Grammar School at Leeds

The Grammar School at Leeds is an independent fee-paying school in Leeds, England, created on 4 August 2005 by the merger of Leeds Grammar School and Leeds Girls High School. The schools merged in September 2008, at point the school was opened to both sexes. The school is situated on two sites, the school and junior school at Alwoodley, while the former Leeds Girls High School site in Headingley is used by the infant school. The school operates as a school, classes for girls. Junior school and sixth classes are coeducational. A key element of the school is the eight school houses and they are, Eddison House — named after Anne Eddison, of the Yorkshire Ladies Council of Education who helped set up Leeds Girls High School. Ermystead House — named after William Ermystead, a priest who donated properties to Leeds Grammar School in 1552, Ford House — named after John Ford, a founding member of the LGHS Council. Harrison House — named after John Harrison, benefactor, who built Leeds Grammar Schools third site on North Street in 1642, Lawson House — named after Godfrey Lawson, Mayor of Leeds, who endowed the Lawson Library, the oldest library in the city. Lupton House — named after Frances Lupton, who helped found LGHS, and Elinor Lupton, Powell House — named after Helena Langthorne Powell, the second Headmistress of LGHS, who established its move to Headingley, where it remained until 2008. Sheafield House — named after William Sheafield, who is thought of as the founder of Leeds Grammar School in 1552. The Grammar School at Leeds was established by the merger of Leeds Grammar School, the schools operated on two separate sites some distance between each other. Leeds Girls High School operated from three sites in Headingley, whilst Leeds Grammar School had a 138-acre modern campus in Alwoodley. When the schools merged in 2008, four sections were created, the junior and senior schools and sixth form operate from the expanded Alwoodley Gates site. The Alwoodley site was redeveloped from 2007 to 2008, and contains the sixth form and maths departments, rose Court Nursery & Pre-Prep School operates in Headingley from the refurbished Ford House belonging to Leeds Girls High School and a nursery extension. The rest of the Leeds Girls High School site is surplus to requirements awaiting an application for planning permission for residential housing. The current principal and chief executive is Mrs Sue Woodroofe, previously headteacher of British School of Brussels, Woodroofe was brought up in Yorkshire and completed her secondary education at York College for Girls, before training at Durham University as a teacher of English and History. The previous principal and chief executive was Michael Gibbons, previously headmaster of Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Gibbons was educated at the City of Leicester Grammar School and gained his degree from Kings College London. For example, pupils do not have to follow the National Curriculum. Seven of the older, expensive and more schools catering for the 13–18 age-range in England. The term public being derived from the fact that they were open to pupils regardless of where they lived or their religion, prep schools, educate younger children up to the age of 13 to prepare them for entry to the public schools and other independent schools. Some former grammar schools converted to an independent fee paying model following the 1965 Circular 10/65 which marked the end of their state funding, others converted into comprehensive schools. There are around 2,500 independent schools in the UK, in addition to charging tuition fees, many also benefit from gifts, charitable endowments and charitable status. Many of these schools are members of the Independent Schools Council and these schools were founded as part of the church and were under their complete dominion. However, it was during the late 14th & early 15th centuries that the first schools, winchester & Oswestry were the first of their kind and paved the way for the establishment of the modern Public school. These were often established for scholars from poor or disadvantaged backgrounds, however, English law has always regarded education as a charitable end in itself. For instance, the Queens Scholarships founded at Westminster in 1560, are for the sons of decayd gentlemen, also, facilities already provided by the charitable foundation for a few scholars could profitably be extended to further paying pupils. After a time, such fees would eclipse the original charitable income, in 2009 senior boarding schools were charging fees of between £16,000 and nearly £30,000 per annum. However, majority of the independent schools today are still registered as a charity, christs Hospital in Horsham is one of the examples, large proposition of its students are funded by its charitable foundation or by various benefactors. Most public schools developed significantly during the 18th and 19th centuries, under a number of forward-looking headmasters leading public schools created a curriculum based heavily on classics and physical activity for boys and young men of the upper and upper middle classes. They were schools for the elite of Victorian politics, armed forces. Often successful businessmen would send their sons to a school as a mark of participation in the elite. More recently heads of schools have been emphasising that senior pupils now play a much reduced role in disciplining. To an extent, the school system influenced the school systems of the British Empire. Until 1975 there had been a group of 179 academically selective schools drawing on both private and state funding, the direct grant grammar schools, the Direct Grant Grammar Schools Regulations 1975 required these schools to choose between full state funding as comprehensive schools and full independence. Leeds /liːdz/ is a city in West Yorkshire, England. Historically in Yorkshires West Riding, the history of Leeds can be traced to the 5th century when the name referred to an area of the Kingdom of Elmet. The name has applied to many administrative entities over the centuries. It changed from being the appellation of a small borough in the 13th century, through several incarnations. In the 17th and 18th centuries Leeds became a centre for the production. During the Industrial Revolution, Leeds developed into a mill town, wool was the dominant industry but flax, engineering, iron foundries, printing. From being a market town in the valley of the River Aire in the 16th century Leeds expanded and absorbed the surrounding villages to become a populous urban centre by the mid-20th century. The city has the third largest jobs total by local authority area with 480,000 in employment and self-employment at the beginning of 2015. Leeds is also ranked as a world city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. Leeds is served by four universities, and has the fourth largest student population in the country and has the fourth largest urban economy. After London, Leeds is the largest legal and financial centre in the UK, with over 30 national and international banks located in the city. Leeds is also the UKs third largest manufacturing centre with around 1,800 firms and 39,000 employees, the largest sub-sectors are engineering, printing and publishing, food and drink, chemicals and medical technology. Outside of London, Leeds has the third busiest railway station, Public transport, rail and road communications networks in the region are focused on Leeds and there are a number of twinning arrangements with towns and cities in other countries. The name Leeds derives from the old Brythonic word Ladenses meaning people of the fast-flowing river and this name originally referred to the forested area covering most of the Brythonic kingdom of Elmet, which existed during the 5th century into the early 7th century. An inhabitant of Leeds is locally known as a Loiner, a word of uncertain origin, the term Leodensian is also used, from the citys Latin name. Leeds developed as a town in the Middle Ages as part of the local agricultural economy. Before the Industrial Revolution it became a centre for the manufacture of woollen cloth. Leeds handled one sixth of Englands export trade in 1770, growth, initially in textiles, was accelerated by the building of the Aire and Calder Navigation in 1699 and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in 1816

