Gary, Indiana

Gary is a city in Lake County, Indiana, United States,25 miles from downtown Chicago, Illinois. The population of Gary was 80,294 at the 2010 census, from the middle of the twentieth century to the present, Gary has experienced drastic population loss, falling by 55 percent from its peak of 178,320 in 1960. Gary is adjacent to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and borders Lake Michigan, the city is known for its large steel mills, and for being the birthplace of The Jackson 5 music group. Gary, Indiana, was founded in 1906 by the United States Steel Corporation as the home for its new plant, the city was named after lawyer Elbert Henry Gary, who was the founding chairman of the United States Steel Corporation. Gary was the site of civil unrest in the Steel Strike of 1919, on October 4,1919, a riot broke out on Broadway, the main north-south street through downtown Gary, between striking steel workers and strike breakers brought in from outside. Three days later, Indiana governor James P. Goodrich declared martial law, shortly thereafter, over 4,000 federal troops under the command of Major General Leonard Wood arrived to restore order. The jobs offered by the industry provided Gary with very rapid growth. At that time,19. 3% of the population was classified as foreign-born, Gary was also becoming increasingly racially diverse, with 17. 8% of the population classified as black, and 3. 5% as Mexican. Garys fortunes have risen and fallen with those of the steel industry, the growth of the steel industry brought prosperity to the community. Broadway was known as a center for the region. Department stores and architecturally significant movie houses were built in the downtown area, in the 1960s, like many other American urban centers reliant on one particular industry, Gary entered a spiral of decline. Garys decline was brought on by the growing overseas competitiveness in the steel industry, the U. S. Steel Gary Works employed over 30,000 in 1970, declined to just 6,000 by 1990, and further declined to 5,100 in August of 2015. As the city declined, crime increased, rapid racial change occurred in Gary during the late 20th century. Non-whites were primarily restricted to live in the Midtown section just south of downtown, Gary had one of the nations first African-American mayors, Richard G. Hatcher, and hosted the ground-breaking 1972 National Black Political Convention. Since the 1930s, Gary had developed a reputation as a city due to rampant political corruption, racial violence & segregation, labor unrest. In the 1960s through the 1980s, surrounding localities such as Merrillville and Crown Point experienced rapid growth, including new homes. Owing to white flight, economic distress, and a perception of skyrocketing crime, many middle-class, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Gary had the highest percentage of African-Americans of U. S. cities with a population of 100,000 or more, 84%. This no longer applies to Gary since the population of the city has now fallen well below 100,000 residents, as of 2013, the Gary Department of Redevelopment has estimated that one-third of all homes in the city are unoccupied and/or abandoned

Richmond, Virginia

Richmond is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States. It is the center of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Greater Richmond Region and it was incorporated in 1742, and has been an independent city since 1871. As of the 2010 census, the population was 204,214, in 2015, the population was estimated to be 220,289, the Richmond Metropolitan Area has a population of 1,260,029, the third-most populous metro in the state. Richmond is located at the line of the James River,44 miles west of Williamsburg,66 miles east of Charlottesville. Surrounded by Henrico and Chesterfield counties, the city is located at the intersections of Interstate 95 and Interstate 64, Major suburbs include Midlothian to the southwest, Glen Allen to the north and west, Short Pump to the west and Mechanicsville to the northeast. The site of Richmond had been an important village of the Powhatan Confederacy, and was settled by English colonists from Jamestown in 1609. The present city of Richmond was founded in 1737 and it became the capital of the Colony and Dominion of Virginia in 1780. During the American Civil War, Richmond served as the capital of the Confederate States of America, the city entered the 20th century with one of the worlds first successful electric streetcar systems. The Jackson Ward neighborhood is a hub of African-American commerce. Richmonds economy is driven by law, finance, and government, with federal, state. Dominion Resources and MeadWestvaco, Fortune 500 companies, are headquartered in the city, in 1737, planter William Byrd II commissioned Major William Mayo to lay out the original town grid. The settlement was laid out in April 1737, and was incorporated as a town in 1742, Richmond recovered quickly from the war, and by 1782 was once again a thriving city. A permanent home for the new government, the Virginia State Capitol building, was designed by Thomas Jefferson with the assistance of Charles-Louis Clérisseau, after the American Revolutionary War, Richmond emerged as an important industrial center. The legacy of the canal boatmen is represented by the figure in the center of the city flag, on April 17,1861, five days after the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter, the legislature voted to secede from the United States and joined the Confederacy. Official action came in May, after the Confederacy promised to move its capital to Richmond. It became the target of Union armies, especially in the campaigns of 1862. The Seven Days Battles followed in late June and early July 1862, during which Union General McClellan threatened to take Richmond, three years later, as March 1865 ended, the Confederate capitol became indefensible. The Illinois Fighting Illini mens basketball team is an NCAA Division I college basketball team competing in the Big Ten Conference. Home games are played at the State Farm Center, located on the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaigns campus in Champaign, the team is currently coached by Brad Underwood, hired on 18 March 2017. Through the end of the 2013–14 season, Illinois ranks 13th all-time in winning percentage, prior to World War II breaking out, the Fighting Illini mens basketball program had achieved a status which it had never seen prior. Under the direction of coach and athletic director Douglas R. Mills. Through his first five seasons as coach, Combes led the Fighting Illini to three NCAA Final Four appearances in 1949,1951, and 1952. During his tenure as coach, Combes increased the Fighting Illinis offensive output by changing their style of play, Combes implemented Full-court press defense, causing turnovers at a high rate which translated into Fast break points. During the 1957–58 season, Mannie Jackson and Govoner Vaughn were inserted into the lineup as the first two African-Americans to start and letter in basketball at Illinois. Combes also oversaw the Illinis move from Huff Hall to Assembly Hall in 1963, however, the Illini lost to eventual national champion Loyola in the Elite Eight of the 1963 NCAA Mens Division I Basketball Tournament. The following 1964–65 season, saw several upset victories over defending national champion UCLA Bruins and national powerhouse Kentucky Wildcats at Memorial Coliseum in Lexington, Henson would lead the Fighting Illini back to their glory after having a number of difficult years following the Illinois slush fund scandal. In 21 years at Illinois, Henson garnered 423 wins and 224 losses, the 214 wins in Big Ten games were the third highest total ever at the time of his retirement. At Illinois, Henson coached many future NBA players, including Eddie Johnson, Derek Harper, Ken Norman, Nick Anderson, Kendall Gill, Kenny Battle, Marcus Liberty, Steve Bardo, and Kiwane Garris. In 1981, Illinois made strides in its return to the spotlight with a 21–8 record, a third-place Big Ten finish. The team received a bye in the NCAA Tournament and beat Wyoming, 67–65, in Los Angeles to advance to the regionals in Salt Lake City. During this season, the Fighting Illini led the Big Ten in scoring for the consecutive season and were again led by Eddie Johnson. Guards Craig Tucker and Derek Harper arrived to add backcourt punch, the top-seeded and top-ranked 1989 Illini were upset 83–81 in the Final Four on a last second basket by Michigans Sean Higgins, ending the schools deepest run in the tournament at that time. Illinois had beaten the Wolverines by 12 and 16 points in two meetings that season. The 1988–89 Illinois Fighting Illini team gained the moniker Flyin Illini by Dick Vitale during an ESPN broadcast that season, the early 1990s Illini were dominated by players such as guards Andy Kauffman, Richard Keene, and Kiwane Garris, as well as centers Shelly Clark and Deon Thomas. NC State Wolfpack men's basketball

