The Doctor (Doctor Who)

The Doctor is the title character and protagonist in the long-running BBC science fiction television programme Doctor Who. The character has also featured in one made-for-television film. In the programme, the Doctor is the alias assumed by a centuries-old alien—a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey—who travels through space and time in his TARDIS, since the shows inception in 1963, the character has been portrayed by twelve lead actors. The War Doctor and an aborted regeneration are counted in his previous cycle of twelve regenerations, a number of other actors have played the character in stage and audio plays, as well as in various film and television productions. The character has been well received by the public, with his enduring popularity leading The Daily Telegraph to dub him Britains favourite alien. On 30 January 2017, Capaldi confirmed that the series would be his last. His kind have dedicated themselves to overseeing all of time and space without interference, the Doctor chose to leave his home by stealing an obsolete TARDIS model as revealed in the 1969 serial The War Games and depicted in the 2013 episode The Name of the Doctor. With this vehicle, the Doctor explores the universe with usually human companions who serve as audience surrogate characters to ask questions which allow the Doctor to provide relevant exposition, spin-off media offer the explanation that his true name is unpronounceable by humans. In The Name of the Doctor, the Eleventh Doctor tells companion Clara Oswald that the name Doctor is essentially a promise he made, the promise itself is revealed in The Day of the Doctor, Never cruel nor cowardly. The Doctors earlier life and childhood on Gallifrey has been little described, the classic programme refers to his time at the Academy and his affiliation with the notoriously devious Prydonian chapter of Time Lords. Some are inspired, some go mad and some run away, when asked to which group he belonged, he replied, Oh, the ones that ran away, I never stopped. In the Armageddon Factor, it is revealed that the Doctor scraped through the Academy with 51% on his second attempt, in The Time Meddler, it is said that the Doctor was fifty years before the Meddling Monk. In Time and the Rani, the Doctor claims to have attended University alongside the Rani, specialising in thermodynamics. In The Time Monster, the Doctor says he grew up in a house on a mountainside and he is later reunited with this former mentor, now on Earth posing as the abbot Kanpo Rimpoche, in Planet of the Spiders. In other media, more has been revealed of the Doctors early life, in the Past Doctor Adventures novel Divided Loyalties, the Doctor recalls his Academy years in a dream induced by the Celestial Toymaker. With this group, he learns about the Celestial Toymaker and travels to his realm in a type 18 TARDIS with Deca members Rallon and Millennia and this leads to the Doctors expulsion from the Academy, condemned to five hundred years in Records and Traffic Control. In The Quantum Archangel, it is revealed the Doctor studied cosmic science alongside the Master, feeling that too much of the Doctors backstory had been revealed by the Seventh Doctors era, writers Andrew Cartmel, Ben Aaronovitch and Marc Platt developed a new direction for the series. Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme produced by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called The Doctor and he explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. Its exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. Accompanied by a number of companions, the Doctor combats a variety of foes, while working to save civilisations, the show is a significant part of British popular culture, and elsewhere it has gained a cult following. It has influenced generations of British television professionals, many of whom grew up watching the series, the programme originally ran from 1963 to 1989. There was an attempt to revive regular production in 1996 with a backdoor pilot. The programme was relaunched in 2005, and since then has been produced in-house by BBC Wales in Cardiff, twelve actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The conceit is that this is a Time Lord trait through which the character of the Doctor takes on a new body, each actors portrayal differs, but all represent stages in the life of the same character and form a single narrative. The time-travelling feature of the means that different incarnations of the Doctor occasionally meet. The current lead, Peter Capaldi, took on the role after Matt Smiths exit in the 2013 Christmas special The Time of the Doctor, in 2017, Capaldi confirmed he would be leaving at the end of the tenth series. Doctor Who follows the adventures of the character, a rogue Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey. He fled from Gallifrey in a stolen TARDIS – Time and Relative Dimension in Space – a machine which allows him to travel across time, the TARDIS has a chameleon circuit which normally allows the machine to take on the appearance of local objects as a disguise. However, the Doctors TARDIS remains fixed as a blue British police box due to a malfunction in the chameleon circuit, the Doctor rarely travels alone and often brings one or more companions to share these adventures. His companions are usually humans, as he has found a fascination with planet Earth, as a Time Lord, the Doctor has the ability to regenerate when his body is mortally damaged, taking on a new appearance and personality. The Doctor has gained numerous reoccurring enemies during his travels, including the Daleks, the Cybermen, and the Master, another renegade Time Lord. Doctor Who first appeared on BBC TV at 17,16,20 GMT, eighty seconds after the programme time,5,15 pm. It was to be a weekly programme, each episode 25 minutes of transmission length. The Eleventh Hour (Doctor Who)

The Eleventh Hour is the first episode of the series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who, first broadcast on BBC One. The episode saw a change in cast and production crew. The episode was written by new writer and executive producer Steven Moffat. In the episode, the newly regenerated Doctor crashes his time and space machine, the TARDIS, into the small English village of Leadworth, the Doctor is forced to leave, but promises Amelia he will return in five minutes. However, he arrives twelve years late and is confronted by the grown-up Amelia, now known as Amy and he attempts to gain her trust to help return the shape-shifting alien Prisoner Zero to the galactic police, the Atraxi, before they destroy the planet. The episode is the debut of Smith as the incarnation of the Doctor. It also introduced Arthur Darvill as Amys boyfriend Rory Williams, who would become a main cast member. The shows tradition is for the Doctor to rest after he regenerates, the episode sets up the main story arc of the series by introducing the cracks in the universe. The Eleventh Hour was seen by 10.08 million viewers in the UK and it also attracted popularity on the online BBC iPlayer and on BBC America in the United States. The episode received positive reviews critics, who welcomed Smith. Continuing from the end of The End of Time, Part 2, while waiting for the TARDIS to self-repair, he explores his new face, and discovers that while he has a distaste for many foods, his new body likes the taste of fish custard. Amelia then shows the Doctor a scary crack in her bedroom wall, the Doctor discovers it is a crack in time and space itself, briefly opening it to discover an Atraxi prison. The Atraxi send a message to the Doctor that Prisoner Zero has escaped. Amelia hastily packs a suitcase and waits near where the TARDIS had previously landed, the Doctor lands the TARDIS outside Amelias house, unaware 12 years have passed. On searching the house, he is knocked out and wakes up handcuffed and he discovers his assailant is a much older Amelia, now going by the name Amy. Her fascination in waiting for his return led her to create toys and stories about him, the Doctor then reveals to Amy that Prisoner Zero has been hiding in a room in her house that she had never noticed, due to a perception filter. After venturing into the room, she frees the Doctor and grants him his sonic screwdriver and they dodge an attack by Prisoner Zero and flee the house

The Time of the Doctor

The episode also features Jenna Coleman as the Doctors companion Clara Oswald, plus several enemies of the Doctor, including the Cybermen, Silence, Daleks, and Weeping Angels. The Time of the Doctor is the ninth Christmas special since the shows 2005 revival, thousands of aliens orbit an unknown planet, from which a message no one can translate is continually being broadcast across time and space. The Doctor, drawn to the planet, uses a modified Cyberman head nicknamed Handles who tells him the planet is named Gallifrey. Tasha states they have constructed a force field around the planet to prevent the aliens from landing. On the planet, they discover a human settlement called Christmas where a truth field prevents anyone from lying, the message originates from the basement of a church, through a crack in reality, scar tissue from when the Doctor rebooted the universe. Handles identifies the message as Gallifreyan, repeating the question Doctor who, the Doctor deduces that his people, the Time Lords trapped in a pocket universe, are trying to escape into this universe and seek him to answer his true name to confirm this is the correct universe. However, their reappearance will inevitably start a new Time War, Tasha warns him that should the Time Lords try to escape, she will destroy the planet and anyone on it to prevent a new Time War, creating a stalemate situation for the Doctor. Clara, furious at being tricked, jumps onto the TARDIS before it can dematerialises, the visibly-aged Doctor reveals to her that his body has no further regenerations left, and is prepared to die here. The Doctor discovers that Tasha and all her members have become Dalek puppets, the Doctor manages to infuriate Tasha, allowing her to break the Dalek conditioning, and she helps them to escape back to the planet as the Dalek fleet amasses in orbit. The Doctor manages to lie to Clara despite the field, and tricks her again to the TARDIS. Her family attempts to cheer her up but she remains dejected until she hears the TARDIS rematerialise a few hours later. She finds Tasha piloting the ship, and she takes her back to Trenzalore, many centuries after the Doctor sent her away, the Doctor, frail and senile, has held his defenses against a protracted siege on Trenzalore, but cannot stop a final attack from the Daleks. After saying goodbye to Clara, he out to the church steeple to face his enemies. Clara speaks to the Time Lords through the crack, begging them to help the Doctor and reminding that if he should die, the Doctor prepares to die outside, when the crack appears in the night sky. Regeneration energy flows from the crack and into the Doctor, granting him a new regeneration cycle, the Doctor uses the excess energy of his regeneration to destroy the Daleks, while the crack closes up, ending the stalemate. In the aftermath, Clara finds him again in the TARDIS console room. As he sets the TARDIS in motion, he explains this rejuvenation is a reset for the new regeneration cycle to begin and he delivers a eulogy to his current form, hallucinates a final farewell to Amy Pond, and regenerates. The Twelfth Doctor then declares that the TARDIS is crashing and asks Clara if she knows how to fly it, as this is the Eleventh Doctors final regular appearance, numerous plot threads developed over the course of his journey are addressed

Matthew Robert Matt Smith is an English actor. He is best known for his role as the Eleventh Doctor in the BBC science fiction series Doctor Who, Smith initially aspired to be a professional footballer, but spondylolysis forced him out of the sport. Smith, who was announced as the incarnation of the Doctor in January 2009, is the youngest person to play the character in the British television series. He left the series at the end of the 2013 Christmas Day special and he portrayed both the physical embodiment and a holographic version of Skynet in Terminator Genisys. Since 2016, he portrays Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in Peter Morgans Netflix biographical drama series The Crown, Smith was born and raised in Northampton, the son of David and Lynne Smith. He attended Northampton School for Boys and he had planned to be a professional football player, having played for the youth teams of Northampton Town, Nottingham Forest, and Leicester City. After a serious injury ruined this career, his drama teacher introduced him to acting by signing him up as the tenth juror in an adaptation of Twelve Angry Men without his consent. His drama teacher persisted, and eventually persuaded him to join the National Youth Theatre in London, after leaving school, Smith studied drama and creative writing at the University of East Anglia, graduating in 2005. His first theatre roles as part of the National Youth Theatre were Thomas Becket in Murder in the Cathedral and Bassoon in The Master and his role in the latter earned him an agent and his first professional jobs, Fresh Kills and On the Shore of the Wide World. His new professional roles led him to seek an agreement with his university so that he could graduate without attending lectures in his final year. Smiths first television role was as Jim Taylor in the BBC adaptations of the Sally Lockhart quartet books The Ruby in the Smoke and his first major television role came in the television series Party Animals, a BBC television drama series about fictional parliamentary advisors and researchers in Westminster. In Party Animals, Smith portrays Danny Foster, a researcher to Jo Porter. At 26 years old, Danny is described as an intelligent, within the series narrative, he attempts to balance his affections for Kirsty MacKenzie, his intern, while trying to prevent Porters imminent decline. In an interview in 2007, Smith discussed his characters motivations and he summarised Danny as having a romantic outlook of the political world while being cynical elsewhere. The character was drawn into politics by his father and his own political drive and he defended his characters age by characterising him as being loyal to Porter, instead of being incompetent. Smith was revealed as the Eleventh Doctor in the British science-fiction television series Doctor Who in January 2009 to replace David Tennant, who announced his departure in October 2008. Smith was first named as a possible successor less than a day before he was announced as the Eleventh Doctor, on edition of 3 January 2009 of BBC Breakfast and his obscurity prompted the news headline Doctor Who. David Tennant is a Scottish actor and voice actor. In the film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, in addition to his appearances on screen, he has worked as a voice actor and in theatre, including a critically acclaimed stage production of Hamlet. In January 2015, Tennant received the National Television Award for Special Recognition, Tennant was born in Bathgate, West Lothian, the son of Alexander Sandy McDonald, a minister who served as the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, and Helen McLeod. He grew up with his brother Blair and sister Karen in Ralston, Renfrewshire, William was a member of the Orange Order. Tennants maternal grandfather, footballer Archie McLeod, met William and Agnes daughter Nellie while playing for Derry City FC, McLeod was descended from tenant farmers from the Isle of Mull. At the age of three, Tennant told his parents that he wanted to become an actor because he was a fan of Doctor Who and he watched almost every Doctor Who episode for years, and he spoke to Tom Baker at a book-signing event in Glasgow. Tennant says he was absurdly single-minded in pursuing an acting career, Tennant was educated at Ralston Primary and Paisley Grammar School. He acted in productions throughout primary and secondary school. Tennants talent at this age was spotted by Scottish actress Edith MacArthur. After seeing his first performance at age 11, she told his parents he would become a stage actor. Tennant has stated that he later had to change his name to Tennant to meet Screen Actors Guild rules. Tennant made his acting debut while still in secondary school. When he was 16, he acted in a film made by the Glasgow Health Board which aired on television and was also screened in schools. The following year, he played a role in an episode of Dramarama and he also made an early television appearance in the Scottish TV sitcom Rab C Nesbitt as a transsexual barmaid called Davina. In the 1990s, he appeared in plays at the Dundee Repertory Theatre. Tennants first major TV role was as the manic depressive Campbell in the Scottish drama series Takin Over the Asylum, during filming, he met comic actress and writer Arabella Weir. When he moved to London shortly afterwards, he lodged with Weir for five years, One of his earliest big-screen roles was in Jude, in which he shared a scene with Christopher Eccleston, playing a drunken undergraduate who challenges Ecclestons Jude to prove his intellect. Coincidentally, Eccleston portrayed the incarnation of The Doctor immediately preceding Tennants, Tennant developed his career in the British theatre, frequently performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company

