Basketball

Basketball is a non-contact team sport played on a rectangular court by two teams of five players each. The objective is to shoot a ball through a hoop 18 inches in diameter and 10 feet high that is mounted to a backboard at each end of the court. The game was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, a team can score a field goal by shooting the ball through the basket being defended by the opposition team during regular play. A field goal scores three points for the team if the player shoots from behind the three-point line. A team can also score via free throws, which are worth one point, the team with the most points at the end of the game wins, but additional time is mandated when the score is tied at the end of regulation. The ball can be advanced on the court by passing it to a teammate and it is a violation to lift, or drag, ones pivot foot without dribbling the ball, to carry it, or to hold the ball with both hands then resume dribbling. The game has many techniques for displaying skill—ball-handling, shooting, passing, dribbling, dunking, shot-blocking. The point guard directs the on court action of the team, implementing the coachs game plan, Basketball is one of the worlds most popular and widely viewed sports. Outside North America, the top clubs from national leagues qualify to continental championships such as the Euroleague, the FIBA Basketball World Cup attracts the top national teams from around the world. Each continent hosts regional competitions for teams, like EuroBasket. The FIBA Womens Basketball World Cup features the top womens basketball teams from continental championships. The main North American league is the WNBA, whereas the EuroLeague Women has been dominated by teams from the Russian Womens Basketball Premier League, in early December 1891, Canadian Dr. He sought a vigorous indoor game to keep his students occupied, after rejecting other ideas as either too rough or poorly suited to walled-in gymnasiums, he wrote the basic rules and nailed a peach basket onto a 10-foot elevated track. Basketball was originally played with a soccer ball and these laces could cause bounce passes and dribbling to be unpredictable. Eventually a lace-free ball construction method was invented, and this change to the game was endorsed by Naismith, dribbling was not part of the original game except for the bounce pass to teammates. Passing the ball was the means of ball movement. Dribbling was eventually introduced but limited by the shape of early balls. Dribbling only became a part of the game around the 1950s

Iowa State Cyclones men's basketball

The Iowa State Cyclones mens basketball team represents Iowa State University and competes in the Big 12 Conference of NCAA Division I. The team is coached by Steve Prohm, he is in his 2nd year at Iowa State, the Cyclones play their home games at Hilton Coliseum on Iowa States campus. From 1907 to 1928, the Cyclones played in the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association, managing a few winning records in-conference, in 1929, the Cyclones moved to the Big Six Conference and named Louis Menze as head coach. Over the next 19 years, Menze would lead the Cyclones to four conference championships, two of these teams earned consideration for the then eight-team NCAA Tournament, the 1941 squad lost in a pre-Tournament qualifying game to Creighton. Neither these tournament wins, nor their regular season performances, qualified the Cyclones for postseason play in the 33 years between Menzes and Johnny Orrs stints in the coaching position. However, the 1957 Cyclones were ranked #3 in the nation after handing Wilt Chamberlains #1 Kansas its first loss, Gary Thompson outscored Chamberlain, while Don Medsker held Chamberlain to a career low in scoring and then hit the game winner at the buzzer. No.3 remains the schools national ranking. From the introduction of the Big Eights postseason tournament in 1977 until Johnny Orrs fifth season in 1985, Johnny Orr came to Iowa State from Michigan in 1980. Iowa States athletics director had called Orr to inquire about Michigan assistant Bill Frieder, when Orr learned of the salary Iowa State would offer Frieder, he negotiated the Iowa State head coaching job for himself. Orr is credited with building Hilton Magic and laying the foundation for Iowa States success in mens basketball, Orrs first team, led by junior forward Robert Estes produced a lackluster 9–18 record. Freshman forward Ron Harris, whom Orr considered his first prominent Cyclone recruit, led by sophomore Ron Harris and freshman recruit Barry Stevens of Flint, Michigan, Orrs 1981–82 team finished the season with a 10–17 overall record and a 5–9 record in Big Eight play. Harris gave the Cyclones 13.3 points per game, while Stevens contributed 13.0 points per game, senior Robert Estes added 10.3 points per game. The Cyclones improved to a 13–15 overall record in the 1982–83 season, many of the Cyclone faithful regard sophomore Barry Stevens buzzer-beating shot against 10th-ranked Missouri during the 1982–83 season as the foundational example of Hilton Magic. Stevens tallied per-game averages of 16.8 points and 5.2 rebounds for the season, Ron Harris contributed 14.3 points per game. The Cyclones played in the 1984 National Invitation Tournament, losing to Marquette in the first round, junior forward Barry Stevens averaged 22.2 points per game on the season. Seniors Terrence Allen and Ron Harris each averaged 11.0 points per game, Iowa State advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time under Orr and for just the second time in the history of the program. The Cyclones, the #13 seed in the Midwest Region, lost to #4 seed Ohio State by a score of 75–64, ISU managed to upset 10th-ranked Kansas twice during the regular season. Barry Stevens averaged 21.7 points per game, Jeff Hornacek recorded 12.5 points per game, and freshman Jeff Grayer averaged 12.2 points and 6.5 rebounds on the season

