Lieutenant General Joseph Henry Smith was the Ambassador of Ghana to the United States. Smith was the Minister for Defence of Ghana during President John Atta Mills' term of office from 2009 to 2013. He was also Chief of Army Staff of the Ghana Army.

The Chief of Army Staff is the title of the professional head of the Ghana Army. The head of the Army was formerly referred to as the army commander. The current Chief of Army Staff is Major General Bismarck Kwasi Onwona. He was appointed to the position by President Akuffo-Addo on 24 January 2024.
