Kyoto

Kyoto is a city located in the central part of the island of Honshu, Japan. It has a close to 1.5 million. Kyoto is also known as the thousand-year capital, in Japanese, the city has been called Kyō, Miyako, or Kyō no Miyako. In the 11th century, the city was renamed Kyoto, after the Chinese word for capital city, after the city of Edo was renamed Tokyo in 1868, and the seat of the Emperor was transferred there, Kyoto was known for a short time as Saikyō. Obsolete spellings for the name include Kioto, Miaco and Meaco. Another term commonly used to refer to the city in the period was Keishi. His last choice for the site was the village of Uda, the new city, Heian-kyō, a scaled replica of the then Tang capital Changan, became the seat of Japans imperial court in 794, beginning the Heian period of Japanese history. The city suffered destruction in the Ōnin War of 1467–1477. Battles between samurai factions spilled into the streets, and came to involve the court nobility and religious factions as well, nobles mansions were transformed into fortresses, deep trenches dug throughout the city for defense and as firebreaks, and numerous buildings burned. The city has not seen such widespread destruction since, Hideyoshi also built earthwork walls called odoi encircling the city. Teramachi Street in central Kyoto is a Buddhist temple quarter where Hideyoshi gathered temples in the city, throughout the Edo period, the economy of the city flourished as one of three major cities in Japan, the others being Osaka and Edo. The Hamaguri rebellion of 1864 burnt down 28,000 houses in the city, the modern city of Kyoto was formed on April 1,1889. The construction of Lake Biwa Canal in 1890 is one taken to revive the city. The population of the city exceeded one million in 1932, stimson, Secretary of War in the Roosevelt and Truman administrations, the city was removed from the list of targets and replaced by Nagasaki. The city was spared from conventional bombing as well, although small-scale air raids did result in casualties. As a result, the Imperial City of Kyoto is one of the few Japanese cities that still have an abundance of prewar buildings, however, modernization is continually breaking down the traditional Kyoto in favor of newer architecture, such as the Kyōto Station complex. Kyoto became a city designated by government ordinance on September 1,1956, in 1997, Kyoto hosted the conference that resulted in the protocol on greenhouse gas emissions that bears the citys name. Kyoto Prefecture is a prefecture of Japan in the Kansai region of the island of Honshu. The capital is the city of Kyoto, until the Meiji Restoration, the area of Kyoto Prefecture was known as Yamashiro. For most of its history, the city of Kyoto was Japans Imperial capital, the citys history can be traced back as far as the 6th century. In 544, the Aoi Matsuri was held in Kyoto to pray for good harvest, Kyoto did not start out as Japans capital. A noteworthy earlier capital was Nara, in 741, Emperor Shōmu moved the capital briefly to Kuni-kyo, between the cities of Nara and Kyoto, in present-day Kyoto Prefecture. In 784, the capital was moved to Nagaokakyō, also in present-day Kyoto Prefecture, in 794, Emperor Kanmu moved the capital to Heian-kyo, and this was the beginning of the current-day city of Kyoto. Even today, almost all of the streets, houses, stores, temples and shrines in Kyoto exist where they were placed in this year, Imperial rule was briefly restored in 1333, but another samurai clan established a new shogunate in Kyoto three years later. In 1467, a civil war, the Ōnin no Ran, took place inside Kyoto. Japan plunged into the age of warring feudal lords, a new strong man, Tokugawa Ieyasu, established the shogunate at Edo in 1603. In the 15th century AD, tea-jars were brought by the shoguns to Uji in Kyoto from the Philippines which was used in the Japanese tea ceremony, the Meiji Restoration returned Japan to imperial rule in 1868. Emperor Meiji, who was now the absolute sovereign, went to stay in Tokyo during the next year, the imperial court has not returned to Kyoto since then. During the instigation of Fuhanken Sanchisei in 1868, the received its suffix fu. The subsequent reorganization of the old provincial system merged the former Tango Province, Yamashiro Province, although many Japanese major cities were heavily bombed by U. S. bombers during World War II, the old capital escaped such devastating bombing. Sixth Army was headquartered in Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture is almost in the center of Honshu and of Japan. It covers an area of 4,612.71 square kilometres, to the north, it faces the Sea of Japan and Fukui Prefecture. To the south, it faces Osaka and Nara Prefectures, to the east, it faces Mie and Shiga Prefectures. To the west, it faces Hyōgo Prefecture, the prefecture is separated in the middle by the Tanba Mountains. Japan is a sovereign island nation in Eastern Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies off the eastern coast of the Asia Mainland and stretches from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea, the kanji that make up Japans name mean sun origin. 日 can be read as ni and means sun while 本 can be read as hon, or pon, Japan is often referred to by the famous epithet Land of the Rising Sun in reference to its Japanese name. Japan is an archipelago consisting of about 6,852 islands. The four largest are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku, the country is divided into 47 prefectures in eight regions. Hokkaido being the northernmost prefecture and Okinawa being the southernmost one, the population of 127 million is the worlds tenth largest. Japanese people make up 98. 5% of Japans total population, approximately 9.1 million people live in the city of Tokyo, the capital of Japan. Archaeological research indicates that Japan was inhabited as early as the Upper Paleolithic period, the first written mention of Japan is in Chinese history texts from the 1st century AD. Influence from other regions, mainly China, followed by periods of isolation, from the 12th century until 1868, Japan was ruled by successive feudal military shoguns who ruled in the name of the Emperor. Japan entered into a period of isolation in the early 17th century. The Second Sino-Japanese War of 1937 expanded into part of World War II in 1941, which came to an end in 1945 following the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japan is a member of the UN, the OECD, the G7, the G8, the country has the worlds third-largest economy by nominal GDP and the worlds fourth-largest economy by purchasing power parity. It is also the worlds fourth-largest exporter and fourth-largest importer, although Japan has officially renounced its right to declare war, it maintains a modern military with the worlds eighth-largest military budget, used for self-defense and peacekeeping roles. Japan is a country with a very high standard of living. Its population enjoys the highest life expectancy and the third lowest infant mortality rate in the world, in ancient China, Japan was called Wo 倭. It was mentioned in the third century Chinese historical text Records of the Three Kingdoms in the section for the Wei kingdom, Wa became disliked because it has the connotation of the character 矮, meaning dwarf. The 倭 kanji has been replaced with the homophone Wa, meaning harmony, the Japanese word for Japan is 日本, which is pronounced Nippon or Nihon and literally means the origin of the sun. Caterpillar (2010 film)