The NC State Wolfpack mens basketball team represents North Carolina State University in NCAA Division I mens basketball competition. The Wolfpack currently competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference, of which it was a founding member, prior to joining the ACC in 1954, the Wolfpack was a member of the Southern Conference, where they won seven conference championships. As a member of the ACC, the Wolfpack has won ten conference championships, States unexpected 1983 title was one of the most memorable in NCAA history. Since 1999, the Pack has played most of its games at PNC Arena. Prior to 1999, they played at Reynolds Coliseum, NC State began varsity intercollegiate competition in mens basketball in 1911. The teams all-time record is 1, 697–1,055, the program saw its greatest success during the head coaching tenures of Everett Case, Norm Sloan, and Jim Valvano. NC State has produced some of the ACCs best players, including Tom Burleson, Rodney Monroe, Monte Towe, David Thompson, who led the Wolfpack to its first NCAA title in 1974, has been recognized as one of college basketballs greatest players. The Wolfpack has won a total of 17 conference tournament championships and 13 regular season conference titles, State has appeared in the NCAA Tournament 26 times, with three Final Four appearances and two national titles. The Wolfpack also appeared in the Final Four of the 1947 National Invitational Tournament, in 1910 Guy Bryan formed a special committee that proposed to the university administration the organization of the schools first basketball team. The program played its first official basketball game on February 16,1911 against a much more experienced squad from Wake Forest. NC State, then known as the North Carolina A&M Farmers, lost, the two teams met again five days later in Raleigh, with A&M earning its first-ever victory, 19-18. The following year, the schools athletics council officially recognized basketball as a sport, before the 1920–21 season the university changed its name from North Carolina A&M to North Carolina State College. At that time the nickname was the Tech. That season the program joined the fledgling Southern Conference as a charter member, State College changed its nickname yet again in 1923, this time to the Red Terrors. The name was drawn from a combination of the play of Rochelle Red Johnson, also in 1923, State opened its first basketball facility, Frank Thompson Gym. The gym, named in honor of an athlete from the school who died in action during World War I. Basketball positions

The five basketball positions normally employed by organized basketball teams are the point guard, the shooting guard, the small forward, the power forward, and the center. While these position names are used, most modern teams use a point guard. The rules of basketball do not mandate them, and they are not used. Typically, the point guard is the leader of the team when on the court and this position requires substantial ball handling skills and the ability to facilitate the team during a play. The shooting guard, as the name implies, is often the best shooter and they are probably capable of shooting accurately from longer distances. Generally, they also have good ball-handling skills, the small forward often has an aggressive approach to the basket when handling the ball. The center is typically the larger of the two, during the 1980s, as team strategy evolved, more specialized roles developed, resulting in the five position designations utilized today. Team strategy and available personnel, however, still dictates the positions used by a particular team, for example, the Dribble drive motion offense and the Princeton offense utilize four interchangeable guards and one center. The point guard, also known as the one, is typically the teams best ball handler and passer, therefore, they often lead their team in assists and steals. They are often quick and are able to hit shots either outside the three-point line or in the paint, point guards are looked upon as the floor general or the coach on the floor. They should study the game and game film to be able to recognize the weaknesses of the defense, good point guards increase team efficiency and generally have a high number of assists. They are often referred to as dribblers or play-makers, in the NBA, point guards are usually the shortest players on the team and are mostly 6 feet 5 inches or shorter. The shooting guard is known as the two or the off guard. Along with the forward, a shooting guard is often referred to as a wing because of its use in common positioning tactics. As the name suggests, most shooting guards are good shooters from three-point range, besides being able to shoot the ball, shooting guards tend to have good ball handling skills and the ability to drive the ball to the basket, often creating their own shots off the dribble. A versatile shooting guard will have good passing skills, allowing them to point guard responsibilities known as combo guards. In the NBA, shooting guards usually range from 6 feet 4 inches to 6 feet 7 inches, the small forward is considered to be perhaps the most versatile of the main five basketball positions. Versatility is key for small forwards because of the nature of their role and this is why the small forward and shooting guard positions are often interchangeable and referred to as wings

