Lemon Henry Blind Lemon Jefferson was an American blues and gospel singer, songwriter, and musician. He was one of the most popular singers of the 1920s and has been called the Father of the Texas Blues. Jeffersons performances were distinctive because of his voice and the originality of his guitar playing. His recordings sold well, but he was not an influence on younger blues singers of his generation. Later blues and rock and roll musicians, however, did attempt to both his songs and his musical style. Jefferson was born blind, near Coutchman, Texas and he was the youngest of seven children born to Alex and Clarissa Jefferson, who were sharecroppers. Disputes regarding the date of his birth derive from contradictory census records, by 1900, the family was farming southeast of Streetman, Texas, and his birth date is indicated as September 1893 in the 1900 census. The 1910 census, taken in May, before his birthday, further confirms his year of birth as 1893 and indicated that the family was farming northwest of Wortham, near his birthplace. In his 1917 draft registration, Jefferson gave his date as October 26,1894, further stating that he then lived in Dallas, Texas. In the 1920 census, he is recorded as having returned to Freestone County and was living with his half-brother, Kit Banks, Jefferson began playing the guitar in his early teens and soon after he began performing at picnics and parties. He became a musician, playing in East Texas towns in front of barbershops. Jefferson was one of the earliest and most prominent figures in the blues movement developing in the Deep Ellum section of Dallas. It is likely that he moved to Deep Ellum on a permanent basis by 1917. Jefferson taught Walker the basics of playing guitar in exchange for Walkers occasional services as a guide. By the early 1920s, Jefferson was earning money for his musical performances to support a wife and, possibly. However, firm evidence of his marriage and children is unavailable, the first self-accompanied solo performer of a self-composed blues song was Lee Morse, whose Mail Man Blues was recorded on October 7,1924. Jeffersons music is uninhibited and represented the sounds of everyday life, from a honky-tonk to a country picnic, to street corner blues. Leopold Stokowski

Leopold Anthony Stokowski was a British conductor of Polish and Irish descent. One of the conductors of the early and mid-20th Century, he is best known for his long association with the Philadelphia Orchestra. He was especially noted for his conducting style that spurned the traditional baton. He was also the founder of the All-American Youth Orchestra, the New York City Symphony, the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra, there is some mystery surrounding his early life. For example, he spoke with an unusual, non-British accent, though he was born and raised in London. On occasion, Stokowski gave his year of birth as 1887 instead of 1882, as in a letter to the Hugo Riemann Musiklexicon in 1950, in Germany there was a corresponding rumour that his original name was simply Stock. However, Stokowskis birth certificate gives his birth on 18 April 1882, at 13 Upper Marylebone Street, Stokowski was named after his Polish-born grandfather Leopold, who died in the English county of Surrey on 13 January 1879, at the age of 49. Samaroff, born Lucy Mary Agnes Hickenlooper, was from Galveston, Texas, for professional and career reasons, she urged him to emphasize only the Polish part of his background once he became a resident of the United States. He studied at the Royal College of Music, where he first enrolled in 1896 at the age of thirteen, in his later life in the US, Stokowski would perform six of the nine symphonies composed by his fellow organ student Ralph Vaughan Williams. Stokowski sang in the choir of the St Marylebone Parish Church, by age 16, Stokowski was elected to a membership in the Royal College of Organists. In 1900, he formed the choir of St. Marys Church, Charing Cross Road, in 1902, he was appointed the organist and choir director of St. Jamess Church, Piccadilly. He also attended The Queens College, Oxford, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1903, in 1905, Stokowski began work in New York City as the organist and choir director of St. Bartholomews Church. He was very popular among the parishioners, who included members of the Vanderbilt family, Stokowski moved to Paris for additional study in conducting. There he heard that the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra would be needing a new conductor when it returned from a long sabbatical, Stokowski was selected over the other applicants, and took up his conducting duties in late 1909. Stokowskis conducting debut in London took place the week on 18 May with the New Symphony Orchestra at Queens Hall. His engagement as new permanent conductor in Cincinnati was a great success and he introduced the concept of pops concerts and, starting with his first season, he began championing the work of living composers. His concerts included performances of music by Richard Strauss, Sibelius, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Glazunov, Saint-Saëns and he conducted the American premieres of new works by such composers as Elgar, whose 2nd Symphony was first presented there on 24 November 1911. Philadelphia Orchestra