Peter Capaldi

For reprising the role in the spinoff film In the Loop, Capaldi was honoured several film critic award nominations for Best Supporting Actor. He further took on the role of Paddington Bears irascible neighbour Mr. Curry in the comedy film Paddington. As a director, Capaldi won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film and he went on to write and direct the drama film Strictly Sinatra and helmed two series of sitcom Getting On. Capaldi was born in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of Nancy and his paternal grandfather was Italian while the rest of his ancestry is Scottish and Irish. His parents ran an ice cream business and he was educated at St Teresas Primary School in Possilpark, St Matthews Primary School in Bishopbriggs, and St Ninians High School, Kirkintilloch, before attending the Glasgow School of Art. Capaldi displayed a talent for performance by putting on a puppet show in primary school. While at high school, he was a member of the Antonine Players, as an art student, he was the lead singer and guitarist in a punk rock band called The Dreamboys, whose drummer was future comedian Craig Ferguson. Capaldi has appeared in over 40 films and television shows since his appearance as Danny Oldsen in Local Hero and he voiced Chief Petty Officer Grieves in the BBC Radio Ministry of Defence comedy Our Brave Boys. Capaldis first starring role on television was as Luke Wakefield, a gay man who imagines he has witnessed a crime. He played fictional Songs of Praise producer Tristan Campbell in two episodes of the sitcom The Vicar of Dibley, and a transvestite in ITVs Prime Suspect, in Neil Gaimans gothic fantasy Neverwhere, he portrayed the angel Islington. Capaldi is also a narrator, and his many titles include several of the works of Iain Banks. He starred as Rory in the 1996 television version of Bankss The Crow Road, in the 1999 Channel 4 series Psychos, he played a mathematician with bipolar disorder. Capaldi made an appearance as a university professor in the sitcom Peep Show, in 2007, Capaldi appeared as Mark Jenkins in the E4 teen comedy drama series Skins. He returned for a series in 2008, only to be killed off in the third episode. He appeared in the Midsomer Murders episode Death in Chorus and ITV1s Fallen Angel and he also appeared in the 2007 British comedy film Magicians. He appeared as King Charles I in the Channel 4 series The Devils Whore, Capaldi provided his voice for the animated film Haunted Hogmanay in 2006. He played Balthazar, one of the Biblical Magi, in the 2010 BBC adaptation of The Nativity, in November 2011, he began playing Professor Marcus in The Ladykillers at the Liverpool Playhouse, then transferred to the Gielgud Theatre in London. The 2013 specials of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who are two additional episodes following the programmes seventh series. In addition to the traditional Christmas episode, which has been a feature of the series since 2005. Both episodes starred Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor and Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald, the 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor saw the guest returns of former series leads David Tennant and Billie Piper. The 2013 Christmas special, The Time of the Doctor, saw the departure of Smith from the series, the Day of the Doctor features the return of the Zygons for the first time since Terror of the Zygons in 1975. The Time of the Doctor draws together a number of threads that have run through the series since the Eleventh Doctors first episode in 2010. The casting of Tennant and Piper was announced by the BBC on 30 March 2013, photographs of Smith, Tennant and Coleman at the first read-through were published, which also confirmed the casting of Gavin & Stacey star Joanna Page. On 8 April 2013, the BBC announced that Jemma Redgrave would reprise her role as Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewarts daughter Kate Stewart from The Power of Three. Rumours had also circulated that Christopher Eccleston would have some involvement, Eccleston had some discussions with Steven Moffat, sylvester McCoy, who played the Seventh Doctor, claimed that none of the surviving actors who portrayed the Doctor prior to Eccleston had been contacted regarding the special. Despite claiming that it would be a travesty if his character did not feature in the special, the release of The Night of the Doctor on the 14th November revealed that Paul McGann had returned to portray the Eighth Doctor. On 1 June 2013, Matt Smith announced that he would be leaving Doctor Who, with his final episode being the 2013 Christmas Special, speculation about the identity of the actor set to take over began immediately, with a number of names suggested. The 2013 special is the fourth and final Christmas episode to feature Matt Smiths incarnation of the Doctor, and the second to feature Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald. Moffat has stated that the Christmas episode is intended to tie together the remaining story strands from the Eleventh Doctor era, the special ties up stuff from all corners of Matts tenure – there are things I set in motion in Matts very first episode that Im paying off now. Its been a game, but most of the questions that people ask will be answered. In September 2013, it was revealed that the Cybermen would feature in the Christmas episode, filming of The Day of the Doctor began on 2 April 2013, with David Tennant, Billie Piper, John Hurt and Joanna Page seen at a location outside Neath in South Wales. On 9 April filming took place involving Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman in Trafalgar Square in London, various other locations included Chepstow, and Cardiff – scenes shot in Cardiff are intended to represent both Totters Lane and Coal Hill School. Shooting wrapped on 5 May 2013, at the 2013 Comic-Con, Matt Smith confirmed that production of the Christmas episode would begin in September, once his work on How to Catch a Monster was complete. Filming for The Time of the Doctor began on 8 September, on 19 September 2013, scenes were filmed in the evening at Puzzlewood with fake snow being scattered over certain areas. On 5 October 2013, Doctor Who producer Marcus Wilson revealed via Twitter that filming was complete, in addition to the 50th anniversary episode featuring Matt Smith and David Tennant, a further special was produced to celebrate Doctor Whos half-century

Amy Pond, also known as Amelia Pond, is a fictional character portrayed by Karen Gillan in the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who. Amy is a companion of the series protagonist the Doctor, in his eleventh incarnation and she appears in the programme from the fifth series to midway through the seventh series. The Doctor first meets Amelia when she is seven years old, however, she eventually decides to travel with him, and the duo are later joined by her fiancé Rory Williams. Amy and Rory marry at the end of the series and in the sixth series Amy gives birth to their daughter, Melody Pond. Amelia Pond is introduced in the first episode of the series, The Eleventh Hour. She asks him to investigate an unusual crack in her wall, but he is interrupted by an alert from his time machine and he promises Amelia that he will return in five minutes, but is inadvertently late by twelve years. In the intervening period, Amelias family and friends believe the Doctor is just her imaginary friend, when the Doctor returns, Amy is nineteen years old and working as a kissogram. She helps him save Earth from the police force the Atraxi. At the end of Flesh and Stone, Amy reveals that they had left Earth on the eve of her marriage to Rory Williams, the Doctor finds Rory and takes him and Amy to 16th century Venice on an intended romantic date after which Rory continues travelling with them. In Amys Choice, Amy is pressured to resolve her feelings for the Doctor and Rory. At the end of Cold Blood, Rory is killed by a Silurian, because he is part of Amys own time-line, she ceases to remember him. The Doctor takes Amy to 19th century France to lessen his guilt about Rorys loss, in the fifth series finale, The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang, Rory reappears in 102 AD as a Roman centurion. He triggers Amys memories, but as she remembers, it is revealed that the centurion Rory is actually an Auton—a duplicate of living plastic—created from Amys memories to help capture the Doctor, Rorys consciousness tries to fight his programming, but he is compelled to shoot and kill her. Amys body is alive in the Pandorica, a special prison intended to trap the Doctor. The Auton Rory protects it for 2000 years, the Doctor realises that Amy is connected to the cracks in the universe which originated from a temporal explosion on her wedding day. He tells her that her parents had been erased by the crack in her wall, after he uses the Pandorica to reboot the universe, the Doctor travels back through his timeline and is able to plant memories in Amy of the TARDIS. Amy awakes on her day in a timeline where her parents are again part of reality. Her memories are stirred by the TARDIS-shaped diary River Song leaves for her, once Amy remembers the Doctor, he is restored to reality