West Yorkshire

West Yorkshire is a metropolitan county in England. It is an inland and in relative terms upland county having eastward-draining valleys while taking in moors of the Pennines and has a population of 2.2 million, West Yorkshire came into existence as a metropolitan county in 1974 after the passage of the Local Government Act 1972. West Yorkshire consists of five boroughs and shares borders with the counties of Derbyshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, North Yorkshire. In the heart of the county is Leeds Bradford International Airport, West Yorkshire County Council was abolished in 1986 so its five districts became effectively unitary authorities. However, the county, which covers an area of 2,029 square kilometres, continues to exist in law. West Yorkshire includes the West Yorkshire Urban Area, which is the most built-up, West Yorkshire Metropolitan County Council inherited the use of West Riding County Hall at Wakefield, opened in 1898, from the West Riding County Council in 1974. Since 1987 it has been the headquarters of Wakefield City Council, the county initially had a two-tier structure of local government with a strategic-level county council and five districts providing most services. In 1986, throughout England the metropolitan county councils were abolished, the functions of the county council were devolved to the boroughs, joint-boards covering fire, police and public transport, and to other special joint arrangements. Organisations such as the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive continue to operate on this basis, although the county council was abolished, West Yorkshire continues to form a metropolitan and ceremonial county with a Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire and a High Sheriff. Wakefields Parish Church was raised to cathedral status in 1888 and after the elevation of Wakefield to diocese, Wakefield Council immediately sought city status and this was granted in July 1888. However the industrial revolution, which changed West and South Yorkshire significantly, led to the growth of Leeds and Bradford, Leeds was granted city status in 1893 and Bradford in 1897. The name of Leeds Town Hall reflects the fact that at its opening in 1858 Leeds was not yet a city, the county borders, going anticlockwise from the west, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Derbyshire, South Yorkshire and North Yorkshire. It lies almost entirely on rocks of carboniferous age which form the southern Pennine fringes in the west, in the extreme east of the metropolitan county there are younger deposits of magnesian limestone. The Bradford and Calderdale areas are dominated by the scenery of the slopes of the Pennines, dropping from upland in the west down to the east. There is a conjunction of large scale industry, urban areas. The dense network of roads, canals and railways and urban development, the carboniferous rocks of the Yorkshire coalfield further east have produced a rolling landscape with hills, escarpments and broad valleys. In this landscape there is evidence of both current and former industrial activity. There are numerous derelict or converted mine buildings and recently landscaped former spoil heaps, the scenery is a mixture of built up areas, industrial land with some dereliction, and farmed open country

England is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. It shares land borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west, the Irish Sea lies northwest of England and the Celtic Sea lies to the southwest. England is separated from continental Europe by the North Sea to the east, the country covers five-eighths of the island of Great Britain in its centre and south, and includes over 100 smaller islands such as the Isles of Scilly, and the Isle of Wight. England became a state in the 10th century, and since the Age of Discovery. The Industrial Revolution began in 18th-century England, transforming its society into the worlds first industrialised nation, Englands terrain mostly comprises low hills and plains, especially in central and southern England. However, there are uplands in the north and in the southwest, the capital is London, which is the largest metropolitan area in both the United Kingdom and the European Union. In 1801, Great Britain was united with the Kingdom of Ireland through another Act of Union to become the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. In 1922 the Irish Free State seceded from the United Kingdom, leading to the latter being renamed the United Kingdom of Great Britain, the name England is derived from the Old English name Englaland, which means land of the Angles. The Angles were one of the Germanic tribes that settled in Great Britain during the Early Middle Ages, the Angles came from the Angeln peninsula in the Bay of Kiel area of the Baltic Sea. The earliest recorded use of the term, as Engla londe, is in the ninth century translation into Old English of Bedes Ecclesiastical History of the English People. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, its spelling was first used in 1538. The earliest attested reference to the Angles occurs in the 1st-century work by Tacitus, Germania, the etymology of the tribal name itself is disputed by scholars, it has been suggested that it derives from the shape of the Angeln peninsula, an angular shape. An alternative name for England is Albion, the name Albion originally referred to the entire island of Great Britain. The nominally earliest record of the name appears in the Aristotelian Corpus, specifically the 4th century BC De Mundo, in it are two very large islands called Britannia, these are Albion and Ierne. But modern scholarly consensus ascribes De Mundo not to Aristotle but to Pseudo-Aristotle, the word Albion or insula Albionum has two possible origins. Albion is now applied to England in a poetic capacity. Another romantic name for England is Loegria, related to the Welsh word for England, Lloegr, the earliest known evidence of human presence in the area now known as England was that of Homo antecessor, dating to approximately 780,000 years ago. A geographic coordinate system is a coordinate system used in geography that enables every location on Earth to be specified by a set of numbers, letters or symbols. The coordinates are chosen such that one of the numbers represents a vertical position. A common choice of coordinates is latitude, longitude and elevation, to