeds and in several sizes. By about 1910, however, the 10-inch,78 rpm shellac disc had become the most commonly used format, the inherent technical limitations of the gramophone disc defined the standard format for commercial recordings in the early 20th century.26 rpm. With these factors applied to the 10-inch format, songwriters and performers increasingly tailored their output to fit the new medium, the breakthrough came with Bob Dylans Like a Rolling Stone. Singles have been issued in various formats, including 7-inch, 10-inch, other, less common, formats include singles on digital compact cassette, DVD, and LD, as well as many non-standard sizes of vinyl disc. Some artist release singles on records, a more common in musical subcultures. The most common form of the single is the 45 or 7-inch. The names are derived from its speed,45 rpm. The 7-inch 45 rpm record was released 31 March 1949 by RCA Victor as a smaller, more durable, the first 45 rpm records were monaural, with recordings on both sides of the disc. As stereo recordings became popular in the 1960s, almost all 45 rpm records were produced in stereo by the early 1970s

Christmas music

Christmas music comprises a variety of genres of music normally performed or heard around the Christmas season. Music was a feature of the Christmas season and its celebrations. The earliest examples are hymnographic works intended for use in observance of both the Feast of the Nativity and Theophany, many of which are still in use by the Eastern Orthodox Church. The 13th century saw the rise of the written in the vernacular. In the Middle Ages, the English combined circle dances with singing, later, the word carol came to mean a song in which a religious topic is treated in a style that is familiar or festive. From Italy, it passed to France and Germany, and later to England, Music in itself soon became one of the greatest tributes to Christmas, and Christmas music includes some of the noblest compositions of the great musicians. During the Commonwealth of England government under Cromwell, the Rump Parliament prohibited the practice of singing Christmas carols as Pagan, like other customs associated with popular Catholic Christianity, it earned the disapproval of Protestant Puritans. Famously, Cromwells interregnum prohibited all celebrations of the Christmas holiday and this attempt to ban the public celebration of Christmas can also be seen in the early history of Father Christmas. The Westminster Assembly of Divines established Sunday as the holy day in the calendar in 1644. The new liturgy produced for the English church recognised this in 1645 and its celebration was declared an offence by Parliament in 1647. There is some debate as to the effectiveness of this ban, Puritans generally disapproved of the celebration of Christmas—a trend which continually resurfaced in Europe and the USA through the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. William Sandyss Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern, contained the first appearance in print of many now-classic English carols, singing carols in church was instituted on Christmas Eve 1880 in Truro Cathedral, Cornwall, England, which is now seen in churches all over the world. Christmas festivities, including music, are celebrated in a more secular fashion by such institutions as the Santa Claus Village, in Rovaniemi. The tradition of singing Christmas carols in return for alms or charity began in England in the century after the Restoration. Also from the century, there was the English custom, predominantly involving women, of taking a wassail bowl to their neighbours to solicit gifts. The status of Christmas as an important feast within the year also means there is a long tradition of music specially composed for celebrating the season. S. Jacques Brel

He was widely considered a master of the modern chanson. In French-speaking countries, Brel was also an actor, appearing in ten films. He also directed two films, one of which, Le Far West, was nominated for the Palme dOr at the Cannes Film Festival in 1973, having sold over 25 million records worldwide, Brel is the third best-selling Belgian recording artist of all time. Brel married Thérèse Miche Michielsen in 1950 and the couple had three children and he also had a romantic relationship with actress and dancer Maddly Bamy from 1972 until his death in 1978. Jacques Romain Georges Brel was born on 8 April 1929 in Schaerbeek, Brussels, to Élisabeth Lisette and he came from a family of Flemish descent, who had adopted the French language, part of his family originated in Zandvoorde, near Ypres. His father worked for Cominex, a firm, and later became co-director of a company that manufactured cardboard. Jacques and his older brother Pierre grew up in an austere household, in Brussels, the family lived at 138 Avenue du Diamant in Schaerbeek, then moved to 26 Boulevard Belgica–Belgicalaan in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek, and finally settled at 7 Rue Jacques-Manne in Anderlecht. Jacques was close to his mother, fascinated by her generosity and sense of humour, in September 1941, his parents enrolled Jacques at the Institut Saint-Louis at rue du Marais near the Botanical Garden of Brussels. Although he did poorly in many subjects, he did well in history and French and he helped set up the schools drama club, taking on his first stage roles with great enthusiasm. He wrote short stories, poems, and essays, in 1944, at the age of 15, Jacques began playing the guitar. The following year he formed his own group with friends. In the spring of 1947, during his year at Saint-Louis. Published pseudonymously, the story is about a man on his death bed who encourages his grandson to run away while the rest of the family makes arrangements for his funeral. Despite his growing talent for writing, Jacques was never a good student, with an academic career not in his future, the 18-year-old Jacques went to work at his fathers cardboard factory in August 1947. His job at Vanneste and Brel was predictable and uninspiring—a routine that involved fixing prices, apart from joining the company football team, he showed little interest in the companys social activities and events. Perhaps to offset the boredom of his office routine, he joined a local Catholic youth organisation La Franche Cordée. Dedicated to philanthropic work, the group organised religious retreats, fundraising events, Jacques supported these activities with great enthusiasm and believed strongly in FCs mission. His parents were pleased with their sons dedication, and provided him with the company van and family car to support his FC activities

