A sequel is a work of literature, theatre, music or video game that continues the story of, or expands upon, some earlier work. In the common context of a narrative work of fiction, a sequel portrays events set in the same fictional universe as an earlier work chronologically following the events of that work. In many cases, the sequel continues elements of the original story with the same characters and settings. A sequel can lead to a series. Although the difference between more than one sequel and a series is somewhat arbitrary, it is clear that some media franchises have enough sequels to become a series, whether planned as such or not. Sequels are attractive to creators and to publishers because there is less risk involved in returning to a story with known popularity rather than developing new and untested characters and settings. Audiences are sometimes eager for more stories about popular characters or settings, making the production of sequels financially appealing. In movies, sequels are common.

There are many name formats for sequels. Sometimes, they either have a letter added on the end. More they have numbers at the end or have added words on the end, it is common for a sequel to have a variation of the original title or have a subtitle. In the 1930s, many musical sequels had the year included in the title. Sometimes sequels are released with different titles in different countries, because of the perceived brand recognition. There are several ways. Various neologisms have been coined to describe them; the most common approach is for the events of the second work to directly follow the events of the first one, either resolving remaining plot threads or introducing a new conflict to drive the events of the second story. This is called a direct sequel. A legacy sequel is a work which follows the continuity of the original work, but takes place further along the timeline focusing on new characters with the original ones still present in the plot. Legacy sequels are sometimes direct sequels that ignore previous installments effectively retconning preceding events.

An example of this is Halloween, a direct sequel to Halloween. When a work is set in the same universe, yet has little if any narrative connection to its predecessor, can stand on its own without a thorough understanding of the series, the work can be referred to as a standalone sequel. 2 Fast 2 Furious, Mad Max: Fury Road, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Son of the Mask and Cars 3 are examples of stand-alone movie sequels. A sequel to the first sequel might be referred to as a "third installment", a threequel, or a second sequel. An installment, made following the original product, that portrays events prior those of the original work is called a prequel. Parallels, paraquels, or sidequels are stories that run at the same point in time within the timeline of the story. Midquel is a term used to refer to works. There are different types such as interquels. Interquels are stories that take place in between two preceding stories and serve as a sequel to one, a prequel to another simultaneously. For example, if'movie C' is an interquel of'movies A' and'B', the events of'movie C' take place after the events of'movie A', but before the events of'movie B'.

Rogue One of the Star Wars Saga is an "interquel" since it takes place between Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Intraquels on the other hand are works which focus on events that place between the events of a single film. Examples include Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas which takes place during Christmas between the beginning and the end of Beauty and the Beast, Bambi II, which takes place during the gap between the death of Bambi's mother and the character's reappearance as a young adult in Bambi. In The Afterlife of a Character, David Brewer describes a reader's desire to "see more", or to know what happens next in the narrative after it has ended; this capacity for expansive curiosity is not restricted to a particular era in human history. Indeed, we can point to Homer's Odyssey as a sequel to the Iliad in the sense that it expands upon plot and character elements established in the first text; that both the Odyssey and the Iliad were written in the 8th century B.

C. E. and are traditionally held to represent the first extant works of western literature lends credence to the ubiquity of sequels in literary history. The Judeo-Christian Bible is a common referent in that sense. Many of the works included in the Hebrew Scriptures can be classified as sequels in that they continue and expand on a general narrative, pre-established by previous books in the same collection. In addition, the development of an official canon allows for the distinction between official and unofficial sequels. In this context, apocrypha might be considered an early form of informal sequel literature. Sequels become an important facet of Western literature throughout history; the medieval genre of chivalric romance, in particular, contains massive networks of prequel and sequel literature. The origin of the sequel as we think of it in the 21st century developed from the novella and romance traditions in a slow process that culminated towards the end of the 17th century; the substantial shift toward a growing print culture and the rise of the market system by the early 18th-century meant that an author's merit and livelihood became linked to the number of copies of a work he or she could sell.