The Duke Blue Devils mens basketball team is the college basketball program representing Duke University. The team is fourth all-time in wins of any NCAA mens basketball program, Duke has won 5 NCAA Championships and appeared in 11 Championship Games and 16 Final Fours, and has an NCAA-best.755 NCAA tournament winning percentage. Eleven Duke players have named the National Player of the Year. Additionally, Duke has 36 players named All-Americans and 14 Academic All-Americans, Duke has been the Atlantic Coast Conference Champions a record 20 times, and also lays claim to 19 ACC regular season titles. Prior to joining the ACC, Duke won the Southern Conference championships five times. Duke has also finished the season ranked No.1 in the AP poll seven times and is second, behind only UCLA, in total weeks ranked as the number one team in the nation by the AP with 121 weeks. Additionally, the Blue Devils have the second longest streak in the AP Top 25 in history with 200 consecutive appearances from 1996 to 2007, since that designation, Duke has won two additional national titles in 2010 and 2015. The January 30 issue of The Trinity Chronicle headlined the new sport on its front page, trinitys first game ended in a loss to Wake Forest, 24–10. The game was played in the Angier B, Duke Gymnasium, later known as The Ark. The Trinity team won its first title in 1920, the championship, by beating the North Carolina State College of Agriculture. Earlier in the season they had beaten the University of North Carolina 19–18 in the first match-up between the two schools, Trinity college then became Duke University. Billy Werber, Class of 1930, became Dukes first All-American in basketball, the Gothic-style West Campus opened that year, with a new gym, later to be named for Coach Card. The Indoor Stadium opened in 1940, initially it was referred to as an Addition to the gymnasium. Part of its cost was paid for with the proceeds from the Duke football teams appearance in the 1938 Rose Bowl, in 1972 it would be named for Eddie Cameron, head coach from 1929 to 1942. In 1952, Dick Groat became the first Duke player to be named National Player of the Year, Duke left the Southern Conference to become a charter member of the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1953. The Duke team under Vic Bubas made its first appearance in the Final Four in 1963, the next year, Bubas team reached the national title game, losing to the Bruins of UCLA, who claimed 10 titles in the next 12 years. Bob Verga was Dukes star player in 1967, the basketball program won its 1000th game in 1974, making Duke only the eighth school in NCAA history to reach that figure. Atlantic Coast Conference

The ACC sponsors competition in twenty-five sports with many of its member institutions athletic programs held in high regard nationally. ACC teams and athletes have claimed dozens of championships in multiple sports throughout the conferences history. Generally, the ACCs top athletes and teams in any sport in a given year are considered to be among the top collegiate competitors in the nation. Also, the conference enjoys extensive media coverage, the ACC was one of the six collegiate power conferences, which had automatic qualifying for their football champion into the Bowl Championship Series. With the advent of the College Football Playoff in 2014, the ACC is one of five conferences with a contractual tie-in to an access bowl, the additions in recent years extended the conferences footprint into the Northeast and Midwest. The most recent expansion in 2013 saw the additions of the University of Notre Dame, the University of Pittsburgh, in 2012, the University of Marylands Board of Regents voted to withdraw from the ACC to join the Big Ten Conference effective July 1,2014. On November 28,2012, the ACCs Council of Presidents voted unanimously to invite the University of Louisville as a full member, replacing Maryland effective July 1,2014. Seven universities in the South Atlantic States were charter members of the ACC, Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, previously members of the Southern Conference, they left partially due to that leagues ban on post-season football play. After drafting a set of bylaws for the creation of a new league, the bylaws were ratified on June 14,1953, and the ACC was created, becoming the second conference formed by schools collectively withdrawing from the SoCon, after the Southeastern Conference. On December 4,1953, officials convened in Greensboro, North Carolina, and admitted Virginia, in 1960, the ACC implemented a minimum SAT score for incoming student-athletes of 750, the first conference to do so. This minimum was raised to 800 in 1964, but was struck down by a federal court in 1972. In 1971, South Carolina left the ACC to become an independent, the ACC operated with seven members until the addition of Georgia Tech from the Metro Conference on April 3,1978. The total number of member schools reached nine with the addition of Florida State, also formerly from the Metro Conference, on July 1,1991. The expansion was controversial, as Connecticut, Rutgers, Pittsburgh, and West Virginia filed lawsuits against the ACC, Miami, and Boston College for conspiring to weaken the Big East Conference. The ACC Hall of Champions opened on March 2,2011, next to the Greensboro Coliseum arena, on September 17,2011, Big East Conference members Syracuse University and the University of Pittsburgh both tendered formal written applications to the ACC to join its ranks. The two schools were accepted into the conference the day, once again expanding the conference footprint like previous expansions. Because the Big East intended to hold Pitt and Syracuse to the 27-month notice period required by league bylaws, however, on July 16,2012, the Big East and Syracuse came to an agreement that allowed Syracuse to leave the Big East on July 1,2013. Two days later, the Big East and Pittsburgh reached an identical agreement, on September 12,2012, Notre Dame agreed to join the ACC in all sports except football and hockey as the conferences first member in the Midwestern United States

The ACC Mens Basketball Tournament is the conference championship tournament in basketball for the Atlantic Coast Conference. The tournament has been every year since 1954, the ACCs first season. It is a tournament and seeding is based on regular season records. The winner, declared conference champion, receives the automatic bid to the NCAA mens basketball tournament. An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, the North Carolina Museum of History is located in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina. Special programs include educational programs for children and families as well as demonstrations, music concerts. The Museum Shop features an assortment of North Carolina–made crafts and products, the museum is a part of the Division of State History Museums, Office of Archives and History, an agency of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources. Frederick Augustus Olds, known as the “father” of the North Carolina Museum of History, on December 5,1902, Olds merged his large private collection with the collection owned and displayed in a room of the State Museum. The assortment of historical artifacts became known as the Hall of History and was opened to the public, the hall’s 37 cases contained items as various as a studded shoe buckle owned by James Iredell to the death mask of Confederate General Robert Hoke. The hall was moved, in 1939, to the Education Building, across from the northwest corner of Union Square. That move took place in 1968, on June 16,1988, the State of North Carolina broke ground at 5 East Edenton Street to begin construction of a new, dedicated building for the museum. Located in part of the block between the State Capitol and the Legislative Building, the permanent home was completed in 1994 for more than $29 million. The exhibit, originally produced by Historic Oak View County Park in Raleigh, was supplemented with Depression-era artifacts from the Museum of History collection, Museum Sleuths, Whatchamacallits and Thingamajigs, This exhibit featured 21 unusual objects from the museum’s collection that befuddled and bemused. Earley, THJHA inspires and empowers North Carolina students to discover local and state history—in an active, hands-on way. The association also encourages junior historians to share what they learn, many projects are entered into contests and shared during the THJHA Annual Convention in Raleigh. Award-winning projects often become a part of the gallery, History in Every Direction. Authorized by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1953, THJHA is a network of clubs across the state, with members in grades 4–12. Clubs may be sponsored by public, private, or home schools, or by organizations such as museums and historical societies, 4-H and FFA groups. Clubs can be any size, from one student and one adviser to hundreds of students, THJHA staff at the museum provide support and resources that include a semiannual student magazine Tar Heel Junior Historian. The National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, located in Kansas City, Missouri, is a hall of fame and museum dedicated to mens college basketball. The museum is a portion of the College Basketball Experience created by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. The hall is meant as a complement to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, on November 17,2006 the NABC honored around 180 players, coaches and other notable contributors to college basketball by inducting them into the founding class of the Hall of Fame. Oscar Robertson, Bill Russell, Dean Smith, John Wooden, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts has indicated it will help with the exhibits. The other interactive portions of the College Basketball Experience are called The Entry Experience, The Fan Experience, the NABC recently renamed the Guardians Classic college tournament the CBE Classic to help promote it

