Mausoleum

A mausoleuma is an external free-standing building constructed as a monument enclosing the interment space or burial chamber of a deceased person or people. A monument without the interment is a cenotaph, a mausoleum may be considered a type of tomb, or the tomb may be considered to be within the mausoleum. A Christian mausoleum sometimes includes a chapel, the word derives from the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the grave of King Mausolus, the Persian satrap of Caria, whose large tomb was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Historically, mausolea were, and still may be, large, however, smaller mausolea soon became popular with the gentry and nobility in many countries. In the Roman Empire, these were often ranged in necropoles or along roadsides, however, when Christianity became dominant, mausoleums were out of use. Later, mausolea became particularly popular in Europe and its colonies during the modern and modern periods. A single mausoleum may be permanently sealed, a mausoleum encloses a burial chamber either wholly above ground or within a burial vault below the superstructure. This contains the body or bodies, probably within sarcophagi or interment niches, modern mausolea may also act as columbaria with additional cinerary urn niches. Mausolea may be located in a cemetery, a churchyard or on private land, in the United States, the term may be used for a burial vault below a larger facility, such as a church. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles, California, for example, has 6,000 sepulchral and it is known as the crypt mausoleum. In Europe, these vaults are sometimes called crypts or catacombs. Grave robbery

Grave robbery, tomb robbing, or tomb raiding is the act of uncovering a tomb or crypt to steal artifacts or personal effects. A related act is body snatching, a term that is related to the taking of ones body, grave robbery pertains to the disinterring of a grave chiefly for the purpose of stealing a corpse and/or stealing other objects. Grave robbing has caused difficulty to the study of archaeology, art history. Countless precious grave sites and tombs have been robbed before scholars were able to examine them, grave robbers usually sell their goods on the black market. Though some artifacts may make their way to museums or scholars, chinese jade burial suits were believed to be myths for many years until two were discovered in 1968, it is now believed that most jade burial suits were removed long ago by grave robbers. Grave robbing is still problematic in 21st century China, the increase in technology, such as night vision goggles, air breathing equipment, and metal detectors allows grave robbers to better find and rob ancient gravesites. There are institutions in which you can learn how to rob graves– “for about 200 yuan a day, land surveying skills are first taught, before progressing to probes and shovels, then finally explosives. After 10 days, adepts have the chance to assist an instructor in a real tomb robbery”, Ancient Egyptian tombs are one of the most common examples of tomb or grave robbery. Most of the tombs in Egypts Valley of the Kings were robbed within one hundred years of their sealing, Egyptian pharaohs often kept records of the precious items in their tombs, so an inventory check is presumed for archaeologists. Oftentimes, warnings would be left by the Pharaohs in the tombs of calamities and curses that would be laid upon any who touched the treasure, or the bodies, there are many examples of grave robbing in the Ancient World outside of Egypt. For instance, the Romans also suffered decades of theft and destruction of tombs, crypts, there are also many grave robbers in Central and Northern Europe, mostly working with metal detectors. Merovingian graves in France and Germany but also Anglo-Saxon graves in England contain many metal grave goods, grave robbers often leave them, being only interested in gold and silver. Grave contexts, ceramics, iron weapons and skeletons are destroyed, modern grave robbing in North America also involves long-abandoned or forgotten private Antebellum Period to pre-Great Depression era grave sites. These sites are often desecrated by grave robbers in search of old, hence valuable, affected sites are typically in rural, forested areas where once-prominent, wealthy landowners and their families were interred. The remote and often undocumented locations of defunct private cemeteries make them susceptible to grave robbery. The practice may be encouraged by default upon the discovery of an unknown family cemetery by a new landowner. However, a secret agent was present and had notified the police beforehand. Anthrax (American band)

