This image of Byrne's body propped against the wall of the lockup of the Benalla police station has been called Australia's first ever press photograph. The badly wounded Ned Kelly was at the time confined to the lockup. Artist Julian Ashton, standing second from left, sketched Byrne's body the previous night.