The history of basketball is traced back to a YMCA International Training School, known today as Springfield College, located in Springfield, Massachusetts. The date of the first formal basketball game played at the Springfield YMCA Training School under Naismiths rules is generally given as December 21,1891, Basketball began to spread to college campuses by 1893. Governing bodies in Canada include U Sports and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association, each of these various organizations are subdivided into from one to three divisions based on the number and level of scholarships that may be provided to the athletes. The first basketball games in the United States were played at YMCAs in 1891 and 1892, by 1893, the game was being played on college campuses. The original rules for basketball were very different from todays modern rules of the sport, in the beginning James Naismith established 13 original rules, The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands. The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands, but never with the fist, a player cannot run with the ball. The player must throw it from the spot on which he catches it, the ball must be held by the hands. The arms or body must not be used for holding it, no shouldering, holding, pushing, striking, or tripping in any way of an opponent is allowed. A foul will be called when a player is seen striking at the ball with the fist, or when violations of rules 3 and 4, if either side makes three consecutive fouls it shall count as a goal for the opponents. A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from the grounds into the basket and stays there, if the ball rests on the edges, and the opponent moves the basket, it shall count as a goal. When the ball out of bounds, it shall be thrown into the field. In case of dispute the umpire shall throw it straight into the field, the thrower-in is allowed five seconds. If he holds it longer, it shall go to the opponent, if any side persists in delaying the game, the umpire shall call a foul on them. The umpire shall be the judge of the men and shall note the fouls and he shall have power to disqualify men according to rule 5. The referee shall be judge of the ball and shall decide when the ball is in play, in bounds, to side it belongs. He shall decide when a goal has been made and keep account of the goals, the time shall be two fifteen-minute halves, with five minutes rest between. Duke University is an American private research university located in Durham, North Carolina. Founded by Methodists and Quakers in the town of Trinity in 1838. In 1924, tobacco and electric power industrialist James Buchanan Duke established The Duke Endowment, at time the institution changed its name to honor his deceased father. Dukes campus spans over 8,600 acres on three campuses in Durham as well as a marine lab in Beaufort. Duke started in 1838 as Browns Schoolhouse, a subscription school founded in Randolph County in the present-day town of Trinity. Organized by the Union Institute Society, a group of Methodists and Quakers, the academy was renamed Normal College in 1851 and then Trinity College in 1859 because of support from the Methodist Church. Carr donated land in 1892 for the original Durham campus, which is now known as East Campus, in 1924 Washington Dukes son, James B. Lew Wallace High School was a four-year public high school of the Gary Community School Corporation in Gary, Indiana, United States. The faculty included nearly 65 teachers, in 1926 the 45th Avenue School of Gary, Indiana was officially named Lew Wallace High School named after Lew Wallace. The A and B wings of Lew Wallace were constructed in 1933, the most recent addition includes the Richard Polk Gymnasium, which was opened in 1972. During a period of time, the school served K-12 students, the school offered community recreation programs on weekends. As of 2014, the school was known as Lew Wallace Science Technology Engineering Mathematics Academy. Athletic programs included baseball, basketball, football, and track, on Tuesday, June 3,2014, the Gary School Board voted 4-2 to close Lew Wallace, along with 5 other schools. The Fighting Illini are the intercollegiate athletic teams of the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. The university offers 10 mens and 11 womens varsity sports, the Fighting Illini lay claim to over twenty-five National Championships dating back to 1900. The Universitys Division of Intercollegiate Athletics administers the official athletics teams of the University, all of the Universitys athletics teams participate in the NCAAs Division I, and form the Big Ten Conference with 13 other primarily Midwestern universities. The football team participates in a subdivision within the Division I known as the Football Bowl Subdivision, the mens Cross Country team carries the title for Big Ten Champions in 1921,1947 and 1984. North Carolina State University is a public research university located in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States. It is part of the University of North Carolina system and is a land, sea, the university forms one of the corners of the Research Triangle together with Duke University in Durham and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The North Carolina General Assembly founded the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, now NC State, on March 7,1887, Today, NC State has an enrollment of more than 34,000 students, making it the largest university in the Carolinas. Everett Norris Case, nicknamed Gray Fox, was a basketball coach most notable for his tenure at North Carolina State University, from 1946 to 1964. Born in Anderson, Indiana, Case graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1923 and he compiled a 726-75 record while coaching 23 years in high school basketball, including winning 4 Indiana state championships while coaching in Frankfort, Indiana. Frankforts Case Arena is named after him, Case is one of only five coaches to win at least 4 state titles in Indiana basketball. Case enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1941 and he was commissioned a senior-grade lieutenant and reported to Annapolis for a four-week training course. He also served as director at the Alameda Naval Air Station. In 1943, DePauw University began a naval preparatory school. An abbreviated basketball schedule was used, and Case, now a lieutenant commander, upon leaving the Navy in 1946, Case assumed coaching duties at N. C. In 18 years, he compiled a 377-134 record—still the best in school history and he won nine straight conference titles from 1946 to 1955. He added a fourth in 1959, Case himself was aptly rewarded, earning three ACC Coach of the Year awards, in 1954,1955 and 1958. Cases teams finished third in the 1947 NIT and third in the 1950 NCAA Tournament, the ACC Tournaments Most Valuable Player award is named in his honor. State had already begun construction on Reynolds Coliseum in 1941, Case persuaded the administration to build a 12, 400-seat arena, instead of the 10, 000-seat facility originally planned. The ACCs basketball tournament was largely Cases idea, with Reynolds Coliseum hosting the first 13 ACC tournaments from 1954 through 1966. It was Cases idea to get the ACC to recognize the tournament winner as the conference champion—and thus the winner of the conferences berth in the NCAA tournament. From 1949 to 1960, it hosted the Dixie Classic. Cases teams went on to win seven Dixie Classic titles, when Case came to Raleigh, North Carolina was, like most states in the South, enraptured by college football. However, he is credited with making basketball a craze in the state. For example, in his first year in Raleigh, the fire marshal canceled a game because people were spilling onto the floor of tiny Thompson Gymnasium and climbing in through windows. The Southern Conference is a collegiate athletic conference affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I. Southern Conference football teams compete in the Football Championship Subdivision, member institutions are located in the states of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. The Southern Conference ranks as the fifth-oldest major college conference in the United States. Among conferences currently in operation, the Big Ten and Missouri Valley are indisputably older, the Pac-12 Conference did not operate under its current charter until 1959, but claims the history of the Pacific Coast Conference, founded in 1915, as its own. The Southwest Conference was founded in 1914, but ceased operation in 1996 once the Big 12 Conference began play, the Southern Conference is considered one of the stronger football conferences in the Football Championship Subdivision and is considered a mid-major conference in basketball. In 2015, Furman defeated UCF 16–15 and The Citadel topped South Carolina 23–22 for their win over the Gamecocks in the past three meetings. The SoCon also frequently sees multiple teams selected to participate in the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, talks of a new conference for southern athletics had started as early as fall of 1920. The conference was formed on February 25,1921 in Atlanta as fourteen member institutions split from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association, in 1922, six more universities – Florida, LSU, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tulane, and Vanderbilt joined the conference. The first year of competition for the conference was in 1922, the new rules banned freshman play. Later additions included Sewanee, Virginia Military Institute, and Duke, the SoCon is particularly notable for having spawned two other major conferences. In 1932, the 13 schools located south and west of the Appalachians all departed the SoCon to form the Southeastern Conference, in 1953, seven additional schools withdrew from the SoCon to form the Atlantic Coast Conference. The SoCon became the first league to hold a basketball tournament to decide a conference champion. Although first played in 1921, it did not become official until 1922, held at the Municipal Auditorium in Atlanta from February 24 – March 2,1922, the first meeting was won by North Carolina who defeated non-member Mercer in the Finals 40-25. The SoCon Basketball Tournament continues as the nations oldest conference tournament, the next-oldest tournament overall is the SEC Mens Basketball Tournament, founded in 1933, but that event was suspended after its 1952 edition and did not resume until 1979. The all-sports membership changed to 10 schools in 2014 following the departure of Appalachian State, Davidson, Elon, and Georgia Southern, plus the arrival of East Tennessee State, Mercer, the current football membership stands at nine. UNC Greensboro does not sponsor football, while ETSU, which relaunched its previously dormant football program in 2015, on January 9,2014, the SoCon and Atlantic Sun Conference announced a new alliance in lacrosse that took effect with the 2014–15 school year. Under its terms, sponsorship of mens lacrosse shifted from the ASUN to the SoCon, bellarmine, which had announced it would join the ASUN for mens lacrosse for the 2015 season, instead joined the SoCon. North Carolina is a state in the southeastern region of the United States. The state borders South Carolina and Georgia to the south, Tennessee to the west, Virginia to the north, North Carolina is the 28th most extensive and the 9th most populous of the U. S. states. The state is divided into 100 counties, the most populous municipality is Charlotte, which is the second largest banking center in the United States after New York City. The state has a range of elevations, from sea level on the coast to 6,684 feet at Mount Mitchell. The climate of the plains is strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the falls in the humid subtropical climate zone. More than 300 miles from the coast, the western, mountainous part of the state has a highland climate. North Carolina is bordered by South Carolina on the south, Georgia on the southwest, Tennessee on the west, Virginia on the north, the United States Census Bureau places North Carolina in the South Atlantic division of the southern region. So many ships have been lost off Cape Hatteras that the area is known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic, the most famous of these is the Queen Annes Revenge, which went aground in Beaufort Inlet in 1718. The coastal plain transitions to the Piedmont region along the Atlantic Seaboard fall line, the Piedmont region of central North Carolina is the states most populous region, containing the six largest cities in the state by population. It consists of rolling countryside frequently broken by hills or low mountain ridges. The Piedmont ranges from about 300 feet in elevation in the east to about 1,500 feet in the west, the western section of the state is part of the Appalachian Mountain range. Among the subranges of the Appalachians located in the state are the Great Smoky Mountains, Blue Ridge Mountains, the Black Mountains are the highest in the eastern United States, and culminate in Mount Mitchell at 6,684 feet, the highest point east of the Mississippi River. North Carolina has 17 major river basins, the five basins west of the Blue Ridge Mountains flow to the Gulf of Mexico, while the remainder flow to the Atlantic Ocean. Of the 17 basins,11 originate within the state of North Carolina, but only four are contained entirely within the states border – the Cape Fear, the Neuse, the White Oak, and the Tar-Pamlico basin. Elevation above sea level is most responsible for temperature change across the state, the climate is also influenced by the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf Stream, especially in the coastal plain. These influences tend to cause warmer winter temperatures along the coast, the coastal plain averages around 1 inch of snow or ice annually, and in many years, there may be no snow or ice at all. Dean Edwards Smith was an American mens college basketball head coach. Called a coaching legend by the Basketball Hall of Fame, he coached for 36 years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Smith coached from 1961 to 1997 and retired with 879 victories, which was the NCAA Division I mens basketball record at that time. Smith had the 9th highest winning percentage of any college basketball coach. During his tenure as coach, North Carolina won two national championships and appeared in 11 Final Fours. Smith played college basketball at the University of Kansas, where he won a championship in 1952 playing for Hall of fame coach Phog Allen. Smith was known for running a program and having a high graduation rate. Smith coached and worked with people at North Carolina who achieved notable success in basketball, as players, coaches. Smith retired in 1997, saying that he was not able to give the team the same level of enthusiasm that he had given it for years, Dean Smith was born in Emporia, Kansas, on February 28,1931. Both of his parents were school teachers. Smiths father, Alfred, coached the Emporia High Spartans basketball team to the 1934 state title in Kansas and this 1934 team was notable for having the first African American basketball player in Kansas tournament history. While at Topeka High School, Smith lettered in all four years and was named all-state in basketball as a senior. Smiths interest in sports was not limited only to basketball, Smith also played quarterback for his high school football team and catcher for the high school baseball team. After graduating from school, Smith attended the University of Kansas on an academic scholarship where he majored in mathematics. While at Kansas, Smith continued his interest in sports by playing varsity basketball, varsity baseball, and freshman football, during his time on the varsity basketball team, Kansas won the national championship in 1952 and were NCAA tournament finalists in 1953. Smiths basketball coach during his time at Kansas was Phog Allen, after graduation, Smith served as assistant coach at Kansas in the 1953–54 season. Smith next served a stint in the United States Air Force in Germany, later working as a coach of United States Air Force Academys baseball. Yet, Smiths big break would come in the United States, in 1958, North Carolina coach Frank McGuire asked Smith to join his staff as an assistant coach. Art Heyman

