Firth of Forth

The Firth of Forth is the estuary of the River Forth in Scotland, where it flows into the North Sea, between Fife to the north and Lothian to the south. It was known as Bodotria in Roman times, in the Norse sagas it was known as the Myrkvifiörd. Geologically, the Firth of Forth is a fjord, formed by the Forth Glacier in the last glacial period, the Kincardine Bridge, the Clackmannanshire Bridge, the Forth Road Bridge and the Forth Bridge carry traffic across the firth. Queensferry Crossing, alongside the Forth Road Bridge, was expected to open in 2016 but has since been delayed until May 2017. From 1964 to 1982, a tunnel existed under the Firth of Forth, the shafts leading into the tunnel were filled and capped with concrete when the tunnel was closed, and it is believed to have filled with water or collapsed in places. In July,2007, a passenger service completed a two-week trial between Portobello, Edinburgh and Kirkcaldy, Fife. The trial of the service was hailed as an operational success. It was estimated the service would decrease congestion for commuters on the Forth road, despite the initial success, the project was cancelled in December,2011. Historic villages line the Fife shoreline, Limekilns, Charlestown and Culross, established in the 6th century, the firth is important for nature conservation and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The Firth of Forth Islands SPA is home to more than 90,000 breeding seabirds every year, there is a bird observatory on the Isle of May. The youngest person to swim across the Firth of Forth was 13-year-old Joseph Feeney, in 2008, a controversial bid to allow oil transfer between ships in the firth was refused by Forth Ports. SPT Marine Services had asked permission to transfer 7.8 million tonnes of oil per year between tankers, but the proposals were met with determined opposition from conservation groups

Leith

Leith /ˈliːθ/, Scottish Gaelic, Lìte, is a district to the north of the city of Edinburgh at the mouth of the Water of Leith. The earliest surviving references are in the royal charter authorising the construction of Holyrood Abbey in 1128. The medieval settlements of Leith had grown into a burgh by 1833, historically part of Midlothian, Leith is sited on the coast of the Firth of Forth and lies within the council area of the City of Edinburgh. The port remains one of its most valuable enterprises, handling over 1.5 million tonnes of cargo a year in 2003, previous to the bridge being built in the late 15th century, Leith had settlements on either side of the river, lacking an easy crossing. South Leith was larger and was controlled by the lairds of Restalrig and it was based on trade and had many merchants houses and warehouses. This was where ships offloaded their cargoes at The Shore where they were collected by Edinburgh merchants, leithers were explicitly forbidden by statute to participate directly in the trade at the port, to ensure that landed goods were not sold elsewhere. North Leith was smaller but proportionately richer, coming under the jurisdiction of Holyrood Abbey and it was effectively a fishing village consisting of one street, now Sandport Street and Quayside Lane. Burgage plots ran down to the river from each house and this has traditionally been the shipbuilding side of Leith with several wet and dry docks built over time. The first dry dock in Scotland was built here in 1720, a small peninsula of land on the east bank also came under the same jurisdiction on what is now Sheriff Brae/Sheriff Bank. The first bridge to both banks of the river was built in 1493 by Abbot Bellenden, who controlled the church at North Leith. The bridge was a bridge, the revenue supplementing the churchs income. Reputedly Leiths oldest building, it was demolished in 1780 to allow ships to sail further upstream, the earliest evidence of settlement in Leith comes from several archaeological digs undertaken in the Shore area in the late 20th century. Amongst the finds were medieval wharf edges from the 12th century and this date fits with the earliest documentary evidence of settlement in Leith - the foundation charter of Holyrood Abbey. Leith has played a long and prominent role in Scottish history, as the major port serving Edinburgh, it has been the stage on which many significant events in Scottish history have taken place. Mary of Guise ruled Scotland from Leith in 1560 as Regent while her daughter, Mary, Mary of Guise moved the Scottish Court to Leith, to a site that is now Parliament Street, off Coalhill. According to the 18th-century historian William Maitland, her palace was situated on Rotten Row, now Water Street. Artifacts from the residence are held by the National Museum of Scotland. In June 1560, Mary of Guise died, and the Siege of Leith ended with the departure of the French troops in accordance with the Treaty of Leith, also known as the Treaty of Edinburgh