specify a location on a two-dimensional map requires a map projection. The invention of a coordinate system is generally credited to Eratosthenes of Cyrene. Ptolemy credited him with the adoption of longitude and latitude. Ptolemys 2nd-century Geography used the prime meridian but measured latitude from the equator instead. Mathematical cartography resumed in Europe following Maximus Planudes recovery of Ptolemys text a little before 1300, in 1884, the United States hosted the International Meridian Conference, attended by representatives from twenty-five nations. Twenty-two of them agreed to adopt the longitude of the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, the Dominican Republic voted against the motion, while France and Brazil abstained. France adopted Greenwich Mean Time in place of local determinations by the Paris Observatory in 1911, the latitude of a point on Earths surface is the angle between the equatorial plane and the straight line that passes through that point and through the center of the Earth. Lines joining points of the same latitude trace circles on the surface of Earth called parallels, as they are parallel to the equator, the north pole is 90° N, the south pole is 90° S. The 0° parallel of latitude is designated the equator, the plane of all geographic coordinate systems. The equator divides the globe into Northern and Southern Hemispheres, the longitude of a point on Earths surface is the angle east or west of a reference meridian to another meridian that passes through that point. All meridians are halves of great ellipses, which converge at the north and south poles, the prime meridian determines the proper Eastern and Western Hemispheres, although maps often divide these hemispheres further west in order to keep the Old World on a single side. The antipodal meridian of Greenwich is both 180°W and 180°E, the combination of these two components specifies the position of any location on the surface of Earth, without consideration of altitude or depth. The grid formed by lines of latitude and longitude is known as a graticule, the origin/zero point of this system is located in the Gulf of Guinea about 625 km south of Tema, Ghana. Leeds Grammar School

Leeds Grammar School was an independent school in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. In August 2005 it merged with Leeds Girls High School to form The Grammar School at Leeds, the two schools physically united in September 2008. The school was founded in 1552 by William Sheafield to provide free, despite 1552 being the traditional date for the foundation of the school, there is some evidence to suggest that the school existed as early as 1341. In 1805, the school was the subject of a ruling by Lord Eldon that set a precedent affecting grammar schools throughout England, Leeds Grammar School was founded in 1552, following the death of the Reverend William Sheafield in July of that year. The date for the foundation of the school remains in doubt to this day. The schools first site is thought to have been in The Calls, by the River Aire, however, by about 1579 the school was in the New Chapel building at the head of Headingley Lane, where it remained until 1624. Harrisons school was located on North Lane, on the site of the current Grand Theatre, through the years, the school grew steadily in numbers and in reputation. Harrisons building was added onto in the 1640s by a new library, the Lawson Library remains with the school to this day, making it the oldest library in Leeds. Towards the end of the century, demand for Latin and Greek was falling, while Leeds was growing as a centre of commerce. In 1791 the trustees proposed to appoint a master, to teach writing and accounts. The plan was opposed by the Master and Usher, with the two sides unable to agree, a suit in the Court of Chancery began in 1795. He did however offer as a compromise that other subjects might be taught, on the death of the master in 1815, the trustees appointed one of their number as acting master, and were able to effect the desired changes. By 1857, the city of Leeds was growing due to the Industrial Revolution. The city conditions were dirty and Harrisons buildings inadequate for a Victorian education, therefore in 1857 the decision was made by Rev. Alfred Barry to move the school to new premises next to Woodhouse Moor. The building, in Gothic Revival style, was opened in June 1859, the building was designed by Edward Middleton Barry, brother of the then headmaster, Rev. Alfred Barry, after whom one of the eight houses was named. At that time the school roll numbered fewer than 100 boys, serious consideration was given in the 1920s to moving the school to Lawnswood - the current site of Leeds Universitys playing fields. The school was in the Direct Grant scheme in the 1950s to 1970s, throughout the 20th century the school continued to expand, with the building of a new Swimming pool, Sports Hall, Theatre, a Design and Technology department, Assembly Hall and Classroom block. By the 1990s, the roll had risen to over 1,100 boys, the Woodhouse Moor premises are now occupied by the Leeds University Business School

Female education

Female education is a catch-all term for a complex set of issues and debates surrounding education for girls and women. It includes areas of gender equality and access to education, while the feminist movement certainly promoted the importance of the issues attached to female education the discussion is wide-ranging and by no means narrowly defined. It may include, for example, AIDS education, universal education, meaning state-provided primary and secondary education independent of gender is not yet a global norm, even if it is assumed in most developed countries. In some Western countries, women have surpassed men at many levels of education, for example, in the United States in 2005/2006, women earned 62% of associate degrees, 58% of bachelors degrees, 60% of masters degrees, and 50% of doctorates. Education for disabled women has also improved, in 2011, Giusi Spagnolo became the first woman with Down Syndrome to graduate college in Europe. Improving girls educational levels has been demonstrated to have clear impacts on the health and economic future of young women, the infant mortality rate of babies whose mothers have received primary education is half that of children whose mothers are illiterate. In the poorest countries of the world, 50% of girls do not attend secondary school, yet, research shows that every extra year of school for girls increases their lifetime income by 15%. Improving female education, and thus the potential of women, improves the standard of living for their own children. Yet, many barriers to education for girls remain, in some African countries, such as Burkina Faso, girls are unlikely to attend school for such basic reasons as a lack of private latrine facilities for girls. Education increases a level of health and health awareness. It can lead to rates of barrier and chemical contraceptive use. It has been shown, in addition, to increase communication with their partners and their employers. Education and Violence Against Women In Pakistan, a relationship was found between the formal level of education a woman attains and the likelihood of violence against that woman. The researcher used snowball convenient sampling, a method where participants are referred. Ethical and privacy issues made this the most convenient method, an informant played a major role in gathering information that was then cross-checked. The sample of victims of violence was made up of married women from ages 18–60 both from rural and urban communities, the study described different forms of physical violence that are already present and provided an idea of what women go through, even across communities. Education in this study was stressed to be the solution and a necessity in eliminating violence, a discussion of political and social barriers is needed. The relationship is a lot more complicated than it seems, women can be illiterate, immigrant Latina Women are a highly affected group by domestic violence