Arthur Bruce Art Heyman was an American professional basketball player. Heyman, who was Jewish, was born in New York City, at the last moment, however, Heyman changed his mind and agreed to play for the Tar Heels greatest rivals, the Duke Blue Devils. During one of the Duke-North Carolina freshman games, North Carolina freshman Dieter Krause attacked Heyman, Heyman needed five stitches after the attack. During his sophomore season, Heyman starred for the varsity team, on February 4,1961, the Duke and North Carolina freshman teams had played the first game of the double header. There were multiple fights during the game, and North Carolina had finished the game only three players on the floor. Brown threw the ball and then a punch at Heyman, touching off a general melee, the melee lasted about ten minutes, and despite Heyman being ejected for fighting, his 36 points had given Duke the victory, 81–77. Brown, Walsh and Heyman were all suspended for the remainder of the ACC season, Heyman was allowed to play in non-conference games, and the ACC Tournament. At the time, only the champion was admitted to the NCAA Tournament. Heyman finished the season averaging 25 points and nearly 11 rebounds per game and he also won numerous national plaudits, being named to the UPI and AP Third-Team All American squad. Heyman was once again voted to the All-ACC Basketball first team, however, during Heymans 1963 senior year, Heyman unleashed his best season yet. Duke won the regular season title, but to make the NCAA tournament. Their first game was against 8th seed Virginia, a game in which the Blue Devils won handily, in the tournament semi finals, the Blue Devils defeated the North Carolina State Wolfpack, 82–65. In the final, they had a chance to get revenge for the 1961 tournament final loss, Heyman and Duke avenged that 1961 loss, defeating the Demon Deacons 68–57, earning the Blue Devils the right to play in the 1963 NCAA Tournament. In the East Regional final, Heyman and the Blue Devils defeated Saint Josephs University, 73–59, despite Heymans 29 points and 12 rebounds in the semi-finals, the Blue Devils succumbed 94-75 to eventual national champion Loyola of Chicago. In the consolation game, Heyman completed his career when Duke defeated Oregon State 85-63. In this game, Heyman scored 22 points, and added seven rebounds, Art Heyman was also named MVP of the 1963 NCAA tournament, even though Duke finished third. Heyman again won the plaudits of the sportswriters, winning the AP National Player of the Year award, the ACC Player of the Year award, and the Oscar Robertson Trophy. Heyman averaged 25.1 points per game and scoring 1,984 points while at Duke University, Heyman is one of three athletes in ACC History to have been elected unanimously to the All-ACC Mens Basketball team three times, along with David Thompson and Tyler Hansbrough

