Star Trek

Star Trek is an American science fiction media franchise based on the television series created by Gene Roddenberry. The first television series, simply called Star Trek and now referred to as The Original Series, debuted in 1966 and it followed the interstellar adventures of Captain James T. Kirk and his crew aboard the starship USS Enterprise, an exploration vessel. The Star Trek canon of the franchise include The Original Series, a series, four spin-off television series, its film franchise. In creating Star Trek, Roddenberry was inspired by the Horatio Hornblower novels, the satirical book Gullivers Travels and these adventures continued in the short-lived Star Trek, The Animated Series and six feature films. The adventures of The Next Generation crew continued in four feature films. In 2009, the franchise underwent a reboot set in an alternate timeline, or Kelvin Timeline. This film featured a new cast portraying younger versions of the crew from the show, their adventures were continued in the sequel film. The thirteenth film feature and sequel, Star Trek Beyond, was released to coincide with the franchises 50th anniversary, a new Star Trek TV series, titled Star Trek, Discovery, will premiere in May 2017 on the digital platform CBS All Access. Star Trek has been a phenomenon for decades. Fans of the franchise are called Trekkies or Trekkers, the franchise spans a wide range of spin-offs including games, figurines, novels, toys, and comics. Star Trek had an attraction in Las Vegas that opened in 1998. At least two museum exhibits of props travel the world, the series has its own full-fledged constructed language, Klingon. Several parodies have been made of Star Trek, in addition, viewers have produced several fan productions. As of July 2016, the franchise had generated $10 billion in revenue, Star Trek is noted for its cultural influence beyond works of science fiction. The franchise is also noted for its civil rights stances. The Original Series included one of televisions first multiracial casts, Star Trek references can be found throughout popular culture from movies such as the submarine thriller Crimson Tide to the animated series South Park. Star Trek, The Next Generation is an American science fiction television series in the Star Trek franchise created by Gene Roddenberry that ran between 1987 and 1994. Roddenberry, Maurice Hurley, Rick Berman, Michael Piller and Jeri Taylor served as producers at different times throughout its production. The series involves a starship named Enterprise and is set in the regions of the Milky Way galaxy. The first episode takes place in the year 2364,100 years after the start of the mission described in the original series. It features a new cast and a new starship Enterprise, the fifth to bear the name within the franchises storyline and these are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission, to strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations. TNG premiered the week of September 28,1987, drawing 27 million viewers, in total,176 episodes were made, ending with the two-hour finale All Good Things. The week of May 23,1994, the series was broadcast in first-run syndication with dates and times varying among individual television stations. Three additional Star Trek spin-offs followed The Next Generation, Star Trek, Deep Space Nine, Star Trek, Voyager, and Star Trek, Enterprise. The series formed the basis for the seventh through to the tenth of the Star Trek films, and is also the setting of novels, comic books. Diana Muldaur

Diana Charlton Muldaur is an American film and television actress. Muldaurs television roles include L. A. Laws Rosalind Shays and Dr. Katherine Pulaski in the season of Star Trek. She has been nominated for an Emmy three times, twice for L. A. Law and once for Born Free and she was also nominated twice for a Q award for L. A. Law. She studied acting under Stella Adler and made her name on the New York stage and she was at one point a board member of the Screen Actors Guild and was the first woman to serve as president of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. In 1965, Muldaur landed the role of Ann Wicker in the CBS daytime soap opera The Secret Storm and she then did a five-episode arc as Jeannie Orloff in the final season of Richard Chamberlains NBC medical drama, Dr. Kildare. Various roles as a guest star in episodes of television shows followed, including Bonanza, I Spy, The Courtship of Eddies Father, The Invaders, Mannix, Mod Squad, Hawaii Five-O. The Virginian, and an arc on the Ben Gazzarra drama Run for Your Life. Multiple collaborations between Muldaur and Burt Reynolds began when they met while guest-starring on the third season The F. B. I. episode An Act of Violence in 1965. Subsequently, Muldaur turned in memorable guest performances on Hawk and Dan August, in 1967, Muldaur guest-starred on the Gunsmoke episode Fandango with James Arness. An excerpt of that dialogue was sampled on the Pink Floyd album The Wall, after Hey You. In 1968, she appeared in the original Star Trek episodes Return to Tomorrow, during this time, a friendship with creator Gene Roddenberry formed that led to him cast Muldaur as Marg in the television movie Planet Earth with John Saxon. Later she appeared as Dr. Katherine Pulaski in 20 episodes of the season of Star Trek. Harold Robbins The Survivors afforded Muldaur her first big break, when in 1969, unfortunately, the soap, a comeback vehicle for Hollywood icon Lana Turner, was canceled early into the 1970 television season after 15 episodes. The cast also included Ralph Bellamy and George Hamilton, Muldaur appeared in the ensemble-apocalypse thriller Chosen Survivors with Jackie Cooper, Richard Jaeckel and Barbara Babcock. In 1977, she played Elaine Mati, the wife of mentally-unstable doctor Telly Savalas in the independent film Beyond Reason. Muldaur guest starred in the first series of Alias Smith and Jones The Great Shell Game in 1971, in a 1972 Hawaii Five-O episode she was guest star, along with Ricardo Montalban. She also had a role as Judge Eleanor Hooper on The Tony Randall Show during the shows 1976-1978 run. The Federation was first introduced in the 1966–1969 television show Star Trek as the organization that sent the starship USS Enterprise on its mission of peaceful exploration. As the Federation has continued to explore the galaxy and expanded its membership, it has been challenged by hostile alien civilizations such as the Borg. The survival, success, and growth of the Federation and its principles of freedom have become some of the Star Trek franchises central themes, the Federation was originally conceived as an idealized version of the United Nations. The Federation has been well received by critics and fans, becoming one of the most enduring storylines. As part of the message he wanted the show to convey, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry intended to depict the Federation as an ideal. The social structure within the Federation is classless and operates within a money-less New World Economy, the Federation is described as stressing, at least nominally, the values of universal liberty, equality, justice, peace, and cooperation. The Federation also maintains its own quasi-militaristic and scientific exploratory agency, the television series and films depict Earth and humanity as holding a center-stage political role within the Federation, in some ways first among equals. The legislature, the Federation Council, is located at the Presidio of San Francisco, several other bodies of the Federation have been depicted. There is an executive headed by a Federation President, who keeps offices in the Palais de la Concorde in Paris. There is a branch as well, the highest court of which is the Federation Supreme Court. The Federations scientific, diplomatic and defensive/military arm is Starfleet, depicted as being headquartered at Fort Baker, just north of San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge. The Federation comes into conflict with other major powers in the galaxy such as the Klingon Empire, the Romulan Star Empire, the Cardassian Union, the Borg. The United Federation of Planets has existed as part of the Star Trek universe since the first season of the series and is the primary focus of all the Star Trek series. Several episodes of Star Trek, Enterprise follow events leading up the creation of the Federation, the formation of the Coalition seems to have been the event that provoked the xenophobic Terra Prime incident in the episodes Demons and Terra Prime. After Terra Prime leader John Frederick Paxton exploited the xenophobia on Earth, many of the aliens were unnerved, however, they were convinced by a speech from Captain Jonathan Archer to give the idea of a united organization of worlds a chance. Six years later in 2161, the United Federation of Planets was organized, the Federation is founded under a document known as the Charter of the United Federation of Planets October 9,2161, which is occasionally referred to informally as the Constitution. It draws text and inspiration from the United Nations Charter and other sources and this is intended to prevent even well-intentioned Federation personnel from introducing changes which could destabilize or even destroy other pre-warp-era cultures through interference. Starfleets Omega Directive supersedes the Prime Directive allowing for any means possible to destroy the Omega particle if encountered and it includes a set of guarantees of civil rights, the Seventh Guarantee being analogous to the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution and its protection against self-incrimination

Starfleet

Starfleet is a fictional organization in the Star Trek media franchise. While the majority of Starfleets members are human and it is headquartered on Earth, hundreds of species are also represented. During production of episodes of the original series, several details of the makeup of the Star Trek universe had yet to be worked out. However, references to the United Earth Space Probe Agency, for example, the Friendship One probe is marked with the letters UESPA-1 in the Star Trek, Voyager episode Friendship One. Other background props included additional UESPA references, such as Captain Jean-Luc Picards family album in Star Trek Generations, during the production of Star Trek, Enterprise, some larger Starfleet insignia designs included the name United Earth Space Probe Agency. However, the Starfleet that is in existence before the Federation is a different organization than that of the Federation Starfleet, Starfleet acts under a Prime Directive of non-interference with developing worlds or their internal politics. The Prime Directive and Starfleets first-contact policies are at the center of several episodes in each Star Trek series, Starfleet Headquarters is shown to be located on Earth, northeast of the Golden Gate Bridge in the present-day Fort Baker area. Starfleet Academy is located in the general area. Additionally, various episodes show Starfleet operating a series of starbases throughout Federation territory, as ground facilities, the flagship of Starfleet is often considered to be the starship USS Enterprise. Starfleet has many components, including the following, As early as the original Star Trek, later series establish it as an officer training facility with a four-year educational program. The main campus is located near Starfleet Headquarters in what is now Fort Baker, Starfleet Command is the headquarters/command center of Starfleet. The term Starfleet Command is first used in TOS episode Court Martial and its headquarters are depicted as being in Fort Baker, across the Golden Gate from San Francisco, in Star Trek, The Motion Picture and Star Trek IV, The Voyage Home. Overlooking the Command from the side of the Golden Gate is the permanent site of the Council of the United Federation of Planets in what is now the Presidio of San Francisco. StarTrek. com notes that many of Starfleets ships are built on Mare Island near San Francisco, the Enterprise-D and USS Voyager are depicted to have been constructed at a shipyard named Utopia Planitia in Mars orbit. The Utopia Planitia served as Starfleets main ship yards throughout a portion of Starfleets existence. After the Enterprise-D encountered the Borg in the episode Q Who the size of the Utopia Planitia shipyards was doubled out of fear of a Borg strike and they were once again doubled after the Dominion threat became more evident. In the 2013 sequel, Montgomery Scotty Scott discovers a covert Starfleet facility, near Jupiter, as one minion of the Dominion in the Star Trek, DS9 episode, Rocks and Shoals notes, Starfleet engineers are reputed to be able to Turn rocks into replicators. USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D)

