Album

Album, is a collection of audio recordings issued as a single item on CD, record, audio tape, or another medium. Albums of recorded music were developed in the early 20th century, first as books of individual 78rpm records, vinyl LPs are still issued, though in the 21st century album sales have mostly focused on compact disc and MP3 formats. The audio cassette was a format used from the late 1970s through to the 1990s alongside vinyl, an album may be recorded in a recording studio, in a concert venue, at home, in the field, or a mix of places. Recording may take a few hours to years to complete, usually in several takes with different parts recorded separately. Recordings that are done in one take without overdubbing are termed live, the majority of studio recordings contain an abundance of editing, sound effects, voice adjustments, etc. With modern recording technology, musicians can be recorded in separate rooms or at times while listening to the other parts using headphones. Album covers and liner notes are used, and sometimes additional information is provided, such as analysis of the recording, historically, the term album was applied to a collection of various items housed in a book format. In musical usage the word was used for collections of pieces of printed music from the early nineteenth century. Later, collections of related 78rpm records were bundled in book-like albums, the LP record, or 33 1⁄3 rpm microgroove vinyl record, is a gramophone record format introduced by Columbia Records in 1948. It was adopted by the industry as a standard format for the album. Apart from relatively minor refinements and the important later addition of stereophonic sound capability, the term album had been carried forward from the early nineteenth century when it had been used for collections of short pieces of music. Later, collections of related 78rpm records were bundled in book-like albums, as part of a trend of shifting sales in the music industry, some commenters have declared that the early 21st century experienced the death of the album. Sometimes shorter albums are referred to as mini-albums or EPs, Albums such as Tubular Bells, Amarok, Hergest Ridge by Mike Oldfield, and Yess Close to the Edge, include fewer than four tracks. There are no rules against artists such as Pinhead Gunpowder referring to their own releases under thirty minutes as albums. These are known as box sets, material is stored on an album in sections termed tracks, normally 11 or 12 tracks. A music track is a song or instrumental recording. The term is associated with popular music where separate tracks are known as album tracks. Dido Florian Cloud de Bounevialle OMalley Armstrong, known as Dido, is an English singer and songwriter. Dido attained international success with her debut album No Angel and her next album, Life for Rent, continued her success with the hit singles White Flag and Life for Rent. Didos first two albums are among the albums in UK Chart history, and both are in the top 10 best-selling albums of the 2000s in the UK. Her third studio album, Safe Trip Home, received critical acclaim and she was nominated for an Academy Award for the song If I Rise. Dido was ranked No.98 on the Billboard chart of the top Billboard 200 artists of the 2000s based on the success of her albums in the first decade of the 21st century. Dido made a comeback in 2013, releasing her studio album Girl Who Got Away. Dido was born at St Mary Abbots hospital in Kensington, London, on Christmas Day 1971, on her birth certificate, her name was registered as Florian Cloud de Bounevialle Armstrong. Because she was born on Christmas Day, she also celebrates a birthday on 25 June. Her mother, Clare, is a poet of French ancestry and her elder brother, Rowland Constantine OMalley Armstrong, is better known as record producer Rollo, part of the British electronica trio Faithless. Despite their birth names, the pair were known from childhood by the names that are famous now – Dido, Dido has made it clear that Dido is now her real name and not simply a stage name or nickname. Her name derives from that of the mythical Queen of Carthage, as a child, she had to deal with its ambiguous and unusual nature, which led to her being bullied and even to her pretending to have an ordinary name. As she explains, To be called one thing and christened another is very confusing and annoying. Its one of the most irritating things that my parents did to me, Florian is a German mans name. To give your child a whole lot of odd names, I thought it was cruel to call me Dido and then expect me to just deal with it. After she stole a recorder from school at the age of five, her parents enrolled her at the Guildhall School of Music, by the time she reached her teens she had learned to play the piano, recorder and the violin. She later studied law at Birkbeck, University of London, while working as a literary agent and she never completed the degree, deciding instead to take up music full-time. After learning the guitar, she showcased her skills to audiences during her 2004 Life for Rent tour, in 1995, Dido began recording 10 demo tracks which were put together on a collection entitled Odds & Ends and sent out by Nettwerk management. Nettwerk had signed her after she was brought to their attention by her collaborations with Faithless, Peter Leak became Didos manager during the recording of No Angel after Edge played some of the in-progress recordings and been blown away by them

