Hard rock

Hard rock is a loosely defined subgenre of rock music that began in the mid-1960s, with the garage, psychedelic and blues rock movements. It is typified by a use of aggressive vocals, distorted electric guitars, bass guitar, drums. Hard rock developed into a form of popular music in the 1970s, with bands such as The Who, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Aerosmith, AC/DC. During the 1980s, some rock bands moved away from their hard rock roots and more towards pop rock. Hard rock began losing popularity with the success of R&B, hip-hop, urban pop, grunge. Out of this movement came garage rock bands like The White Stripes, The Strokes, Interpol and, later on, in the 2000s, only a few hard rock bands from the 1970s and 1980s managed to sustain highly successful recording careers. Hard rock is a form of loud, aggressive rock music, the electric guitar is often emphasised, used with distortion and other effects, both as a rhythm instrument using repetitive riffs with a varying degree of complexity, and as a solo lead instrument. Drumming characteristically focuses on driving rhythms, strong drum and a backbeat on snare. The bass guitar works in conjunction with the drums, occasionally playing riffs, vocals are often growling, raspy, or involve screaming or wailing, sometimes in a high range, or even falsetto voice. In the late 1960s, the heavy metal was used interchangeably with hard rock. Heavy metal took on darker characteristics after Black Sabbaths breakthrough at the beginning of the 1970s, in the 1980s it developed a number of subgenres, often termed extreme metal, some of which were influenced by hardcore punk, and which further differentiated the two styles. Despite this differentiation, hard rock and heavy metal have existed side by side, with bands frequently standing on the boundary of, other antecedents include Link Wrays instrumental Rumble in 1958, and the surf rock instrumentals of Dick Dale, such as Lets Go Trippin and Misirlou. In the 1960s, American and British blues and rock bands began to rock and roll by adding harder sounds, heavier guitar riffs, bombastic drumming. From the late 1960s, it common to divide mainstream rock music that emerged from psychedelia into soft. Soft rock was often derived from rock, using acoustic instruments and putting more emphasis on melody. In contrast, hard rock was most often derived from rock and was played louder. Blues rock acts that pioneered the sound included Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, in songs like I Feel Free combined blues rock with pop and psychedelia, particularly in the riffs and guitar solos of Eric Clapton. Jimi Hendrix produced a form of blues-influenced psychedelic rock, which combined elements of jazz, blues and rock, from 1967 Jeff Beck brought lead guitar to new heights of technical virtuosity and moved blues rock in the direction of heavy rock with his band, The Jeff Beck Group

Alternative rock

Alternative rock is a genre of rock music that emerged from the independent music underground of the 1980s and became widely popular in the 1990s and 2000s. In this instance, the word refers to the genres distinction from mainstream rock music. The terms original meaning was broader, referring to a generation of musicians unified by their debt to either the musical style or simply the independent. Ethos of punk rock, which in the late 1970s laid the groundwork for alternative music, Alternative rock is a broad umbrella term consisting of music that differs greatly in terms of its sound, its social context, and its regional roots. Most of these subgenres had achieved minor mainstream notice and a few bands representing them, such as Hüsker Dü, with the breakthrough of Nirvana and the popularity of the grunge and Britpop movements in the 1990s, alternative rock entered the musical mainstream and many alternative bands became successful. By the end of the decade, alternative rocks mainstream prominence declined due to a number of events that caused grunge and Britpop to fade, emo attracted attention in the larger alternative rock world, and the term was applied to a variety of artists, including multi-platinum acts. Post-punk revival artists such as Modest Mouse and The Killers had commercial success in the early, before the term alternative rock came into common usage around 1990, the sort of music to which it refers was known by a variety of terms. In 1979, Terry Tolkin used the term Alternative Music to describe the groups he was writing about, in 1979 Dallas radio station KZEW had a late night new wave show entitled Rock and Roll Alternative. College rock was used in the United States to describe the music during the 1980s due to its links to the radio circuit. In the United Kingdom, dozens of small do it yourself record labels emerged as a result of the punk subculture, according to the founder of one of these labels, Cherry Red, NME and Sounds magazines published charts based on small record stores called Alternative Charts. The first national chart based on distribution called the Indie Chart was published in January 1980, at the time, the term indie was used literally to describe independently distributed records. By 1985, indie had come to mean a particular genre, or group of subgenres, at first the term referred to intentionally non–mainstream rock acts that were not influenced by heavy metal ballads, rarefied new wave and high-energy dance anthems. The use of alternative gained further exposure due to the success of Lollapalooza, for which festival founder, in the late 1990s, the definition again became more specific. Defining music as alternative is often difficult because of two conflicting applications of the word, the name alternative rock essentially serves as an umbrella term for underground music that has emerged in the wake of punk rock since the mid-1980s. Alternative bands during the 1980s generally played in clubs, recorded for indie labels. Sounds range from the gloomy soundscapes of gothic rock to the guitars of indie pop to the dirty guitars of grunge to the 1960s/1970s revivalism of Britpop. This approach to lyrics developed as a reflection of the social and economic strains in the United States and United Kingdom of the 1980s, by 1984, a majority of groups signed to independent record labels mined from a variety of rock and particularly 1960s rock influences. This represented a break from the futuristic, hyper-rational post-punk years