Anthrax is an American thrash metal band from New York City, formed in 1981 by guitarist Scott Ian and bassist Dan Lilker. The group was considered one of the leaders of the metal scene during the 1980s. Of the Big Four thrash metal bands, Anthrax were the band from the East Coast. As of 2016, the band has released 11 studio albums, several other albums, according to Nielsen SoundScan, Anthrax sold 2.5 million records in the United States from 1991 to 2004, with worldwide sales of 10 million. Noted for its performances, Anthrax signed with the independent label Megaforce Records. Lilker soon left the band to form Nuclear Assault, and was replaced by roadie Frank Bello, vocalist Neil Turbin was replaced after two years by Matt Fallon who was then subsequently replaced in 1984 by Joey Belladonna. With a new lineup, the band recorded Spreading the Disease in 1985, Anthraxs third album, Among the Living, was released in 1987 to critical praise. The band experienced another change in 1992, when John Bush from Armored Saint replaced Belladonna as lead vocalist. Sound of White Noise was released the year, peaking at number seven on the Billboard 200. Studio recordings during the 1990s saw the band, influenced by other genres, Anthraxs lineup has changed several times over their career. The band has had a number of vocalists including Neil Turbin, Joey Belladonna, Dan Nelson, founding member Scott Ian and early arrival Charlie Benante, who joined Anthrax in 1983, are the only band members to appear on every album. Bassist Frank Bello has played on album, except for the bands debut Fistful of Metal. In 2010, Joey Belladonna returned to Anthrax and has recorded two more studio albums with the band, Worship Music and For All Kings. Anthrax was formed in Queens, New York City, on July 18,1981 by guitarists Scott Ian and Dan Lilker, the band was named after the disease of the same name which Ian saw in a biology textbook. The name was chosen because it sounded sufficiently evil, Anthraxs initial line-up was completed by singer John Connelly, drummer Dave Weiss and bassist Paul Kahn. Kahn was briefly replaced by bassist Kenny Kushner before Lilker took over on bass, Weiss was then replaced early on by Greg DAngelo, who was recommended to the band by Greg Walls. Scott Ians younger brother Jason Rosenfeld was a temporary vocalist until Ians former schoolmate Neil Turbin joined the band in late August 1982, the band recorded its first demo tape during this time. The bands first performance with Neil Turbin was at Great Gildersleeves and this line-up played regularly in the New York-New Jersey area over the next several months

DVD

DVD is a digital optical disc storage format invented and developed by Philips, Sony, Toshiba, and Panasonic in 1995. The medium can store any kind of data and is widely used for software. DVDs offer higher capacity than compact discs while having the same dimensions. Pre-recorded DVDs are mass-produced using molding machines that physically stamp data onto the DVD, such discs are a form of DVD-ROM because data can only be read and not written or erased. Blank recordable DVD discs can be recorded using a DVD recorder. Rewritable DVDs can be recorded and erased many times, DVDs containing other types of information may be referred to as DVD data discs. The OED also states that in 1995, The companies said the name of the format will simply be DVD. Toshiba had been using the name ‘digital video disk’, but that was switched to ‘digital versatile disk’ after computer companies complained that it left out their applications, Digital versatile disc is the explanation provided in a DVD Forum Primer from 2000 and in the DVD Forums mission statement. There were several formats developed for recording video on optical discs before the DVD, Optical recording technology was invented by David Paul Gregg and James Russell in 1958 and first patented in 1961. A consumer optical disc data format known as LaserDisc was developed in the United States and it used much larger discs than the later formats. CD Video used analog video encoding on optical discs matching the established standard 120 mm size of audio CDs, Video CD became one of the first formats for distributing digitally encoded films in this format, in 1993. In the same year, two new optical disc formats were being developed. By the time of the launches for both formats in January 1995, the MMCD nomenclature had been dropped, and Philips and Sony were referring to their format as Digital Video Disc. Representatives from the SD camp asked IBM for advice on the system to use for their disc. Alan E. Bell, a researcher from IBMs Almaden Research Center, got that request and this group was referred to as the Technical Working Group, or TWG. On August 14,1995, an ad hoc group formed from five computer companies issued a release stating that they would only accept a single format. The TWG voted to both formats unless the two camps agreed on a single, converged standard. They recruited Lou Gerstner, president of IBM, to pressure the executives of the warring factions, as a result, the DVD specification provided a storage capacity of 4.7 GB for a single-layered, single-sided disc and 8.5 GB for a dual-layered, single-sided disc