Rory Williams is a fictional character portrayed by Arthur Darvill in the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who. Having been introduced at the start of the 5th series, Rory joins the Eleventh Doctor as a companion in the middle of Series 5, as Amy Ponds fiancé, Rory is initially insecure because he believes Amy secretly loves the Doctor more. Later, however, he proves to be a hero in his own right and he, the couple conceive a daughter aboard the Doctors time machine, the TARDIS, while in the time vortex, but their baby is kidnapped at birth. In A Good Man Goes to War, Rory and Amy discover their time-traveler friend River Song is actually their daughter Melody Pond, the Doctor and River marry in The Wedding of River Song, and Rory becomes the Doctors father-in-law. In The Angels Take Manhattan, the episode of the seventh series, he and Amy are transported back in time by a Weeping Angel. Rory is introduced in The Eleventh Hour as a nurse in a coma ward and he is shocked to meet Amys imaginary Raggedy Doctor - the Eleventh Doctor, whom he instantly recognises from Amys childhood stories. Two years later, Amy absconds on the eve of their wedding to travel with the Doctor, in response, the Doctor takes Amy and Rory to 1580s Venice to repair and strengthen the couples relationship, at the end of the episode Rory joins them as a travelling companion. He next appears in The Pandorica Opens, as a Roman soldier in 102 C. E. but is revealed to be an Auton with Rorys memories, Rory attempts to fight his Auton programming, but unwillingly shoots Amy. In the Series 5 finale episode, The Big Bang, the duplicate Rory preserves Amy in stasis using a futuristic prison called the Pandorica and he becomes known as the Last Centurion, guarding the Pandorica wherever it is taken. The Auton Rory assists the Doctor, Amy, and River Song in saving the universe from the explosion caused the cracks in time. Restored to his original timeline but still possessing memories of his Auton existence. The couple continue traveling with the Doctor, who allows them a honeymoon and they are said to still be on their honeymoon in both The Sarah Jane Adventures serial Death of the Doctor and the Christmas special A Christmas Carol. Series 6 premiere The Impossible Astronaut begins with Amy and Rory living back on Earth when they are contacted by the Doctor, via a letter, in Utah they witness the Doctor dying in his relative future at the hands of a mysterious assassin. Dressed in his armor, he faces down a space fleet of Cybermen to learn Amys location. Lets Kill Hitler begins by revealing that Melody went on to become Amy and Rorys childhood friend, Mels, so that she one day meet. As Amy had initially assumed Rory was gay due to his lack of interest in other women, on 21st century Earth, Mels hijacks the TARDIS and directs it to 1938, where she is shot by Hitler and regenerates into River Song. They learn she is the assailant they saw kill the Doctor in his future, at the episodes conclusion, they decide to let the adult River make her own way in life and continue their travels. River Song is a fictional character created by Steven Moffat and played by Alex Kingston in the British science-fiction series Doctor Who. River Song was introduced to the series as a future companion of series protagonist the Doctor. Because River Song is a time traveller herself, her adventures with the Doctor occur out of synchronisation, their first meeting is his first and apparently her last. In later appearances, River is a companion, romantic interest and eventual wife of the Doctor in his eleventh incarnation, River Song was created by Doctor Who writer Steven Moffat for the shows fourth series in 2008, under the tenure of executive producer Russell T Davies. Other actresses have subsequently portrayed younger versions of the character, when the character was first introduced, much about her origins remained a mystery. Following the characters appearance, Davies had described her as one of the most important characters in the narrative. In series six, Moffats episodes unveil more about the character, born Melody Pond, River is the daughter of the Eleventh Doctors companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams, alongside whom Kingston had already appeared several times in series five and six of the show. Having been conceived on board the TARDIS as it travelled through the vortex, Melody is born with genetic traits and abilities similar to those of the Doctors own race. River Song first appears in the Doctor Who 2008 series two-parter Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead during the Russell T Davies era of Doctor Who. Here, she encounters the Tenth Doctor in the 52nd century and, though he has never met her, claims to be someone he will come to trust completely. In the second of the two episodes she sacrifices herself to save the people who were trapped in the Librarys database, knocking out the Doctor before he can do the same. In turn, he is able to upload a copy of her consciousness into a computer and he achieves this via the use of a sonic screwdriver given to her by his future self. After Moffat took over from Davies as executive producer of the show, in the two-parter The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone, which takes place prior to River becoming a professor, she encounters the Eleventh Doctor, with whom she is more familiar. She leaves coordinates for the Doctor so that he may rescue her in the 52nd century, and together they investigate the crash of the spaceship Byzantium. She shows herself to be adept at flying the TARDIS than he is. An earlier version of River appears to assist the Doctor in the series finale The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang, after being contacted by Winston Churchill, River leads the Doctor to 102 A. D. While River is travelling in the TARDIS on her own, it explodes with her inside, the Doctor, using Rivers vortex manipulator, teleports her out. Clara Oswald is a fictional character created by Steven Moffat and portrayed by Jenna Coleman in the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who. First appearing in the seventh series, Clara served as a companion of the eleventh and twelfth incarnations of the alien time traveller known as the Doctor. Clara is initially presented to the audience during the first half of Series 7 as three distinct, though similarly named, people living in different eras of time, the first two incarnations, Oswin Oswald and Clara Oswin Oswald, each die during the episode in which they appear. The third incarnation becomes the Doctors companion, travelling with him for the remainder of the series as he tries to uncover the mystery of her multiple lives, the mystery is later resolved in The Name of the Doctor. She continues to travel with the Doctor, witnessing him regenerate into his twelfth incarnation in The Time of the Doctor, the pair have various adventures together in Series 8 and Series 9 until she departs the show in Hell Bent. Oswin Oswald is introduced in the series 7 premiere, Asylum of the Daleks and she is the sole survivor of the starship Alaska, which crashed on the Asylum, a prison planet for insane Daleks. Oswin then learns from the Eleventh Doctor that she has converted from human into a Dalek and has coped by retreating into a fantasy of her own intact survival. She assists the Doctor and his companions, Amy Pond and Rory Williams, to escape the planet unharmed. Later, in the 2012 Christmas special The Snowmen, the Doctor meets a woman named Clara Oswin Oswald and she is a Victorian barmaid and governess whom the Doctor invites to be his newest companion, but who dies from an attack by one of the Great Intelligences minions. Seeing her full name on her tombstone and finally recognising her voice, the Doctor realises she is the woman as Oswin from the Dalek Asylum. Intrigued by the mystery of the woman who has lived and died twice in different eras, in The Bells of Saint John, Clara receives a phone number to the Doctors time and space vessel, the TARDIS, from a mysterious woman. The Doctor finds Clara Oswald in contemporary London through her phone call, in Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS, the Doctor confronts Clara in an averted timeline about the two previous versions of her he had met, but she does not know what he is talking about. The mystery surrounding Clara is finally resolved in The Name of the Doctor when she sacrifices her existence by entering the Doctors timestream to undo the harm caused by the Great Intelligence. This results in the creation of numerous incarnations of Clara throughout the Doctors history who appear to every known face of the Doctor, very few Claras are noticed by the Doctor, however. One version of Clara successfully persuades the First Doctor to pick the right TARDIS on his home planet Gallifrey, lost in the Doctors timestream, she is eventually rescued and brought back into existence by the Eleventh Doctor. In The Day of the Doctor, the shows 50th anniversary special, while on an adventure with the Doctor, she meets the Tenth Doctor and the War Doctor in person. She manages to convince the War Doctor to change his history, by sealing the planet in a pocket universe. In The Time of the Doctor, the Time Lords try to return to the universe through a crack in time, but if they do so and she then witnesses the Doctor regenerate into the Twelfth Doctor

The fifth series of British science fiction television programme Doctor Who began on 3 April 2010 with The Eleventh Hour and ended with The Big Bang on 26 June 2010. The series was led by writer and executive producer Steven Moffat, who took over after Russell T Davies. The series comprises 13 episodes, six of which Moffat wrote, Piers Wenger and Beth Willis served with Moffat as executive producers, while Tracie Simpson and Peter Bennett served as producers. Though it is the series since the shows revival in 2005 and the thirty-first since it began in 1963. Alex Kingston returns as River Song, a woman from the Doctors future who summons the Doctor twice in this series. The main story arc concerns a pattern of cracks in the universe which appear over several episodes, sometimes going unnoticed by the characters and it is discovered that they have the power to erase things from existence, and this happens to Rory, causing Amy to forget him. In the series finale it is revealed that the cracks were caused by the TARDIS exploding, the seven episodes of the series which were not written by Moffat were penned by guest writers. Mark Gatiss, Toby Whithouse, Simon Nye, Richard Curtis, Gareth Roberts each wrote one episode each, the episodes were directed by directors who were all new to Doctor Who. Though overnight ratings had declined compared to series, one writer calculated that viewership had not changed significantly when time-shifted ratings were taken into account. The series received positive reviews, with praise going to Moffats story arc as well as the acting of Smith, Gillan. However, many noted that Amy lacked character development and the series did not contain as much heart. The series gained many awards and nominations, Vincent and the Doctor, Smith also became the first actor portraying the Doctor to be nominated for a BAFTA award, though he did not win. Two additional scenes were filmed for The Complete Fifth Series boxset which reveal what occurred between selected regular episodes. The first installment is set between The Eleventh Hour and The Beast Below, while the second is set between Flesh and Stone and The Vampires of Venice, the series introduced a new incarnation of the Doctor, the Eleventh, played by Matt Smith. This followed the departure of David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor, Smiths agent had called him and suggested that he try out for the role. Moffat was looking to cast an actor, who was young enough to run. However, Smith, who was only 26 when cast, was the person to audition. Moffat also stated that Smith did not appear to be youthful at all, Karen Gillan was cast as Amy Pond, the Doctors companion

The sixth series of British science fiction television programme Doctor Who was shown in two parts. The first seven episodes were broadcast from April to June 2011, beginning with The Impossible Astronaut, the final six episodes aired from August to October, beginning with Lets Kill Hitler and ending with The Wedding of River Song. The main series was preceded by A Christmas Carol, the 2010 Christmas special, the series was led by head writer and executive producer Steven Moffat, alongside executive producers Beth Willis and Piers Wenger. Sanne Wohlenberg, Marcus Wilson, and Denise Paul served as producers, the series is the sixth to air following the programmes revival in 2005, and is the thirty-second season overall. The series stars Matt Smith as the incarnation of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in his TARDIS. It also stars Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill as his companions, newlyweds Amy Pond, alex Kingston also returns as River Song, a mysterious woman from the Doctors future who is revealed throughout the series to be Amy and Rorys part-Time Lord daughter and the Doctors wife. In addition to River, the series continues story threads from the series, most notably the Silence. This series was the first to include a mid-season broadcast break since Season 15, a number of short prequel videos were released online prior to selected episodes airings. Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill continued their roles as The Doctor, Amy Pond, Darvill had appeared in the previous series in a recurring role, but became a regular in this series. Darvill had his fingers crossed that he would become a regular, alex Kingston returned as River Song. James Corden also reprised his role as Craig Owens from The Lodger in Closing Time, a Christmas Carol guest-starred Michael Gambon and Katherine Jenkins. Neither Peter Bennett or Tracie Simpson returned as producers, with Sanne Wohlenberg covering the role for the A Christmas Carol, Marcus Wilson produced every other episode except Closing Time, where Denise Paul produces and Wilson is credited as series producer. Production designer Edward Thomas was replaced by Michael Pickwoad, lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat stated that the purpose of the previous series was to reassure the audience that the show was the same, despite the many production changes. However, he wanted this series to be more of a ghost train, Moffat decided to rest the Doctors arch-enemies the Daleks for the series, as being the most frequent enemies of the show made them the most reliably defeatable enemies in the universe. The series continues to build the mystery of the Silence, which had been introduced in the fifth series. Moffat did not wish to end the arc in the previous series, Moffat had planned the revelation about River Song for a long time, when creating Amys character, he chose Pond for her last name to create a link. Moffat intended for the answer to be as complicated as the question, rivers identity was kept in top secrecy, the script read at the read-through of A Good Man Goes to War had a false ending, and only a select few were issued the real script. Matthew Graham was not able to write an episode as he was slated to for the series because he did not believe he would have enough time

The seventh series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who aired from 1 September 2012 to 18 May 2013, being split into two parts, as with the previous series. Following its premiere on 1 September 2012, the series aired weekly until 29 September 2012, six episodes were broadcast in 2012, including the 2012 Christmas special, The Snowmen, which aired separately from the main series. The remaining eight episodes began broadcasting on 30 March 2013, the Snowmen introduced a new TARDIS interior, title sequence, theme tune, and outfit for the Doctor. Doctor Whos seventh series was the third and final series to feature Matt Smith, Karen Gillan. They reprised their roles of the Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond and Rory Williams, Gillan and Darvill departed the series in the fifth episode, after which a new companion named Clara Oswald joined the Doctor, played by Jenna Coleman, remaining with the series for its second half. It also features the appearance of the Doctors enemy, The Great Intelligence - who were later revealed to be trying to gain the Doctors true name for their own plans. Smith stayed for one year longer than Gillan and Darvill, and departed after the 2013 specials, with his final appearance being in the 2013 Christmas special The Time of the Doctor. As with Series 6, this series was split into two parts, with the first five episodes broadcast between the 1 and 29 September 2012, ending with The Angels Take Manhattan. Following the Christmas episode, The Snowmen, the series resumed with The Bells of Saint John on 30 March 2013, for the first time in the shows history, each episode of this series is a standalone story with no multi-parters. Prologue videos to selected episodes were released via online outlets. The seventh series marked Matt Smiths third and final series as the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor. Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill, who portray Amy Pond and Rory Williams respectively, the circumstances in which the pair leave was a mutual decision from Gillan and showrunner Steven Moffat. The actress previously stated that she did not want to make return cameos to the show, on 21 March 2012, it was announced that Jenna Coleman would replace Gillan and Darvill as the next companion. She auditioned for the role in secrecy, pretending it was for something called Men on Waves, Moffat chose her for the role because she worked the best alongside Smith and could talk faster than him. He stated that her character will be different from previous companions, in Asylum of the Daleks, Coleman appears as the character Oswin Oswald, a secret which was kept from the public before transmission. Coleman was originally given the role of a Victorian governess named Jasmine and she originally thought that the producers were looking for the right character, but later realised it was part of Moffats soft mystery plan. Dougray Scott, Jessica Raine, David Warner and Liam Cunningham in episode 8, Rachael Stirling and her mother Dame Diana Rigg in episode 11, Mark Williams appears in the second and fourth episodes as Rorys father. Alex Kingston returned to the series as her character River Song for Amy and Rorys final episode, richard E. The Tenth Doctor is an incarnation of the Doctor, the protagonist of the BBC science fiction television programme Doctor Who, who is played by David Tennant in three series as well as nine specials. As with previous incarnations of the Doctor, the character has appeared in other Doctor Who spin-offs. In the programmes narrative, the Doctor is a centuries-old Time Lord alien from the planet Gallifrey who travels in time in his TARDIS, frequently with companions. When the Doctor is critically injured beyond repair, he can regenerate his body, in doing so, his physical appearance and personality change. Tennants portrayal of the Doctor is of a charismatic and charming adventurer whose likable. This incarnations companions include working class shop assistant Rose Tyler, medical student Martha Jones, in November 2013, Tennants Doctor was voted The UKs favourite Doctor in a survey held by the Radio Times magazine. Executive producer Russell T Davies revived Doctor Who after a 16-year absence with the premiere of Rose in 2005. Following the BBCs announcement of a series being commissioned, the story broke that Christopher Eccleston. On 16 April 2005, the BBC announced that David Tennant had been selected for the role of the Tenth Doctor and his first appearance in the series was for 20 seconds following the Ninth Doctors regeneration at the end of The Parting of the Ways. His first full episode as the Doctor, barring an appearance in a mini-episode during the 2005 Children in Need show, was the 2005 Christmas Special, The Christmas Invasion. He then appeared in the 2006 series, the second Christmas Special, The Runaway Bride, the 2007 series, the third Christmas Special, Voyage of the Damned, and the 2008 series. Tennant also appears in two animated serials, The Infinite Quest is counted with the series, and Dreamland is counted amongst the 2008–2010 specials. The Doctor complains that his tenth incarnation is not ginger, however, this incarnation was happy to have sideburns and to have more hair than his previous incarnation. He has dark eyes and is perceived by most, including companions and other characters such as his future incarnation as slim. His costume was unveiled on July 27,2005, David Tennant has commented that he would vary the combination of the buttons he fastened on his jacket in different episodes. Tennant thought the look was very geek chic, the Doctor dons a pair of dark tortoise-shell rectangular frame glasses, an affectation borrowed from the Fifth Doctor. He also occasionally sports a pair of Red-Cyan 3D glasses, both as a joke and for practical reasons, in the Christmas special, he is in a comatose state for most of the episode, following his regeneration. After eventually waking up, he defeats the alien Sycorax and saves Earth, in the process, he loses a hand, amongst other 2006 series adventures, the Doctor and Rose save Queen Victoria from a werewolf, resulting in the creation of the anti-alien Torchwood Institute