Big 12 Conference

The Big 12 Conference is a ten-school collegiate athletic conference headquartered in Irving, Texas. Its ten members, located in Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, additionally, the Big 12 has ten affiliate members, six for the sport of wrestling, one for womens gymnastics, and 3 for womens rowing. The Big 12 Conference is a 501 nonprofit organization incorporated in Delaware, the Big 12 was formerly composed of 12 schools, hence its name, it was formed in 1996 when four schools from the collapsing Southwest Conference joined with the pre-existing Big Eight Conference. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State were grouped with the four newcomers in the Big 12 South, TCU and West Virginia joined from the Mountain West and Big East Conferences respectively to offset two of the departing schools, bringing the conference to its current strength. Attempts to rename the Big 12 to reflect its current strength would lead to confusion with the current Big Ten Conference, the Big 12 Conference commissioner is Bob Bowlsby. Full members Assoc. member Other Conference The Big 12 Conference sponsors championship competition in ten mens, nonetheless, it is an open coed sport in NCAA college athletics, with mens, womens, and coed teams in all NCAA divisions competing against each other. TCU and West Virginia both field coed teams, through 2017, West Virginia with 19 national titles and TCU with two, together have won over half of the NCAA titles awarded since the inaugural NCAA championship in 1980. West Virginia also won four national titles. The Big 12 began athletic play in the fall of 1996, from its formation until 2011, its 12 members competed in two divisions. Between 2011 and 2012 four charter members left the conference while two joined in 2013. The Big 12 is unique among the current Power Five conferences in that it only has 10 members, despite the name, causing some confusion. From 1987 to 2015,12 or more members were required for a championship game. Former Texas Athletic Director DeLoss Dodds and former football coach Mack Brown, along with Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops, critics argued it was a competitive advantage over other contract conferences. Conferences with a game have their division champions typically play one of their toughest games of the year in the last week of the regular season. Unlike the other Power 5 conferences in which a team plays a portion of the other teams in the conference each season. This theoretically allows for the declaration of a de facto champion without the need for a rematch between the top two teams in the conference. On June 3,2016, the conference announced it would reinstate the football game in the 2017 season. The University of Alabama is a public research university located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States, and the flagship of the University of Alabama System. Founded in 1820, UA is the oldest and largest of the universities in Alabama. UA offers programs of study in 13 academic divisions leading to bachelors, masters, Education Specialist, the only publicly supported law school in the state is at UA. The school was a center of activity during the American Civil War, the University of Alabama varsity football program, which was inaugurated in 1892, ranks as one of 10 winningest programs in US history. In a 1913 speech then-president George H. Denny extolled the university as the capstone of the school system in the state, lending the university its current nickname. The University of Alabama has consistently ranked as one of the top 50 public universities in the nation by the U. S. News & World Report. In 1818, U. S. Congress authorized the newly created Alabama Territory to set aside a township for the establishment of a seminary of learning. When Alabama was admitted to the Union on December 14,1819, the board chose as the site of the campus a place which was then just outside the city limits of Tuscaloosa, the state capital at the time. The new campus was designed by William Nichols, also the architect of newly completed Alabama State Capitol building, the universitys charter was presented to the first university president in the nave of Christ Episcopal Church. UA opened its doors to students on April 18,1831, an academy-style institution during the Antebellum period, the university emphasized the classics and the social and natural sciences. There were around 100 students per year at UA in the 1830s, consequently, only a fraction of students who enrolled in the early years remained enrolled for long and even fewer graduated. Those who did graduate, however, often had distinguished careers in Alabama, early graduates included Benjamin F. Porter and Alexander Meek. As the state and university matured, a literary culture evolved on campus. UA had one of the largest libraries in the country on the eve of the Civil War with more than 7,000 volumes, campbell, novelist William Gilmore Simms, and Professor Frederick Barnard. The addresses to those societies reveal a vibrant intellectual culture in Tuscaloosa, they illustrate the proslavery ideas that were so central to the university. Discipline and student behavior was an issue at the university almost from the day it opened. Early presidents attempted to enforce strict rules regarding conduct, Students were prohibited from drinking, swearing, making unauthorized visits off-campus, or playing musical instruments outside a one-hour time frame. Yet riots and gunfights were not an uncommon occurrence, to combat the severe discipline problem, president Landon Garland lobbied and received approval from the legislature in 1860 to transform the university into a military school

The Centenary Gentlemen basketball team represents Centenary College, located in Shreveport, Louisiana, in NCAA Division III mens basketball competition. The Gentlemen nickname is exclusive to athletes and teams, Ladies is used for womens teams. The team is a member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, prior to 2011, Centenary was a member of the NCAA Division I, and competed in the Summit League. The Gentlemen were coached by Rob Flaska from 2005 until 2008 and his contract was not renewed after the 2007-08 season. Greg Gary was hired to replace him, mark Richmond has become the assistant coach for the Gents and brings big-time Big East experience from West Virginia to the staff. Tulane Green Wave men's basketball

The Tulane Green Wave mens basketball team represents Tulane University in NCAA Division I college basketball. The team competes in the American Athletic Conference and they play home games on campus in Devlin Fieldhouse, the 9th-oldest active basketball venue in the nation. The teams last appearance in the NCAA Division I Mens Basketball Tournament was in 1995 and it rejoined many of its previous conference mates when it became a member of the American Athletic Conference in 2014. Tulanes mens basketball played its first game on December 9,1905. Clyde Eads and Jon Johnson were granted immunity to testify against Williams, although he was indicted, the judge eventually declared a mistrial, and no sentence was handed down. Williams spent the next nine years with the NBAs Cleveland Cavaliers, within days of Williams indictment, the entire basketball coaching staff and the athletic director resigned. Shortly afterward school president Eamon Kelly disbanded the basketball program and he didnt intend to ever allow its return but relented in 1988 after several students convinced him that they were being punished for something that occurred when they werent at Tulane. New head coach Perry Clark rebuilt the program to unprecedented success, including a 1991–92 season that started 13–0, the 1992–93 and 1994–95 teams matched that teams success, but Tulane hasnt approached such heights since. Clark resigned in 2000 to coach the Miami Hurricanes, the Green Wave failed to make any postseason tournament under Clarks successor, Shawn Finney, or under former Maryland assistant Dave Dickerson. Ed Conroy was hired as the new coach in 2010. His teams have seen initial success against out-of-conference foes in each of its seasons but have done poorly in conference games, the 2010–11 team finished 13–17 after a 12–3 start, while his 2011–12 team finished 15–16 after starting 14–6. On March 14,2016, Tulane fired Ed Conroy after six years as head coach and he was replaced by Mike Dunleavy, Sr. The Green Wave have appeared in three NCAA Tournaments, the Green Wave have appeared in six National Invitation Tournaments. Murray State Racers men's basketball

Murray State Racers mens basketball program represents intercollegiate mens basketball at Murray State University. The school competes in the Ohio Valley Conference in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and play games at the CFSB Center in Murray. Murray State made its 15th appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2012, three times the Racers advanced in the tournament, most recently when it defeated Colorado State in 2012. In 1988, Murray State defeated North Carolina State in the first round, in 2010,22 years to the date of the 1988 win, the Racers beat Vanderbilt and lost to eventual runner-up Butler in the second round. Murray States first basketball venues were Wilson Hall, Lovett Auditorium, which had a capacity of 1,500, and Carr Health Building, Racer Arena opened in 1954 and entertained Racer fans for 43 years. While its capacity was 5,500, over 6,000 people crowded the arena on numerous occasions, Racer Arena is now a volleyball-only facility, the largest in NCAA Division I. Replacing Racer Arena is the CFSB Center, the current home of Murray State mens basketball, constructed in June 1998 at a cost of $20 million, the facility is a state-of-the-art arena which can host other events besides basketball. The CFSB Center sits 8,602 and includes a $250,000 scoreboard, the first basketball game at the CFSB Center was against Southern Illinois on November 14,1998, a 65-62 victory for the Racers in front of 7,633 spectators. Murray State basketball has consistently recognized as one of the best college basketball programs in the history of the sport. In 2005, Street & Smiths named the Racers the 52nd best program of all time, in their prestige system, ESPN ranked Murray State the 30th best programs from 1984 to 2008, breaking a tie with Villanova due to a higher winning percentage. The Racers are the highest true mid-major team in their rankings, Carlisle Cutchin launched the Murray State basketball program in 1925. At the time, Murray State was a college and the nickname was the Thoroughbreds. In the 1935–36 season, Cutchin coached Murray State to its highest win percentage for a season at.920 and that season also included Murray States best start, at 19-1. In his final season, he led the Thoroughbreds to the game of the 1941 NAIA Mens Division I Basketball Tournament. Since he retired in 1941, he has maintained his position as the all-time winningest coach in Murray State basketball history, rice Mountjoy was hired as the next mens basketball coach from Danville High School, where he was athletic director. In his only season with the Thoroughbreds, he coached the team to an 18-4 record and that season was marked by strong play from early jump shot proponent Joe Fulks, who transferred from Millsaps College. Mountjoy left after the 1941–42 season to coach Augusta Tilghman High School in nearby Paducah, former Murray State basketball player and then-freshman team coach John Miller replaced Mountjoy as head basketball coach. His best season was his first, when he led the team to a 21–5 record, from Southern Illinois, Harlan Hodges led the team to two NAIA Tournaments and two No.16 AP rankings in his six seasons, with a 109–66 record

NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament

The tournament was created in 1939 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, and was the idea of Ohio State University coach Harold Olsen. Played mostly during March, it has one of the most famous annual sporting events in the United States. The tournament teams include champions from 32 Division I conferences, and 36 teams which are awarded at-large berths, the 68 teams are divided into four regions and organized into a single-elimination bracket, which pre-determines, when a team wins a game, which team it will face next. Each team is seeded, or ranked, within its region from 1 to 32, after an initial four games between eight lower-ranked teams, the tournament occurs during the course of three weekends, at pre-selected neutral sites across the United States. The Final Four is usually played during the first weekend of April and these four teams, one from each region, compete in a pre-selected location for the national championship. The tournament has been at least partially televised since 1969, currently, the games are broadcast by CBS, TBS, TNT, and truTV under the trade-name NCAA March Madness. Since 2011, all games are available for viewing nationwide and internationally, such as in the Philippines, as television coverage has grown, so too has the tournaments popularity. Currently, millions of Americans fill out a bracket, attempting to predict the outcome of all 67 games of the tournament. With 11 national titles, UCLA has the record for the most NCAA Mens Division I Basketball Championships, the University of Kentucky is second, with eight national titles. The University of North Carolina is in place, with six titles, while Duke University. The University of Connecticut is sixth with four national titles, the University of Kansas and University of Louisville are tied with three championships. During that time Villanova, Michigan, UNLV, Duke, Arkansas, Arizona, Connecticut, Maryland, Syracuse, the NCAA has changed the tournament format several times since its inception, most often representing an increase of the number of teams. This section describes the tournament as it has operated since 2011, for changes during the course of its history, and to see how the tournament operated during past years, go to Format history, below. A total of 68 teams qualify for the tournament played during March, thirty-two teams earn automatic bids as their respective conference champions. Of the 32 Division I all-sports conferences, all 32 currently hold championship tournaments to determine which team receives the automatic qualification. The Ivy League was the last Division I conference that did not conduct a tournament, through the 2015–16 season, if two or more Ivies shared a regular-season championship, a one-game playoff was used to decide the tournament participant. Since 2017, the league conducts their own postseason tournament, the committee also determines where all sixty-eight teams are seeded and placed in the bracket. The tournament is divided into four regions and each region has at least sixteen teams, the committee is charged with making each of the four regions as close as possible in overall quality of teams from wherever they come from

National Invitation Tournament

The National Invitation Tournament is a mens college basketball tournament operated by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Played at Madison Square Garden in New York City each March and April, over time it became eclipsed by the NCAA Division I Mens Basketball Tournament – known today informally as March Madness and The Big Dance. The NIT has since been regarded more as a tournament for teams that did not receive a berth in the NCAA tournament. A second, much more recent NIT tournament is played in November, formerly the Preseason NIT, it was founded in 1985. Like the postseason NIT, its final rounds are played at Madison Square Garden, both tournaments were operated by the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association until 2005, when they were purchased by the NCAA, and the MIBA disbanded. Unless otherwise qualified, the terms NIT or National Invitation Tournament refer to the tournament in both common and official use. The first NIT was won by the Temple University Owls over the Colorado Buffaloes and this became the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association in 1948. Originally the tournament invited a field of 6 teams, with all games played at Madison Square Garden in downtown Manhattan. The field was expanded to 8 teams in 1941,12 in 1949,14 in 1965,16 in 1968,24 in 1979,32 in 1980, in 2007, the tournament reverted to the current 32-team format. Some conferences, such as the Southeastern Conference, were racially segregated, from its onset and at least into the mid-1950s, the NIT was regarded as the most prestigious showcase for college basketball. The winner of the National Invitation Tournament was regarded as more of a national champion than the actual, titular, national champion, several teams played in both the NIT and NCAA tournaments in the same year, beginning with Colorado and Duquesne in 1940. Colorado won the NIT in 1940 but subsequently finished fourth in the NCAA West Region, in 1949, some Kentucky players were bribed by gamblers to lose their first round game in the NIT. This same Kentucky team went on to win the NCAA, the champions of both the NCAA and NIT tournaments played each other for a few years during World War II. From 1943 to 1945, the American Red Cross sponsored a charity game between each years tournament champions to raise money for the war effort. The series was described by Ray Meyer as not just benefit games, the NCAA champion prevailed in all three games. The Helms Athletic Foundation retroactively selected the NIT champion as its champion for 1938. In 1943 the NCAA tournament moved to share Madison Square Garden with the NIT in an effort to increase the credibility of the NCAA Tournament. Ohio Valley Conference

The Ohio Valley Conference is a collegiate athletic conference which operates in the Midwestern and Southeastern United States. It participates in Division I of the NCAA, the football programs compete in the Football Championship Subdivision. The OVC has 12 members,9 of which compete in football in the conference, the plan was put on hold due to World War II, but it was resurrected after the conclusion of the war. In 1948, the three schools joined with Louisville, Morehead State, and Evansville to form the Ohio Valley Conference, historically, the OVC was a pioneer in racial desegregation with Morehead State signing the conferences first black athlete, Marshall Banks, in 1958. The rest of the OVC soon followed in Morehead States wake, all other HBCUs in NCAA Division I are members of either the MEAC or SWAC, conferences made up entirely of HBCUs. The OVC has also been a leader in advancement of sports opportunities for women, since 2009, the OVC has been led by Commissioner Beth DeBauche, one of only six female commissioners for the thirty-two Division I conferences. When the national debate on the problem reached its apex in the mid-1990s, principles of fair play, ethical conduct and respect for ones opponent. Since then, the OVC has also introduced individual, team, founded by six schools, the expansions of 2007 and 2011 have brought the Ohio Valley Conference membership to twelve schools, the most in its history. In its first two years, the network provided well over 600,000 viewings of streamed live video of more than 1400 events. Note Morehead States football team competes in the Pioneer Football League, Notes Notes Columbus State dropped rifle after the 2014–15 school year. Austin Peays football team left the OVC after the 1996 season to compete as an NCAA D-I FCS Independent, after four seasons as an Independent, the team joined the Pioneer Football League in 2001, and remained there through the 2005 season. Austin Peay then returned to football, spending the 2006 season as an Independent before re-entering OVC football competition in 2007. Starting with the 2012–13 school year, the member schools divided into two divisions for those sports in which all schools compete. In the 2014–15 season, womens sports with twelve teams returned to a 12 team ranking, the Ohio Valley Conference currently offers championship competition in eighteen NCAA sanctioned sports, eight for men, nine for women, and rifle for mens, womens, and coed teams. All competing OVC schools have coed teams, and Tennessee-Martin has both a womens and a coed team, womens varsity sports not sponsored by the Ohio Valley Conference which are played by OVC schools ‡ = Rodeo is sanctioned by the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, not the NCAA. While UT-Martin considers rodeo to be a varsity sport, Murray State operates their rodeo teams a club sport within the Hutson School of Agriculture, ¶ = Eastern Illinois is one of only 14 schools playing NCAA-sanctioned rugby. Big 12 Men's Basketball Tournament

