U.S. Route 6

U. S. Route 6, also called the Grand Army of the Republic Highway, honoring the American Civil War veterans association, is a main route of the U. S. Highway system. While it currently runs east-northeast from Bishop, California to Provincetown, Massachusetts, the highways longest-lasting routing, from 1936 to 1964, had its western terminus at Long Beach, California. During this time, US6 was the longest highway in the country, in 1964, the state of California renumbered its highways, and most of the route within California was transferred to other highways. This dropped the highways length below that of US20, US6 is a diagonal route, whose number is out of sequence with the rest of the U. S. Highway grid in the western US. When it was designated in 1926, US6 only ran east of Erie, subsequent extensions, largely replacing the former U. S. Route 32 and U. S. US6 does not serve a major corridor, unlike other highways. George R. Stewart, author of U. S, the modern US6 in California is a short, two-lane, north–south surface highway from Bishop to the Nevada state line. Prior to a 1964 highway renumbering project, US6 extended to Long Beach along what is now US395, California 14, Interstate 5, Interstate 110/California 110, despite the renumbering having removed all freeway portions, it is still part of the California Freeway and Expressway System. US 6s former routing included a segment of the famous Arroyo Seco Parkway. Currently, US6 begins at US395 in Bishop and heads north between farms and ranches in the Chalfant Valley at the base of the 14, 000-foot western escarpment of the White Mountains, after about 30 miles Benton is reached, which has a cafe and gas station. California 120 begins here, heading west past Mono Lake through Lee Vining, over Tioga Pass, US6 continues north to the Nevada state line. From the California border, US6 heads northeast through semi-desert Queen Valley with Boundary Peak, Nevadas highest summit and these twin peaks are the northernmost high summits of the White Mountains, both over 13,000 ft. The highway then climbs into the Pinyon-Juniper zone and crosses Montgomery Pass 7,167 ft, from the pass, US6 descends into barren shadscale desert, passing Columbus Salt Marsh on the left, then merging with US95 from Coaldale Junction to Tonopah. Nevada Test and Training Range begins about 15 mi southeast of Tonopah, just east of Tonopah, US6 continues east across a series of desert mountain ranges and valleys, including the Monitor Range. Rainfall increases eastward, so become less barren and peaks over 11,500 ft add scenic interest. Ely is the largest town on Route 6 in Nevada, US50 joins Route 6 at Ely. East of Ely, Routes 6/50 cross the Schell Creek Range, known for verdant forests and meadows, and for a large deer and elk population. The highway descends to Spring Valley, then crosses the Snake Range at Sacramento Pass, north of Nevadas second-highest mountain, Wheeler Peak, beyond the pass, US6 passes just north of Baker, a Mormon farming community, and reaches the Utah state line

Hammer, who was appointed in October 2015, the agency that became NJDOT began as the New Jersey State Highway Department circa 1920. NJDOT was established in 1966 as the first State transportation agency in the United States, the Transportation Act of 1966 established the NJDOT on December 12,1966. In 1979, with the establishment of New Jersey Transit, NJDOTs rail division was folded into the new agency, until 2003, the NJDOT included the Division of Motor Vehicles, which was reorganized as the self-operating New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Hamilton Township, Mercer County, New Jersey

Hamilton Township is a township in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The township was the states 9th-largest municipality, after having been ranked 10th in 2000, the township is located immediately east of the city of Trenton, the states capital. Hamilton was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 11,1842, portions of the township were taken to form Chambersburg borough and Wilbur borough. Hamilton Township derives its name from the village of Hamilton Square, in 2006, Hamilton Township was ranked by Morgan Quitno as the eighteenth-safest city in the United States, out of 369 cities nationwide. In the companys 2005 survey, the Township was ranked 15th safest of 354 cities surveyed nationwide. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township had an area of 40.387 square miles. Although Hamilton is one of the largest townships in New Jersey it doesnt have a true downtown, groveville, Hamilton Square, Mercerville, White Horse and Yardville are all census-designated places and unincorporated communities located within the township. Van Nest Wildlife Refuge is a 98-acre wildlife management area operated by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protections Division of Fish, as of late 2005, much of the new residential development in Hamilton has been geared to accommodating the aging baby boomer generation. New retirement communities and assisted-living facilities outpace that of new residential communities. Such construction has been spurred by several factors, the first being that the public is skeptical of growing school budgets due to its already large size. Hamilton voters have often rejected increases in school budgets in their elections to keep already high taxes from growing higher. As a result, the board has been reluctant to authorize construction of housing that will increase the student population. Another reason is a series of improvements to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, the hospital is now a highly respected source of care in the state. It is situated next to where most of the land in the township used to be. As of October 2016, significant construction has been done to build up the Hamilton Township area. Multiple new retirement communities have been constructed, as well as new restaurants, banks, gas stations. Hamilton Township continues to expand rapidly to accommodate the increase in citizens residing in the community, as of the census of 2010, there were 88,464 people,34,534 households, and 23,759 families residing in the township. Trenton, New Jersey

Trenton is the capital city of the U. S. state of New Jersey and the county seat of Mercer County. It was briefly the capital of the United States, as of the 2010 United States Census, Trenton had a population of 84,913, making it the states 10th-largest municipality. The Census Bureau estimated that the population was 84,034 in 2014. Trenton dates back at least to June 3,1719, when mention was made of a constable being appointed for Trenton, while the area was still part of Hunterdon County. Boundaries were recorded for Trenton Township as of March 2,1720, a courthouse and jail were constructed in Trenton around 1720, Trenton became New Jerseys capital as of November 25,1790, and the City of Trenton was formed within Trenton Township on November 13,1792. Trenton Township was incorporated as one of New Jerseys initial group of 104 townships by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21,1798, on February 22,1834, portions of Trenton Township were taken to form Ewing Township. The remaining portion of Trenton Township was absorbed by the City of Trenton on April 10,1837, portions of Ewing Township and Hamilton Township were annexed to Trenton on March 23,1900. The first settlement which would become Trenton was established by Quakers in 1679, in the then called the Falls of the Delaware, led by Mahlon Stacy from Handsworth, Sheffield. Quakers were being persecuted in England at this time and North America provided an opportunity to exercise their religious freedom, by 1719, the town adopted the name Trent-towne, after William Trent, one of its leading landholders who purchased much of the surrounding land from Stacys family. This name later was shortened to Trenton, during the American Revolutionary War, the city was the site of the Battle of Trenton, George Washingtons first military victory. On December 26,1776, Washington and his army, after crossing the icy Delaware River to Trenton, after the war, the Confederation Congress briefly met in Trenton in November and December 1784. Trenton became the capital in 1790, but prior to that year the New Jersey Legislature often met here. The city was incorporated in 1792, during the War of 1812, the United States Armys primary hospital was at a site on Broad Street. Throughout the 19th century, Trenton grew steadily, as European immigrants came to work in its pottery, in 1837, with the population now too large for government by council, a new mayoral government was adopted, with by-laws that remain in operation to this day. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city had an area of 8.155 square miles. Trenton is located near the geographic center of the state. However, Mercer County constitutes its own metropolitan area, formally known as the Trenton-Ewing MSA. Locals consider Trenton to be a part of an area called Central Jersey

Mercer County is a county located in the U. S. state of New Jersey. Its county seat is Trenton, the state capital, as of the 2016 Census estimate, the countys population was 371,023, making it the states 12th-most populous county, an increase of 1. The county was formed by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 22,1838, from portions of Burlington County, Hunterdon County, the old Keith Line bisects the county and is the boundary between municipalities that previously had been separated into West Jersey and East Jersey. It was named for Continental Army General Hugh Mercer, who died as a result of wounds received at the Battle of Princeton on January 3,1777. The Mercer Oak, against which the dying general rested as his men continued to fight, appears on the county seal and stood for 250 years until it collapsed in 2000. Founded February 22,1838, from portions of surrounding counties, on the night of December 25–26,1776, General George Washington led American forces across the Delaware River to attack the Hessian barracks in Trenton on the morning of December 26. Following the battle, Washington crossed back to Pennsylvania and he crossed a third time in a surprise attack on the forces of General Charles Cornwallis at the Second Battle of Trenton on January 2,1777, and at the Battle of Princeton on January 3. The successful attacks built morale among the pro-independence colonists, Mercer County has the distinction of being the famed landing spot for a fictional Martian invasion of the United States. In 1938, in what has one of the most famous American radio plays of all time. His imaginary aliens first landed at what is now West Windsor Township, a commemorative monument is erected at Grovers Mill park. There were 27 Mercer County residents killed during the September 11,2001 terrorist attacks in Lower Manhattan. A 10-foot long steel beam weighing one ton was given to the county by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in March 2011 and is now displayed at Mercer County Park. According to the 2010 Census, the county had an area of 228.89 square miles. The county is flat and low-lying on the inner coastal plain with a few hills closer to the Delaware River. Baldpate Mountain, near Pennington, is the highest hill, at 480 feet above sea level, the lowest point is at sea level along the Delaware. The population density was 1,632.2 per square mile, there were 143,169 housing units at an average density of 637.6 per square mile. The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission is a bistate, public agency charged with providing safe, dependable and efficient river crossings between Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The DRJTBC was established under legislation enacted in the two states in 1934, the federal Compact for the DRJTBC was first approved by Congress in 1935. The agencys jurisdiction stretches roughly 140 miles along the Delaware River, from the Philadelphia/Bucks County, the DRJTBC currently operates seven toll bridges and 13 toll-supported bridges. Revenues from the seven toll bridges subsidize the other bridges, the agency does not receive any state or federal tax revenues and relies solely on toll collections for its financing. In 2007, more than 141 million cars and trucks used the DRJTBCs network of Delaware River bridge crossings, the Commission charges a $1.00 cash auto toll on its toll bridges, as of July 1,2011. Truck tolls range from $5.85 to $28.00, depending on type, time of travel. The Commission is a member of the Interagency Group, a collaborative of toll-collection agencies that offer E-ZPass electronic toll collection services. In November 2013, The Commission voted to merge E-ZPass operations with the New Jersey E-ZPass Customer Service Center as a cost cutting measure, previously, the Commission had been the last agency in the Delaware Valley to implement a monthly service fee

