Indie rock is a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United States and the United Kingdom in the 1980s. Originally used to independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock. In the mid-1980s, the term began to be used to describe the music produced on punk and post-punk labels. Some prominent indie rock record labels were founded during the 1980s, during the 1990s, Grunge bands broke into the mainstream, and the term alternative lost its original counter-cultural meaning. The term indie rock became associated with the bands and genres that remained dedicated to their independent status, by the end of the 1990s indie rock developed subgenres and related styles including lo-fi, noise pop, emo, slowcore, post-rock and math rock. In the 2000s, changes in the industry and in music technology enabled a new wave of indie rock bands to achieve mainstream success. In the early 2000s, a new group of bands played a stripped-down. The commercial breakthrough from these scenes was led by four bands, The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Hives, emo also broke into mainstream culture in the early 2000s. By the end of the 2000s the proliferation of bands was being referred to as indie landfill. The term indie rock, which comes from independent, describes the small and relatively low-budget labels on which it is released, the influences and styles of the artists have been extremely diverse, including punk, psychedelia, post-punk and country. Allmusic identifies indie rock as including a number of varying musical approaches compatible with mainstream tastes, in fact, there is an everlasting list of genres and subgenres of indie rock. Many countries have developed a local indie scene, flourishing with bands with enough popularity to survive inside the respective country. However, there are still indie bands that start off locally, Indie rock has been identified as a reaction against the macho culture that developed in alternative rock in the aftermath of Nirvanas success. However, Cortney Harding pointed out that this sense of equality is not reflected in the number of women running indie labels. The BBC documentary Music for Misfits, The Story of Indie pinpoints the birth of indie as the 1977 self-publication of the Spiral Scratch EP by Manchester band Buzzcocks, Indie pop and indie were originally synonymous. In the mid-1980s, indie began to be used to describe the music produced on post-punk labels rather than the labels themselves. The indie rock scene in the US was prefigured by the rock that dominated college radio playlists. Alternative rock is a genre of rock music that emerged from the independent music underground of the 1980s and became widely popular in the 1990s and 2000s. In this instance, the word refers to the genres distinction from mainstream rock music. The terms original meaning was broader, referring to a generation of musicians unified by their debt to either the musical style or simply the independent. Ethos of punk rock, which in the late 1970s laid the groundwork for alternative music, Alternative rock is a broad umbrella term consisting of music that differs greatly in terms of its sound, its social context, and its regional roots. Most of these subgenres had achieved minor mainstream notice and a few bands representing them, such as Hüsker Dü, with the breakthrough of Nirvana and the popularity of the grunge and Britpop movements in the 1990s, alternative rock entered the musical mainstream and many alternative bands became successful. By the end of the decade, alternative rocks mainstream prominence declined due to a number of events that caused grunge and Britpop to fade, emo attracted attention in the larger alternative rock world, and the term was applied to a variety of artists, including multi-platinum acts. Post-punk revival artists such as Modest Mouse and The Killers had commercial success in the early, before the term alternative rock came into common usage around 1990, the sort of music to which it refers was known by a variety of terms. In 1979, Terry Tolkin used the term Alternative Music to describe the groups he was writing about, in 1979 Dallas radio station KZEW had a late night new wave show entitled Rock and Roll Alternative. College rock was used in the United States to describe the music during the 1980s due to its links to the radio circuit. In the United Kingdom, dozens of small do it yourself record labels emerged as a result of the punk subculture, according to the founder of one of these labels, Cherry Red, NME and Sounds magazines published charts based on small record stores called Alternative Charts. The first national chart based on distribution called the Indie Chart was published in January 1980, at the time, the term indie was used literally to describe independently distributed records. By 1985, indie had come to mean a particular genre, or group of subgenres, at first the term referred to intentionally non–mainstream rock acts that were not influenced by heavy metal ballads, rarefied new wave and high-energy dance anthems. The use of alternative gained further exposure due to the success of Lollapalooza, for which festival founder, in the late 1990s, the definition again became more specific. Defining music as alternative is often difficult because of two conflicting applications of the word, the name alternative rock essentially serves as an umbrella term for underground music that has emerged in the wake of punk rock since the mid-1980s. Alternative bands during the 1980s generally played in clubs, recorded for indie labels. Sounds range from the gloomy soundscapes of gothic rock to the guitars of indie pop to the dirty guitars of grunge to the 1960s/1970s revivalism of Britpop. This approach to lyrics developed as a reflection of the social and economic strains in the United States and United Kingdom of the 1980s, by 1984, a majority of groups signed to independent record labels mined from a variety of rock and particularly 1960s rock influences. This represented a break from the futuristic, hyper-rational post-punk years

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom or Britain, is a sovereign country in western Europe. It was the worlds first industrialised country and the worlds foremost power during the 19th, the UK remains a great power with considerable economic, cultural, military, scientific and political influence internationally. It is a nuclear weapons state and its military expenditure ranks fourth or fifth in the world. The UK has been a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council since its first session in 1946 and it has been a leading member state of the EU and its predecessor, the European Economic Community, since 1973. However, on 23 June 2016, a referendum on the UKs membership of the EU resulted in a decision to leave. Leeds /liːdz/ is a city in West Yorkshire, England. Historically in Yorkshires West Riding, the history of Leeds can be traced to the 5th century when the name referred to an area of the Kingdom of Elmet. The name has applied to many administrative entities over the centuries. It changed from being the appellation of a small borough in the 13th century, through several incarnations. In the 17th and 18th centuries Leeds became a centre for the production. During the Industrial Revolution, Leeds developed into a mill town, wool was the dominant industry but flax, engineering, iron foundries, printing. From being a market town in the valley of the River Aire in the 16th century Leeds expanded and absorbed the surrounding villages to become a populous urban centre by the mid-20th century. The city has the third largest jobs total by local authority area with 480,000 in employment and self-employment at the beginning of 2015. Leeds is also ranked as a world city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. Leeds is served by four universities, and has the fourth largest student population in the country and has the fourth largest urban economy. After London, Leeds is the largest legal and financial centre in the UK, with over 30 national and international banks located in the city. Leeds is also the UKs third largest manufacturing centre with around 1,800 firms and 39,000 employees, the largest sub-sectors are engineering, printing and publishing, food and drink, chemicals and medical technology. Outside of London, Leeds has the third busiest railway station, Public transport, rail and road communications networks in the region are focused on Leeds and there are a number of twinning arrangements with towns and cities in other countries. The name Leeds derives from the old Brythonic word Ladenses meaning people of the fast-flowing river and this name originally referred to the forested area covering most of the Brythonic kingdom of Elmet, which existed during the 5th century into the early 7th century. An inhabitant of Leeds is locally known as a Loiner, a word of uncertain origin, the term Leodensian is also used, from the citys Latin name. Leeds developed as a town in the Middle Ages as part of the local agricultural economy. Before the Industrial Revolution it became a centre for the manufacture of woollen cloth. Joy Division