Caterpillar is a 2010 Japanese drama film directed by Kōji Wakamatsu, partially drawn from Edogawa Ranpos banned short-story The Caterpillar. The film is a critique of the right-wing militarist nationalism that guided Japans conduct in Asia during the Second Sino-Japanese War, the film deals with various issues, such as war crimes, handicapped veterans, and spousal abuse. The film also deals with themes of sexual perversion and features graphic sex scenes and it was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival. Shinobu Terajima received the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin Film Festival for her portrayal of Kurokawas wife, the film is set in the late 1930s, during the Second Sino-Japanese War. In the first scene, Lieutenant Kurokawa scourges, rapes and disembowels Chinese people during the war, later, he returns home as a war hero, but with a horribly mutilated body. He is alive but reduced to a torso, deaf and mute, with covering half of his face. Despite his condition, he is still eager for sex. The sexual acts are rough and are imposed on his wife, who is repelled by him, the film concludes with the disabled veteran Kurokawa committing suicide by dragging himself into a pond outside his home. The film is the response to and criticism of Yukio Mishimas short film Patriotism. Caterpillar criticizes Japanese militarism, satirically deploys Japanese propaganda, and significantly politicizes and humanizes Edogawa Rampos 1929 banned short-story, the film demystifies the glorification of war, which is used to hide wars grim reality. It also depicts the unfair demands placed on Japanese women, during war, the film received a 91% rating on film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. It grossed $4,157 at the box office and $247,765 at the foreign box office for a combined Worldwide total of $251,922. It was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival, shinobu Terajima received the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin Film Festival for her portrayal of Kurokawas wife. Kabuki
–
Kabuki is a classical Japanese dance-drama. Kabuki theatre is known for the stylization of its drama and for the elaborate make-up worn by some of its performers, the individual kanji, from left to right, mean sing, dance, and skill. Kabuki is therefore sometimes translated as the art of singing and dancing and these are, however, ateji characters which do not reflect actual etymology. The kanji of skill generally refers to a performer in kabuki theatre, since the word kabuki is believed to derive from the verb kabuku, meaning to lean or to be out of the ordinary, kabuki can be interpreted as avant-garde or bizarre theatre. The expression kabukimono referred originally to those who were dressed and swaggered on a street. The history of kabuki began in 1603 when Izumo no Okuni, possibly a miko of Izumo-taisha and it originated in the 17th century. Japan was under the control of the Tokugawa shogunate, enforced by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the name of the Edo period derives from the relocation of the Tokugawa regime from its former home in Kyoto to the city of Edo, present-day Tokyo. Female performers played both men and women in comic playlets about ordinary life, the style was immediately popular, and Okuni was asked to perform before the Imperial Court. In the wake of success, rival troupes quickly formed. For this reason, kabuki was also called 遊女歌舞妓 during this period, Kabuki became a common form of entertainment in the ukiyo, or Yoshiwara, the registered red-light district in Edo. A diverse crowd gathered under one roof, something that happened nowhere else in the city, Kabuki theaters were a place to see and be seen as they featured the latest fashion trends and current events. The stage provided good entertainment with exciting new music, patterns, clothing, performances went from morning until sunset. The teahouses surrounding or connected to the theater provided meals, refreshments, the area around the theatres was lush with shops selling kabuki souvenirs. Kabuki, in a sense, initiated pop culture in Japan, the shogunate was never partial to kabuki and all the mischief it brought, particularly the variety of the social classes which mixed at kabuki performances. Women’s kabuki, called onna-kabuki, was banned in 1629 for being too erotic, following onna-kabuki, young boys performed in wakashū-kabuki, but since they too were eligible for prostitution, the shogun government soon banned wakashū-kabuki as well. Kabuki switched to male actors, called yaro-kabuki, in the mid-1600s. Male actors played both female and male characters, the theatre remained popular, and remained a focus of urban lifestyle until modern times. Happy Flight

Happy Flight is a Japanese comedy film directed by Shinobu Yaguchi about pilots and flight attendants. All Nippon Airways backed the creation of the film, the airline sponsored a giveaway of Happy Flight DVDs and other items to certain members of ANAs mileage club. Suzuki feels stressed when Captain Noriyoshi Harada becomes his evaluator, while Saitō becomes stressed when she learns she is working under Chief Purser Reiko Yamazaki, the story also tells the story of Natsumi Kimura, a ground staffer who deals with issues regarding the flight. The plot revolves around the logistics of preparing Flight 1980 for a timely departure, the aircraft serving has been reported with malfunctioning heated pitot tubes, but the captain decides to postpone the repair to avoid delays, relying on redundant instruments available. Bird patrol has been dispatched to fend off pigeons, immediately after takeoff, an instrument alarm prompts the captain in command to switch to the backup pitot tube as their primary indication. The captain mistakenly transmits the cabin announcement to the air traffic channel, inflight services commence shortly after the seat belt sign has been turned off. The stewardess follows through with her first mishap, describing the beef as plain and she then fumbles orders for white wine, apple juice, and motion sickness drugs. She corrects the drink orders, but the ill passenger vomits onto her uniform, up in the cockpit, the checking copilot responds to passenger worries by visually checking the wings over a bird-strike related incident. Meanwhile, the plane behaves erratically under the captains solo command, the aircraft has lost all indication of air speed until they descend to below 22,000 feet, where air temperature is above freezing point. With the aircraft unable to complete the journey, the captain elects to return to Haneda airport, haruka Ayase Tomoko Tabata Seiichi Tanabe Shinobu Terajima Saburo Tokito Kazue Fukiishi Ittoku Kishibe Mark Schilling of The Japan Times reviewed the film, giving it three of five stars. Quill is a 2004 Japanese film about a guide dog, first released in Japan on 13 March 2004 and on DVD on 25 September 2004. It was also shown at the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival in Canada on 17 September 2004, the film is directed by Yōichi Sai and adapted from the original novel The Life of Quill, the Seeing-Eye Dog by