The Twelfth Doctor is an incarnation of the Doctor, the protagonist of the BBC science fiction television programme Doctor Who. He is portrayed by Scottish actor Peter Capaldi, within the series narrative, the Doctor is a time travelling, humanoid alien from a race known as the Time Lords. Capaldis portrayal of the Doctor is a spiky, brusque, contemplative, Capaldis first full appearance as the Doctor was at the end of the 2013 Christmas special The Time of the Doctor. He is accompanied in the eighth and ninth series by companion Clara Oswald, in the tenth series, he will be accompanied by two new companions, Nardole and Bill Potts. On 30 January 2017, Capaldi announced he would be leaving the programme and he also appeared in an episode of Class, marking the third time the Doctor appeared in a spin-off. Matt Smith, who played the Eleventh Doctor, publicly announced his departure from Doctor Who on 1 June 2013, on 3 August 2013, bookmakers William Hill suspended betting when Capaldi became the five to six favourite to be cast. Capaldis casting was revealed on 4 August during a live broadcast on BBC One, titled Doctor Who Live, the live show was watched by an average of 6.27 million in the UK, and was also simulcast in the United States, Canada and Australia. While Capaldi was the first choice for the role, other actors were approached in case Capaldi should turn the offer down. Ben Stephenson, the BBCs drama commissioner, said that Capaldi was suggested months before the August revelation, Capaldi prepared for the audition by downloading old Doctor Who scripts from the Internet and practising in front of a mirror. He discovered he had given the part during filming for Adrian Hodges The Musketeers in Prague, after missing a call from his agent, Capaldi rang back to be greeted with Hello. Moffat felt that an actor would work best following the youngest actor. He commented, I can absolutely believe that the strange old-young Matt Smith will turn into the strange young-old Peter Capaldi, Capaldi has previously appeared playing other roles in the Doctor Who franchise. He portrayed Lobus Caecilius in the 2008 episode The Fires of Pompeii and John Frobisher in Children of Earth and this situation was alluded to in Deep Breath, when a confused Doctor is reminded of Caecilius when he examines his face in a mirror. In The Girl Who Died, it is explained that the Doctor chose Caecilius face to himself that he is the Doctor. Capaldis casting marks the time an actor has previously appeared in the series and then been cast as an incarnation of the Doctor. Capaldi briefly appears in the 50th anniversary special, Moffat stated that it was his plan from the start that all the Doctors would fly in to save Gallifrey, and he knew there would be a new one at that time. He wrote it before knowing who would be cast, Capaldi filmed his appearance on 3 October 2013, long after principal photography for the special had ended, and the same day he filmed his debut scene for The Time of the Doctor. The British Broadcasting Corporation is a British public service broadcaster. It is headquartered at Broadcasting House in London, the BBC is the worlds oldest national broadcasting organisation and the largest broadcaster in the world by number of employees. It employs over 20,950 staff in total,16,672 of whom are in public sector broadcasting, the total number of staff is 35,402 when part-time, flexible, and fixed contract staff are included. The BBC is established under a Royal Charter and operates under its Agreement with the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. The fee is set by the British Government, agreed by Parliament, and used to fund the BBCs radio, TV, britains first live public broadcast from the Marconi factory in Chelmsford took place in June 1920. It was sponsored by the Daily Mails Lord Northcliffe and featured the famous Australian Soprano Dame Nellie Melba, the Melba broadcast caught the peoples imagination and marked a turning point in the British publics attitude to radio. However, this public enthusiasm was not shared in official circles where such broadcasts were held to interfere with important military and civil communications. By late 1920, pressure from these quarters and uneasiness among the staff of the licensing authority, the General Post Office, was sufficient to lead to a ban on further Chelmsford broadcasts. But by 1922, the GPO had received nearly 100 broadcast licence requests, John Reith, a Scottish Calvinist, was appointed its General Manager in December 1922 a few weeks after the company made its first official broadcast. The company was to be financed by a royalty on the sale of BBC wireless receiving sets from approved manufacturers, to this day, the BBC aims to follow the Reithian directive to inform, educate and entertain. The financial arrangements soon proved inadequate, set sales were disappointing as amateurs made their own receivers and listeners bought rival unlicensed sets. By mid-1923, discussions between the GPO and the BBC had become deadlocked and the Postmaster-General commissioned a review of broadcasting by the Sykes Committee and this was to be followed by a simple 10 shillings licence fee with no royalty once the wireless manufactures protection expired. The BBCs broadcasting monopoly was made explicit for the duration of its current broadcast licence, the BBC was also banned from presenting news bulletins before 19.00, and required to source all news from external wire services. Mid-1925 found the future of broadcasting under further consideration, this time by the Crawford committee, by now the BBC under Reiths leadership had forged a consensus favouring a continuation of the unified broadcasting service, but more money was still required to finance rapid expansion. Wireless manufacturers were anxious to exit the loss making consortium with Reith keen that the BBC be seen as a service rather than a commercial enterprise. The recommendations of the Crawford Committee were published in March the following year and were still under consideration by the GPO when the 1926 general strike broke out in May. The strike temporarily interrupted newspaper production and with restrictions on news bulletins waived the BBC suddenly became the source of news for the duration of the crisis. The crisis placed the BBC in a delicate position, the Government was divided on how to handle the BBC but ended up trusting Reith, whose opposition to the strike mirrored the PMs own

Science fiction first appeared in television programming in the late 1930s, during what is called the Golden Age of Science Fiction. Special effects and other techniques allow creators to present a living visual image of an imaginary world not limited by the constraints of reality. The combination of initial cost and lower maintenance cost pushed producers into building these techniques into the basic concept of a series. The broad term special effects includes all the techniques here, visual effects involve photographic or digital manipulation of the onscreen image, usually done in post-production. Mechanical or physical effects involve props, pyrotechnics, and other methods used during principal photography itself. Some effects involved a combination of techniques, a ray gun might require a pyrotechnic during filming, stunts are another important category of physical effects. In general, all kinds of special effects must be planned during pre-production. Babylon 5 was the first series to use computer-generated imagery, or CGI, for all exterior space scenes, the technology has made this more practical, so that today models are rarely used. In the 1990s, CGI required expensive processors and customized applications, models have been an essential tool in science fiction television since the beginning, when Buck Rogers took flight in spark-scattering spaceships wheeling across a matte backdrop sky. The original Star Trek required an array of models, the USS Enterprise had to be built in several different scales for different needs. Gerry Anderson created a series of using puppets living in a universe of models and miniature sets. ALF depicted an alien living in a family, while Farscape included two puppets as regular characters, in Stargate SG-1, the Asgard characters are puppets in scenes where they are sitting, standing, or lying down. As animation is completely free of the constraints of gravity, momentum, in general, science fiction series are subject to the same financial constraints as other television shows. However, high production costs increase the risk, while limited audiences further complicate the business case for continuing production. Star Trek was the first television series to cost more than $100,000 per episode, while Star Trek and this enabled merchandising such as toy lines, animated cartoon adaptations, and other licensing. Creative settings also often call for broader story arcs than is found in mainstream television. Science fiction television producers will sometimes end a season with a cliffhanger episode to attract viewer interest. Doctor Who spin-offs refers to material created outside of, but related to, the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who. For example, it has become common for a television actor to reprise their character for an audio play. The BBC holds no position on Doctor Who canon, although the spin-offs generally do not intentionally contradict the television series, the various spin-off series do occasionally contradict each other. Novelisations based upon individual Doctor Who serials were first published in the mid-1960s, who in an Exciting Adventure with the Daleks by David Whitaker, a loose adaptation of the shows second serial, The Daleks. The initial three novelisations had been published in various editions both inside and outside the United Kingdom, not all Target novelisations faithfully followed the scripts. John Lucarottis The Massacre completely changed the plot of the source serial, some guide books describe the plot of the novel rather than the original serial due to the fact the original serial is one of the many that were lost. Later novelisations tended to be included as part of the novel series from Virgin. In 1996, BBC Books published a novelisation of the Doctor Who television movie, a one-time return to serial novelisations occurred in 2004 when BBC Books novelised the made-for-Internet adventure, Scream of the Shalka. Several serials remain unnovelised for various reasons, fan-written novelisations of these stories do exist, however. The unnovelised serials are, Resurrection of the Daleks by Eric Saward Revelation of the Daleks by Eric Saward Adams stories were never novelised, Adams would later recycle elements of City of Death and the unbroadcast Shada into his Dirk Gently novels. As for Sawards two Dalek serials, Target Books was unable to come to an agreement which would satisfy both Eric Saward and Terry Nations estate for the novelisations. Virgin tried again at a date and authors were assigned for both books, but again an agreement was not reached. From 1988, Titan Books released script books of Doctor Who serials and this included an unproduced serial, The Masters of Luxor by Anthony Coburn, which would have been the second serial of the programme if it had not been rejected. The story features the Doctor and his companions encountering an ancient civilisation of deactivated robots, there are no plans to novelise episodes from the 2005–present revival of Doctor Who. Scripts for later seasons have not yet published as of 2010. In 2007, Penguin Character Books revived the concept for the spin-off series. As of early 2010, all stories from the series first season, the third-season novelisation, adapting The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith, marked the first appearance of the Doctor in a TV-based novelisation since the 1996 TV movie was adapted. Shada by Douglas Adams was finally released by BBC Books in 2012, the earliest original Doctor Who spin-off fiction appeared in childrens annuals from 1964, and over the years many short stories, novellas and full-length novels have been published

Time Lord

The Time Lords are a fictional, ancient extraterrestrial people in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who, of which the series protagonist, the Doctor, is a member. Time Lords are so named for their command of time travel technology, originally they were described as a powerful and wise race from the planet Gallifrey, from which the Doctor was a renegade, details beyond this were very limited for the first decade of the series. They later became integral to many episodes and stories as their role in the universe developed. In 2013, the 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor concerned this supposed destruction and they can act to manipulate timelines of a wide range of events and individuals, so long as they do not cross back into their own timeline. The Doctor became at times an ally, being appointed their president during his fourth incarnation, with everything ultimately coming from that discussion. In The War Games DVD commentary, Sherwin mentioned that he recalled hearing about the Time Lords at the beginning of the series, but as no-one else remembered this, it might have come out of dreams. Elaborating on this genesis in a 2014 interview in Doctor Who Magazine, Sherwin said of The War Games, It was a case of what shall we do, how can we end this. Lets go back to the beginning and say was a Time Lord, a renegade Time Lord, so if hes going to be called to book lets bring in the Time Lords. Early on in the series, the Doctor was identified as a human being, however, his home planet, in The Time Warrior, the name of the Doctors home planet was revealed on screen for the first time. The nature and history of the Time Lords were gradually revealed as the television programme progressed, the Time Lords are considered one of the oldest and most technologically powerful races in the Doctor Who universe. The small number of beings that are more powerful than the Time Lords include the Osirians and higher powers of the such as the Black and White Guardians. Additionally, The People from the novels had a non-aggression treaty with the Time Lords. In the very distant past, the Time Lords fought a war against the Great Vampires. In some spinoff media, the Time Lords are also allied with less developed Temporal Powers, because of this, holding a trial is a very rare event for the Time Lords. Exceptions to this policy are made only in circumstances when they feel they have to. The Doctor describes himself as the last of his kind and his planet burnt on numerous occasions, as do other individuals. In Fathers Day, the Ninth Doctor remarks that before Time Lords were all gone, in Rise of the Cybermen, the Tenth Doctor mentions, When the Time Lords kept their eye on everything, you could pop between realities, home in time for tea. Gallifrey