Bucks Fizz

Bucks Fizz are a British pop group that achieved success in the 1980s, most notably for winning the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest with the song Making Your Mind Up. The group was formed in January 1981 specifically for the contest and comprised four vocalists, Bobby G, Cheryl Baker, Mike Nolan and they achieved instant attention with the dance routine which accompanied the song, involving a skirt-rip. They also had UK Top 10 hits with Now Those Days Are Gone, If You Cant Stand the Heat, When We Were Young and their worldwide record sales have exceeded 15 million. The line-up of the group has changed a number of times over the years, in late 1980, Nichola Martin and Andy Hill sought to create a new group to enter their song Making Your Mind Up in the Eurovision Song Contest. The first member to be recruited was Mike Nolan, who was known to Martin, together, they recorded a demo of the song and entered it for inclusion in A Song for Europe – the preliminary heats for the contest. Realising that a name was needed for the artists, Martin quickly decided on Bucks Fizz. In January, Martin contacted Cheryl Baker to join them, as he remembered her from the 1978 Eurovision group, concurrent to this, Martin was holding auditions for another male vocalist and female vocalist, should Baker turn down the position. At the end of auditions, Martin had found a male singer, Stephen Fischer and female. Fischer then became unavailable as he was starring in a musical at the time and Martin hired another auditionee, the four members met for the first time on 11 January 1981. An associate of Martins, Jill Shirley agreed to manage the group, the routine itself was choreographed by Chrissie Wickham, a former member of dance troupe, Hot Gossip, although Martin, Baker and Aston have all since laid claim to the skirt-rip idea. On 11 March, A Song for Europe took place with the unknown Bucks Fizz competing against well-known act Liquid Gold, as well as Hill and Martins own group, Making Your Mind Up became an easy winner and the group recorded the song with Hill as producer. Later in the month it was released as a single and entered the charts at No.24, by the time the contest was staged, the single had risen to No.2. On 4 April, Bucks Fizz represented United Kingdom in the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest, although they were favourites to win, the song faced stiff competition and after a vocally unsound rendition, the early votes were poor. Halfway through the process, Bucks Fizz took the lead. Ultimately, Bucks Fizz won the contest by a margin of four points, Making Your Mind Up became a major hit around the continent, reaching No.1 in the UK as well as eight other countries. It charted highly in other such as Australia, eventually selling four million copies worldwide. A follow-up single was recorded amid promotional tours and the image was revamped. In May, the single Piece of the Action was released, the song boasted a contemporary pop sound and high production values, in contrast to the rocknroll style of Making Your Mind Up

The Land of Make Believe

The Land of Make Believe is a 1981 single by British band Bucks Fizz. It reached No.1 in the UK in early 1982 - the second single by the band to do so, the song was produced by Andy Hill with music by Hill and lyrics by ex-King Crimson member Peter Sinfield. Despite the apparent sugar-coated style of the song, Sinfield later claimed it was an attack on Margaret Thatcher and her governments policy at the time. The Land of Make Believe became a big hit across Europe in early 1982, topping the charts in Netherlands, Belgium, the song was later covered by pop band allSTARS* for a 2002 single release. The Land of Make Believe was the second of three UK #1 singles for the British Eurovision winners Bucks Fizz, staying at the top for two weeks in January 1982 and it remained on the charts for 16 weeks. The lyrics are based on a dream where ghostly voices lure the child outside to a world where everything is bright and happy. Characters, Superman and Captain Kidd are referenced in the lyrics, the close of the song features a nursery rhyme narrated by Abby Kimber, who was the 11-year-old daughter of Bill Kimber, an executive of RCA Records. This was a piece penned by Sinfield. At the time, radio stations were instructed to fade the song before the narration, during the recording member Mike Nolan expressed reservations for the song and told producer Andy Hill that it would not be a hit and probably the end for the band. Hill however told Nolan that Bobby G and Cheryl Baker had already recorded their parts of the song and had said that they liked it. Nolan later admitted that his judgement was obviously wrong, Bobby G spent an afternoon recording harmonies for the middle 8 of the song, but after he left the studio, the engineer accidentally wiped the tape and the vocal part was never re-recorded. The music video was filmed at White City, London swimming baths and is an homage of various childhood stories, the remainder of the video consists of the group performing the song, intercut with brief fantastical scenes. The costumes the group wore in the video were used in television appearances for the song. Member Jay Aston chose the outfits, with the costumes from Kahn & Bell on Londons Kings Road. They cost between £50 and £120 each, Aston has since remarked that it was one of her favourite looks for the band and in reference to hers and Bakers costume said we were ten years ahead of Madonna with the cone boobs. The single was released in November 1981 and became a top 10 hit in December, the following week it was placed at No.2, behind The Human Leagues Dont You Want Me, before finally taking over at No.1 in January. Critical reaction to the song was favourable with Record Mirror stating, Prejudices and preconceptions aside, its an excellent record, members Bobby G and Cheryl Baker have both named it as the best of their own songs. The song became the groups biggest-selling single in the UK, outselling their Eurovision winner Making Your Mind Up and it also reached No.1 in the Netherlands, Belgium and Ireland, while in Germany it also became their biggest selling single