USS Enterprise is a 24th century starship in the Star Trek fictional universe and the principal setting of the Star Trek, The Next Generation television series. The Enterprise-D also appears in the episode of Star Trek, Deep Space Nine, the series finale of Star Trek, Enterprise. The Enterprise-D is a Galaxy-class ship and the sixth Federation starship in the Star Trek universe to carry the name Enterprise, Enterprise-D is the flagship of Starfleet. In most of its service in the Star Trek universe, the officer of Enterprise-D is Captain Jean-Luc Picard. In Star Trek Generations, after combat with the Duras sisters ship, the stardrive section was destroyed. The ship was replaced by the Sovereign class starship USS Enterprise, andrew Probert, who helped update the original Enterprise for Star Trek, The Motion Picture, designed the Enterprise-D. Originally assigned to design the bridge, Probert had a what if sketch hanging on his wall that he had drawn after working on The Motion Picture. Story editor David Gerrold saw the sketch and brought it to creator Gene Roddenberrys attention, Probert received a design patent on the Enterprise-D design in 1990. For the third season, model-maker Greg Jein built a four-foot miniature, the six-foot model was used whenever a saucer separation sequence needed to be filmed, and it was then updated by ILM for use in Star Trek Generations. Jonathan Frakes said, When we negotiate our contracts, Paramount’s company line is that the ship is in fact the star of the show and its projected value was $20,000 to $30,000, but the final sale price was $576,000. It was the most expensive item in the auction, iLMs John Knoll also built a CGI Electric Image model of the Enterprise-D for the film Star Trek Generations. That model was transferred to LightWave and used to create various Galaxy-class starships in episodes of Star Trek, Deep Space Nine and in the Star Trek, Voyager episode Timeless. Eden FXs Gabriel Köerner built a new CGI LightWave model for the Enterprise-Ds appearance in Star Trek, Enterprises series finale, the proportions of the Galaxy-class Enterprise-D were different from the original Enterprise while retaining its familiar dual warp nacelles and saucer section appearance. The nacelles were made smaller than the saucer section, based on the idea that warp engines would have become more efficient over time. The Enterprise-D is first seen in the episode Encounter at Farpoint under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, several episodes, as well as the ships dedication plaque, establish that the Enterprise was built at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in orbit around Mars. The Enterprise-D is the third Galaxy-class starship, after the pathfinder ship USS Galaxy, during the Star Trek, The Next Generation series, the ships crew makes first contact with multiple species, including the Borg in Q Who and the Q Continuum in Encounter at Farpoint. The Enterprise-D is instrumental in the defeat of the Borg during their 2366 attempt to invade the Federation in The Best of Both Worlds, Part II. In 2371, as depicted in Star Trek Generations, the Klingon Duras sisters obtain the phase modulation frequency of the Enterprise-Ds shields, although the Enterprise-D destroys the sisters ship, damage to the warp drive coolant system prompts an emergency saucer separation

Deliberately mixing styles of uniforms from the series was occasionally used to enhance the sense of time travel or alternative universes. The rank system of the Star Trek universe resembles that of the United States Navy, in later television series, ranks are indicated by varying numbers of pips or bars on the individuals uniform collars. The insignia are worn on the left breast by all personnel, originally gold with a black border, but the shape differed based on the ship or base to which the person was assigned as seen in TOS episodes Court Martial, The Doomsday Machine, etc. In the case of the Enterprise, the insignia was a delta or arrowhead shape, in the second pilot, the science/medical and engineering/operations symbols were reversed, and there were other slight variations between the insignia as used in the pilots and in the regular series. A rank of captain is mentioned in two episodes, but no insignia are shown. The original uniform designs were the product of designer William Ware Theiss, the original series uniforms consisted of a colored top and dark pants, with significant variations between the designs used in the pilot episodes and the rest of the series. The original concept used a heavy, ribbed turtle neck collar of the color as the tunic for the men, with a cowl neck variation for the women. Officers in the first Star Trek pilot, The Cage, wear a single gold stripe, with only the officer grades lieutenant. A chief is also wearing a different sleeve stripe. Characters addressed as crewman wear no sleeve insignia, in the first pilot, the uniforms also include gray coats with silver rank stripes on the sleeves, worn on away missions and identical for men and women, and an optional gray cap. In the second episode, Where No Man Has Gone Before, most officers again wear a single stripe. The crew wore a triangular assignment patch that identified them as being with the USS Enterprise, personnel from other Starfleet vessels or Starfleet Command wore different assignment patches. Certain operations and engineering personnel wore red jumpsuits with black undershirts, the frequent death of red-uniformed security officers led to the coining of the popular term redshirt. The most commonly used command division shirts were actually green but appeared gold under the lights used on the set, in later series, the gold color was canonized in dialog. Jean-Luc Picard

Jean-Luc Picard is a fictional character in the Star Trek franchise, most often seen as Captain of the starship USS Enterprise-D. He is most notably portrayed by actor Patrick Stewart, after the success of the contemporary Star Trek feature films, a new Star Trek television series featuring a new cast was announced on October 10,1986. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry named Picard for one or both of the twin brothers Auguste Piccard and Jean Felix Piccard, 20th-century Swiss scientists, Patrick Stewart, who has a background of theatre at the Royal Shakespeare Company, was initially considered for the role of Data. Roddenberry did not want to cast Stewart as Picard, since he had envisioned an actor who was masculine, virile and he had his toupee delivered from London to meet with Paramount executives, but Roddenberry ordered Stewart to remove the awful looking hairpiece. Stewarts stentorian voice impressed the executives, who approved the casting. As the series progressed, Stewart exercised more control over the characters development, there was a sort of double action that occurred. In one sense Picard was expanding like this and at the time he was also growing closer and closer to me as well. I became a better listener than I ever had been as a result of playing Jean Luc Picard because it was one of the things that he does terrifically well, Stewart stated, however, that he is not nearly as serious or brooding as his alter ego. Stewart also stated, One of the delights of having done this series, several years after the series has ended. I enjoy hearing how much people enjoyed the work we did and its always gratifying to me that this bald, middle-aged Englishman seems to connect with them. Stewart has also commented that his role has helped open up Shakespeare to science fiction fans. He has noted the presence of Trekkies in the audience whenever he plays theater. And they say, Ive never seen Shakespeare before, I didnt think Id understand it, jean-Luc Picard was born to Maurice and Yvette Picard in La Barre, France, on 13 July 2305, and he dreamed of joining Starfleet. He and the rest of his family speak English, with English accents—the French language having become obscure by the 24th century, as mentioned in the Next Generation episode Code of Honor. Shortly after graduation, Picard was stabbed in the heart by a Nausicaan, leaving the organ irreparable and requiring replacement with a parthenogenetic implant, Picard eventually served as first officer aboard the USS Stargazer, which he later commanded. During that time, he invented a warp-speed starship battle tactic that would become known as the Picard Maneuver, though such resolutions are usually peaceful, Picard is also shown using his remarkable tactical cunning in situations when it is required. Picard has a fondness for stories, Shakespearean drama. He is frequently shown drinking Earl Grey tea and issuing the order, Make it so, or, Star Trek, The Next Generation depicts Picards command of the USS Enterprise