The Big 12 Mens Basketball Tournament is the championship mens basketball tournament in the Big 12 Conference. It is a tournament of four rounds, with the top four seeds getting byes in the first round. Starting in 2012, the top six seeds will get byes in the first round, seeding is based on regular season records. The tournament has been every year since the first full basketball season was completed in 1997. Since that time, it was held in Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri in early March for every year up until 2003, and also in 2005. In 2003,2004, and 2006 it was held at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, in 2008 it was again held in Kansas City, but this time at the Sprint Center. The 2009 edition of the championship was held in Oklahoma City, on June 1,2012, it was announced that the Big 12 Tournament would stay in Kansas City through 2016. Kansas has won the most Big 12 postseason titles as well, numbers in parentheses refer to each teams finish/seed in the tournament for that year. Iowa State University of Science and Technology is a public flagship land-grant and space-grant research university located in Ames, Iowa, United States. Iowa State is classified as a Research University with very high activity by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Iowa State is also a member of the Association of American Universities, Iowa State has also been designated an Innovation and Economic Prosperity University, a designation awarded to only 54 public universities in the U. S. D. Level, plus a degree program in Veterinary Medicine. Iowa State Universitys athletic teams, the Cyclones, compete in Division I of the NCAA and are a member of the Big 12 Conference. The Cyclones field 16 varsity teams and have won numerous NCAA national championships, in 1856, the Iowa General Assembly enacted legislation to establish the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm. This institution was established on March 22,1858, by the General Assembly. Story County was chosen as the location on June 21,1859, beating proposals from Johnson, Kossuth, Marshall, the original farm of 648 acres was purchased for a cost of $5,379. Iowa was the first state in the nation to accept the provisions of the Morrill Act of 1862, Iowa subsequently designated Iowa State as the land-grant college on March 29,1864. From the start, Iowa Agricultural College focused on the ideals that higher education should be accessible to all and these ideals are integral to the land-grant university. The institution was coeducational from the first preparatory class admitted in 1868, the formal admitting of students began the following year, and the first graduating class of 1872 consisted of 24 men and two women. The Farm House, the first building on the Iowa State campus, was completed in 1861 before the campus was occupied by students or classrooms. It became the home of the superintendent of the Model Farm and in later years, Iowa States first president, Adonijah Welch, briefly stayed at the Farm House and penned his inaugural speech in a second floor bedroom. The colleges first farm tenants primed the land for agricultural experimentation, the Iowa Experiment Station was one of the universitys prominent features. Practical courses of instruction were taught, including one designed to give a training for the career of a farmer. Courses in mechanical, civil, electrical, and mining engineering were also part of the curriculum, in 1870, President Welch and I. P. Robert, professor of agriculture, held three-day farmers institutes at Cedar Falls, Council Bluffs, Washington, and Muscatine. Murray State University is a four-year public university located in Murray, Kentucky, United States. In addition to the campus, Murray State operates extended campuses offering upper level and graduate courses in Paducah, Hopkinsville, Madisonville. One would be in the part of the state, which caused many cities. Wells spoke on behalf of the city of Murray to convince the Normal School Commission to choose his city, on September 2,1922, Murray was chosen as the site of the western normal school, while Morehead was chosen for the eastern normal school. On November 26,1922, John Wesley Carr was elected the first president of the Murray State Normal School by the State Board of Education, believing it had the authority to elect the president, the Normal School Commission picked Rainey Wells to be the first president. On May 15,1923, The Kentucky Court of Appeals ruled for the State Board of Education, Murray State Normal School opened on September 23,1923. Until the first building was completed, now Wrather West Kentucky Museum, all students commuted until the first dormitory, Wells Hall, was constructed in 1925. Wilson Hall was also completed under Carrs presidency, with other structures were in progress, in 1926, Rainey T. Wells, recognized as the founder of Murray State, became its second president. Wells served from 1926 to 1932, and during this time Lovett Auditorium, Carr Health Building, in 1926, the Normal School was renamed Murray State Normal School and Teachers College, and the General Assembly granted it authority to confer baccalaureate degrees. In 1928, the college was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges, in 1930, the name was changed to Murray State Teachers College and it was granted authority to offer liberal arts and preprofessional courses. The name was changed again in 1948 to Murray State College, the Shield is the official seal of the university. It is taken from the heraldic coat-of-arms of the family of William Murray, Earl of Mansfield, William Murray is an ancestor of the Murray family from whom the city and the university take their names. The shield is blue with a double gold border—its three stars represent hope, endeavor and achievement, the oldest and most easily recognizable buildings on the Murray State campus are situated around a large, grassy, tree-lined area on the south side of campus. This part of campus, known as the Quadrangle, is bounded by 16th Street to the west, 15th Street to the east, Lovett Auditorium to the north, ground was broken for Wrather Hall on October 15,1923, and it has been in use since 1924. Vienna is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, it had a population of 15,687, in August 2013, CNN/Money and Money magazine ranked Vienna, VA third on its list of the 100 best places to live in the United States. Tysons Corner, a residential, commercial and shopping district, is nearby, non-native settlement in the region dates to ca. In 1754, prominent soldier and land owner Colonel Charles Broadwater settled within the town boundaries, broadwaters son-in-law, John Hunter built the first recorded house there in 1767, naming it Ayr Hill That name was subsequently applied to the tiny, developing community. His home was outside the town but had a Vienna mailing address and he used dead drops in nearby Foxstone Park to deliver U. S. government secrets to his handlers, and to collect cash or diamonds in exchange. Hanssen was sentenced that year to serve life terms in prison. Vienna is located at 38°54′N 77°16′W, at an elevation of 358 feet and it lies in the Piedmont approximately 5.5 miles southwest of the Potomac River. Wolftrap Creek, a tributary of nearby Difficult Run, flows north from its source in the part of town. The Bear Branch of Accotink Creek, a Potomac tributary, flows south from its source in the part of town. Located in Northern Virginia on Interstate 66, Vienna is 12 miles west of Washington, D. Tunnel Hill is a town in northwest Whitfield County and southern Catoosa County, Georgia, United States. It is part of the Dalton Metropolitan Statistical Area, the population was 1,209 at the 2000 census. The community was first known as Doe Run and it was incorporated on March 4,1848 as Tunnelsville, and changed its name in 1856 to Tunnel Hill. The railroad tunnel was the first to be completed south of the Mason–Dixon line, the rail line operated during the late 1840s with passengers and freight being portaged over the mountain while the tunnel was constructed. Another tunnel next to it, completed in 1928, is used by CSX Transportation. The original Chetoogeta Mountain Tunnel is now paved for tourists to walk through, it has even more historic value, throughout the American Civil War, the area homes around Tunnel Hill were used as part of a major hospital system. Wounded CSA Gen. John Bell Hood was brought to the Clisby Austin House after the Battle of Chickamauga and his leg was buried in a family cemetery near the house. Oglethorpe University is a private, liberal arts college in Brookhaven, a city adjoining the northern edge