Sarm West Studios

SARM Studios was a recording studio located in Notting Hill, London. The studios were established by Chris Blackwell, the founder of Island Records and it has also been known in the past as Island Studios. SARM is an acronym of Sound and Recording Mobiles, the studios were built inside a former church that had been deconsecrated. In 1970, two albums were recorded at the studios at the same time, Led Zeppelins Led Zeppelin IV. Similarly, Bob Marley & The Wailers and the Rolling Stones were in the studios at the time at one point in 1973. Marley also lived for a year in an apartment at SARM. Also the cathedral organ on George Michaels album Faith was played there, in the mid 1970s, Sarm was the first 24-track recording studio in England, it later became the first with 48-track facilities. In November 1984, Studio 1 at Sarm West was the venue for the recording of Do They Know Its Christmas by the members of Band Aid in support of efforts for the 1984–1985 famine in Ethiopia. In November 2014, the studios were used to record the Band Aid 30 charity single, in May 2011, the studios announced a major refurbishment which would result in two new studios as well as music business offices. The redesign would also include living accommodation, with the aim of facilitating a return to the studios’ 1970s policy of concentrating on long-term bookings, the studios are currently owned by SPZ Group, which is a holding company belonging to Trevor Horn and his late wife Jill Sinclair. The Sarm Studios complex also houses the offices of the SPZ-owned record labels ZTT Records and Stiff Records, and publishing companies Perfect Songs and Unforgettable Songs

Olympic Studios

Olympic Studios is an early 20th-century building in Barnes, London, which, after four years of closure, re-opened on 14 October 2013 as the new home for the Olympic Studios cinema. As well as a cinema, the building includes a café and dining room, a members club. The studios sound mixing desks eventually became famous in their own right, the conversion from film to recording studio was undertaken by architect Robertson Grant and the acoustics completed by Keith Grant and Russel Pettinger. The studios won Music Week magazines award for best recording studio five times, after forty years and a succession of owners, the studios earlier facilities were closed by the EMI and Virgin Group in 2009. In keeping with its history, Olympics cinema is now also the only one in London employing a new form of state-of-the-art Flare Audio cinema sound. After its earliest days, the became a theatre briefly again in the 1920s, actors who played there included John Gielgud. Between the 1930s and the era, it returned to its original function as a cinema. In its first decade it was notable for being one of the associated with the bioscope. In the 1950s the building became television production studios, the first home of Olympic Sound Studios was in central London in the late 1950s, owned by Angus McKenzie, who had purchased Larry Lyons Olympia Studio in Fulham. McKenzie then took a lease on a synagogue building at Carton Street. In conjunction with Richard Swettenham, McKenzie opened Olympics Studio One with a recording console from Olympia Studio. The Studio first came to prominence in 1958, its senior engineer was John Timperley. In 1962 Terry Allen joined the company as an electronic engineer, John Timperleys assistant was Roger Savage, who quickly gained a reputation as a particularly good sound balancer. Terry Allen soon became manager and was instructed by Angus McKenzie to dismiss Timperley late in 1962. Keith Grant had worked at Olympic on a basis for some time. Dick Swettenham designed the first professional transistorised desk in the world, apart from Roger Savage, several other young staff gained their start at Olympic. Gus Dudgeon began as an operator and when he left Olympic became associated with Elton John. Another successful employee was Michael Ross-Trevor, who eventually joined CBS Records, Studio One was used by many influential British groups including The Yardbirds, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Alexis Korner and Graham Bond