Gallifrey is a planet in the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who. It is the home world of the Doctor, The Master. It was located in a star system within the constellation of Kasterborous. It was finally identified by name for the first time in The Time Warrior and it is never definitively stated when the appearances of Gallifrey in the television series take place. As the planet is often reached by means of time travel, Gallifreys position in the revived series was filled in slowly over the first three years of the series run. The planet was not referred to by name after the return in 2005 until the 2006 Christmas special. It was depicted in a flashback in The Sound of Drums in series 3 and it appeared briefly in the seventh series finale, The Name of the Doctor, which shows the moment the First Doctor and Susan stole the TARDIS. The Name of the Doctor presents images of the Time Lord capital, outside the Capitol is a wilderness with its iconic red grass. The Doctors granddaughter Susan first describes her world as having bright, silver-leafed trees. This casts an amber tint on anything outside the city, as seen in The Invasion of Time, however, Gallifreys sky appears blue and Earth-like in The Five Doctors within the isolated Death Zone. And those pathetic little patches of snow were shining white. In Gridlock, the Tenth Doctor echoes Susans description of the now named as Gallifrey and goes further by mentioning the vast mountain ranges with fields of deep red grass. He then elaborates how Gallifreys second sun would rise in the south, inside the Death Zone stands the Tomb of Rassilon, the founder of Time Lord society. Somewhere on Gallifrey there is also an institute called the Academy, the 2013 minisode The Last Day mentions birds as something expected in Gallifreys skies. Gallifrey appeared in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor which aired on November 23,2013, several of the spin-off novels have further information about Gallifrey. Cats Cradle, Times Crucible also mentions edible rodent-like mammals called tafelshrews, for general Time Lord history, see History of the Time Lords. Few details on the history of the planet itself emerge from the series run from 1963–1989. In The End of the World, the Ninth Doctor states that his planet has been destroyed in a war

TARDIS

The TARDIS is a fictional time machine and spacecraft that appears in the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who and its various spin-offs. A TARDIS is a product of the technology of the Time Lords, an extraterrestrial civilisation to which the programmes central character. A properly maintained and piloted TARDIS can transport its occupants to any point in time, the interior of a TARDIS is much larger than its exterior. It can blend in with its surroundings using the ships chameleon circuit, TARDISes also possess a degree of sapience and provide their users with additional tools and abilities including a universal translation system based on telepathy. In the series, the Doctor pilots an apparently unreliable, obsolete TARDIS, in the episode Lets Kill Hitler, it is designated TT Type 40, Mark 3. Its chameleon circuit is broken, leaving it stuck in the shape of a 1960s-style London police box after a visit to London in 1963. The Doctors TARDIS was for most of the series said to have been stolen from the Time Lords home planet, Gallifrey. The unpredictability of the TARDIS short-range guidance has often been a point in the Doctors travels. In The Doctors Wife, the TARDIS reveals that much of this unpredictability was actually intentional on its part in order to get the Doctor where he needed to go as opposed to where he wanted to go. Doctor Who has become so much a part of British popular culture that the shape of the box has become more immediately associated with the TARDIS than with its real-world inspiration. The name TARDIS is a trademark of the British Broadcasting Corporation. When Doctor Who was being developed in 1963, the staff discussed what the Doctors time machine would look like. To keep the design within budget, it was decided to make it resemble a telephone box. The Ninth Doctor explains that if, for example, a TARDIS were to materialise in ancient Rome it might disguise itself as a statue on a plinth. The First Doctor explains that if it were to land in the middle of the Indian Mutiny, within the context of the series, the Doctors TARDIS has a faulty chameleon circuit that keeps it permanently stuck in the police box form. Despite being shown several times trying to repair it, the Doctor claims to have given up the attempt as he has grown accustomed to its appearance. The idea for the police-box disguise came from BBC staff writer Anthony Coburn, in the first episode, An Unearthly Child, the TARDIS is first seen in a 1963 junkyard. It subsequently malfunctions, retaining the police box shape in a prehistoric landscape, the first police box prop to be built for the programme was designed by Peter Brachacki, who worked as designer on the first episode

Regeneration (Doctor Who)

This process allows a Time Lord who is old, wounded or otherwise dying to undergo a transformation into a new physical form and a somewhat different personality. The process has been used eleven times throughout the history of the franchise as a device for introducing a new actor for the role of its main character. The current incarnation of the Doctor is played by Peter Capaldi, Other Time Lords and similar characters have also regenerated, for various reasons, sometimes with change of actors. The concept of regeneration was created in 1966 by the writers of Doctor Who as a method of replacing the leading actor. Producer John Wiles had, following clashes with Hartnell, intended to have the actor replaced in The Celestial Toymaker. Wiles plan was for the character to reappear played by a new actor and this proposal was vetoed by Gerald Savory, the BBCs Head of Serials, which led to Wiles leaving before The Celestial Toymaker was produced. However, it was apparent that it would not be possible for Hartnell to continue for much longer, on 29 July 1966, production concluded on the final episode of The Smugglers, the last serial recorded in the third production block. Script editor Gerry Davis proposed that, since the Doctor had already established as an alien. The process itself was modelled on LSD trips, with the experience being like the hell, at the conclusion of The Tenth Planet, the First Doctor collapses from apparent old age and exhaustion, having commented earlier that his body was wearing a bit thin. Then, before the eyes of his companions Ben and Polly, in The Power of the Daleks, the Second Doctors first story, the Doctor draws an analogy between the renewal and a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. It was not clear whether the renewal was a natural ability of the Doctors as opposed to a process initiated by technology. In Power of the Daleks, the Second Doctor describes his renewal as a function of his TARDIS time machine, stating that without it, couldnt survive. Unlike the previous change, this one is treated as a punishment rather than a process, in The War Games the Doctor protests. In this scene, the change is called regeneration for the first time, however, dialogue within the series itself explicitly includes the First-to-Second rejuvenation when enumerating the Doctors regenerations. The regeneration effect was accomplished during the original run from 1963–1989 primarily through the use of video mixing. Originally, the plan was to have Hartnell collapse at the end of The Tenth Planet with his cloak over his face, which would then be pulled back to reveal Troughton in the next serial. This also meant that the scene could take place with both actors at the conclusion of The Tenth Planet, and Troughton was accordingly signed up to participate. Subsequent regenerations retained essentially the same method, with or without additional video or make-up effects, with the exception of the transitions from the Second to Third, each regeneration was shown on-screen, with the previous incumbent in the role symbolically handing off the character to the next

She is known for the role of Amelia Pond, companion to the Eleventh Doctor and she took part in the upcoming films Jumanji, The Circle, Avengers, Infinity War and its untitled sequel. In 2017, she directed her first feature film Tupperware Party, Gillan was born and raised in Inverness in the Scottish highlands, the only child of Marie and Raymond Gillan, a singer and recording artist. When she turned 16, Gillan moved to Edinburgh and completed an HNC Acting and she moved to London at age 18 to study at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts drama school, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in acting. While studying at Italia Conti, Gillan was scouted by a modelling agency, Gillan has said she would not give up her acting career to return to modelling, stating that she enjoyed modelling but acting was always her main interest and goal. Gillans early television acting career included guest appearances on several series, with her first role being in an episode of Rebus. She appeared in the Channel 4 film Stacked, playing the role of Ginny. Gillan also appeared on TV in a role in a horror project entitled The Well. She appeared in the sixth series in 2011 and the first five episodes of the seventh series in 2012. She reprised the role in an appearance in the 2013 Christmas special The Time of the Doctor. Gillan had appeared in Doctor Who once before in the four episode The Fires of Pompeii in the role of a Soothsayer. Gillan made her first theatre appearance playing the role of Shirley in John Osbornes play Inadmissible Evidence along with Douglas Hodge, the play debuted at the Donmar Warehouse on 16 October 2011. During an interview at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con, Gillan revealed that she would be returning to Doctor Who for its seventh series, on 15 December 2011, it was announced Gillan and Arthur Darvill would be leaving Doctor Who during the seventh series in 2012. In August 2011, it was announced that Gillan would star in an indie Scottish rom-com called Not Another Happy Ending alongside Emun Elliott, filming took place in July 2012, though Elliott was replaced by Stanley Weber. Gillan told journalists that she was happy to be involved in a Scottish production that isnt about drug use or fighting the English, the film premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in June 2013. Thomas Arthur Darvill, known professionally as Arthur Darvill, is an English actor and musician. He is known for playing Rory Williams, one of the Eleventh Doctors companions in the television series Doctor Who, from 2013 to 2014, he appeared in the lead role in the theatre musical Once in the West End and on Broadway. He portrays Rip Hunter in Legends of Tomorrow and she is also known as the puppeteer and voice behind Why Bird from Playdays. Prior to the birth of his sister, Darvill went on some of the tours and his father Nigel played the Hammond organ for artists including Edwin Starr, Ruby Turner, Fine Young Cannibals and UB40. Darvill attended Bromsgrove School in Worcestershire from 1993 to 2000, Darvill joined Stage2 Youth Theatre Company at the age of 10. He was a member from 1991 to 2000 and had a job on CITV in 2000. He left in 2001, founded his own company. At the age of 21, Darvill moved to London with four friends from youth theatre and they moved into a house in White City together. Darvill trained in acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Darvill made his professional stage debut playing condemned criminal Harrison in Edmund Whites Terre Haute, which ran at the Assembly Rooms during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. His performance was praised by Nicholas de Jongh of the Evening Standard, Darvill appeared in Terra Hautes transfer to Trafalgar Studios in 2007. Sarah Jane Smith is a fictional character played by Elisabeth Sladen in the long-running BBC Television science fiction series Doctor Who and two of its spin-offs. After travelling with the Doctor in four seasons of the show they suddenly part ways, Sarah Jane is one of the Doctors longest-serving companions, co-starring in 18 stories with the Third and Fourth incarnations of the Doctor, on the programme from 1973 to 1976. She and robotic dog K-9 appear in the 1981 television pilot K-9, Doctor Who producer Barry Letts offered the part of Sarah Jane to actress April Walker, who accepted the role and was duly contracted by the BBC. During rehearsals for The Time Warrior, it clear to Jon Pertwee. Letts therefore released Walker from her contract, Letts began a second batch of auditions and saw Elisabeth Sladen after a recommendation from fellow BBC producer Bill Slater, who had twice cast the actress recently in separate episodes of Z-Cars. Sladen performed her audition alongside actor Stephen Thorne and after impressing Letts, Pertwee stood behind Sladen and gave a thumbs-up to Letts who then offered her the role. Sarah Jane first appears in the Third Doctor serial The Time Warrior, where she has managed to infiltrate a top secret research facility by posing as her aunt, Lavinia Smith, a famous virologist. After Pertwees departure, Sladen remains following Season 11 finale Planet of the Spiders, in Genesis, Sarah is present at the creation of the Daleks, and meets their creator Davros. Sarah Jane departs in the Season 14 serial The Hand of Fear after the Doctor receives a summons to his planet of Gallifrey. With regards to her characterisation in this period, Sladen described Sarah as a bit of a cardboard cut-out, each week it used to be, Yes Doctor, no Doctor. Following her tenure as du jour companion, Sladen reprised the role of Sarah Jane in a episode for an Earth-based spin-off series, K-9 and Company. In the pilot episode, titled A Girls Best Friend, Sarah Jane receives the robot dog K-9 Mark III as a Christmas present from the Doctor, here, Sarah is reunited with the Third Doctor, and also meets the First, Second and Fifth. The Five Doctors shows that Sarah Jane still owns and is working with K-9, the character made an appearance in the 1993 Children in Need special, Dimensions in Time, wherein various Doctors and companions are teleported to Albert Square as part of a plot by the Rani. Following Russell T Davies 2005 Doctor Who revival, Sladen returned to the show in the Series 2 episode School Reunion, on meeting Sarah Jane, current companion Rose reflects on her future after the Doctor. The success of School Reunion led to the development of The Sarah Jane Adventures, starring Sladen as Sarah Jane, produced by BBC Wales for CBBC. Sarah remarks that since meeting them she is no content to live alone, she discloses she never married after parting from the Doctor. In series one, Sarah learns how to be a mother to Luke, the while strengthening her friendship with teenage neighbour Maria, along with Luke and his friend Clyde Langer they defeat and repel various threats to the contemporary Earth. Amongst these threats, series one introduces the Trickster, a cosmic being who makes alterations to the timeline to cause chaos and destruction, he becomes a recurring adversary for Sarah Jane

