Paris is the capital and most populous city of France. It has an area of 105 square kilometres and a population of 2,229,621 in 2013 within its administrative limits, the agglomeration has grown well beyond the citys administrative limits. By the 17th century, Paris was one of Europes major centres of finance, commerce, fashion, science, and the arts, and it retains that position still today. The aire urbaine de Paris, a measure of area, spans most of the Île-de-France region and has a population of 12,405,426. It is the second busiest metro system in Europe after Moscow Metro, notably, Paris Gare du Nord is the busiest railway station in the world outside of Japan, with 262 millions passengers in 2015. In 2015, Paris received 22.2 million visitors, making it one of the top tourist destinations. The association football club Paris Saint-Germain and the rugby union club Stade Français are based in Paris, the 80, 000-seat Stade de France, built for the 1998 FIFA World Cup, is located just north of Paris in the neighbouring commune of Saint-Denis. Paris hosts the annual French Open Grand Slam tennis tournament on the red clay of Roland Garros, Paris hosted the 1900 and 1924 Summer Olympics and is bidding to host the 2024 Summer Olympics. The name Paris is derived from its inhabitants, the Celtic Parisii tribe. Thus, though written the same, the name is not related to the Paris of Greek mythology. In the 1860s, the boulevards and streets of Paris were illuminated by 56,000 gas lamps, since the late 19th century, Paris has also been known as Panam in French slang. Inhabitants are known in English as Parisians and in French as Parisiens and they are also pejoratively called Parigots. The Parisii, a sub-tribe of the Celtic Senones, inhabited the Paris area from around the middle of the 3rd century BC. Charlotte Lucy Gainsbourg is a British-French actress and singer. She is the daughter of English actress Jane Birkin and French singer and songwriter Serge Gainsbourg, after making her musical debut with her father on the song Lemon Incest at the age of 12, she released an album with her father at the age of 15. More than 20 years passed before she released three albums as an adult to commercial and critical success, Gainsbourg has also appeared in many films, including several directed by Lars von Trier, and has received both a César Award and the Cannes Film Festival Best Actress Award. Gainsbourg was born in London, to English actress and singer Jane Birkin and French actor, Gainsbourg was born at the height of her parents fame, they had made headlines several years earlier with the sexually explicit song Je taime. Moi non plus and by that point had become notorious for their turbulent relationship, as a result, her birth and childhood were well publicised. Her maternal grandmother was actress Judy Campbell, and her uncle is screenwriter Andrew Birkin and she is a cousin of theatre and opera director Sophie Hunter. Her father was Jewish, and her mother is from a Protestant background, Gainsbourg attended École Active Bilingue Jeannine Manuel in Paris and Collège Alpin International Beau Soleil in Switzerland. French is Gainsbourgs first language, but she is fluent in English. Gainsbourg was raised in Paris alongside her half-sister from her mothers marriage to composer John Barry, Kate Barry, according to Birkin, both parents were somewhat neglectful, often spending their nights going out to parties and drinking. She has a brother, Lucien Lulu Gainsbourg, born in 1986 from her fathers relationship with Bambou. On her fathers side she also had two siblings born from his second marriage to Françoise-Antoinette Béatrice Pancrazzi. By 1980, her parents relationship had dissolved and her left her father for the director Jacques Doillon. Her half sister Lou Doillon was born in 1982 as a result of the union, Gainsbourg would go on to work with her stepfather in the film The Temptation of Isabelle in 1985 and later in Amoureuse in 1992, which also starred her spouse Yvan Attal. In 1987 she was the target of a bungled kidnapping, after her parents separated, Gainsbourgs father descended into alcoholism, eventually dying of a heart attack in 1991. Gainsbourg remained devoted to preserving his legacy and preserved his home and she eventually abandoned the project and decided to maintain the house as a private residence instead. On 5 September 2007, Gainsbourg was rushed to a Paris hospital where she underwent surgery for a cerebral hemorrhage and she had been experiencing headaches since a waterskiing accident in the United States several weeks earlier. Gainsbourg grew up on film sets, as both of her parents were involved in the film industry, in 1986, Gainsbourg won a César Award for Most Promising Actress for Leffrontée. Tokyo, officially Tokyo Metropolis, is the capital of Japan and one of its 47 prefectures. The Greater Tokyo Area is the most populous area in the world. It is the seat of the Emperor of Japan and the Japanese government, Tokyo is in the Kantō region on the southeastern