Millstone Valley Scenic Byway

The New Jersey Scenic Byways system consists of roads in the U. S. state of New Jersey that have been recognized for their historical or natural qualities. The byway begins in Cape May Point, Cape May County, following CR629, CR606, CR626, Route 162, CR626, and Route 47. In Salem County, the byway follows CR623, CR658, CR624, CR625, CR661, Grieves Parkway, and South Front Street to Route 49 in Salem. At this point, a spur heads along Route 49, Freas Road, Supawna Road, Route 49, CR632, from Salem, the mainline continues along Route 49, Route 45, and CR540 to its northern terminus in Mannington Township. The Delaware River Scenic Byway follows Route 29 along the Delaware River between Trenton and Frenchtown and it provides scenic views of the Delaware River and passes through Washington Crossing State Park, Titusville, Lambertville, Stockton, and Raven Rock. This byway is part of the national program. The Millstone Valley Scenic Byway is a 25 mile historic scenic route located in the Millstone River Valley which lies in north central New Jersey. The byway offers a glimpse into the past where skirmishes between the militia and British troops played a key role in the American Revolutionary War. This byway has been designated by the National Scenic Byways Program of the Federal Highway Administration as of 2009, the route travels along County Route 533 on the west bank of the Millstone and County Route 603 on the rivers east side. The route loops back on the side at County Route 518. The Kingston Village Historic District and the Kingston Mill Historic District are both located in the area of Kingston. The Pine Barrens Byway consists of three routes run through the Pine Barrens in southern New Jersey. The northern route of the byway begins in Tuckerton in Ocean County and follows US9 and Stage Road into Burlington County, here, the Pine Barrens Byway splits into a longer northern loop and a shorter northern loop. The longer northern loop follows CR542 through Batsto into Mullica Township, the shorter northern loop follows CR563 into Mullica Township. The first leg of the loop begins at CR542 in Mullica Township, following CR643. From here, the leg of the northern loop follows CR563, CR624, Mill Street, Riverside Drive. US9, the Garden State Parkway into Burlington County, and US9 back to Tuckerton, the southern route of the byway begins in Corbin City, Atlantic County and follows CR611 and Route 50 into Tuckahoe, Cape May County. From here, the byway follows Route 49, CR632, and Route 49 to an intersection with CR548, where it splits into a southern loop

U.S. Route 30 in New Jersey

U. S. Route 30 is a U. S. highway running from Astoria, Oregon east to Atlantic City, New Jersey. Most of the route in New Jersey is known as the White Horse Pike and is four lanes wide, the road runs through mostly developed areas in Camden County, with surroundings becoming more rural as the road approaches Atlantic County. US30 runs through towns including Collingswood, Berlin, Hammonton, Egg Harbor City. Most of US30 in New Jersey follows the White Horse Pike, the segment of US30 past Route 43 into Atlantic City became Route 56 in 1938. In 1953, the highway designations were removed from US30. A freeway was proposed for US30 in Camden County during the late 1960s, running from Camden to Berlin, however, US30 crosses the Delaware River into New Jersey on the Ben Franklin Bridge from Philadelphia along with I-676 and the PATCO Speedline. This portion, formerly known as Bridge Approach Boulevard, is an example of a roadway designed for the automobile. Along Admiral Wilson Boulevard, the route passes under New Jersey Transits River Line and interchanges with CR537 before widening to eight lanes, the road runs east through urbanized sections of Camden along the north bank of the Cooper River, interchanging with CR608. After this interchange, US30 enters suburban Pennsauken Township and comes to the Airport Circle, which has been modified to include ramps. Here, US30 meets US130 and the terminus of Route 38 and turns south to form a concurrency with US130 on Crescent Boulevard. The road crosses the Cooper River into Collingswood, running to the east of Harleigh Cemetery before interchanging with CR561, at the former Collingswood Circle, US30 splits from US130 by heading south-southeast on two-lane, undivided White Horse Pike. The road passes homes and some businesses before crossing the Newton Creek into Oaklyn, US30 forms the border between Oaklyn to the west and Haddon Township to the east before heading into Audubon. At the border of Audubon and Haddon Heights, the route crosses CR551 Spur, in this town, the White Horse Pike reaches an intersection with Route 41 at a modified traffic circle and an interchange with I-295 within a close distance of each other in Barrington. At this point, the route is four wide, with a short divided portion immediately south of I-295. US30 continues into Lawnside, becoming an undivided road. It passes under the New Jersey Turnpike, but there is no interchange present between the two roads, past here, the road enters Magnolia, where it crosses CR544. Following this intersection, the route heads through Somerdale before turning more southeast, US30 entirely enters Stratford as it intersects CR673 and passes near the Lindenwold Station, which is a stop on New Jersey Transit’s Atlantic City Line and the terminus of the PATCO Speedline. The White Horse Pike turns back to the south-southeast and forms the border between Laurel Springs to the west and Lindenwold to the east before continuing fully into Lindenwold, the route later turns southeast and enters Clementon

New Jersey Route 54
–
Route 54 is a state highway located in Atlantic County in New Jersey, United States. It is considered to be an extension of U. S. Route 206, running 11.86 mi from an intersection with US206. The road passes through the center of Hammonton before running into rural areas and it intersects US322 and Route 73 in Folsom and the Atlantic City Expressway in Hammonton. What is now Route 54 was originally legislated in 1938 to run from US 30/US206 in Hammonton south to Main Road in Landis Township. The only part taken over as a highway and designated Route 54 was north of US40 in Buena. In 1953, Route 54 was defined onto its current alignment, a freeway was proposed along the Route 54 corridor in the late 1960s to connect the southern terminus of US206 in Hammonton to Route 55 in the Vineland/Millville area, it was eventually canceled. Route 54 begins at an intersection with US 40/County Route 557, known as Buena Hammonton Road, it proceeds north-northeast as a two-lane undivided road through agricultural areas, forming the border between Buena to the west and Buena Vista Township to the east. After fully entering Buena Vista Township and becoming 12th Street, the road reaches an intersection with CR690, at this point, Route 54 enters forested areas, with a few breaks for residences. Upon entering Folsom, the passes over a Conrail Shared Assets Operations railroad line before coming to a cloverleaf interchange with US322. After this interchange, the comes to a crossroads with Route 73. Following this intersection, Route 54 heads through a mix of woods and farm fields as it enters Hammonton, in the area of this interchange, the route is a four-lane divided highway. Past the Atlantic City Expressway, the two-lane undivided road comes to an intersection with CR559, from this point, Route 54 is lined with residences and businesses as it comes into downtown Hammonton. The road crosses New Jersey Transit’s Atlantic City Line immediately before a junction with CR561, after CR561, the route becomes Bellevue Avenue and encounters the western terminus of CR542. As the road leaves the area, the surroundings become more residential. Route 54 ends at an intersection with US30 and US206, by 1927, what is now Route 54 was an unnumbered, unpaved road connecting Buena to Hammonton. Route 54 was legislated in 1938 to run from US 30/Route 43 and US 206/Route 39 in Hammonton south along Lincoln Avenue to an intersection with Main Road in Landis Township, Cumberland County. The only portion of Route 54 that was taken over as a highway was north of the US 40/Route 48 intersection in Buena. The portion of Lincoln Avenue south of US40 remained a county route called CR25 in Cumberland County and CR55 and this road is presently both Cumberland and Atlantic CRs 655 and a part of Atlantic CR619

Hammonton, New Jersey

Hammonton is a town in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States, known as the Blueberry Capital of the World. It was incorporated as a town by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 5,1866, from portions of Hamilton Township and Mullica Township. It is located directly between Philadelphia and the town of Atlantic City, along a former route of the Pennsylvania Railroad that is used by NJ Transits Atlantic City Line. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town had an area of 41.419 square miles. It is located in the Atlantic Coastal Plain, so is largely flat, the town is located almost exactly halfway between Philadelphia and Atlantic City. Due to its location in the Pine Barrens, the soil is largely sandy, low, marshy areas, often within the Pine Barrens are also used for cranberry cultivation. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Hammontons climate is abbreviated Cfa on climate maps, as of the census of 2010, there were 14,791 people,5,408 households, and 3,759 families residing in the town. The population density was 361.8 per square mile, there were 5,715 housing units at an average density of 139.8 per square mile. The racial makeup of the town was 81. 67% White,3. 00% Black or African American,0. 28% Native American,1. 37% Asian,0. 01% Pacific Islander,10. 81% from other races, and 2. 85% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 20. 93% of the population,25. 0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12. 6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the family size was 3.19. In the town, the population was out with 23. 4% under the age of 18,8. 2% from 18 to 24,26. 4% from 25 to 44,26. 1% from 45 to 64. The median age was 39.6 years, for every 100 females there were 99.0 males. For every 100 females ages 18 and old there were 95.2 males, the Census Bureaus 2006-2010 American Community Survey showed that median household income was $59,085 and the median family income was $62,354. Males had an income of $47,110 versus $36,615 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $25,292, about 8. 4% of families and 10. 2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13. 1% of those under age 18 and 9. 2% of those age 65 or over. New Jersey Route 70
–
Route 70 is a state highway located in the U. S. state of New Jersey. It extends 59.84 mi from an interchange with Route 38 in Pennsauken Township, Camden County to an intersection with Route 34 and Route 35 in Wall Township, Monmouth County. Route 70 cuts across the middle of the state as a highway through the Pine Barrens in Burlington. The western section in Cherry Hill and Marlton is a four to eight-lane divided highway that serves as a suburban arterial, as such. It is locally known as the Marlton Pike, the eastern section in Monmouth and Ocean counties is also a multilane divided highway that runs through suburban areas. Route 70 is officially known as the John Davison Rockefeller Memorial Highway its entire length in honor of John Davison Rockefeller, the portion of the current route between Whitesbog and Lakehurst became a part of pre-1927 Route 18 in 1923. In 1927, Route 40 was legislated to run from Camden to Lakewood, the termini were moved to the Airport Circle in Pennsauken. Route 40 became Route 70 in 1953 in order to avoid conflicting with U. S. Route 70 begins at an interchange with Route 38 and County Route 601 in Pennsauken Township, Camden County. From this interchange, it heads to the southeast on Marlton Pike, the road is also officially called the John Davison Rockefeller Memorial Highway for its entire length after John Davison Rockefeller. The road enters Cherry Hill and comes to an interchange with CR636 before crossing under New Jersey Transits Atlantic City Line. In this area, Route 70 passes to the south of the site of the Garden State Park before crossing CR644. Past this intersection, the narrows to four lanes and turns more to as it comes to the Ellisburg area. In Ellisburg, it has an intersection with Route 41 and the terminus of Route 154. The road runs through suburban areas as it encounters Interstate 295 at another cloverleaf interchange. A short distance past I-295, Route 70 passes over the New Jersey Turnpike without an interchange before widening into a highway and continuing east to junctions with CR674. Following CR673, the road back to four lanes before it encounters CR600. Route 70 crosses the Pennsauken Creek into Evesham Township, Burlington County, a short distance later, the route intersects Route 73 at an interchange that was formerly the Marlton Circle. It continues into a mix of development and rural woods and farms as it crosses into Medford Township

Southampton Township is a township in Burlington County, New Jersey, United States. What is now Southampton was originally incorporated as Coaxen Township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 10,1845, the name lasted for about three weeks when it was renamed Southampton Township on April 1,1845. Portions of the township were taken to form Pemberton Township, Shamong Township, Lumberton Township, Woodland Township and Tabernacle Township. According to the United States Census Bureau, Southampton Township had an area of 44.224 square miles. The township is located within the New Jersey Pine Barrens, leisuretowne is an unincorporated community and census-designated place located within Southampton Township. The township borders Eastampton Township, Lumberton Township, Medford Township, Pemberton Township, Tabernacle Township, as of the census of 2010, there were 10,464 people,4,746 households, and 3,042 families residing in the township. The population density was 239.6 per square mile, there were 5,024 housing units at an average density of 115.1 per square mile. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2. 15% of the population,32. 3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 22. 9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the family size was 2.77. Interstate 95 in New Jersey