Elisabeth Clara Heath-Sladen was an English actress best known for her role as Sarah Jane Smith in the British television series Doctor Who. Sladen was interested in ballet and theatre from childhood, and began to appear on stage in the mid-1960s and she moved to London in 1970 and an appearance in the police drama Z-Cars led to her being selected for a part in Doctor Who. She stayed as a regular cast member alongside Pertwee and Baker until 1976 and she subsequently starred in other roles on both television and radio, before semi-retiring to bring up a family in the mid-1980s. She returned to the eye in the 2000s with more Doctor Who related appearances. The show earned the Royal Television Society 2010 award for Best Childrens Drama and she also made regular guest appearances on the main television series, and provided voice-over commentaries for its releases to DVD. Sladen died of cancer on 19 April 2011 and her death made national and international news headlines, and major television stations and newspapers paid her tribute. Elisabeth Clara Heath-Sladen was born 1 February 1946 in Liverpool, England, Sladen was the only child of Tom Sladen, who fought in the First World War and served in the Home Guard during the Second World War, and Gladys. She developed an interest in performing at an age, beginning dance lessons when she was five. She was a primary school contemporary of future politician Edwina Currie and she went on to secondary school and attended Aigburth Vale High School for Girls. Sladen attended the Elliott-Clarke Drama School, in 1965, she made her first film appearance in Ferry Cross the Mersey as an uncredited extra. Sladen then joined the Hillbark Players, for their production of Much Ado About Nothing, playing Hero. After two years at school, Sladen began work at the Liverpool Playhouse repertory company as an assistant stage manager. Her first stage appearance at the Playhouse was as a maid in Twelfth Night, a few months later, she played a corpse in The Physicists. However, she was scolded for giggling on stage due to her future husband Brian Miller whispering the words Respiration nil, Aston Villa two in her ear while he was playing a doctor. Sladen was such a good assistant stage manager that she did not get acting roles. An earlier interview indicated that she deliberately made mistakes on several occasions, as a result, she began to get on-stage roles again. The Sarah Jane Adventures is a British science fiction television programme, that was produced by BBC Cymru Wales for CBBC, created by Russell T Davies starring Elisabeth Sladen. The programme is a spin-off of the long-running BBC science fiction programme Doctor Who and is aimed at an audience than Doctor Who. It focuses on the adventures of Sarah Jane Smith, an investigative journalist who, as a woman, had numerous adventures across time. The series debuted on BBC One with a 60-minute special, Invasion of the Bane, on 1 January 2007 and it was nominated for a British Academy Childrens Award in 2008 in the Drama category, and for a BAFTA Cymru in 2009 in the Childrens Drama category. The programme won a Royal Television Society 2010 award for Best Childrens Drama, a full series of ten 25-minute episodes began on 24 September 2007. The first series consisted of five stories, and a second series, comprising six two-part stories. A third series, once again comprising six two-part stories to make a total of episodes, with Russell T Davies serving as executive producer. The fourth series was aired from 11 October 2010, an episode of another spin-off series, Sarah Janes Alien Files, was shown immediately after each of the first episodes of the stories. Filming for three of six two-part serials planned for the series was completed prior to Elisabeth Sladens death on 19 April 2011. Although some UK media, including the Sun, reported in early May 2011 that production of the series was to continue, the fifth series was broadcast starting 3 October 2011 on Mondays and Tuesdays. It finished just two later on 18 October 2011. In 2006, Childrens BBC expressed an interest in producing a Doctor Who spin-off and their initial idea was a drama based on the idea of a young Doctor Who, but Russell T Davies vetoed this. Somehow, the idea of a fourteen year old Doctor, on Gallifrey inventing sonic screwdrivers, takes away from the mystery and intrigue of who he is and he suggested instead a series based on the Doctors former companion Sarah Jane Smith. The character of Sarah Jane Smith, played by Sladen, appeared in Doctor Who from 1973 to 1976, alongside Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor and later Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor. A pilot episode for another Doctor Who spin-off series, K-9 and Company, made in 1981, featured Sarah Jane and the robot dog K-9, however, Sarah Jane is frequently voted the most popular Doctor Who companion by both Doctor Who fans and members of the general public. The fact that a Sarah Jane series was being developed was first confirmed in the BBCs in-house newsletter, Ariel and these early rumours were associated with the working title Sarah Jane Investigates. K-9s only appearances in the shows first two series were a cameo in the special and an appearance in the last episode of the first series. Steven William Moffat, OBE is a Scottish television writer and producer, known for his work as showrunner, writer and producer of the British television series Doctor Who and Sherlock. Moffats first television work was the teen drama series Press Gang, in between the two relationship-centred shows, he wrote Chalk, a sitcom set in a comprehensive school inspired by his own experience as an English teacher. A lifelong fan of Doctor Who, Moffats first work on the series was the script of the parody episode The Curse of Fatal Death in 1999 and he then wrote six episodes of the revived series which began in 2005. In 2010 he replaced Russell T Davies as showrunner, lead writer, the same year, he created Sherlock along with Mark Gatiss. In January 2016, it was announced that Moffat would step down from being showrunner of Doctor Who after the spring 2017 season finale, and he also co-wrote Steven Spielbergs The Adventures of Tintin, The Secret of the Unicorn in 2011. Moffat has won awards, mainly for Doctor Who and Sherlock. Moffat was born in Paisley, Scotland, where he attended Camphill High School and he studied at the University of Glasgow, where he was involved with the student television station, GUST. After gaining an MA degree in English from Glasgow, he worked as a teacher for three and a half years at Cowdenknowes High School, Greenock, in the 1980s he wrote a play entitled War Zones and a musical called Knifer. The producers asked for a script, to which Bill Moffat agreed on condition his son write it. Producer Sandra Hastie said that it was the best ever first script that she had read, the resulting series was titled Press Gang, starring Julia Sawalha and Dexter Fletcher, and ran for five series on ITV between 1989 and 1993, with Moffat writing all forty-three episodes. The programme won a BAFTA award in its second series, during production of the second series of Press Gang, Moffat was experiencing an unhappy personal life as a result of the break-up of his first marriage. The producer was secretly phoning his friends at home to check on his state and his wifes new lover was represented in the episode The Big Finish. by the character Brian Magboy, a name inspired by Brian, Maggies boy. Moffat brought in the character so that all sorts of things would happen to him. By 1990, Moffat had written two series of Press Gang, but the high cost along with organisational changes at backers Central Independent Television cast its future in doubt. Inspired by his working in education, Moffats initial proposal was a programme similar to what would become Chalk. During the pitch meeting at the Groucho Club, Ptaszynski realised that Moffat was talking passionately about his impending divorce, taking Ptaszynskis advice, Moffats new idea was about a sitcom writer whose wife leaves him. Moffat wrote two series of Joking Apart, which was directed by Bob Spiers, and starred Robert Bathurst, the show won the Bronze Rose of Montreux and was entered for the Emmys. The department is the worlds largest broadcast news organisation and generates about 120 hours of radio and television output each day, the service maintains 50 foreign news bureaux with more than 250 correspondents around the world. James Harding has been Director of News and Current Affairs since April 2013, the departments annual budget is in excess of £350 million, it has 3,500 staff,2,000 of whom are journalists. BBC News domestic, global and online news divisions are housed within the largest live newsroom in Europe, parliamentary coverage is produced and broadcast from studios in Millbank in London. Through the BBC English Regions, the BBC also has regional centres across England, as well as national news centres in Northern Ireland, Scotland, all nations and English regions produce their own local news programmes and other current affairs and sport programmes. As with all media outlets, though, it has been accused of political bias from across the political spectrum. The British Broadcasting Company broadcast its first radio bulletin from radio station 2LO on 14 November 1922, on Easter weekend in 1930, this reliance on newspaper wire services left the radio news service with no information to report. The BBC gradually gained the right to edit the copy and, in 1934, however, it could not broadcast news before 6 PM until World War II. Gaumont British and Movietone cinema newsreels had been broadcast on the TV service since 1936, a weekly Childrens Newsreel was inaugurated on 23 April 1950, to around 350,000 receivers. The network began simulcasting its radio news on television in 1946, televised bulletins began on 5 July 1954, broadcast from leased studios within Alexandra Palace in London. The publics interest in television and live events was stimulated by Elizabeth IIs coronation in 1953 and it is estimated that up to 27 million people viewed the programme in the UK, overtaking radios audience of 12 million for the first time. Those live pictures were fed from 21 cameras in central London to Alexandra Palace for transmission and that year, there were around two million TV Licences held in the UK, rising to over three million the following year, and four and a half million by 1955. This was then followed by the customary Television Newsreel with a commentary by John Snagge. It was revealed that this had been due to producers fearing a newsreader with visible facial movements would distract the viewer from the story. On-screen newsreaders were finally introduced a year later in 1955 – Kenneth Kendall, Robert Dougall, mainstream television production had started to move out of Alexandra Palace in 1950 to larger premises – mainly at Lime Grove Studios in Shepherds Bush, west London – taking Current Affairs with it. It was from here that the first Panorama, a new programme, was transmitted on 11 November 1953. Bad Wolf is the twelfth episode of the revived first series of the British science fiction television series Doctor Who, which was first broadcast on 11 June 2005. The TARDIS crew find themselves trapped in the Gamestation, also known as Satellite 5, however, when Rose is taken away, the Doctor realises his deadliest enemies have returned en masse. It is the first of a two-part story, the concluding episode, The Parting of the Ways, was first broadcast on 18 June 2005. The Doctor, Rose, and Jack Harkness find themselves separated, all three find out that the shows are more fatal than their twenty-first century counterparts. On The Weakest Link and Big Brother, losing contestants are disintegrated, on What Not to Wear, participants undergo brutal cosmetic surgery. The Doctor escapes from his show by overriding the termination chamber and they discover that they are on Satellite Five, which the Doctor previously visited in The Long Game. It has been renamed the Game Station and is now under the control of the Badwolf Corporation, Lynda explains that 100 years ago, Satellite Five stopped broadcasting and humanity became confused and lost. The Doctor, Jack, and Lynda search for Rose and they find her just as she loses the final round of The Weakest Link and is promptly disintegrated. They are arrested, but escape their capture and travel to the room on Floor 500. There they meet the Controller, a cybernetic human, the Controller uses the cover of a solar flare to speak directly to the Doctor, telling him that her masters cannot hear her during the flare. The Controller used a transmat to hide the Doctor and his companions in the games as her masters do not watch them, the solar flare ends before she can tell the Doctor who is controlling her. Jack finds the TARDIS hidden in an area, which he uses to figure out that contest losers are not actually disintegrated but transmatted off of the station. The Controller begins giving the Doctor the coordinates that the leads to. The Controller disappears in a beam and wakes up on a spaceship. Rose wakes up on the floor of a spaceship and is horrified to see a Dalek approaching her, the Doctor and Jack discover a signal coming from the station that is hiding something at the edge of the solar system. They cancel the signal and reveal a fleet of Dalek spaceships, the Daleks open a communication channel to the Doctor, threatening to kill Rose if he interferes. The Doctor refuses to back down and vows to rescue Rose, the episode ends with the Daleks about to invade Satellite Five. The Parting of the Ways is the thirteenth episode of the revamped first series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who, which was first broadcast on 18 June 2005. It was the episode of the two-part story that featured Christopher Eccleston making his last appearance as the Ninth Doctor. This is also the last episode to feature Jack Harkness as a companion on Doctor Who. Jack would appear as a guest companion in the Series 3 finale Utopia, The Sound of Drums and Last of the Time Lords, the first part, Bad Wolf, was broadcast on 11 June. The episode opens with the Daleks questioning Rose on what the Doctor will do next, the Doctor uses the extrapolator on the TARDIS to generate a protective shield around them as he materialises around Rose and a Dalek. Jack destroys the Dalek and they exit the TARDIS to speak to the Daleks, the Doctor is surprised to see the Dalek Emperor in command, and even more surprised when the Emperor describes himself as a god. The Doctor observes that the Daleks have gained human traits and emotions from this process and have become deadlier than ever, the Doctor, Rose, and Jack use the TARDIS to return to the Game Station and prepare for an imminent attack. Jack uses the extrapolator to shield the top six floors of the station, the Doctor attempts to create a delta wave generator from the equipment on the Game Station. The delta wave will kill anything in its path, but needs time to charge up, the Doctor sends Rose into the TARDIS, and while she is inside he uses his sonic screwdriver to direct the TARDIS to return her to her home time. The Doctor appears to her via a message and explains that he sent her home for her safety. The Daleks begin to invade the Station, easily making it past the defences, the Emperor contacts the Doctor and taunts him about the delta wave, revealing that he knows it will not only kill the Daleks but most of Earth as well. The Doctor tells him that humanity will survive in some form, the TARDIS arrives back in London, and Mickey and Jackie are drawn to the noise of its engines. They rush to meet Rose, who is heartbroken at being sent away from the Doctor, Rose begins to notice the words Bad Wolf all around the area where the TARDIS has landed, and realises that it is a message rather than a warning. She enlists Mickey to help her try and open the Heart of the TARDIS, Rose tells Jackie that she met her late father Pete, and that she is the young woman who was with him when he died. Jackie decides to help by borrowing a large truck from a friend, with the truck pulling the panel on the console snaps open and Rose is bathed in the light of the TARDIS. The TARDIS doors slam on Mickey and Jackie as they try to enter, back on the Game Station, the Daleks force their way to Floor 500, killing Jack and Lynda in the process. They file into the room as the Doctor is about to fire the delta wave. The Emperor again taunts the Doctor, who cannot bring himself to kill so many innocent people just to destroy the Daleks, the Emperor declares the Doctor a coward and orders him to be exterminated, but before the Daleks can kill him, the TARDIS materialises