Think Twice (Celine Dion song)

Think Twice is a song written by Andy Hill and Peter Sinfield, famously recorded by Canadian singer Celine Dion. Production on the track was by Christopher Neil and Aldo Nova, the song is rock-influenced and features a guitar solo, one of only a few of Dions songs to do so, performed by Nova. Lyrically, the song is about the protagonist telling her lover to think twice before leaving her, writer Andy Hill was known for his association with Bucks Fizz and Peter Sinfield was a former member of the rock group King Crimson. Two versions of the video exist, the first was released in August 1994, later because of the huge success in the UK. It aired in the UK Top of the Pops television programme, the UK music video was directed by Randee St. Nicholas. The model of the first version of the Think Twices video is Steve Santagati, the B-sides of this single were taken mainly from Dion chante Plamondon album, which was released at that time worldwide. It was also the first time that Dions English single included French songs as B-sides all over the world, Think Twice was included later on the European and Australian editions of All the Way. A Decade of Song greatest hits and European edition of My Love and it remains a staple of Dions live set in countries where the song was a runaway hit. Dion performed Think Twice at the 1995 World Music Awards, Think Twice received an Ivor Novello Award for the Best Song Musically and Lyrically in 1995. Think Twice was covered by Alana Dante in 1996, Maribel Gonzalez in 1999 and it was also performed by Kelly Clarkson on American Idol and Carolynne Good on Fame Academy. The video opens with a shot of Dion lying in bed and she wakes up and starts singing as a car drives up to her house outside. A man, Dions lover, exits the vehicle and walks up to the front door into the house and he kisses her cheek and as Celine touches him on the shoulder, the man backs away. He lies down on the bed shirtless and sinks his head into the pillow, the camera then shows him looking at the ceiling while Dion sits in the background. The man is seen carving ice sculptures with a chainsaw. As Celine continues singing, there is a shot of her and her lover apparently arguing, Dion then continues to sing wearing a blue jacket with shots of the man carving ice sculptures. Dion leans against one of the sculptures while her lover lies in bed and he then rises while Celine continues singing. There is then an interlude with shots of the man in his garage and arguing with Dion, before heading out into his car. He is then sitting in a pile of sawdust

Call the Man is the fifth and last commercial single from Celine Dions album Falling into You. It was released on 16 June 1997 outside the North America, the music video was directed by Greg Masuak in 1995 and already used for two other songs in edited versions, Je sais pas and Next Plane Out. The single was released during the second European leg of the Falling into You Tour and peaked at number 8 in Ireland and 11 in the United Kingdom, on 17 April 1997 Dion performed Call the Man with a 30-voice gospel choir during the World Music Awards ceremony. She was the big star of that evening, winning three awards, Best-selling Canadian Female Singer, Best-selling Artist and Best-selling Pop Artist, after selling over 25 million albums in 1996. Sleigh Ride

Sleigh Ride is a popular light orchestral Christmas music standard composed by Leroy Anderson. The composer had the idea for the piece during a heat wave in July 1946. It was originally a piece, the lyrics, about someone asking another to join them for a ride in a sleigh, were written by Mitchell Parish in 1950. The orchestral version was first recorded in 1949 by Arthur Fiedler, Sleigh Ride was a hit record on RCA Victor Red Seal 49-0515 / 10-1484, and has become a signature song for the orchestra. The 45 rpm version was issued on red vinyl. The Pops has also recorded the song with John Williams, their conductor from 1979 to 1995, Leroy Anderson recorded his own version of Sleigh Ride in 1950 on Decca 9-16000 /16000. The recording hit the Cashbox magazine best-sellers chart when re-released in 1952, in 1950 The Andrews Sisters recorded the first vocal version. Although Sleigh Ride is often associated with Christmas, and appears on Christmas compilation albums, the song is noted for the sound of the horses clip-clopping, as well as the sound of the whips used to get the horses moving. Toward the end of the piece, a trumpet makes the sound of the horse whinnying, the Ronettes version makes use of the clip-clopping as well as the sound of a recorded horse whinnying, heard at the beginning and end of the song. Andersons recording remains the most popular version, while Johnny Mathiss recording has become the most popular vocal version. The piece is in rondo form, the middle section utilizes an unusual, unprepared modulation to III, then to II. The difficulty of singing this has caused several recordings to alter the harmonies or omit the section altogether,1949 – Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops. The original hit recording, this version has never been available on CD, other Boston Pops recordings have been made under conductors Fiedler, John Williams, and Keith Lockhart. The Decca Gold Label Series singles, both 45 and 78 rpm, referenced above were not issued as individual records and they were part of the four-disc set Leroy Anderson Conducts His Own Compositions. Leroy Anderson