Lexington, consolidated with Fayette County, is the second-largest city in Kentucky and the 61st largest in the United States. Known as the Horse Capital of the World, it is the heart of the states Bluegrass region, with a mayor-alderman form of government, it is one of two cities in Kentucky designated by the state as first-class, the other is the states largest city of Louisville. In the 2016 U. S. Census Estimate, the population was 318,449, anchoring a metropolitan area of 506,751 people. Lexington ranks tenth among US cities in college education rate, with 39. 5% of residents having at least a bachelors degree and this area of fertile soil and abundant wildlife was long occupied by varying tribes of Native Americans. European explorers began to trade with them but settlers did not come in force until the late 18th century, Lexington was founded by European Americans in June 1775, in what was then considered Fincastle County, Virginia,17 years before Kentucky became a state. A party of frontiersmen, led by William McConnell, camped on the Middle Fork of Elkhorn Creek at the site of the present-day McConnell Springs, upon hearing of the colonists victory in the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19,1775, they named their campsite Lexington. It was the first of what would be many American places to be named after the Massachusetts town, the risk of Indian attacks delayed permanent settlement for four years. In 1779, during the American Revolutionary War, Col. Robert Patterson and 25 companions came from Fort Harrod and they built cabins and a stockade, establishing a settlement known as Bryan Station. In 1780, Lexington was made the seat of Virginias newly organized Fayette County, colonists defended it against a British and allied Shawnee attack in 1782, during the last part of the American Revolutionary War. The town was chartered on May 6,1782, by an act of the Virginia General Assembly, the First African Baptist Church was founded c. 1790 by Peter Durrett, a Baptist preacher and slave held by Joseph Craig. Durrett helped guide The Travelling Church, a migration of several hundred pioneers led by the preacher Lewis Craig and Captain William Ellis from Orange County. It is the oldest black Baptist congregation in Kentucky and the third oldest in the United States, I would suppose it contains about five hundred dwelling houses, many of them elegant and three stories high. The country around Lexington for many miles in every direction, is equal in beauty and fertility to anything the imagination can paint and is already in a state of cultivation. Residents have fondly continued to refer to Lexington as The Athens of the West since Espys poem dedicated to the city, in the early 19th century, planter John Wesley Hunt became the first millionaire west of the Alleghenies. London Ferrill, second preacher of First African Baptist, was one of three clergy who stayed in the city to serve the suffering victims, additional cholera outbreaks occurred in 1848–49 and the early 1850s. Cholera was spread by using contaminated water supplies, but its transmission was not understood in those years. Often the wealthier people would flee town for outlying areas to try to avoid the spread of disease, planters held slaves for use as field hands, laborers, artisans, and domestic servants. Jeffrey Vincent Jeff Mullins is an American retired basketball player and coach. He played college basketball with the Duke Blue Devils and in the National Basketball Association with the St. Louis Hawks, Mullins served as the head basketball coach at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte from 1985 to 1996. Mullins, a native of Lexington, Kentucky, was a very talented 64 forward in high school, after graduation, he attended Duke University from 1960 through 1964, where he averaged 21.9 points per game for his career. His #44 Duke jersey was retired in 1994, in 2002, Mullins was named to the ACC 50th Anniversary mens basketball team as one of the fifty greatest players in Atlantic Coast Conference history. Mullins was a member of the United States Olympic basketball team won the gold at the 1964 Summer Olympics. Mullins was taken by the St. Louis Hawks in the first round of the 1964 NBA draft and he helped the Warriors to the 1967 Western Conference title and the 1975 NBA championship. Upon his retirement in 1976 he had amassed a total of 13,017 points for a career average of 16.2 points per game. In 1985, Mullins was hired as the mens basketball coach. The program had struggled since making the NCAA Final Four in 1977 and his 182 victories over eleven seasons stood as a school record until Bobby Lutz, Mullins former assistant coach, surpassed that total in 2008. The University of Kentucky has fifteen libraries on campus, young Library, a federal depository, hosting subjects related to social sciences, humanities, and life sciences collections. In recent years, the university has focused expenditures increasingly on research, the directive mandated that the university become a Top 20 public research institution, in terms of an overall ranking to be determined by the university itself, by the year 2020. Courses were offered at Ashland, The Henry Clay Estate, three years later, James Kennedy Patterson became the first president of the land-grant university and the first degree was awarded. In 1876, the university began to offer degree programs. Two years later, A&M separated from Kentucky University, which is now Transylvania University, for the new school, Lexington donated a 52-acre park and fair ground, which became the core of UKs present campus. A&M was initially a male-only institution, but began to admit women in 1880, in 1892, the official colors of the university, royal blue and white, were adopted. An earlier color set, blue and light yellow, was adopted earlier at a Kentucky-Centre College football game on December 19,1891, the particular hue of blue was determined from a necktie, which was used to demonstrate the color of royal blue. On February 15,1882, Administration Building was the first building of three completed on the present campus, three years later, the college formed the Agricultural Experiment Station, which researches issues relating to agribusiness, food processing, nutrition, water and soil resources and the environment. This was followed up by the creation of the universitys Agricultural Extension Service in 1910, the extension service became a model of the federally mandated programs that were required beginning in 1914. Patterson Hall, the schools first womens dormitory, was constructed in 1904, residents had to cross a swampy depression, where the Student Center now stands, to reach central campus. Four years later, the name was changed to the State University, Lexington, Kentucky upon reaching university status. The university led to the creation of the College of Home Economics in 1916, the College of Commerce was established in 1925, known today as the Gatton College of Business and Economics. In 1929, Memorial Hall was completed, dedicated to the 2,756 Kentuckians who died in World War I and this was followed up by the new King Library, which opened in 1931 and was named for a long-time library director, Margaret I. The universitys graduate and professional programs became racially integrated in 1949 when Lyman T. Johnson, African Americans would not be allowed to attend as undergraduates until 1954, following the US Supreme Courts Brown v. Board of Education decision. In 1939, Governor Happy Chandler appointed the first woman trustee on the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees and she served from 1939 to 1960. Adolph Rupp