A bookmaker, bookie, or turf accountant is an organization that, or a person who, takes bets on sporting and other events at agreed-upon odds. When a large bet comes in, a bookmaker may also try to lay off the risk by buying bets from other bookmakers. Bookmakers do not generally attempt to make money from the bets themselves but rather by acting as market makers and their working methods are similar to that of an actuary, who does a similar balancing of financial outcomes of events for the assurance and insurance industries. Depending on jurisdiction, bookmaking may be legal or illegal, and is often regulated, however, gambling debts were unenforceable under English law until the Gambling Act 2005. Many bookmakers are members of IBAS, an industry organisation used to settle disputes, bookmaking is generally illegal in the United States, with Nevada being a notable exception due to the influence of Las Vegas. In some countries, such as Singapore, Sweden, Canada, and Japan, in Canada, this is part of the lottery program and is known as Sport Select. Following the Gaming Act 1845, the only gambling allowed in the United Kingdom was at race tracks, the introduction of special excursion trains meant that all classes of society could attend the new racecourses opening across the country. Cash concentrated towards the bookmakers who employed bodyguards against protection gangs operating within the vast crowds, in 1961, Harold Macmillans Conservative government legalised betting shops, with tough measures enacted to ensure that bookmakers remained honest. A large industry has grown since, at one time, there were over 15,000 betting shops. Now, through consolidation, they have reduced to between 9,100 and 9,200 in 2013. The group of the largest bookmakers in the country, known as the Big Three, comprises William Hill, Ladbrokes, improved TV coverage and the modernisation of the law have allowed betting in shops and casinos in most countries. A so-called super-casino had been planned for construction in Manchester, although online gambling first started in 1994 when the licensing authority of Antigua and Barbuda passed the Free Trade & Processes Act, bookmakers did not get involved until 2001. They were forced to act when research at the time there were eight million online players worldwide. The main websites require bets to be from countries where Internet gambling is allowed, some small bookmakers and startups purchase software from specialized white label solution providers. Controversially, the explosion in Internet gambling is being linked to a rise in gambling addiction, according to the UKs help and advice organizations for addicts, GamCare and Gamblers Anonymous. These online exchange markets operate a market index of prices near but usually not at 100% competitiveness, true wholesale odds are odds that operate at 100% of probabilistic outcomes. Betting exchanges compete with the traditional bookmaker, however, traditionally, arbitrage has always been possible by backing all outcomes with bookmakers, as opposed to laying an outcome on an exchange. David Mark Morrissey is an English actor, director, producer and screenwriter. At the age of 18, he was cast in the television series One Summer, after making One Summer, Morrissey attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, then acted with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre for four years. Throughout the 1990s, Morrissey often portrayed policemen and soldiers, though he took roles such as Bradley Headstone in Our Mutual Friend and Christopher Finzi in Hilary. The former earned him a Best Actor nomination at the British Academy Television Awards, in the years following those films, he had roles in Sense and Sensibility, Red Riding, Nowhere Boy and Centurion and produced and starred in the crime drama Thorne. Morrissey returned to the stage in 2008 for a run of Neil LaButes In a Dark Dark House and he then starred in the British crime film Blitz, playing a morally dubious reporter in contact with the eponymous cop killer. The following year, he portrayed the Governor in AMC television series The Walking Dead as a regular in the third and fourth seasons. Morrissey has directed films and the television dramas Sweet Revenge. His feature debut, Dont Worry About Me, premiered at the 2009 London Film Festival and was broadcast on BBC television in March 2010, in 2014 he appeared in The 7.39, another television drama. Morrissey was awarded a doctorate by Edge Hill University in July 2016. Morrissey was born in the Kensington area of Liverpool, the son of Joe, a cobbler, and Joan and he was their fourth child, following brothers Tony and Paul, and sister Karen Lane. The family lived at 45 Seldon Street, in the Kensington district of Liverpool, for National Museums Liverpools Eight Hundred Lives project, Morrissey wrote that the house had been in his family since around the turn of the 20th century. His grandmother had been married there and his mother was born there, in 1971, the family moved to a larger, modern house on the new estates at Knotty Ash, and Seldon Street was later demolished. As a child, Morrissey was greatly interested in film, television, after seeing a broadcast of Kes on television, he decided to become an actor. Keller left the school soon after, leaving Morrissey without encouragement and his secondary school, De La Salle School, had no drama classes and was the sort of place where Morrissey thought the fear of bullying dissuaded pupils from participating in lessons. On the advice of a cousin, Morrissey joined the Everyman Youth Theatre, for the first couple of weeks, he was quite shy and did not join in the workshops. When he eventually participated, he appeared in the theatres production of Fighting Chance. He went to the theatre on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, by the age of 14, Morrissey was one of two youth theatre members who sat on the board of the Everyman Theatre. During its original airing, the episode had an audience of 13.1 million viewers and was the second-most-watched programme of Christmas Day 2008. In the episode, the Doctor visits Victorian era London during Christmas, the Cybermen return in this episode, following their appearance in the two-part finale of series 2 in 2006, Army of Ghosts/Doomsday. David Tennant stars as the Tenth Doctor with companions Jackson Lake, the Doctor lands his TARDIS in London on Christmas Eve,1851. Overhearing cries for help, he encounters a man calling himself The Doctor and his companion Rosita, the Doctor, in talking to the man, comes to believe he may be a future incarnation of himself, who is suffering from amnesia. The man, dubbed the Next Doctor, takes the Doctor to a house of a recently deceased reverend, believing him tied to a series of disappearances around London. Inside, they discover a pair of Cybermen data-storage infostamps, which the Next Doctor recalls holding the night that he lost his memories. The two are attacked by Cybermen and the Doctor attempts to fight them off with a cutlass, the two Doctors regroup with Rosita at the Next Doctors base, where the Next Doctor claims his TARDIS is located. The Doctor and Rosita enter a complex to find numerous children, pulled from workhouses around the city. They encounter the bitter Miss Mercy Hartigan, the Cybermens human ally that has brought the children to them for labour. The Doctor attempts to use a corrupted infostamp to overload the Cybermens systems, but they instead repair it and identify the Doctor as their long-time foe, Jackson suddenly arrives, armed with several more infostamps which he uses to distract the Cybermen long enough for the three to escape. The Cybermen turn on Miss Hartigan, converting her into the controller for the Cyberking and she tries to protest, saying that the Cybermen promised her she would never be converted, but the Cyberleader claims That was designated a lie. Jackson explains to the Doctor how he has started recovering his memories, the Doctor considers that Jacksons home may be close to the Cybermens base, and discovers a second entrance there. Within the complex, as the Cyberking starts to rise to the city, when she refuses, the Doctor uses the infostamps to sever her connection to the Cyberking, exposing her to the raw emotion of what she has done. Enraged by the actions the Cybermen forced her to undertake, the emotional feedback destroys both the Cybermen and Miss Hartigan. As the Cyberking starts to topple, the Doctor uses the Dimensional Vault to draw both it and the remnants of the Cybermen into the Time Vortex, saving London, the crowds of people below, rallied by a speech by Jackson, cheer and applaud the Doctor. In the aftermath, Jackson thanks the Doctor for what he has done and is allowed to see the interior of the true TARDIS and he then offers the Doctor a place at Christmas dinner. The Doctor initially refuses the offer, but is convinced when Jackson becomes more emphatic, before they depart, Jackson enquires after the Doctors many companions, and the Doctor replies that in the end. they break my heart, they move on, and he is left alone. The Third Doctor is an incarnation of the Doctor, the protagonist of the BBC science fiction television series Doctor Who. He was portrayed by actor Jon Pertwee, within the series narrative, the Doctor is a centuries-old Time Lord alien from the planet Gallifrey who travels in time and space in his TARDIS, frequently with companions. Within the story, the Third Doctor came into existence as part of a punishment from his own race, the Time Lords, eventually, this restriction is lifted and the Third Doctor embarks on more traditional time travel and space exploration stories. His final companion was intrepid journalist Sarah Jane Smith, who would go on to become the Doctors longest-serving companion, the Third Doctor was a suave, dapper, technologically oriented, and authoritative man of action who practised Venusian Aikido. A keen scientist, he maintained a laboratory at UNIT where he enjoyed working on gadgets in his TARDIS, in his spare time, he was fond of motoring, handing all manner of vehicles. He also maintained a vessel that fans nicknamed the Whomobile. Even though he developed a fondness for Earthlings with whom he worked and his courageousness could easily turn to waspish indignation, it is thus no surprise that a common catchphrase of his was, Now listen to me. In general, this incarnation of the Doctor was more daring than the previous two and was the first to confront an enemy physically if cornered. He only used his fighting skills if he had no alternative, the Third Doctor was a skilled diplomat and linguist, as well as having a penchant for disguises. Through the first two seasons, he wore a flowing, red-lined cape over a black smoking jacket. Beginning in the 1971 season, when the look was refashioned by Ken Trew, Pertwee wore a red jacket, in the final two seasons, the colour scheme changed from story to story, though the basic look was maintained. In his first episode, when the Doctor evades capture by taking a shower, the Third Doctor stories were the first to be broadcast in colour. The early ones were set on Earth due to cost constraints on the series, to explain this, the Second Doctor was banished to Earth by his race the Time Lords, and forced to regenerate. On Earth he worked with the Brigadier and the rest of the UNIT team, however, as his tenure progressed he had reasons to leave Earth, on occasions being sent on missions by the Time Lords. Eventually, after his defeat of the renegade Omega in The Three Doctors he was granted freedom by the Time Lords in gratitude for saving Gallifrey. The Third Doctors era introduced many of the Doctors more memorable adversaries, the Third Doctor was the only one from the classic series not to have a story featuring the Cybermen, but he did eventually encounter them during The Five Doctors. A catchphrase used during the Third Doctors era was reverse the polarity of the neutron flow, the phrase was Pertwees way of dealing with the technobabble that he was required to speak as the Doctor