side of the main island Honshu and includes the Izu Islands and Ogasawara Islands. Formerly known as Edo, it has been the de facto seat of government since 1603 when Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu made the city his headquarters. It officially became the capital after Emperor Meiji moved his seat to the city from the old capital of Kyoto in 1868, Tokyo Metropolis was formed in 1943 from the merger of the former Tokyo Prefecture and the city of Tokyo. The Tokyo metropolitan government administers the 23 Special Wards of Tokyo, the metropolitan government also administers 39 municipalities in the western part of the prefecture and the two outlying island chains. The population of the wards is over 9 million people. The prefecture is part of the worlds most populous metropolitan area with upwards of 37.8 million people, the city hosts 51 of the Fortune Global 500 companies, the highest number of any city in the world. Tokyo ranked third in the International Financial Centres Development IndexEdit, the city is also home to various television networks such as Fuji TV, Tokyo MX, TV Tokyo, TV Asahi, Nippon Television, NHK and the Tokyo Broadcasting System. Tokyo ranked first in the Global Economic Power Index and fourth in the Global Cities Index. The city is considered a world city – as listed by the GaWCs 2008 inventory – and in 2014. In 2015, Tokyo was named the Most Liveable City in the world by the magazine Monocle, the Michelin Guide has awarded Tokyo by far the most Michelin stars of any city in the world. Tokyo ranked first in the world in the Safe Cities Index, the 2016 edition of QS Best Student Cities ranked Tokyo as the 3rd-best city in the world to be a university student. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies off the eastern coast of the Asia Mainland and stretches from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea, the kanji that make up Japans name mean sun origin. 日 can be read as ni and means sun while 本 can be read as hon, or pon, Japan is often referred to by the famous epithet Land of the Rising Sun in reference to its Japanese name. Japan is an archipelago consisting of about 6,852 islands. The four largest are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku, the country is divided into 47 prefectures in eight regions. Hokkaido being the northernmost prefecture and Okinawa being the southernmost one, the population of 127 million is the worlds tenth largest. Japanese people make up 98. 5% of Japans total population, approximately 9.1 million people live in the city of Tokyo, the capital of Japan. Archaeological research indicates that Japan was inhabited as early as the Upper Paleolithic period, the first written mention of Japan is in Chinese history texts from the 1st century AD. Influence from other regions, mainly China, followed by periods of isolation, from the 12th century until 1868, Japan was ruled by successive feudal military shoguns who ruled in the name of the Emperor. Japan entered into a period of isolation in the early 17th century. The Second Sino-Japanese War of 1937 expanded into part of World War II in 1941, which came to an end in 1945 following the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japan is a member of the UN, the OECD, the G7, the G8, the country has the worlds third-largest economy by nominal GDP and the worlds fourth-largest economy by purchasing power parity. It is also the worlds fourth-largest exporter and fourth-largest importer, although Japan has officially renounced its right to declare war, it maintains a modern military with the worlds eighth-largest military budget, used for self-defense and peacekeeping roles. Japan is a country with a very high standard of living. Its population enjoys the highest life expectancy and the third lowest infant mortality rate in the world, in ancient China, Japan was called Wo 倭. It was mentioned in the third century Chinese historical text Records of the Three Kingdoms in the section for the Wei kingdom, Wa became disliked because it has the connotation of the character 矮, meaning dwarf. The 倭 kanji has been replaced with the homophone Wa, meaning harmony, the Japanese word for Japan is 日本, which is pronounced Nippon or Nihon and literally means the origin of the sun. The earliest record of the name Nihon appears in the Chinese historical records of the Tang dynasty, at the start of the seventh century, a delegation from Japan introduced their country as Nihon

Tale of Tales (2015 film)