Interstate 95 is a major Interstate Highway that traverses nearly the full extent of the East Coast of the United States, from Florida to Maine, with the exception of a small gap in New Jersey.96 mi. There is also a segment of I-95 to the north of Trenton that is 8.77 mi and connects the Scudder Falls Bridge to I-295 and U. S. Route 1, as implied by the two segments listed above, I-95 is discontinuous within New Jersey. From the Pennsylvania direction, I-95 enters New Jersey on the Scudder Falls Bridge and halts at the US1 interchange, here, I-95 would follow present-day I-287 to the New Jersey Turnpike in Edison. The current I-95 around the side of Trenton to the new interchange will become an extension of I-295. This interchange is expected to open in 2018, allowing a most direct route from New York City to downtown Philadelphia. This bridge is wide and is maintained by the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission. From this point, I-95 continues south into Bucks County, Pennsylvania towards Philadelphia, immediately after the river, the freeway comes to the Route 29 interchange that also has a northbound entrance from Route 175. Past this interchange, I-95 becomes maintained by the New Jersey Department of Transportation and widens to six lanes, the next interchange along the route provides access to CR579 and the Trenton-Mercer Airport. After CR579, the passes to the northwest of the airport before coming into Hopewell Township. A cloverleaf interchange with CR611 also serves the Trenton-Mercer Airport, I-95 turns east, passing through Ewing Township again before coming back into Hopewell Township and reaching the Route 31 interchange. The median of the freeway widens as it runs near residential areas. This is where the Somerset Freeway would have begun had it been built, upon entering Lawrence Township, the median narrows and I-95 has a southbound exit and northbound entrance serving Federal City Road. Continuing east, the road reaches an interchange with US206. After US206, I-95 comes to a ramp to CR546 before coming to a partial cloverleaf interchange at Princeton Pike. From this point, the freeway passes commercial areas before reaching an interchange at US1. From the river, I-95 follows the six-lane Pearl Harbor Memorial Extension of the New Jersey Turnpike east into New Jersey. This road, which is maintained by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, is not signed as part of I-95, continuing east through rural areas into Florence Township, the highway has an interchange serving US130. New Jersey Turnpike

The New Jersey Turnpike, colloquially known to New Jerseyans as the Turnpike, is a toll road in New Jersey, maintained by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. According to the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association, the Turnpike is the nations sixth-busiest toll road and is one of the most heavily traveled highways in the United States and its northern terminus is located at the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee, Bergen County. The Turnpike is a major thoroughfare providing access to localities in New Jersey, as well as Delaware, Pennsylvania. The route divides into four roadways between exit 6 and exit 14, with the inner lanes restricted to carrying only cars, and with the outer lanes for cars, trucks and buses. The northern part of the turnpike, along with the entirety of its extensions and spurs, is part of the Interstate Highway System. South of exit 6, it has the unsigned Route 700 designation, construction of the mainline from conceptualization to completion took 23 months, from 1950 to 1952. It was officially opened to traffic in November 1951, between its terminus and exit 10. The Interstate Highway System took some of its design guidelines by copying the Turnpikes design guidelines, to some degree, the Turnpike is considered iconic in pop culture, having been referenced in music, film and television. The main road of the New Jersey Turnpike splits from I-295 in Carneys Point Township and runs a north-northeast route to Ridgefield Park and it is designated Route 700, an unsigned route, from exit 1 to exit 6, and as I-95 from exit 6 to exit 18. The number of ranges from 4 lanes south of exit 4,6 lanes between exit 4 and exit 6,12 lanes between exit 6 and exit 11, and 14 lanes between exit 11 and exit 14. None of these state highway designations have ever been signed, specifically, starting in Mansfield Township, the Turnpike has a total of 12 lanes,6 in each direction. From Woodbridge Township to Newark, High-occupancy vehicle lanes exist on the outer roadway, thereby making it 7 lanes in each direction. The HOV lanes are in effect on weekdays, from 6,00 a. m. –9,00 a. m. northbound, north of exit 14, the Turnpike splits into two spurs, the Eastern Spur and the Western Spur. Both spurs are signed as I-95, the Western Spur is posted for through traffic on I-95 seeking Interstate 280, the Meadowlands Sports Complex, and the George Washington Bridge. Traffic seeking U. S. Route 46, Interstate 80, the New Jersey Department of Transportation, which calls every class of highway Route, calls the Western Spur Route 95W. It connects Newark with Lower Manhattan via the Holland Tunnel in Jersey City and this extension contains three exits and due to its design, it has a 50 mph speed limit. A 6-mile long six-lane highway, it not only connects the Pennsylvania Turnpike with the mainline and it was formerly designated as Route 700P, but is currently designated I-95 in anticipation of the completion of the Pennsylvania Turnpike/Interstate 95 Interchange Project in 2018. A 4-mile stretch of I-95 north of U. S.46 came under Turnpike Authority jurisdiction in 1992 and this section of the road travels past the interchange for I-80 and through a cut in the Hudson Palisades at GWB Plaza

Bordentown, New Jersey

Bordentown is a city in Burlington County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 3,924. The population declined by 45 from the 3,969 counted in the 2000 U. S. Census, Bordentown is located at the confluence of the Delaware River, Blacks Creek and Crosswicks Creek. The latter is the border between Burlington and Mercer Counties, Bordentown is 5.8 miles southeast from Trenton and 25.3 miles northeast of Philadelphia. Bordentown was originally incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on December 9,1825 and it was reincorporated as a city on April 3,1867, and separated from Chesterfield Township c. Thomas Farnsworth, an English Quaker, was credited with being the first European settler in the Bordentown area in 1682 and he made a new home on the windswept bluff overlooking the broad bend in the Delaware River. The Farnsworths cabin was situated near the northwest corner of Park Street and Prince Street, Farnsworth Landing soon became the center of trade for the region. Farnsworth is also the namesake of one of Bordentowns main street, Joseph Borden, for whom the city is named, arrived in 1717, and by May 1740 founded a transportation system to carry people and freight between New York City and Philadelphia. This exploited Bordentowns natural location as the point on the Delaware River that provided the shortest overland route to Perth Amboy, from which cargo, by 1776, Bordentown was full of patriots. Patience Lovell Wright, Americas first female sculptor, was creating wax busts in King Georges court in England, later, however, Bordentown became a rabble-rousing hotbed. In addition to Joseph Bordens son, who became a colonel during the war, patriots Francis Hopkinson, Colonel Kirkbride, Colonel Oakey Hoagland, due to their well-published activity in Bordentown, the British retaliated. Hessians occupied the town in 1776, and the British pillaged and razed the town during May, other notable people who have lived in the city include Clara Barton, who in 1852 started the first free public school in New Jersey and later founded the American Red Cross. A recreation of her stands at the corner of Crosswicks. The Bordentown School operated from 1894 to 1955 and he lived there for 17 years, entertaining guests of great fame such as Henry Clay, Daniel Webster and the future 6th U. S. President, John Quincy Adams. The residents of Bordentown nicknamed the Count, The Good Mr. Bonaparte and he built a lake near the mouth of Crosswicks Creek that was about 200 yards wide and half a mile long. On the bluff above it he built a new home, Point Breeze, the current Divine Word Mission occupies its former site along Park Street. Today only vestiges of the Bonaparte estate remain, in addition to the rubble of this mansion and some hedges of its elaborate gardens, only the original tunnel to the river and the house of Bonapartes secretary remain. Many descendants of Joachim Murat, King of Naples, also were born or lived in Bordentown, after the Bonaparte dynasty was restored by Napoleon III, they moved back to France and were recognized as princes

U.S. Route 130

U. S. Route 130 is a north–south U. S. Highway completely within the state of New Jersey. The route briefly runs concurrent with its parent US30 near Camden, US130 passes through many towns including Penns Grove, Bridgeport, Westville, Camden, Pennsauken, Burlington, Bordentown, Hightstown, and North Brunswick. The current route between Penns Grove and Westville was to become pre-1927 Route 17S in 1923, in 1926, US130 was designated to run from US30 in Camden to US1 in Trenton along the alignment of pre-1927 Route 2. A year later, the alignment of US130 became Route 25 between Camden and Bordentown, Route 39 between Bordentown and White Horse, and Route 37 between White Horse and Trenton. US130 was extended to Pennsville in 1938 along Route 45 and Route 44 while it was realigned to follow Route 25, in 1953, the state highways running concurrent with US130 were removed. Around the time of the renumbering, limited-access bypasses for US130 were built around Carneys Point, in the 1960s, I-295 was designated onto most of these freeway alignments of US130, which was moved back to its original route in Carneys Point. In 1969, the end of US130 was cut back to its current location. The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission had proposed a US130 freeway between Camden and Burlington, but it was never built, US 130s south end is in Pennsville Township, Salem County at the east end of the Delaware Memorial Bridge, which carries I-295 and US40. The New Jersey Turnpike begins at this interchange, and Route 49 heads south, from here, the route heads northeast on Shell Road, a two-lane undivided road, passing development before entering Carneys Point Township. In Carneys Point Township, the road intersects the west end of Route 140 before passing to the east of a DuPont plant and a Conrail Shared Assets Operations railroad yard near wooded areas. Past the Route 48 intersection, the road enters Carneys Point Township again, upon entering Oldmans Township, US130 heads through more rural areas as Bridgeport-Penns Grove Road. After crossing Oldmans Creek on a drawbridge, the route enters Logan Township, Gloucester County and it heads east-northeast through Nortonville before continuing through marshland and woodland. At this point, a section of US130 begins. The freeway heads east to its first interchange after US322, Barker Avenue leads east to the south end of Route 44. The next interchange provides access to Route 44. After Route 44 is the last interchange, with Cedar Swamp Road, along I-295, the route is a six-lane freeway, coming to an exit for CR684. Continuing east, the freeway crosses into Greenwich Township and has an interchange with CR607, after passing near Greenwich Lake, there are exits for CR653 and CR673 within a short distance of each other. I-295/US130 reaches an interchange with CR680 on the border of Greenwich Township, past this point, the freeway runs through marshy areas of Mantua Creek and continues into West Deptford Township

Interstate 195 (New Jersey)

Interstate 195 is an auxiliary route of the Interstate Highway System located in the U. S. state of New Jersey. I-195 is 34.17 miles in length, the route is mostly a four-lane highway that runs through wooded areas in the center of New Jersey. It has an interchange with the New Jersey Turnpike at Exit 7A in Robbinsville Township and serves as an access road to Six Flags Great Adventure. I-195 is occasionally referred to as the Central Jersey Expressway, on April 6,1988, President Ronald Reagan signed H. R.4263 naming Interstate 195 in New Jersey the James J. Howard Interstate Highway, in honor of the late James J. Howard. The current I-195 was initially planned as a road called the Trenton-Asbury Park Expressway in the 1950s. In the 1960s, the became part of the proposed Route 37. A compromise between two freeways was planned between Trenton and Belmar and would get Interstate Highway funding, becoming I-195. This freeway was built in stages during the 1970s and 1980s. Between 2005 and 2015, a plan existed to extend the I-195 designation west to the interchange between the Pennsylvania Turnpike and I-95 in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania. Under this plan, I-195 would have followed present I-95 and I-295 to the north of Trenton and it was instead decided to extend the I-295 designation west and south, along existing I-95, to the new interchange. I-195s western terminus is at a cloverleaf interchange with I-295 in Hamilton Township, Mercer County. From this end, the continues north into Trenton as Route 29. I-195 serves as the continuation of Route 29, continuing east from I-295 as a six-lane expressway. After the exit for US206, the narrows to four lanes and turns northeast as it interchanges with CR524. Following this, I-195 passes near neighborhoods and runs to the northwest of Gropp Lake before turning more to the east. The route has a interchange with Yardville-Hamilton Square Road before passing near business parks. After US130, the road enters Robbinsville Township as the start to become more rural. New Jersey Route 27

