Kahungunu was a Māori ariki of the Tākitimu tribal confederation and ancestor of the Ngāti Kahungunu and Te Aitanga-a-Māhaki iwi. He probably lived in the late fifteenth century. Although born in Kait
Kahungunu depicted with the canoe paddle of a navigator with pounamu decoration in a carving at the canoe house at Waitangi Treaty Grounds, Waitangi.