The Philadelphia Orchestra is an American symphony orchestra, based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. From its founding until 2001, the Philadelphia Orchestra gave its concerts at the Academy of Music, the orchestra continues to own the Academy, and returns there one week per year for the Academy of Musics annual gala concert and concerts for school children. The Philadelphia Orchestras summer home is the Mann Center for the Performing Arts and it also has summer residencies at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, and since July 2007 at the Bravo. Vail Valley Festival in Vail, Colorado, the orchestra also performs an annual series of concerts at Carnegie Hall. From its earliest days the orchestra has been active in the studio, making extensive numbers of recordings, primarily for RCA Victor. The orchestras music director is Yannick Nézet-Séguin, since 2012, the current president and chief executive officer of the Philadelphia Orchestra Association is Allison Vulgamore, since 2010. Charles Dutoit, chief conductor of the orchestra from 2008 to 2012, has the title of conductor laureate, the orchestra was founded in 1900 by Fritz Scheel, who also acted as its first conductor. The orchestra had its beginnings with a group of musicians led by the pianist F. Cresson Schell. In 1904, Richard Strauss guest conducted the orchestra in a program of his compositions, additionally in 1906, the orchestra traveled to the White House to perform in an exclusive concert. In February 1907, Leandro Campanari took over and served as conductor for a short time during Scheels illness. A flutist in the orchestra, August Rodemann, had stood in before Campanaris arrival and he started sabotaging the performances and Campanari was obliged to remove himself from a bad situation. In 1907, Karl Pohlig became music director and served until 1912, New music he programmed was unpopular with audiences, and revelations that he had an extra-marital affair with his secretary caused outrage. The orchestra cancelled his contract and gave him a salary in severance to avoid a suit from Pohlig alleging a conspiracy to oust him. Leopold Stokowski became music director in 1912 and brought the orchestra to national prominence, under his guidance, the orchestra gained a reputation for virtuosity, and developed what is known as the Philadelphia Sound. Stokowski left the orchestra in 1941, and did not return as a guest conductor for nearly 20 years, in 1936 Eugene Ormandy joined the organization, and jointly held the post of principal conductor with Stokowski until 1938 when he became its sole music director. He remained as director until 1980, after which he became Conductor Laureate. The tour was successful and it has since returned for three additional successful tours. Riccardo Muti became principal guest conductor of the orchestra in the 1970s and his recordings with the orchestra included the symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, and Alexander Scriabin, for the EMI and Philips labels

Dmitri Shostakovich

Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich was a Russian pianist and composer of the Soviet period. He is regarded as one of the composers of the 20th century. Shostakovich achieved fame in the Soviet Union under the patronage of Soviet chief of staff Mikhail Tukhachevsky, nevertheless, he received accolades and state awards and served in the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR and the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union. A polystylist, Shostakovich developed a voice, combining a variety of different musical techniques into his works. Shostakovichs orchestral works include 15 symphonies and six concerti and his chamber output includes 15 string quartets, a piano quintet, two piano trios, and two pieces for string octet. His solo piano works include two sonatas, an set of preludes, and a later set of 24 preludes and fugues. Born at Podolskaya street in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Shostakovich was the second of three children of Dmitri Boleslavovich Shostakovich and Sofiya Vasilievna Kokoulina, Shostakovichs paternal grandfather, originally surnamed Szostakowicz, was of Polish Roman Catholic descent, but his immediate forebears came from Siberia. When his term of exile ended, Szostakowicz decided to remain in Siberia and he eventually became a successful banker in Irkutsk and raised a large family. His son, Dmitri Boleslavovich Shostakovich, the father, was born in exile in Narim in 1875 and studied physics and mathematics in Saint Petersburg University. He then went to work as an engineer under Dmitri Mendeleev at the Bureau of Weights, in 1903 he married another Siberian transplant to the capital, Sofiya Vasilievna Kokoulina, one of six children born to a Russian Siberian native. Their son, Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich, displayed significant musical talent after he began lessons with his mother at the age of nine. In 1918 he wrote a march in memory of two leaders of the Kadet party, murdered by Bolshevik sailors. In 1919, at the age of thirteen, he was allowed to enter the Petrograd Conservatory, then headed by Alexander Glazunov, Shostakovich also attended Alexander Ossovskys history of music classes. Steinberg tried to guide Shostakovich in the path of the great Russian composers and he also suffered for his perceived lack of political zeal, and initially failed his exam in Marxist methodology in 1926. His first major achievement was the First Symphony, written as his graduation piece at the age of nineteen. After graduation, Shostakovich initially embarked on a career as concert pianist and composer. He nevertheless won a mention at the First International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1927. He explained the disappointment at the competition to suffering from appendicitis and he later had his appendix removed in April 1927

Symphony No. 1 (Shostakovich)