Dream pop

Dream pop is a subgenre of alternative rock and neo-psychedelia that developed in the 1980s. The style is typified by a preoccupation with atmosphere and texture as much as melody, the AllMusic Guide to Electronica defines dream pop as an atmospheric subgenre of alternative rock that relies on sonic textures as much as melody. Common characteristics are breathy vocals and use of effects, often producing a wall of noise. Dream pop tends to focus on textures and moods rather than propulsive rock riffs, lyrics are often introspective or existential in nature. In the view of music critic Simon Reynolds, dream pop celebrates rapturous and transcendent experiences, often using druggy, according to Rachel Felder, dream pop artists often resist representations of social reality in favor of ambiguous or hallucinogenic experiences. The term dream pop, which is thought to relate to the immersion in the experienced by the listener, was coined in the late 1980s by Alex Ayuli to describe the music of his band A. R. It was later adopted by Simon Reynolds to describe the nascent shoegazing scene in the UK, in the 1990s, dream pop and shoegazing were interchangeable and regionally dependent terms, with dream pop being the name by which shoegazing was known in America. Reynolds described dream pop bands as a wave of hazy neo-psychedelic groups, rolling Stone also described dream pop as originating with the early 1980s work of Cocteau Twins and their contemporaries. PopMatters noted an evolutionary line from gothic rock to dream pop, ambient pop music was described by AllMusic as essentially an extension of the dream pop that emerged in the wake of the shoegazer movement, distinct for its incorporation of electronic textures. According to N. George Harrisons 1970 album All Things Must Pass, with its Wall of Sound and fluid arrangements, led music journalist John Bergstrom to credit it as an influence on dream pop

Arista Records

/ˈɛ. rɪ. stə/ was a major American record label. It was a wholly owned unit of Sony Music Entertainment and was handled by Bertelsmann Music Group. The company operated under the RCA Music Group until 2011, the label was founded in 1974 by Clive Davis, who formerly worked for CBS Records. Until its demise in 2011, it was a distributor and promoter of albums throughout the United States. Today, the labels reissues and catalogue releases are handled by RCA Records, after being fired from CBS Records, Clive Davis was hired by Columbia Pictures in June 1974 to be a consultant for the companys record and music operations. The label was named Arista after New York Citys secondary school honor society, in early 1975, most of the artists who had been signed to Bell were let go, except David Cassidy, Tony Orlando and Dawn, and the 5th Dimension. Others, such as Suzi Quatro and Hot Chocolate, were farmed out to the Bell/Arista-distributed label, several Bell acts, such as Barry Manilow, the Bay City Rollers, and Melissa Manchester moved to Arista. The British Bell label kept that name for a couple of years before changing its name to Arista, the label was immortalized in the 1978 Rockpile song They Called It Rock, in the lyric, Arista says they love you/But the kids cant dance to this. In addition to Manilow, the Kinks, and Dionne Warwick, Arista signed Aretha Franklin in 1980, the labels most significant acquisition came in 1983 when Davis signed Warwicks cousin, Whitney Houston. Houston would eventually become Aristas biggest-selling recording artist, with sales of 200 million records worldwide, Arista had an imprint label in the 1970s called Arista Novus, which focused on contemporary jazz artists. A country music division, Career Records, was merged into the Arista Nashville division in 1997, Arista Austin was used in the late 1990s as a country label. Additionally, Arista was the North American distributor of Jive Records from 1981 until 1987, during the 1990s, Arista also distributed Logic, Rowdy and Heavenly Recordings. Looking to stave off bankruptcy, Columbia Pictures sold Arista to German-based Ariola Records in 1979, after Ariola purchased General Electrics RCA Records in 1986, the combined company was renamed Bertelsmann Music Group, though Aristas U. S. releases would not note BMG until 1987. Into the 1980s, Arista continued its success, including major UK act Secret Affair, over the years it acquired Northwestside Records, deConstruction Records, First Avenue Records, and Dedicated Records in the UK. In 1989, Arista entered into a joint venture with Antonio L. A. Reid and Babyface in the creation of LaFace Records record company of TLC, in 1993, Arista also entered into a joint-venture with Sean P. Diddy Combs to form Bad Boy Records. In 1997 Arista acquired Profile Records, the home of Run-D. M. C. in 1989, Arista signed Milli Vanilli, a duo consisting of Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan that was based in Germany. The label released its album, Girl You Know Its True, which was a remixed and re-edited version of All or Nothing. The album was certified platinum in the U. S. and charted five top-ten singles