Grammar school

The original purpose of medieval grammar schools was the teaching of Latin. Over time the curriculum was broadened, first to include Ancient Greek, and later English and other European languages, natural sciences, mathematics, history, geography, and other subjects. In the late Victorian era grammar schools were reorganised to provide secondary education throughout England and Wales, Grammar schools of these types were also established in British territories overseas, where they have evolved in different ways. With the move to comprehensive schools in the 1960s and 1970s, some grammar schools became fully independent and charged fees. In both cases, many of these schools kept grammar school in their names, more recently, a number of state grammar schools still retaining their selective intake gained academy status, meaning that they are independent of the Local Education Authority. Some parts of England retain forms of the Tripartite System, some of the remaining grammar schools can trace their histories to before the 16th century. The schools were attached to cathedrals and monasteries, teaching Latin – the language of the church – to future priests, other subjects required for religious work were occasionally added, including music and verse, astronomy and mathematics and law. With the foundation of the ancient universities from the late 12th century, grammar schools became the point to a liberal arts education. Pupils were usually educated in schools up to the age of 14, after which they would look to universities. An example of a grammar school founded by a medieval borough corporation unconnected with church or university is Bridgnorth Grammar School. During the English Reformation in the 16th century, most cathedral schools were closed and replaced by new foundations funded from the dissolution of the monasteries. For example, the oldest extant schools in Wales – Christ College, Brecon, with the increased emphasis on studying the scriptures after the Reformation, many schools added Greek and, in a few cases, Hebrew. The teaching of languages was hampered by a shortage of non-Latin type. Many of these are commemorated in annual Founders Day services and ceremonies at surviving schools. The usual pattern was to create an endowment to pay the wages of a master to instruct boys in Latin. The school day ran from 6 a. m. to 5 p. m. with a two-hour break for lunch, in winter, school started at 7 a. m. Most of the day was spent in the learning of Latin. To encourage fluency, some schoolmasters recommended punishing any pupil who spoke in English, by the end of their studies at age 14, they would be quite familiar with the great Latin authors, and with Latin drama and rhetoric

A joint-stock company is a business entity in which different stocks can be bought and owned by shareholders. Each shareholder owns company stock in proportion, evidenced by their shares and that allows for the unequal ownership of a business with some shareholders owning more of a company than others. Shareholders are able to transfer their shares to others without any effects to the existence of the company. In modern-day corporate law, the existence of a company is often synonymous with incorporation. Therefore, joint-stock companies are known as corporations or limited companies. Some jurisdictions still provide the possibility of registering joint-stock companies without limited liability, in the United Kingdom and other countries that have adopted its model of company law, they are known as unlimited companies. In the United States, they are simply as joint-stock companies. Ownership of stock refers to a number of privileges. The company is managed on behalf of the shareholders by a board of directors, the shareholders also vote to accept or reject an annual report and audited set of accounts. Individual shareholders can sometimes stand for directorships within the company if a vacancy occurs, the shareholders are usually liable for any of the company debts that extend beyond the companys ability to pay. Meanwhile, the limit of their liability extends only to the value of their shareholding. The concept of limited liability largely accounts for the success of this form of business organization, ordinary shares entitle the owner to a share in the companys net profit. It is calculated in the way, the net profit is divided by the total number of owned shares, producing a notional value per share. An individuals share of the profit is thus the dividend multiplied by the number of shares owned, finding the earliest joint-stock company is a matter of definition. The earliest records of joint stock company can be found in China during the Song Dynasty, the Swedish company Stora has documented a stock transfer for an eighth of the company as early as 1288. In more recent history, the earliest joint-stock company recognized in England was the Company of Merchant Adventurers to New Lands, muscovy Company, which had a monopoly on trade between Moscow and London, was chartered soon after in 1555. The Royal Charter effectively gave the newly created Honourable East India Company a 15-year monopoly on all trade in the East Indies. The Company transformed from a trading venture to one that ruled India and exploited its resources, as it acquired auxiliary governmental and military functions

Headingley
–
Headingley is a suburb of Leeds in West Yorkshire, England. It is approximately two out of the city centre, to the north west along the A660 road. Headingley is notable for being the location of the Beckett Park campus for Leeds Beckett University, Headingley is first mentioned in the Domesday Book as Hedingelei or Hedingeleia in 1086 where it is recorded that Ilbert de Lacy held 7 carucates of land. The name is thought to derive from Old English Headinga of the descendants of Heada + lēah open ground, headda has sometimes been identified with Saint Hædde. However, a coffin found near Beckett Park in 1995 suggests there may have been an earlier settlement in late Roman or post-Roman times. From Viking times, Headingley was the centre of the wapentake of Skyrack, or Siaraches, the name may refer to an oak tree that was used as a meeting place for settling legal disputes and raising armies. An ancient oak, said to be the Shire Oak, stood to the north of St Michaels Church until 1941, and gives its name to two pubs, the Original Oak and the Skyrack. A map of 1711 shows Headingley as having a chapel, cottages and farmsteads scattered around a triangle of land formed by the merging of routes north, west. Enclosed fields were situated around the settlement with a tract of common land, Headingley Moor. In an 1801 census, Headingleys population is given as 300, an 1829 Act of Parliament enclosed Headingley Moor and