An exotic pet is a pet which is relatively rare or unusual to keep, or is generally thought of as a wild species rather than as a domesticated pet. The definition varies by culture, location, and over timeāas animals become firmly enough established in the world of animal fancy, they may no longer be considered exotic.
Animal markets in impoverished, tropical countries often sell primates to both tourists and locals as pets, such as these slow lorises, despite laws against the trade.

A pet, or companion animal, is an animal kept primarily for a person's company or entertainment rather than as a working animal, livestock, or a laboratory animal. Popular pets are often considered to have attractive/cute appearances, intelligence, and relatable personalities, but some pets may be taken in on an altruistic basis and accepted by the owner regardless of these characteristics.
