Democrats 66 is a social liberal and progressive political party in the Netherlands, which positions itself in the centre of the political spectrum. It is a member of the Liberal International (LI) and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE).

Social liberalism is a political philosophy and variety of liberalism that endorses social justice, social services, a mixed economy, and the expansion of civil and political rights, as opposed to classical liberalism which maintains the status quo and supports an unregulated economy with very few government services.
Leonard Hobhouse was one of the originators of social liberalism, notably through his book Liberalism, published in 1911.
