Leaping Laelaps, painted in 1897 by Charles R. Knight in the artist’s impression of the theropod dinosaur Dryptosaurus. Though now considered scientifically outdated, the painting was exceptional in its time for showing dinosaurs as active animals.
Paleoart has historically depended on fossil reconstructions, such as that of Anoplotherium commune by Georges Cuvier in 1812. For instance, its reconstruction was used as a basis for some of the Crystal Palace Dinosaurs sculptures.