Blu-ray

Blu-ray or Blu-ray Disc is a digital optical disc data storage format. It was designed to supersede the DVD format, in that it is capable of storing high-definition, the plastic disc is 120 mm in diameter and 1.2 mm thick, the same size as DVDs and CDs. Conventional Blu-ray Disc discs contain 25 GB per layer, with dual layer discs being the standard for feature-length video discs. Triple-layer discs and quadruple layers are available for BD-XL re-writer drives, the name Blu-ray refers to the blue laser used to read the disc, which allows information to be stored at a greater density than is possible with the longer-wavelength red laser used for DVDs. The main application of Blu-ray is as a medium for video material such as films and physical distribution of video games for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4. Besides the hardware specifications, Blu-ray is associated with a set of multimedia formats, high-definition video may be stored on Blu-ray discs with up to 2160p resolution, at up to 60 frames per second. DVD discs had been limited to a resolution of 480p or 576p. The BD format was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association, a group representing makers of consumer electronics, computer hardware, Sony unveiled the first Blu-ray disc prototypes in October 2000, and the first prototype player was released in April 2003 in Japan. Afterwards, it continued to be developed until its release in June 2006. During the high definition disc format war, Blu-ray Disc competed with the HD DVD format. Toshiba, the company that supported HD DVD, conceded in February 2008. According to Media Research, high-definition software sales in the US were slower in the first two years than DVD software sales, Blu-ray faces competition from video on demand and the continued sale of DVDs. As of January 2016, 44% of U. S. broadband households had a Blu-ray player, the information density of the DVD format was limited by the wavelength of the laser diodes used. Following protracted development, blue laser diodes operating at 405 nanometers became available on a production basis, Sony started two projects in collaboration with Philips applying the new diodes, UDO, and DVR Blue, a format of rewritable discs that would eventually become Blu-ray Disc. The core technologies of the formats are similar, the first DVR Blue prototypes were unveiled at the CEATEC exhibition in October 2000 by Sony. A trademark for the Blue Disc logo was filed February 9,2001, on February 19,2002, the project was officially announced as Blu-ray Disc, and Blu-ray Disc Founders was founded by the nine initial members. The first consumer device arrived in stores on April 10,2003, the Sony BDZ-S77, but there was no standard for prerecorded video, and no movies were released for this player. On October 4,2004, the name Blu-ray Disc Founders was officially changed to the Blu-ray Disc Association, the Blu-ray Disc physical specifications were completed in 2004

Night of the Living Dead

Night of the Living Dead is a 1968 American independent horror film, directed by George A. Romero, starring Duane Jones and Judith ODea. It was completed on a $114,000 budget and premiered October 1,1968, the film became a financial success, grossing $12 million domestically and $18 million internationally. It has been a cult classic ever since, Night of the Living Dead was heavily criticized at its release for its explicit gore. This is the most easily recognized version of the dead, to the point where people gather in mass quantities for conventions dressed as zombies, complete with makeup. Barbra and Johnny Blair drive to rural Pennsylvania for a visit to their fathers grave. Barbra is attacked by a man walking in the cemetery. Johnny tries to rescue his sister, but the man throws him against a gravestone, after a mishap with the car, Barbara escapes on foot, with the stranger in pursuit, and later arrives at a farmhouse, where she discovers a womans mangled corpse. Fleeing from the house, she is confronted by strange menacing figures like the man in the graveyard, Ben takes her into the house, driving the monsters away and sealing the doors and windows. Throughout the night, Barbra slowly descends into a stupor of shock, Ben and Barbra are unaware that the farmhouse has a cellar, housing an angry married couple Harry and Helen Cooper, along with their daughter Karen. They sought refuge after a group of the same monsters overturned their car, Tom and Judy, a teenage couple, arrived after hearing an emergency broadcast about a series of brutal murders. Karen has fallen ill after being bitten by one of the monsters. They ventured upstairs when Ben turns on a radio, while Barbra awakens from her stupor, Harry demands that everyone hide in the cellar, but Ben deems it a deathtrap and continues upstairs, to barricade the house with Toms help. Radio reports explain that a wave of murder is sweeping across the eastern United States. Ben finds a television, and they watch an emergency broadcaster report that the deceased have become reanimated and are consuming the flesh of the living. Experts, scientists, and the United States military fail to discover the cause and it returned from Venus, and was deliberately exploded in the Earths atmosphere when the radiation was detected. Ben plans to obtain medical care for Karen when the listed local rescue centers offering refuge. Ben and Tom refuel Bens truck while Harry hurls molotov cocktails from a window at the ghouls. Judy follows him, fearing Toms safety, Tom accidentally spills gasoline on the truck setting it ablaze