Ryohei Akimoto and Kengo Ishiguro, based on a true story. Prior to the release of film, NHK produced a TV drama adaptation of the novel. One day in Tokyo, a yellow Labrador Retriever puppy is born among a litter of five and this puppy is unique, wherein he has a bird-shaped mark on his left side. Following a simple communication test, he is selected to become a guide dog, hence his first parting. After being picked up by dog trainer Satoru Tawada, the puppy is flown to Kyoto to live with Isamu and Mitsuko Nii - a married couple who are puppy walkers, there, the couple name him Quill, after discovering the word in an English-Japanese dictionary. As soon as Quill reaches the age of one, he is handed back to Tawada to undergo guide dog training, this becomes his second parting. At first, Quill has difficulty learning the skills, but one day, while tending to another dog. During training, Quill is introduced to Mitsuru Watanabe, a blind journalist who has relied on a cane since losing his eyesight. Watanabe, at first, is skeptical about using a guide dog, Watanabe then undergoes training to work with Quill, most of the training involves learning English-language commands, so as to not confuse Quill when other people around him are talking in Japanese. He fails the final examination after not listening to Quills warnings on obstacles, Quill moves in with Watanabes family and works with his master for two years. Then one day, Watanabe is confined to the hospital when his diabetes takes its turn for the worse, Quill is returned to the training center, where he works as a demonstration dog for two years before finally reuniting with Watanabe. Their walk, however, is their one, as Watanabe dies a few days later. Quills third parting occurs after visiting Watanabes funeral, Quill no longer works as a guide dog, instead, he becomes the centers demonstration dog for seven years before he is reunited with the Nii family. He lives a happy and peaceful life for a year, but one day, while playing at the backyard, he falls off a step and breaks several bones. As they look over a dying Quill throughout the night, the couple thank him, Quill passes away at the age of 12 years,25 days. Chibichibiku played the puppy Quill, Beat was three-month-old Quill and Yuma portrayed an elderly Quill, the films soundtrack, composed and recorded by the Kuricorder Quartet, consists of simple recorders mixed with acoustic instruments. Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles

Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles is a 2005 drama film directed by Zhang Yimou and starring Ken Takakura. It premiered at the Tokyo International Film Festival on 22 October 2005 and was released in China on 22 December 2005. Written by Zou Jingzhi, the tells the story of Gouichi Takata. The father hopes that by doing so, he might gain the forgiveness of his son. The title of the film is an allusion to the story of Guan Yus perilous solo journey to reunite with his sworn brother and lord Liu Bei. It is a story about love and loyalty much told in Chinese folklore. The film draws the parallel between the tale and Takatas quest to fulfill his sons wish. Takata Gouichi, an elderly Japanese man, has been on terms with his son Kenichi since the death of his wife. When his son falls ill, Gouichi travels from the province of Akita to the hospital, located in Tokyo, Gouichi decides to travel to the PRC in his sons place to film Lis performance. Gouichi arrives in the Village of Li, near the City of Lijiang and his translator Jiang Wen and the local guide Qiu Lin suggest that he film someone else, but Gouichi insists on Li. After an uncertain and time-consuming process of obtaining clearances from authorities, Gouichi gains entry to the prison facility, Gouichi decides to travel to Stone Village to retrieve Lis 8 year old son Yang Yang. While in the village, Gouichi receives a call from Rie, telling him that Kenichi has been touched by his efforts, Gouichi wonders whether the message really was from Kenichi, and opts to continue his mission. On the way to the prison, the vehicle breaks down, Gouichi chases after the boy, and the two become lost in the lime-stone hills, having no choice but to sleep in a cave. Yang Yang is hostile toward Gouichi at first, but trusts him as the pass by. They are found the next morning by the efforts of villagers. Gouichi feels that Yang Yangs opinion should be respected, and lets him go home, shortly after, he receives another call from Rie, informing him that Kenichi has died, leaving behind a letter saying that he has forgiven his father. Yamato is a 2005 Japanese war film. It was directed by Junya Satō and is based on a book by Jun Henmi. With a framing story set in the present day, by flashbacks it tells the story of the crew of the World War II Japanese battleship Yamato, concentrating on the ships demise during Operation Ten-Go. The film begins with footage from Asahi Shimbuns special expedition to the Yamato wreckage in 1999, then to a woman, Makiko Uchida, visiting the Yamato Museum in Kure, Hiroshima on 6 April 2005. She is looking for a boat to take her to the site where the Yamato sank, in October 1944, the Yamato sails as part of a large Japanese fleet to engage American forces at the Battle of Leyte Gulf. During the battle, the Yamato sustains several hits, killing or injuring several crew, Yamato and the surviving ships return to Japan for repairs, while Uchida is sent to a hospital to recover. In March 1945, the crew hear rumors of a mission against the expected invasion of Okinawa and are given a few days of shore leave. During this time, Kamio returns home and learns that his mother died protecting his girlfriend, Taeko Nozaki, Taeko confesses her love for Kamio when he explains that he must go to Okinawa and gives him a special amulet for protection. Uchida uses the shore leave to escape the hospital and rejoin the crew and it will almost certainly be a suicide mission - and with no air cover, the entire Japanese force will be extremely vulnerable to Allied attacks, making it unlikely that they will even reach Okinawa. On the morning of April 7, the Yamato and its escorts assume battle stations after Task Force 58 detects it on the way to Okinawa, the crew opens fire with their anti-aircraft weapons as the planes appear. However, the number of US aircraft overwhelm the defenses. Kamio, Uchida, and Moriwaki continue to man a portside AA battery after strafing runs and bomb strikes kill much of the crew, including Karaki. After being told the ship is crippled and sinking, Admiral Itō and Captain Kōsaku Aruga give the order to abandon ship, Uchida and Moriwaki throw Kamio overboard despite his wish to stay with them to the end. The radioman attempts to call for support but water starts flooding the ship, the Yamatos remaining escorts start rescuing the survivors, but Kamio fails to save his friend Tetsuya Nishi despite promising his mother that he would look after him. Moriwaki ties Kamio to be hoisted aboard a vessel and swims away to drown himself. The film flashes forward to the present day, the old Kamio has a heart attack and he also discusses what happened to him during the final months of the war. He recounts that after the sinking, he went and told Nishis mother that her son had died a heros death, however, she was able to see him before she died and suggested Asukamaru as the name for his boat. They arrive at the coordinates the following day, where they hold a small ceremony