Adolph Frederick Rupp was one of the most successful coaches in the history of American college basketball. Rupp is ranked fifth in total victories by a mens NCAA Division I college coach, Rupp is also second among all mens college coaches in all-time winning percentage, trailing only Clair Bee. Rupp was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on April 13,1969, Rupp was born September 2,1901 in Halstead, Kansas to Heinrich Rupp, a German immigrant, and Anna Lichi, an Austrian immigrant. The fourth of six children, Rupp grew up on a 163-acre farm that his parents had homesteaded and he began playing basketball as a young child, with the help of his mother who made a ball for him by stuffing rags into a gunnysack. Mother sewed it up and somehow made it round, he recalled in 1977, Rupp was a star for the Halstead High School basketball team, one of the first in the area to play with a real basketball. He averaged 19 points a game, former teammates described Rupp as the teams unofficial coach. After high school, Rupp attended the University of Kansas from 1919 to 1923 and he worked part-time at the student Jayhawk Cafe to help pay his college expenses. He was a reserve on the team under legendary coach Forrest Phog Allen from 1919 to 1923. Assisting Allen during that time was his coach and inventor of the game of basketball, James Naismith. In Rupps junior and senior seasons, Kansas had outstanding basketball squads. Later, both of these standout Kansas teams would be awarded the Helms National Championship, recognizing the Jayhawks as the top team in the nation during those seasons and he received a MA from Teachers College, Columbia University. Rupp began his career in coaching by accepting a job at Burr Oak High School. After a one-year stay, Rupp moved on to Marshalltown, Iowa, where he coached wrestling and he did lead the Marshalltown team to a state wrestling title in 1926. In 1926–30, Rupp accepted the head coaching position at Freeport High School. During his four years at Freeport, Rupp compiled a record of 66-21, while at Freeport High School Rupp started William Mose Mosely, the first African-American to play basketball at Freeport and the second to graduate from the school. University of Illinois head basketball coach Craig Ruby was invited to speak at the banquet following the 1929–30 season. Ruby informed Rupp of the Kentucky head coaching job and followed up by recommending him for the job, during his time in Freeport, Rupp met his future wife, Esther Schmidt. Rupp coached the University of Kentucky mens basketball team from 1930 to 1972, there, he gained the nicknames, Baron of the Bluegrass, and The Man in the Brown Suit