Joy Division were an English rock band formed in 1976 in Salford, Greater Manchester. Originally named Warsaw, the band consisted of singer Ian Curtis, guitarist and keyboardist Bernard Sumner, bass player Peter Hook, and drummer Stephen Morris. Formed by Sumner and Hook after the two attended a Sex Pistols gig, Joy Division soon moved beyond their roots to develop a sound. The bands self-released 1978 debut EP, An Ideal for Living, drew the attention of the Manchester television personality Tony Wilson, Joy Divisions debut album Unknown Pleasures, recorded with producer Martin Hannett, was released in 1979 to critical acclaim. As the bands popularity grew, singer Curtis suffered from problems that included depression, a failing marriage. He found it difficult to perform live concerts, during which he sometimes suffered seizures. In May 1980, on the eve of the bands first American tour, Curtis committed suicide, the bands second and final album, Closer, was released two months later, the album and preceding single Love Will Tear Us Apart became the bands highest charting release. After Curtiss death, the members continued as New Order. Although their career spanned less than four years, Joy Division continues to exert an influence on a variety of subsequent artists, on 20 July 1976, childhood friends Sumner and Hook separately attended a Sex Pistols show at the Manchester Lesser Free Trade Hall. The following day Hook borrowed £35 from his mother to buy his first bass guitar, Sumner later said that he felt that the Pistols destroyed the myth of being a pop star, of a musician being some kind of god that you had to worship. Inspired by the performance, Sumner and Hook formed a band with their friend Terry Mason, Sumner bought a guitar, and Mason a drum kit. They invited schoolfriend Martin Gresty to join as vocalist, but he turned them down after getting a job at a local factory, an advertisement was placed in the Virgin Records shop in Manchester for a vocalist. Ian Curtis, who knew them from earlier gigs, responded and was hired without audition, Sumner said that he knew he was all right to get on with and thats what we based the whole group on. If we liked someone, they were in, Warsaw debuted on 29 May 1977 at the Electric Circus, supporting the Buzzcocks, Penetration and John Cooper Clarke. They received immediate national exposure due to reviews of the gig in the NME by Paul Morley, Tony Tabac played drums that night after joining the band two days earlier. Mason was soon made the manager and Tabac was replaced on drums in June 1977 by Steve Brotherdale. During his tenure with Warsaw, Brotherdale tried to get Curtis to leave the band and join Panik, in July 1977, Warsaw recorded a set of five demo tracks at Pennine Sound Studios, Oldham. Uneasy with Brotherdales aggressive personality, the band fired him soon after the demo sessions, driving home from the studio, they pulled over and asked Brotherdale to check on a flat tyre, when he got out of the car, they sped off

Transmission is a song by English post-punk band Joy Division. It was released in 1979 by record label Factory as the debut single. Transmission was released on 7 vinyl in October 1979 by record label Factory and it was re-released as a 12 single with a different sleeve in December 1980. The single charted twice in New Zealand, debuting at number 2 in September 1981, the song has been performed twice on television. One of them was on Tony Wilsons show and the other was on BBC, twenty seconds of the song is shown in the movie Control, directed by Anton Corbijn, a film based on the biography of Ians wife, Deborah, Curtiss Touching from a Distance. Greil Marcus has a chapter on this song in his book The History of Rock n Roll in Ten Songs, according to Marcus, Transmission is not an argument. Its a dramatization of the realization that the act of listening to the radio is a suicidal gesture, I realized that was our first great song. In May 2007, NME magazine placed Transmission at number 20 in its list of the 50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever, in 2016, Pitchfork placed Transmission at number 10 in its list of The 200 Best Songs of the 1970s. Transmission has been covered by, Low, Bauhaus, Innerpartysystem, The Weather Station, Girl in a Coma, BADBADNOTGOOD and it was played by The Smashing Pumpkins on their Adore Tour in 1998, with performances of the song usually lasting from 15 to 25 minutes. It was also covered by the cast of Control, a film about the life of Ian Curtis. In 2009 the song was covered by Russian post-punk group Последние танки в Париже as Радиоволна, song has been covered by Nomeansno. In music, a single or record single is a type of release, typically a song recording of fewer tracks than an LP record, an album or an EP record. This can be released for sale to the public in a variety of different formats, in most cases, a single is a song that is released separately from an album, although it usually also appears on an album. Typically, these are the songs from albums that are released separately for promotional uses such as digital download or commercial radio airplay and are expected to be the most popular, in other cases a recording released as a single may not appear on an album. As digital downloading and audio streaming have become prevalent, it is often possible for every track on an album to also be available separately. Nevertheless, the concept of a single for an album has been retained as an identification of a heavily promoted or more popular song within an album collection. Despite being referred to as a single, singles can include up to as many as three tracks on them. The biggest digital music distributor, iTunes, accepts as many as three tracks less than ten minutes each as a single, as well as popular music player Spotify also following in this trend. Any more than three tracks on a release or longer than thirty minutes in total running time is either an Extended Play or if over six tracks long. The basic specifications of the single were made in the late 19th century. Gramophone discs were manufactured with a range of speeds and in several sizes. By about 1910, however, the 10-inch,78 rpm shellac disc had become the most commonly used format, the inherent technical limitations of the gramophone disc defined the standard format for commercial recordings in the early 20th century.26 rpm. The Pigeon Detectives

The Pigeon Detectives are an English indie rock band from Rothwell in Leeds, West Yorkshire, who formed in 2004. They performed at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in 2006, where they were tagged the band most likely to leap to the stage in 2007 in an NME review. The band returned to the festivals in 2007 and again performed on the NME stage, speaking about the bands name, the drummer Jimmi Naylor said, I never liked the name at first. But its stuck– and its probably got us more attention having a silly name, the band were just discussing band names and he came up with The Pigeon Detectives. It became an in-joke but we thought nothing of it, but when it came to our first gig in Leeds the promoter was saying, Whats your name. When asked by BBC Sound about the name, Naylor said, Dave breeds pigeons, and theres a pigeon that lives in a shed, thats his special pigeon, according to Bowmans Twitter, the band is in fact named after a 1970s French cartoon. The band have appeared on the football based entertainment show Soccer AM on four occasions, on the 2007 Christmas Day special, they became the first band to play in the Soccer AM studio, playing the singles I Found Out and Im Not Sorry. During the same episode, Bowman announced that he had suffered a heel bone. The Pigeon Detectives are signed to the independent label Dance To The Radio with whom their first album, Wait for Me, was released on CD,12 heavyweight vinyl and digital download on 28 May 2007. The album, recorded in autumn 2006, was produced by Will Jackson and was recorded in the home town of Leeds. An early version of the album was leaked to underground music download sites on the internet on 11 April 2007, the album entered the UK Top 40 chart at number 3, achieving Gold status soon after release. During September 2007, the played at JerseyLive, a weekend event held in Jersey, one of the Channel Islands. In September 2007 it was announced that the Pigeon Detectives had been nominated for Best New Act at the Q Awards, but they lost out to The Enemy. The band supported Kaiser Chiefs on three of their November/December UK tour dates, including 1 December 2007 at the Manchester Evening News Arena and 15 December 2007 at Earls Court in London. A cover of the Huey Lewis and the News track The Power of Love appears on the Radio 1 Established 1967 compilation CD, in July 2008, the single I Found Out was featured in the film Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging. In January 2008, they recorded their album, titled Emergency, with producer Stephen Street in Monnow Valley Studios in Monmouth. The album was released on 26 May 2008, entering the UK album charts at number 5, the lead single, This Is an Emergency, peaked at number 14, their second-highest charting single. New Musical Express is a British music journalism magazine published since 1952. It was the first British paper to include a singles chart, in the 1970s it became the best-selling British music newspaper. It started as a newspaper, and gradually moved toward a magazine format during the 1980s and 1990s. An online version of NME, NME. com, was launched in 1996 and it became the worlds biggest standalone music site, with over seven million users per month. With newsstand sales falling across the UK magazine sector, the paid circulation in the first half of 2014 was 15,830. In 2013, the list of NMEs The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, NME magazine was relaunched in September 2015 as a nationally distributed free publication. NMEs headquarters are in Southwark, London, England, the brands editor-in-chief is Mike Williams, who replaced Krissi Murison in 2012. The paper was established in 1952, the Accordion Times and Musical Express was bought by London music promoter Maurice Kinn, for the sum of £1,000, just 15 minutes before it was due to be officially closed. It was relaunched as the New Musical Express, and was published in a non-glossy tabloid format on standard newsprint. On 14 November 1952, taking its cue from the US magazine Billboard, it created the first UK Singles Chart, the first of these was, in contrast to more recent charts, a top twelve sourced by the magazine itself from sales in regional stores around the UK. The first number one was Here in My Heart by Al Martino, during the 1960s the paper championed the new British groups emerging at the time. The NME circulation peaked under Andy Gray, Editor 1957–1972, with a figure of 306,881 for the period from January to June 1964, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones were frequently featured on the front cover. These and other artists appeared at the NME Poll Winners Concert. The concert also featured a ceremony where the winners would collect their awards. The NME Poll Winners Concerts took place between 1959 and 1972, from 1964 onwards they were filmed, edited and transmitted on British television a few weeks after they had taken place. The latter part of the 1960s saw the chart the rise of psychedelia. During this period some sections of pop music began to be designated as rock, in early 1972 the paper found itself on the verge of closure by its owner IPC. Alan Smith was made editor and in 1972 was told by IPC to turn things around quickly or face closure, according to The Economist, the New Musical Express started to champion underground, up-and-coming music. DIY ethic
–
DIY ethic refers to the ethic of self-sufficiency through completing tasks without the aid of a paid expert. Literally meaning do it yourself, the DIY ethic promotes the idea that anyone is capable of performing a variety of rather than relying on paid specialists. The DIY ethic requires that the adherent seeks out the required to complete a given task. The term can refer to a variety of disciplines, including home improvement, rather than belittling or showing disdain for those who engage in manual labor or skilled crafts, DIY champions the average individual seeking such knowledge and expertise. In the punk subculture, the DIY ethic is tied to punk ideology and it espouses the rejection of consumer culture, using existing systems or existing processes that would foster dependence on established societal structures. According to the aesthetic, one can express oneself and produce moving. Arguably the earliest example of this attitude was the music scene of the 1970s. Since many venues tend to shy away from experimental music, houses. Riot Grrrl, associated with feminism, also adopted the core values of the DIY punk ethic by leveraging creative ways of communication through zines. Adherents of the DIY punk ethic can also work collectively, for example, punk impresario David Fergusons CD Presents was a DIY concert production, recording studio, and record label network. The German punk band Mono für Alle, perfected the mass production of the self-made DIY album. Their album included a wooden cover and sold over 6000 units from their website. The DIY punk ethic also applies to simple living, such as. Sewing, repairing, or modifying clothing rather than buying new clothes, reclaiming recyclable products by dumpster diving. Some educators also engage in DIY teaching techniques, sometimes referred to as Edupunk, DIY music has its origins in the mid 1970s punk rock scene. It developed as a way to circumnavigate the mainstream music industry, in 2014, speaking about the 80s and 90s, Steve Albini told of the difficulties of getting record and played on the radio, saying So these independent bands had to be resourceful. They’d built their own infrastructure of independent clubs, promoters, fanzines, DIY music bands do everything themselves or with independent collaborators, from album production to marketing and communication. This choice primarily reflects a need to emphasize its independence in relation to big record labels, advances in technology and lowering costs have progressively made it easier for bands to be independent

Wait for Me (The Pigeon Detectives)

Wait for Me is the platinum-selling debut album of Leeds band The Pigeon Detectives. The album was released for CD,12 and digital download on 28 May 2007, the album sold around 227,000 copies in 2007, reaching #70 in the end of year chart. It was certified platinum in June 2008, upon the albums release, it received generally positive reviews from most critics. The album was recorded at Soundworks Studios in Leeds over a long time span in the second half of 2006. In between recording the album the band toured vigorously, touring with the likes of The Holloways, the first release from the album sessions was I Found Out which came out in November 2006 giving the band their first top 40 hit. Following on from the success of I Found Out, the song Romantic Type was chosen as the next single, on 2 January 2007 the song was given its first airing on BBC Radio One only 2 hours after the final master was finished. Romantic Type hit number #19 in the charts on 4 March 2007, later that month the band finished mixing the final album with Stephen Harris and Cenzo Townsend. After a second top 20 hit with Im Not Sorry hitting number #12, the Pigeon Detectives released 2 more singles from the album, Take Her Back reached number 20 in August 2007 and a re-recorded version of I Found Out, released on 12 November. Emergency is the second album by Leeds band, The Pigeon Detectives. The album was released on 26 May 2008, just under a year after their platinum selling album. The album was produced by Stephen Street who has produced for such as Blur, Babyshambles, The Smiths. The first single from the album was This Is an Emergency on 12 May 2008, the album was subject to an early leak onto the internet on 1 May, and spread via P2P networks. Unlike many early album leaks, the files that were distributed on the internet were of a high quality. The album peaked at five in its first week but fell out the charts quickly. Sky Larkin is an English indie rock band from Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, who formed in 2005. In common with bands from Leeds, Sky Larkin released two singles on the Leeds-based label Dance To The Radio. During this time they would play around the UK on bills with the likes of Los Campesinos, nosferatu D2, Johnny Foreigner, Wild Beasts and others. In 2008 they released the Swit Swoo EP digitally as a covers collection, the band signed to record label Wichita in 2008, and released their debut single on this new label, titled Fossil, I, on 20 October 2008. There was a video for the single which enjoyed success on MTV2. Their debut album The Golden Spike was released in February 2009 on Wichita Records, a promotional tour of England, Europe and America took place in spring/summer 2009, and in December 2009 they toured in support of The Cribs. In 2010, the band recorded follow up to their debut and released Kaleide in August, in September 2010, the band headed out on a UK tour. Later that year the band supported Blood Red Shoes, Les Savy Fav, following the end of the album cycle, Harkin joined the Wild Beasts providing keyboards, drums and backing vocals on a worldwide tour. On 25 January 2012, five years to the day after the released their first single. When Harkin returned from tour, Sky Larkin expanded into a four-piece, with These Monsters Sam Pryor replacing Adams on bass, in May 2013, the band released a single, Motto, and embarked on a tour supporting Dutch Uncles and Marnie Stern. Their third album Motto was released 16 September 