The Berlin International Film Festival, also called the Berlinale, is one of the worlds leading film festivals and most reputable media events. It is held annually in Berlin, Germany, founded in West Berlin in 1951, the festival has been celebrated annually in February since 1978. With around 300,000 tickets sold and 500,000 admissions it is considered the largest publicly attended film festival based on actual attendance rates. Up to 400 films are shown in sections, representing a comprehensive array of the cinematic world. Around twenty films compete for the called the Golden and Silver Bears. Since 2001 the director of the festival has been Dieter Kosslick, the European Film Market, a film trade fair held simultaneously to the Berlinale, is a major industry meeting for the international film circuit. The trade fair serves distributors, film buyers, producers, financiers, the Berlinale Talent Campus, a week-long series of lectures and workshops, gathers young filmmakers from around the globe. Actors, crew, and industry executives can post their own resume and this fee enrolls them in a membership called IMDbPro. PRO can be accessed by anyone willing to pay the fee, which is $19.99 USD per month, or if paid annually, $149.99, which comes to approximately $12.50 per month USD. Membership enables a user to access the rank order of each industry personality, as well as agent contact information for any actor, producer, director etc. that has an IMDb page. Enrolling in PRO for industry personnel, enables those members the ability to upload a head shot to open their page, as well as the ability to upload hundreds of photos to accompany their page. Yvonne Mitchell was an English stage, television and film actress. After beginning her career in theatre, Mitchell progressed to films in the late 1940s. Her roles include Julia in the 1954 BBC adaptation of George Orwells novel Nineteen Eighty-Four and she retired from acting in 1977. Mitchell was born Yvonne Frances Joseph, but in 1946 changed her name by deed poll to Yvonne Mitchell and her parents were Madge and Bertie Joseph. Mitchell was married to the journalist, film and theatre critic, Mitchell died of cancer, aged 63, in 1979. Monsey died the year, roughly one month earlier. Their daughter Cordelia Monsey is a director and a long-term associate of both Sir Peter Hall and Sir Trevor Nunn. Yvonne Mitchells grandson is the drummer and violinist, Mitch McGugan, outside acting, Mitchell was also an established author, writing several books for children and adults as well as winning awards for playwriting. Anna Magnani was an Italian stage and film actress. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress, along with four international awards. Born in Rome, she worked her way through Romes Academy of Dramatic Art by singing at night clubs, during her career, her only child was stricken by polio when he was 18 months old and remained crippled. She was referred to as La Lupa, the perennial toast of Rome, time magazine described her personality as fiery, and drama critic Harold Clurman said her acting was volcanic. In the realm of Italian cinema she was passionate, fearless, and exciting, director Roberto Rossellini called her the greatest acting genius since Eleonora Duse. Playwright Tennessee Williams became an admirer of her acting and wrote The Rose Tattoo specifically for her to star in, a role for which she received an Oscar in 1955. As an actress she became recognized for her dynamic and forceful portrayals of earthy lower-class women in films as LAmore, Bellissima, The Rose Tattoo, The Fugitive Kind. As early as 1950 Life magazine had stated that Magnani was one of the most impressive actresses since Garbo. Magnanis parentage and birthplace are uncertain, some sources suggest she was born in Rome, others in Egypt. Magnani herself stated that her mother was married in Egypt but returned to Rome before giving birth to her at Porta Pia and she was enrolled in a French convent school in Rome where she learned to speak French and play the piano. She also developed a passion for acting from watching the stage their Christmas plays. This period of formal education lasted until the age of fourteen and she was a plain, frail child with a forlornness of spirit. Her grandparents compensated by pampering her with food and clothes, yet while growing up, she is said to have felt more at ease around more earthly companions, often befriending the toughest kid on the block. This trait carried over into her life when she proclaimed. Give me the life of the streets, of common people, at age 17, she went on to study at the Eleonora Duse Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in Rome for two years. To support herself, Magnani sang in nightclubs and cabarets, leading to her being dubbed the Italian Édith Piaf, however, an actor friend Micky Knox, writes that she never studied acting formally and started her career in Italian music halls singing traditional Roman Folk songs. Shirley MacLaine is an American film, television and theater actress, singer, dancer, activist and author. She is known for her New Age beliefs, and has an interest in spirituality and she has written a series of autobiographical works that describe these beliefs, document her world travels, and describe her Hollywood career. She has also won five competitive Golden Globe Awards and received the Golden Globe Cecil B, deMille Award at the 1998 ceremony. Named after Shirley Temple, Shirley MacLean Beaty was born in Richmond, MacLaines younger brother is the actor, writer and director Warren Beatty, he changed the spelling of his surname when he became an actor. Their parents raised them as Baptists and her uncle was A. A. MacLeod, a Communist member of the Ontario legislature in the 1940s. MacLaine played baseball in a team, holding the record for most home runs which earned her the nickname Powerhouse. During the 1950s, the family resided in the Dominion Hills section of Arlington. As a toddler she had weak ankles and would fall over with the slightest misstep and this was the beginning of her interest in performing. Strongly motivated by ballet, she never missed a class, in classical romantic pieces like Romeo and Juliet and The Sleeping Beauty, she always played the boys roles due to being the tallest in the group and the absence of males in the class. Ultimately she decided against making a career of professional ballet because she had grown too tall and was unable to acquire perfect technique and she explained that she didnt have the ideal body type, lacking the requisite beautifully constructed feet of high arches, high insteps and a flexible ankle. Also slowly realizing ballets propensity to be too all-consuming, and ultimately limiting, she moved on to forms of dancing, acting. She attended Washington-Lee High School, where she was on the cheerleading squad, the summer before her senior year, she went to New York City to try acting on Broadway, and had some success. After she graduated, she returned and within a year became an understudy to actress Carol Haney in The Pajama Game, Haney broke her ankle, a few months after, with Haney still injured, film producer Hal B. Wallis saw MacLaines