A record producer or music producer oversees and manages the sound recording and production of a band or performers music, which may range from recording one song to recording a lengthy concept album. A producer has many roles during the recording process, the roles of a producer vary. The producer may perform these roles himself, or help select the engineer, the producer may also pay session musicians and engineers and ensure that the entire project is completed within the record companies budget. A record producer or music producer has a broad role in overseeing and managing the recording. Producers also often take on an entrepreneurial role, with responsibility for the budget, schedules, contracts. In the 2010s, the industry has two kinds of producers with different roles, executive producer and music producer. Executive producers oversee project finances while music producers oversee the process of recording songs or albums. In most cases the producer is also a competent arranger, composer. The producer will also liaise with the engineer who concentrates on the technical aspects of recording. Noted producer Phil Ek described his role as the person who creatively guides or directs the process of making a record, indeed, in Bollywood music, the designation actually is music director. The music producers job is to create, shape, and mold a piece of music, at the beginning of record industry, producer role was technically limited to record, in one shot, artists performing live. The role of producers changed progressively over the 1950s and 1960s due to technological developments, the development of multitrack recording caused a major change in the recording process. Before multitracking, all the elements of a song had to be performed simultaneously, all of these singers and musicians had to be assembled in a large studio and the performance had to be recorded. As well, for a song that used 20 instruments, it was no longer necessary to get all the players in the studio at the same time. Examples include the rock sound effects of the 1960s, e. g. playing back the sound of recorded instruments backwards or clanging the tape to produce unique sound effects. These new instruments were electric or electronic, and thus they used instrument amplifiers, new technologies like multitracking changed the goal of recording, A producer could blend together multiple takes and edit together different sections to create the desired sound. For example, in jazz fusion Bandleader-composer Miles Davis album Bitches Brew, producers like Phil Spector and George Martin were soon creating recordings that were, in practical terms, almost impossible to realise in live performance. Youth (musician and producer)

Martin Glover, known by his stage name Youth, is a record producer and a founding member and bassist of Killing Joke. He is a member of The Fireman, along with Paul McCartney, Glover was born in Farnworth, Lancashire. Between the ages of 11 and 17, he attended the boarding school Kingham Hill School. Naming himself Pig Youth after the reggae chanter Big Youth in 1977 he joined punk band The Rage, later he joined 4 Be 2 - a band formed by John Lydons brother Jimmy Lydon - and recorded the One of the Lads single with them. Youth is most famous for being the player in Killing Joke. He left the band in 1982, and soon founded his own commercially orientated dub funk band Brilliant. In 1989, Youth and Alex Paterson started the WAU, youths connections with dub continued in the mid-1990s when he was asked by Adrian Sherwood to remix some of Bim Shermans tracks for a reworking of the Miracle album. He also recently appeared on a Ted Parsons/NIC dub album, contributing a remix which opens with a sample from Glen Browns Version 78, in the early nineties, Youth formed techno and house music duo Blue Pearl together with American singer Durga McBroom. They scored a handful of hit singles including their blue vinyl debut Naked In The Rain and it was followed by Little Brother and Feel the Passion. An album, Naked, was also released, youths Butterfly Records label has produced artists such as Take That, Wet Wet Wet, Tom Jones, The Orb, System 7, Maria McKee and Heather Nova. Youth was the co-producer of The Verves Urban Hymns and Dolores ORiordans Are You Listening. He has also worked, produced and remixed for bands including Kate Bush, Guns N Roses, Primal Scream, Embrace, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Art of Noise, Crowded House, Zoe, P. M. Dawn, Yazoo, Erasure, U2, Bananarama, INXS, James, Suns of Arqa, Depeche Mode, The Shamen, Youth had also made plans to work with Duran Duran in the later stages of their lost album Reportage, before it was shelved later in 2006. In 2008, Youth produced the Delays album Everythings the Rush, in 2013, Glover produced the debut album Collective by the DIY indie rock band Echotape, followed by Meteorites by Echo and the Bunnymen and Lion by Peter Murphy. The following year, Glover produced Culture Clubs new album Tribes, also in 2008, Youth rejoined Killing Joke and is presently with them on bass. He is credited with founding the first psychedelic trance label, Dragonfly Records, as well as the Liquid Sound Design. He is well known on the trance scene, collaborating with Simon Posford and Saul Davies as Celtic Cross, with Greg Hunter and Simon Posford as Dub Trees. He has performed both full-on trance as well as chill-out DJ sets at several Return to the Source parties and his Butterfly Studios were also home of the Return to the Source offices circa 1999-2002