William Riker

William Thomas Will Riker, played by Jonathan Frakes, is a fictional character in the Star Trek universe appearing primarily as a main character in Star Trek, The Next Generation. Throughout the series and its films, he is the Enterprises first officer. Frakes went to seven auditions over six weeks before being cast as Riker and he becomes comfortable on the Enterprise, repeatedly turning down offers of his own command, and he learns to cherish the company of his fellow officers. Nonetheless, Riker retains a willingness to occasionally disregard the chain of command, Riker is usually referred to as Will, although in early first-season episodes of TNG he is sometimes called Bill by Deanna Troi. He is also usually called Number One by Captain Picard, because of his position as first officer on the Enterprise, Rikers background is first explored in the second-season episode The Icarus Factor. In the episode, Rikers estranged father, Kyle, visits the Enterprise to offer his son the command of the USS Aries, which Riker refuses. We learn that Riker grew up in Valdez, Alaska on Earth, that his mother, Elizabeth, died when he was two old, and that he was raised by his father until the age of 15. In the episode, Riker had not spoken with his father for 15 years, in the episode Lower Decks a waiter at Ten Forward mistakenly states that Riker is Canadian, but in the same episode Riker clarifies that he grew up in Alaska. In the two-part episode The Best of Both Worlds Riker takes command of the Enterprise, assuming the rank of captain through a field promotion and orchestrates Picards rescue. This episode also explores the idea of Riker being unwilling to take chances since he had grown comfortable in his role as First Officer aboard the Enterprise. By the end of the episode, when he orders the Enterprise to fire on former Captain Picard, now Locutus of Borg, the sixth-season episode Second Chances reveals that Will Riker was duplicated long ago by a transporter malfunction. The second Riker takes the name Thomas, which is revealed to be William Rikers middle name, in the seventh-season episode The Pegasus, Riker must confront his former commanding officer, Admiral Erik Pressman, over a cover-up related to the destruction of the USS Pegasus. In the Enterprise series finale, Riker appears as a never before seen cook discussing matters of life, duty, before the beginning of the series, Riker was involved in a romantic relationship with Counselor Troi on her home planet Betazed. They often refer to other as imzadi, a Betazoid term of endearment meaning beloved. The novel Imzadi takes place before the beginning of the series and explores the history of the relationship between the two characters, the following movie, Star Trek Nemesis, begins with their wedding on board the Enterprise-E. At the start of the film, Riker finally accepts a promotion to Captain and an offer to command the USS Titan, during the final scenes he bids Picard. Although Riker was clean-shaven for the first season, he grew a beard at the start of the season that later would become something of a trademark. Data is a character in the fictional Star Trek franchise. He appears in the television series Star Trek, The Next Generation and the feature films Star Trek, Generations, Star Trek, First Contact, Star Trek, Insurrection, Data is portrayed by actor Brent Spiner. Data was found by Starfleet in 2338 as a sole survivor on Omicron Theta in the rubble of a colony left after an attack from the Crystalline Entity and his positronic brain allows him impressive computational capabilities. This goal eventually led to the addition of a chip, also created by Soong. Gene Roddenberry told Brent Spiner that over the course of the series, Data was to more and more like a human until the end of the show, when he would be very close. That was the idea and thats the way that the writers took it, Spiner felt that Data exhibited the Chaplinesque characteristics of a sad, tragic clown. To get into his role as Data, Spiner used the character of Robby the Robot from the film Forbidden Planet as a role model. Commenting on Datas perpetual albino-like appearance, he said, I spent more hours of the day in make-up than out of make-up, Spiner also portrayed Datas manipulative and malignant brother Lore, and Datas creator, Dr. Noonien Soong. Additionally, he portrayed another Soong-type android, B-4, in the film Star Trek Nemesis, Spiner said his favorite Data scene takes place in Descent, when Data plays poker on the holodeck with a re-creation of the famous physicist Stephen Hawking, played by Hawking himself. Spiner reprised his role of Data in the Star Trek, Enterprise series finale These Are the Voyages. in a speaking part. Spiner felt that he had aged out of the role. Dialog in Datalore establishes some of Datas backstory and it is stated that he was deactivated in 2336 on Omicron Theta before an attack by the Crystalline Entity, a spaceborne creature which converts life forms to energy for sustenance. He was found and reactivated by Starfleet personnel two years later, Data went to Starfleet Academy from 2341–45 and then served in Starfleet aboard the USS Trieste. He was assigned to the Enterprise under Captain Jean-Luc Picard in 2364, in Datalore, Data discovers his amoral brother, Lore, and learns that he was created after Lore. Lore fails in an attempt to betray the Enterprise to the Crystalline Entity, in Brothers, Data reunites with Dr. Soong. There he meets again with Lore, who steals the emotion chip Soong meant for Data to receive, Lore returns in the two-part episode Descent, using the emotion chip to control Data and make him help with Lores attempt to make the Borg entirely artificial lifeforms. Data eventually deactivates Lore, and recovers, but does not install the damaged emotion chip, in The Measure of a Man, a Starfleet judge rules that Data is not Starfleet property. Professor James Moriarty is a fictional character in some of the Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Moriarty is a criminal mastermind whom Holmes describes as the Napoleon of crime, Doyle lifted the phrase from a Scotland Yard inspector who was referring to Adam Worth, a real-life criminal mastermind and one of the individuals upon whom the character of Moriarty was based. The character was introduced primarily as a device to enable Conan Doyle to kill Sherlock Holmes. However, in adaptations, he has been given a greater prominence. The criminal mastermind follows, and the ends on top of the Reichenbach Falls. In this story, Moriarty is introduced as a lord who protects nearly all of the criminals of England in exchange for their obedience. Moriarty plays a role in only one other Holmes story, The Valley of Fear, set before The Final Problem. In The Valley of Fear, Holmes attempts to prevent Moriartys agents from committing a murder, doctor Watson, even when narrating, never meets Moriarty, and relies upon Holmes to relate accounts of the detectives feud with the criminal. Conan Doyle is inconsistent on Watsons familiarity with Moriarty, in The Final Problem, Watson tells Holmes he has never heard of Moriarty, while in The Valley of Fear, set earlier on, Watson already knows of him as the famous scientific criminal. In The Empty House, Holmes states that Moriarty had commissioned a powerful air gun from a blind German mechanic surnamed von Herder, which was used by Moriartys employee/acolyte Colonel Moran. It closely resembled a cane, allowing for easy concealment, was capable of firing bullets at long range. Moriarty also has a preference for organising accidents. His attempts to kill Holmes include falling masonry and a speeding horse-drawn van and he is also responsible for stage-managing the death of Birdy Edwards. Moriarty is extremely intelligent, cunning, calculative, murderous and manipulative and he is also ruthless, shown by his steadfast vow to Sherlock Holmes that if you are clever enough to bring destruction upon me, rest assured that I will do as much to you. Moriarty is categorised by Holmes as a powerful criminal mastermind who is purely adept at committing any atrocity to perfection without losing any sleep over it. It is stated in The Final Problem that Moriarty does not directly participate in the activities he plans, Holmes described Moriarty as follows, He is a man of good birth and excellent education, endowed by nature with a phenomenal mathematical faculty. At the age of twenty-one he wrote a treatise upon the binomial theorem which has had a European vogue, on the strength of it, he won the mathematical chair at one of our smaller universities, and had, to all appearances, a most brilliant career before him. But the man had hereditary tendencies of the most diabolical kind, a criminal strain ran in his blood, which, instead of being modified, was increased and rendered infinitely more dangerous by his extraordinary mental powers