Dana Vernon Ashbrook is an American actor, perhaps best known for playing Bobby Briggs on the cult TV series Twin Peaks and its 1992 prequel film Twin Peaks, Fire Walk with Me. Ashbrook was born in San Diego, California, his mother, DAnn is a teacher and his father and he is the brother of writer Taylor Ashbrook and actress Daphne Ashbrook. After Twin Peaks went off the air, Ashbrook portrayed Clyde Barrow in the 1992 TV film, Bonnie & Clyde and he starred in the 1995 science fiction TV pilot W. E. I. R. D. World, written and produced by the makers of the Tales from the Crypt TV show, in 1997, he won the starring role of Gary McDermott on the short-lived TV series Crisis Center. He also starred in the films Shes Out of Control, Comfortably Numb, The Last Place On Earth and he played the recurring role of Rich Rinaldi on the TV series Dawsons Creek. In 2009, Ashbrook joined the cast of the series Crash for the part of Jimmy. In 2010, he reunited with some of the cast of Twin Peaks on the episode of Psych. He starred in 2012 with Ray Wise and Derek Mears in the Steven C. Miller psycho-thriller The Aggression Scale, Ashbrook will return to his role as Bobby Briggs in the 2017 revival of Twin Peaks

Forrest J Ackerman

He was based in Los Angeles, California. During his career as an agent, Ackerman represented such science fiction authors as Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, A. E. Van Vogt, Curt Siodmak. He was, for seven decades, one of science fictions staunchest spokesmen. Ackerman was the editor and principal writer of the American magazine Famous Monsters of Filmland, as well as an actor, and Charles Beaumont, The Short Life of Twilight Zones Magic Man, about the late author Charles Beaumont, a former client of The Ackerman Agency. Famous for his play and neologisms, he coined the genre nickname sci-fi. In 1953, he was voted #1 Fan Personality by the members of the World Science Fiction Society and he was also among the first and most outspoken advocates of Esperanto in the science fiction community. Ackerman was born Forrest James Ackerman, on November 24,1916, in Los Angeles, to Carroll Cridland and his father was from New York and his mother was from Ohio, she was nine years older than William. His name was used for the character of the reporter in the original Superman story The Reign of the Superman in issue 3 of Science Fiction magazine and he was one of the early members of the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society, and remained active in it for many decades. He attended the 1st World Science Fiction Convention in 1939, where he wore the first futuristicostume and sparked fan costuming and he attended every Worldcon but two thereafter during his lifetime. Ackerman invited Ray Bradbury to attend the Los Angeles Chapter of the Science Fiction League, the club changed its name to the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society during the period it was meeting at the restaurant. Among the writers frequenting the club were Robert A. Heinlein, Emil Petaja, Fredric Brown, Henry Kuttner, Leigh Brackett, Bradbury often attended meetings with his friend Ray Harryhausen, the two Rays had been introduced to each other by Ackerman. With $90 from Ackerman, Bradbury launched a fanzine, Futuria Fantasia and this second house, in the Los Feliz district of Los Angeles, contained some 300,000 books and pieces of movie and science-fiction memorabilia. From 1951 to 2002, Ackerman entertained some 50,000 fans at open houses - including, on one such evening, Ackerman was a board member of the Seattle Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame, where many items of his collection are now displayed. He knew most of the writers of fiction in the first half of the twentieth-century. As a literary agent, he represented some 200 writers, and he served as agent of record for many long lost authors and he was Ed Woods illiterary agent. Ackerman was credited with nurturing and even inspiring the careers of several early contemporaries like Ray Bradbury, Ray Harryhausen, Charles Beaumont, Marion Zimmer Bradley and his stories have been translated into six languages. Ackerman named the sexy comic-book character Vampirella and wrote the story for the comic. He also authored several lesbian stories under the name Laurajean Ermayne for Vice Versa and he was dubbed an honorary lesbian at a DOB party