performance, and signed her to work for Paramount Pictures and she later sued Wallis over a contractual dispute, a suit that has been credited with ending the old-style studio star system of actor management. MacLaine made her debut in Alfred Hitchcocks The Trouble with Harry. This was quickly followed by her role in the Martin and Lewis film Artists, soon afterwards, she had a role in Around the World in 80 Days. Anna Karina is a Danish-French film actress, director and screenwriter who has spent most of her working life in France. She is known as a muse of the director Jean-Luc Godard and her notable collaborations with Godard include The Little Soldier, A Woman Is a Woman, Vivre sa vie, and Alphaville. With A Woman Is a Woman, Karina won the Best Actress award at the Berlin Film Festival, karinas mother was a dress shop owner and her father was a ships captain who left the family a year after she was born. She lived with her grandparents for three years, until she was four. She spent the four years in foster care when she returned to live with her mother. She has described her childhood as terribly wanting to be loved and she began her career in Denmark, where she sang in cabarets and worked as a model playing in commercials. At age 14, she appeared in a Danish short film by Ib Schmedes and she studied dance and painting in Denmark and for a while made a living selling her paintings. In 1958, after a row with her mother, she hitchhiked to Paris, Karina was 17 when she arrived in Paris—poor and unable to speak French. Living on the streets, she got a break while sitting at the cafe Les Deux Magots and she was approached by a woman from an advertisement agency who asked her to do some photos. She became a fashion model, meeting Pierre Cardin and Coco Chanel. Chanel helped her devise her professional name, Anna Karina, Karina performed, uncredited, in a 1959 soap advertisement that was included near the end of Guy Debords On the Passage of a Few Persons Through a Rather Brief Unity of Time. The image was accompanied by Debords voice-over, The advertisements during intermissions are the truest reflection of an intermission from life, Jean-Luc Godard, then a film critic for Cahiers du cinéma, first saw Karina in a series of Palmolive ads in a bathtub covered in soapsuds. He was casting his debut film, Breathless. He offered her a part in the film, but she refused when he mentioned that there would be a nude scene. Rita Gam was an American film and television actress and documentary filmmaker. She was nominated for a Golden Globe and won the Silver Bear for Best Actress. Gam was born Rita Eleanore MacKay in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Belle, who was born in Romania, and Milton A. MacKay, who was born in Alsace-Lorraine, to parents from Romania. Her father died in 1931, and her mother remarried, and Rita took the surname of her stepfather, Benjamin J. Gam. Gam was a model before she ventured into acting and her acting career began on Broadway and in television, after which she moved on to films. Her Broadway credits included Theres a Girl in My Soup, The Insect Comedy, A Flag is Born and she appeared first in the 1952 film noir The Thief, which starred Ray Milland. In October 1952, she signed a long-term MGM contract, another notable role was Herodias in 1961s King of Kings. She shared the Silver Bear for Best Actress award with Viveca Lindfors at the 1962 Berlin Film Festival, in 1963, Gam was a leading member of The Minnesota Theatre Company in the opening season of The Tyrone Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. Gam appeared in a few more American films before working in Europe and she returned to the U. S. to appear in small parts in films, including Klute in 1971, before taking up documentary film making. In 2003, she appeared in the rotating cast of the Off-Broadway stage reading of Wit & Wisdom, in 2004, she appeared in one of a series of ads for the Royal Bank of Scotland. Gams first husband was director Sidney Lumet, whom she married in 1949, the marriage ended in divorce in 1955, and Lumet married socialite Gloria Vanderbilt. In 1956 she married publisher Thomas Guinzburg and this marriage also ended in divorce in 1963. She was a bridesmaid at the wedding of her friend, Grace Kelly. Elsa Viveca Torstensdotter Lindfors, better known under her professional name of Viveca Lindfors, was a Swedish stage and film actress. Lindfors was born in Uppsala, Sweden, the daughter of Karin Emilia Therese and she trained at the Royal Dramatic Theatre School, Stockholm. Soon after, she became a theater and film star in Sweden and she moved to the United States in 1946 after being signed by Warner Bros. and began working in Hollywood. She appeared in more than one hundred films including Night Unto Night, No Sad Songs for Me, Dark City, King of Kings, Creepshow, The Sure Thing, and Stargate. She appeared with such as Ronald Reagan, Jeffrey Hunter, Charlton Heston, Lizabeth Scott. In 1963 she appeared in the film An Affair of the Skin as the mistress of Kevin McCarthys character, Lindfors appeared in an television episode of the first season of Twelve OClock High. She also appeared on television, including the 1959 episode The Temple of the Swinging Doll of the NBC espionage drama Five Fingers, later, she had a recurring role on the ABC series Life Goes On, for which she won an Emmy Award. Lindfors appeared with Joseph Cotten and Ward Bond in the 1957 film The Halliday Brand, one of her last performances was in the original Stargate film in which she played the role of Catherine Langford. An original and mesmerizing stage presence, her roles ranged from Strindberg to Shakespeare to the musical Pal Joey, in 1962 she shared the Silver Bear for Best Actress award with Rita Gam at the Berlin Film Festival, for their performances in Tad Danielewskis No Exit. Among her later roles, perhaps the most memorable is the kindly. Madhur Jaffrey, CBE is an Indian-born actress, food and travel writer, and television personality. She has written over a dozen cookbooks and appeared on several related programs, the most notable of which was Madhur Jaffreys Indian Cookery. She is the food consultant at Dawat, considered by many critics to be among the best Indian restaurants in New York City. She has appeared in dramas on radio, stage and television and her childhood memoir of India during the final years of the British Raj, Climbing the Mango Trees, was published in 2006. Madhur Jaffrey was born Madhur Bahadur on 13 August 1933 in Civil Lines, Delhi and she is the fifth of six children of Lala Raj Bans Bahadur and his wife, Kashmiran Rani. Madhurs grandfather, Rai Bahadur Raj Narain, had built a family compound, named Number 7 Raj Narain Marg. When Madhur was about 2 years old, her father accepted a position in a concern, Ganesh Flour Mills. In Kanpur, Madhur attended St. Mary’s Convent school along with her sisters, Lalit. In kindergarten at the age of 5, she played the role of the mouse in a musical version of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. The family lived in Kanpur for 8 years until her grandfathers deteriorating health caused a back to Delhi in 1944. In Delhi, Madhur attended Queen Marys Higher Secondary School where her teacher, Mrs McKelvie. Madhur played the role of Titania in William Shakespeares play A Midsummer Nights Dream followed by the role in Robin Hood. Madhurs brothers, Brij Bans Bahadur and Krishen Bans Bahadur, who were older than her, were enrolled in St. Stephens College. Every winter, St. Stephens students put on a Shakespearean play that Madhur would watch avidly from the front row, in 1947, Madhur experienced first-hand the effects of the partition of the British Indian Empire. At school, her classmates split into two on the issue of partition, the Muslim girls supported the idea while the Hindus were against it. On August 15 she watched the transfer of power at India Gate and got a glimpse of Jawaharlal Nehru. The massive multi-directional migration that began almost immediately afterwards caused riots, the male members of her family guarded their house with guns that they had previously used only for hunting game. Lola Albright