Commander Beverly Crusher, played by actress Gates McFadden, is a fictional character on the science fiction television series Star Trek, The Next Generation and its subsequent spin-off films. She was a character in the show for all but the second of its seven seasons. During the second season, the Crusher character was out of the show. She was replaced by the louder, more outgoing Dr. Katherine Pulaski, upon her return, the character became more varied and more richly developed, and was not afraid to go head-to-head with Picard. Episodes featuring Beverly Crusher focused on her life, often with unexpected alien lifeforms. Beverly Crusher was born Beverly Howard on October 13,2324 in Copernicus City, further back, before the colonization of Luna, her ancestors were Scottish-Americans. Resourceful Felisa, with her granddaughters aid, used herbs, grasses, tree chemicals, during her youth, Beverly was known as quiet, shy, and socially awkward. She was also very self-conscious about her red hair, and at the age of thirteen. She admits to Data later in the episode Offspring, that she was ridiculed and unpopular in school. She also admits that it brought back memories of those years when she saw her son Wesley going through similar ridicule as a child. It was her grandmothers career as a healer and Beverlys own caring, high intelligence, the Arvada III disaster solidified Beverlys decision to be a doctor. After Arvada III was evacuated, Beverly and Felisa then settled on Caldos II where Beverly finished growing up, Crusher attended Starfleet Academy from 2342 to 2350 during which she attended medical school. While attending the academy she became involved with cadet Jack Crusher. They were introduced by their friend, Walker Keel and she graduated top of her class and married Jack in 2348. She had also called the Dancing Doctor when she was at the academy and had won multiple awards at a dance competition in St. Louis. In 2350, she started an internship with Dr. Dalen Quaice, after marrying Jack, she returned to the academy while he left for the USS Stargazer. A year later, she gave birth to a son named Wesley Crusher, Jack died on an away mission when Wesley was 5 years old. Set in the 24th century, the series follows the adventures of the crew of the Starfleet starship Enterprise-D. Season two featured changes to the main cast, following the departure of Gates McFadden, Diana Muldaur was cast as Dr. Katherine Pulaski for a single season before the return of McFadden in season three. Academy Award winner Whoopi Goldberg also joined the cast after pursuing a role from the producers, There were significant changes backstage to the writing team. Maurice Hurley became head writer, and following extensive re-writes to The Royale and Manhunt, likewise, following the submission of a script for Blood and Fire, David Gerrold allowed his contract to run out due to issues with Gene Roddenberry and Leonard Maizlish, Roddenberrys lawyer. Other departing writers included Leonard Mlodinow and Scott Rubenstein, while Melinda M. Snodgrass, Hans Beimler, at the end of the season, Hurley also left the team. Production designer Herman F. Zimmerman left the show to work on Star Trek V, The Final Frontier and was replaced by Richard James, who remained with the show for the rest of the series. The 1988 Writers Guild of America strike caused the season to be shortened to 22 episodes, the strike also resulted in the writing team using an unused script from the aborted Star Trek, Phase II to open the season, entitled The Child. The Child opened to 10.9 million viewers, and ratings peaked with both A Matter of Honor and The Measure of a Man, which were watched by 11.3 million. Although a decrease in viewers saw the lowest number of viewers for an episode in the series in Manhunt. Critics praised the episodes The Measure of a Man and Q Who, the season was first released on DVD on May 7,2002 on Region 1, and was subsequently released on Regions 2 and 3. The region-free Blu-ray releases came in December 2012, with The Measure of the Man, the second season saw Maurice Hurley being promoted to head writer after the departure of Robert Lewin. Hurley had been brought on board during the first season and his prior experience had been with shows such as The Equalizer and Miami Vice, and he later explained that he took the position because it challenged him. The 1988 Writers Guild of America strike had caused problems at the end of the first season, executive producer Rick Berman blamed a decrease in quality at the start of season two on the lack of time available for proper development due to the writers strike. Hurley felt that the writing on the managed to get into a rhythm during the second half of the first season. He also criticised the lack of character arcs in the series, saying that I did some good, some bad, some mediocre and its not where I come from. Hurley had objected to the violent and gory scenes seen in the first-season episode Conspiracy, written by Tracy Tormé, Tormé stepped down from his role as co-executive story editor, taking credit instead as a creative consultant. Following Hurleys modifications to Tormés scripts for The Royale and Manhunt, at one point, Roddenberry had thought that Tormé would become eventual showrunner, but the writer left due to the re-writes required under Hurleys tenure. Cheryl Gates McFadden, usually credited as Gates McFadden, is an American actress and choreographer. She is best known for playing Dr. Beverly Crusher in the Star Trek, The Next Generation television series, McFadden was born in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. She attended Brandeis University graduating with a Bachelor of Arts cum laude in theatre arts, after graduating from Brandeis, she moved to Paris and studied theatre with actor Jacques Lecoq. She is of Lithuanian descent on her mothers side, McFadden often worked in Jim Henson productions, Labyrinth, The Muppets Take Manhattan, and uncredited work on Dreamchild. As a way of distinguishing her acting work from her choreography, she is credited as Gates McFadden as an actress. However, she was credited as Cheryl McFadden in the Troma movie When Nature Calls and in the episode of The Cosby Show. She appeared in The Hunt for Red October as Jack Ryans wife Caroline, in 1987, McFadden was cast as Dr. Beverly Crusher on Star Trek, The Next Generation. The Crusher character was slated to be Captain Jean-Luc Picards love interest, another important aspect of the character was being a widow balancing motherhood and a career. Maurice Hurley, head writer and showrunner, did not like working with McFadden, diana Muldaur joined the production as the Enterprises new chief medical officer, Dr. Katherine Pulaski, for season 2. Series creator Gene Roddenberry admitted that the Dr. Pulaski character did not develop a chemistry with the other characters, McFadden reprised her role for all four TNG movies and also provided her voice for PC games Star Trek, A Final Unity and Star Trek Generations. Also, McFadden directed the episode Genesis in which an infection causes the crew to de-evolve into primitive forms of life, McFadden co-starred in the 1990 comedy Taking Care of Business starring James Belushi, and fellow Next Generation alumnus, John de Lancie. She also starred in the 1995 television series Marker with Richard Grieco and appeared in the made-for-television movie Crowned, additional television work was the role of Allison Rourke, Paul Buchmans boss, in four episodes of the sitcom Mad About You. In the spring of 2006, McFadden appeared in a series of commercials for Microsoft. She has taught at several universities, as of August 2010, she was listed as an adjunct faculty member in the School of Theater at the University of Southern California. She has been Artistic Director of Ensemble Studio Theatre of Los Angeles since January 2009, during her tenure, she spearheaded the building of the Atwater Village Theatre Collective, a new two-theater space in Los Angeles. Shades of Gray is the 22nd episode of the second season of the American science fiction television series Star Trek, The Next Generation, the 48th episode overall. It was originally broadcast on July 17,1989, in broadcast syndication and it was the only clip show filmed during the series and was created due to a lack of funds left over from other episodes during the season. Set in the 24th century, the series follows the adventures of the crew of the Federation starship Enterprise, in this episode, Commander William Riker undergoes medical treatment by Dr. Katherine Pulaski for an alien infection and must relive numerous past events. It was the episode written by Maurice Hurley, who originated the idea and wrote the first draft of the script, with Hans Beimler. It was directed by Rob Bowman and the sequences were filmed over the course of three days. It was watched by 9.8 million viewers on the first broadcast, Shades of Gray is widely regarded as the worst episode of the series, with critics calling it god-awful and a travesty, even Hurley referred to it negatively. It can be compared to Spocks Brain in The Original Series, during a geological survey on Surata IV, Commander William Riker is struck by a thorn growing on a motile vine plant. The away team beams back to the Enterprise, where Dr. Katherine Pulaski finds out that the thorn has released a deadly virus into Rikers body. Within a matter of hours, the virus will reach Rikers brain, to try to save Rikers life, Pulaski puts him into a machine that will artificially stimulate his brain neurons, keeping them active and resisting the virus. This causes Riker to dream of his past adventures aboard the Enterprise, Rikers first dreams are of reasonably neutral occasions, such as his first meeting with Lieutenant Commander Data. However, while pleasing to Rikers mind, the passionate dreams only worsen Rikers condition, Pulaski and Counselor Deanna Troi therefore agree to try to make the machine evoke negative dreams instead. Thus Riker dreams of Lieutenant Tasha Yars death, or the apparent death of Deanna Trois child and this has the desired effect, as the negative endorphins drive the virus away, but the endorphins are not strong enough. As a last resort, Pulaski uses the machine to evoke dreams of raw, primitive feelings of fear, thus Riker dreams of fighting the tar creature Armus, the alien-controlled Admiral Gregory Quinn, and the Klingon officer Klag on board the warship Pagh. Seeing that the raw emotions work best, Pulaski intensifies the dreams to come at a rapid pace. This finally kills the virus and Riker recovers, the episode was intended to save money at the end of the season by being a bottle episode which featured few additional characters. The only guest star was Colm Meaney as recurring character Chief Miles OBrien, the reason was that the show had overspent on the episodes Elementary, Dear Data and Q Who, and Paramount Studios was holding the series to their overall season budget. It was the last episode on which Maurice Hurley acted as writer, he referred to the episode as a piece of shit and terrible. Star Trek is an American science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry that follows the adventures of the starship USS Enterprise and its crew. It later acquired the retronym of Star Trek, The Original Series to distinguish the show within the franchise that it began. The show is set in the Milky Way galaxy, roughly during the 2260s, the ship and crew are led by Captain James T. Kirk, first officer and science officer Spock, and chief medical officer Leonard McCoy. Shatners voice-over introduction during each episodes opening credits stated the purpose, Space. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise and its five-year mission, to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before. The series was produced from September 1966 to December 1967 by Norway Productions and Desilu Productions, Star Trek aired on NBC from September 8,1966 to June 3,1969 and was actually seen first on September 6,1966, on Canadas CTV network. Star Treks Nielsen ratings while on NBC were low, and the network cancelled it after three seasons and 79 episodes. Several years later, the became a bona fide hit in broadcast syndication, remaining so throughout the 1970s, achieving cult classic status. The series contains significant elements of Space Western, as described by Gene Roddenberry, on March 11,1964, Gene Roddenberry, a long-time fan of science fiction, drafted a short treatment for a science-fiction television series that he called Star Trek. This was to be set on board a large interstellar spaceship S. S. Yorktown in the 23rd century, whose crew was dedicated to exploring a small portion of our galaxy. Some of the influences on his idea that Roddenberry noted included A. E. van Vogts tales of the spaceship Space Beagle, Eric Frank Russells Marathon series of stories, and the film Forbidden Planet. Roddenberry also drew heavily from C. S. Foresters Horatio Hornblower novels that depict a sea captain who exercises broad discretionary authority on distant sea missions of noble purpose. Roddenberry often humorously referred to Captain Kirk as Horatio Hornblower in Space, Roddenberry had extensive experience in writing for series about the Old West that had been popular television fare earlier in the 1960s and the 1950s. Armed with this background, the first draft deliberately characterizes the new show as Wagon Train to the stars. Like the familiar Wagon Train, each episode was to be an adventure story, set within the overarching structure of a continuing journey. With the notable exception of Star Trek, Deep Space Nine, all future television, in Roddenberrys original concept, the protagonist was Captain Robert April of the starship S. S. Yorktown. This character was developed into Captain Christopher Pike, first portrayed by Jeffrey Hunter, in April 1964, Roddenberry presented the Star Trek draft to Desilu Productions, a leading independent television production company. Eugene Wesley Gene Roddenberry was an American television screenwriter and producer. He is best remembered for creating the original Star Trek television series, born in El Paso, Texas, Roddenberry grew up in Los Angeles, where his father was a police officer. Roddenberry flew 89 combat missions in the Army Air Forces during World War II, later, he followed in his fathers footsteps and joined the Los Angeles Police Department, where he also began to write scripts for television. As a freelance writer, Roddenberry wrote scripts for Highway Patrol, Have Gun–Will Travel, in 1964, Roddenberry created Star Trek, which premiered in 1966 and ran for three seasons before being canceled. He then worked on projects, including a string of failed television pilots. The syndication of Star Trek led to its popularity, this, in turn, resulted in the Star Trek feature films, on which Roddenberry continued to produce. He continued to consult on the series until his death in 1991, years after his death, Roddenberry was one of the first humans to have his ashes carried into earth orbit. The popularity of the Star Trek universe and films has inspired films, books, comic books, video games, and fan films set in the Star Trek universe. Roddenberry was born on August 19,1921, in his parents rented home in El Paso, Texas, the family moved to Los Angeles in 1923 after Genes father passed the Civil Service test and was given a police commission there. During his childhood, Roddenberry was interested in reading, especially magazines, and was a fan of stories such as John Carter of Mars, Tarzan. Roddenberry majored in science at Los Angeles City College, where he began dating Eileen-Anita Rexroat. He obtained a license through the United States Army Air Corps-sponsored Civilian Pilot Training Program. He enlisted with the USAAC on December 18,1941, and he graduated from the USAAC on August 5,1942, when he was commissioned as a second lieutenant. He was posted to Bellows Field, Oahu, to join the 394th Bomb Squadron, 5th Bombardment Group, of the Thirteenth Air Force, which flew the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress. On August 2,1943, while flying out of Espiritu Santo, the plane Roddenberry was piloting overshot the runway by 500 feet and impacted trees, crushing the nose, the official report absolved Roddenberry of any responsibility. Roddenberry spent the remainder of his career in the United States. He was involved in a plane crash, this time as a passenger. Planet Earth is a science fiction television movie that was created by Gene Roddenberry, written by Roddenberry and Juanita Bartlett. It first aired on April 23,1974 on the ABC network and it was presented as a pilot for what was hoped to be a new weekly television series. The pilot focused on gender relations from an early 1970s perspective, Dylan Hunt, confronted with a post-apocalyptic matriarchal society, muses, Womens lib. Planet Earth was the attempt by Roddenberry to create a weekly series set on a post-apocalyptic future Earth. The previous pilot was Genesis II, and it featured many of the concepts, sets and props from Genesis II also found their way into Planet Earth. A third and final movie, Strange New World, was aired in 1975 and this movie also starred John Saxon as Captain Anthony Vico. In this movie a trio of astronauts returns to Earth after 180 years in suspended animation to locate the headquarters of PAX. None of these three pilots was ever developed into a series, however, some of the served as prototypes for the later TV series Andromeda. It is the year 2133, and Earth was devastated by a nuclear war decades earlier, a team from PAX is conducting a survey of central California. PAX is a society dedicated to restoring civilization and peace to the world. Returning to PAX headquarters, the team is attacked by a group of militaristic, mutant humans known as the Kreeg, whose commandant is played by character actor John Quade. After a struggle, the PAX team manages to escape in a subshuttle, one of the team, Pater Kimbridge, is severely wounded and, to save his life, requires a bioplastic prosthesis to repair the damaged pulmonary artery sheared away by the Kreegs rifle shot. Their search leads the team to the Confederacy of Ruth, a society of latter-day Amazons, as a ruse, a woman in the PAX group, Harper-Smythe, binds Hunt and enters the city with him. Once there, she meets Marg, the leader of the women, Harper-Smythe makes her way to a nearby farm and meets a woman who explains how the society operates. While captive, Hunt learns that the men are subjugated by a drug in their food, despite his efforts, he soon succumbs to the effects of the drug. Harper-Smythe arrives at the village in time to reclaim her property by challenging, unable to find Connor in the village, Marg invites Harper-Smythe to her farm where she can see her newcomer Dinks. Connor soon comes forward with an antidote for the drug and Hunt recovers, the three decide Harper-Smythe should swap Hunt for Connor, allowing the doctor to return to PAX. Marg agrees to the exchange and Connor and Harper-Smythe leave for PAX after first distributing the antidote in the Dink food supply and that evening, free of the influence of the drug, Hunt seduces Marg