Dawn of the Dead is a 1978 American independent zombie horror film directed by George A. Romero. It was written by Romero in collaboration with the Italian filmmaker Dario Argento and it was the second film made in Romeros Living Dead series, but contains no characters or settings from Night of the Living Dead, and shows in a larger scale the apocalyptic effects on society. In the film, a phenomenon of unidentified origin has caused the reanimation of the dead, who prey on human flesh, the cast features David Emge, Ken Foree, Scott Reiniger, and Gaylen Ross as survivors of the outbreak who barricade themselves inside a suburban shopping mall. Dawn of the Dead was filmed over four months, from late 1977 to early 1978, in the Pennsylvania cities of Pittsburgh. Its primary filming location was the Monroeville Mall, the film was made on a budget estimated at $1.5 million and was a significant box office success for its time, grossing approximately $55 million worldwide. Since opening in theaters in 1978, and despite heavy gore content, in addition to four official sequels, the film has spawned numerous parodies and pop culture references. A remake of the premiered in the United States on March 19,2004. It was labeled a re-imagining of the films concept. In 2008, Dawn of the Dead was chosen by Empire magazine as one of The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time, the United States is devastated by a mysterious phenomenon which reanimates recently deceased human beings as flesh-eating zombies. Despite the best efforts by the U. S. government and local authorities to control the situation, millions of people are killed and reanimate, social order is collapsing. Some rural communities and the military have been effective in fighting the hordes in open country. Meanwhile, police SWAT officer Roger DiMarco and his team raid a housing project where the residents are defying the law of delivering their dead to National Guardsmen. Some residents fight back with handguns and rifles, and are killed by both the overzealous SWAT team and their own reanimated dead, during the raid, Roger meets Peter Washington, part of another SWAT team, and they partner up together. Roger tells Peter that his friend Stephen intends to steal his workplaces helicopter and flee and they are informed of a group of zombies trapped in the basement, which they assist in the grim job of destroying. That night, Roger and Peter rendezvous with Francine and Stephen, following some close calls while stopping for fuel, the group comes across a shopping mall, which they decide to make their sanctuary. Francine reveals that she is pregnant, Peter offers to abort the child, but this is rejected. During the blockade operation, Roger becomes reckless and is bitten by the zombies, after clearing the interior of zombies, the four are able to enjoy a hedonistic lifestyle with all the goods in every store available to them. Roger eventually succumbs to his wounds, soon reanimates and is shot in the head by Peter, after several months, all emergency broadcast transmissions cease, suggesting that the government has collapsed and a large portion of the population has been killed and reanimated

Crowbar (tool)

The term jammy or jimmy most often refers to the tool when used for burglary. It is used as a lever either to force apart two objects or to remove nails, crowbars are commonly used to open nailed wooden crates, remove nails, or pry apart boards. Crowbars can be used as any of the three lever classes but the end is usually used as a first-class lever, and the flat end as a second class lever. In mining, crowbars are used to break and remove rock, normally made of medium-carbon steel, they can alternatively be made from titanium, which has the advantages of being lighter and nonmagnetic. The least expensive, most common crowbars are forged from hexagonal or sometimes cylindrical stock, more expensive designs may be forged with an I-shaped cross-section shaft. The accepted etymology identifies the first component of the word crowbar with the bird-name crow, the first attestation of the word is circa 1400