Tale of Tales is a 2015 European dark fantasy film, directed by Matteo Garrone, starring Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel, Toby Jones, and John C. Reilly. An Italian-led production with co-producers in France and the United Kingdom and it competed for the Palme dOr at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. The Baroque stories manage to mix real and surreal with many metaphorical usages, pentamerone was a 17th-century collection of Italian fairytales. The three tales are La Cerva Fatata, La Pulce, La Vecchia Scorticata, that have been adapted with elements of other tales by Giambattista Basile. All three stories are told in a way, pieced in fragments through the whole film until the end. The first tale begins in the kingdom of Longtrellis, where the King and Queen have tried everything to have a child, the King loves his Queen, but all she desires is a child. One night, a necromancer suggests a solution, if the Queen eats the heart of an aquatic dragon cooked by a virgin. However, this will come at the cost of a life, the Queen accepts, not caring about the price. The King sets off to slay the dragon, and dies doing so. The Queen does not mourn the loss of her husband, she cares for the dragons heart. After eating the heart, the bears a son, Elias. The servant who cooked the heart for the Queen, who became pregnant by inhaling the steam from the heart, also gives birth to a boy. The two boys are nearly identical and have hair as white as the dragon, as a young man, Eliass affections are not for the Queen, but for his friend Jonah, who he views as a brother. This greatly hurts the Queen, who attempts to murder Jonah herself, after finding the boys are so close. In response, Jonah leaves the kingdom, leaving his mother, Elias is heartbroken and tries to convince Jonah to stay, but Jonah says he must go. Jonah takes a knife and plunges it into the root of a tree, Jonah tells Elias that as long as the tree continues to spout clear water, he will know that Jonah is alive and well. One day, Elias comes to the tree to find the water clouded with blood and he immediately leaves to find Jonah. When Elias arrives in a distant village, Jonahs pregnant sweetheart, by claiming to have lost his memory, Elias discovers that Jonah has been missing since he went to the woods five days ago

Sir Ridley Scott is an English film director and producer. Scott is known for his atmospheric, highly concentrated visual style and his films are also known for their strong female characters. Scott has been nominated for three Academy Awards for Directing, in 1995, both Ridley and his brother Tony received the BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Contribution To Cinema. In 2003, Scott was knighted for his services to the British film industry, in a 2004 BBC poll Scott was named the tenth most influential person in British culture. In 2015 he received a doctorate from the Royal College of Art in London. Scott was born in South Shields, County Durham, North East England, to Elizabeth and he was brought up in an army family, so for most of his early life, his father – an officer in the Royal Engineers – was absent. His elder brother, Frank, joined the British Merchant Navy when he was still young, during this time the family moved around, living in Cumberland in North West England, Wales and Germany. He had a brother, Tony, who also became a film director. He studied at Grangefield Grammar School and West Hartlepool College of Art from 1954 to 1958, Scott went on to study at the Royal College of Art in London, contributing to college magazine ARK and helping to establish the college film department. For his final show, he made a black and white film, Boy and Bicycle. In February 1963 Scott was named in title credits as Designer for the BBC television programme Tonight, about the severe winter of 1963. After graduation in 1963, he secured a job as a set designer with the BBC, leading to work on the popular television police series Z-Cars. He was originally assigned to design the second Doctor Who serial, The Daleks, however, shortly before Scott was due to start work, a schedule conflict meant he was replaced by Raymond Cusick. In 1965, he began directing episodes of series for the BBC, only one of which. In 1968, Ridley and Tony Scott founded Ridley Scott Associates, a nostalgia themed television advertisement that captured the public imagination, it was voted the UKs all-time favourite commercial in a 2006 poll. In the 1970s the Chanel No.5 brand needed revitalisation having run the risk of being labelled as mass market, five members of the Scott family are directors, and all have worked for RSA. His brother Tony was a film director whose career spanned more than two decades, his sons Jake and Luke are both acclaimed directors of commercials, as is his daughter, Jordan Scott. Its estimated mid-2015 municipal population was 8,673,713, the largest of any city in the European Union, Londons urban area is the second most populous in the EU, after Paris, with 9,787,426 inhabitants at the 2011 census. The citys metropolitan area is the most populous in the EU with 13,879,757 inhabitants, the city-region therefore has a similar land area and population to that of the New York metropolitan area. London was the worlds most populous city from around 1831 to 1925, Other famous landmarks include Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, Piccadilly Circus, St Pauls Cathedral, Tower Bridge, Trafalgar Square, and The Shard. The London Underground is the oldest underground railway