Portobello, Edinburgh

Portobello is a coastal suburb of Edinburgh. Once known as a resort, it is located three miles to the east of the city centre, facing the Firth of Forth, in eastern central Scotland. Although historically it was a town in its own right, and is seen as such by its inhabitants, it is now a residential suburb of Edinburgh. It lies between the suburbs of Joppa and Craigentinny, prior to its current revival, its peak as a resort was probably in the late 19th century, and it was in slow decline throughout the 20th century. By the 1960s, it had become an area of amusement arcades, amongst other examples of the changing nature of Portobello are Augusts Big Beach Busk and Portobello Village Fair, as well as the monthly Portobello Market in Rosefield Park. Most recently, in October 2016, Portobello became the first urban community in Scotland to register a Community Right to Buy after the 2016 expansion of land reform to cover urban areas too. The area was known as Figgate Muir, an expanse of moorland through which the Figgate Burn flowed from Duddingston Loch to the sea. The name Figgate was thought to come from the Saxon term for cows ditch, however, the land was used as pasture for cattle by the monks of Holyrood Abbey and the name is more likely to mean cow road as in Cowgate in Edinburgh. A report from 1661 describes a race in which twelve browster-wives ran from the Burn to the top of Arthurs Seat, by the 18th century, it had become a haunt of seamen and smugglers. He later built a pottery factory, and the local population grew so that Portobello became a thriving village. Land values subsequently rose, and by the beginning of the 19th century some parts had been sold at a yearly feu-duty of £40 per annum per acre, Portobello Sands were used at that time by the Edinburgh Light Horse for drill practice. Walter Scott was their quartermaster, and in 1802 while riding in a charge he was kicked by a horse, while recovering, he finished The Lay of the Last Minstrel. He noted that the lands were a perfect waste covered almost entirely with whins or furze, Portobello developed into a fashionable bathing resort, and in 1807 new salt-water baths were erected at a cost of £5,000. In 1822, the Visit of King George IV to Scotland, organised by Scott, included a review of troops and Highlanders held on the sands, with spectators crowding the sand dunes. During the 19th century, Portobello also became a town, manufacturing bricks, glass, lead, paper, pottery, soap. Joppa to the east was important in the production of salt, in 1833, the town was made a burgh, then in 1896 it was incorporated into Edinburgh by Act of Parliament. A formidable red-brick power station was built in 1934 at the west end of the beach and it was demolished in the following 18 months. Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland and one of its 32 local government council areas. Located in Lothian on the Firth of Forths southern shore, it is Scotlands second most populous city and the seventh most populous in the United Kingdom. The 2014 official population estimates are 464,990 for the city of Edinburgh,492,680 for the authority area. Recognised as the capital of Scotland since at least the 15th century, Edinburgh is home to the Scottish Parliament and it is the largest financial centre in the UK after London. Historically part of Midlothian, the city has long been a centre of education, particularly in the fields of medicine, Scots law, literature, the sciences and engineering. The University of Edinburgh, founded in 1582 and now one of four in the city, was placed 17th in the QS World University Rankings in 2013 and 2014. The city is famous for the Edinburgh International Festival and the Fringe. The citys historical and cultural attractions have made it the United Kingdoms second most popular tourist destination after London, attracting over one million overseas visitors each year. Historic sites in Edinburgh include Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, the churches of St. Giles, Greyfriars and the Canongate, Edinburghs Old Town and New Town together are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which has been managed by Edinburgh World Heritage since 1999. It appears to derive from the place name Eidyn mentioned in the Old Welsh epic poem Y Gododdin, the poem names Din Eidyn as a hill fort in the territory of the Gododdin. The Celtic element din was dropped and replaced by the Old English burh, the first documentary evidence of the medieval burgh is a royal charter, c. 1124–1127, by King David I granting a toft in burgo meo de Edenesburg to the Priory of Dunfermline. In modern Gaelic, the city is called Dùn Èideann, the earliest known human habitation in the Edinburgh area was at Cramond, where evidence was found of a Mesolithic camp site dated to c.8500 BC. Traces of later Bronze Age and Iron Age settlements have found on Castle Rock, Arthurs Seat, Craiglockhart Hill. When the Romans arrived in Lothian at the end of the 1st century AD, at some point before the 7th century AD, the Gododdin, who were presumably descendants of the Votadini, built the hill fort of Din Eidyn or Etin. Although its location has not been identified, it likely they would have chosen a commanding position like the Castle Rock, Arthurs Seat. In 638, the Gododdin stronghold was besieged by forces loyal to King Oswald of Northumbria and it thenceforth remained under their jurisdiction. The royal burgh was founded by King David I in the early 12th century on land belonging to the Crown, in 1638, King Charles Is attempt to introduce Anglican church forms in Scotland encountered stiff Presbyterian opposition culminating in the conflicts of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. Scotland is a country that is part of the United Kingdom and covers the northern third of the island of Great Britain. It shares a border with England to the south, and is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, with the North Sea to the east. In addition to the mainland, the country is made up of more than 790 islands, including the Northern Isles, the Kingdom of Scotland emerged as an independent sovereign state in the Early Middle Ages and continued to exist until 1707. By inheritance in 1603, James VI, King of Scots, became King of England and King of Ireland, Scotland subsequently entered into a political union with the Kingdom of England on 1 May 1707 to create the new Kingdom of Great Britain. The union also created a new Parliament of Great Britain, which succeeded both the Parliament of Scotland and the Parliament of England. Within Scotland, the monarchy of the United Kingdom has continued to use a variety of styles, titles, the legal system within Scotland has also remained separate from those of England and Wales and Northern Ireland, Scotland constitutes a distinct jurisdiction in both public and private law. Glasgow, Scotlands largest city, was one of the worlds leading industrial cities. Other major urban areas are Aberdeen and Dundee, Scottish waters consist of a large sector of the North Atlantic and the North Sea, containing the largest oil reserves in the European Union. This has given Aberdeen, the third-largest city in Scotland, the title of Europes oil capital, following a referendum in 1997, a Scottish Parliament was re-established, in the form of a devolved unicameral legislature comprising 129 members, having authority over many areas of domestic policy. Scotland is represented in the UK Parliament by 59 MPs and in the European Parliament by 6 MEPs, Scotland is also a member nation of the British–Irish Council, and the British–Irish Parliamentary Assembly. Scotland comes from Scoti, the Latin name for the Gaels, the Late Latin word Scotia was initially used to refer to Ireland. By the 11th century at the latest, Scotia was being used to refer to Scotland north of the River Forth, alongside Albania or Albany, the use of the words Scots and Scotland to encompass all of what is now Scotland became common in the Late Middle Ages. Repeated glaciations, which covered the land mass of modern Scotland. It is believed the first post-glacial groups of hunter-gatherers arrived in Scotland around 12,800 years ago, the groups of settlers began building the first known permanent houses on Scottish soil around 9,500 years ago, and the first villages around 6,000 years ago. The well-preserved village of Skara Brae on the mainland of Orkney dates from this period and it contains the remains of an early Bronze Age ruler laid out on white quartz pebbles and birch bark. It was also discovered for the first time that early Bronze Age people placed flowers in their graves, in the winter of 1850, a severe storm hit Scotland, causing widespread damage and over 200 deaths. In the Bay of Skaill, the storm stripped the earth from a large irregular knoll, when the storm cleared, local villagers found the outline of a village, consisting of a number of small houses without roofs. Kinross House

Kinross House is a late 17th-century country house overlooking Loch Leven, near Kinross in Perth and Kinross, Scotland. Construction of the house was begun in 1686, by the architect Sir William Bruce as his own home and it is regarded as one of his finest works, and was called by Daniel Defoe the most beautiful and regular piece of Architecture in Scotland. The house, which is undoubtedly the most important early classical mansion in Scotland and it was occupied for 200 years as the home of the Montgomery family, who purchased the property in the late 18th century. It has been described as the coldest house in Scotland, as until it was sold by the Montgomery family it had only four radiators, in 2010, it was sold to Donald Fothergill, an English businessman, who thoroughly refurbished the house. Fothergill and his family now live in the house, the property is home to two full-time house staff and four full-time gardeners. Kinross House is also notable in its precocious use of a building as focus. The house itself, and its garden avenue, are deliberately orientated on the object of 14th-century Loch Leven Castle on an island in the adjacent loch. Kinross House was featured in the BBC TV series The Country House Revealed, the six chapters of the book correspond to the six episodes of the BBC series. World War II