Leroy Anderson, was an American composer of short, light concert pieces, many of which were introduced by the Boston Pops Orchestra under the direction of Arthur Fiedler. John Williams described him as one of the great American masters of light orchestral music, born in Cambridge, Massachusetts to Swedish parents, Anderson was given his first piano lessons by his mother, who was a church organist. He continued studying piano at the New England Conservatory of Music, in 1925 Anderson entered Harvard University, where he studied musical harmony with Walter Spalding, counterpoint with Edward Ballantine, canon and fugue with William C. Hill and Walter Piston, composition with Walter Piston and double bass with Gaston Dufresne and he also studied organ with Henry Gideon. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, Magna cum laude in 1929 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, in Harvard University Graduate School, he studied composition with Walter Piston and Georges Enescu and received a Master of Arts in Music in 1930. At the time he was working as organist and choir director at the East Milton Congregational Church, leading the Harvard University Band, and conducting and arranging for dance bands around Boston. Andersons first work was the 1938 Jazz Pizzicato, but at just over ninety seconds the piece was too short for a three-minute 78-RPM single of the period, Fiedler suggested writing a companion piece and Anderson wrote Jazz Legato later that same year. The combined recording went on to one of Andersons signature compositions. In 1942 Leroy Anderson joined the U. S. Army, counter Intelligence Corps as a translator and interpreter, in 1945 he was reassigned to the Pentagon as Chief of the Scandinavian Desk of Military Intelligence. However his duties did not prevent him from composing, and in 1945 he wrote The Syncopated Clock, Anderson became a reserve officer and was recalled to active duty for the Korean War. In 1951 Anderson wrote his first hit, Blue Tango, earning a Golden Disc and his pieces and his recordings during the fifties conducting a studio orchestra were immense commercial successes. Blue Tango was the first instrumental recording ever to one million copies. His most famous pieces are probably Sleigh Ride and The Syncopated Clock, in February 1951, WCBS-TV in New York City selected Syncopated Clock as the theme song for The Late Show, the WCBS late-night movie. Anderson started the work during a wave in August 1946. The Boston Pops recording of it was the first pure orchestral piece to reach No.1 on the Billboard Pop Music chart, from 1952 to 1961, Andersons composition Plink, Plank, Plunk. was used as the theme for the CBS panel show Ive Got A Secret. Andersons musical style employs creative instrumental effects and occasionally use of sound-generating items such as typewriters. Anderson wrote his Piano Concerto in C in 1953 but withdrew it, in 1988 the Anderson family decided to publish the work. Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra released the first recording of this work, four other recordings, including one for piano, in 1958, Anderson composed the music for the Broadway show Goldilocks with orchestrations by Philip J. Lang

The Christmas Song is a classic Christmas song written in 1945 by Bob Wells and Mel Tormé. According to Tormé, the song was written during a hot summer. In an effort to cool by thinking cool, the most-performed Christmas song was born. I saw a spiral pad on his piano with four written in pencil. Bob didnt think he was writing a song lyric and he said he thought if he could immerse himself in winter he could cool off. Peter Sinfield

In 2005, Sinfield was noted as a Prog rock hero in Q magazine, for his impressive lyrical contribution and creative influence while working within the rock music industry. As a lyricist, Sinfield has an approach to the sounds of words, filled with surreal imagery. Sinfield was born at Fulham, London, to mixed English-Irish ancestry and he seldom had contact with his father Ian. It was there that Sinfield discovered a love of words and their use and meanings and he came to devour books of all kinds, especially poetry. He later attended Ranelagh Grammar School in Bracknell, Berkshire and he left school at sixteen and worked briefly as a travel agent, believing that this would allow him to see the world. He then went on to work for a company for six years, travelling around Europe when he could. He spent a number of years drifting around Morocco and Spain before returning to England, mcDonald let the others know that he was already working with someone who could write lyrics. Peter Giles left the group at about time, to be replaced by Greg Lake. In his own words, I became their pet hippie, because I could tell them where to go to buy the funny clothes that they saw everyone wearing, Sinfield also came up with the name King Crimson. Sinfield loved working with the band and, in addition to writing the lyrics that came to be part of King Crimsons trademark. He was not a good enough singer to contribute to the vocals. However, Sinfield occasionally added touches of EMS VCS3 synthesizer, see, e. g. the Ladies of the Road album recorded live on tour in 1971 and 72 or Indoor Games and Happy Family on the Lizard album. Fripp became involved with projects, which left Sinfield with much of the responsibility for the final version and design of the album. Even so, the relationship between Sinfield and Fripp had become strained as the band progressed. On their next album, Islands, Sinfield began exploring new lyrical territory, on 1 January 1972, however, following a tour of the United States, Fripp got tired of Sinfields fantasy-based lyrics and Sinfield left. In 1972, Sinfield remained associated with E. G, Sinfields debut album, Still, united numerous former and future Crimson alumni. Sinfield intended Still as the start of a career, but while working on it, he was approached by Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Still was originally released on ELP’s own Manticore label in 1973, already having a fear of the stage which he had little time to overcome due to writing demands, his solo career was put on hold and he worked with ELP for the next few years