Karl Urban assumed the role of the character in the 2009 film Star Trek, McCoy was born in Atlanta, Georgia, January 20,2227. In 2266, McCoy was posted as chief officer of the USS Enterprise under Captain James T. Kirk. McCoy and Kirk are good friends, even brotherly, the passionate, sometimes cantankerous McCoy frequently argues with Kirks other confidant, science officer Spock, and occasionally is bigoted toward Spocks Vulcan heritage. McCoy often plays the role of Kirks conscience, offering a counterpoint to Spocks logic, McCoy is suspicious of technology, especially the transporter. As a physician, he prefers less intrusive treatment and believes in the bodys innate recuperative powers, the characters nickname, Bones, is a play on sawbones, an epithet for physicians qualified as surgeons. Kirk orders McCoys commission reactivated in Star Trek, The Motion Picture, Spock transfers his katra—his knowledge and experience—into McCoy before dying in Star Trek II, The Wrath of Khan. This causes mental anguish for McCoy, who in Star Trek III, McCoy Kirks crew aboard the in Star Trek IV, The Voyage Home. In Star Trek V, The Final Frontier, McCoy reveals that he helped his father commit suicide to him of his pain. Shortly after the suicide, a cure was found for his fathers disease, Kelley reprised the role for the Encounter at Farpoint pilot episode of Star Trek, The Next Generation, insisting upon no more than the minimum Screen Actors Guild payment for his appearance. In the Star Trek, The Animated Series episode The Survivor, McCoy mentions he has a daughter, chekovs friend Irina in the original series episode The Way to Eden was originally written as McCoys daughter, but changed before the episode was shot. For the second pilot, Where No Man Has Gone Before, although Roddenberry wanted Kelley to play the character of ships doctor, he did not put Kelleys name forward to NBC, the network never rejected the actor as Roddenberry sometimes suggested. Kelleys first broadcast appearance as Doctor Leonard McCoy was in The Man Trap, Kelley was apprehensive about Star Treks future, telling Roddenberry that the show was going to be the biggest hit or the biggest miss God ever made. Kelley portrayed McCoy throughout the original Star Trek series and voiced the character in the animated Star Trek, fontana said that while Roddenberry created the series, Kelley essentially created McCoy, everything done with the character was done with Kelleys input. Spock, commonly Mr. Spock, is a fictional character in the Star Trek media franchise. In addition, numerous actors portrayed the various stages of Spocks rapid growth, due to the effects of the Genesis Planet, in the 1984 Star Trek film Star Trek III, The Search for Spock. In the 2009 film Star Trek, Nimoy reprised his role with Zachary Quinto, both reprised their roles in the 2013 sequel Star Trek Into Darkness and Quinto reprised his role again in 2016s Star Trek Beyond. Spock serves aboard the starship Enterprise, as officer and first officer. Spocks mixed human-Vulcan heritage serves as an important plot element in many of the characters appearances, Kirk and Dr. Leonard Bones McCoy, he is one of the three central characters in the original Star Trek series and its films. After retiring from Starfleet, Spock serves as a Federation ambassador, born to the Vulcan Sarek and the human Amanda Grayson, Spock has a troubled childhood due to his mixed heritage. On his homeworld, he was bullied and tormented by full-blooded Vulcan children. For a time, he grew up alongside his older half-brother Sybok, in the episode Amok Time, it is revealed that Spock became betrothed to TPring during his childhood. Sarek supported Spocks scientific learning and supporting his application to the Vulcan Science Academy, in the 2009 film Star Trek, Spock is seen rejecting his acceptance into the Vulcan Science Academy on the basis that they would never fully accept someone who was only half-Vulcan. Because Spock did not enter the VSA, and sought to join Starfleet instead, Spock appeared as the science officer on the USS Enterprise in the first pilot for the series, The Cage. Spock was one of the members of the team who joined Captain Christopher Pike on a mission to Talos IV in order to investigate a distress call. Spock did appear in the pilot, Where No Man Has Gone Before. During the events of that pilot, Spock became concerned at the risk to the ship posed by Lieutenant Commander Gary Mitchell, the earliest appearance of Spock in the series as broadcast was The Man Trap, the first such episode. When he needs to knock out a version of Kirk in The Enemy Within. Together with Chief Engineer Montgomery Scotty Scott work together to rejoin the good and evil versions of the Captain, during Miri, he finds himself to be the only member of the landing party to be immune to the physical affects of the disease affecting human adults on the planet. However, he realises that he is probably a carrier and could infect the Enterprise if he were to return, doctor Leonard McCoy manages to devise a cure, allowing the team to return to the ship. Majel Barrett-Roddenberry was an American actress and producer. She became the wife of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. Roddenberry and she were married in Japan on August 6,1969 and they had one son together, Eugene Rod Roddenberry, Jr. born in 1974. Majel began taking acting classes as a child and she attended Shaker Heights High School, graduating in 1950 before going on to the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, then had some stage roles and came to Hollywood. Her father, William Hudec, was a Cleveland police officer and he was killed in the line of duty in 1955 while Majel was touring with an off-Broadway road company. She was briefly seen in Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter, in an ad parody at the beginning of the film, and had roles in a few movies, including Love in a Goldfish Bowl, Sylvia, A Guide for the Married Man, and Track of Thunder. She worked at the Desilu Studios on several TV shows, including Bonanza, The Untouchables, The Lucy Show and she received training in comedy from Lucille Ball. In 1960, she played Gwen Rutherford on Leave It to Beaver and she first appeared in Star Treks initial pilot, The Cage, as the USS Enterprises brunette unnamed first officer, Number One. William Shatner corroborated this in Star Trek Memories, and added that viewers at test screenings hated the character. Shatner noted that viewers felt she was pushy and annoying. Her role in subsequent episodes of Star Trek was altered to that of blonde Nurse Christine Chapel and her first appearance as Chapel in film dailies prompted NBC executive Jerry Stanley to yodel Well, well--look whos back. In an early scene in Star Trek, The Motion Picture, viewers are informed that she has now become Doctor Chapel, a role which she reprised briefly in Star Trek IV, The Voyage Home. Barrett provided several voices for Star Trek, The Animated Series, including those of Nurse Chapel and an officer named MRess. Her character often vexed the captain of the Enterprise, Jean-Luc Picard, Barrett later appeared as Ambassador Troi in several episodes of Star Trek, Deep Space Nine, where in stark contrast, she developed a strong relationship with Constable Odo. She reprised her role as a shipboard computers voice in two episodes of the prequel series Star Trek, Enterprise, thus making her the actor to have a role in all six televised Star Trek series. She also lent her voice to various games and software related to the franchise. The Video Home System is a standard for consumer-level analog video recording on tape cassettes. Developed by Victor Company of Japan in the early 1970s, it was released in Japan in late 1976, from the 1950s, magnetic tape video recording became a major contributor to the television industry, via the first commercialized video tape recorders. At that time, the devices were used only in professional environments such as television studios. In the 1970s, videotape entered home use, creating the video industry and changing the economics of the television. The television industry viewed videocassette recorders as having the power to disrupt their business, in the 1980s and 1990s, at the peak of VHSs popularity, there were videotape format wars in the home video industry. Two of the formats, VHS and Betamax, received the most media exposure, VHS eventually won the war, dominating 60 percent of the North American market by 1980 and emerging as the dominant home video format throughout the tape media period. Optical disc formats later began to better quality than analog consumer video tape such as standard. The earliest of these formats, LaserDisc, was not widely adopted, however, after the introduction of the DVD format in 1997, VHSs market share began to decline. By 2008, DVD had replaced VHS as the preferred method of distribution. After several attempts by other companies, the first commercially successful VTR, at a price of US$50,000 in 1956, and US$300 for a 90-minute reel of tape, it was intended only for the professional market. Kenjiro Takayanagi, a broadcasting pioneer then working for JVC as its vice president, saw the need for his company to produce VTRs for the Japan market. In 1959, JVC developed a video tape recorder. In 1964, JVC released the DV220, which would be the companys standard VTR until the mid-1970s, in 1969 JVC collaborated with Sony Corporation and Matsushita Electric in building a video recording standard for the Japanese consumer. The effort produced the U-matic format in 1971, which was the first format to become a unified standard, U-matic was successful in business and some broadcast applications, but due to cost and limited recording time very few of the machines were sold for home use. Soon after, Sony and Matsushita broke away from the collaboration effort, Sony started working on Betamax, while Matsushita started working on VX. JVC released the CR-6060 in 1975, based on the U-matic format, Sony and Matsushita also produced U-matic systems of their own. In 1971, JVC engineers Yuma Shiraishi and Shizuo Takano put together a team to develop a consumer-based VTR, by the end of 1971 they created an internal diagram titled VHS Development Matrix, which established twelve objectives for JVCs new VTR. Transporter (Star Trek)