World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, although related conflicts began earlier. It involved the vast majority of the worlds countries—including all of the great powers—eventually forming two opposing alliances, the Allies and the Axis. It was the most widespread war in history, and directly involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. Marked by mass deaths of civilians, including the Holocaust and the bombing of industrial and population centres. These made World War II the deadliest conflict in human history, from late 1939 to early 1941, in a series of campaigns and treaties, Germany conquered or controlled much of continental Europe, and formed the Axis alliance with Italy and Japan. Under the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact of August 1939, Germany and the Soviet Union partitioned and annexed territories of their European neighbours, Poland, Finland, Romania and the Baltic states. In December 1941, Japan attacked the United States and European colonies in the Pacific Ocean, and quickly conquered much of the Western Pacific. The Axis advance halted in 1942 when Japan lost the critical Battle of Midway, near Hawaii, in 1944, the Western Allies invaded German-occupied France, while the Soviet Union regained all of its territorial losses and invaded Germany and its allies. During 1944 and 1945 the Japanese suffered major reverses in mainland Asia in South Central China and Burma, while the Allies crippled the Japanese Navy, thus ended the war in Asia, cementing the total victory of the Allies. World War II altered the political alignment and social structure of the world, the United Nations was established to foster international co-operation and prevent future conflicts. The victorious great powers—the United States, the Soviet Union, China, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union and the United States emerged as rival superpowers, setting the stage for the Cold War, which lasted for the next 46 years. Meanwhile, the influence of European great powers waned, while the decolonisation of Asia, most countries whose industries had been damaged moved towards economic recovery. Political integration, especially in Europe, emerged as an effort to end pre-war enmities, the start of the war in Europe is generally held to be 1 September 1939, beginning with the German invasion of Poland, Britain and France declared war on Germany two days later. The dates for the beginning of war in the Pacific include the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War on 7 July 1937, or even the Japanese invasion of Manchuria on 19 September 1931. Others follow the British historian A. J. P. Taylor, who held that the Sino-Japanese War and war in Europe and its colonies occurred simultaneously and this article uses the conventional dating. Other starting dates sometimes used for World War II include the Italian invasion of Abyssinia on 3 October 1935. The British historian Antony Beevor views the beginning of World War II as the Battles of Khalkhin Gol fought between Japan and the forces of Mongolia and the Soviet Union from May to September 1939, the exact date of the wars end is also not universally agreed upon. It was generally accepted at the time that the war ended with the armistice of 14 August 1945, rather than the formal surrender of Japan

World War I

World War I, also known as the First World War, the Great War, or the War to End All Wars, was a global war originating in Europe that lasted from 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918. More than 70 million military personnel, including 60 million Europeans, were mobilised in one of the largest wars in history and it was one of the deadliest conflicts in history, and paved the way for major political changes, including revolutions in many of the nations involved. The war drew in all the worlds great powers, assembled in two opposing alliances, the Allies versus the Central Powers of Germany and Austria-Hungary. These alliances were reorganised and expanded as more nations entered the war, Italy, Japan, the trigger for the war was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, by Yugoslav nationalist Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914. This set off a crisis when Austria-Hungary delivered an ultimatum to the Kingdom of Serbia. Within weeks, the powers were at war and the conflict soon spread around the world. On 25 July Russia began mobilisation and on 28 July, the Austro-Hungarians declared war on Serbia, Germany presented an ultimatum to Russia to demobilise, and when this was refused, declared war on Russia on 1 August. Germany then invaded neutral Belgium and Luxembourg before moving towards France, after the German march on Paris was halted, what became known as the Western Front settled into a battle of attrition, with a trench line that changed little until 1917. On the Eastern Front, the Russian army was successful against the Austro-Hungarians, in November 1914, the Ottoman Empire joined the Central Powers, opening fronts in the Caucasus, Mesopotamia and the Sinai. In 1915, Italy joined the Allies and Bulgaria joined the Central Powers, Romania joined the Allies in 1916, after a stunning German offensive along the Western Front in the spring of 1918, the Allies rallied and drove back the Germans in a series of successful offensives. By the end of the war or soon after, the German Empire, Russian Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire, national borders were redrawn, with several independent nations restored or created, and Germanys colonies were parceled out among the victors. During the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, the Big Four imposed their terms in a series of treaties, the League of Nations was formed with the aim of preventing any repetition of such a conflict. This effort failed, and economic depression, renewed nationalism, weakened successor states, and feelings of humiliation eventually contributed to World War II. From the time of its start until the approach of World War II, at the time, it was also sometimes called the war to end war or the war to end all wars due to its then-unparalleled scale and devastation. In Canada, Macleans magazine in October 1914 wrote, Some wars name themselves, during the interwar period, the war was most often called the World War and the Great War in English-speaking countries. Royal Naval Reserve

The Royal Naval Reserve is the volunteer reserve force of the Royal Navy in the United Kingdom. The present RNR was formed by merging the original Royal Naval Reserve, created in 1859, the Royal Naval Reserve has seen action in World War I, World War II, the Iraq War and Afghanistan. This led to a Royal Commission on Manning the Navy in 1858 and this established the RNR as a reserve of professional seamen from the British Merchant Navy and fishing fleets, who could be called upon during times of war to serve in the regular Royal Navy. The RNR was originally a reserve of only, but in 1862 this was extended to include the recruitment. From its creation, RNR officers wore on their uniforms a unique, after initial shore training, officers embarked in larger ships of the Royal Navys fleet for one year, to familiarise themselves with gunnery and naval practice. In 1910, the RNR was formed to recruit and train fishermen for wartime service in minesweepers, prior to the First World War, one hundred RNR officers were transferred to permanent careers in the regular navy—forever after referred to as the hungry hundred. In their professional careers, many RNR officers went on to command the largest passenger liners of the day and some also held positions in the shipping industry. On mobilisation in 1914, the RNR consisted of 30,000 officers, Officers of the permanent RNR on general service quickly took up seagoing appointments in the fleet, many in command, in destroyers, submarines, auxiliary cruisers and Q-ships. Others served in units of the battle fleet including a large number with the West Indies Squadron who became casualties at the Battle of Coronel. One such casualty was armed naval drifter HMT Frons Olivae, which hit a mine off Ramsgate on 12 October 1915 in an explosion killed at least five other seamen. One casualty, a Newfoundlander serving with the Royal Naval Reserve, was buried in the Hamilton Road Cemetery, Deal. Merchant service officers and men serving in armed merchant cruisers, hospital ships, fleet auxiliaries, although considerably smaller than both the RN and the RNVR, the RNR had an exceptional war record, members being awarded twelve Victoria Crosses. Again, RNR officers found themselves in command of destroyers, frigates, sloops, landing craft and submarines, or as specialist navigation officers in cruisers, in convoy work, the convoy commodore or escort commander was often an RNR officer. As in the First World War, the RNR acquitted itself well, during the Second World War, no more ratings were accepted into the RNVR, which then became the main route for wartime officer entry. The service was called the Wavy Navy, after the 3/8-inch wavy sleeve rings that RNVR officers wore to differentiate them from RN/RNR officers. From 30 November 2007, mainly due to increasing involvement of the RNR in RN operations and deployments, similarly, RNR ratings no longer wear RNR shoulder flashes. From 1938 until 1957, the RNVR provided aircrew personnel in the form of their own Air Branch, in 1947, their contribution was cut to anti-submarine and fighter squadrons only. Abbeyhill