John Devon Roland Jon Pertwee was an English actor, entertainer and cabaret performer. Pertwee is most known for starring as the Third Doctor in the science-fiction series Doctor Who between 1970 and 1974, Pertwee also spent 18 years playing Chief petty officer Pertwee in The Navy Lark on BBC Radio. He later played the character in the series Worzel Gummidge from 1979 to 1981. As an actor, Pertwee appeared in comedy roles and was once described as having rubbery features. Earlier in his career, Pertwee had worked as a comedian, performed at the Glasgow Empire Theatre and shared a bill with Max Wall. Towards the end of his life, he performed to audiences in a show called Who Is Jon Pertwee. Born in Chelsea, London, and having Huguenot ancestry, Jon was the son of noted screenwriter and actor Roland Pertwee, pertwee’s mother, Avice Scholtz, separated from his father Roland when Pertwee was young. His father remarried, and his mother found a new partner, avice’s sister Daphne married Captain Philip Cecil Clowes and became the mother of Pertwees cousin, the writer St. John Legh Clowes. The actor Henry Ainley, a friend of his father, was his godfather. Coincidentally, Ainleys son Anthony appeared as The Master – a renegade Time Lord who was The Doctors greatest enemy – alongside Pertwee in the 1983 Doctor Who anniversary story The Five Doctors. His first marriage was in 1955, to Jean Marsh, whom he divorced in 1960, later that year he married Ingeborg Rhoesa. Together they had two children, both of whom were to actors, a daughter, Dariel, in 1961. He was also accused of writing graffiti about the tutors on the lavatory walls, during the Second World War, Pertwee spent six years in the Royal Navy. He was a member of HMS Hood and was transferred off the ship for officer training shortly before she was sunk by the German battleship Bismarck, losing all. In an interview conducted in 1994, he said, I did all sorts, teaching commandos how to use escapology equipment, compasses in brass buttons, secret maps in white cotton handkerchiefs, pipes you could smoke that also fired a.22 bullet. During his time in the Navy, Pertwee woke up one morning after a night out while in port to find a tattoo of a cobra on his right arm. On 15 November 1948, at the Wood Green Empire, he was billed as The Most Versatile Voice in Radio – Jon Pertwee from the Radio Shows Merry-go-Round and Up the Pole. Russell George Tovey is an English actor with numerous television, film and stage credits. Tovey is best known for playing the role of a werewolf, currently, he stars as Harry Doyle in the drama-thriller series Quantico on the ABC network. Tovey is the younger of two children, born to Carole Haynes and George Tovey who run a Romford-based coach service taking passengers from Essex to Gatwick Airport, Tovey has an older brother, Daniel. He grew up in Billericay, Essex, and he attended Harold Court School in Harold Wood, as a boy, Tovey said he was an avid collector of various things and prone to participating in fads. His parents supported his efforts, taking him to archeological digs and museums, buying him a metal detector, and going to conventions for mineralologists. For a time he wanted to be a teacher, but after seeing Dead Poets Society, The Goonies. For a time during his teens, he worked as a assistant in Billericays Kings Head pub. Tovey began his career as a child actor and he joined a local drama club, and garnered the attention of a talent agent. He began acting when he was 11 years old and he worked so steadily and missed so much school that his father suggested his acting career be cut back, but his mother convinced his father to let their son continue. His TV career started in 1994, when he was cast in Mud and he left high school at the age of 16, and started a BTEC in performing arts at Barking College. He was expelled after a year for refusing a role in the play in favour of a paying acting job. He acted in plays in Chichester under the direction of Debra Gillett and he met Marber through Gillett, and Marber cast him in the play Howard Katz at the National Theatre. He also performed in His Girl Friday and His Dark Materials there and he originally auditioned for the role of Crowther but agreed to act the part of Rudge after Bennett promised to beef up the role. Insecure because he had not attended drama school like many of his peers, he enrolled in numerous workshops, in spring 2007, Tovey had a recurring role in BBC Three comedy Rob Brydons Annually Retentive, playing Robs producer, Ben. He played Midshipman Alonso Frame, in 2007 Doctor Who Christmas Special Voyage of the Damned, Tovey reprised his role as Midshipman Alonso Frame in the 2009-10 Doctor Who Christmas special, The End of Time. Tovey played werewolf George Sands, one of three housemates in the drama Being Human. The pilot premiered on BBC Three on 18 February 2008, a six-part series was commissioned with the first episode broadcast on 25 January 2009. Tovey left the regular cast of the show at the start of the season on 5 February 2012

Voyage of the Damned is an episode of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who. First broadcast on 25 December 2007, it is 72 minutes long, the ships captain, Hardaker, sabotages the ship shortly after the Titanics collision with the TARDIS. The Doctor works with a waitress named Astrid Peth to prevent an imminent collision with Earth, the episode features the only performance in Doctor Who by the Australian singer and actress Kylie Minogue. Executive producer and writer Russell T Davies described her casting as an exceptional case. It was the second most-watched programme of 2007, beaten only by the episode of EastEnders which aired immediately after it, critical opinion about the episode was divided, the writing and Minogues performance were both praised and criticised. The episode opens immediately following the events of Time Crash, with the bow of the Titanic crashing into the TARDIS, the Doctor repairs the damage before landing the TARDIS on the ship. He discovers its not the famed RMS Titanic, but instead is a starliner hailing from the planet Sto, the Titanic is orbiting present day Earth to observe the traditions of primitive cultures, specifically Christmas. The Doctor dons a tuxedo and joins the reception on board, the Doctor convinces Astrid to join him on a brief excursion to the surface of Earth. They are accompanied by married couple Morvin and Foon Van Hoff, a Zocci named Bannakaffalatta, while on Earth, specifically a commercial district of London, the Doctor notes that London seems abandoned, and questions a man in a newspaper stand about it. The man, Wilfred Mott, tells the Doctor that most people have left London because of the two years of alien activity in London on Christmas. Back on the Titanic, Captain Hardaker dismisses the ships officers from the bridge, citing regulations, that require at least two officers remain on the bridge at all times, Midshipman Alonso Frame stays. After the group returns from their excursion, Hardaker drops the vessels protective shielding and this causes nearby meteors to be pulled toward the ship on a collision course. Midshipman Frame attempts to reactivate the shields but is shot by Hardaker as the meteors collide with the ship, the collision causes hull breaches, most of the 2,000 passengers and staff are killed, and the vessel begins plunging toward the Earth. The Doctor makes contact with the wounded Midshipman Frame, who stabilises, Morvin falls off of a ledge into the ships engine, and the rest of the group are surrounded by Angel Hosts. Bannakaffalatta reveals that he is a cyborg, and uses his internal EMP device to disable the Hosts, the EMP burst drains the Zoccis power cells and he dies. Mr. Copper takes the EMP device, saying if they can manage to recharge it. A lone Angel Host attacks them again, and Foon ties herself to it, the Doctor separates from the rest and attempts to reach Deck 31, where he hopes to find the controls for the Heavenly Hosts. He convinces the Hosts that he is a stowaway - neither passenger nor crew and thus not in the Hosts kill mandate -, Max explains that he planned the Titanics inevitable collision with Earth to bankrupt the company that voted him out

His notable television work includes the drama show State of Play, the adult comedy-drama Shameless, besides screen acting, McAvoy has performed in several West End productions, receiving three nominations for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor. Since then, he is notable for playing the young Professor Charles Xavier in the 2011 superhero film X-Men, First Class, McAvoy starred in the 2013 crime comedy-drama film Filth for which he won Best Actor in the British Independent Film Awards. In 2017, he portrayed Kevin, a man with 23 personalities in his body, in M. Night Shyamalans Split, McAvoy was born in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of Elizabeth, a psychiatric nurse, and James McAvoy, Sr. a builder. He was brought up as a Roman Catholic and his parents divorced when he was seven. His mother lived with them intermittently, the actor has a sister, Joy, and a younger half-brother, Donald. McAvoy has not been in contact with his father since childhood and he attended St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary in Jordanhill, Glasgow, a Catholic school, and briefly considered joining the Catholic priesthood. In a 2006 interview, McAvoy said that he considered becoming a priest as a child because it seemed to be a way to explore the world via missionary work, during his education, he worked at a local bakery. McAvoys acting debut came at the age of 15 in The Near Room and he later admitted that he was not very interested in acting when joining the movie, but was inspired to study the craft after developing feelings for his co-star, Alana Brady. He continued to act while still a member of PACE Youth Theatre, McAvoy eventually graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in 2000. Throughout the early 2000s, he made guest appearances in television shows, in 2001, McAvoys performance as a gay hustler in the play Out in the Open impressed director Joe Wright so much that Wright began offering McAvoy parts in his films. Peter Davison is an English actor. His roles include Tristan Farnon in the version of James Herriots All Creatures Great and Small, and the fifth incarnation of the Doctor in Doctor Who. The family then moved to Knaphill in Surrey, during this time, Davison was a member of an amateur theatre company called the Byfleet Players. Davison studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama and his first job was as an actor and assistant stage manager at the Nottingham Playhouse. He chose the stage name Peter Davison to avoid confusion with the actor and director Peter Moffatt, in 1973, aged 21, Davison married Diane Russell. Davison portrayed an alien named Elmer, who arrives on Earth along with his sister and his mother, in the mid-1970s, during a lull in his acting career, Davison spent 18 months working in a tax office in Twickenham. In 1976, he was offered a prominent role in the 13-segment TV miniseries Love for Lydia opposite a young Jeremy Irons, in 1978, Davisons performance as the youthfully mischievous Tristan Farnon in All Creatures Great and Small made him a household name. I dont know how much it changed my life and it creeps up on you really. You become used to it quickly, I think, I wasnt aware of it suddenly changing my life, although I had a bit more money to spend on rubbish. I bought a house, but the money was rubbish because I was a BBC newcomer, though money was very good. I remember after the third series I bought a car, which was a Renault 18, I thought it was pretty flash, and I went to this garage to fill up with petrol, and the guy said, Arent you that bloke off the vet series. I said yes I was, and he said, Why are you driving that piece of shit. Davison and his wife composed and performed the theme tunes to Button Moon, a programme broadcast in the 1980s, and Mixed Blessings. Davison subsequently appeared alongside Dickinson as the Dish of the Day in the version of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy in 1981. The producers considered it humorous for a known for playing a veterinary surgeon to appear as a cow. The couple have a daughter, Georgia Moffett, born in 1984, Davison and Dickinson divorced in 1994. Davison also has two sons, Louis born 1999, and Joel born 2001, by actress and writer Elizabeth Morton, Davison has also appeared in several British sitcoms, including Holding the Fort and Sink or Swim, as well as appearing in dramatic roles. The Fifth Doctor is an incarnation of the Doctor, the protagonist of the BBC science fiction television series Doctor Who. He is portrayed by Peter Davison, within the series narrative, the Doctor is a centuries-old Time Lord alien from the planet Gallifrey who travels in time and space in his TARDIS, frequently with companions. When the Doctor is critically injured, he can regenerate his body, in doing so, his physical appearance, Davison portrays the fifth such incarnation, who has a vulnerable side and a tendency towards indecisiveness, dressed as a boyish Edwardian cricketer. He travelled with a host of companions, including boy genius Adric, alien aristocrat Nyssa and Australian flight attendant Tegan Jovanka and he also shared later adventures alongside devious schoolboy Vislor Turlough and American college student Peri Brown. Peter Davison was chosen due to his acclaimed role as Tristan Farnon in the BBC series All Creatures Great. The Fifth Doctors era was notable for a back to the attitude, in which silly humour was kept to a minimum. It was, at times, a darker and grittier series, in part for seeing the death of one of his companions, Adric. It was also notable for the reintroduction of many of the Time Lords enemies, such as the Master, Cybermen, Omega, the Black and White Guardians, and the Silurians. The regeneration was difficult, and nearly failed, with the Doctor briefly taking on personality aspects from his four previous incarnations, after recovering in the fictional city Castrovalva, he continued his travels with Adric, Tegan Jovanka and Nyssa. Following Adrics death, the TARDIS accidentally arrived at Heathrow airport, here the Doctor and Nyssa left Tegan assuming she would want to stay. The Doctor and Nyssa then travelled together for an amount of time before the renegade Time Lord Omega, attempting to return to our universe. Faced with this threat, the Time Lords were forced to attempt executing the Doctor, but he eventually tracked Omega to Amsterdam where he defeated him and re-encountered Tegan. When the Doctor met a new companion, an alien boy stranded on Earth by the name of Vislor Turlough, soon after, Nyssa left to help cure Lazars Disease on the space station Terminus. Landing in the reign of King John, the crew encountered the Master. However, the Doctor helped Kamelion to regain his free will, the Doctor met three of his previous incarnations when they were summoned to the Death Zone on Gallifrey by president Borusa, who was attempting to gain Rassilons secret of immortality. After further adventures in which the Doctor re-encountered old foes, including the Silurians, the Doctor was eventually forced to destroy Kamelion, when the Master used his mental connection to the robot to regain control of him, a process the robot realised was irreversible. Ultimately, the Fifth Doctor and his last companion Peri Brown were exposed to the drug spectrox in its deadly toxic raw form on Androzani Minor, a sketch of the Fifth Doctor is seen in John Smiths book in the new series episode Human Nature. Visions of the Fifth Doctor appear in The Next Doctor and The Eleventh Hour, however the Tenth Doctor, remembering the event, knew how to stop it because he recalled watching himself correct the mistake when he was the Fifth Doctor