the land was placed for sale. Around 30 workers cottages had by then encroached upon the fringes of the moor before 1829, land in this vicinity was generally cheaper than that at Headingley Hill as it failed to attract the building of affluent villas. This brought about the building of smaller terraced housing around Moor Road, in the mid 19th century, Far Headingley had begun to develop over what was largely unclaimed common land. Headingley continued to be a village until the expansion of Leeds during the Industrial Revolution and became a suburb where the rich moved to escape the filth. In 1840, it became the site of Leeds Zoological and Botanical Gardens, despite the opening of Headingley railway station, serving the gardens, in 1849, the zoo was a loss-making venture and closed in 1858. The bear pit still survives and can be seen on Cardigan Road, the Meanwood Beck, to the east of the village, was a source of water for the early inhabitants and later provided a source of power for the Victorians of Leeds. The Leeds Tramway terminated at a depot at Far Headingley from 1875 to 1959, improved transport facilitated further growth and attracted many more affluent middle class inhabitants. The tramway perhaps ended Headingleys village status and made it into a suburb of Leeds, with exception of Beckett Park and the surrounding area, most of Headingley had been developed by the beginning of the 20th century. In a 1911 census the population of Headingley was in excess of 46,000, the area has a history of student inhabitation, with Leeds Metropolitan University having a campus at Beckett Park in Headingley

Robert Thompson (designer)

Robert Thompson was a British furniture maker. He lived in Kilburn, North Yorkshire, where he set up a business manufacturing oak furniture and this chance remark led to him carving a mouse and this remained part of his work from this point onwards. ITV is a commercial TV network in the United Kingdom. Since the passing of the Broadcasting Act 1990 its legal name has been Channel 3, to distinguish it from the analogue channels at the time, namely BBC1, BBC2. ITV is a network of channels that operate regional television services as well as sharing programmes between each other to be displayed on the entire network. In recent years, several of companies have merged so currently the fifteen franchises are in the hands of two companies. With the exception of Northern Ireland, the ITV brand is the used by ITV plc for the Channel 3 service in these areas. In Northern Ireland, ITV plc uses the brand name UTV, STV Group plc, uses the STV brand for its two franchises of central and northern Scotland. The origins of ITV lie in the passing of the Television Act 1954, the act created the Independent Television Authority to heavily regulate the industry and to award franchises. The first six franchises were awarded in 1954 for London, the Midlands, the first ITV network to launch was Londons Associated-Rediffusion on 22 September 1955, with the Midlands and North services launching in February 1956 and May 1956 respectively. Following these launches, the ITA awarded more franchises until the country was covered by fourteen regional stations. Following the 1993 changes, ITV as a network began to consolidate with several companies doing so to save money by ceasing the duplication of services present when they were all separate companies. The ITV Network is not owned or operated by one company, since 2016 the fifteen licences are held by two companies, with the majority held by ITV Broadcasting Limited, part of ITV plc. The network is regulated by the media regulator Ofcom who is responsible for awarding the broadcast licences, the last major review of the Channel 3 franchises was in 1991, with all operators licences having been renewed between 1999 and 2002 and again from 2014 without a further contest. However, due to amalgamation of several of companies since the creation of ITV Network Limited. Approved by Ofcom, this results in ITV plc commissioning and funding the network schedule, all licensees have the right to opt out of network programming, however many do not due to pressures from the parent company or because of limited resources. The network also needs to produce accessible output containing subtitles, signing, in exchange for this programming, the ITV network is available on all platforms free to air and can be found at the top of the EPG of all providers. Since the launch of the platform in 1998, all of the ITV licensees have received gifted capacity on the terrestrial television platform. At present, the companies are able to broadcast additional channels and all choose to broadcast the ITV plc owned ITV2, ITV3, ITV4 and CITV in their region. Monroe is a British medical drama television series created and written by Peter Bowker and produced by Mammoth Screen for the ITV network. The series follows a neurosurgeon named Gabriel Monroe, played by James Nesbitt, the six-part series was commissioned by ITV as one of a number of replacements for its long-running police drama series The Bill, which was cancelled in 2010. Filming on Monroe began in Leeds in September 2010, with production based in the old Leeds Girls High School in Headingley, the first episode was broadcast on ITV on 10 March 2011 to strong ratings. A second series followed in 2012, on 14 November 2012, it was announced that ITV had cancelled Monroe due to low viewing figures. ITVs director of drama Laura Mackie told The Stage that the series would be grown-up and would be based around a single character, like ITVs Doc Martin. Bowker told the Media Guardian that he had been inspired to create a series about a neurologist after his daughter was diagnosed with a benign brain tumour. Independent production company Mammoth Screen developed the series with Bowker, having worked with him on his Wuthering Heights adaptation. The drama entered the stage in March 2010, when Laura Mackie. Formal greenlighting was expected to happen in the first week of April 2010, film director Paul McGuigan signed on as lead director of Monroe. McGuigan researched the nature of the series by meeting with neurosurgeons, steve Lawes, with whom McGuigan worked on his other television series, Sherlock, was originally announced as the director of photography. McGuigan directed the first three episodes of the series, and David Moore directed the last three, the cast and crew met for a script read-through the week before filming began and the principal cast attended a boot camp at Leeds General Infirmary. Filming on the series commenced on 26 September 2010, the principal setting of St Matthews Hospital has been created within the former Leeds Girls High School. Eight weeks were spent converting the school into the hospital set, James Nesbitt as Dr Gabriel Monroe. Recently divorced from Anna, with a son Nick in university, Sarah Parish as Dr Jenny Bremner. BDP, formerly known as Building Design Partnership, is a firm of architects and engineers employing over 900 staff in the UK and internationally. The associates were made full equity partners in 1964, BDP was the end result of a series of experiments in profit sharing and multidisciplinary working begun by Grenfell-Baines in 1941 with the Grenfell Baines Group. A1962 policy statement committed BDP to “the principle of equal status for all professions”, the firm expanded rapidly over the following decades and had 30 partners and 700 staff by