Route 27 is a state highway in New Jersey, United States. It runs 38.53 mi from U. S. Route 206 in Princeton, Mercer County northeast to an interchange with Route 21 and Broad Street in Newark, the route passes through many communities along the way, including New Brunswick, Metuchen, Rahway, and Elizabeth. Route 27 is a two- to four-lane undivided highway for most of its length, Route 27 crosses the Raritan River on the Albany Street Bridge, which connects Highland Park on the east with New Brunswick on the west. Route 27 was part of the alignment through New Jersey of the Lincoln Highway, Route 27 is still referred to as the Lincoln Highway in many municipalities, such as Edison Township. The Lincoln Highway became part of pre-1927 Route 1 between New Brunswick and Elizabeth in 1916 and pre-1927 Route 13 between Trenton and New Brunswick in 1917, in 1927, the Lincoln Highway was renumbered as Route 27 between Trenton and Newark. U. S. Route 1 was designated on this portion of the road until it was relocated by the 1940s. U. S. Route 206 followed the route from Trenton to Princeton until 1953, Route 27 begins at a traffic light with U. S. Route 206 and County Route 533 in downtown Princeton, Mercer County. The route heads northeast along Nassau Street, the street of Princeton that runs along the northern edge of Princeton University and is lined with numerous shops. This portion of Route 27 sees between 10,000 and 20,000 cars a day, just past the beginning of Route 27, County Route 583 heads to the southwest on Mercer Street. Route 27 moves through downtown Princeton, passing by the gates to Princeton University near Nassau Hall. After leaving the area, Route 27 continues through residential areas. Route 27 runs parallel to Carnegie Lake, then crosses over the Millstone River just north of the historic Kingston Bridge, the portion of the road from Princeton to Kingston is part of the KIngs Highway Historic District. It continues northeast through a mix of woodland and residences, intersecting Promenade Boulevard, Route 27 briefly runs entirely into Somerset County before resuming along the Middlesex/Somerset County border. Route 27 then passes through Franklin Park, intersecting County Route 610, the road forms the border of Franklin Township and New Brunswick upon intersecting County Route 680 becoming four-lane Somerset Street. Route 27 follows Somerset Street northeast through residential and commercial areas, the route splits from Somerset Street and heads entirely into New Brunswick, Middlesex County along French Street. At the Sandford Street intersection, Route 27 becomes a road that is also signed as County Route 644. It then intersects County Route 693, which heads to the southwest to become Route 91, past this intersection, the route becomes a two-lane road that heads into downtown New Brunswick, south of the main campus of Rutgers University. Here, the route has a traffic count of approximately 11,559 vehicles

As of the 2010 United States Census, the municipalitys population was 28,572, reflecting the former townships population of 16,265, along with the 12,307 in the former borough. Princeton was founded before the American Revolution and is best known as the location of Princeton University, Princeton is roughly equidistant from New York City and Philadelphia. It is close to major highways that serve both cities, and receives major television and radio broadcasts from each. It is also close to Trenton, New Jerseys capital city, the governor of New Jerseys official residence has been in Princeton since 1945, when Morven in the borough became the first Governors mansion. It was later replaced by the larger Drumthwacket, a mansion located in the former Township. Morven became a property of the New Jersey Historical Society. Princeton was ranked 15th of the top 100 towns in the United States to Live, although residents of Princeton traditionally have a strong community-wide identity, the community had been composed of two separate municipalities, a township and a borough. The central borough was completely surrounded by the township, the Borough contained Nassau Street, the main commercial street, most of the University campus, and incorporated most of the urban area until the postwar suburbanization. The Borough and Township had roughly equal populations, the Lenni Lenape Native Americans were the earliest identifiable inhabitants of the Princeton area. Europeans founded their settlement in the part of the 17th century. The first European to find his home in the boundaries of the town was Henry Greenland. He built his house in 1683 along with a tavern, in this drinking hole representatives of West Jersey and East Jersey met to set boundaries for the location of the township. Originally, Princeton was known only as part of nearby Stony Brook, James Leonard first referred to the town as Princetown, when describing the location of his large estate in his diary. The town bore a variety of names subsequently, including, Princetown, Princes Town, although there is no official documentary backing, the town is considered to be named after King William III, Prince William of Orange of the House of Nassau. Another theory suggests that the name came from a large land-owner named Henry Prince, a royal prince seems a more likely eponym for the settlement, as three nearby towns had similar names, Kingston, Queenstown and Princessville. When Richard Stockton, one of the founders of the township, died in 1709 he left his estate to his sons, who helped to expand property, based on the 1880 United States Census, the population of the town comprised 3,209 persons. Local population has expanded from the nineteenth century, according to the 2010 Census, Princeton Borough had 12,307 inhabitants, while Princeton Township had 16,265. U.S. Route 202 in New Jersey

U. S. Route 202 is a U. S. Highway running from New Castle, Delaware northeast to Bangor, Maine. In the U. S. state of New Jersey, the route runs 80, US202 encounters many major roads in New Jersey, including Route 31, US206, US22, Interstate 80, US46, Route 23, and Route 17. From Somerville to the New York border, US202 generally runs within a distance of I-287. The road ranges from a freeway between Lambertville and Ringoes in Hunterdon County to a two-lane undivided road through much of the northern portion of the route. North of the Route 53 intersection in Morris Plains, US202 is maintained by counties rather than the New Jersey Department of Transportation with a few exceptions. In the mid-1930s, US122 was renumbered to US202, in 1953, all the state highway designations were removed from US202 except for Route 23 and Route 30 to avoid long concurrencies with the route. In the 1960s, plans were made to upgrade US202 to a freeway between the Pennsylvania border and I-287 in Bridgewater Township, with the completion of the US202 freeway in Hunterdon County, the former alignment became Route 179. The portion of US202 concurrent with Route 23 in Wayne was upgraded from a road to a six-lane road in the 1980s. Route 202 and to northbound U. S. Route 202 from northbound Route 29, past Alexauken Creek Road, the freeway enters West Amwell Township, where it heads through a mix of woodland and farmland. It comes to an interchange with County Route 605, which provides access to Mount Airy. Past the County Route 605 interchange, U. S. Route 202 continues northeast through agricultural areas and it crosses into East Amwell Township and features to a partial cloverleaf interchange with Route 179. Past the Route 179 interchange, the road runs briefly through West Amwell Township before entering East Amwell Township again, bypassing the community of Ringoes. Here, Route 31 begins a concurrency with U. S. Route 202, the next intersection is for Old York Road, which heads to the southwest as Route 179 and to the northeast as County Route 514. Shortly past this intersection, the route forms the border between East Amwell Township to the west and Raritan Township to the east before crossing entirely into Raritan Township. The road continues north through farms, reaching commercial development as it approaches the Flemington area, past the intersection with County Route 611, the road widens to six lanes and crosses into Flemington. The road comes to the Flemington Circle where Route 31 heads north, past the Flemington Circle, U. S. Route 202 proceeds northeast on a four-lane divided highway that crosses back into Raritan Township. It heads through woodland, passing by Northlandz, which is home to the worlds largest model railroad in HO scale, the road crosses the South Branch Raritan River into Readington Township, where it heads east, passing over Norfolk Southerns Lehigh Line north of Three Bridges. Somerville, New Jersey

Somerville is a borough in Somerset County, New Jersey, United States. It is the county seat of Somerset County, Somerville was originally formed as a town on March 25,1863, within a portion of Bridgewater Township. The borough is named for Somerset in England, Somerville was settled in colonial times primarily by the Dutch who purchased land from the English proprietors of the colony. The Dutch established their church near what is today Somerville and a Dutch Reformed minister or Domine lived at the Old Dutch Parsonage from about 1754, the early village grew up around a church, courthouse and a tavern built at a crossroads shortly after the American Revolution. Early industry included brick making from the red clay and shale on which Somerville is built. While much of the borough features distinctive Victorian architecture in several neighborhoods and along its Main Street, near the Wallace House is the Old Dutch Parsonage, where Reverend Jacob Rutsen Hardenbergh, a founder and first president of Rutgers University, then called Queens College, lived. Register listed Victorian structures include the James Harper Smith Estate, St. Johns Episcopal Church and rectory, other notable, register eligible structures are the Victorian train station and the municipal building, the former Robert Mansion. Originally the center of commerce, the borough has evolved into a destination for boutique retail. Main Street Somerville maintains most of its buildings, although many are now boutique specialty shops. Somerville has quite a diverse and large selection of restaurants that people from the surrounding area. In many ways, Somerville remains Somerset Countys downtown, and is the heart of its designated Regional Center, several of the factories in Somerville were abandoned and replaced with modern office buildings or remodeled as apartments. Somerville today and historically has had an important African American community, another famous Somerville native was famed character actor Lee Van Cleef. One of the founders of modern American Dance, Ruth St. Denis, made her debut at Somerset Hall, once a vaudeville theatre. The mix of amenities and an interesting and diverse past make Main Street. Ground was broken for a new world class ShopRite supermarket in March 2011, Borough planners envision a transit village style redevelopment centered around the Somerville train station. Somerville was hit hard by Hurricane Floyd in September 1999, despite its having been downgraded to a storm by the time it impacted the vicinity. The borough received a record 13.34 inches of rain over three days during the slow moving storm, causing significant flooding and considerable damage. U.S. Route 22 in New Jersey