2013 and a video for Newsworthy followed, following the release of Motto, Nile Marr and Sam Pryor left the band and Michael Matthews joined on bass. An extended play is a musical recording that contains more tracks than a single, but is usually unqualified as an album or LP. EPs generally do not contain as many tracks as albums, and are considered less expensive, an EP originally referred to specific types of vinyl records other than 78 rpm standard play and LP, but it is now applied to mid-length CDs and downloads as well. Ricardo Baca of The Denver Post said, EPs—originally extended-play single releases that are shorter than traditional albums—have long been popular with punk, in the United Kingdom, the Official Chart Company defines a boundary between EP and album classification at 25 minutes of length or four tracks. EPs were released in various sizes in different eras, the earliest multi-track records, issued around 1919 by Grey Gull Records, were vertically cut 78 rpm discs known as 2-in-1 records. These had finer than usual grooves, like Edison Disc Records, by 1949, when the 45 rpm single and 33 1⁄3 rpm LP were competing formats, seven-inch 45 rpm singles had a maximum playing time of only about four minutes per side. Partly as an attempt to compete with the LP introduced in 1948 by rival Columbia, RCA Victor introduced Extended Play 45s during 1952. Their narrower grooves, achieved by lowering the levels and sound compression optionally. These were usually 10-inch LPs split onto two seven-inch EPs or 12-inch LPs split onto three seven-inch EPs, either separately or together in gatefold covers. This practice became less common with the advent of triple-speed-available phonographs. Some classical music albums released at the beginning of the LP era were distributed as EP albums—notably the seven operas that Arturo Toscanini conducted on radio between 1944 and 1954. These opera EPs, originally broadcast on the NBC Radio network and manufactured by RCA, in the 1990s, they began appearing on compact discs. During the 1950s, RCA published several EP albums of Walt Disney movies and these usually featured the original casts of actors and actresses. Each album contained two seven-inch records, plus an illustrated booklet containing the text of the recording, so that children could follow along by reading. Some of the titles included Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and what was then a recent release, because of the popularity of 7 and other formats, SP records became less popular and the production of SPs in Japan was suspended in 1963. In the 1950s and 1960s, EPs were usually compilations of singles or album samplers and were played at 45 rpm on seven-inch discs. Record Retailer printed the first EP chart in 1960, the New Musical Express, Melody Maker, Disc and Music Echo and the Record Mirror continued to list EPs on their respective singles charts. The Beatles Twist and Shout outsold most singles for some weeks in 1963, when the BBC and Record Retailer commissioned the British Market Research Bureau to compile a chart it was restricted to singles and EPs disappeared from the listings. In the Philippines, seven-inch EPs marketed as mini-LPs were introduced in 1970, with tracks selected from an album and this mini-LP format also became popular in America in the early 1970s for promotional releases, and also for use in jukeboxes

Pulled Apart by Horses are an indie rock and alternative rock band from Leeds, England. In 2009 they were signed by Transgressive Records and released their debut self-titled album Pulled Apart by Horses on 21 June 2010. After Tough Love, the sold out their first European tour. In 2010 they supported Muse at the Manchester County Cricket Ground, in September 2014 the bands 3rd album Blood became their first top 40, entering the charts at 38. In 2016, Pulled Apart by Horses recorded a take over for Annie Mac, the bands 4th album, The Haze will be release in 2017. Pulled Apart By Horses formed after Lee Vincent was contacted by James Brown over a music forum and he was looking to start a The Jesus Lizard style band in Leeds. They went on to rehearse as a three piece with Robert Lee being invited to play Bass at a studio on the outskirts of Leeds city centre. It is believed no material was recorded as the performing as a 3-piece. The band then began touring in 2008 and soon received attention from the press and media due to their live performances. They also began to be known for their very frantic live performances during which members have been known to be injured. Meat Balloon -2008 The bands debut single, Meat Balloon, was released via Big Scary Monsters Recording Company in October 2008 and it debuted at No.18 on the UK Indie Singles chart. The limited edition 7 single came with a free CD and comic, created by the bands singer, Tom Hudson. I Punched A Lion In The Throat -2009 In January 2009 PABH released their single I Punched A Lion In The Throat on Too Pure/Beggars on 7 vinyl, the song was also made available as a free download on the bands official website. Tour Traxx EP -2009 Once the band became busy with frequent touring in the UK & Europe they self-released a 5 track CD which was available at shows whilst they were securing a record deal. Live at Leeds -2010 On 21 March, Transgressive Records announced the release of a strictly limited 12 vinyl release titled Live At Leeds to be released on Record Store Day in the UK. The record would appear to borrow the idea from The Who classic album with artwork, the Live at Leeds album is available to download from the bands official website. Pulled Apart By Horses -2010 Their eponymous debut album was released on 21 June 2010, and they also toured with post-hardcore band Biffy Clyro. Das Racist was an American alternative hip hop group based in Brooklyn, New York City, composed of MCs Heems and Kool A. D. and hype man Ashok Kondabolu. Known for their use of humor, academic references, foreign allusions, Spin picked Das Racist as one of fifty acts to watch at the 2010 SXSW festival, and in April 2010, MTV Iggy selected Das Racist as one of the 25 Best New Bands in the World. Rolling Stone declared the song hahahaha jk. from Sit Down, Spin also featured Das Racist on the cover of its November 2011 issue with an article written by Daps brother, comedian Hari Kondabolu. On November 28,2011, the made their United States television debut on Conan. At the PULS Festival, formerly known as on3-Festival, in December 2012 in Munich, Heems revealed Das Racist is breaking up and were not a band anymore. The next day, Kool A. D. revealed that he had left the band in October 2012, though his reasons for doing so and the status of recorded materials for the groups second album remain unknown. Suri and Vazquez met in 2003 at Wesleyan University in Middletown, however, they formed Das Racist only after both had moved to New York following their graduation from college. Kondabolu, who had met Suri when they were students at New Yorks Stuyvesant High School, soon joined as their hype man. Suri and Kondabolu are both from Queens, New York and of Indian descent, and Vazquez is of Afro-Cuban and Italian descent, Vazquez is also a member of power-pop band Boy Crisis. Himanshu Suri stated in an interview, Das Racist first began attracting attention with their song Combination Pizza Hut, in November 2008, The Guardian called Das Racist a funny and funky duo, placing them on a list of eight bands worth checking out. In March 2009, Baltimore-based electronic musician Dan Deacon referred to Combination Pizza Hut, death & Taxes magazine described the song as an existential meditation on consumer identity in corporate America and both feverishly juvenile and somehow profound. Das Racists first album, the Shut Up, Dude mixtape, was released as a download in March 2010. The mixtape received positive reviews, earning a score of 7, Pitchfork named the video one of the forty best of 2010, and it was selected to screen at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Six months later, Das Racist released their second mixtape Sit Down, Man on September 14,2010, also as a free download. Sit Down, Man received even better reviews, earning a score of 8 from Spin magazine, as well as an 8.7 and Best New Music from Pitchfork Media, and was downloaded over 40,000 times in the first week. Guests on Sit Down, Man include El-P, Despot, Vijay Iyer and their first commercially released album, titled Relax, was released on September 13,2011, on Suris own Greedhead Music label. The album includes production from Diplo, El-P, Rostam Batmanglij, and Anand Wilder, as well as guest appearances from El-P, Danny Brown, Bikram Singh, and Despot. Artrocker magazine is an independent monthly publication, concentrating on music and modern culture, available across the United Kingdom. Before switching to a format in 2013, it was stocked in larger branches of newsagents. The magazine started life as an email newsletter before evolving into a printed magazine. Issue one