The Symphony No.1 in F minor by Dmitri Shostakovich was written in 1924–1925, and first performed in Leningrad by the Leningrad Philharmonic under Nikolai Malko on 12 May 1926. Shostakovich wrote the work as his graduation piece at the Petrograd Conservatory, the work has four movements and is approximately half an hour in length. Allegretto - Allegro non troppo The work begins with an introductory Allegretto section and this leads into the first subject proper, a lively march-like Allegro reminiscent of the vaudeville and theatre music Shostakovich would have encountered during his time as a cinema pianist. The second subject is ostensibly a waltz, with the flute melody finding its way around several sections of the orchestra, the development section features a return to mock-comic grotesqueries, although the sonata-form structure of this movement is entirely conventional. Allegro - Meno mosso - Allegro - Meno mosso In the second movement we are presented with a start in the cellos. The piano features for the first time with rapid scalic runs before a more sombre mood develops in the Meno mosso section, the bassoon brings us back to the Allegro of the opening. The climax occurs with a combination of the two melodies presented earlier in the movement followed by a coda which is announced by widely spaced chords from the piano and violin harmonics. Lento - Largo - Lento The third movement begins with an oboe solo transferring to a cello solo. There is also a passage for the strings which anticipates the passacaglia from the Eighth Symphony. Allegro molto - Lento - Allegro molto - Meno mosso - Allegro molto - Molto meno mosso - Adagio There is a drum roll attacca from the movement into the fourth. After another sombre passage, the music suddenly enters the Allegro molto section with a very fast melody on the clarinet and this reaches a furious climax, after which calm descends and we hear another Wagner quotation. The following Allegro section culminates in a fortissimo timpani solo, a motif which featured in the third movement. Some of these fragments were associated with La Fontaines retelling of Aesops fable of the ant, the immediate parallel to the 19-year-old composer presenting his first symphony was Alexander Glazunov, himself a child prodigy who had his First Symphony performed at an even younger age. Glazunov may have recognised in Shostakovich an echo of his younger self, as director of the Petrograd Conservatory, Glazunov had followed Shostakovichs progress since his entrance at age 13. He also arranged for the premiere of Shostakovichs symphony, which took place 44 years after Glazunovs First Symphony had first been presented in the same hall. In another instance of déjà vu with Glazunovs early life, the symphony caused almost as much of a sensation as the appearance of the young Shostakovich on the stage awkwardly taking his bow. This symphony was a success from its premiere, and is still considered today as one of Shostakovichs finest works. It displays an interesting and characteristic combination of liveliness and wit on the one hand, in some ways it is reminiscent of the works of Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Prokofiev

Rutland Boughton

Rutland Boughton was an English composer who became well known in the early 20th century as a composer of opera and choral music. His oeuvre includes three symphonies, several concertos, part-songs, songs, chamber music and opera and his best known work was the opera The Immortal Hour. His Bethlehem, based on the Coventry Nativity Play and notable for its arrangements of traditional Christmas carols. Other operas by Boughton include The Moon Maiden, Alkestis, in addition to his compositions, Boughton is remembered for his attempt to create an English Bayreuth at Glastonbury, establishing the first series of Glastonbury Festivals. They ran with success from 1914 until 1926. Rutland Boughton was the son of grocer William Boughton whose shop occupied Buckingham Street in the town of Aylesbury, from an early age he showed signs of exceptional talent for music although formal training opportunities did not immediately become available to him. While at RCM, Boughton studied under Charles Villiers Stanford and Walford Davies from 1898 to 1901 and he later took up ad-hoc work first in the pit of the Haymarket Theatre then as official accompanist to the baritone David Ffrangcon-Davies. In 1903, he married former Aylesbury neighbours daughter, Florence Hobley and it was in 1905 that he was approached by Sir Granville Bantock to become a member of staff at the Birmingham and Midland Institute of Music. It was whilst at Birmingham Boughton was presented with new opportunities. He proved an excellent teacher and a choral conductor which won him much recognition. He was drawn into socialist ideas through the writings of John Ruskin, William Morris, Edward Carpenter and George Bernard Shaw, the last with whom he developed a lifelong relationship. It was also during those years that he attached to the young art student, Christina Walshe. His friendship with Shaw had begun when Boughton had been turned down from his invitation to collaborate on an opera, Shaw initially refused to be associated with any of Boughtons music but Boughton would not be dissuaded and eventually Shaw realised they had something in common that was to endure. Out of his process of self-discovery and self-education, came the artistic aims that were to occupy Boughton for all his life, at this point, the three collaborators - Boughton, Buckley and Walshe - sought to establish a national festival of drama. Sir Edward Elgar promised to lay the foundation stone and Beecham to lend his London orchestra, however, in August 1914, the month set for the opening of the first production, World War 1 had been declared and the full plans had to be postponed. In 1922, Boughtons Festival Players went on tour and became established at Bristol in the Folk Festival House, the most notable and most successful of Boughtons works is the opera The Immortal Hour, an adaptation of the play by Fiona Macleod based on Celtic mythology. On its arrival at the Regent Theatre in 1922, it secured an initial run of over 200 consecutive performances, people came to see the opera on more than one occasion and especially to see and hear the young Gwen Ffrangcon-Davies whose portrayal as Etain began her professional acting career. In addition to The Immortal Hour and Bethlehem, his other operas The Queen of Cornwall based on Thomas Hardys play, the event caused much embarrassment to the people of Glastonbury who withdrew their support from Boughton, causing the Festival Players to go into liquidation