Abbeyhill is an area of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. As with many parts of the city, the area has varying definitions. It is in the locale of the recently constructed Scottish Parliament building, contains several old churches and other historic sites, abbeyhill is one of the oldest parts of the city, taking its name from Holyrood Abbey, a major historic religious site. The main east-west thoroughfare through the area is London Road, laid in the 1820s as part of the Calton development of the New Town and it was from here that James Tytler made Britains first hot-air balloon flight in 1784, landing about half a mile away in Restalrig. Another area of character is the rows, several streets of colony houses on the north side of London Road. It is not a retail or commercial area. Ardmillan

Ardmillan is a mainly residential suburb of Edinburgh, Scotland. The boundary north of Ardmillan is bordered by the area of Dalry, to the west is the area of Gorgie, and to the east is the area of Fountainbridge. Polwarth and Merchiston are to the south of Ardmillan, the name means the high bare place in Scottish Gaelic. The area contains many tenements as well as Diggers pub, so called because the gravediggers from the graveyard in the Ardmillan-Dalry area would go in there after work. Another pub in the area, the Caledonian Sample Room, is mistakenly assumed to be owned by Caledonian brewery. The first is St Michaels Parish Church, which is an ecumenical church, building of the church began in 1879 and was completed for services in 1883. There is also an old congregation of Wesleyan Methodists in the area, Ardmillan is also home to a large, modern health centre called Ardmillan House. The health centre is the location of the South East Scotland Breast Screening Centre, on the southern boundary with Merchiston is a large public park - Harrison Park. Baberton is a suburb of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It is south-west of the Edinburgh City Bypass and Wester Hailes, the village of Juniper Green is situated to the south of Baberton and Baberton Golf Course is to the west. Most of Baberton comprises a housing built in the early 1970s by George Wimpey. All streets take the Baberton name but some streets in Juniper Green also take the name, Baberton House was designed and built in 1623 for his own occupation by the architect Sir James Murray of Kilbaberton, Kings Master of Works. It is located to the west of Murrayfield and Saughtonhall, to the east of Corstorphine and it is bound to the north by Corstorphine Hill, to the west by Carrick Knowe Golf Course, and roughly to the east by Water of Leith. It does not, as some etymologies have suggested, come from Ball Green, the Gaelic Bal- prefix can also be found in Balerno and is not unusual in the area. The placename Balgreen is also found near Murieston in West Lothian Lothian, the Water of Leith flows through here with the Water of Leith Walkway connecting the area to Stockbridge, Edinburgh to the north east and Colinton and Balerno to the south west. Bankhead is a non-residential area of west Edinburgh, Scotland. It borders the bypass to the west, the Calders to the south, Sighthill to the east and it is mostly occupied by a large industrial park. Amongst the companies here, Royal Mail and Burtons Biscuits have a large presence, ethicon also had a plant here, but it has closed, and will reportedly be replaced by a sports facilities. Stevenson College and the former Sighthill campus of Napier University are just to the west, the main Edinburgh-Glasgow railway line passes along the northern boundary and is served by Edinburgh Park station. Blackhall is a suburb in the north west of the Scottish capital city Edinburgh. There is also evidence that the street name March Road is derived from Marsh Road, as the area was bog, nowadays Blackhall is a mainly residential area with amenities including a library and a small number of shops. Most of the housing in the neighbourhood was constructed in the inter-war period, Blackhall has numerous community and church-based groups including a bowling club, two Probus groups, and a horticultural society. There is a community council, Craigleith/Blackhall, that serves the area. The local school, Blackhall Primary School, has recently extended and parts rebuilt. One of the main routes of the city goes through the area, which borders Drylaw, Davidsons Mains. Bonaly is an area on the south-western outskirts of Edinburgh and the northern slopes of the Pentland Hills, lying within the Parish of Colinton. It is a mix of mainly post-war housing, woodland, pasture-land, Bonaly Burn has its sources in the hills above Bonaly and flows towards Oxgangs, where it becomes the Braid Burn. The Edinburgh City Bypass passes through Bonaly, the name Bonaly may be derived from the Scottish Gaelic Bonn àth Linne or from Bàn àth Linne. An alternative suggestion is that the derivation is from the Gaelic Bonn-aill, the placename has appeared in many different forms and spellings. Early variations include Banale in 1438, Bonala in 1538 and Bonally in 1531, other variations include Bonala, Bonalay, Boneyley, Bonnalay, Bonailie and Bonaley. In Timothy Ponts detailed 1654 map of Scotland, it appears as a settlement close to the Pentland Hills, labelled Bonely. Harrison Gardens and Harrison Place, in the Edinburgh district of Merchiston, were originally named Bonaly Road and they were renamed in 1965 to avoid confusion with similar addresses in Colinton. Although now considered to be part of the Edinburgh suburb of Colinton and this existed on the banks of the Bonaly Burn, close to the present-day site of Bonaly Tower, until its destruction after 1811. In the 12th century, Norman barons began to arrive in Scotland, the lands of Bonaly formed part of the Barony of Redhall which also included Redhall itself, Oxgangs, Comiston, Swanston, Dreghorn, Pilmuir, Woodhall and Colinton. The earliest mention of Bonaly may be from 1280, when it appears in an account of legal proceedings concerning straying livestock, in 1400, the Barony – and the ownership of Bonaly – was granted to Sir William Cunningham of Kilmaurs, by Robert III. Some time after 1538, ownership passed to James Foulis, who became Baron Colinton, the Foulis family were supporters of the Royalist cause during the Civil War. Their fortunes suffered badly after Cromwells victorious campaign in Scotland and they were forced to sell off much of their lands, in the aftermath of Cromwells campaign, English troops were billeted at Bonaly. The village of Bonaly is likely to have been home to a modest population of tenant farmers, living in cot-houses, raising livestock and practising the open system of rig. They may have supplemented their income with weaving and it is difficult to estimate the size of the settlement at this time but the area under cultivation was extensive. Traces of rig and furrow cultivation strips can be seen in the high above Bonaly. By the 17th century, Bonaly appears to have been thriving and is mentioned frequently in the Kirk Session records. In addition to the dwellings of the tenant farmers, there was a farmhouse, several waulk mills, a skinnery, a distillery, a magnesia factory. These industries stood on the banks of the Bonaly Burn, which was used as a power-source, prior to the damming of its tributaries, the Lady Burn and the Dean Burn, Bonaly Burn would have provided a more powerful flow of water for milling