Sister Bliss

Sister Bliss is an English keyboardist, record producer, DJ, composer and songwriter. In the studio she is best known for her work with Rollo Armstrong, in 1996 she teamed up Faithless bandmate Rollo for a successful remix of Mobys song Thats When I Reach For My Revolver. Moby was so pleased they were asked to remix another song - Honey, Sister Bliss is the daughter of Arnon Bentovim. She started music at the age of five, when she learned how to play the piano and she eventually moved on to the violin, saxophone and then bass. Sister Bliss formed Faithless in 1995 with Rollo, Jamie Catto, Bliss constructed most of the music of Faithless herself electronically, but also played the piano, violin, saxophone and bass guitar. Various others have been members and collaborators over the years including Zoë Johnston and, frequently, Rollos sister Dido, Faithless toured extensively, and while Rollo preferred to stay in the studio, Sister Bliss could be seen on stage with Maxi Jazz. Faithless enjoyed a 17-year career, that included 7 albums, including two ones, and six top 10 singles. To date, Faithless have sold in excess of 15 million records worldwide and have played live to millions across the world and she released a two-disc compilation entitled Headliners,02 in 2001. On 10 September 2006 she gave birth to a son named Nate, the track Nates Tune found on the Faithless album To All New Arrivals is dedicated to him. Later on, Faithless founded their own label called Nates Tunes. She released Nightmoves on 14 July 2008, following Faithless retirement from touring in April 2011, she has concentrated on different projects. She presents a show on Ministry of Sound Radio at 7pm on Friday evenings. Sister Bliss has collaborated with Dido, Boy George, Cat Power, Robert Smith, The Temper Trap, a gifted musician and composer, Sister Bliss has written music for film, TV and theatre. Inspired by her love for discovering new music through her show and DJ sets,2013 will see Sister Bliss launch her own label. An outlet for signing new music she believes in, Junkdog already has a schedule of new artists. The sets are typically one hour or less in duration and she has occasionally appeared at medium-sized clubs in the UK in recent years, often as a headline DJ act playing sets of house music. Junkdog Records is her current record label, which has released Sister Bliss solo singles, her remixing of others tracks, on 31 May 2013, she reunited with Maxi Jazz for a Faithless live PA and DJ set at the Electric Brixton nightclub in London. The 1,500 capacity event was in aid of the academy for Crystal Palace football club

Odds & Ends is a collection of unfinished tracks and demo recordings by British pop singer, Dido. All of the material was recorded between 1994 and 1995, arista Records signed Dido in the United States, eventually forming a deal with her brother Rollo Armstrongs record label, Cheeky Records, allowing her music to be released internationally. The track Worthless later appeared on The Highbury Fields EP, a five track sampler released to promote her debut album, take My Hand was included on the album itself, and Sweet Eyed Baby was remixed to create another album track, Dont Think Of Me. Worthless and Me also appeared on the Japanese version of No Angel