of Atlanta, in the U. S. state of Georgia. Originally chartered in 1835, it was named in honor of General James Edward Oglethorpe, Oglethorpe University was chartered in 1835 in Midway, just south of the city of Milledgeville, then the state capital. The school was built and, at time, governed by the Presbyterian Church. The American Civil War led to the schools closing from 1862 to 1866, the college followed the relocation of the capital to Atlanta. In 1870, it began holding classes at the present site of Atlanta City Hall, plagued by financial difficulties, the school closed its doors after only two years. Oglethorpe College was re-chartered as an institution in 1913. In 1915 the cornerstone to the new campus was laid at its present location on Peachtree Road in Brookhaven, the person behind rebuilding Oglethorpe was Dr. Thornwell Jacobs, whose grandfather Ferdinand Jacobs had served on the faculty of Old Oglethorpe. Jacobs would serve as president for three decades. In the early 1940s Oglethorpe University had a medical school, under the direction of Dr. John Bernard, the university was given several elephants for research, who had been poisoned by the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus. After the students had finished dissecting the animals they were buried under what is today as the Philip Weltner Library. Oglethorpe University became Oglethorpe College in 1965, and reclaimed the designation university in 1972, many of Oglethorpes campus buildings were built in a Gothic revival architecture style. This area of the 100-acre campus is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, in December 2009, The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully reaffirmed the Universitys accreditation. Oglethorpes collegiate coat-of-arms is emblazoned with three heads and the Latin inscription Nescit Cedere, meaning He does not know how to give up. The Conant Performing Arts Center, completed in 1997, served as the home of Georgia Shakespeare until fall 2014. The Oglethorpe University Museum of Art opened in 1984 and is located on the top floor of the Philip Weltner Library, the two galleries, the South and Skylight, and gift shop cover 7,000 square feet. Bringing in thousands of visitors each year, the museum has become an important point of interest in Atlantas art community, in 1994, Lupton Hall, Phoebe Hearst Hall, Lowry Hall and Hermance Stadium were added to the National Register of Historic Places. Atlanta is the capital of and the most populous city in the U. S. state of Georgia, with an estimated 2015 population of 463,878. Atlanta is the cultural and economic center of the Atlanta metropolitan area, home to 5,710,795 people, Atlanta is the county seat of Fulton County, and a small portion of the city extends eastward into DeKalb County. In 1837, Atlanta was founded at the intersection of two lines, and the city rose from the ashes of the American Civil War to become a national center of commerce. Atlantas economy is considered diverse, with dominant sectors that include logistics, professional and business services, media operations, Atlanta has topographic features that include rolling hills and dense tree coverage. Revitalization of Atlantas neighborhoods, initially spurred by the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, has intensified in the 21st century, altering the demographics, politics. Prior to the arrival of European settlers in north Georgia, Creek Indians inhabited the area, standing Peachtree, a Creek village located where Peachtree Creek flows into the Chattahoochee River, was the closest Indian settlement to what is now Atlanta. As part of the removal of Native Americans from northern Georgia from 1802 to 1825, the Creek ceded the area in 1821. In 1836, the Georgia General Assembly voted to build the Western, the initial route was to run southward from Chattanooga to a terminus east of the Chattahoochee River, which would then be linked to Savannah. After engineers surveyed various possible locations for the terminus, the zero milepost was driven into the ground in what is now Five Points. A year later, the area around the milepost had developed into a settlement, first known as Terminus, and later as Thrasherville after a merchant who built homes. By 1842, the town had six buildings and 30 residents and was renamed Marthasville to honor the Governors daughter, later, J. Edgar Thomson, Chief Engineer of the Georgia Railroad, suggested the town be renamed Atlantica-Pacifica, which was shortened to Atlanta. The residents approved, and the town was incorporated as Atlanta on December 29,1847, by 1860, Atlantas population had grown to 9,554. During the American Civil War, the nexus of multiple railroads in Atlanta made the city a hub for the distribution of military supplies, in 1864, the Union Army moved southward following the capture of Chattanooga and began its invasion of north Georgia. On the next day, Mayor James Calhoun surrendered Atlanta to the Union Army, on November 11,1864, Sherman prepared for the Union Armys March to the Sea by ordering Atlanta to be burned to the ground, sparing only the citys churches and hospitals. After the Civil War ended in 1865, Atlanta was gradually rebuilt, due to the citys superior rail transportation network, the state capital was moved from Milledgeville to Atlanta in 1868. In the 1880 Census, Atlanta surpassed Savannah as Georgias largest city, by 1885, the founding of the Georgia School of Technology and the citys black colleges had established Atlanta as a center for higher education. In 1895, Atlanta hosted the Cotton States and International Exposition, during the first decades of the 20th century, Atlanta experienced a period of unprecedented growth. Sports Division III is a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association of the United States. The division consists of colleges and universities that choose not to offer athletically related financial aid to their student-athletes, as explained in more detail in the article about NCAA Division II, the NCAAs first split was into two divisions. The former College Division formed because many NCAA member schools wanted an alternative to the nature of what is now Division I. Division III formed in 1973, in a split of the College Division, the former College Division members that chose to offer athletic scholarships or to remain in a division with those who did became Division II, while members that did not became Division III. Division III is the NCAA’s largest division with 438 active member institutions, of the member institutions, 81% are private, while only 19% are public. Division III schools range in size from an undergraduate enrollment of 348 to a maximum of 21,247. Division III institutions have to sponsor at least five sports for men and five for women, there are minimum contest and participant minimums for each sport. Division III athletic programs are non-revenue-generating, extracurricular programs that are staffed and funded like any other university department, hence, they feature student-athletes who receive no financial aid related to their athletic ability. Student athletes also cannot redshirt as freshmen, and schools may not use endowments or funds whose primary purpose is to benefit athletic programs, Division III schools shall not award financial aid to any student on the basis of athletics leadership, ability, participation or performance. The ban on scholarships is strictly enforced. S, an all-sports conference is defined here as one that sponsors both mens and womens basketball. A conference name followed by * denotes a conference also sponsors football. Six of them are grandfathered schools that have competed at the highest level of a particular mens sport prior to the institution of the Division classifications in 1971. Presumably due to Title IX considerations, grandfathered schools are allowed to field one womens sport in Division I. These schools are allowed to offer scholarships in their Division I mens and womens sports to remain competitive with their opponents. The State University of New York at Oneonta, which had been grandfathered in mens soccer, rutgers University–Newark, which had been grandfathered in mens volleyball, did the same in 2014. Academic-based and need-based financial aid is available, as is the case for Division III. Franklin and Marshall College Hobart College Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT also fields mens rowing, lawrence continues to field a fencing team, but that team is now considered Division III. Football and basketball may not be grandfathered Division I programs because their potential would give them an unfair advantage over other Division III schools