Bonnington is a district of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. The area centres upon a village which grew up around a ford on the Water of Leith on the old boundary between Edinburgh and the port of Leith. The district lies between the districts of Pilrig and Newhaven, the land and mills of Bonnytoun formed part of the Barony of Broughton mentioned in King David I’s confirmation charter to the Abbey of Holyrood in 1143. Like the nearby village of Canonmills, Bonnington was a milling village making use of the river’s water-power, in 1617 the land and mills were sold to the Town Council of Edinburgh by the then landowners, the Logans of Restalrig. At the Council’s invitation, a Dutchman Jeromias van der Heill was installed in 1621 as a dyer to teach his craft locally, the house built for him, named Bonnyhaugh by a later occupant, still stands. When the mill buildings were demolished in the face of protests in the 1980s. The low cottage at its side was the original dying room, a waterwheel of the ‘undershot’ type, from the Bonnington Mills, has been saved and in the 1980s was moved to a new position on the site of the mill lade. The water level in the lade was controlled by a gate at the nearby weir at Redbraes. The water power generated was used to mill grain, weave cloth, tan leather, Bonnington Road became a toll road at the end of the 18th century, hence the name Bonnington Toll at the Newhaven Road junction. The old toll house at the Leith end still exists, a two storey stone house on the edge of the Swanfield Industrial Estate. A bridge over the ford was built in 1812 and replaced by the present bridge in 1902-03, in 1832, Robert Burns’ skinworks occupied the site of Bonnington Mills. The Burns tenement, built on Newhaven Road to house the workers, was renovated in the 1970s. A stone tablet on the tenement depicts a sheep and the tools of the tanners trade, some of these premises have been abandoned or converted to new uses in recent decades. One of the developments in the area from the 1980s is the storage depot of the John Lewis Partnership in Bonnington Road Lane. The former Bonnington Church united with North Leith Parish Church in 1968, with the united congregation using the North Leith Parish Church building in Madeira Street. New housing built along the bank has changed the face of the area around Bonnington Mills. The former Bonnington Primary School reopened on 16 August 2013 as Bun-sgoil Taobh na Pàirce, a core of industries and businesses lay on either side of the Water of Leith. Graham Street was cleared of traditional tenements in the 1960s to build low-grade industry, whilst industrial uses were protected in the area, recent planning changes have led to residential uses being likely to take over altogether

Broomhouse is a district of Edinburgh, Scotland. Although on the lands of Old Saughton, its name is adopted from an estate which was located to the north of the Edinburgh/Glasgow railway line, the earliest recorded versions of the name were variations on Brumhous. It mainly comprises a low-rise council housing built between 1947 and 1950. It borders on Parkhead, Sighthill, and Saughton Mains, the Glasgow railway passes to the north but there is no station. The arterial route of Calder Road passes to the south, there are two schools, a community centre, two Church congregations and a counselling centre here. Medical and library facilities are in nearby Sighthill and Corstorphine, parallel to Broomhouse Drive was Scotlands first bus guideway opened in 2004 and was 1. 5km of two-lane dedicated guided busway, the longest section of continuous bus guideway in the UK. Broughton is an ancient feudal barony, today within the City of Edinburgh, Scotland that was once known for its witchcraft. The feudal barony of Broughton in the 16th and 17th centuries was in the hands of the Bellenden family, Sir John Bellenden of Broughton, Knt. Broughton passed to his son, Sir Lewis Bellenden, Knt, Lord Justice-Clerk and a Lord of Session, who is cited as one of the Ruthven Raiders and ultimately to William Bellenden, 1st Lord Bellenden of Broughton. Its modern borders are defined, approximately, as being Leith Walk in the south east, Broughton Street in the south west, Broughton Road in the north west and McDonald Road in the north east. Moving clockwise from south east, Broughton is bordered by Greenside and Calton, the New Town, Canonmills, Broughtons main thoroughfare is Broughton Street. The street has many independent speciality shops, Broughton is today at the centre of Edinburghs pink triangle, an area of the city with a number of gay bars and clubs. The Broughton Spurtle, Broughtons Independent Stirrer is a community newspaper for Broughton and it has been running since February 1994. Broughton High School was formerly located in Broughton, but is now located further west in Comely Bank, the Scottish poet Hugh MacDiarmid undertook part of his formal education at Broughton High. Schools still located in Broughton include Drummond Community High School, Broughton Primary School, the Scottish folk band Silly Wizard were based for some time in a flat located at 69 Broughton Street. Phil Cunningham, member of Silly Wizard and younger brother of the founder, Johnny Cunningham. Gayfield Square Police station, which is featured in the Inspector Rebus stories written by Edinburgh-based writer Ian Rankin, is located on Gayfield Square in the south east of Broughton, Edinburghs first traffic lights were installed in Broughton Street in 1928. Gayfield House is a Category A listed building at 18 East London Street, in 1765 the Butlers sold it for £2,000 to Thomas, Lord Erskine and his wife Lady Charlotte Hope. In 1767, after Lord Erskines death it was sold to the Earl of Leven, an entry in the Scots Magazine in 1766 states, Marriage. At Gayfield, near Edinburgh, the Earl of Hopetoun to Lady Betty Leven, a late 18th century print shows Gayfield House standing in attractive grounds, surrounded by fields and by orchards, bounded to the South East by Leith Walk. The fortunes of the house declined in the 19th century as Edinburgh expanded. Loss of garden ground and the ever-approaching tenements around made it attractive as a private house. In 1873, it was sold to William Williams as Edinburghs New Veterinary College and this closed in 1904 and it was then bought by a merchant who stored manure in the downstairs rooms. After World War 1 it was used as a laundry which also manufactured ammonia, in the 1970s it was used as a garage and for car repairs, a hole was opened in its facade and the basement was used as a garage