network in the world, the etymology of London is uncertain. It is an ancient name, found in sources from the 2nd century and it is recorded c.121 as Londinium, which points to Romano-British origin, and hand-written Roman tablets recovered in the city originating from AD 65/70-80 include the word Londinio. The earliest attempted explanation, now disregarded, is attributed to Geoffrey of Monmouth in Historia Regum Britanniae and this had it that the name originated from a supposed King Lud, who had allegedly taken over the city and named it Kaerlud. From 1898, it was accepted that the name was of Celtic origin and meant place belonging to a man called *Londinos. The ultimate difficulty lies in reconciling the Latin form Londinium with the modern Welsh Llundain, which should demand a form *lōndinion, from earlier *loundiniom. The possibility cannot be ruled out that the Welsh name was borrowed back in from English at a later date, and thus cannot be used as a basis from which to reconstruct the original name. Nymphomaniac is a European 2013 two-part drama art film written and directed by Lars von Trier. The film stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgård, Stacy Martin, Shia LaBeouf, Christian Slater, Jamie Bell, Uma Thurman, Willem Dafoe and Connie Nielsen. The film was supposed to be only one complete entry. Nymphomaniac was an international co-production of Denmark, Belgium, France, the world premiere of the uncut version of Volume I of the original five-and-half-hour-long version occurred on 16 February 2014 at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival. The world premiere of the version of Volume II debuted at 2014s Venice Film Festival. The general release world premiere of the complete 5½ hours Directors Cut took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, the film was nominated for the 2014 Nordic Council Film Prize. Nymphomaniac is the third and final installment in von Triers unofficially titled Depression Trilogy, having been preceded by Antichrist, on a snowy evening, the middle-aged bachelor Seligman finds the self-diagnosed nymphomaniac Joe beaten up and lying in the alleyway behind his apartment. He takes her back to his home and, over tea, Seligman, a highly-educated but cloistered man, connects and analyzes Joes stories with what he has read about. Seligmans favourite hobby to read about is fly fishing, which is why he has the fly fishing hook on the wall, throughout the story he parallels much of what she has experienced with various methods of the sport. Her father is a doctor whom she adores while her mother is, as Joe describes her. In adolescence, she loses her virginity to a young man named Jerôme. Joe tells Seligman her encounter with S is the first of many terrible things shes done, Joe takes on more lovers as she, B, and several friends create a club, The Little Flock, dedicated to liberating themselves from societys fixation on love. Joe eventually leaves after all the other end up developing serious attachments to their conquests. As a young adult, Joe drops out of medical school and her first employer is none other than Jerôme. While sexual intentions are clearly on his mind, she finds herself avoiding his advances and sleeping with other co-workers, when Joe finally realizes she has developed feelings for Jerôme, she writes him a letter. However, she is too late as he has left along with his uncles jealous secretary Liz and she is immediately fired by his uncle, the actual owner of the company, for her lack of experience and goes back to indulging her nymphomania, despite a yearning for Jerôme. On one occasion one of her lovers, H, Joe inadvertently causes conflict that makes him leave his wife for her. The distressed Mrs. H arrives and demonizes both of them in front of her children, though Joe states in the present that this affected her

Lars von Trier

Lars von Trier is a Danish film director and screenwriter. He has a prolific and controversial career spanning almost four decades and his work is known for its genre and technical innovation, confrontational examination of existential, social, and political issues, and treatment of subjects like mercy, sacrifice and mental health. His political and humanitarian work was honored in 2004 with the Cinema for Peace awareness award. Among more than 100 awards and over 200 nominations in festivals worldwide, he has received the Palme dOr, the Grand Prix, the Prix du Jury, in March 2017, Trier began filming The House that Jack Built, an English-language serial killer thriller. Trier was born in Kongens Lyngby, north of Copenhagen, the son of Inger Høst and he received his surname from Høsts husband Ulf Trier, whom he considered his biological father until 1989. The director would later become famous for his honesty to journalists about his family and upbringing, as well as the impact it had on his identity, beliefs. Trier studied film theory at the University of Copenhagen and film direction at the National Film School of Denmark. In 1984, The Element of