featured KaitO on the cover and was released on October 4,2004, the publication appeared on a bi-weekly basis until November 2007, when the magazine began publication on a monthly basis. Launching its first digital edition in 2010, Artrocker slowly phased out the print issue, Artrocker provides an outlook on modern culture, with information on the UK music scene and the main emphasis firmly being placed on London. There are also dedicated to covering art and fashion. Due to the demise of Melody Maker and Sounds, the magazine was considered one of the few rivals to the NME. In 2008, the magazine claimed a figure of 30,369, under current editor-in-chief Tom Fawcett. Today, the circulation of NME sits at 15,384, there is a certain rivalry evident between Artrocker and the NME, with Artrocker writers and readers apparently referring to the NME as the Comic and accusing them of jumping on any old bandwagon. Cooking Vinyl is a UK-based independent record company, founded in 1986 by former manager and booking agent Martin Goldschmidt and business partner Pete Lawrence. Goldschmidt remains the current owner and managing director, the company is based in Acton, London. Established in 1986, Cooking Vinyl has developed a reputation as one of Europes most innovative independent labels, key to the companys longevity is its emphasis on artist-driven deals with its pioneering introduction of bespoke services-only contracts that claim no stake in artists copyrights. The first such deal drawn up in 1993 with Billy Bragg who has since re-signed to the label a total of seven times, as for recent years,2015 and 2016 were remarkable for the label, described by Uncut magazine “a template for modern independent record companies”. After topping the charts in 2015 with The Prodigy’s “The Day is My Enemy”, both records qualified for a silver disc in the UK. This same year, Richard Ashcroft reached the UK top 3 with “These People”, in these years, Cooking Vinyl Australia notched up a number 1 album with Parkway Drive, and top 5 entries with City and Colour and Kate Miller-Heidke. In 1986 Cooking Vinyl famously recorded a live performance around a campfire at a folk festival by the singer Michelle Shocked. One of its first releases, Cooking Vinyl released the recording as The Campfire Tapes, as well as its more traditional royalty agreements, Cooking Vinyl is widely regarded as a pioneer of ‘artist services’ deals where the artist retains ownership of the copyrights. The company’s first such deal came in 1993 with a reissue of Billy Braggs Back To Basics compilation, since then, Bragg has re-signed to Cooking Vinyl a total of six times, most recently in 2013 for the release of studio album Tooth And Nail. Cooking Vinyl has consistently been in the forefront of the digital revolution and it was the first European label to do a deal with the MP3 download site eMusic and the first to enter negotiations with the peer to peer file-sharing company Kazaa. In 2005 Cooking Vinyl set up its own distribution company, Uploader. Who were in turn bought by The Orchard, Cooking Vinyl has had international success from the start with Michelle Shocked The Texas Campfire Tapes selling 250,000 worldwide. Other notable releases include the Cowboy Junkies Trinity Sessions and Ryan Adams debut solo studio album Heartbreaker in 2000, the album was funded through a high-profile Kickstarter campaign that raised over $1.2 million in 30 days. Another notable campaign from that year was the release of Marilyn Manson’s Born Villain under a partnership between Mansons own label Hell, etc. and Cooking Vinyl. The album was a success charting at #5 in Germany, #10 in the US. Across the rest of Europe the album peaked at #4 in Austria, #6 in France, in the UK Manson reached #14 in the Official Albums Chart and #1 in the UK Rock Albums Chart. Cooking Vinyl is noted for its long relationships with many of its artists, the Pixies Charles Thompson was signed in 2000 and has had 17 releases to date with the label as Frank Black and Black Francis. The Orchard is an American music and entertainment company founded in 1997 by Richard Gottehrer and Scott Cohen, wholly owned by Sony Music Entertainment and based in New York City. It specializes in distribution, marketing, and sales and collaborates with independent artists, labels. In this context, The Orchard has been criticized by YouTube users for claiming content that is not theirs or in some cases, content that did not exist within the video at all. In a blog post on The Daily Rind, The Orchard explains that this is due to YouTubes automated Content ID matching and it also appears that The Orchard is claiming copyright ownership rights against videos of artists under one of the participatory label. The Reading and Leeds Festivals are a pair of annual rock music festivals that take place in Reading and Leeds in England. The events take place simultaneously on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the August bank holiday weekend, the Reading Festival is held at Little Johns Farm on Richfield Avenue in central Reading, near the Caversham Bridge. The Leeds event is held in Bramham Park, near Wetherby, campsites are available at both sites and weekend tickets include camping. It has had various musical phases over the years, as detailed below, in the twin-site era, rock, alternative, indie, punk and metal have tended to dominate. The festivals are run by Festival Republic, which was divested from Mean Fiddler Music Group, for promotional purposes during 1998–2007 they were known as the Carling Weekend, Reading and the Carling Weekend, Leeds. These titles were used when not required, although NME were contractually obliged to do so as part of their involvement. In November 2007, the organisers welcomed Reading Festival reclaiming its prestigious name when the title was abolished after 9 years. In 2011, the capacity of the Reading site was 87,000 and this was an increase of several thousand on previous years. The festival typically has the following stages, Main stage – major rock, indie, metal, nME/Radio 1 stage – less well-known acts, building up to an alternative headline act. Dance tent – dance music acts, previously sharing a day with the Lock Up stage, Lock Up Stage – underground punk and hardcore acts. Due to demand, from 2006 this stage took up two days rather than previous years where it was one day. Festival Republic stage – acts with less popular appeal and breakthrough acts, 1Xtra Stage – new stage for 2013 that stages Hip-Hop, RnB and Rap artists. Alternative tent – comedy and cabaret acts plus DJs, BBC Introducing Stage – Typically unsigned/not well known acts. The Reading Festival officially began life as the National Jazz Festival, however, the festivals roots can be traced further back to the Beaulieu Jazz Festivals of the 1950s held on the estate of Lord Montague at Beaulieu in the New Forest, Hampshire. When alcochol-fuelled violence at the start of the 1960s led to the cancellation of the Beaulieu Jazz Festival its mantle was inherited by the new National Jazz Festival and this format continued until 1967 when jazz was relegated to just the Saturday afternoon session and by 1969 had disappeared entirely. 1964 saw a Friday evening session added to the existing weekend format, the following year a second stage was added, but this innovation was not to last and by the time the Festival was relocated to Sunbury in 1968 the single-stage format returned. Plumpton Racecourse then hosted the Festival for a stint from 1969. In 1984, many acts were booked to appear, tickets were on sale with Marillion due to be one of this years headliners

BBC Introducing is the brand for new music programmes across the BBC radio stations, showcasing unsigned, self-signed and other emerging musical talent primarily from the UK. Launched in 2007 the Introducing brand brings programming from across the BBC under a brand with each show retaining its own identity. Introducing has also extended to the BBCs stages at major festivals such as Glastonbury. Introducing shows can now be found on most BBC Radio stations from national to local, in 2010 BBC Introducing was awarded the best new platform to discover music at the BT Digital Music Awards. In May 2011, BBC Introducing won the Gold award for Best Use of Multiplatform at the Sony Radio Academy Awards, since 5 January 2013, every BBC Local Radio station across England and the Channel Islands broadcasts a BBC Introducing programme at 8pm on Saturday evenings. The initial idea was to introduce a BBC new music discovery proposition consistent across all local, BBC Introducing was created and selected as the brand name by Jason Carter, the former Head Of Live Music at Radio 1, he continues to lead the proposition for the BBC. The creation followed research via a pan BBC music steering group and it was developed as a property that could be added to existing show names, or used as a signpost for features within programming. BBC Introducing was launched in 2007, and by this period many BBC local