Brunstane is a northeastern suburb of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland. It lies on the A1 and is served by Brunstane railway station on the Borders Railway, prominent local features include the Milton Road campus of the Edinburgh College and Edinburghs largest Asda supermarket. Extensive shopping and some facilities are close by at the Fort Kinnaird retail park nearby. And the beach at Portobello Much of the area at one time constituted the policies of Brunstane House, occupied from medieval times and sometimes referred to as Gilbertoun the house was occupied by the Crichton family during the Reformation, infamous for conspiring against Cardinal Beaton. In 1545 both George Wishart and John Knox stayed at the house, the current house was built in 1639 for John Maitland, 1st Duke of Lauderdale, incorporating an L-plan house dating from the 1560s and early 14th century elements built for the Crichton family. It was extended by Sir William Bruce in 1672 and bought by Andrew Fletcher and he employed William Adam to rebuild parts of the house and install interior panelling, plasterwork and other features. The house includes some of the earliest known examples of sash windows in Scotland, the house had an interesting sales history, changing hands many times. 19 March 1703 - inherited by Lyonell, Earl of Dysart only son of the Duchess of Lauderdale. 31 May 1736 - sold to the Duke of Argyle 1746- sold to James and he died in his house 13 December 1766. 15 February 1769- properties reamalgamated and sold to James, 8th Earl of Abercorn, in 1875 his descendant the 1st Duke of Abercorn sold the house to the Benhar Coal Company for the mineral rights. They parcelled off the land and sold on the house, now stripped of its estate lands, upstream of Brunstane the burn goes variously by the names of the Niddrie Burn, Burdiehouse Burn and Lothian Burn. Bruntsfield is an area of Edinburgh, Scotland, about mile south-west of the city centre. In feudal times, it fell within the barony of Colinton, the modern district of Bruntsfield lies west of Bruntsfield Links, beyond which lies the district of Marchmont. Merchiston is to the west and Tollcross to the north, to the south and east lies the former estate of Greenhill, and to the south Morningside. The estate built on land originally belongng to Bruntsfield House is called Marchmont, many of the street names reflect the association with that family. The whole area lay within the Burgh Muir of Edinburgh, from which a former farm Burghmuirhead took its name which passed eventually to an area within Bruntsfield. The Burgh Muir stretched all the way through from the present-day Meadows to the Braid Burn at the foot of the slopes of the Pentland Hills. The junction where Bruntsfield meets Burghmuirhead on the road to Morningside is popularly known as Holy Corner from its cluster of Victorian churches. Bruntsfield Links is home to a pitch and putt golf course serves as a reminder that it was one of the earliest places where golf was played in the Edinburgh area. The Links continue north east to Melville Drive where they meet The Meadows, at the southern end of the links, near Bruntsfield House, a sunken area formed by a former quarry is known locally as Tumblers Hollow. The original name for the area was Brounysfelde or Browns Fields, after the owner of Bruntsfield House and it appears from subsequent charters that the Lauders acquired Bruntisfield at about the same time, unless it was all part and parcel of the 1381 acquisition. J. Stewart-Smith states that Bruntsfield Manor, or as it is known today and they significantly rebuilt the mansion house. In 1603 Sir Alexander Lauder sold it to John Fairlie of the family of Braid, Fairlie carried out extensive work to the original building, which is incorporated in the present mansion. His great-grandson, William Fairlie of Brounsfield, was still in possession after the reign of Mary and he sold Brounisfield to George Warrender of Lochend – then Baillie and afterwards Lord Provost of Edinburgh – in July 1695, and that family were still in possession in 1900. Until just before the Second World War the Union flag flew regularly over the house whenever the family were in residence, by 1915 the feuing of the Bruntsfield Estate Marchmont was complete and no more than seven acres around the house remained in possession of the family. Bruntsfield House passed into Council ownership and since the 1970s has been incorporated into James Gillespies High School as the main admin block. The house was categorised as a Listed Building by Historic Scotland in the days of that agency. Bruntsfield was home to other mansions, not least that of Wrychtishousis on an adjacent to present-day Gillespie Crescent. It was replaced by Gillespies Hospital, built 1803-1805, the site is now occupied by offices of the Royal Blind Asylum and apartments for the elderly run by the Viewpoint Housing Association

The Calders

The Calders are a mainly residential part of Sighthill, in Edinburgh, Scotland. They are sometimes considered to be part of Wester Hailes or Sighthill and they are not to be confused with the Calders of West Lothian, aka West Calder, Mid Calder and East Calder. The Union Canal goes by here into the city, the Calders also contains the Wester Hailes Education Centre. The bulk of the stock is council owned, and the area contains some of the remaining high rises in Edinburgh. The majority of the buildings are four storeys high, with a small percentage two storey, all of which were built in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Before they were built, the area contained prewar prefabs, when these buildings were demolished, the residents were rehoused in the new scheme. Cameron Toll

Cameron Toll is a suburb located to the south of Edinburgh, Scotland. Originally it was the site of a house built in the early 19th century. The area is now dominated by a roundabout, which is crossed by a railway line. Cameron Toll is 1½ miles from Edinburgh city centre,2 miles from the Edinburgh City Bypass and is served by bus services to and from Edinburgh. It is close to The Grange and Newington and the called the Inch. The area is the location of Cameron Toll Shopping Centre, Edinburgh’s first ‘out of town’ shopping centre, built in the former grounds of Inch House between the A7 and A701 roads, the centre occupies a 26-acre site. The shopping centre was built on the flood plain of the Braid Burn. Flooding of the area took place soon after the opening and has recurred several times. Between 2004 and 2010 the City of Edinburgh Council implemented flood prevention measures along much of the course of the Braid Burn, however the shopping centre and its immediate environs remain a target area for which the Scottish Environment Protection Agency undertakes to provide flood warnings as necessary. Cammo

Cammo is a north-western suburb of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It is south of A90, at the edge of the city, the name is Celtic in origin, but could have originated either in Scottish Gaelic or Cumbric. In the former case it would be a form of Gaelic cambas bay. Creek, in the latter it would be from Brittonic *cambāco-, to the west of the housing area there is the former estate of Cammo House. The house was built for John Menzies in 1693, and the parkland was laid out between 1710-26 by Sir John Clerk of Penicuik. In 1741, the passed to the Watsons of Saughton at which time it was called New Saughton. The house was bequeathed to the National Trust for Scotland in 1975 but, in 1977, the house was considered unsafe and was reduced to its external ground floor walls. In 1980 the City of Edinburgh Council was gifted the estate, the Council now maintain the grounds and operates a ranger service. Cammo is thought to have been the inspiration for the House of Shaws in Robert Louis Stevensons novel Kidnapped, Cammo Tower is a 19th-century water tower for Cammo House. Other remains include the stable block, a formal canal, a bridge. The grounds are now used by people for walking in, although other sections remain as farmland

The Canongate

The Canongate is a district of Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland. The name derives from the burgh of Canongate founded by David I of Scotland c.1143 and it remained an autonomous burgh under its own administration until its incorporation into the adjacent growing city of Edinburgh, in 1856. The district takes its name from the street called Canongate which forms the lower. The eastern end is sometimes referred to as the Holyrood area of the city. However, whilst Holyrood and Canongate derive their origin from the source, Holyrood was a regality in its own right. The boundary is broadly analogous with the Holyrood Sanctuary or current precincts of the Palace, the Canongate is named after the canons of Holyrood Abbey and the Scots word gait meaning way. In 1691 the Canongate Kirk was opened, replacing Holyrood Abbey as the church of the Canongate. The church is used for Sunday services as well as weekday concerts. The Canongate owes its existence primarily to the establishment of Holyrood Abbey in 1128, King David I, who established the Abbey, gave the surrounding area to the Augustinian canons then resident at Edinburgh Castle in the form of a regality. The King also gave leave to the Canons to establish a burgh, the area originally covered by the Canongate included the lands of Broughton, areas around the Pleasance and North Leith, giving the canons access to a port. Holyrood Palace was developed from the 14th Century onwards as successive monarchs made increasing use of the Abbey for political events such as parliaments and royal councils. The word Pallais appears in a reference to the lodgings in the reign of James IV. The burgh of Canongate had a turbulent relationship with its neighbour. The main reason for this was the battle over their exact boundaries up until their unification in 1856. King James VI of Scotlands accession to the throne of England in 1603 began the long, the loss of the royal court from the Palace of Holyroodhouse inevitably affected the wealth of the surrounding area. The Canongate was an important district during the Scottish Enlightenment partly because of the presence of the Canongate Theatre, the philosopher David Hume performed in a play staged there. Sir Walter Scott writing in 1827 stated, Sir Sic itur ad Astra, due to the redevelopment of the 1950s/60s the once overcrowded and poverty-stricken area suffered from serious depopulation. Canonmills