the time of Grenfell-Baines’s retirement in 1974. BDP’s principal offices, inherited from Grenfell Baines & Hargreaves, were in London, Manchester, by 1970, there were branch offices in Belfast, Glasgow and Guildford plus international offices in Memphis, Rome and Johannesburg. BDP ceased to be a partnership in 1997 and became a limited company, as of 2016 BDP was reported to be the UKs third largest architecture firm, with 950 employees. Lilian Pauline Neville-Jones, Baroness Neville-Jones DCMG PC is a former BBC Governor and Chairman of the British Joint Intelligence Committee. On 9 May 2011, the BBC reported that Lady Neville-Jones had resigned her role as Security Minister at her own request and she was then immediately appointed as Special Representative to Business on Cyber Security. Lady Neville-Jones was educated at Leeds Girls High School and Lady Margaret Hall, Lady Neville-Jones was a career member of Her Majestys Diplomatic Service from 1963 to 1996, during which time she served in British Missions in Rhodesia, Singapore, Washington, DC and Bonn. Between 1977 and 1982 she was seconded to the European Commission where she worked as Deputy, from 1991 to 1994 she was Head of the Defence and Overseas Secretariat in the Cabinet Office and Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet. During 1993 and 1994 she was Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee, in 2003 the Bosnian leader Alija Izetbegović commented that during these negotiations she never tried to conceal her dislike for us. She was appointed a BBC Governor in January 1998 and her final post was as Chairman of the Governors World Service Consultative Group. Neville-Jones was Chairman of the Audit Committee from 1998 until standing down from that position in September 2004, from 2002 to 2005, Lady Neville-Jones was also non-executive Chairman of the part Government-owned defence technology company QinetiQ, which was privatised for £1.3 billion in February 2006. She was also Chairman of the Information Assurance Advisory Council until 2007, in January 2006 Dame Pauline joined one of the Conservative Partys new policy groups on national security. On 2 July 2007 her appointment as a peer and Shadow Security Minister was announced. Her title was gazetted as Baroness Neville-Jones, of Hutton Roof in the County of Cumbria on 15 October 2007. On 13 May 2010, she was appointed Minister of State for Security and Counter Terrorism in David Camerons Conservative–Liberal Democrat coalition government, and was also sworn of the Privy Council. Neville-Jones later spoke out against internet hate preaching and jihadist rhetoric, on 9 May 2011, Baroness Neville-Jones resigned from her post as Minister of State for Security and Counter-Terrorism in the Home Office at her own request. In November 2014, Neville-Jones presented a speech at the Halifax International Security Forum, Lady Neville-Jones is an Honorary Fellow of Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford and an Honorary Doctor of the University of London and the Open University. In August 2013, the Council on CyberSecurity announced that Lady Neville-Jones joined the organization’s Advisory Board, appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in the 1987 Birthday Honours, she was raised to Dame Commander in the 1995 New Years Honours. Born in Budapest, he studied there with Béla Bartók, Leó Weiner and Ernő Dohnányi. In the 1930s, he was a répétiteur at the Hungarian State Opera and his career was interrupted by the rise of the Nazis, and being of Jewish background he fled the increasingly restrictive anti-semitic laws in 1938. After conducting a season of Russian ballet in London at the Royal Opera House he found refuge in Switzerland, prohibited from conducting there, he earned a living as a pianist. After the war, Solti was appointed director of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich in 1946. In 1952 he moved to the Frankfurt Opera, where he remained in charge for nine years and he took West German citizenship in 1953. In 1961 he became director of the Covent Garden Opera Company. During his ten-year tenure, he introduced changes that raised standards to the highest international levels, under his musical directorship the status of the company was recognised with the grant of the title the Royal Opera. He became a British citizen in 1972, in 1969 Solti became music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, a post he held for 22 years. He relinquished the position in 1991 and became the music director laureate. Known in his early years for the intensity of his music making and he recorded many works two or three times at various stages of his career, and was a prolific recording artist, making more than 250 recordings, including 45 complete opera sets. The most famous of his recordings is probably Deccas complete set of Wagners Der Ring des Nibelungen, Soltis Ring has twice been voted the greatest recording ever made, in polls for Gramophone magazine in 1999 and the BBCs Music Magazine in 2012. Solti was repeatedly honoured by the industry with awards throughout his career. Solti also received the Academy’s 1995 Lifetime Achievement Award, Solti was born György Stern on Maros utca, in the Hegyvidék district of the Buda side of Budapest. He was the younger of the two children of Móricz Stern and his wife Teréz, née Rosenbaum, both of whom were Jewish, in the aftermath of the First World War it became the accepted practice in Hungary for citizens with Germanic surnames to adopt Hungarian ones. The right wing regime of Admiral Horthy enacted a series of Hungarianisation laws, Mor Stern, a self-employed merchant, felt no need to change his surname, but thought it prudent to change that of his children. He renamed them after Solt, a town in central Hungary. His sons given name, György, was acceptably Hungarian and was not changed, Solti described his father as a kind, sweet man who trusted everyone. She is the founder of Stowe Family Law and regularly contributes on family law matters in the UK media, Marilyn Stowe was educated at Leeds Girls High School and the University of Leeds. She founded Stowe Family Law, the UKs largest specialist family law firm, the firm has offices in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, Leeds, Wetherby and Ilkley, West Yorkshire, Hale and Wilmslow, Cheshire, Central London, St Albans, Winchester and Tunbridge Wells. Marilyn sold Stowe Family Law LLP to midmarket private equity firm Living Bridge in February 2017 and she was among the first 35 solicitors, barristers and ex-judges to qualify as a family law arbitrator in 2012. The family law arbitration scheme operates in England and Wales and was developed by the Institute of Family Law Arbitrators, as a result, she is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. In 2012 she became a member of the Legal Advisory Group to the Law Commission regarding matrimonial property, in 2007 she was a member of a Legal Advisory Group that reviewed the rights of cohabiting couples. She is also known for unearthing the medical evidence that freed Sally Clark, in November 1999, Sally Clark was convicted of the murder of two of her sons, the first of whom had died suddenly within a few weeks of his birth three years earlier. After her second son died in a manner, she was arrested in 1998. The convictions were upheld at appeal in October 2000, Marilyn Stowe volunteered her involvement