A transporter is a fictional teleportation machine used in the Star Trek universe. Transporters convert a person or object into a pattern, then beam it to a target. The term transporter accident is a term for when a person or object does not rematerialize correctly. According to The Making of Star Trek, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberrys original plan did not include transporters, however, this would have required unfeasible and unaffordable sets and model filming, as well as episode running time spent while landing, taking off, etc. The shuttlecraft was the idea, but when filming began. Transporters were devised as an expensive alternative, achieved by a simple fade-out/fade-in of the subject. Transporters first appear in the pilot episode The Cage. Gene Roddenberry in 1964 had not seen The Fly upon his first draft of The Cage, but it was brought to his attention, and this is how the transporter was considered. In August 2008, physicist Michio Kaku predicted in Discovery Channel Magazine that a device similar to those in Star Trek would be invented within 100 years. Although the Enterprise has a transporter, the crew does not routinely use it for moving biological organisms, instead, they generally prefer using shuttlepods or other means of transportation unless no other means of transportation are possible or feasible. The crew aboard the 23rd century USS Enterprise frequently use the transporter, by the 24th century, transporter travel was reliable and the safest way to travel according to dialogue in the Star Trek, The Next Generation episode Realm of Fear. According to the Star Trek, Deep Space Nine episode Homefront, Starfleet Academy cadets receive transporter rations, reginald Barclay expresses his outright fear of transporting in Realm of Fear. The television series and films do not go into detail about transporter technology. The Star Trek, The Next Generation Technical Manual claims that the devices transport objects in real time, the episode Realm of Fear specifies the length of a transport under unusual circumstances would last. Four or five seconds, about twice the normal time and this calculates the length of a typical transport as between 2 and 2.5 seconds and possibly less. Heisenberg compensators remove uncertainty from the measurements, making transporter travel feasible. Further technology involved in include a computer pattern buffer to enable a degree of leeway in the process. This is a list of characters from the science fiction television series Star Trek, The Next Generation. Characters are ordered alphabetically by name, and only characters who played a significant recurring role in the series are listed. Lieutenant Commander Jack R. Crusher was portrayed by actor Doug Wert, dead before the series beginning, Crusher is the late husband to Beverly Crusher and father of Wesley Crusher, and former second officer aboard the USS Stargazer, Jean-Luc Picards first command. He was killed in action at the age of 32 Earth years, Crusher assured Picard she had signed on the Enterprise-D voluntarily and not due to Picards influence. Jack Crusher once made a recording of himself in which he explained his life. Crusher intended this to be the first in a series of messages, one couple of years. By the time Wesley first got to view the recording, Jack was already long dead and she also appears in the TNG films Star Trek Generations and Star Trek, Nemesis but is uncredited in both. The character first appears in the opening episode The Child. She is said to have the closest relationship with Jean-Luc Picard, Goldberg hoped to play the new ships doctor after Gates McFadden was fired, but the producers did not see her as suitable for the role. They did not think a suitable role could be created, until Goldberg said that she did not care how big or small the role was, even if she just swept the floor in the background. It was from this they decided to give her the role of a bartender and her people, the El-Aurians, are sometimes called the listeners. As a refugee aboard the El-Aurian vessel Lakul, she is rescued from the Nexus by the USS Enterprise-B in the film Star Trek Generations, in Q Who, Guinan states that when the Borg destroyed her homeworld her people were scattered throughout the galaxy. The subsequent diaspora and reintegration of her people, and even their traditional clothing and her species is long-lived, and she is somewhere between 500 and 700 years old when she joins the Enterprise-D. Times Arrow, Part I reveals that she visited Earth in 1891, Guinan reveals in Star Trek, Nemesis that she has been married 23 times. She states in Evolution that she has children, including a son who went through a phase when he wouldnt listen to anybody – something unusual in a species of listeners. Her wise counsel occasionally proves to be valuable to the crew. In one episode, for example, she tries to show Troi that she has other abilities she can use when Trois confidence is shaken because her telepathic powers stop working temporarily. In particular, she and Picard are especially close, to where they trust one another implicitly and she does indicate that Picard stood by her at a time when she was in serious trouble and that their relationship is beyond friendship, beyond family

L. A. Law is an American television legal drama series that ran for eight seasons on NBC, from September 15,1986, to May 19,1994. The series often also reflected social tensions between the senior lawyer protagonists and their less well-paid junior staff. In addition to its main cast, L. A. Sanders, James Avery, Gates McFadden, Bryan Cranston, pounder, Kevin Spacey, Richard Schiff, Carrie-Anne Moss, William H. Macy, Stephen Root, Christian Slater, and Lucy Liu. Several episodes of the show included celebrities such as Vanna White, Buddy Hackett. The show was popular with audiences and critics, and won 15 Emmy Awards throughout its run, four of which were for Outstanding Drama Series. The series was set in and around the fictitious Los Angeles-based law firm McKenzie, Brackman, Chaney and Kuzak, the exteriors for the law firm were shot at the Citigroup Center in downtown Los Angeles, which was known as the 444 Flower Building at the time. The show often combined humor and drama in the same episode. In the pilot episode of the series, only the back and hand of law partner Chaney, one of Chaneys final acts was to hire a new secretary, who began work on the morning Chaneys body is discovered. Later in that episode, in front of his partners, friends and his wife, the secretary at Chaneys eulogy reveals that she is transsexual, Chaney had been financially supporting her gender transition, and hired her as part of her real life test. She is then fired from her job by Douglas Brackman. This once caused problems when a client used him to set up her husband to be murdered, a running gag during Harry Hamlins tenure was to have his character, Michael Kuzak, always shown picking, scrutinizing, and eating pastries or fruit at the morning staff meetings. He was the one who ate from the mountains of food provided. To some extent, the sexual peccadilloes of almost the entire cast would become fodder for episodes of the series. After Grace van Owen makes a comment that Michael Kuzak would have to be a monkey before shed be interested in him, Douglas Brackman becomes involved with a sex therapist. Benny Stulwicz, an intellectually disabled clerk at the office, has sex with the disabled daughter of a client of the firm. Leland McKenzie and Rosalind Shays, antagonists, secretly become lovers, Douglas Brackman, their boss, is also arrested in the mayhem of the riots as he is on his way to get remarried. In one scene later in the series, the writers enacted an inside joke, in her final scene, the character of Rosalind Shays steps into the empty shaft and falls to her death. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War, after the Korean War, he went to the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia. There, he went on to make his debut in Thunder Road along with the theatres founder Robert Porterfield. A life member of the Actors Studio, Ryans Broadway theatre credits include Wait Until Dark, Medea, and The Price. Ryan was an original cast member on the cult TV soap opera Dark Shadows, playing Burke Devlin until he was fired from the show in June 1967 due to his alcoholism, and replaced by Anthony George. He appeared in an episode of Cannon, Fools Gold in 1971, in 1973, he played the lead in the NBC adventure show Chase, with co-stars Wayne Maunder and Reid Smith. In 1976-7, he portrayed the character on Executive Suite and worked with his future on-screen wife from Dharma & Greg, Susan Sullivan, in the short-lived series Julie Farr. Part Deux playing senator Grey Edwards, and in 1985, he portrayed Tillet Main, the patriarch of the Main family in the first North and South miniseries. He also portrayed the roles of the boyfriend of Blanche Deveraux in The Golden Girls. The Tholian Web is the ninth episode of the third season of the original American science fiction television series, Star Trek. It is episode #64, production #64, first broadcast on November 15,1968 and it was written by Judy Burns and Chet Richards and directed by Herb Wallerstein. Set in the 23rd century, the series follows the adventures of Captain James T, Kirk and the crew of the Federation starship Enterprise. In this episode, Captain Kirk is caught between dimensions while the crew of the Enterprise works to retrieve him, all the while, the Tholians are weaving a destructive energy web around the Enterprise because Spock will not leave Tholian space without his Captain. The Federation starship USS Enterprise enters a region of space while searching for her sister ship, the USS Defiant. Their sensors detect dimensional fractures in the area of space, which are draining power from all systems. They find the Defiant adrift, and Captain James T. Kirk, First Officer Spock, Chief Medical Officer Dr. McCoy, aboard Defiant, they find the crew is dead, apparently having killed each other in the midst of a mutiny. The boarding party discovers that the Defiant is slowly dissolving as it enters an interdimensional rift, at one point, McCoy is able to pass his hand through an almost invisible man and a table. With limited transporter functionality due to the rift in the fabric of space-time, the beaming takes much longer than normal, and they are almost lost. As Chief Engineer Mr. Scott tries to beam Kirk aboard, while they wait, an increasingly furious Chekov starts to go mad and lashes out, a symptom that Dr. McCoy believes is due to their proximity to the rift, as happened to the Defiants crew. McCoy urges Spock to move the Enterprise to safety but Spock refuses, believing that movement will disrupt the interphase, with two hours to go before the next interphase, the Enterprise is approached by a small, unfamiliar ship. Its captain, Commander Loskene of the Tholian Assembly, asserts that the Enterprise has violated Tholian space, Spock negotiates to get them one hour and fifty three minutes until Kirk reappears and then promises they will then leave, the Tholian vessel moves away. When the time is up, Kirk does not reappear, Spock determines that the Tholain ship disrupted the interphase, and that Kirk may still be alive but in a different location. McCoy again urges him to leave, believing that Kirk is dead, the Enterprise is attacked by Loskene, and Spock returns fire. The Tholian ship is disabled, but the Enterprise takes damage as well, a second Tholian ship joins the first, and the two begin to create the filaments of a vast energy web that cages the Enterprise. Spock determines that if the web is completed before repairs are done, the field will destroy the Enterprise. Amid further reports of crewmen going insane, Spock conducts a memorial service for Kirk. Spock and McCoy then view a tape left by Kirk meant to be played in the event of his death, which asks the two of them to work together for the benefit of the ship