The Battle Hymn of the Republic, also known as Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory outside of the United States, is a song by American writer Julia Ward Howe using the music from the song John Browns Body. Howes more famous lyrics were written in November 1861, and first published in The Atlantic Monthly in February 1862, the song links the judgment of the wicked at the end of the age with the American Civil War. Since that time, it has become a popular and well-known American patriotic song. The Glory, Hallelujah tune was a folk hymn developed in the oral tradition of camp meetings in the southern United States. In the first known version, Canaans Happy Shore, the text includes the verse Oh, Brothers will you meet me /On Canaans happy shore. And chorus There well shout and give him glory /For glory is his own, the tune and variants of these words spread across both the southern and northern United States. At a flag-raising ceremony at Fort Warren, near Boston, Massachusetts on Sunday May 12,1861, Brothers tune and the Glory, Hallelujah chorus, was publicly played perhaps for the first time. The American Civil War had begun the previous month, in 1890, George Kimball wrote his account of how the 2nd Infantry Battalion of the Massachusetts militia, known as the Tiger Battalion, collectively worked out the lyrics to John Browns Body. Kimball wrote, We had a jovial Scotchman in the battalion, named John Brown. and as he happened to bear the name of the old hero of Harpers Ferry. These ditties underwent various ramifications, until eventually the lines were reached, — John Browns body lies a-mouldering in the grave, and, — Hes gone to be a soldier in the army of the Lord, His souls marching on. These lines seemed to give satisfaction, the idea that Browns soul was marching on receiving recognition at once as having a germ of inspiration in it. They were sung over and over again with a deal of gusto. Some leaders of the battalion, feeling the words were coarse and irreverent, tried to urge the adoption of more fitting lyrics, the lyrics were soon prepared for publication by members of the battalion, together with publisher C. S. Hall. They selected and polished verses they felt appropriate, and may even have enlisted the services of a poet to help polish. Kimballs battalion was dispatched to Murray, Kentucky early in the Civil War, rufus R. Dawes, then in command of Company K of the 6th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, stated in his memoirs that the man who started the singing was Sergeant John Ticknor of his company. Howes companion at the review, The Reverend James Freeman Clarke, of the writing of the lyrics, Howe remembered, I went to bed that night as usual, and slept, according to my wont, quite soundly. I awoke in the gray of the twilight, and as I lay waiting for the dawn. Having thought out all the stanzas, I said to myself, I must get up and write these verses down, lest I fall asleep again and forget them

The groove usually starts near the periphery and ends near the center of the disc. The phonograph disc record was the medium used for music reproduction until late in the 20th century. It had co-existed with the cylinder from the late 1880s. Records retained the largest market share even when new formats such as compact cassette were mass-marketed, by the late 1980s, digital media, in the form of the compact disc, had gained a larger market share, and the vinyl record left the mainstream in 1991. The phonograph record has made a resurgence in the early 21st century –9.2 million records were sold in the U. S. in 2014. Likewise, in the UK sales have increased five-fold from 2009 to 2014, as of 2017,48 record pressing facilities remain worldwide,18 in the United States and 30 in other countries. The increased popularity of vinyl has led to the investment in new, only two producers of lacquers remains, Apollo Masters in California, USA, and MDC in Japan. Vinyl records may be scratched or warped if stored incorrectly but if they are not exposed to heat or broken. The large cover are valued by collectors and artists for the space given for visual expression, in the 2000s, these tracings were first scanned by audio engineers and digitally converted into audible sound. Phonautograms of singing and speech made by Scott in 1860 were played back as sound for the first time in 2008, along with a tuning fork tone and unintelligible snippets recorded as early as 1857, these are the earliest known recordings of sound. In 1877, Thomas Edison invented the phonograph, unlike the phonautograph, it was capable of both recording and reproducing sound. Despite the similarity of name, there is no evidence that Edisons phonograph was based on Scotts phonautograph. Edison first tried recording sound on a paper tape, with the idea of creating a telephone repeater analogous to the telegraph repeater he had been working on. The tinfoil was wrapped around a metal cylinder and a sound-vibrated stylus indented the tinfoil while the cylinder was rotated. The recording could be played back immediately, Edison also invented variations of the phonograph that used tape and disc formats. A decade later, Edison developed a greatly improved phonograph that used a wax cylinder instead of a foil sheet. This proved to be both a better-sounding and far more useful and durable device, the wax phonograph cylinder created the recorded sound market at the end of the 1880s and dominated it through the early years of the 20th century. Berliners earliest discs, first marketed in 1889, but only in Europe, were 12.5 cm in diameter, both the records and the machine were adequate only for use as a toy or curiosity, due to the limited sound quality