U. S. Route 22 is a U. S. highway stretching from Cincinnati, Ohio in the west to Newark, New Jersey in the east. Along this portion, it intersects US202 and US206 in Somerville, I-287 in Bridgewater Township, what became US22 in 1926 was first designated as pre-1927 Route 9, a route running from Phillipsburg to Elizabeth, in 1916. In 1927, pre-1927 Route 9 west of Elizabeth became Route 28 while the portion within Elizabeth became Route 27-28 Link. By 1941, US22 was moved to its current alignment in the Phillipsburg area, following Route 24 and Route 24-28 Link, also, US22 was moved off Route 28 east of Bridgewater Township to follow Route 28-29 Link and Route 29 to Newark. In 1953, the concurrencies with the state highways were removed. In the 1960s, I-78 was constructed close to the US22 corridor throughout New Jersey, US22 was moved onto the new interstate between Alpha and Clinton in 1969 with most of the old route becoming Route 173. US22 enters New Jersey from Easton, Pennsylvania on the Easton-Phillipsburg Toll Bridge over the Delaware River and it heads into Phillipsburg, Warren County as a four-lane undivided road maintained by the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission, eventually becoming a divided highway. East of the bridge, the westbound lanes pass through the toll plaza. At this point, the route becomes at-grade Memorial Boulevard, a four to six-lane divided thoroughfare with a wide median consisting of U-turn ramps. The median narrows as the forms the border between Lopatcong Township to the north and Phillipsburg to the south. The route fully enters Lopatcong Township and comes to an interchange with Route 57, with an eastbound exit, after passing the Route 57 junction, US22 takes a southeasterly turn and passes over Norfolk Southerns Washington Secondary before entering an agricultural area. The route forms the border between Pohatcong Township to the west and Greenwich Township to the east as it passes to the east of the Phillipsburg Mall, a short distance later, US22 intersects CR519 before heading back into a business district and meeting CR638. East of Alpha, the route intersects Route 122, which is the junction of the at-grade section of US22. Past the Route 122 intersection, US22 has an interchange with exit 3 of I-78, from there, US22 is concurrent with I-78 through a mountainous and rural area of western New Jersey. I-78/US22 follow a six-lane freeway east through Greenwich Township, coming to a westbound exit, the road turns southeast and has an eastbound exit and westbound entrance with CR632 in Franklin Township. Within the ramps for this interchange, there are stations in both directions. A short distance after this interchange, I-78/US22 crosses the Musconetcong River into Bloomsbury, in Bloomsbury, the road has an interchange with Route 173. Bridgewater Township is a township in Somerset County, New Jersey, United States. Bridgewater Township was originally created by Royal charter on April 4,1749 and it was incorporated as one of New Jerseys initial group of 104 townships by the New Jersey Legislature on February 21,1798, under the Township Act of 1798. During the nineteenth century, portions of the township were taken to form Warren Township, Branchburg Township, Somerville, Raritan, Bridgewater is a relatively large, suburban township located in the center of Somerset County. The area of the present Township of Bridgewater was originally purchased from a local Lenape Native American tribe, Bridgewater was chartered by George II of Great Britain in 1749, and incorporated on February 21,1798, as one of New Jerseys 104 original townships. It is named after the town of Bridgwater in the English county of Somerset, by special order of Congress, a Thirteen Star Flag is flown 24 hours a day at the Washington Camp Ground, part of the former Middlebrook encampment, in Bridgewater. Since 1889, the first hoisting of the flag is commemorated annually each July 4 with a changing of the flag, a reading of the Declaration of Independence, until the 1960s, Bridgewater was largely known as a farming community. Subsequently, Bridgewater started to receive an influx of residents who worked in the pharmaceutical, telecommunications and financial industries in Bridgewater. Bridgewater is now a developed suburban community, with only a few traces of its rural past still evident in the town. Bridgewater is now Somerset Countys second-most populous municipality, after Franklin Township, according to the United States Census Bureau, the township had a total area of 32.510 square miles, including 32.037 square miles of land and 0.473 square miles of water. While much of Bridgewater has relatively flat terrain, the portion of the township is very hilly. Interstate 287

Interstate 287 is an auxiliary Interstate Highway in the US states of New Jersey and New York. It is a beltway around New York City, serving the northern half of New Jersey. Through New Jersey, I-287 runs west from its terminus in Edison through suburban areas. In Bridgewater Township, the freeway takes a northeasterly course. The northernmost part of I-287 in New Jersey passes through mountainous surroundings, after crossing into New York at Suffern, I-287 turns east on the New York State Thruway and runs though Rockland County. A bypass around New York City had been planned since the 1950s and would become a part of the Interstate Highway System, the Cross-Westchester Expressway, which was originally designated as Interstate 187, opened in 1960 as Interstate 487 before later becoming part of I-287. The New York State Thruway portion of I-287, which included a crossing of the Hudson River, in New Jersey, the proposed I-287 had originally been designated as FAI Corridor 104 and incorporated what was planned as the Middlesex Freeway. The New Jersey section of I-287 between the New Jersey Turnpike in Edison and US202 in Montville opened in stages between the 1960s and 1973, the remainder opened in 1994. The aging Tappan Zee Bridge is due to be replaced with a new span — construction started in 2013, with opening scheduled for 2017. In addition, a tunnel across the Long Island Sound between Rye and Oyster Bay on Long Island would link the eastern terminus of I-287 to New York State Route 25. I-287 begins at an interchange with the New Jersey Turnpike in Edison in Middlesex County, New Jersey, within Middlesex County, I-287 is called the Lt. Col. Richard F. Lauer, US Army Highway. From this point, it heads west as a freeway through suburban areas. Past this point, the turns more to the northwest as it comes to the junction with Route 27. Following Route 27, I-287 narrows to six lanes and passes over Amtraks Northeast Corridor as it continues to a southbound exit, here, the road enters Piscataway Township and reaches an interchange with CR665. Continuing near more business parks, I-287 comes to the exit for South Randolphville Road, following this interchange, the road heads west more before it turns to the southwest and comes to an interchange with the northern terminus of Route 18. After Route 18, the comes to the CR622 exit. After crossing over the Raritan River, I-287 enters Franklin Township, Somerset County and becomes the Captain Joseph Azzolina, soon after the river, there is an interchange with CR527. After CR527, the freeway makes a turn to the northwest and passes a mix of residential areas, the road has an interchange with CR623 before crossing the Raritan River again and continuing into Bridgewater Township

Bedminster is a township in Somerset County, New Jersey, United States. Bedminster was settled in 1710 by Dutch, Germans, and Scots-Irish immigrants and it was named after Bedminster, then in Somerset, England and now a suburb of Bristol. Bedminster Township was created by Royal charter on April 4,1749 and it was incorporated formally by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21,1798. Portions of the township were taken on March 28,1912, Bedminster was the corporate headquarters of AT&T Corporation, prior to its merger with SBC Communications. Interstate 80 in New Jersey

Interstate 80 is a major Interstate Highway in the United States, running from the New York City Metropolitan Area westward to San Francisco, California. The New Jersey Department of Transportation also identifies I-80 as the Christopher Columbus Highway, I-80 in New Jersey runs 68.54 miles from the Delaware Water Gap Toll Bridge over the Delaware River at the Delaware Water Gap to its eastern terminus at I-95 in Teaneck, Bergen County. Throughout New Jersey, I-80 runs parallel to US46, the highway heads through rural areas of Warren and Sussex counties before heading into more suburban surroundings in Morris County. As the road continues into Passaic and Bergen counties, it heads into urban areas. A freeway along the I-80 corridor had been planned in 1936, with the establishment of the Interstate Highway System, this planned freeway, which had been identified in some planning documents as the Bergen-Passaic Expressway, would be incorporated into I-80. The freeway was built across New Jersey in various stages from the 1960s to 1973, the westernmost four miles in New Jersey was originally a rerouting of US611 when built, that route was later realigned back into Pennsylvania. In the 1990s, high-occupancy vehicle lanes had existed on a part of I-80 in Morris County but were opened to traffic due to underuse. The Delaware Water Gap Toll Bridge and its approach is planned to be widened from four to six lanes, I-80 enters Hardwick Township, Warren County from Pennsylvania on the Delaware Water Gap Toll Bridge over the Delaware River, maintained by the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission. In addition to carrying I-80, this also carries the Appalachian Trail over the Delaware River. From this point, the freeway heads south along the east bank of the river through the Delaware Water Gap, immediately reaching a westbound exit. Now maintained by the New Jersey Department of Transportation, the road makes a turn to the east. The highway heads south again and enters Knowlton Township, where it comes to another set of U-turn ramps that also includes a station in the eastbound direction. After turning southeast and leaving the Delaware Water Gap, the road has a westbound right-in/right-out for Hainesburg Road before crossing under the abandoned Lackawanna Cutoff. I-80 widens to six lanes and reaches an interchange with the western terminus of US46, Route 94, and Decatur Street in Columbia. A scenic overlook of the Delaware Water Gap is located in the direction while a rest area is located in the eastbound direction. Upon crossing into Blairstown Township, the eastbound direction narrows down to three lanes, in Hope Township, I-80 reaches an interchange with CR521 that also provides access to CR519 and the Land of Make Believe amusement park. The highway widens to eight lanes briefly after this interchange before narrowing to six lanes, in Frelinghuysen Township, the freeway carries four lanes eastbound and three lanes westbound. Upon coming into Allamuchy Township, I-80 has six lanes before gaining a fourth lane as it comes to the CR517 exit

New Jersey Route 183

Route 183 is a 2. 12-mile long state highway in the northern regions of New Jersey. The southern end of NJ183 is at an interchange with Interstate 80 and U. S. Route 206 near Netcong, the route heads northward through downtown Netcong and along the shores of Lake Musconetcong and enters Sussex County, New Jersey. The route is an alignment of US206 bypassed in 1973. The highway dates back to the designations of State Highway Route 31, the Netcong Circle, a traffic circle in Netcong between NJ183 and U. S. Route 46 was present for the entire lifetime of NJ183 until it was replaced by a signalized intersection in 2013. A nearby bridge over a New Jersey Transit line was also replaced, Route 183 begins at a partial cloverleaf interchange with U. S. Route 206 and Interstate 80 in the community of Roxbury, New Jersey. The route heads northward, intersecting with local dead-end streets deep in the forests of rural Morris County, Route 183 passes a nearby factory and intersects U. S. Route 46. The route continues northward, crossing over a creek and entering downtown Netcong, downtown Netcong is highly developed, and Route 183 serves as the main street through the community. The highway intersects with Allen Street before running along the shores of Lake Musconetcong, upon entering Sussex County, Route 183 enters the community of Stanhope. At the intersection with Musconetcong Avenue, the turns to the northwest. Route 183 continues through the developments in Stanhope, working its way into the mountains above the lake. At the intersection with Dell Road, Route 183 becomes intertwined with the interchange on U. S. Route 206 northbound, and the highways merge a short distance later in Stanhope. The original designation in the area of Netcong along Route 183s alignment is State Highway Route 31, the route was first assigned in the 1927 state highway renumbering as a co-designation to US206. This alignment remained in place for two and half decades, when in the 1953 state highway renumbering, the State Highway Route 31 designation was dropped in favor of using U. S. Route 206. The route in Netcong stayed the same for years after the decommissioning until the Regional Plan Association proposed a freeway realignment of US206 in 1962. The highway was to serve local areas and relieve traffic on Interstate 287 to the east. The route was advocated through 1972, and after the fiscal year budgets went sour, the project was to produce two outcomes, replacement of the New Jersey Transit bridge that Route 183 crosses, and the elimination of the Netcong Circle with a signalized intersection. The project had issues dealing with the clearance of the overpass for U. S. Route 46 westbound. The removal of the circle would eliminate this bridge, and the land would go to use as the new signalized intersection, with pedestrian, the entire project cost about $13.3 million of state and local funds to construct