StarOffice, known briefly as Oracle Open Office before being discontinued in 2011, was a proprietary office suite. It originated in 1985 as StarWriter by StarDivision, which was acquired by Sun Microsystems in 1999, Sun Microsystems, in turn, was acquired by Oracle Corporation in 2010. StarOffice supports the OpenOffice. org XML file format, as well as the OpenDocument standard and it includes templates, a macro recorder, and a software development kit. In March 2009, a study showed that StarOffice only had a 3% market share in the corporate market, in April 2011, Oracle announced the discontinuation of Oracle Open Office as part of the decision to turn OpenOffice. org into a purely community-based project. StarWriter 1.0 was written by Marco Börries in 1985 for the Zilog Z80, Börries formed StarDivision in Lüneburg the following year. It was later ported to the Amstrad CPC under CP/M and later ported to the 8086-based Amstrad PC-1512, later, the integration of the other individual programs followed as the development progressed to an Office Suite for DOS, IBMs OS/2 Warp, and for the Microsoft Windows operating-system. From this time onwards StarDivision marketed its suite under the name StarOffice, until version 4.2, StarDivision based StarOffice on the cross-platform C++ class library StarView. In 1998 StarDivision began offering StarOffice for free, Sun Microsystems acquired the company, copyright and trademark of StarOffice in 1999 for US$73.5 million, as it was supposedly cheaper than 42,000 licenses of Microsoft Office. StarSuite was the version of StarOffice with Asian language localization and it included Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese interfaces. It also included additional fonts for the East Asian market, resulting in slightly larger installation footprint, otherwise the features were identical to StarOffice. The two brands existed because a StarOffice brand was owned by company in certain Asian countries. Currently NEC produces StarOffice collaborative software in Japan, after Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems it renamed both StarOffice and StarSuite as Oracle Open Office. In 2001, Sun Microsystems announced Sun ONE Webtop – formerly known as project StarPortal – a limited release and it is based on StarOffice components. Other differences are that StarOffice only supports 12 languages, compared to over 110 for OpenOffice. org, StarWriter was the first StarOffice, with the successor being StarOffice 2.0 which included StarWriter compact, StarBase 1.0, StarDraw 1.0. StarOffice 3.0 included StarWriter 3.0, StarCalc 3.0, StarDraw 3.0, StarImage, supported platforms included DOS, Windows 3.1, OS/2, Solaris Sparc. Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes is a fictional private detective created by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. All but one are set in the Victorian or Edwardian periods, though not the first fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes is arguably the most well-known, with Guinness World Records listing him as the most portrayed movie character in history. Auguste Dupin is generally acknowledged as the first detective in fiction and served as the prototype for many that were created later, Conan Doyle once wrote, Each is a root from which a whole literature has developed. Where was the story until Poe breathed the breath of life into it. Conan Doyle repeatedly said that Holmes was inspired by the figure of Joseph Bell, a surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. Like Holmes, Bell was noted for drawing conclusions from minute observations. However, he wrote to Doyle, You are yourself Sherlock Holmes. Sir Henry Littlejohn, Chair of Medical Jurisprudence at the University of Edinburgh Medical School, is cited as an inspiration for Holmes. Littlejohn, who was also Police Surgeon and Medical Officer of Health in Edinburgh, One is thought to be Francis Tanky Smith, a policeman and master of disguise who went on to become Leicesters first private detective. Another might be Maximilien Heller, by French author Henry Cauvain and it is not known if Conan Doyle read Maximilien Heller, but in this 1871 novel, Henry Cauvain imagined a depressed, anti-social, polymath, cat-loving, and opium-smoking Paris-based detective. Details about Sherlock Holmess life, except for the adventures in the books, are scarce in Conan Doyles original stories, nevertheless, mentions of his early life and extended family paint a loose biographical picture of the detective. An estimate of Holmess age in His Last Bow places his year of birth at 1854 and his parents are not mentioned in the stories, although Holmes mentions that his ancestors were country squires. In The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter, he claims that his grandmother was sister to the French artist Vernet, without clarifying whether this was Claude Joseph, Carle. Mycroft has a civil service position as a kind of human database for all aspects of government policy. He lacks Sherlocks interest in investigation, however, preferring to spend his time at the Diogenes Club. Holmes says that he first developed his methods of deduction as an undergraduate, his earliest cases, the two take lodgings at 221B Baker Street, London, an apartment at the upper end of the street, up seventeen steps. Holmes worked as a detective for twenty-three years, with physician John Watson assisting him for seventeen and they were roommates before Watsons 1887 marriage and again after his wifes death. Their residence is maintained by their landlady, Mrs. Hudson, most of the stories are frame narratives, written from Watsons point of view as summaries of the detectives most interesting cases

Holodeck

The holodeck, and holographic technology in general, is a plot device used in stories set within the Star Trek universe. It is used to stories with locations and characters that could not otherwise exist in the Star Trek setting. Although Star Treks conception of technology is fictional, some scientists have predicted that virtual reality tools similar to the holodeck will become a consumer-ready product by 2024. Most holodeck programs shown in the run in first person subjective mode, in which the user actively interacts with the program. Writer Phil Farrand has often pointed out how in many episodes matter from the holodeck that gets on a person still exists when the real person exits the holodeck. In Encounter at Farpoint, Wesley Crusher falls into a holodeck stream, in The Big Goodbye, Picard has lipstick on his cheek after encountering a holodeck simulation of a 20th-century woman. In Elementary, Dear Data, Data and Geordi La Forge exit the holodeck with a piece of paper that originated in the holodeck and this could be explained using replicated rather than holographic matter. In most episodes, the holodeck is controlled by voice commands and they also include safety protocols to protect the users. Some users may develop an addiction to the holodeck, leading to them spending unhealthy amounts of time there and this was demonstrated by the Starfleet human character Reginald Barclay in the Voyager episode Pathfinder and The Next Generation episode Hollow Pursuits. In the timeline of the universe, the concept of a holodeck was first shown to humans in an encounter with the Xyrillian race in the Star Trek. In real-time, the holodeck is first presented as a called the Rec room within the Star Trek animated series (released in 1974. During the episode The Practical Joker, Dr McCoy, Sulu, Holodeck variations of being by the sea, in a forest, falling down a pit and being trapped in a snow-storm all having physical characteristics place the lives of McCoy, Sulu and Uhura at risk. When they were running from the Borg on his starship they hid in the holodeck, the Star Trek Holodeck was inspired by New York inventor and holographer, Gene Dolgoff, who is also the inventor of the digital projector. His holography laboratory, built in 1964, was the first holography lab in New York City, in 1973, Dolgoff was giving a technical paper on his holographic model of the human brain at a conference in Prague. There he met Melanie Toyofuku, also based in New York, Dolgoff had won 4th prize in the student paper contest in 1968 in which he described how such a holographic TV system could work. Roddenberry wrote the concept into Star Trek, The Next Generation, however, the concept had already been tested in 1974 in Star Trek, the Animated Series. Starfleet personnel use holodecks for training, diagnostics and recreation, the Emergency Medical Hologram on ships such as USS Voyager applies holodeck technology to present a single character within the otherwise natural environment of the ships sick bay. An example of the holodecks recreational functions are the holosuites that are owned and rented out—often for sexual purposes—by Quark on Deep Space Nine, writing stories and plotlines for the holodeck is an activity pursued by people known as holonovelists

