Charles McCurdy Mathias Jr. was an American politician and attorney. A Republican, he served as a member of the United States Senate, representing Maryland from 1969 to 1987. He was also a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1959 to 1961, and of the United States House of Representatives, representing the 6th congressional district of Maryland from 1961 to 1969.

Mathias defeated incumbent Democrat Daniel Brewster, despite the Democratic Party's 3–1 advantage in registered voters.
Mathias frequently clashed ideologically with the Richard Nixon Administration.
Barbara Mikulski challenged Mathias for his seat in 1974.
Daniel Baugh Brewster Jr. was an American attorney and politician from the state of Maryland. A Democrat, Brewster represented Maryland in the U.S. Senate from 1963 to 1969. Previously, he served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1950 to 1958 and as a U.S. representative from the 2nd congressional district of Maryland from 1959 to 1963. After his Senate career, and following a lengthy court battle, Brewster pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of accepting an illegal gratuity.