The Alabama Crimson Tide mens basketball team represents the University of Alabama in NCAA Division I mens basketball. The program has a history of being among the best of the Southeastern Conference, in the conference it trails only long-time basketball powerhouse Kentucky in basketball wins and SEC tournament titles, and is third behind Kentucky and LSU in SEC regular season conference titles. Alabama was retroactively recognized as the pre-NCAA Tournament national champion for the 1929–30 season by the Premo-Porretta Power Poll, the team is currently led by head coach Avery Johnson. The mens basketball program has spent most of its history in the shadow of Alabamas football team, under former coach Mark Gottfried, the team achieved a No.1 national ranking briefly in 2003, and competed for a NCAA Regional Tournament Championship in 2004. The program was notable as a conference basketball contender in the 1980s and early 1990s under the direction of coach Wimp Sanderson. Alabama has eight NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearances, in the 2003–04 season, the team defeated #1-seeded Stanford in the NCAA Tournament, and reached the Elite Eight round where they lost to the eventual national champion, Connecticut. Other coaches include John Dee, Floyd Burdette, and Charles A. Bernier, rupp recommended C. M. Newton, a former backup player at Kentucky who had been at Transylvania University for 12 years. In twelve seasons at Alabama, Newton led the Tide to a record of 211–123, the Crimson Tide won three straight SEC titles under Newton, the only program besides Kentucky to accomplish this feat. Newton also guided Alabama to four NIT and two NCAA Mens Division I Championship tournament berths, prompting the school to name a recruiting suite in his honor in 2006. Just as he did at Transylvania, Newton recruited Alabamas first black player, Wendell Hudson, in 1969, Newton resigned as head coach after the 1980–81 season to become assistant commissioner of the SEC. He was succeeded by his top assistant, Wimp Sanderson and he had been at Alabama since 1960 as a graduate assistant to Newtons predecessor, Hayden Riley, he was named a full-fledged assistant in 1961. In 12 years as head coach his teams averaged 21.8 wins a year, with a 267–119 record and they played in one NIT and eight NCAA tournaments making the Sweet 16 five times. Sanderson is the coach in Alabama history to win 200 or more games in his first 10 years. He was the SEC Coach of the Year in 1987,1989 and 1990, Sanderson was best known for wearing garish plaid sports jackets on the sidelines. At one point, Coleman Coliseum was known as the Plaid Palace, as an assistant, he had the opportunity to coach such All-SEC performers as Robert Horry, James Hollywood Robinson and Latrell Sprewell. When Sanderson left Alabama following the 1992 season, Hobbs was named head coach, in his first season, the Tide finished 16–13 and advanced to the NIT. In 1994 and 1995, Alabama recorded 20-win seasons and advanced to the NCAA Tournament behind the play of future NBA All-Star Antonio McDyess, in 1996, Hobbs led UA to a 19–13 mark and a berth in the NIT Final Four. He resigned his post following the 1998 season after compiling a 110–76 career record, Mark Gottfried served as the Crimson Tides head coach from the 1998–99 season until midway through the 2008–09 season