–
Lola Jean Albright was an American singer and actress. She is best known for playing the sultry singer Edie Hart, Albright was born in Akron, Ohio, to John Paul and Marion Albright, both of whom were gospel music singers. The family lived at 552 Fairfield Avenue in Akron and she attended King Grammar School and West High School. Albright sang in public from an age and studied piano for 20 years. Beginning when she was 15 years old she worked after school as a receptionist at radio station WAKR in Akron, at the age of 18 she left WAKR and moved to Cleveland, taking a job as a stenographer at WTAM radio. Her first radio performance came on WJW in Cleveland and she first gained notice in the film noir Champion, as the wife of a manipulating boxing manager, who falls for a prizefighter played by Kirk Douglas. For the next years, she appeared in secondary roles in over 20 films. Among them was a role in the slapstick comedy The Good Humor Man in 1950 opposite future husband Jack Carson. In the early 1950s she was a frequent model for pinup painter Gil Elvgren, critic Pauline Kael offered high praise for Albrights performance. In 1985, The New York Times also lauded Albrights acting in the film and she portrayed cocktail waitress in Lord Love a Duck who turns suicidal when she thinks she has ruined her daughter Tuesday Welds life. The next year she was in the Western epic The Way West. She gave up her career in 1968, after the generation-gap farce The Impossible Years in which she was the despairing wife of a husband. Medical Center, Kojak, Columbo, McMillan & Wife, Quincy, M. E. Starsky & Hutch, in 1958, she was cast in Peter Gunn, the television detective series produced by Blake Edwards and scored by Henry Mancini. Albright played sultry Edie Hart, a singer and the romantic interest of Peter Gunn. She was perfect casting for that role because she had a kind of jazz delivery that was very hard to find. Just enough to believe that she’d be singing in that club, Albright sang in 38 episodes, covering jazz evergreens such as How High the Moon. A Good Man Is Hard to Find, How High the Moon, Easy Street, Day In, in 1964, she appeared again with Stevens on his short-lived CBS drama Mr. Broadway. Dame Edith Mary Evans, DBE was an English actress. She was best known for her work on the stage, but also appeared in films at the beginning, between 1964 and 1968, she was nominated for three Academy Awards. She created roles in two of Shaws plays, Orinthia in The Apple Cart, and Epifania in The Millionairess and was in the British premières of two others, Heartbreak House and Back to Methuselah. Evans was born in Pimlico, London, the daughter of Edward Evans, a civil servant in the General Post Office. She had one sibling, a brother who died at the age of four and she was educated at St Michaels Church of England School, Pimlico, before being apprenticed at the age of 15 in 1903 as a milliner. She commented in later years that she loved the rich and beautiful materials of the craft, poel then cast her as Cressida in Troilus and Cressida in London and subsequently at Stratford-upon-Avon. The critic of The Manchester Guardian found her diction inadequate, but otherwise approved, Miss Edith Evans, Evanss West End debut was in George Moores Elizabeth Cooper in 1913. The play received poor notices, but Evans was praised, In the very part of a maid Miss Edith Evans made the success of the afternoon. She put more into her few minutes than most of our approved stars can suggest in leading parts, in January 1914 she made her professional Shakespearian debut as Gertrude in Hamlet. In 1914, at Moores instigation, Evans was given a contract by the Royalty Theatre in Soho. She played character roles in comedies, as a member of casts that included Gladys Cooper. Over the next ten years she polished her craft in a range of parts. She played in a silent film called A Welsh Singer, directed by, for the same director she acted in East is East in 1917, but thereafter made no more films for over thirty years. In 1922 she made what J T Grein in The Illustrated London News called a triumph in Alfred Sutros comedy The Laughing Lady. Nigel Playfair cast her as the strong-willed and witty heroine in his revival of Congreves Restoration comedy at the Lyric Hammersmith, the critics resorted to superlatives, he main pleasure of the evening is due to Miss Edith Evanss Millamant, a part in which she definitely arrives. This actress imposes herself upon the audience first of all by her Rubens-like vitality and we have always known that she can fill the stage. It was delicious to hear her demand to be sole empress of her tea-table, James Agate wrote, Let me not mince matters. Miss Edith Evans is the most accomplished of living and practising English actresses, arnold Bennett noted in his journals that this Millamant was the finest comedy performance he had ever seen

Simone Signoret was a French cinema actress often hailed as one of Frances greatest film stars. She became the first French person to win an Academy Award, in her lifetime she also received two Césars, three BAFTAs, an Emmy, a Cannes Film Festival Award, the Silver Bear for Best Actress awards, a NBR Award and a Golden Globe nomination. Signoret was born Simone Henriette Charlotte Kaminker in Wiesbaden, Germany, to André and Georgette Kaminker and her mother, Georgette, from whom she acquired her stage name, was a French Catholic. Signoret grew up in Paris in an atmosphere and studied English, German. During the German occupation of France, Signoret mixed with an group of writers and actors who met at a café in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés quarter. By this time, she had developed an interest in acting and was encouraged by her friends, including her lover, Daniel Gélin and she took her mothers maiden name for the screen to help hide her Jewish roots. Signorets sensual features and earthy nature led to type-casting and she was seen in roles as a prostitute. She won considerable attention in La Ronde, a film which was banned briefly in New York as immoral and she won further acclaim, including an acting award from the British Film Academy, for her portrayal of another prostitute in Jacques Beckers Casque dor. She appeared in notable films in France during the 1950s, including Thérèse Raquin, directed by Marcel Carné, Les Diaboliques. In 1958, Signoret acted in the English independent film, Room at the Top, which won her numerous awards including the Best Female Performance