Matthew Wilson Slater is an American football coach and former wide receiver who is currently a coaching advisor for the New England Patriots of the National Football League (NFL). He previously played for 16 seasons with the Patriots. A special teams player for most of his career, he is considered one of the greatest gunners of all time.

A wide receiver (WR), also referred to as a wideout, and historically known as a split end (SE) or flanker (FL), is an eligible receiver in gridiron football. A key skill position of the offense, WR gets its name from the player being split out "wide", farthest away from the rest of the offensive formation.