The 1926 general strike in the United Kingdom was a general strike that lasted 10 days, from 3 May 1926 to 13 May 1926. Some 1.7 million workers went out, especially in transport, the government was prepared and enlisted middle class volunteers to maintain essential services. There was little violence and the TUC gave up in defeat, in the long run, there was little impact on trade union activity or industrial relations. The First World War, The heavy domestic use of coal in the war meant that rich seams were depleted, Britain exported less coal in the war than it would have done in peacetime, allowing other countries to fill the gap. The United States, Poland and Germany and their strong coal industries benefited, coal production was at its lowest ebb. Output per man had fallen to just 199 tonnes in 1920–1924, from 247 tonnes in the four years before the war, total coal output had been falling since 1914. The fall in prices resulting from the 1924 Dawes Plan. It allowed Germany to re-enter the international market by exporting free coal to France and Italy. Mine owners wanted to maintain even during times of economic instability. Coupled with the prospect of working hours, the industry was thrown into disarray. Miners pay had lowered from £6.00 to £3.90 over seven years, mine owners announced that their intention was to reduce miners wages. The Miners Federation of Great Britain rejected the terms, Not a penny off the pay, the Trades Union Congress responded to the news by promising to support the miners in their dispute. It also recommended a reduction by 13. 5% of miners wages, two weeks later, the prime minister announced that the government would accept the report if other parties also did. The Miners Federation of Great Britain refused the wage reduction and regional negotiation, during the next two days, frantic efforts were made to reach an agreement with the government and the mining industry representatives. However, they failed, mainly because of a decision by printers of the Daily Mail to refuse to print an editorial condemning the general strike. They objected to the passage, A general strike is not an industrial dispute. It is a move which can only succeed by destroying the government and subverting the rights. Baldwin was now concerned about the TUC and printers action interfering with the freedom of the press, King George V tried to stabilise the situation and create balance saying, Try living on their wages before you judge them

Prague is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. It is the 14th largest city in the European Union and it is also the historical capital of Bohemia. Situated in the north-west of the country on the Vltava river, the city has a temperate climate, with warm summers and chilly winters. Prague has been a political, cultural, and economic centre of central Europe with waxing and waning fortunes during its history and it was an important city to the Habsburg Monarchy and its Austro-Hungarian Empire. Prague is home to a number of cultural attractions, many of which survived the violence. Main attractions include the Prague Castle, the Charles Bridge, Old Town Square with the Prague astronomical clock, since 1992, the extensive historic centre of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. The city has more than ten major museums, along with theatres, galleries, cinemas. An extensive modern public transportation system connects the city, also, it is home to a wide range of public and private schools, including Charles University in Prague, the oldest university in Central Europe. Prague is classified as an Alpha- global city according to GaWC studies, Prague ranked sixth in the Tripadvisor world list of best destinations in 2016. Its rich history makes it a popular tourist destination, and the city more than 6.4 million international visitors annually. Prague is the fifth most visited European city after London, Paris, Istanbul, the region was settled as early as the Paleolithic age. In the last century BC, the Celts were slowly driven away by Germanic tribes, around the area where present-day Prague stands, the 2nd century map of Ptolemaios mentioned a Germanic city called Casurgis. In the following century, the Czech tribes built several fortified settlements in the area, most notably in Levý Hradec, Butovice and in the Šárka valley. The construction of what came to be known as the Prague Castle began near the end of the 9th century, the first masonry under Prague Castle dates from the year 885 at the latest. The other prominent Prague fort, the Přemyslid fort Vyšehrad, was founded in the 10th century, Prague Castle is dominated by the cathedral, which was founded in 1344, but completed in the 20th century. The legendary origins of Prague attribute its foundation to the 8th century Czech duchess and prophetess Libuše and her husband, Přemysl, legend says that Libuše came out on a rocky cliff high above the Vltava and prophesied, I see a great city whose glory will touch the stars. She ordered a castle and a town called Praha to be built on the site, a 17th century Jewish chronicler David Solomon Ganz, citing Cyriacus Spangenberg, claimed that the city was founded as Boihaem in c.1306 BC by an ancient king, Boyya. The region became the seat of the dukes, and later kings of Bohemia, under Roman Emperor Otto II the area became a bishopric in 973