Prize at Cannes and the Academy Award for Best Actress. She was the only French cinema actress to receive an Oscar until Juliette Binoche in 1997 and Marion Cotillard in 2008, and she was offered films in Hollywood, but turned them down, continuing to work in France and England—notably opposite Laurence Olivier in Term of Trial —until 1965. In 1962, Signoret translated Lillian Hellmans play The Little Foxes into French for a production in Paris that ran for six months at the Theatre Sarah-Bernhardt and she played the Regina role as well. Hellman was displeased with the production, although the translation was approved by scholars selected by Hellman, Signorets memoirs, Nostalgia Isnt What It Used To Be, were published in 1978. She also wrote a novel, Adieu Volodya, published in 1985, Signoret first married filmmaker Yves Allégret, with whom she had a daughter Catherine Allégret, herself an actress. Her second marriage was to the Italian-born French actor Yves Montand in 1951, Signoret died of pancreatic cancer in Autheuil-Authouillet, France, aged 64. She was buried in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris and Yves Montand was later buried next to her, the play charted the deteriorating relationship between Signoret and Marilyn Monroe during the filming of Lets Make Love. Unable to achieve the recognition of Oscar-winning Signoret, Monroe begins an affair with Signorets husband, singer Nina Simone took her last name from Simone Signoret

Dame Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor, DBE was a British-American actress, businesswoman, and humanitarian. She began as an actress in the early 1940s, and was one of the most popular stars of classical Hollywood cinema in the 1950s. She continued her career successfully into the 1960s, and remained a well known figure for the rest of her life. The American Film Institute named her the seventh-greatest female screen legend in 1999, Born in London to wealthy, socially prominent American parents, Taylor moved with her family to Los Angeles in 1939, and she soon was given a film contract by Universal Pictures. Her screen debut was in a role in Theres One Born Every Minute. Taylor was then signed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and had her breakthrough role in National Velvet, becoming one of the studios most popular teenaged stars. She made the transition to adult roles in the early 1950s, despite being one of MGMs most bankable stars, Taylor wished to end her career in the early 1950s, as she resented the studios control and disliked many of the films to which she was assigned. She began receiving roles in the mid-1950s, beginning with the epic drama Giant. These included two film adaptations of plays by Tennessee Williams, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Suddenly, Last Summer, although she disliked her role in BUtterfield 8, her last film for MGM, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance. She was next paid a record-breaking $1 million to play the role in the historical epic Cleopatra. During the filming, Taylor and co-star Richard Burton began having an affair which caused a scandal. Despite public disapproval, Burton and she continued their relationship and were married the first time in 1964. Dubbed Liz and Dick by the media, they starred in 11 films together, including The V. I. P. s, The Sandpiper, The Taming of the Shrew, and Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf. Taylor received the best reviews of her career for Woolf, winning her second Academy Award, in the 1980s, she acted in her first substantial stage roles and in several television films and series, and became the first celebrity to launch a perfume brand. Taylor was also one of the first celebrities to take part in HIV/AIDS activism and she co-founded the American Foundation for AIDS Research in 1985 and the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation in 1991. From the early 1990s until her death, she dedicated her time to philanthropy and she received several accolades for it, including the Presidential Citizens Medal. Taylors personal life was subject to constant media attention throughout her life and she was married eight times to seven men, endured serious illnesses, and led a jet set lifestyle, including amassing one of the most expensive private collections of jewelry. After many years of ill health, Taylor died from heart failure at the age of 79 in 2011

Kinuyo Tanaka
–
Kinuyo Tanaka was a Japanese actress and director. She had a career lasting over 50 years with more than 250 credited films and she was also a second cousin to director Masaki Kobayashi. Tanaka was born in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi, Japan and her first credited film appearance was in 1924 in “A Maid of the Genroku Era” in 1924, which also marked the start of her affiliation with the Shochiku Studios. She married director Hiroshi Shimizu in 1929 after appearing in a number of his films in the 1920s, although they divorced after less than a year, she later played in a number of films directed by her ex-husband. She became an actress at an early age, appearing in Yasujirō Ozus I Graduated. The following year she played the lead in Aiyoku no ki, in the 1930s, she became so popular that the titles of her films used her name, as in The Kinuyo Story in 1930, Doctor Kinuyo in 1937 and Kinuyo’s First Love in 1940. In 1938, she starred in Hiromasa Nomura’s Flower in Storm with Ken Uehara, in 1940, she worked for the first time with Kenji Mizoguchi, starring in A Woman of Osaka, which has not survived. It marked the start of her transition to more challenging roles and she worked on several movies with Mikio Naruse, Yasujirō Ozu, and also Keisuke Kinoshita. She had a working relationship with director Kenji Mizoguchi, having parts in 15 of his films, including leading roles in The Life of Oharu, Ugetsu. Their working relationship ended when Mizoguchi countered a recommendation from the Directors Guild of Japan for the Nikkatsu studio to hire her as a director. Despite this, the production of her film as director went ahead, but Tanaka never forgave Mizoguchi. Tanaka was the second Japanese woman who worked as a film director and her first directing job was on the film Love Letter in 1953, scripted by Kinoshita, was entered as a contestant in the Cannes Film Festival in 1954. She directed five films between 1953 and 1962. The Moon Has Risen in 1955 was scripted by Yasujirō Ozu, however, as well as directing, Tanaka continued with her acting career, appearing as Yasumotos mother in Akira Kurosawas Red Beard. For her performance as a prostitute in Kei Kumais Sandakan N°8 she won the Best Actress Award at the 25th Berlin International Film Festival in 1975. During the 1960s, she moved increasingly towards television, Tanaka died of a brain tumor on 21 March 1977. Mary Jean Lily Tomlin is an American actress, comedian, writer, singer, and producer. Tomlin began her career as a comedian, and performing Off-Broadway during the 1960s. Her breakout role was performing as a cast member on the variety show Rowan & Martins Laugh-In from 1969 until 1973 and she currently stars on the Netflix series Grace and Frankie as Frankie Bergstein. Her performance as Frankie garnered her nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2015 and 2016. Her