Brigadier General John Charteris was a British Army officer. During World War I he was the Chief of Intelligence at the British Expeditionary Force General Headquarters from 1915 to 1918. In later life he was a Unionist Party Member of Parliament (MP) for Dumfriesshire.

Dumfriesshire was a county constituency represented in the House of Commons of Great Britain from 1708 to 1801 and in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 until 2005. It was known as Dumfries from 1950.