Monster Mash

Monster Mash is a 1962 novelty song and the best-known song by Bobby Boris Pickett. The Monster Mash single was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on October 20–27 of that year and it has been a perennial holiday favorite ever since. Pickett was an actor who sang with a band called the Cordials at night while going to auditions during the day. One night, while performing with his band, Pickett did a monologue in imitation of horror movie actor Boris Karloff while performing the Diamonds Little Darlin, the audience loved it, and fellow band member Lenny Capizzi encouraged Pickett to do more with the Karloff imitation. Pickett and Capizzi composed Monster Mash and recorded it with Gary S. Paxton, pianist Leon Russell, Johnny MacRae, Rickie Page, the song was partially inspired by Paxtons earlier novelty hit Alley Oop, as well as by the Mashed Potato dance craze of the era. A variation on the Mashed Potato was danced to Monster Mash, in which the footwork was the same but Frankenstein-style monster gestures were made with the arms and hands. The song is narrated by a mad scientist whose monster, late one evening, the dance becomes the hit of the land when the scientist throws a party for other monsters. The producers came up with several low-budget but effective sound effects for the recording, for example, the sound of a coffin opening was imitated by a rusty nail being pulled out of a board. The sound of a cauldron bubbling was actually water being bubbled through a straw, Pickett also impersonated horror film actor Bela Lugosi as Dracula with the lyric Whatever happened to my Transylvania Twist. The song was re-released several times and appeared in the US Billboard charts on three occasions after the release, December 1962, August 1970 and May 1973. The BBC had banned the record from airplay in 1962 on the grounds that the song was too morbid and it was re-released in the United Kingdom in 1973, where it peaked at #3 in early October. In August 1973, the song was re-released and peaked at #10 on the Hot 100 charts, to celebrate this popular release, Bobby and the Crypt-Kickers toured Dallas and St. Louis around the 1973 Halloween holiday. On this tour, the Crypt-Kickers were composed of Brian Ray, drummer Brian Englund, keyboardist Don Chambers, singer Jean Ray, the Monster Mash re-entered the British Charts again on November 2,2008 at #60. The 1962 album Monster Mash by American television host and radio personality John Zacherle includes his version of the song Monster Mash, the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band released a version on their 1969 album Tadpoles. The 1977 group Children Of The Night performing under the alias Monsters released their version of Monster Mash on H & L Records, blair Packham wrote and performed One Hit Wonder in 2004, about the later years of Bobby Picketts musical career and Picketts relationship with his most-recognized song

S. government and military hide out in fortified military bases and colonies, attempting to find a solution to the zombie pandemic. Dr. Sarah Bowman, Private Miguel Salazar, radio operator Bill McDermott, the tension between soldiers and scientists worsens in the face of dwindling supplies, loss of communication with other survivors, and slow progress in research. Dr. Logan hopes to secure Rhodes cooperation by showing him the results of his research. He is especially proud of Bub, a zombie who remembers some parts of his past life and engages in rudimentary human behavior, listening to music, aiming a pistol. Civility must be rewarded, Logan says, If its not rewarded, theres no use for it. Theres just no use for it at all, during a zombie roundup mission, two of the soldiers, Miller and Johnson, are killed after a zombie escapes its harness, whereupon Miguel attempts to kill the creature, but is bitten on the arm. Sarah amputates the arm and cauterizes it to stop the spreading infection, Rhodes then calls off the experiments and demands that all captive zombies be destroyed. Enraged, Rhodes kills Logan and his assistant Dr. Fisher and he then locks Sarah and Bill inside the zombie corral and attempts to force John to fly him and his men away from the base, which John refuses to do. Bub manages to escape from his chain and finds Dr. Logans corpse, in a display of human emotion, he expresses sadness and then becomes enraged. He finds a pistol discarded on the floor and goes in search of revenge, meanwhile, Miguel, who has become suicidal, opens the gates to the compound, allowing the horde of zombies lurking outside to enter onto the elevator, devouring him. While Miguel is doing this, John overcomes his captors, knocking both Rhodes and Torrez out before stealing their weapons and going into the zombie corral to rescue Sarah, the zombies rapidly enter the complex, Pvt Rickles and Pvt Torrez are torn apart by the horde. Pvt Steel attempts to shoot Bub through a window, but gets bitten by another zombie. Rhodes attempts to escape, but is chased and shot several times by a gun-toting Bub, Rhodes is chased into a horde of zombies and Bub mocks Rhodes with a salute and departs. Rhodes insolently tells the zombies to Choke on em. as the zombies begin devouring his insides, John reunites with Sarah and McDermott inside the zombie corral. They escape together to the surface, board the helicopter, the film ends with Sarah crossing off a day on her calendar which counts the days since their escape from the compound.