Compact Cassette

The Compact Cassette or Musicassette, also commonly called cassette tape, audio cassette, or simply tape or cassette, is an analog magnetic tape recording format for audio recording and playback. It was released by Philips in 1962, having developed in Hasselt. Compact cassettes come in two forms, either already containing content as a cassette, or as a fully recordable blank cassette. Its uses ranged from portable audio to home recording to data storage for early microcomputers, the first cassette player designed for use in car dashes was introduced in 1968. Between the early 1970s and the early 2000s, the cassette was one of the two most common formats for prerecorded music, first alongside the LP record and later the compact disc. Compact Cassettes contain two miniature spools, between which a magnetically coated, polyester-type plastic film is passed and wound and these spools and their attendant parts are held inside a protective plastic shell. This reversal is achieved either by flipping the cassette, or by having the machine itself change the direction of tape movement. In 1935, decades before the introduction of the Compact Cassette, AEG released the first reel-to-reel tape recorder and it was based on the invention of the magnetic tape by Fritz Pfleumer, which used similar technology but with open reels. These instruments were expensive and relatively difficult to use and were therefore used mostly by professionals in radio stations. In 1958, following four years of development, RCA Victor introduced the stereo, quarter-inch, reversible, however, it was a large cassette, and offered few pre-recorded tapes. Despite the multiple versions, it failed, consumer use of tape only took off in the early 1960s, after playback machines reached a comfortable, user-friendly design. This was achieved primarily by the introduction of transistors which replaced the bulky, fragile, reel-to-reel tape then became more suitable to household use, but still remained an esoteric product. The team at Philips was led by Lou Ottens in Hasselt, Philips was competing with Telefunken and Grundig in a race to establish its cassette tape as the worldwide standard, and it wanted support from Japanese electronics manufacturers. However, the Philips Compact Cassette became dominant as a result of Philips decision to license the format free of charge, Philips also released the Norelco Carry-Corder 150 recorder/player in the US in November 1964. By 1966 over 250,000 recorders had been sold in the US alone, by 1968,85 manufacturers had sold over 2.4 million players. By the end of the 1960s, the business was worth an estimated 150 million dollars. In the early years sound quality was mediocre, but it improved dramatically by the early 1970s when it caught up with the quality of 8-track tape, the Compact Cassette went on to become a popular alternative to the 12-inch vinyl LP during the late 1970s. The mass production of blank Compact Cassettes began in 1964 in Hanover, prerecorded music cassettes were launched in Europe in late 1965