Encarna Sánchez

Encarna Sánchez was an influential Spanish talk radio host and current events commentator. Viewed as a conservative, her views were of great influence on working, middle classes and ruling Governments in Spain at that time, she was well known for her coverage of political scandals, such as those surrounding the collapse of Felipe González's government in 1996. She won three Ondas Awards, an annual recognition given in Spain to major media personalities and shows, her show was not explicitly political, concerned itself with general issues relevant to the Spanish public. Her subject matter could be compared to that of The Oprah Winfrey Show, though Sánchez emphasized social issues, she is known for keeping in touch with her listeners’ daily problems through the show’s long call-in segments. Her style was more subdued and sympathetic in interviews; when she first appeared on radio, her powerful hoarse voice assisted her in drawing casual listeners surfing the airwaves. At the height of her popularity, she dominated the early evening timeslot, with ratings comparable to morning host Luis del Olmo, midnight sports host José María García, of Supergarcia fame.

Like García, but unlike del Olmo, she had many prominent enemies on whom she dealt strong criticism. Some were famous entertainment personalities, such as TV hosts. Others were important politicians. Encarna, the youngest of five siblings, was born in the little town of Carboneras, Almería on the Southeastern coast of Spain where a small square a few metres from the beach is named after her, she was only a few months old when her father, a Republican military official, was killed as he did not join the fascist uprising. When Encarna was 14 she used to meet her boyfriend after school, he worked for a local radio station in Almería and one day she was given the opportunity to sub for the regular host, a woman, ill at the time. The show editor, who happened to be the station manager, was impressed and offered her first contract, she was enamored with the world of radio broadcasting. The following year she moved to Madrid to pursue a career as a radio host in the Radio Juventud Network which has a training school there.

In her own words Encarna said that she'passed in one year the required courses which would take five'. As a professional she worked for Radio Juventud and Radio España, in Madrid, she was in charge of marketing at a San Sebastián radio station, in the Basque Country of Northern Spain. Back in Madrid she began to be a well-known voice with nightly shows such as Esto es España, Señores, CS y buen Viaje and La noche vista por mí. In 1970, Encarna accepted a contract in Mexico and worked for stations in the Dominican Republic and Los Angeles while she was studying radio production for the ABC network, she married a company manager in Los Angeles but they divorced after three years and she decided to come back to Spain at a time when the country was moving towards democracy, two years after Franco’s death in 1975. Though popular in Madrid and Barcelona when she returned to Spain, Encarna was not a'coast-to-coast' radio host yet, as Luis del Olmo, who had a program with that name was; that changed when she signed for COPE in a network she would not leave until her death.

In the period 1978-81 she was the queen of the nights with her Encarna de Noche show in Radio Miramar, Barcelona. She hosted Directamente Encarna in the early evenings since 1981. During the last years of her life, she faced lung cancer in her typical challenging brave hard-working mood. For some months, in her four-year fight, she flew daily to Switzerland for treatment in the morning to be at her desk in Madrid at 4 p.m. for the millions who had made it into a habit to tune into COPE to listen to the four-hour show. Once she started to fail to host more and more shows, speculation about her health began to spread in early 1996 as her listeners were given little information about a situation Encarna wanted to keep pretty much to herself by asking the few friends who knew about it not to reveal it was cancer. In her last months, she sometimes called up the show still being aired by COPE, in part because not the managers knew how serious her condition was and because of the great amount of revenue in sponsorship the show attracted without her.

In one of these calls, she referred to her disease as that'little ailment for which the doctor has advised a few days rest'. She said to the'millions of friends' that had encouraged her that'the sound radio has been for me, will continue to be, the shortest way to understand the road to friendship and, above all the road to loyalty… Now, I am here …You will smile again soon. You’ll come to meet me again. Soon I will be able to say with all the courage in the world: tremble, bunch of crooks!!'. Encarna Sánchez died of lung cancer on April 5, 1996, her voice has yet to find a comparable substitute. Though to many her style was extreme and somewhat fanatic, her shows, above all the early ones, always had some form of social commitment and service as she helped—and entertained— millions of Spaniards for over 30 years. In her lifetime, one of the controversies surrounded Martes y Trece, one of the most famous comedians in Spain ever; the best known sketch of the duo was about a confused mum, calling Encarna’s nightly show while frying small pies to talk about her two sons and their military service in Móstoles, a suburban town near Madri