Life for Rent

Life for Rent is the second studio album by British singer-songwriter Dido, released by Arista Records on 29 September 2003. The album was produced by Rollo Armstrong and American songwriter Rick Nowels, work on the album began in mid-2002. It was certified 7× Platinum by the BPI, and sold over 12 million copies worldwide, the album became the seventh best-selling album of the 2000s on UK, making Dido the only singer to have two albums in the Top 10 list. Life for Rents first track and lead single White Flag begins with a lone synth-chord reminiscent of Sinéad OConnors Nothing Compares 2 U, in the song, the protagonist is unwilling to give up, even if they know it’s over. It features multi-layered sound, delicate piano outro, and strings, in battle, a white flag signals surrender. By stating there will be No white flag, she indicates she will not give up on the relationship, the second track Stoned has a dance vibe, bringing to mind David Bowie circa Outside. The title track, Life for Rent, has emotional gravity, the song opens with an acoustic guitar, keeping the guitar in and giving the tune a hip-hop beat. Nothing I have is truly mine she repeats at the conclusion, “Mary’s in India” is a reflective song about a friend who moves abroad, as the title suggests, and the void her departure creates in those she leaves behind. The fifth track See You When Youre 40 is a somber and melodic ballad with a touch of symphonic air, and Ive seen, tonight, what Id been warned about / Im gonna leave, tonight, before I change my mind, she sings. The sixth track Dont Leave Home sounds like shes picking herself up again although she speaks of shutting the blinds, but she revealed that its about drug addiction. But the narrator of the song is the drug, like a controlling lover, the drug takes over the users life until he doesnt even want to leave home. Who Makes You Feel is a trip-pop, soulful and tender track, sand in My Shoes talks about not having time, while the bridge get a bit dance-house. Do You Have a Little Time features lush strings and hip-hop back-beats and this Land of Mine is a reflective piece that according to PopMatters, could have Travis or Coldplay recording it with big grins on their faces. Simplistic and sparse, the song sounds just a bit like Olivia Newton-John in the early seventies, See the Sun sees Dido swoops in as savior for a broken heart, classified as a mini-anthem that has all the right items in their proper places. White Flag, was released as the single from the album. The song was received by critics who reviewed the album. It became a worldwide hit, reaching number one in Australia. It peaked at two in the United Kingdom, being held off the top spot by The Black Eyed Peas Where Is the Love

In music, a single or record single is a type of release, typically a song recording of fewer tracks than an LP record, an album or an EP record. This can be released for sale to the public in a variety of different formats, in most cases, a single is a song that is released separately from an album, although it usually also appears on an album. Typically, these are the songs from albums that are released separately for promotional uses such as digital download or commercial radio airplay and are expected to be the most popular, in other cases a recording released as a single may not appear on an album. As digital downloading and audio streaming have become prevalent, it is often possible for every track on an album to also be available separately. Nevertheless, the concept of a single for an album has been retained as an identification of a heavily promoted or more popular song within an album collection. Despite being referred to as a single, singles can include up to as many as three tracks on them. The biggest digital music distributor, iTunes, accepts as many as three tracks less than ten minutes each as a single, as well as popular music player Spotify also following in this trend. Any more than three tracks on a release or longer than thirty minutes in total running time is either an Extended Play or if over six tracks long. The basic specifications of the single were made in the late 19th century. Gramophone discs were manufactured with a range of speeds and in several sizes. By about 1910, however, the 10-inch,78 rpm shellac disc had become the most commonly used format, the inherent technical limitations of the gramophone disc defined the standard format for commercial recordings in the early 20th century.26 rpm. With these factors applied to the 10-inch format, songwriters and performers increasingly tailored their output to fit the new medium, the breakthrough came with Bob Dylans Like a Rolling Stone. Singles have been issued in various formats, including 7-inch, 10-inch, other, less common, formats include singles on digital compact cassette, DVD, and LD, as well as many non-standard sizes of vinyl disc. Some artist release singles on records, a more common in musical subcultures. The most common form of the single is the 45 or 7-inch. The names are derived from its speed,45 rpm. The 7-inch 45 rpm record was released 31 March 1949 by RCA Victor as a smaller, more durable, the first 45 rpm records were monaural, with recordings on both sides of the disc. Here with Me is the debut single by English singer-songwriter Dido. It was the first single she released from her 1999 debut studio album, the song was written about her now ex-boyfriend Bob Page. It peaked at four in the UK Singles Chart, becoming her second top five single in a row, following Stan. It reached number 1 on the Australia HitSeekers Chart following her performance on the 2001 ARIA Awards. Here with Me was used as the song for the 1999–2002 American television sci-fi drama Roswell. Two distinct music videos were made for the track, the first version was filmed in 1999, and released to the American market. The American version was directed by Big TV. and uses footage of the singer rendered in sepia tones, Dido later stated that she hoped to record a new video of the track for international release. A new version was directed in full color by Liz Friedlander and was released in December 2000 and this became the video released to the British & European markets, the music video for the international version was filmed in Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The track appears on the soundtrack album. It was also in the 2000 film Bounce and it was featured as the opening song of the TV series Roswell. The song was featured in the NBC television show ER.