Geordi La Forge

Portrayed by LeVar Burton, he served as helmsman of the USS Enterprise-D in the first season, then occupied the role of the chief engineer for the rest of the series and in the films. La Forge has been blind since birth and uses devices that allow him to see - a VISOR in the series. Gene Roddenberry created the character in honor of George La Forge, a fan of the original Star Trek series. LeVar Burton auditioned for the role in 1986 and he had previously appeared in Roots and other major network shows. He stated that years ago I was doing a TV movie called Emergency Room, but there was a producer on that show, a man named Bob Justman. And I said was Gene Roddenberry involved, and I said I’ll be right there. Roddenberry was very pleased with Burton at his first audition, throughout the series, Burton was equipped with Geordi La Forges trademark VISOR, which he found extremely unpleasant to wear, It’s pretty much a living hell. 85 to 90% of my vision is taken away when the VISOR goes on, I bumped into everything the first season–Light stands, overhead microphones, cables at my feet–I tripped over it all. So it’s a sort of conundrum – the blind man, who puts on the VISOR and sees more than everyone else around him. So I had a headache for about six years. During the series, Burtons character was Chief Engineering Officer, Burton commented how hard it sometimes was to straight-facedly deliver the Treknobabble used by La Forge in these scenes, Technobabble brings with it its own challenge. I’m not an engineer, I just played one on TV, the methodology that I found most successful was to really spit it out as fast as I possibly could. Giving the illusion that I knew what I was talking about when, in fact, I think the holodeck was a very cool concept, you know. You can create a three dimensional reality, I mean, how cool is that. Following the end of the series, Burton has stated how much he profited from The Next Generation, When I got married my best man was Brent and my groomsmen were Michael and Jonathan, no matter what, we will always be family to each other. There have been times when there have been feuds within the family, in the Star Trek fictional universe, a VISOR is a device used by the blind to artificially provide them with a sense of sight. The sensors are located on the side, that covers the eyes and attaches at small input jacks implanted in the temples. The only VISOR seen on screen was used by Geordi La Forge, VISOR is an acronym for Visual Instrument and Sensory Organ Replacement, though the complete term appeared only in novelizations and other written tie-in products, and never in the series

Levardis Robert Martyn LeVar Burton Jr. is an American actor, presenter, director, and author. He has also directed a number of episodes for various iterations of Star Trek. Burton was born to American parents at the U. S. Army Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in West Germany and his mother, Erma Gene, was a social worker, administrator, and educator. His father, Levardis Robert Martyn Burton, was a photographer for the U. S. Army Signal Corps at the time he was stationed at Landstuhl, Burton and his two sisters were raised by his mother in Sacramento, California. Burton was raised Roman Catholic and, at the age of thirteen, entered St. Pius X seminary in Galt, California, Burton attended St. Pius X Seminary in Galt and graduated in the class of 1974. While in seminary, he works by the philosophers Lao-Tzu, Nietzsche. At seventeen, Burton left the seminary to enroll at the University of Southern California with a drama scholarship, while at the University of Southern California, Burton was a member of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity. He is a graduate of the University of Southern Californias School of Theatre, LeVar Burton made his acting debut in 1977 when he played Kunta Kinte in the ABC award-winning drama series Roots, based on the novel by Alex Haley. Burtons audition for the role of Kinte was the first of his professional career, as a result of his performance, he was nominated for the Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama Series. Burton reprised the role of Kunta Kinte in the 1988 television film Roots, when asked about the societal impacts of Roots, Burton is quoted as saying, It expanded the consciousness of people. Blacks and whites began to see each other as human beings, and if you throw a pebble into the pond, youre going to get ripples. I think the constant is change, and its always slow. Anything that happens overnight is lacking in foundation, Roots is part of a changing trend, and its still being played out. In 1986, he appeared in the video for the song Word Up. by the funk/R&B group Cameo. Burton accepted an invitation to host Rebop, a series designed for young people ages 9–15. Burton was the host and executive producer of Reading Rainbow starting in 1983 for PBS, the series ran for 23 seasons, making it one of the longest-running childrens programs on the network. Furthermore, the series garnered over 200 broadcast awards over its run, Burton himself won 12 Emmy awards as host and producer of the show. Sir Patrick Stewart OBE is an English actor whose career has included roles on stage, television, and film in a career spanning almost six decades. In 1993, TV Guide named Stewart the Best Dramatic Television Actor of the 1980s, in 2010, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to drama. He has two brothers, Geoffrey and Trevor. Stewart grew up in a household with domestic violence from his father. He spent much of his childhood in Jarrow, as a result of his wartime experience during the Dunkirk evacuation, his father suffered from what was then known as combat fatigue. In a 2008 interview, Stewart said, My father was a very potent individual, a powerful man. It was said that when he strode onto the parade ground and it was many, many years before I realized how my father inserted himself into my work. Ive grown a moustache for Macbeth and my father didnt have one, but when I looked in the mirror just before I went on stage I saw my fathers face staring straight back at me. Stewart attended Crowlees Church of England Junior and Infants School and he attributes his acting career to a teacher of English named Cecil Dormand, who put a copy of Shakespeare in my hand said, Now get up on your feet and perform. In 1951, aged 11, having failed the examination, he entered Mirfield Secondary Modern School. Around the same time he met the actor Brian Blessed at a Mytholmroyd drama course, at the age of 15, Stewart left school and increased his participation in local theatre. His brother tells the story that Stewart had been attending rehearsals during work time, Stewart also trained as a boxer. At the age of eighteen, he lost his hair due to suffering from Alopecia areata, an experience he found traumatic, for him, acting served as a means of self-expression. Both Stewart and his friend Blessed later received grants to attend the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, following a period with Manchesters Library Theatre, he became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966, remaining with them until 1982. He was an Associate Artist of the company in 1968 and he appeared with actors such as Ben Kingsley and Ian Richardson. In January 1967, he made his debut TV appearance on Coronation Street as a Fire Officer and he made his Broadway debut as Snout in Peter Brooks legendary production of A Midsummer Nights Dream, then moved to the Royal National Theatre in the early 1980s. Over the years, Stewart took roles in major television series without ever becoming a household name. He appeared as Vladimir Lenin in Fall of Eagles, Sejanus in I, Claudius, Karla in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Smileys People and he even took the romantic male lead in the 1975 BBC adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskells North and South

The following are the main characters in the Star Trek, New Frontier series of novels. Captain Mackenzie Calhoun is a member of the Xenexian species, a race that, Calhoun led the Xenexian revolution that freed them from the Danteri, a revolution that ended before Calhoun turned 20. After a visit from Stargazer captain Jean-Luc Picard, whom he had seen in a vision prior to the meeting, Calhoun left his homeworld. After a falling-out after the surrounding the death of his captain on the USS Grissom, Calhoun left Starfleet. His cowboy-like command style sometimes irks his co-workers, but he has always been able to get the job done. Peter David has stated that the character of Commander Quentin Stone from his 1991 TNG novel, A Rock, Calhoun is the only non-TV Star Trek character to be the subject of an action figure, the figure comes with a sword, and is highly detailed. James Cawley, who plays Kirk in Star Trek, New Voyages, made a guest appearance in the Star Trek, lt. Commander Elizabeth Shelby first appeared in the TNG episodes The Best of Both Worlds Parts 1 and 2, where she was played by Elizabeth Dennehy. Shelby was assigned to the USS Excalibur some years before New Frontier under the command of Captain Korsmo and she was romantically involved with Calhoun during her time at Starfleet Academy. Burgoyne 172, a member of the Hermat species, is neither male nor exactly female. Burgoyne has become involved with Dr. Selar, and together they have one child. In the novel Treason, when Selar is manipulated into kidnapping Macs child, seeking to make amends, Selar decides to remove Burgoynes hurt by using a mind meld to erase all memories of their relationship. Doctor Selar, a Vulcan, originally appeared in the TNG episode The Schizoid Man as a lieutenant and she was played by Suzie Plakson. She is the Chief Medical Officer onboard the Excalibur and it is revealed in the opening New Frontier novel story arc that her husband, Voltak, suffered a fatal heart attack years earlier when they were consummating their marriage during pon farr. As a result, she never completed the act, and was in a state of incomplete pon farr until she met the Excaliburs chief engineer. The two began a relationship, and Selar bore them a son, Xyon, in atoning for her act by rescuing Cwansi, Selar sacrificed herself by destroying the Dmyurjs base of operations in an explosion that took her life. Previous to that, she decided to ease the hurt she had done to Burgoyne by using a mind meld to erase the pain from his memories of their relationship. Robin Lefler served for a time on the USS Enterprise-D. Lefler was later assigned as a navigator for the Excalibur, during this time, she finally rediscovered her missing mother, Morgan. Lefler later married Si Cwan and settled with him on a planet in the Thallonian Empire, after Si Cwans death she gave birth to his child, Cwansi, and briefly ruled the Thallonian world before leaving with the child for their own safety