The International Standard Book Number is a unique numeric commercial book identifier. An ISBN is assigned to each edition and variation of a book, for example, an e-book, a paperback and a hardcover edition of the same book would each have a different ISBN. The ISBN is 13 digits long if assigned on or after 1 January 2007, the method of assigning an ISBN is nation-based and varies from country to country, often depending on how large the publishing industry is within a country. The initial ISBN configuration of recognition was generated in 1967 based upon the 9-digit Standard Book Numbering created in 1966, the 10-digit ISBN format was developed by the International Organization for Standardization and was published in 1970 as international standard ISO2108. Occasionally, a book may appear without a printed ISBN if it is printed privately or the author does not follow the usual ISBN procedure, however, this can be rectified later. Another identifier, the International Standard Serial Number, identifies periodical publications such as magazines, the ISBN configuration of recognition was generated in 1967 in the United Kingdom by David Whitaker and in 1968 in the US by Emery Koltay. The 10-digit ISBN format was developed by the International Organization for Standardization and was published in 1970 as international standard ISO2108, the United Kingdom continued to use the 9-digit SBN code until 1974. The ISO on-line facility only refers back to 1978, an SBN may be converted to an ISBN by prefixing the digit 0. For example, the edition of Mr. J. G. Reeder Returns, published by Hodder in 1965, has SBN340013818 -340 indicating the publisher,01381 their serial number. This can be converted to ISBN 0-340-01381-8, the check digit does not need to be re-calculated, since 1 January 2007, ISBNs have contained 13 digits, a format that is compatible with Bookland European Article Number EAN-13s. An ISBN is assigned to each edition and variation of a book, for example, an ebook, a paperback, and a hardcover edition of the same book would each have a different ISBN. Discogs, short for discographies, is a website and crowdsourced database of information about audio recordings, including commercial releases, promotional releases, and bootleg or off-label releases. The Discogs servers, currently hosted under the domain name discogs. com, are owned by Zink Media, Inc. and are located in Portland, Oregon, US. While the site lists releases in all genres and on all formats, it is known as the largest online database of electronic music releases. Discogs currently contains over 8 million releases, by nearly 4 and he was inspired by the success of community-built sites such as Slashdot, eBay, and Open Directory Project, and decided to use this model for a music discography database. The sites original goal was to build the most comprehensive database of music, organized around the artists, labels. In 2003 the Discogs system was rewritten, and in January 2004 it began to support other genres. Since then, it has expanded to include rock and jazz in January 2005 and funk/soul, Latin, in January 2006 blues and non-music were added. On 30 June 2004, Discogs published a report, which included information about the number of its contributors and this report claimed that Discogs had 15,788 contributors and 260,789 releases. On 20 July 2007 a new system for sellers was introduced on the site called Market Price History. However, at the beginning of 2008, the Market Price History was also free of charge for all users. In late 2014, the company released two new beta websites, gearogs lets users add and track music equipment like synths, drum machines, and other electronic music making equipment. At the start of 2015, the company began another beta project — Bibliogs, users can submit information about their books, physical or electronic, different versions and editions, and also connect different credits to these books. 21,000 books were submitted by the end of 2016, the project remains in its beta phase. The license has since changed to a public domain one. Prior to the advent of this license and API, Discogs data was only accessible via the Discogs web sites HTML interface and was intended to be viewed only using web browsers, the HTML interface remains the only authorized way to modify Discogs data. On 7 June 2011 version 2 of the API was released, notable in this release was that a license key was no longer required, the default response was changed from XML to JSON, and the 5000 queries per day limit was removed. On 1 November 2011 a major update to version 2 of the API was released and this new release dropped support for XML, data is always returned in JSON format, however the monthly data dumps of new data are only provided in XML format. Dion collaborated on this project and all her next early French recordings with Eddy Marnay who wrote songs for Barbra Streisand, Édith Piaf, Nana Mouskouri and Claude François, among others. The album contains Dions first three singles, Ce nétait quun rêve, La voix du bon Dieu and Lamour viendra, René Angélil, Dions manager mortgaged his home to start his own record company just to produce her first records. He decided to put out two albums at the time, La voix du bon Dieu and Céline Dion chante Noël. They had sold 30,000 copies in 1981 and theyd go on to sell about 125,000 copies the following year, La voix du bon Dieu has sold 100,000 copies in total. Tellement jai damour. is the third French-language studio album by Canadian singer Celine Dion, released in Quebec, Canada on 7 September 1982. The album became Dions first commercial success and it was certified Platinum in Canada and has sold 150,000 copies there. Incognito is the eighth French-language studio album by Canadian singer Celine Dion, released by CBS Records on 2 April 1987 in Quebec, Canada. It features eight songs produced by Jean-Alain Roussel, Aldo Nova, six song were released as singles and all of them reached top five on the Quebec Airplay Chart, including four number ones, Incognito, Lolita, Comme un cœur froid and Dabord, cest quoi lamour. Incognito was certified two-times Platinum in Canada and has sold over 500,000 copies worldwide, Incognito started Dions new look, new sound, new team of writers and producers and was issued by the new record company, CBS Records. The album was released in Quebec, Canada in April 1987 and included songs produced by Jean-Alain Roussel, Aldo Nova and Pierre Bazinet. Lyrics were written by Luc Plamondon, Isa Minoke and Eddy Marnay, the album also contains a French-language cover of Elizabeth Dailys Love in the Shadows, titled Délivre-moi. At the end of 1988, Incognito with different track listing was released