Canonmills is a district of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It lies to the south east of the Royal Botanic Garden at Inverleith, east of Stockbridge and west of Bellevue, the area was formerly a loch which was drained in three phases in the 18th and 19th centuries, disappearing finally in 1865. Formerly a small village, Canonmills owes its origins and name, in the way as the Canongate. It is shown pictorially as a cluster of buildings, three of which have waterwheels, on the 1560 Siege of Leith map, at a later period a mill lade from the Water of Leith reached the area via the village of Silvermills to the east. It is now incorporated into a wall of the Canonmills Service Station, the only surviving building of the original village is a pantile-roofed former mill building on the corner of Eyre Place and Canon Street. Until c.1995 further remnants existed on Eyre Terrace, the George V Park, occupying the old Canon Mill Haugh to the south east, used to be a popular sporting arena. The principal feature was the circular Great Sea Serpent which could seat 600 rowers embarking and disembarking at four separate piers. The tunnel, built under Scotland Street in 1847 by the Edinburgh, Leith, trains descended the tunnel under gravity, controlled by two men operating handbrakes in two front wagons. For the return journey, 150mm steel cables were attached to the trains which were pulled up the slope by a stationary winding-engine at the Waverley end, the bridge linking Canonmills to Inverleith Row was built in 1767, its single arch replaced by three arches in 1840. Church Hill is a street and small surrounding area in Edinburgh, Scotland. It lies immediately to the north of Morningside and south of Bruntsfield, technically it is part of Burghmuirhead, all of Burghmuirhead was once part of the lands of Greenhill. The original Burghmuirhead House remains at the end of a lane on the west side of Morningside Road near Church Hill itself, to the west is Merchiston and east are Greenhill and The Grange. The area is mainly Georgian and Victorian villas, and Victorian tenements, the area is affluent, as with much of south Edinburgh, with a mixture of residential and retail buildings. Colinton

Colinton is a suburb of Edinburgh, Scotland situated 6 kilometres south west of the city centre. Up until the late 18th century it appears on maps as Collington and it is bordered by Dreghorn to the south and Craiglockhart to the north-east. To the north-west it extends to Lanark Road and to the south-west to the City Bypass, Bonaly is a subsection of the area on its southern side. Colinton is a conservation area. Originally sited within a steep-sided glen on a convenient fording point on the Water of Leith, the current exterior largely dates from 1907 but the structure dates from 1650. The entrance is marked by a gate, rare in Scotland. The cemetery contains the war memorial. One unique grave within the cemetery is a Norwegian War Grave, the nearby 15th century Colinton Castle, in the grounds of what is now Merchiston Castle School, was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell during his invasion of Scotland. Following repair, the castle was partially demolished by the artist Alexander Nasmyth in order to create a picturesque ruin. A number of innovative Arts and Crafts style cottages were constructed in the village in the early 1900s by the architect Sir Robert Lorimer. Between 1909 and 1915, the War Office constructed Redford Barracks to the east of the village, the barracks represent the largest military installation built in Scotland since Fort George in the Highlands and they provide military accommodation, together with offices and training facilities. As part of the UK governments defence spending review, Redford and Dreghorn Barracks are deemed surplus to requirements, the village was the location for mills producing textiles, snuff, and paper. The Caledonian Railway Company constructed a new line connecting Slateford and Balerno in 1874. This line continued to carry traffic until 1943, and finally closed when the carriage of freight was discontinued in the 1960s. Today, Colinton is a suburb in Edinburgh, the original heart of Colinton is still referred to as Colinton Village, with small speciality shops and many original buildings remaining intact. The Dell extends along the Water of Leith Walkway from Colinton Parish Church towards Slateford and it is a natural habitat for wildlife. The walkway and cycle path pass by original mill buildings and old tunnel that dates back to when the path was part of the railway line. Comely Bank

Comely Bank is an area of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It lies south-west of Royal Botanic Garden and is situated between Stockbridge and Craigleith, the ground was originally part of Sir William Fettes estate. The original development was a terrace of Georgian town-houses built to face the main east-west road leading to Stockbridge and this was designed by Thomas Brown in 1817 and still stands today. The Victorian writer Thomas Carlyle lived in Comely Bank Road between 1819 and 1821 before achieving literary success, at that time, the terrace at the western end of the road was the last row of houses in Edinburgh before the village of Blackhall. Although there was a burst of construction in the late 19th century. Flora Stevenson School 1900 by John Alexander Carfrae St Stephens Church 1901 by J. N, the cemetery has lost its original southern entrance and its ornate gate piers now lead only into a modern housing estate. It is now accessible from its north-east corner, on Crewe Road. There has been much vandalism in the cemetery and it is notable largely due to an abnormally high number of war graves, due to its juxtaposition to two of the citys hospitals in WW2. This includes Britains youngest in-service death, Reginald Earnshaw only 14 years old

Comiston is a suburb of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It is south of Morningside and west of the Braid Hills, linking the suburbs of Oxgangs, the main road through the area, Comiston Road, is a continuation of Morningside Road, and further south becomes Biggar Road. It is classified as the A702 which indeed runs eventually to Biggar, Comiston House was owned by the Forrest baronets. Its most notable occupant was Sir James Forrest, 1st Baronet and its grounds now form Fairmilehead Public Park