New Jersey Route 15

Route 15 is a state highway in New Jersey, spanning Morris and Sussex counties, which heads for 19.16 miles from U. S. Route 46 in Dover to an intersection with U. S. Route 206 in Frankford Township. It becomes a highway in Jefferson Township until becoming a freeway bypass near Sparta. Route 15 was originally Route 6A from 1927 until 1953, when a renumbering occurred, since the finishing of the Sparta Bypass, the New Jersey Department of Transportation and North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority have considered more bypasses and alignment changes for 15. Route 15 begins at an interchange with U. S. Route 46, slightly to the east of the underpass Route 15 used to use to pass under U. S. Route 46, Route 15 then winds through Dover concurrent with several streets. The road remains two lanes past the turn for the Rockaway Townsquare Mall, in the township of Rockaway, for a very short distance Route 15 becomes a freeway as it crosses the Interstate 80 interchange. A mile north, the road becomes a four lane divided highway with exits for a few businesses, at that point, Route 15 leaves Rockaway Township and enters Jefferson Township. In Jefferson Township, the northbound and southbound lanes become about a mile apart as it climbs up a steep mountain. The Southbound lanes have businesses, easy access to them, the northbound lanes are nearly a freeway with limited access to businesses on the southbound lanes. The northbound lanes have a limit of 50 mph as well. These two lanes were built in the late 1960s, slightly farther north, Route 15 becomes a freeway and the northbound and southbound lanes come closer together. At this point, the original two-lane Route 15 breaks off into Route 181, heading through Jefferson Township, several miles north, the freeway leaves Morris County in Jefferson Township and enters Sussex County and Sparta Township, bypassing downtown Sparta. After bypassing downtown Sparta, Route 181 ends and merges onto Route 15, the freeway then ends and Route 15 becomes a two-lane road. After Route 15 leaves Sparta and enters Lafayette Township, it merges with Route 94, routes 15 and 94 run as a concurrency until Route 94 turns off to the southeast while Route 15 heads northwest. It continues into Frankford Township and comes to an end at U. S. Route 206, before the 1953 New Jersey state highway renumbering, NJ15 was designated as State Highway Route 6A, beginning in 1927. In the renumbering, NJ15 was assigned, originally Route 15 was a 2 lane road all the way down to Picitinny Arsenal. The road originally went through downtown Sparta and today that road is known as route 181, in the mid-1960s, Route 15 was to expand and become 4 lanes several miles into Jefferson Township. But businesses were on both sides of road making a widening difficult. So the additional 2 lanes were built behind the businesses on the side of the road heading south

Frankford Township is a township in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. Portions of the township were taken to form Lafayette Township and Sparta Township, along with Branchville, which is completely surrounded by the township. The township was said to have named after Frankford, a neighborhood of Philadelphia. Since 1976, the township has been the home of the Farm and Horse Show, the New Jersey State Fair / Sussex County Farm & Horse Show has evolved as the site of numerous activities and events throughout the year. The stadium is the home of the Sussex County Miners of the Can-Am League, a large outlet mall has been proposed for the intersection of U. S. Route 206, Route 15, and County Route 565 in front of Skylands Park. This mall has met a large amount of opposition, but has been approved and is awaiting approval by the State of New Jersey. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township had an area of 35.438 square miles. Culvers Lake and Lake Owassa, two lakes nestled below the Kittatinny Mountain, form the northern border. The township is located in the Kittatinny Valley which is a section of the 700 mile long Great Appalachian Valley that stretches from Canada to Alabama. The borough pf Branchville is completely surrounded by Frankford Township, making it part of 21 pairs of doughnut towns in the state, ross Corner is a unincorporated community and census-designated place located within Frankford Township. Augusta is another unincorporated community located within the township, elevation ranges from 450 feet above sea level and approach 1,000 feet. At the Paulinskill River, the elevation is 500 feet, there are several hills with elevations of 800 feet and one hill of 908 feet. Most of Frankford Township is on the Ordovician Martinsburg Formation and this is a shale, slate, and limestone formation created 450 millions of years ago when a chain of volcanic islands collided with proto North America. This is a dark, almost black, shale, however the Jacksonburg formation rides over the Martinsburg shale in most areas. This shale is silver in color in the inside of the shale, the islands went over the North American plate, creating the Highlands of Sussex County. The sediment at the bottom of seas was uplifted and formed shale, millions of years of erosion occurred and there was a second event. About 400 million years ago small continent that was long and thin, the Silurian Shawnangunk conglomerate that was under a shallow sea, lifted due to pressure. The pressure created heat which melted the silica, bonded the quartz and conglomerate together, the Wisconsin Glacier covered all of the township from 21,000 BC to 13,000 BC

U. S. Route 209 is a 211. 74-mile long U. S. Highway in the states of Pennsylvania and New York. Although the route is a spur of US9, US209 never intersects US9, the southern terminus of the route is at Pennsylvania Route 147 in Millersburg, Pennsylvania. The northern terminus is at US 9W north of Kingston in Ulster, New York, US209 is one of the original highways in the 1926 U. S. Highway System plan. US209 was assigned as part of the establishment of the U. S. Highway System in 1926, the route was initially an intrastate highway contained entirely within the state of Pennsylvania. It began at an intersection with US11 in Clarks Ferry, US209 was extended northward to US 9W in Kingston, New York, in April 1935 and truncated to Millersburg, Pennsylvania, by 1938. The portion of US209 in New York north of Port Jervis was previously designated as US6 from 1926 to 1928, US209 was realigned onto limited-access highways in two locations along its routing during the 1960s. In Kingston, New York, construction began on a highway bypassing downtown to the northwest in the early 1960s, the highway began at US209 south of the city and ended at US 9W north of downtown Kingston. It opened to traffic as a realignment of US209 by 1964, in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, US209 was moved onto a pair of new expressways south and east of the borough in the 1960s. US 209s former routing into Stroudsburg was redesignated as US209 Business, although signed as a north–south route in both states for its entire length,209 actually runs closer to east–west along its southern sections in Pennsylvania, only gently trending northward. Only at Stroudsburg does it begin to more to the north as it begins to follow the Delaware River. In New York it runs almost due northeast for its entire length, much of the highway in both states is a two-lane road, running through narrow mountain valleys, but there are expressway portions. In Pennsylvania, one near Stroudsburg connects concurrencies with PA33 and Interstate 80, in New York, from there it follows the Nesquehoning Creek valley down to the Lehigh River, which 209 follows southeasterly through Jim Thorpe to Lehighton. Business 209 leaves the road at Sciota for travelers wishing to bypass the expressway, at the next exit,209 takes its own short branch of expressway several miles to I-80 just outside Stroudsburg. It stays with the Interstate through the borough and neighboring East Stroudsburg from exits 304 to 309 and this 20-mile segment provides access to New Jersey via toll bridges at Dingmans Bridge and Milford Crossing, where US206 comes to its northern end. Just beyond the bridge, the road reaches Milford, where US6 joins it. The two highways eventually start to run alongside I-84, and development picks up as they approach Matamoras, after crossing under the interstate at its final Pennsylvania interchange, they form the boroughs Main Street and cross into New York via the Mid-Delaware Bridge. 6 and 209 remain concurrent as they enter Port Jervis, while the scenery is often spectacular, the settlements along the road are few, with only one blinker between Port Jervis and the Sullivan County line. New Jersey is a state in the Northeastern and mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. It is bordered on the north and east by New York, on the southeast and south by the Atlantic Ocean, on the west by Pennsylvania, New Jersey is the fourth-smallest state but the 11th-most populous and the most densely populated of the 50 United States. New Jersey lies entirely within the statistical areas of New York City. New Jersey was inhabited by Native Americans for more than 2,800 years, in the early 17th century, the Dutch and the Swedes made the first European settlements. New Jersey was the site of decisive battles during the American Revolutionary War in the 18th century. In the 19th century, factories in cities such as Camden, Paterson, Newark, Trenton, around 180 million years ago, during the Jurassic Period, New Jersey bordered North Africa. The pressure of the collision between North America and Africa gave rise to the Appalachian Mountains, around 18,000 years ago, the Ice Age resulted in glaciers that reached New Jersey. As the glaciers retreated, they left behind Lake Passaic, as well as rivers, swamps. New Jersey was originally settled by Native Americans, with the Lenni-Lenape being dominant at the time of contact, scheyichbi is the Lenape name for the land that is now New Jersey. The Lenape society was divided into clans that were based upon common female ancestors. These clans were organized into three distinct phratries identified by their animal sign, Turtle, Turkey, and Wolf and they first encountered the Dutch in the early 17th century, and their primary relationship with the Europeans was through fur trade. The Dutch became the first Europeans to lay claim to lands in New Jersey, the Dutch colony of New Netherland consisted of parts of modern Middle Atlantic states. Although the European principle of ownership was not recognized by the Lenape. All of what is today as Atlantic County was once called Egg Harbor Township. Named as a district as early as 1693, it was bounded on the north by the Little Egg Harbor River. Burlington County is part of the Delaware Valley area, located east of the Delaware River, however, the county stretches across the state, and its southeast corner reaches tidal estuaries leading to southern New Jerseys Great Bay, which separates the county from the Atlantic Ocean. Anglo-European records of Burlington County date to 1681, when its court was established in the Province of West Jersey, the county was formed on May 17,1694, by the union of the first and second Tenths. The county was named for Bridlington, a town in England, Burlington County was also the seat of government for the Province of West Jersey until its amalgamation with East Jersey in 1702, forming the Province of New Jersey. The county was larger and was partitioned to form additional counties as the population increased. In 1714 one partition to the north became Hunterdon County, which itself was partitioned to form three additional counties. The majority of the land is dotted with rivers, streams, some of the largest and most important rivers in Burlington County include, Rancocas Creek, Assiscunk Creek, Pennsauken Creek, Mullica River, Batsto River, and Wading River. Average monthly precipitation ranged from 2.92 inches in February to 4.87 inches in August, Burlington County has a humid-subtropical / humid continental transition climate, with relatively cold winters and hot summers. Severe weather is common in the warm months, hurricanes have been known to strike Burlington County on occasion. Tornadoes are uncommon in the county, severe thunderstorms, however, are quite common during the warm season. Snowfall is typical in the winter, with the averages in the county ranging from about 18 to 22 inches. The climate and weather of Burlington county is moderated by the nearby Atlantic Ocean, the county seat receives about 41 inches of rain per year. Due to sandy soil, on clear and dry nights these areas might be 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit colder than the surrounding areas, and there is a shorter frost-free season in these places. For much of its history, Somerset County was primarily an agricultural county, in the late 19th century, the Somerset Hills area of Somerset County became a popular country home for wealthy industrialists. The area is still the home of wealthy pharmaceutical industrialists, in 1917, Somerset County, in cooperation with Rutgers University, hired its first agricultural agent to connect local farmers with expert advice. In the 1960s, townships that were once exclusively agricultural were quickly transformed into suburban communities, examples include Bridgewater Township and the Watchung Hills communities of Watchung, Green Brook and Warren Township. This growth was aided by the development of the very strong pharmaceutical. Morris County is a county located in the U. S. state of New Jersey, about 25 mi west of New York City. 2% increase from 2010. The county is part of the New York Metropolitan Area, the county ranked third in the New York Metropolitan area in terms of median income. Morris County was named after Colonel Lewis Morris, governor of New Jersey in 1738/9, the Wisconsin Glacier covered the northern section of Morris County from 23,000 B. C. to 13,000 B. C. After the Wisconsin Glacier melted around 13,000 B. C, paleo Indians moved into the area from the south in search of big and small game as well as plants. The area was first tundra with grasses growing, rabbits and fox moved into the area from the south. The area of Morris County was inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans prior to the arrival of European settlers around the year 1000 and they came from the Mississippi River area. They lived along the rivers and hunted game, fished, collected plants and nuts, henry Hudson explored the Hudson River area in 1609, which later the Dutch did surveys of the area. From 1611 to 1614, the Dutch established the colony of New Netherland, Dutch forts were established along the Hudson River beginning in 1613. As the years went by, more forts were established to trade with Native Americans, the Native Americans traded furs and food with the Dutch for various goods. In return the Dutch gave the Native Americans metal pots, knives, guns, axes, trading with the Native Americans occurred until 1643 when a series of wars broke out between the Dutch and Native Americans. There were hostile relations between the Dutch and Native Americans between 1643 and 1660 and this prevented colonization by the Dutch of the Morris County region which was technically included in their claimed New Netherland. On August 27,1664, three English ships approached Fort Amsterdam and the fort was surrendered to the English, the English now controlled New Netherland and Morris County was now under control of the colony of New York. Relations with the Native Americans improved for a while, there was a war with the Dutch ten years later. The Dutch re-took control of New Amsterdam but after a year returned it to the English, relations with the Native Americans and English improved for a while. European settlements began in the early 18th century while it was known as Hunterdon County, Native Americans were still in the area at that time. Land was purchased from the Native Americans for various such as blankets, shirts, rum, guns, knives, pots. The Native Americans concept of selling land was different than that of the Europeans, colonization occurred along the Atlantic coast and moved inland. Sussex County is the northernmost county in the State of New Jersey. Based on 2010 Census data, Vernon Township was the countys largest in population and area, with a population of 23,943 and covering an area of 70.59 square miles. As of 2010 The Bureau of Economic Analysis ranked the county as having the 131st-highest per capita income of the 3,113 counties in the United States, the county was established in 1753 and named after historic County Sussex, England. Because of its topography, Sussex County has remained a relatively rural, the county is part of the Skylands Region, a term promoted by the New Jersey Commerce, Economic Growth, & Tourism Commission to encourage tourism. In the western half of the county, several state and federal parks have kept the large tracts of land undeveloped, the eastern half of the county has had more suburban development because of its proximity to more populated areas and commercial development zones. Until the mid-20th century, most of Sussex Countys economy was based on agriculture, with the decline of these industries in the 1960s, Sussex County was transformed into a bedroom community that absorbed population shifts from New Jerseys urban areas. Recent studies estimate that 60 percent of Sussex County residents work outside of the county, the area of Sussex County and its surrounding region was occupied for approximately 8, 000-13,000 years by succeeding cultures of indigenous peoples. At the time of European encounter, the Munsee Indians inhabited the region, the Munsee were a loosely organized division of the Lenape, a Native American people also called Delaware Indians after their historic territory along the Delaware River. The Lenape inhabited the coastal areas and inland along the Hudson. As early as 1690, Dutch and French Huguenot colonists from towns along the Hudson River Valley in New York began permanently settling in the Upper Delaware Valley. The route these Dutch settlers had taken was the path of an old Indian trail and became the route of the Old Mine Road and stretches of present-date U. S. Route 209. These Dutch settlers penetrated the Minisink Valley and settled as far south as the Delaware Water Gap, throughout the 18th century, immigrants from the Rheinland Palatinate in Germany and Switzerland fled religious wars and poverty to arrive in Philadelphia and New York City. By this time, four large townships had been created in this sparsely populated Northwestern region, Walpack Township, Greenwich Township, Hardwick Township and Newtown Township. On June 8,1753, Sussex County was created from four municipalities. On November 20,1824, Warren County was created from the territory of the Sussex County. Pike County is a county located in the U. S. state of Pennsylvania. As of the 2010 census, the population was 57,369, Pike County is included in the New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 2006, Pike County was the county in the state of Pennsylvania. Pike County was named for General Zebulon Pike and it was organized on March 26,1814 from part of Wayne County, Pennsylvania. Some English settlement in the area had started during the colonial years, in 1694, Governor Benjamin Fletcher of the colony of New York sent Captain Arent Schuyler to investigate claims that the French were recruiting Indian allies for use against the English. Nicholas Depui was the first to settle in the area, in 1725, thomas Quick moved to the area that would become Milford in 1733. Andrew Dingman settled on the Delaware River at the site of Dingmans Ferry in 1735. The early settlers got along well with the Lenape and traded with them, as settlement increased and their land practices encroached on Lenape uses, land disputes arose. The colonists infamous Walking Purchase of 1737 swindled the Indians out of more than half of present-day Pike County, as they realized what had happened, violent conflicts arose between the Lenape and the colonists. Early in the century, coal was discovered nearby in the area that would become Carbondale. This became especially significant as the British restricted export of British coal to the United States after the War of 1812, creating a fuel shortage in rapidly expanding New York City. To get the coal to New York, developers proposed a gravity railroad from Carbondale to Honesdale, the state of New York approved the canal proposal in 1823. Work on the 108-mile Delaware and Hudson Canal began in 1825 and was completed in 1828, the canal system which terminated at the Hudson River near present-day Kingston, proved profitable. But, the barges had to cross the Delaware via a ferry across a slackwater dam. John Roebling proposed continuing the canal over the river as part of an aqueduct, built in 1848, his innovative design required only three piers, where five would ordinarily have been required, this allowed ice floes and timber rafts to pass under with less damage to the bridge. Three other suspension aqueducts were built for the canal. Roeblings Delaware Aqueduct is still standing, possibly the oldest suspension bridge in America, for fifty-one years, coal flowed to New York City via the canal. But the development of railroads, which were faster, cheaper, the New York and Erie Railroad supplanted the canal and in 1898 the water route was abandoned