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons mens basketball team participates in the Atlantic Coast Conference and their homecourt is the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Wake Forest made the Final Four in 1962 and through the years, the Demon Deacons have won the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament four times, in 1961,1962,1995, and 1996. Wake Forests biggest rivalries are with the North Carolina Tar Heels, the Duke Blue Devils, the most recent coach is Danny Manning, who was hired on April 4,2014. It was named after Lawrence Joel, an Army medic from Winston-Salem who was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1967 for action in Vietnam on November 8,1965. The memorial was designed by James Ford in New York, and it is home to Wake Forests mens and womens basketball teams, and is adjacent to the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds. The arena replaced the old Winston-Salem Memorial Coliseum, which was torn down for the LJVM Coliseums construction, banners hang in the rafters commemorating past players retired numbers and the late Skip Prosser. There are also banners recognizing the Demon Deacons past NCAA and ACC successes, the arena is home to the Screamin Demon student section. Wake Forests black and gold tie-dyed apparel and Zombie Nation were both implemented upon Prossers arrival at Wake Forest, the Miller Center is the basketball teams on-campus home. It houses the locker rooms, team meeting rooms, coaches offices. The players utilize the Miller Center for practice, meetings, academic work, the Dave Budd Practice Gym has a full-length court, six stand alone baskets, bleacher seating and banners honoring some of the best players to ever don the black and gold. On March 5,2014, Wake Forest announced a $7.5 million donation from WFU alum Bob McCreary towards a 95,000 square foot sports performance center. The Sports Performance Center is designed to meet the needs of more than 350 student-athletes who compete in 18 sports. The building will be located on Wake Forests main campus near the Miller Center, the building will house the football programs headquarters and will provide invaluable resources to the basketball program as well. The sports performance center will feature a very robust strength and conditioning facility that will provide all athletes ample room, the Demon Deacons have appeared in the NCAA Tournament 23 times. National Collegiate Athletic Association

The National Collegiate Athletic Association is a non-profit association which regulates athletes of 1,281 institutions, conferences, organizations, and individuals. It also organizes the programs of many colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. The organization is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 2014, the NCAA generated almost a billion dollars in revenue. 80 to 90% of this revenue was due to the Division I Mens Basketball Tournament and this revenue is then distributed back into various organizations and institutions across the United States. In August 1973, the current three-division setup of Division I, Division II, under NCAA rules, Division I and Division II schools can offer scholarships to athletes for playing a sport. Division III schools may not offer any athletic scholarships, generally, larger schools compete in Division I and smaller schools in II and III. Division I football was divided into I-A and I-AA in 1978. Subsequently, the term Division I-AAA was briefly added to delineate Division I schools which do not field a football program at all, in 2006, Divisions I-A and I-AA were respectively renamed the Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision. Inter-collegiate sports began in the US in 1852 when crews from Harvard University, as other sports emerged, notably football and basketball, many of these same concepts and standards were adopted. Football, in particular, began to emerge as a marquee sport, the IAAUS was officially established on March 31,1906, and took its present name, the NCAA, in 1910. For several years, the NCAA was a group and rules-making body, but in 1921, the first NCAA national championship was conducted. Gradually, more rules committees were formed and more championships were created, a series of crises brought the NCAA to a crossroads after World War II. The Sanity Code – adopted to establish guidelines for recruiting and financial aid – failed to curb abuses, postseason football games were multiplying with little control, and member schools were increasingly concerned about how the new medium of television would affect football attendance. The complexity of problems and the growth in membership and championships demonstrated the need for full-time professional leadership. Walter Byers, previously an executive assistant, was named executive director in 1951. Byers wasted no time placing his stamp on the Association, as college athletics grew, the scope of the nations athletics programs diverged, forcing the NCAA to create a structure that recognized varying levels of emphasis. In 1973, the Associations membership was divided into three legislative and competitive divisions – I, II, and III, five years later in 1978, Division I members voted to create subdivisions I-A and I-AA in football. Until the 1980s, the association did not offer womens athletics, instead, the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, with nearly 1000 member schools, governed womens collegiate sports in the United States

Sun Belt Conference

The Sun Belt Conference is a collegiate athletic conference that has been affiliated with the NCAAs Division I since 1976. Originally a non-football conference, the Sun Belt began sponsoring football in 2001 and its football teams participate in the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. The 12 member institutions of the Sun Belt are distributed primarily across the southern United States, over the next ten years the conference would add Western Kentucky University, Old Dominion University, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Virginia Commonwealth University. New Orleans was forced out of the league in 1980 due to its small on-campus gymnasium that the Conference did not deem suitable for Conference competition, UNO competed as an independent before joining the newly formed American South Conference in 1987. After the 1990-91 basketball season, all members of the Sun Belt, except Western Kentucky, South Alabama, although the American South was the larger conference, the merged league retained the Sun Belt name. Central Florida left the following the 1991-92 academic year. Lamar, Texas–Pan American, and Jacksonville departed at the end of the 1997-98 academic year, Florida International University joined the Sun Belt in 1998, and the University of Denver was added in 1999. Louisiana Tech departed after the 2000-01 academic year and these new members gave the Sun Belt seven football playing members in their first season, as Arkansas State and Louisiana–Lafayette were already full members which sponsored football. Another Big West school, Utah State University, was added as a member in 2003, then departed in 2005 with Idaho. In 2004, Troy University became a member until the Trojans joined the conference in all sports. In 2005, Florida Atlantic became a member until the Owls joined the conference in all sports. In 2006, Louisiana–Monroe joined the conference as a full member when the Warhawks left their former home. Longtime Sun Belt member Western Kentucky joined the Sun Belts football conference in 2009 after its Board of Regents voted to upgrade the schools program to Division I FBS. On November 11,2009, New Orleans announced they were investigating a move from Division I to the NCAAs Division III, in order to maintain athletic scholarships, UNO instead opted for entry into Division II. On April 20,2011, UNO officially received approval from the NCAA Division II Membership Committee. On April 9,2012, Georgia State, one of the members of the Sun Belt Conference. On May 2,2012, Texas State University announced it would leave the WAC after just one year, at the press conference to announce Texas States addition, Sun Belt Commissioner Karl Benson also hinted that more changes could be on the way for the conference. On May 25,2012, the announced that the University of Texas at Arlington had accepted an invitation to join the conference