radio stations had launched a local music show to share. In September 2010 all BBC local radio shows that had not renamed themselves as part of the Introducing were re-branded, BBC Introducing has hosted a stage at Glastonbury Festival every year since 2007. The 2011 incarnation featured Ed Sheeran, F-Block, the Good Natured, Sharks Took the Rest, Vessels and Shammi Pithia, BBC Introducing has also hosted stages at the Reading and Leeds festivals since 2008, Radio 1s Big Weekend since 2008 and T in the Park since 2009. With most BBC Local Radio stations now featuring an Introducing show, in essence the national station has access to local experts across the country who are able to act as a filter and recommend artists for national attention. For big events, such as the BBC Introducing stage at the Glastonbury festival, local show producers submit acts for consideration to a central panel. During February 2009, a tool was launched on the BBC Introducing website to allow users to upload their music direct to BBC Introducing producers and presenters. The upload tool was the subject of a complaint to the BBC Trust from a commercial organisation Amazing Tunes that had launched a service in 2005. Amazing Tunes provides the content for a UK national digital radio station. The complaint described the BBC upload mechanism as to all intents, the BBC disputed this description, but advised artists to explore all the avenues open to them. They released their first single, Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants, on Bad Sneakers Records in November 2006 and they have released five acclaimed albums, Limbo, Panto in 2008, Two Dancers in 2009, Smother in 2011, Present Tense in 2014 and Boy King in 2016. Two Dancers was nominated for the Mercury Prize, in 2002, Queen Katherine School students Hayden Thorpe and Ben Little formed the duo Fauve, the French term for wild beast, and began writing songs. In January 2004, drummer Chris Bert Talbot and bassist Gareth Gaz Bullock, joined, the quartet recorded their eponymous demo EP in June 2004. In September 2005, the relocated to Leeds and Tom Fleming replaced Bullock full-time bassist. They played their first Leeds gig at Trash, the new quartet recorded two further demo EPs, Esprit De Corps and All Men. Wild Beasts signed to Bad Sneakers Records in August 2006 and they recorded a live session of three tracks in November 2006 for Marc Rileys Brain Surgery on BBC Radio 6 Music. Bad Sneakers released Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants on 20 November, with Haydens enormous falsetto voice, which soars over chiming guitars, the single was placed at number 17 in the UK indie chart. In February 2007, Wild Beasts signed to Domino Records, a second single was released on Bad Sneakers Records in April 2007, Through Dark Night. In May 2007, music magazine NME listed Wild Beasts as one of ten bands tipped for the top. Wild Beasts debut album Limbo, Panto, described as shocking, funny, the bands second album Two Dancers was released in August 2009 and was widely acclaimed, it featured in many end of year best albums lists for 2009. It was nominated for the 2010 Mercury Prize, Wild Beasts third studio album, entitled Smother, was released in May 2011. Blood Red Shoes are an alternative rock duo from Brighton, England consisting of Laura-Mary Carter and Steven Ansell. They have released four albums, Box of Secrets, Fire Like This, In Time to Voices, and Blood Red Shoes as well as several EPs. In 2014, they founded their own label, Jazz Life, Blood Red Shoes formed in late 2004, after Steven Ansell and Laura-Mary Carters previous bands broke up and they decided to have a jam. The summer of 2007 saw the band playing several festival spots, including T in the Park, the inaugural Underage Festival, and the Electric Gardens festival. They also supported a range of bands, such as Biffy Clyro, Maxïmo Park, Panic. at the Disco, Lightning Bolt, The Gossip, Siouxsie Sioux. Following the sale of V2 to Universal Music Group, the bands début album Box of Secrets was released on Mercury Records on 14 April 2008 and it was leaked to private torrent trackers in November 2007, several months before its retail release date. Laura-Mary Carter from the band has designed the sleeve for every release by the band. They played a tour of the UK, in support of the album, followed by dates across mainland Europe. They played major festivals including Reading and Leeds, Summer Sonic, Pukkelpop, Lowlands. After their autumn-winter tour of 2008, which covered over 12 countries and they began touring again in March 2009, introducing new songs at every gig, sometimes including unfinished songs or those without lyrics. They opened for Foals in Brighton in 2009 to road-test some new material by playing all new songs except for Its Getting Boring by the Sea, on 17 May 2009, the band played All Tomorrows Parties, having been invited to play by The Breeders. The band recorded their album with Mike Crossey at the Motor Museum studio in Liverpool. They also contributed a track called Carry Knots on a compilation CD for Audioscope, in aid of the homeless charity Shelter. On 25 November 2009, the made a new track, Colours Fade. Independent music webzine The Music Magazine commented that the sound had been boosted. Author Jamie Smith wrote, It takes the tried and tested BRS formula and as they say, the albums first single Light It Up premiered on 5 January 2010 on Radio 1 by Huw Stephens filling in for Zane Lowe. The single was released on 22 February, one week before the release of their second album Fire Like This on 1 March 2010, further singles Dont Ask and Heartsink were released in May and August respectively, which was followed by a European and North American tour in October. Bear in Heaven is a Brooklyn-based indie rock band formed by Jon Philpot in 2003. The sound of the band incorporates influences from music, electronic music. Philpot has previously released music as part of the duo Presocratics, in collaboration with guitarist, Presocratics released an album in 2000 and an EP in 2001, both were produced by Philpot and issued by the record label Table of the Elements. The first Bear in Heaven release, Tunes Nextdoor to Songs, was released on July 13,2004 by Eastern Developments and it was an EP of solo recordings by Philpot, with guest musicians performing on various instruments. Shortly after its release, Philpot assembled a lineup including Sadek Bazarra on keyboards and guitar, David Daniell on guitar, James Elliott on bass. Drummer Joe Stickney was then added to the lineup, Daniell left in 2005 to focus on his solo project. In 2006, Bear in Heaven participated in a Take Away Shows video session shot by Vincent Moon, Red Bloom of the Boom, Bear in Heavens first full-length album with the full band, was released November 6,2007 on their own Hometapes record label. Elliott left the band after the completion of the Red Bloom recordings to focus on School of Seven Bells and his solo project, Ateleia. Bear in Heaven began performing live as a quartet with Philpot on vocals, guitar and keyboards, Wills on guitar and bass, Bazarra on bass and keyboards, and Stickney on drums. Their second album, Beast Rest Forth Mouth, was released by Hometapes on October 13,2009, Beast Rest Forth Mouth received the Best New Music award from Pitchfork Media, with the reviewer stating, Beast Rest Forth Mouth is as familiar-feeling as it is difficult to pinpoint. Mostly made up of textural, spacious three- to four-minute pop anthems with towering choruses, BRFM is a reminder that an album doesnt have to be bombastic to feel huge. Take out the earbuds and let it fill a space, This is music thats bigger than your iPod—music youll want to all around you. Though not quite coming out of nowhere, BRFM seems like a surprise gift—a striking consolidation of the spiky psych-prog tendencies of their debut into a pop framework. On August 23,2010, the band issued an album of remixes, Beast Rest Forth Mouth Remixed, Bazarra left the band after a March 2011 tour. On April 16, they released Lovesick, a split 12 vinyl single on Hometapes in collaboration with Lindstrøm, the album was released by Dead Oceans/Hometapes on April 3,2012. As a band whose sound has remained impossible to trace to a single touchstone, their only consistency is a love of sonic density and Philpots thick, dulcet vocals. The band consists of Robert Howie Milton, Rob Paul Roberts White, Joss Van Wilder, Lawrence Trev Cole and Daniel Harvey. The band are well known for their sense of humor. Robert Milton, Joss Van Wilder and Lawrence Trev Cole met at the West Bridgford School, Rob and Joss first played together aged 13 in a band they named Oh Henry. They first played as Dog is Dead, together with Trev, at the school concert Bridgstock and they have also given an alternative explanation that the name came from Shakespeares Richard III. Trev brought in one of his old friends from Primary School, Lawrence Libor, Trev also brought in guitarist Rob White, whom