other notable films include 9 to 5, All of Me, Flirting with Disaster, Tea with Mussolini, I Heart Huckabees and she is also known as the voice of Ms. Frizzle on the childrens series The Magic School Bus. She is a 1957 graduate of Cass Technical High School, Tomlin attended Wayne State University and originally studied Biology. She auditioned for a play, and it sparked her interest in a career in the theatre, after college, Tomlin began doing stand-up comedy in nightclubs in Detroit and later in New York City. She continued studying acting at the HB Studio and her first television appearance was on The Merv Griffin Show in 1965. In 1969, after a stint as a hostess on the ABC series Music Scene, Tomlin joined NBCs sketch comedy show Rowan and Martins Laugh-In. Ernestine often snorted when she let loose a barbed response or heard something salacious, she wore her hair in a 1940s hairstyle with a hairnet. Her opening lines were often the comical one ringy dingy, two ringy dingy, and, is this the party to whom I am speaking. In the sketches, Ernestine was usually at her switchboard taking calls and she occasionally called her boyfriend, Vito, a telephone repair man, or her pal Phoenicia, another operator. Virginia Cathryn Gena Rowlands is an American film, stage, and television actress, whose career in the entertainment industry has spanned over six decades. She also won the Silver Bear for Best Actress for Opening Night, in November 2015, Rowlands received an Honorary Academy Award in recognition of her unique screen performances. Rowlands was born as Virginia Cathryn Rowlands in Madison, Wisconsin and her mother, Mary Allen, was a housewife who later worked as an actress under the stage name Lady Rowlands. Her father, Edwin Myrwyn Rowlands, was a banker and state legislator and he was a member of the Wisconsin Progressive Party, and was of Welsh descent. She had a brother, David Rowlands and her family moved to Washington, D. C. From 1947–50, she attended the University of Wisconsin, where she was a popular student already renowned for her beauty and she left for New York City to study drama at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. In the early 1950s, Rowlands performed with theatre companies. She made her Broadway debut in The Seven Year Itch and toured in a production of the play. In 1956, she starred in Middle of the Night opposite Edward G. Robinson and she appeared alongside husband Cassavetes on an episode of the 1959–60 NBC detective series Johnny Staccato. She also appeared on an episode of the NBC western series, Riverboat, starring Darren McGavin, Rowlands made her film debut in The High Cost of Loving in 1958. In 1961–62, she starred as Teddy Carella, the wife of Robert Lansing. In that same season, she appeared on ABCs Target, The Corruptors and she also guest starred in CBSs The Lloyd Bridges Show and ABCs Breaking Point. In 1963, she guest-starred in an episode on the NBC western series, Bonanza and The Virginian, in 1967, she was cast as socialite Adrienne Van Leyden in the prime time ABC soap opera Peyton Place. According to Boston University film scholar Ray Carney, Rowlands sought to suppress an early version of Cassavetes first film, Shadows, Rowlands also became involved in the screenings of Husbands and Love Streams, according to Carney. At Rowlands request, UCLA created a print with almost ten minutes of content edited out. The alternative print is the one that has been made available for rental. In 1985, Rowlands played the mother in the critically acclaimed made-for-TV movie An Early Frost and she won an Emmy for her portrayal of former First Lady of the United States Betty Ford in the 1987 made-for-TV movie The Betty Ford Story. Hanna Schygulla is a German actress and chanson singer. Long associated with the theater and film director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, for whom she first worked in 1965, Schygulla was born in Königshütte to German parents Antonie and Joseph Schygulla. Both the names Schygulla and Mzyk are of Polish/Silesian origin, indicating a mixed heritage and/or the process of teutonisation of Slavs as was common in Silesia in the 19th century. Her father, a merchant by profession, was drafted as an infantryman in the German Army and was captured by American forces in Italy, subsequently being held as a prisoner of war until 1948. In 1945 Schygulla and her mother arrived as refugees in Munich following the expulsion of the majority German-speaking population of Königshütte by Communist Poland, much later, in the 1960s, Schygulla studied Romance languages and German studies, while taking acting lessons in Munich during her spare time. Acting eventually became her focus, and she became known for her film work with Rainer Werner Fassbinder. During the making of Effi Briest, an adaptation of a German novel by Theodor Fontane, Fassbinder, another issue for Schygulla was low pay, and she led a revolt against Fassbinder during the making of Effi Briest, shot in September 1972 some time before its commercial release. His response was blunt, I cant stand the sight of your face any more. They did not work again for several years until The Marriage of Maria Braun in 1978. The film was entered into the 29th Berlin International Film Festival, in 1980 she acted in Fassbinders miniseries adaptation of Berlin Alexanderplatz. In 1981 Schygulla starred alongside Bruno Ganz in Volker Schlöndorffs Circle of Deceit, and she was a member of the jury at the 15th Moscow International Film Festival in 1987. In the 1990s she became a well-known chanson singer, in Juliane Lorenzs documentary film Life, Love and Celluloid, on Fassbinder and related topics, Schygulla performs several songs. Schygulla appeared in the 2000 Béla Tarr film Werckmeister Harmonies, and in 2002 in VB51, five years later, she appeared in the film The Edge of Heaven, directed by Fatih Akın, to wide acclaim. In 2007 she received the Honorary Award from the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival, in 2011 she acted in the Alexander Sokurov film Faust. Kidmans ancestry includes Irish, Scottish, and English heritage, being born in Hawaii, she was given the Hawaiian name Hōkūlani. The inspiration for the name came from a baby elephant born around the time at the Honolulu Zoo but the name is also a commonly used Hawaiian name for girls. At the time of Kidmans birth, her father was a student at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. He became a fellow at the National Institute of Mental Health of the United States. Opposed to the war in Vietnam, Kidmans parents participated in anti-war protests while living in Washington, the family returned to Australia when Kidman was four and her mother now lives on Sydneys North Shore. Kidman has a sister, Antonia Kidman, a journalist. Kidman attended Lane Cove Public School and North Sydney Girls High School and she was enrolled in ballet at three and showed her natural talent for acting in her primary and high school years. She says that she was first inspired to become an actress upon seeing Margaret Hamiltons performance as the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz. Kidman has revealed that she was timid as a child, saying, I am very shy – really shy – I even had a stutter as a kid, which I slowly got over, but I still regress into that shyness