Corstorphine

Corstorphine is a village and parish to the west of Edinburgh, now considered a suburb of that city. Traffic on the street, St Johns Road, is often heavy. The actual High Street itself is no longer the high street, famous residents include the author Helen Cruickshank. Corstorphine is also featured in the Robert Louis Stevenson novel, Kidnapped and is the birthplace of Alexander Thomson, the area was once served by Corstorphine railway station which provided direct railway access to Edinburgh Waverley, which closed on 30th December 1967. A cycle route runs along the track of the railway line. Edinburgh Zoo is situated to the south-east of Corstorphine, and is the areas largest and most popular tourist attraction, there are a number of local shops mostly located on St. Johns Road and two supermarkets located at the bottom of Corstorphine Hill on Clermiston Road. Corstorphine Hill is one of the so-called Seven Hills of Edinburgh, Queen Margaret Universitys main campus was located there from 1970 until 2007, when the university moved to Musselburgh. In the area is Corstorphine Primary School, a school catering for children between typically 5-12 years of age. There are also two state primary schools on the edge of the village next to Corstorphine Hill, Fox Covert Primary School. The state secondary school serves the area is Craigmount High School. The earliest known form of the name is Crostorfin, recorded in 1128 and this probably means Torfins crossing, in ancient times, much of the land in the area consisted of small lochs and marshes, with Corstorphine situated at an ideal crossing point. The identity of Torfin is not certainly known, but he was likely a local baron who commanded a stronghold by the crossing, the name is a Gaelicised version of the Norse name Thorfinnr, and was popular in Scotland around 1000. A popular legend, now discredited, states that a cross of fine gold was presented to the church by a Norman baron. Old Corstorphine stood on a piece of dry land, between two lochs – the Gogar Loch and Corstorphine Loch, though both have now been drained. The first noticed proprietors of Corstorphine were David le Mareschall, in the reign of Alexander II and it was next held by William More of Abercorne, who left it to his brother, Gilchrist More, by whom it was sold to Adam Forester. A principal family in the area were the Lords Forresters, whose name has given to several streets. Their main home, Corstorphine Castle, a stronghold, was in ruins by the end of the eighteenth century. The only remnant of the castle is the sixteenth century doocot which stands alongside Dovecot Road, the lands and Barony of Corstorphine have long been associated with the Forrester family

Cowgate

The Cowgate is a street in Edinburgh, Scotland, located about 550 yards southeast of Edinburgh Castle, within the citys World Heritage Site. The street is part of the level of Edinburghs Old Town. Consequently, the Cowgate can be quite gloomy and dark in sections and it meets the Grassmarket at its west end and Holyrood Road to the east. The streets name is recorded from 1428, in various spellings, as Cowgate and it is derived from the medieval practice of herding cattle down the street on market days, a number of other streets in the old town of Edinburgh also reflect their market roots. Gate is a Scots language word for way or road, a cognate of similar words in other Germanic languages, between the mid 18th and mid 20th centuries the Cowgate was a poor, often overcrowded slum area. In the 19th century it was home to much of the citys Irish immigrant community, in the evening of 7 December 2002, a fire started above the Belle Angele nightclub off the Cowgate. It swept up through the eight storey structure to other buildings on Cowgate and it took more than a day for the fire, fought at its height by 19 fire crews, to be extinguished. 150 people were forced to flee the flames, but no lives were lost, Little current research data was lost in the fire due to offsite backups. In 2005 work began on a new building, the Informatics Forum, also destroyed was the Gilded Balloon, a major venue for the Edinburgh Fringe, and offices for both the Gilded Balloon and Underbelly venues housed in an 1823 listed warehouse by Thomas Hamilton. The Gilded Balloon later moved to premises in Teviot Row House, the First Minister of Scotland appealed to the UNESCO World Heritage Fund for money to assist in the redevelopment of the site. The site has been used as a Fringe venue again. Construction began in 2012 and was completed in late 2013, the main components of the development are a small Sainsburys supermarket, a 259-bed Ibis Hotel, shops, restaurants, a nightclub and a vennel. In 2016, protesters camped out in Cowgate to prevent the building of luxury hotel by Jansons Property, MSP Andy Wightman offered his support to the campaign. The oldest building lies to the west end, but is sandwiched between other buildings and easily missed. It stands on the side of the street, just west of where George IV Bridge crosses over the Cowgate. This is the Magdalen Chapel, a 16th-century almshouse chapel built with monies left by Michael MacQueen in 1537. Work was completed in 1544 and it operated as a hospital almshouse under the control of MacQueens widow, Janet Rynd until her death in 1553, the entrance as seen from the Cowgate was rebuilt in 1613. The spire was added in 1620, st. Cecilias Hall by Robert Mylne was built for the Musical Society of Edinburgh in 1763

Craigentinny

Craigentinny is a suburb in the east of Edinburgh, Scotland. It lies in the north-east of the city, east of Restalrig and its name is a corruption of the Scottish Gaelic Creag an t-Sionnaich meaning Foxrock or Creag an teine meaning Fire Crag. Previously moorland, the first major house was built in the 1604 and this house, Craigentinny Castle, gives its name to the wider area. It was built by James Nisbet of the Nisbet family associated more strongly with the Dean area of the city, the land was bought from the Logan family of Restalrig. It was bought around 1760 by William Miller, son of Thomas Miller, in 1849/50 it was remodelled by David Rhind for Christie Miller, William Millers great nephew. The lands were previously under the control of Leith rather than Edinburgh. When Edinburgh took over Leith in 1920 its main objective was not Leith itself and this acquisition allowed Edinburgh to expand northwards rather than southwards. However, the land which would have served Leith for centuries of expansion was squandered in environmental terms, in a period of only 20 years much of the area was covered with low density bungalows. Elsewhere, in 1932 the Council developed the area with 520 houses, the most distinctive and unique structure in the area is the mausoleum to William Henry Miller by David Rhind dating from 1845 with world-class marble panels by Sir Alfred Gatley on all sides. This was subsumed by bungalows in the 1930s and now stands on Craigentinny Crescent and it is generally known as the Craigentinny Marbles. Although it is written that William Henry Miller was sometimes called Christie, Christie was the great nephew of William Henry. The confusion is compounded by a street near the monument being called Christiemiller Avenue, Craigentinny Golf Course is an 18-hole par 67 course lying on the north edge of the district close to Seafield and the Firth of Forth. Craigleith, Edinburgh

Craigleith is a district of west Edinburgh, Scotland. Its name comes from forms of Craig of Inverleith or rock or hill of Inverleith. Because of its hardness, Craigleith Sandstone was also favoured for cutting stones used in the making of cut glass during the Victorian era. The Craigleith area extends from Ravelston Dykes, to Crewe Toll and the Ferry Road, Queensferry Road and Craigleith Road both pass through here. The area is middle class, across the entire range. There is a number of private schools near here, notably Stewarts Melville College. Craigleith Retail Park was built upon the infilled Craigleith Quarry in 1995 and is situated at the junction of Queensferry Road, the Royal Victoria Hospital is off Craigleith Road while the Western General Hospital on Crewe Road was opened in 1868 as the Craigleith Hospital and Poorhouse.