he attended a drama club with. Rob White goes by the name Paul Roberts to avoid having two people called Rob in the band, the band initially played gigs at friends parties and at schools. The band started securing gigs in Nottingham in late 2007, in 2008 they started performing live at many venues in Nottingham, including the Bodega Social Club, Junction 7 and at the citys Splendour festival. In 2009 the band supported acts including One Night Only and Cajun Dance Party, in April, they released their debut promotional EP under their own label Your Childhood Records. And performed at Splendour in Nottingham and Dot to Dot Festival, in 2010 they supported more acts, including OK Go. They returned to the Dot to Dot Festival, and appeared at Glastonbury on the BBC Introducing stage, in June they released their first single Glockenspiel Song under their own label. This version was recorded at Nottinghams Random Recording Studios. and followed later in the year by Young, both singles received airplay on BBC national Radio 1 and Radio 6 Music. In 2011, DHP Group, the owners of Nottinghams Rock City venue, in March they appeared as themselves on the British TV teen drama Skins after the scriptwriter saw them at Glastonbury. The closing scene of the series featured the band in a marquee playing Glockenspiel Song, with most of the series characters joining in the songs chant. We are failures and we love it, the episode, first broadcast on channel E4 in March 2011, also included Young as background music during the wedding scene. Shortly after, they were signed by Atlantic Records who released a collection of their previously available songs on the Your Childhood EP and this was followed by two new singles, River Jordan and Hands Down. During 2011 Lawrence Libor decided to leave the band to pursue a career in theatre and he was replaced on drums by Daniel Harvey. The band continued to tour extensively, both as an act and as support for Bombay Bicycle Club and Viva Brother. They performed at several UK festivals, Paris and Amsterdam and their third Atlantic Records release, Two Devils, was accompanied by a much darker video matching the title

Dutch Uncles are an English indie pop band from Marple. They are known for their use of time signatures within a pop context. Their influences include Kate Bush, King Crimson, Steve Reich, XTC, originally from Marple, the band started playing together in college. They became Dutch Uncles in April 2008, and in early 2009 released their debut album in Germany with Tapete Records. The band returned in 2010 with their UK debut single The Ink, soon after, they signed to London label Memphis Industries and released the single Fragrant on 1 November 2010. The bands second album entitled Cadenza was released on 25 April 2011 and their third album, Out of Touch In The Wild, was released on 14 January 2013. The following summer the band supported American rock band Paramore on their European tour, Paramore guitarist Taylor York cited Dutch Uncles as an inspiration for their 2013 album. The band released their album, O Shudder, on 23 February 2015. They played their biggest headline shows to date at the Koko in London, in autumn 2015, the band supported Garbage on the European leg of their 20 Years Queer anniversary tour. Hookworms are a five-piece psychedelic/noise rock band from Leeds/Halifax, England. Hookworms released their first tape cassette EP on Sun Araws Sun Ark/Magic Lantern label in August 2011 and they are known in underground alternative music circles for their live shows. They have released live recordings and several other releases through Gringo Records, in 2013 Hookworms signed with the Domino imprint Weird World, they also joined the Too Pure roster with their single Radio Tokyo. Broken Records are a band from Edinburgh, Scotland, which formed in December 2006. The band are signed to 4AD and released their album, Until the Earth Begins to Part. Their second album Let Me Come Home was released in October 2010, the band was originally a three-piece comprising Jamie Sutherland, brother Rory Sutherland, and Ian Turnbull. After a few performances they added Arne Kolb, Dave Smith, Andrew Keeney, broken Records played 60 gigs in 2007 and recorded a session for BBC Radio 1 at the Maida Vale studios. The album has been described by frontman Jamie Sutherland as based around all the things men do. Broken Records released a digital EP, entitled Out on the Water, the release contains songs recorded before Until the Earth Begins to Part. The band covered The Beatles song Oh, darling for Mojo Magazines Abbey Road Now. A free cover-mounted CD given away with the October 2009 issue of the magazine, in August 2010, 4AD announced the release of the bands second album, entitled Let Me Come Home, released on 25 October 2010. The album was produced by Tony Doogan, and features artwork by renowned graphic artist Vaughan Oliver, use of the violin, cello, and accordion gives them a distinctly Scottish edge and their faster numbers have been known to provoke ceilidh dancing at gigs. The NME branded them the Scottish Arcade Fire, although this is an accolade bestowed on My Latest Novel. The band, who swap instruments when performing live, have received comparisons to Arcade Fire. They were described by NME in 2008 as one of the countrys most exciting new bands and their album 2014 Weights and Pulleys was described as skilfull songwriting, immaculately executed, consistently excellent. Bear Hands is an American post-punk and indie rock band, consisting of Dylan Rau, Val Loper, Ted Feldman, and TJ Orscher. Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, United States, and formed in 2006, after releasing their debut LP Burning Bush Supper Club in 2010, Bear Hands toured as the opening act for Passion Pit, Gza, and We Were Promised Jetpacks. Their single Giants became a hit on the Alternative Songs chart in mid-2014. During an interview at SXSW2010, Orscher was quoted saying Dylan had some material he wanted to put with a band, and a project Val and I were working on for the last half decade just ended. He said he knew the perfect guitarist and when we met up and played for the first time, as cliche as it may be and we started writing material together, fleshing songs out and started playing some local shows around NYC. We fight like brothers and love like mothers, a few months after forming, the band released their first EP, Golden, and became a New York buzz band due to popular blog features. Sam Duckworth is an English musician formerly known as Get Cape. He is sometimes referred to as Get Cape, Cape, GCWCF, according to Duckworth, his original stage name came from Retro Gamer magazine, from an article about superhero games such as Batman containing the heading Get Cape. Hes currently releasing material under the name Recreations, Duckworth grew up in Southend-on-Sea, Essex. Get Cape was signed to Atlantic Records in March 2006, after playing many gigs, both with punk rock band Silverskin and as Get Cape. As Get Cape, Duckworth has collaborated with Billy Bragg, Nitin Sawhney, Shlomo, Killa Kela, Baba Maal, Flea, Kate Nash, Duckworth co-organised The Demolition Ball - the last night at the London Astoria venue before it was knocked down in January 2009. Get Cape also headlined the Astoria for his 21st birthday party, after 10 years, Duckworth decided to end Get Cape. Fly and to continue making under his own name, the last ever show under the Get Cape moniker was held at The Forum, Kentish Town on 12 September 2014. Get Capes debut album, The Chronicles of a Bohemian Teenager, is best described as an indie/folk/electronic fusion, the album made the top 100 albums of 2006 lists of Q and NME. It reached number 26 on the official UK album chart and spawned three top 40 singles, in October 2006, he performed as part of the BBC Electric Proms. He played at a number of festivals in 2007, including Oxegen, Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds Festivals and SXSW. In January 2007, Duckworth was nominated for best solo artist at the annual NME Awards, up against Lily Allen, Jamie T, Jarvis Cocker and Thom Yorke, get Capes second album, Searching for the Hows and Whys was released on 10 March 2008. It features guest vocals from Kate Nash on the track, Better Things, the album also features Billy Bragg on Interlude. Scars on 45 is an English indie rock band from Bradford. After years struggling to become known in England, the rose from obscurity when their song Beauty’s Running Wild was featured in an episode of CSI. The band were signed to Atlantic Records Chop Shop Records label. Most recently, the single, Heart on Fire was selected as the lead song for the eighth season soundtrack for ABC’s top rated hospital drama. The quintette was also named to Entertainment Weeklys Must List and their second EP, which also features Heart on Fire, was released on 24 October 2011. The band released Scars on 45, their first full-length studio album, the album was selected by the editors at Amazon. com as