in France, instead of Partout je te vois and Délivre-moi, it included the 1988 Eurovision-winning song, Ne partez pas sans moi and a cover of Jean-Pierre Ferlands Ma chambre. In October 1992, Incognito was issued in France with the track listing. The first single, On traverse un miroir entered the Quebec Airplay Chart on 25 April 1987, the second single, Incognito debuted on this chart on 6 June 1987 and topped it for six weeks. The next single, Lolita entered the Quebec Airplay Chart on 3 October 1987, the fourth single, Comme un cœur froid debuted on the chart on 6 February 1988 and also topped it for two weeks. The fifth single, Délivre-moi entered the Quebec Airplay Chart on 18 June 1988, the last Canadian single, Dabord, cest quoi lamour debuted on the chart in Quebec on 17 October 1988 and became Dions fourth number one from Incognito spending two weeks at the top. Jours de fièvre was released as a single in Denmark in late 1988, on 2 April 1987, Dion performed at a special show organized to celebrate the release of Incognito at Club LEsprit in Montreal, Canada. On 7 April 1987, she appeared on the television show Montréal en direct aired on Télé-Metropole and sang On traverse un miroir, Lolita, on 27 September 1987, a television special titled Spécial Incognito aired on Radio-Canada. It included the video for Incognito and performances of songs from Incognito. On 2 November 1987, Dion performed the English-language version of Partout je te vois, on 15 February 1988, Dion sang Incognito, Comme un cœur froid and Memory on Téléfun on TQS. It is her 15th French-language album and 16th in total, in Europe it was renamed Des mots qui sonnent, meaning Words That Sound or Words with Meaning. Dion interprets the words of Luc Plamondon, pop lyricist of French-speaking Canada, the album includes four new songs and eight covers. Le monde est stone and Ziggy were performed originally by Fabienne Thibeault, Thibeault and Dubois sang also Les uns contre les autres. According to AllMusic, on relatively early album, Dion sounds as self-assured. Her voice exudes a passion beyond her years, especially on the albums rocking opener. There were no singles from this album released in Quebec, Canada. Sony Music Entertainment decided to release two singles at the time, in November 1991, Des mots qui sonnent to the pop stations. March 1992 saw the issue of Je danse dans ma tête, quelquun que jaime, quelquun qui maime was chosen in August 1992 as the next single and became a hit reaching number 1 on the airplay chart in Quebec. The album was successful in Quebec. It reached number 57 on the Canadian Albums Chart as Quebec sales did not factor into this chart at that time, in France, the album was renamed Des mots qui sonnent and was promoted by Je danse dans ma tête commercial single, released in April 1992. However, at that time none of them charted, everything had changed in 1993 when Dions single Un garçon pas comme les autres became a smash hit, reaching number 2 and being certified Gold. English version of that song appeared on the Tycoon compilation, as well as the singles B-side, thanks to its success, Des mots qui sonnent charted for the very first time in September 1993. In France alone, Pour que tu maimes encore has sold one million copies. The song was successful in other countries, reaching the top ten in Belgium Flanders. Its her 19th French album and 24th in total, Sil suffisait daimer is the second best-selling French-language album of all time, after Dions own Deux. The project reunited Dion and Jean-Jacques Goldman, who last worked together on the successful album Deux. In their first collaboration Goldman wrote songs for Dion, this time he wrote more in his own style, while letting Dion sing her own unique way, most of the arrangements on that album are simple to let her voice dominate the songs. During the francophone concerts in the Lets Talk About Love Tour, the concerts in Paris were recorded and released as Au cœur du stade in 1999. It is her first new French studio album since 1998s Sil suffisait daimer,1 fille &4 types features thirteen songs written and arranged by Jean-Jacques Goldman, Erick Benzi, Jacques Veneruso and Gildas Arzel, and produced by Benzi. The first single from the album, Tout lor des hommes reached top ten in all Francophone countries, including one in Quebec. It was followed by Et je taime encore and Contre nature,1 fille &4 types received favorable reviews from music critics, some of whom noticed that it is a record that many Dion fans were hoping would arrive one day. On the commercial level, the album became a success. Ten prominent female writers from Quebec and France wrote the lyrics, Jean-Jacques Goldman would be overseeing the album which will be recorded in Las Vegas. On 3 January 2007, Dions official website announced that the new French-language album, the title is a spin-off of Dions 1995 album Deux. Both can be translated as About Them or From Them, with Delles being specifically the feminine version, in a press release from 12 January 2007, it was confirmed that Dion is still working on her upcoming album which is a concept project. Many of Dions long-time collaborators, including Jean-Jacques Goldman, participated in this project, Although Goldman did not write any of the songs, he supervised the album and arranged the song lyrics. Music composers included, Erick Benzi, Jacques Veneruso, David Gategno, the first single Et sil nen restait quune, written by Françoise Dorin and David Gategno, was scheduled for release in Francophone countries on 14 February 2007. Dions official website posted information that Delles will be released in two editions, a double digipak and a collectors box set. The album was scheduled for release on 21 May 2007 in selected European countries and 22 May 2007 in Canada, Et sil nen restait quune premiered on 14 February 2007 and was sent to radio and released as a digital download on the same day. In a press release from 16 February 2007, celinedion. com announced that Dion is putting the finishing touches on Delles, also two new music composers were added to the list, Marc Dupré and Jean-François Breau. The first excerpt from the Et sil nen restait quune music video was posted on 28 March 2007, the Et sil nen restait quune CD single was issued on 13 April 2007 in Francophone countries. The cover art for the album, by Daniela Federici, was released on 19 April 2007, on 17 April 2007, the complete track listing for the album containing thirteen songs became available for TeamCeline members. Delles includes two versions of the song A cause, while the lyrics, written by Françoise Dorin, are the same on both versions, there are two different musical arrangements.