William Joseph Billy Kennedy, Jr. is the head mens basketball coach at Texas A&M University. He took over the vacated by Mark Turgeon in May 2011. He previously held the position at Murray State University for five seasons. Kennedy previously held the position at Centenary and Southeastern Louisiana. He has served 13 seasons as a head coach and 13 as an assistant. Kennedy is a 1986 graduate of Southeastern Louisiana and 1984 graduate of Delgado Community College in New Orleans and he played basketball and attended Holy Cross High School in New Orleans. After serving 12 years as an assistant coach, including the four at California. There, he took over a program that had won only 30 games in the three seasons. His first team won 10 games but his second improved to a 14-14 overall record and his sixth team went 24-9, the most wins in school history, and won both the conference regular-season and tournament titles. The Lions advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history, the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, the Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches, and the National Association of Basketball Coaches selected Kennedy coach of the year in 2004 and 2005. Kennedy resigned from his position at Southeastern Louisiana to become the head coach at Miami. After serving one season as an assistant at Miami, Kennedy was named Murray States 14th mens basketball coach in 2006, taking over a team with only one returning starter, he led the Racers to a 16-14 season and second-place finish in the Ohio Valley Conference. His next two squads won 18 and 19 games, again placing second in the conference regular-season standings and his fourth team at Murray State won more games than any in school history, reaching the second round of the NCAA tournament. During the season, the Racers won a school record 17 games in a row before losing 70-65 at Morehead State University on February 25,2010. The Racers finished the season with a 31-5 record, including a 17-1 conference mark, Kennedy was named 2010 OVC and National Association of Basketball Coaches coach of the year. In 2010-11, Kennedys Racers repeated as OVC regular-season champions but fell in the tournament semifinals. As OVC regular-season champions, Murray State earned a berth in the National Invitation Tournament where it lost 89-76 at Missouri State to finish with a 23-9 season record, Kennedy was again selected OVC coach of the year. In 1839, the Mississippi Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, established Centenary College, first located in Clinton, Mississippi, when the College of Louisiana lost the financial support from the state legislature in 1845, Centenary College purchased the facility and moved to Jackson. In 1846, the trustees changed the institution’s name to Centenary College of Louisiana. This prosperity halted with the American Civil War, following a meeting on October 7,1861, the faculty minute book states, “Students have all gone to war. College suspended, and God help the right. ”During the war, Centenary reopened in the fall of 1865, though struggled financially through the remainder of the nineteenth century. In 1906, the Louisiana Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, the Jackson campus now serves as the Centenary State Historic Site operated by the Louisiana Office of State Parks, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Centenary opened in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1909, enrollment and course offerings increased during the 1920s, and Centenary received accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1925. During the 1920s and 1930s, the football program earned fame for defeating such teams as Baylor, LSU, Rice, SMU. The Centenary College Choir, formed in 1941, began performing throughout the region, in 1942, Centenary acquired a satellite campus, the former Dodd College, which served as a pre-flight training facility for air force cadets. Centenary Colleges campus spans sixty-five acres and is located two miles south of downtown Shreveport, the Dr. Ed Leuck Academic Arboretum, located in the heart of campus, is home to more than 300 species of plant life. The Anderson building also contains a practice room and atrium. The Chapel was renovated and rededicated in January 2003 and hosts religious services, Bynum Memorial Commons, the cafeteria, built in 1956, was named in 1974 to honor Robert Jesse Bynum, New Orleans businessman and benefactor of the College. Southeastern Louisiana University is a state-funded public university in Hammond, Louisiana, United States. It was founded in 1925 by Linus A. Sims, the principal of Hammond High School, as Hammond Junior College, Sims succeeded in getting the campus moved to north Hammond in 1928, when it became known as Southeastern Louisiana College. It achieved university status in 1970, enrolled are 14,594 students representing 43 states and 66 countries. During the 1990s Southeastern was the college in the United States. The university is the third largest in Louisiana, trailing only LSU, southeasterns colors are green and gold, and the mascot is the Lions. Southeasterns sports teams participate in NCAA Division I in the Southland Conference, the Hammond campus is located 45 miles east of Baton Rouge and 60 miles northwest of New Orleans. What began as a college supported by local taxes developed into a major university as Southeastern has grown to meet the evolving needs of southeast Louisiana. On July 7,1925, the voters approved a bond issue that created Hammond Junior College. Operated under the auspices of the Tangipahoa Parish School Board, Sims opened the doors on September 13,1925, the two-year coeducational institution offered basic undergraduate work in arts and sciences that culminated in a teaching certificate. Rapidly increasing enrollments quickly forced the college out of its two rooms in Hammond High School, in 1927, voters supported the purchase of the Hunter Leake estate on Hammond’s north end. In 1928, Hammond Junior College became Southeastern Louisiana College, formally adopted into the educational system under the control of the State Board of Education. The purchase of 60 acres adjoining the original 15-acre plot provided the space to develop a suitable campus, in 1934, a state bond issue provided for the construction of McGehee Hall and a gymnasium. Lucius McGehee Hall was built in 1935, as of 2009 it is the oldest building constructed by the University. McGehee Hall is on the National Register of Historic Places, in 1937, the State Board of Education authorized curricula for four-year programs in liberal arts, teacher education, business administration, music, social sciences, and physical education. The first baccalaureate degrees were conferred in May 1939, voter approval of Act 388 in 1938, an amendment to the 1920 Louisiana Constitution, granted Southeastern Louisiana College the same legal status as other four-year colleges. The amendment did not, however, require the state to fund Southeastern at the level of institutions of higher education. The school was founded as a medical college in 1834. The institution was privatized under the endowments of Paul Tulane and Josephine Louise Newcomb in 1884, Tulane is the 9th oldest private university in the Association of American Universities, which consists of major research universities in the United States and Canada. The Tulane University Law School and Tulane University Medical School are considered the 12th oldest and 15th oldest law and medical schools, respectively, members of Congress, heads of Federal agencies, two Surgeon Generals of the United States, U. At least two Nobel laureates have been affiliated with the University, the university was founded as the Medical College of Louisiana in 1834 partly as a response to the fears of smallpox, yellow fever, and cholera in the United States. The university became only the medical school in the South. In 1847, the legislature established the school as the University of Louisiana, a public university. Subsequently, in 1851, the university established its first academic department, the first president chosen for the new university was Francis Lister Hawks, an Episcopalian priest and prominent citizen of New Orleans at the time. The university was closed from 1861 to 1865 during the American Civil War, after reopening, it went through a period of financial challenges because of an extended agricultural depression in the South which affected the nations economy. The Vanderbilt Commodores mens basketball team represents Vanderbilt University in the Southeastern Conference. The Commodores have won three SEC regular season titles and two SEC Tournament championships and they have competed in thirteen NCAA Tournaments, making it to the Elite Eight once and the Sweet Sixteen six times. Vanderbilt has played in eleven National Invitation Tournaments, winning it in 1990, the Commodores play their home games in Memorial Gymnasium. Memorial Gymnasium was built in the early 1950s and it was dedicated as the campus memorial to students and alumni killed in World War II, a plaque commemorating those who died is displayed in the Gyms North lobby. Consequently, the floor was built up above its surroundings. This necessitated the placement of the benches at the end of the court, in addition, each goal was anchored by two far-reaching beams attached to support columns, with extra support coming from cables stretching all the way to the gyms ceiling. 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament

It began on March 16,2010, and concluded with the championship game on April 5 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, to become champion. It was the first Final Four at Lucas Oil Stadium, the RCA Dome, when Duke and Butler played each other in the tournament final, it was the first title game between private universities in 25 years, and the fifth such matchup in history. Duke defeated Butler 61-59 in the game as Gordon Haywards last second desperation shot clanged off the rim. It was Dukes first national championship since 2001 and fourth overall, entering the tournament, the top four seeds were Kansas, Duke, Kentucky, and Syracuse. Kansas entered the tournament as the number one seed but were defeated on opening weekend by Northern Iowa. Northern Iowa was one of four teams seeded lower than #8 to advance to the Sweet Sixteen, joining East Region #11 seed Washington and #12 seed Cornell and South Region #10 seed Saint Marys. For the first time since 2006, a #14 seed advanced out of the first round as Ohio defeated Georgetown in the sub-regionals at Dunkin Donuts Center. The #13 seed in the West Region, Murray State, defeated Vanderbilt marking the second appearance for the Commodores where they lost as a #4 seed. Murray State very nearly upset Butler in their game, losing by two. One of the more exciting games of the tournament was played at the West Regional in Salt Lake City, Jordan Crawford hit a three-pointer with seconds remaining in the first overtime period to force a second. A total of 65 teams were selected for the tournament, thirty one of the teams earned automatic bids by winning their conference tournaments. The automatic bid of the Ivy League, which does not conduct a tournament, went to Cornell. The remaining 34 teams were granted at-large bids, which are extended by the NCAA Selection Committee. Two teams play a game, popularly called the play-in game. The 2010 game was played on March 16 at University of Dayton Arena in Dayton, Ohio, the University of Dayton hosted the game. All 64 teams are seeded 1 to 16 within their regions, the Selection Committee seeds the entire field from 1 to 65. UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero took over as chair of the Division I Mens Basketball Committee, Conference USA champion Houston made its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 18 years. The Texas A&M Aggies mens basketball team represents Texas A&M University in NCAA Division I college basketball. The Aggies play home games at Reed Arena, a 12, 989-capacity arena in College Station, Texas on the campus of Texas A&M University. In the 2006-07 season, Texas A&M was the program in the Big 12 Conference to have both mens and womens teams competing in the NCAA Tournament - the men as a 3 seed. The mens basketball received a number 3 seed in the 2015-16 season as well. Shelby Metcalf took over the A&M basketball program in 1963 and his impact was immediate, winning the Southwest Conference with a 13-1 conference record for Texas A&Ms first title in 13 years. In his 26 years as coach at Texas A&M, he won six Southwest Conference titles. He was fired by former A&M football player and then-athletic director John David Crow after coaching 19 games of the 1989-1990 season, when asked by the media what happened between the two, Metcalf remarked, I made a comment that I didnt think John David was all that bright. And I thought I was being generous, Metcalf finished his career at A&M with an overall record of 438–306, making him the all-time winningest mens basketball coach in Southwest Conference history. John Thornton finished out the 1990 season as coach after Metcalf was fired. Soon after, Kermit Davis, Jr. was hired prior to the 1990–91 season and he resigned after one season at 8–21 and Texas A&M began investigating recruiting violations by Davis. He was soon placed on a two-year probation by the NCAA, tony Barone was hired from Creighton in 1991 to replace Davis. Barone lasted seven years as coach of the program, finishing below.500 six times. It was in 1994 that he finished with a 10–4 league record for 2nd place in the Southwest Conference and was invited to the NIT, after Barone finished last in the Big 12 Conference in 1998, Melvin Watkins was hired out of UNC-Charlotte. While a good recruiter, Watkins never finished above seventh in the Big 12 and he resigned after going winless in conference play in 2004. The Aggies, though picked by Big 12 coaches to finish last in the conference, immediately improved under Gillispie, winning their first 10 games and finishing at 21–10, along the way, the team defeated ranked, in-state rivals Texas and Texas Tech. The team earned an NIT bid, Texas A&Ms first postseason in 11 years, Gillispies second year featured further improvement, with the Aggies defeating three ranked opponents in Colorado, Texas, and Syracuse. The team finished with a record of 10–6 and a win in the Big 12 Tournament. Fredrick Kristian Fred Hoiberg is an American professional basketball coach and former player. He currently serves as coach for the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association. Previously, Hoiberg was the basketball head coach for Iowa State University in Ames. Hoiberg grew up in Ames, Iowa, and played basketball at Iowa State. He then played basketball for ten years and served as vice president for basketball operations for the Minnesota Timberwolves before beginning his coaching career. Hoiberg, an athlete, was the quarterback of the football team. He led his team to a state championship in 1991. He chose to play basketball for his hometown Iowa State Cyclones, then of the Big Eight Conference and he played three seasons for coach Johnny Orr and one season for Tim Floyd. Hoiberg was a First-Team All-Big Eight selection in 1995, in college, he was known as an all-around player, capable of making clutch shots in important situations. While at Iowa State, Hoiberg joined Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, Hoiberg obtained the nickname The Mayor after receiving several write-in votes during the 1993 Ames, Iowa mayoral race. On April 27,2010, Iowa State University announced that Hoiberg would take over as head coach, replacing Greg McDermott. The Chicago Bulls are an American professional basketball team based in Chicago. The Bulls compete in the National Basketball Association as a club of the leagues Eastern Conference Central Division. The team was founded on January 16,1966, the team plays its home games at the United Center, an arena shared with the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League. The Bulls saw their greatest success during the 1990s and they are known for having one of the NBAs greatest dynasties, winning six NBA championships between 1991 and 1998 with two three-peats. All six championship teams were led by Hall of Famers Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, the Bulls are the only NBA franchise to win multiple championships and never lose an NBA Finals series in their history. The Bulls won 72 games during the 1995–96 NBA season, setting an NBA record that stood until the Golden State Warriors won 73 games during the 2015–16 NBA season. The Bulls were the first team in NBA history to win 70 games or more in a season. Many experts and analysts consider the 1996 Bulls to be one of the greatest teams in NBA history, Michael Jordan and Derrick Rose have both won the NBA Most Valuable Player Award while playing for the Bulls, for a total of six MVP awards. The Bulls share rivalries with the Detroit Pistons, New York Knicks, Miami Heat, the Bulls rivalry with the Pistons was highlighted heavily during the late 1980s and early 1990s. On January 16,1966 Chicago was granted an NBA franchise to be called the Bulls, the Chicago Bulls became the third NBA franchise in the city, after the Chicago Stags and the Chicago Packers/Zephyrs. The Bulls founder, Dick Klein, was the Bulls only owner to play professional basketball. He served as the Bulls president and general manager in their initial years, after the 1966 NBA Expansion Draft, the newly founded Chicago Bulls were allowed to acquire players from the previously established teams in the league for the upcoming 1966–67 season. The team started in the 1966–67 NBA season, and posted the best record by a team in NBA history. In their first two seasons, the Bulls played most of their games at the International Amphitheatre, before moving to Chicago Stadium. Fan interest was diminishing after four seasons, with one game in the 1967–68 NBA season having an attendance of 891. The Bulls under Williams and head coach Dick Motta qualified for four straight playoffs and had attendances grow to over 10,000, in 1972, the Bulls set a franchise win-loss record at 57 wins and 25 losses. During the 1970s, the Bulls relied on Jerry Sloan, forwards Bob Love and Chet Walker, point guard Norm Van Lier, the team made the conference finals in 1975 but lost to the Golden State Warriors,4 games to 3. The championship game was the first to be contested in a Western state since 1995 when Seattle, Washington, was the host of the Final Four for that year. A total of 68 teams entered the 2017 tournament, with all 32 conference tournament winners receiving an automatic bid, the Ivy League, which previously granted its automatic tournament bid to its regular season champion, hosted a postseason tournament to determine a conference champion for the first time. In previous years, had the Ivy League had two schools tied for first in the standings, a one-game playoff determined the automatic bid. On March 10,2016, the Ivy Leagues council of presidents approved a four-team tournament where the top four teams in the season would play on March 11 and 12 at Philadelphias Palestra. The remaining 36 teams received at-large bids which are extended by the NCAA Selection Committee. On January 24,2016, the NCAA announced that the Selection Committee would, for the first time, eight teams—the four lowest-seeded automatic qualifiers and the four lowest-seeded at-large teams—played in the First Four. The winners of these advanced to the main draw of the tournament. The Selection Committee also seeded the entire field from 1 to 68, hawaii had previously been banned from entering the tournament as a penalty for infractions, but the NCAA later reversed its ban. The following 32 teams were automatic qualifiers for the 2017 NCAA field by virtue of winning their conferences automatic bid. The Record column includes wins in the First Four for the Big 12, Big West, NEC, the MEAC and Southland each had one representative, both eliminated in the First Four with a record of 0–1. CBS Sports and Turner Sports have joint U. S. television broadcast rights to the Tournament under the NCAA March Madness brand. Since 2016, rights to the Final Four and championship game alternate between Turner in even-numbered years and CBS in odd-numbered years, meaning that both rounds will air on CBS in 2017. Following criticism of the format of the 2016 edition, the Selection Sunday broadcast was shortened to 90 minutes. The 2012 NCAA Division I Mens Basketball Tournament was a single-elimination tournament involving 68 schools playing to determine the national champion of mens NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 13,2012, and concluded with the game on April 2 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. Kentucky defeated Kansas 67-59 to win their first national championship since Tubby Smith led the team there in 1998 and this was Caliparis first national championship in four trips to the Final Four, having previously gone there with Kentucky in 2011, Memphis in 2008 and Massachusetts in 1996. Upsets were once again the story of the tournament in 2012, in the South Region, #15 Lehigh of the Patriot League defeated #2 Duke. In the West Region, #15 Norfolk State of the MEAC, making their first ever NCAA tournament appearance, defeated #2 Missouri. A team from the First Four games also won in the Round of 64 for the second year as South Florida defeated Midwest #5 seed Temple. Virginia Commonwealth, a Final Four team from 2011 as an #11 seed, made the 2012 tournament as a #12 seed, the South Region saw four double digit seeds win in their opening games, as Colorado and Xavier joined VCU and Lehigh as victors. Xavier advanced to the Sweet Sixteen, where they were defeated by Baylor, despite the upsets, all four top seeds advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2009. Three made it to the Elite Eight, as only Michigan State of the West Region lost, Kentucky was the only one to advance to the Final Four as Syracuse and North Carolina lost in their regional finals. Two teams made their first NCAA tournament appearances in history, MEAC champion Norfolk State. Ivy League champion Harvard made its first appearance since 1946, all four teams from the state of Ohio made it to the Sweet 16, marking the first time in tournament history any state has been represented by four teams in the round of 16. This tournament was also the first tournament since 1985 to feature no teams in the Sweet 16 from the Mountain or Pacific Time Zones and it is also the first tournament ever that both national semifinals and the national championship game were regular season rematches. A total of 68 teams entered the tournament, thirty out of 31 automatic bids were given to the teams that won their conference tournament. The remaining automatic bid was awarded to the Ivy League regular season champion since they do not hold a conference tournament, the remaining 37 teams were granted at-large bids, which were extended by the NCAA Selection Committee on March 11. Eight teams—the four lowest-seeded automatic qualifiers and the four lowest-seeded at-large teams—will play in the First Four, the winners of these games will advance to the main draw of the tournament.