in the case, providing her services free of charge because she felt that something was not right. She obtained key medical reports, which showed one of the babies could have died from natural causes. This evidence had been known to the prosecutions pathologist, Alan Williams, since February 1998, the Clark familys solicitor described Marilyn Stowe as the woman whos going to get Sally out of prison. Sally Clarks convictions were overturned in an appeal on 29 January 2003. The prosecutions pathologist, Alan Williams, was guilty of serious professional misconduct by the General Medical Council. Stowe is married to fellow lawyer Grahame Stowe, and has one son and she attributes her decision to embark upon a legal career to her parents, It was what they wanted for me and it was at a time when women didn’t go into law. Roundhay School is an Ofsted Outstanding mixed all-through school and sixth form located in Roundhay, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It contains about 2000 pupils, with about 500 pupils in the sixth form, the current headteacher is Mr. Matthew Partington who had previously been Principal of Goole Academy in the East Riding where he, according to Ofsted, transformed the school beyond recognition. The school grounds are based across 22 acres, and are directly opposite Roundhay Park near the Roundhay Hall BUPA hospital, Roundhay School was established in 1903 as an all-boys grammar school. During World Wars I and II many of the Roundhay pupils above the age of 16 served with the Yorkshire Regiment, during 2002–04 much of the old school was demolished and rebuilt under a £14 million Private Finance Initiative. The frontage of the building was largely untouched, though the central section was replaced in favour of an upper-floor staff room that looks over the fields at the front of the school. However, the Sixth Form block located by the Gledhow Lane entrance was not part of the renovations, in September 2013, the Roundhay School Primary Campus was unveiled, which changed the school from being an 11–18 secondary school into a 4–18 all-through school. It started taking admissions in 2012 for the start of the 2013 academic year, the primary campus is located on Elmete Lane, just off Wetherby Road. Roundhay School runs various extracurricular activities for pupils during the lunch period, sport, an important part of extracurricular life at Roundhay, is facilitated through playing fields and indoor sports halls. Chief sports are football, rugby union, netball, cricket, School pupils also play in tennis, athletics or swimming competitions. There is also trampolining class and a climbing wall, all pupils can take lessons in the playing of musical instruments, while the schools resident bands compete in a yearly Battle of the Bands competition. There is a school drama production which includes pupils of any age. The 2006 production was Sister Act, Roundhay School runs trips abroad on annual and 2 year cycles. These include art trips to New York City, Germany, and Barcelona, the school also runs a skiing trip to Canada, and, in 2010, to Austria. History trips take place every year to Skipton Castle, the Imperial War Museum, there was an art trip to China in April 2009. In 2012, the Sixth Form Geography department travelled to Iceland, taking in thermal springs, in 2014, the department also travelled to Morocco. Roundhay School receives consistent highly rated Ofsted reports, and external examination results are above the national average, in 2007, the school received the best A level results of all the state schools in the city of Leeds, and the second best in the district. Allerton High School Business and Enterprise is an 11-19 comprehensive school in Alwoodley, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England specialising in Business and Enterprise. It is situated around 500 metres north of the A6120 Leeds Outer Ring Road, north of the Moor Allerton shopping centre, the head teacher is Mrs Elaine Silson. The school was opened in 1939 as a grammar school by the City of Leeds Education Committee. The school had previously been on Harrogate Road near Stainbeck Lane since 1901, in the 1960s it had around 700 girls. In 1972, boys were included in the student body and the became a 13–18 comprehensive. It later became an 11–19 comprehensive, and in 1992 underwent a physical expansion, the school moved into new buildings on 1 September 2008, and there was a formal opening by Prime Minister Gordon Brown on 28 November 2008. A dark green or black headscarf may be worn, the school is involved in the Excellence in Cities initiative. Its motto was In Minimis Fidelis until 2004, when it was changed to Enabling Young People To Achieve Success, the new building includes a substantial multi-faith centre. The school was used in 2010 for the filming of Married Single Other, making it one of a number in Leeds to be used on television including Allerton Grange School. Benton Park school was built in the grounds of old Benton Park house, the school was begun by Joseph Riley in 1838 and by 1851 he had 33 boys in residence. David Young Community Academy is a state-funded academy sponsored by the Church of England in Seacroft, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. The school is named after David Young a former Bishop of Ripon, the academy is named in recognition of Bishop David Youngs extensive work in education both nationally and in the Leeds area. The school was established on 18 September 2006 with pupils from Agnes Stewart Church of England High School, before the building of the Academy the largest secondary school in Seacroft was the nearby East Leeds High School, which was demolished in December 2009. In June 2009 it was announced by School Secretary Ed Balls that £3.3 million would be spent on the school to create a purpose built base for army and air cadets. The school is divided into six houses, Brunel, Da Vinci, Hadid, Hopper, Telford, DYCA is part of the LEAF Academy Trust. The trust consists of primary and secondary academies and the Diocese of Leeds, the schools population in January 2008 was 920, with a sixth form of 65. At the same time the school had one of the worst attendance records in the country, in the last full Ofsted inspection of David Young Community Academy inspectors rated it inadequate in all four assessment criteria. Brigshaw High School is located in the village of Allerton Bywater, West Yorkshire, England. The school was opened in September 1972 with only 3 buildings, the block, music. In the first academic year, the school consisted of a first and second year from feeder schools, the first headmaster was a Mr Rollinson. The schools first musical production, The Boyfriend was performed in 1978 followed by Oliver in 1979, a new block, De-Lacy, was built in the mid-1980s to cope with school growth. Much of the main block was gutted by an arson fire in April 2000. Another electrical fire in 2003 destroyed the sports block, in September 2004 the school became a specialist Language College as part of the UKs Specialist schools programme. The schools in the Brigshaw Federation have worked closely over recent years, eight of the schools in the Federation formally consulted on establishing a shared Trust for the partnership, and achieved this on 1 April 2010. The main building was destroyed by a fire in April 2000. It was rebuilt during 2002 at a cost of £8 million and it was renamed Silkstone