A bottom bracket in a bicycle. The crankarms and chainring are attached to the spindle of the bottom bracket, which is installed in the bottom bracket shell. The bottom bracket shell is an integral part of the bicycle frame. This is typical of modern frame designs, and different from the much older designs that gave the bottom bracket its name. In those designs - now obsolete - the bottom bracket was a separate piece bolted onto the frame.