United States Numbered Highway System

The United States Numbered Highway System is an integrated network of roads and highways numbered within a nationwide grid in the contiguous United States. The route numbers and locations are coordinated by the American Association of State Highway, the only federal involvement in AASHTO is a nonvoting seat for the United States Department of Transportation. Generally, north-to-south highways are odd-numbered, with lowest numbers in the east, the area of the thirteen states of the United States. Similarly, east-to-west highways are typically even-numbered, with the lowest numbers in the north, where roads were first improved most intensively, major north–south routes have numbers ending in 1 while major east–west routes have numbers ending in 0. Three-digit numbered highways are spur routes of parent highways but are not necessarily connected to their parents, some divided routes exist to provide two alignments for one route, even though many splits have been eliminated. Special routes, usually posted with a banner, can provide various routes, such as an alternate, bypass or business route, Routes were designated, auto trails designated by auto trail associations were the main means of marking roads through the United States. In 1925, the Joint Board on Interstate Highways, recommended by the American Association of State Highway Officials, after several meetings, a final report was approved by the U. S. Department of Agriculture in November 1925. They received complaints from across the country about the assignment of routes, so the Board made several modifications, as a result of compromises made to get the U. S. Highway System approved, many routes were divided, with alignments to serve different towns. In subsequent years, AASHTO called for such splits in U. S, expansion of the system continued until 1956, when the Interstate Highway System was formed. After construction was completed, many U. S, Routes were replaced by Interstate Highways for through traffic. Highways still form many important regional connections, and new routes are still being added, Routes do not have a minimum design standard, unlike the later Interstate Highways, and are not usually built to freeway standards. Many are designated using the streets of the cities and towns through which they run. New additions to the system, however, must substantially meet the current AASHTO design standards, as of 1989, the United States Numbered Highways system has a total length of 157,724 miles. Except for toll bridges and tunnels, very few U. S. AASHTO policy says that a road may only be included as a special route. U. S. Route 3 meets this obligation, in New Hampshire, but US Routes in the system do use parts of four toll roads, US51 uses part of the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway in Illinois, the old road is Illinois Route 251. US278 uses the tolled Cross Island Parkway in South Carolina, US412 uses the Cimarron Turnpike in Oklahoma, the old road is US64. In the U. S. state of New Jersey, the New Jersey Department of Transportation maintains a system of state highways. Every significant section of roadway maintained by the state is assigned a number, officially State Highway Route X but commonly called Route X by the NJDOT and the general public. Highways are included in the system, and are also called Route X. State Routes are signed with the circular highway shield. The majority of Routes are maintained by the state, but occasionally, for the sake of continuity, major routes are typically assigned one- or two-digit numbers, except where the numbers were chosen to match an adjacent state. Most numbers from 1 to 50 follow a general geographic pattern assigned in 1927, the only suffixed routes other than U. S. Route 9W are short unmarked connections such as Route 76C, an elongated ramp to Interstate 76. The only special route is Route 33 Business, U. S. Route 1 Business. A statewide system of county highways is numbered by the NJDOT in the 500-599 range. All counties but two – Bergen and Monmouth – number their other county routes beginning at 600, County routes in Bergen County range from 2 to 134, those in Monmouth County range from 1 to 57. Ocean County also has a system of county routes with numbers ranging from 3 to 111 in addition to those beginning with 600. The initial system of highways was legislated in 1916. By 1922, the routes were marked, U. S. Route numbers were added to some of the main routes in 1927. Every state highway, even those parts of U. S. Routes, was assigned a number. Some short routes were assigned prefixes of S, for instance, one prefixed and suffixed route - Route S4A - was also defined as a second spur of Route 4. As the system grew, some numbers beyond 50 were used, on January 1,1953, the second renumbering was implemented. Some routes were shortened to remove concurrencies, while others, like Route 25, numbers from 53 to 93 were assigned to renumbered routes, while shorter ones received numbers from 152 to 165. The two planned toll roads — the Garden State Parkway and New Jersey Turnpike - received only those names, the majority of new numbers assigned since the 1953 renumbering have been from 166 to 185, with some short routes instead receiving numbers based on their parents. New Jersey Route 208

Route 208 is a state highway in the northern part of New Jersey in the United States. It runs 10.07 miles from an interchange with Route 4, the route runs through suburban areas of Bergen and Passaic counties as four- to six-lane divided highway. It is constructed like a freeway, as intersections with cross roads are controlled by interchanges, but is not a controlled access road as several driveways exist. The route runs through the communities of Fair Lawn, Glen Rock, Hawthorne, Wyckoff and this route replaced what was planned as a part of Route 3 in 1927 between Paterson and Greenwood Lake. By the time the route was renumbered to Route 208 in 1953 to match NY208, Route 208 was completed west to U. S. Route 202 in Oakland by 1960 as a two-lane undivided road, it would be built into its present configuration in later years. A Route 208 freeway was planned across the Ramapo Mountains from Oakland to connect to a proposed NY208 freeway at Greenwood Lake, however, it was never built. After I-287 was extended from Montville to the New York border in 1993, the last traffic signal along Route 208 at McBride Avenue was removed in 1995 and the interchange with Route 4 and Saddle River Road was reconstructed in 2002. Route 208 is constructed like a freeway, however, at no point does it meet the standard of controlled access, several streets and private driveways abut the road throughout its length, with right-in/right-out access, however, no traffic may cross the highway at grade. Traffic moves in at least two lanes in each direction for the entire length of 10.07 miles, widening briefly to three lanes next to a commercial area in Fair Lawn and near its northern terminus. The road originates at an interchange with Route 4 in Fair Lawn, Bergen County that also includes ramps for County Route 79, shortly after beginning, a ramp from southbound Route 208 provides access via Virginia Drive to westbound Route 4. The next exit is a interchange with County Route 78. Past the latter, the passes over New Jersey Transit’s Bergen County Line and comes to a southbound exit. From here, the turns to the northwest, passing near more neighborhoods before coming to an interchange with County Route 76. Past this interchange, the direction of Route 208 widens to three lanes and it continues into commercial areas, with some driveways along the road and an intersection with McBride Avenue. At this point, the highway passes a park, including a Nabisco plant on the right side. A short distance later, the road reaches the interchange with County Route 507, past this interchange, the road enters Glen Rock and has a northbound exit and entrance with De Boer Drive before crossing over the New Jersey Transit Main Line. Past the railroad crossing, Route 208 heads through wooded areas prior to a northbound interchange with County Route 653. County Route 653 and Route 208 are connected by a segment of County Route 664