number 7 out of 50 Best Albums of 2012. When a broken foot ended lead singer Danny Bemrose’s professional football career as a striker for the Huddersfield Town A. F. C and he earnestly decided to learn how to play his father’s guitar. After his injury, Bemrose struck up a friendship with another former footballer, Stuart Nichols. Bemrose taught Nichols to play bass as they spent the few years improving their skill. When Bemrose wrote Insecurity, which is featured on the Heart on Fire EP, Soon thereafter, Nova was at home playing The Cures Friday Im in Love while his visiting schoolmate, Aimee Driver, was making a cup of tea and chimed in with the lyrics. I just started singing along when Nova rushed in seeming really shocked, I thought his dad had a heart attack or something. He made me stand there in his room and sing to him - which was the scariest thing ever at the time. At first I wouldn’t do it, but he wouldnt shut up so I just put my tea down, shut my eyes, the next thing I knew I was in the band. When I told my family and friends they were saying, ‘but you cant sing, can you. ’ Before joining the band, Stuart Nichols recruited drummer Chris Durling after meeting him in a pub and giving him a CD of the band’s music. After a late night out, Durling returned to his house and he enjoyed the results and agreed to work with them on recordings. He ended up becoming the member of the band a short time later. The band had difficulties deciding on a name and they realized a name was critical after a chance meeting with one of their musical influences, Noel Gallagher of Oasis. Toy are an English indie rock band from Brighton, East Sussex. They have released three albums, an EP and a number of singles, in 2015, the band collaborated with Natasha Khan on the Sexwitch project. Salvidge had previously presented The Sixties Show on Bristol radio station BCFM, shortly after, the band moved to London and six months later signed to Heavenly Records. The bands first live performance was at London venue, The Lexington, the band played at festivals in 2011 including Field Day and supported The Horrors on their UK autumn tour. The Horrors played a big role during the bands first years, supporting and helping them, the bands debut single, Left Myself Behind, was released in 2011 by Heavenly Records, the initial pressing of 100 selling out in a day. It was reissued in January 2012, the single was described by The Guardian as excellent. recalls some kind of late-80s/early-90s jam session between Stereolab, Felt and Pulp. The bands debut album, Toy, was released on 10 September 2012, the album was recorded and mixed in two weeks. The band supported the rock band The Vaccines on their UK Tour in May 2013. They announced the release of their album, Join the Dots on 14 October 2013. It was released on 9 December in Europe and the UK,2014 the band toured Europe in a nine-week trip including a lot of places outside the usual tour scheme like Ljubljana and Bratislava. End of April they played their biggest show in the UK so far, during the summer of 2014 the band played a number of European festivals. The following year, the continued to perform live sporadically while they continued work on their third record. At the end of August 2015 the band were part of a collaboration with Natasha Khan of Bat for Lashes and it consists of a six-track cover album that was recorded in day by Carey and set for release on 25 September. Alejandra Diez announced her departure from the band via their official Facebook page on 23 September 2015, max Oscarnold of The Proper Ornaments has since joined the band. In August 2016 the band announced their album and made the song Fast Silver available on streaming services. It was followed by the song Im Still Believing supported by a directed by Bunny Kinney in September. The bands third album Clear Shot appeared on 28 October 2016 and was produced by David Wrench, the Guardian called the album another fine effort from a band who are gradually building up an absorbing catalogue. The LP release included the EP Spellbound, was followed by a tour in support in November through to December, the bands sound has been described as a combination of psychedelic rock, krautrock, shoegaze and post-punk

Honeyblood is a Scottish musical duo formed in Glasgow, Scotland in 2012. The band is composed of Stina Marie Claire Tweeddale and Cat Myers, shona McVicar from Cumbernauld and Edinburgh-born Stina Marie Claire Tweeddale met when the bands they were playing in were playing the same concert. Tweeddale, who wanted to write and play her own music, originally, they intended to add other band members to fill out their sound, but they were asked to play gigs as a duo. It was here they realised they “weren’t missing anything musically. ”After just their second concert at Wide Days music conference in Edinburgh, Honeyblood drew the attention of FatCat Records, early on the band’s career McVicar was forced to take a break in order to complete her Dentistry degree. During this time, replacement drummer Rah Morriss worked to sustain the band’s growing career, in November 2013 the band travelled to Connecticut, USA to work with producer Peter Katis on their self-titled album. The album was recorded in just ten days In September 2014 McVicar left the band to other endeavours and was replaced by Cat Myers. They have supported acts including, Foo Fighters, Palma Violets, Sleigh Bells, Deap Vally, Courtney Barnett, We Were Promised Jetpacks. They have played showcases for the likes of The Skinny and Vice and festivals including the Great Escape, Wide Days in Edinburgh, the album was released by Fat Cat records on the 4th November in the UK/EU and 28th October in the US. The name comes from a Halloween concert that Tweeddale played and she states, “Honeyblood is actually a mixture of water, honey, cornflour and red food dye. ”She continues, “It comes from a lazy Hallowe’en costume I once made for a gig. Benjamin Garrett, better known by his stage name Fryars, is an English art pop musician from London. Fryars released his debut EP, The Ides, in September 2007, a second EP, The Perfidy, followed in March 2008. His debut album, Dark Young Hearts, was released in September 2009, its first single, Visitors, in October 2012, Fryars issued the song Love So Cold online as a free download, followed by the EP In My Arms in January 2013 via 679 Recordings. In October 2013,679 released Fryars EP Radio PWR, which was accompanied by a series of live shows devised with magician Simon Drake, Fryars second album, Power, which he produced with Luke Smith and Rodaidh McDonald, was released in November 2014 through Fiction Records. It followed a period of what he referred to as record label limbo. Power received positive reviews from Dazed & Confused, The Guardian, Fryars musical influences include David Bowie, Serge Gainsbourg, Kraftwerk, and The Strokes. He co-wrote the song Johanna with Miles Kane and Mark Ronson for the film Mortdecai, Fryars is affiliated with Universal Music Publishing Group

The Wytches

The Wytches are an English rock band formed in 2011 in Peterborough, and now based in Brighton. The band consists of singer-songwriter Kristian Bell, drummer Gianni Honey, bassist Daniel Rumsey, Kristian Bell and Gianni Honey had previously played together in The Crooked Canes in their hometown of Peterborough, whom the duo later dismissed as being really adolescent and embarrassing. Honey was taught by former Morrissey drummer Spike T. Smith and played in bands, Through Fire This Fall. Following the split of The Crooked Canes, the duo moved to Brighton to attend university, Daniel Rumsey was the only person to respond and joined the band. Rumsey was an originally from Dorset who had fronted the horror punk band Fall Victim before moving to Brighton where he fronted Dan Rumsey & The Bitter End. Initially called The Witches, the changed the spelling to Wytches to make their band name more easily found on Google. The band originally featured second guitarist Mark Breed, with whom Bell later started a project with called Beach Whores. The band released their debut single Beehive Queen in June 2013 via Hate Hate Hate Records, in September 2013 the band released a low key limited edition cassette Thunder Lizard Revisited. The band released their debut US single Crying Clown via Fat Possum Records in November 2013, on 4 February 2014, the band announced they had signed with Heavenly Recordings and released Gravedweller as a free digital single. The band also signed to Partisan Records in the US, the band released their debut album Annabel Dream Reader in August 2014. The album was recorded two days at Toe Rag Studios in Hackney, London and co-produced by Bell and former Coral guitarist Bill Ryder-Jones. The album was recorded and mixed by Luke Oldfield on an 8-track Studer A80 and it reached number 50 in the UK Albums Chart. In August 2016, Mark Breed joined the band as a permanent member, in September 2016 they released their second album All Your Happy Life.