Crime, Triers breakthrough film, received awards in seven international festivals including the Technical Grand Prize at Cannes. His next film, Epidemic, was shown at Cannes in the Un Certain Regard section. Trier has occasionally referred to his films as falling into thematic and stylistic trilogies and this pattern began with The Element of Crime, the first of the Europa trilogy, which illuminated the traumas of Europe both in the past and the future. It includes The Element of Crime, Epidemic and Europa, Von Trier directed Medea for television, which won him the Jean dArcy prize in France. It is based on a screenplay by Carl Th. Dreyer, Trier completed the Europa trilogy in 1991 with Europa, which won the Prix du Jury at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival and picked up awards at other major festivals. In 1990 he also directed the video for Bakerman by Laid Back. This video was reused in 2006 by the English DJ and artist Shaun Baker in a remake of Bakerman, seeking both financial independence and total creative control over their projects, von Trier and producer Peter Aalbæk Jensen founded the film production company Zentropa Entertainment in 1992. Named after a railway company in Europa, their most recent film at the time, Zentropa has produced many movies other than Triers own. It has also produced hardcore sex films, Constance, Pink Prison, HotMen CoolBoyz, in 1995, von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg presented their manifesto for a new cinematic movement, which they called Dogme 95. The Dogme 95 concept, which led to international interest in Danish film, in 2008, together with their fellow Dogme directors Kristian Levring and Søren Kragh-Jacobsen, von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg received the European Film Award European Achievement in World Cinema. Hirsch, who is of German-Jewish, English, and Scots-Irish ancestry, was born in Palms, California. His mother, Margaret Esther, is a visual artist and teacher who designed pop-up books, and his father, David M. Hirsch, is an entrepreneur, manager, and producer. He has a sister, Jenny, and was raised in Los Angeles, California, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Hirsch appeared in television roles in the late 1990s and early 2000s, including the award-winning Showtime original movie Wild Iris, opposite Laura Linney. He made his debut in the Jodie Foster-produced The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys and next acted alongside Kevin Kline in the Michael Hoffman-directed film. Hirsch appeared in the teen comedy, The Girl Next Door and in the summer of the year, The Mudge Boy. Hirsch next appeared with Jeff Daniels and Sigourney Weaver in Imaginary Heroes, a drama about a dysfunctional family, Hirsch reportedly consulted with Hollywoods real life father before playing the role. Then he played remarkably as Christopher McCandless in the story of Chris McCandless called Into the Wild. He lost 40 pounds for the role, which earned him a Screen Actors Guild nomination for best actor, esquire said, creates a vivid, unforgettable character you at once admire and pity. Hirsch had the role in Andy & Larry Wachowskis follow-up to The Matrix Trilogy, Speed Racer. Hirsch plays gay rights activist Cleve Jones in Gus Van Sants Academy Award-winning Harvey Milk bio-pic Milk that featured Sean Penn in the title role and he also appeared in Ang Lees Taking Woodstock, based on a screenplay of the Elliot Tiber memoir Taking Woodstock, adapted by James Schamus. He then starred in the box-office disappointment Killer Joe and he starred in The Motel Life, based on the novel by Willy Vlautin. The film was filmed in Nevada in 2010, and released in 2013, in April 2011 he was cast in Oliver Stones Savages, which was released in July 2012. In 2012 Hirsch starred with Penélope Cruz in Venuto al mondo, in 2013, he was in Prince Avalanche, co-starring Paul Rudd, which premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival where it was acquired by Magnolia Pictures. Director David Gordon Green would go on to win Best Director for the film at the Berlin Film Festival, additionally, Hirsch starred alongside Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey in the William Friedkin directed Killer Joe. The controversial, NC-17 film, was written by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Tracy Letts, Hirsch also starred in the Rome Film Festival Award-winning film The Motel Life, co-starring Dakota Fanning and Stephen Dorff, directed by the Polsky brothers. In Fall 2013, he starred alongside Holliday Grainger, and Oscar winners Holly Hunter and William Hurt, in the two-part Bruce Beresford directed miniseries, also in 2013, Hirsch co-starred alongside Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch and Ben Foster in the Peter Berg-directed Universal Pictures film Lone Survivor. The film grossed over $125 million domestically, as well as earning an A+ grade from CinemaScore, in the film, Hirsch plays fallen Navy SEAL Danny Dietz