Pennsylvania Route 208

Pennsylvania Route 208 is located in Western Pennsylvania, its western terminus just west of the village of New Bedford in Lawrence County at US422 and the Ohio state line. It runs nearly 75 miles to its terminus in the village of Frills Corners in Clarion County at PA Route 36. The route begins in Lawrence County where US Route 422 meets the Ohio state line, in the borough, PA Route 158 joins briefly, and then leaves the route at the northern terminus of PA Route 956.7 miles later. As PA208 enters Mercer County, it turns east-northeast and meets US Route 19 at the village of Leesburg about 1.7 miles later, the routes briefly overlap northward, and then PA208 continues east-northeastward. About 3.5 miles from Leesburg, the route is joined by PA Route 258 north of the Grove City Premium Outlets, and the concurrency then interchanges with I-79 immediately thereafter. The concurrency ends 0.4 miles later at the village of London – prior to the interstate, PA208 continues east-northeast about 3.5 miles to the borough of Grove City, where it meets PA Route 58 and PA Route 173.4 miles. About 7.6 miles later, or 1.8 miles west of the borough of Emlenton, the route is joined by PA Route 38, this route, just south of this intersection, meets I-80. The westbound interchange ramps are 0.3 eastward on the PA 38/PA208 concurrency, after crossing into Clarion County a second and final time, the PA 38/PA208 concurrency continues north-northeastward 1.2 miles before its northern terminus. PA208 turns eastward and winds 7.3 miles to the borough of Knox, continuing east-northeast, the route travels 3.8 miles to the borough of Shippenville, where it meets US Route 322. Delaware River

The Delaware River is a major river on the Atlantic coast of the United States. Its watershed drains an area of 14,119 square miles in five U. S. states—New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, not including Delaware Bay, the rivers length including its two branches is 388 miles. The Delaware River is one of nineteen Great Waters recognized by the Americas Great Waters Coalition, the Delaware River rises in two main branches that descend from the western flank of the Catskill Mountains in New York. The West Branch begins near Mount Jefferson in the Town of Jefferson in Schoharie County, the rivers East Branch begins at Grand Gorge near Roxbury Delaware County. These two branches flow west and merge near Hancock in Delaware County and the waters flow as the Delaware River south. The river meets tide-water at the junction of Morrisville, Pennsylvania and Trenton, the rivers navigable, tidal section served as a conduit for shipping and transportation that aided the development of the industrial cities of Trenton, Camden, and Philadelphia. The mean freshwater discharge of the Delaware River into the estuary of Delaware Bay is 11,550 cubic feet per second, in 1609, the river was first visited by a Dutch East India Company expedition led by Henry Hudson. Hudson, an English navigator, was hired to find a route to Cathay. Early Dutch and Swedish settlements were established along the section of river. Both colonial powers called the river the South River, compared to the Hudson River, lord de la Warr waged a punitive campaign to subdue the Powhatan after they had killed the colonys council president, John Ratcliffe, and attacked the colonys fledgling settlements. Lord de la Warr arrived with 150 soldiers in time to prevent colonys original settlers at Jamestown from giving up, the name of barony is pronounced as in the current spelling form Delaware and is thought to derive from French de la Guerre. It has often reported that the river and bay received the name Delaware after English forces under Richard Nicolls expelled the Dutch. However, the river and bay were known by the name Delaware as early as 1641, the state of Delaware was originally part of the William Penns Pennsylvania colony. In 1682, the Duke of York granted Penns request for access to the sea and leased him the territory along the western shore of Delaware Bay which became known as the Lower Counties on the Delaware. The Delaware Rivers watershed drains an area of 14,119 square miles and encompasses 42 counties and 838 municipalities in five U. S. states—New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware. This total area constitutes approximately 0. 4% of the mass in the United States. In 2001, the watershed was 18% agricultural land, 14% developed land, there are 216 tributary streams and creeks—an estimated 14,057 miles of streams and creeks—in the watershed. Milford, Pennsylvania

Milford is a borough in Pike County, Pennsylvania, United States, and the county seat. Its population was 1,021 at the 2010 census, the English also called the people the Delaware, after the river they named after one of their colonial leaders. Milford was founded in 1796 after the American Revolutionary War as a United States settlement on the Delaware River by Judge John Biddis and he named the settlement after his ancestral home in Wales. Milford has a number of historical significant buildings, many constructed in the nineteenth century. Some are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, while others are included in the Milford Historic District. Of the 655 buildings in the district,400 of them have been deemed to be historically significant, the district is characterized by a variety of Late Victorian architecture, as well as Mid-19th Century Revival, and Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals. It has been designated a National Historic Landmark, jervis Gordon Grist Mill Historic District, Hotel Fauchere and Annex, Metz Ice Plant, and Pike County Courthouse are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nearby is Arisbe, the home of Charles S. Peirce, a prominent logician, philosopher and scientist in the late 19th century, and another NRHP property. The Pike County Historical Society Museum in Milford includes in its collection the Lincoln Flag, the flag was bundled up and placed under the Presidents head, and still bears his blood. It was kept by stage manager Thomas Gourlay and he passed it down to his daughter Jeannie, an actress who had appeared in the play, Our American Cousin, at the theatre that night. She later moved to Milford and the flag was donated to the museum after her death, in September 2007, Arthur Frommers Budget Travel named Milford second on its list of Ten Coolest Small Towns in Pennsylvania. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has an area of 0.5 square miles. This is located in the Poconos Mountains, in what was historically a heavily wooded area, at the intersection of Broad and High is a public square – just as there is at Broad and Market in Philadelphia – and most of Milfords official buildings are located there. In between both the named and numbered streets are alleys, named after berries and fruit, in contemporary Milford, Broad Street is also marked as U. S. Route 6 and U. S. Route 209. At its intersection with Harford Street, Route 6 continues north on Harford, Milford is located on an escarpment above the Delaware River. These also provided power to mills, which contributed to Milfords economy in the 19th century. As of the census of 2010, there were 1,021 people,491 households, the population density was 2,042 people per square mile. There were 580 housing units at a density of 1,160 per square mile

Concurrency (road)

A concurrency in a road network is an instance of one physical road bearing two or more different highway, motorway, or other route numbers. When two freeways share the same right-of-way, it is called a common section or commons. Other terminology for a concurrency includes overlap, coincidence, duplex, triplex, multiplex, concurrent numbering can become very common in countries that allow it. In some countries, however, concurrent numbering is avoided by posting only one number on road signs. Criticism of concurrencies include environmental intrusion, as well as being considered a factor in road accidents, most concurrencies are simply a combination of two route numbers on the same physical road. This is often advantageous as well as economically advantageous, it may be better for two route numbers to be combined into one along riverways or through mountain valleys. Some nations allow for concurrencies to occur, however, some nations specifically do not allow it to happen, in those nations which do permit concurrencies, it can become very common. In these countries, there are a variety of concurrences which can occur, an example of this is the concurrency of I-70 and I-76 on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in western Pennsylvania. A triple Interstate concurrency is found north of Madison, Wisconsin, with I-39, I-90, Wisconsin has another triple Interstate concurrency along the five-mile section of I-41, I-43, and I-894 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The concurrency of I-41 and I-43 on this roadway is an example of a wrong-way concurrency, the longest Interstate highway concurrency is I-80 and I-90 for 265 miles across Indiana and Ohio. There are examples of eight-way concurrencies, I-465 around Indianapolis and Georgia State Route 10 Loop around downtown Athens, Georgia. Portions of the 53-mile I-465 overlap with I-74, US31, US36, US40, US52, US421, SR37, seven of the eight other designations overlap between exits 46 and 47 to create an eight-way concurrency. In the United States, concurrencies are simply marked by placing signs for both routes on the same or adjacent posts, the federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices prescribes that when mounting these adjacent signs together that the numbers will be arranged vertically or horizontally in order of precedence. The order to be used is Interstate Highways, U. S. Highways, state highways, and finally county roads, several states do not officially have any concurrencies, instead officially ending routes on each side of one. There are several circumstances where unusual concurrencies exist along state borders, one example occurs along the Oklahoma–Arkansas state line. At the northern end of this border Oklahoma State Highway 20 runs concurrently with Arkansas Highway 43, concurrencies are also found in Canada. In Manitoba, the Trans-Canada Highway from Winnipeg to Portage la Prairie is concurrently signed with Yellowhead Highway, in Ontario, the Queen Elizabeth Way and Highway 403 run concurrently between Burlington and Oakville, forming the provinces only concurrency between two 400-series highways. In the United Kingdom, routes do not run concurrently with others, where this would normally occur, the roadway takes the number of only one of the routes, while the other routes are considered to have a gap and are signed in brackets

U.S. Route 6 in Pennsylvania

It is the longest highway segment in the Commonwealth. Most of it is a rural highway, with some freeway bypasses around larger towns. Except east of Scranton, where it is paralleled by Interstate 84, what is now Interstate 80—the Keystone Shortway—was once planned along the US6 corridor as a western extension of I-84. The corridor was originally the Roosevelt Highway from Erie, Pennsylvania to Port Jervis, New York, the PA7 designation soon disappeared, but as US6 was extended and relocated, the Roosevelt Highway followed it. The Pennsylvania section of US6 was renamed the Grand Army of the Republic Highway in 1946, US6 meets with U. S. Route 19 near Meadville, where it turns north with US19 to a point east of Edinboro. There it turns east and passes through the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania, at Towanda it turns more southeasterly to reach Scranton, then turning back northeast out of Scranton to Carbondale and generally east and southeast to New York. As approved by the American Association of State Highway Officials on November 11,1926, the west end of US6 was at Kane, where U. S. Route 120 continued west to Erie. US6 also used present Pennsylvania Route 706, U. S. Route 11 and Pennsylvania Route 106 between Wyalusing and Carbondale, while U. S. Route 106 took the southerly route via Scranton. By the end of 1927, US6 had replaced US120 in running west from Kane to Erie, and had swapped places with US106 via Scranton, by 1930 its west end was at 26th Street and State Street in Erie. S.