after a coal face located underneath the school. After the 2003 fire the sports hall was rebuilt in July 2005 at a cost of £2.5 million, the new sports facility includes a gym, a running track, football and rugby fields and indoor tennis and basketball courts and a bike track. Faults were found with the sports hall water system, and tests revealed evidence of Legionellosis in the water dispensed at drinking fountains, the music center is the only building left which remains from the original 1972 construction. Also in 2011 it has been updated with new Windows and a new state of the art music technology computer suite, in year seven the Y side of the year studies German and the X side studies French. When pupils reach year eight they learn Spanish as well as German, in Year 10 pupils choose three pathway subjects from Drama, Media, Business, ICT, Cooking, Electronics, Art, Music, Woodwork, Graphics, Textiles, Geography, History, P. E. Some of these courses can be taken to BTEC level, where only coursework is carried out, in addition to the three chosen options there are compulsory subjects, English, Mathematics and Science, one or two languages PHSE, RE and Basic P. E. School pupils have gained places on the Prime Ministers Global Fellowship programme, the first in the year of the programme,2008. Corpus Christi Catholic College is a secondary school located in Halton Moor, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. The school currently has a roll of around 900 to 1,000 pupils, around 50% of pupils achieve 5 A-C grades at GCSE. In September 2001 Corpus Christi became the first Inner City Leeds High School to gain Specialist School status when it became a Technology College, in 2005 the school became a member of the Specialist Schools Most Improved Schools’ Club for the second occasion. It was awarded a School Achievement Award in 2003 and a recognition for the Healthy Schools Scheme, in November 2006 the school was rated as overall Grade 2 by Ofsted, while, the same month, awarding it Grade 1. Between 2009 and 2013, with funds from the UK Government and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Leeds, on 28 April 2014, Ann Maguire, a 61-year-old teacher, died in hospital after a stabbing at the school. A 15-year-old male student was arrested and two days later charged with her murder, pope Francis expressed his sincere sympathy for the family of Mrs Maguire. On 3 November 2014, 16-year-old Will Cornick was sentenced to be detained at Her Majestys pleasure with a tariff of 20 years for Maguires murder. The Farnley Academy is a secondary school with serving the Farnley, New Farnley and Wortley wards of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. The Farnley Academy is built on the site of Cow Close Secondary School which became Harrington High, then Farnley Park High and then Farnley Park Maths, the school was converted to academy status in 2012 and was renamed The Farnley Academy. The first phase of the schools £23 million Building Schools for the Future programme was completed in February 2012 with the opening of the Tomlinson Building, the refurbished Bronte Building opened in September 2012 with the whole project completed in November 2012. Today, the forms part of the Gorse Academies Trust which also includes The Morley Academy, The Ruth Gorse Academy. The Farnley Academys GCSE results improved from 32% 5+ A*-C EM in 2009 to 73% 5+ A*-C in 2014, the Farnley Academy is one of the few schools in the country to share a site with a centre for children with complex needs, the West SILC. In 2015, Ofsted awarded the academy with an outstanding status, according to reports, the Academy is the top performing school in Leeds. Lawnswood School is a mixed secondary school and sixth form located in the Lawnswood area of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. The school was founded in 1972 and had its first comprehensive intake in 1974, the sixth form was judged as Grade 2 and consistently good in the 2009 Ofsted inspection, but the school as a whole was rated as Grade 4 for overall effectiveness. And consequently placed into special measures, however, the school was said to be improving. During an early 2011 Ofsted visit, the school was judged to be making progress in all the key areas. The Morley Academy is a mixed secondary school located in Morley, West Yorkshire, England. The school forms part of the Gorse Academies Trust which also includes The Farnley Academy, The Ruth Gorse Academy, the school was established as Morley Secondary School on 4 July 1907, becoming Morley Grammar School in 1930. The first head teacher was John Robinson Airey who was a renowned mathematician. It became a comprehensive in 1975 under headmaster J R Carr. The school has had six different headteachers, during the First World War pupils at Morley Grammar school raised £5,000 to pay for school uniforms for struggling families within the school. On 1 January 2011, Morley High School became The Morley Academy under the new academy programme. Sir John Townsley was appointed head teacher after the retirement of Roland Walker, towards the end of 2012 Sir John Townsley ceased his leadership of the academy and Anne-Marie Garnett was appointed principal. In November 2014, Leanne Griffiths was appointed as Principal, an Ofsted inspection in 2006 found the school Grade 3 for overall effectiveness, and in 2009, Grade 1. Ofsted re-evaluated the school with the same Grade 1 rating in 2013, on 25 June 2012 The Morley Academy hosted the Olympic Torch during its tour of the United Kingdom. African drummers from the schools extracurricular club with dancers and children from schools in the area welcomed the torch. In the 2015 New Years Honours List, Sir John Townsley was knighted for his services to education, the Morley Academy closed its sixth form provision in September 2015 due to the opening of Elliott Hudson College, a dedicated sixth form centre. In July 2001 the Arts Council awarded the Morley High School the Silver Level Artsmark, the school was one of three in Leeds and of only thirteen in Yorkshire to be so recognised. Mount Saint Marys School is a Roman Catholic secondary school in Leeds, England. Mount Saint Marys School was founded in 1853 by the Sisters Oblates of Mary Immaculate, father Robert Cooke, OMI, looked to the Sisters Oblates, who sent four sisters to establish a convent and school in the cellar of their convent. Many pupils were girls who worked in local mills and factories. By 1858 the sisters had raised funds to build a convent next to Mount Saint Marys Church. In 1978, Mount St Marys and St Michaels College both became comprehensives, Mount Saint Marys is a Faith school for ages 11–16 in Richmond Hill. Catholic education after 16 is found at Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College and it is situated just north of the A61, next to the derelict church of Mount St Mary which opened in 1857 and closed in 1989. This was a boys direct grant grammar school on St Johns Road in the Hyde Park area of Leeds. It later became a school, St Michaels Catholic College. It was a Jesuit college which opened as Leeds Catholic College on 18 September 1905 and it had the motto Quis ut deus, a translation of the Hebrew Mikhael, meaning God like. St Michaels is no longer in operation, the remaining Year 7 pupils who began education at the school in 2005 were transferred to Mount St Marys after the schools merged the same year.