Heavy metal music

Heavy metal is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and the United States. Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are associated with aggression. The first heavy metal such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath. During the mid-1970s, Judas Priest helped spur the evolution by discarding much of its blues influence, Motörhead introduced a punk rock sensibility. Beginning in the late 1970s, bands in the new wave of British heavy metal such as Iron Maiden, before the end of the decade, heavy metal fans became known as metalheads or headbangers. During the 1980s, glam metal became popular with such as Mötley Crüe. Since the mid-1990s popular styles have further expanded the definition of the genre and these include groove metal and nu metal, the latter of which often incorporates elements of grunge and hip hop. Heavy metal is characterized by loud distorted guitars, emphatic rhythms, dense bass-and-drum sound. Metal subgenres variously emphasize, alter, or omit one or more of these attributes, the typical band lineup includes a drummer, a bassist, a rhythm guitarist, a lead guitarist, and a singer, who may or may not be an instrumentalist. Keyboard instruments are used to enhance the fullness of the sound. Deep Purples Jon Lord played an overdriven Hammond organ, in 1970, John Paul Jones used a Moog synthesizer on Led Zeppelin III, by the 1990s, in. almost every subgenre of heavy metal synthesizers were used. The electric guitar and the power that it projects through amplification has historically been the key element in heavy metal. The heavy metal guitar sound comes from a use of high volumes. Guitar solos are an element of the heavy metal code. That underscores the significance of the guitar to the genre, most heavy metal songs featur at least one guitar solo, which is a primary means through which the heavy metal performer expresses virtuosity. One exception is nu metal bands, which tend to omit guitar solos, with rhythm guitar parts, the heavy crunch sound in heavy metal. Palm muting the strings with the hand and using distortion. Pop punk

Pop punk is a punk rock music genre and a fusion genre that combines elements of punk rock with elements of pop music. Pop punk typically combines fast punk rock tempos, power chord changes and loud, distorted guitars with pop-influenced melodies. Pop-influenced punk rock emerged in the mid-1970s with a style that was stylistically similar to power pop. By the mid-1980s, several bands merged hardcore punk with pop music to create a new, faster pop punk sound such as Dag Nasty, Pop punk in the United States began to grow in popularity locally in California in the mid-to-late 1980s. Pop punk particularly thrived in California, where independent record labels adopted a do it approach to releasing music. By the mid-1990s, a few pop punk bands had started to sell millions of records and receive radio and television airplay. By 1994, pop punk was quickly growing in mainstream popularity, the late 1990s, exemplified by the 1999 release of Blink-182s Enema of the State, represented the genres mainstream peak, although some pop punk bands scored successful album chartings in the 2000s. In the mid-2000s, emo pop, a genre combining emo and pop punk. By the end of the 2000s, the pop sound of the 1990s had largely waned in mainstream popularity. Pop punk typically merges upbeat pop melodies with catchy hooks, catchy choruses, harmonies, speedy tempos, punk rock power chord changes and loud, distorted electric guitars. About. com has described second-wave pop punk bands as having a radio friendly sheen to their music, club, pop punk often pits sweet harmonies against bratty, rowdy riffs. Lyrical topics that are common in pop punk include love, lust, drunkenness, adolescence, cartoonish violence, some pop punk lyrics focus on jokes and humor. Some pop punk music features elements of rock, power pop. According to Ryan Cooper of About. com, pop punk is a style that more to the Beatles. It is not clear when the pop punk was first used. Protopunk and power pop bands of the late 1960s and early 1970s helped lay the groundwork for the pop punk sound, the Beatles, the Kinks and the Beach Boys all paved the way for pop punk. With their love of the Beach Boys and late 1960s bubblegum pop, the Ramones loud and fast melodic minimalism differentiated them from other bands in New York Citys budding art rock scene, but pop punk was not considered a separate subgenre until later. Wind-up Entertainment, Inc. is an American record label founded by Alan and Diana Meltzer in 1997. It is based in New York City and is distributed by Universal Music Group, Wind-ups best-selling artists worldwide were Creed and Evanescence. Wind-up Records was formed in 1997 by Alan Meltzer, former owner of CD One Stop, Wind-up at one point was the largest independently owned record label in the world. The parent company Wind-up Entertainment also runs numerous publishing companies as well as a retail, online. The companys slogan is Developing Career Artists, some of the successful acts on the label included Creed, Evanescence, Seether and Finger Eleven. The label has also re-released albums from bands previously associated with Grass Records, such as Toadies, The Wrens, in September 2009, the label reached an agreement with EMI Music Germany and in February 2011 with EMI Music Canada. The partnership has seen EMI Music take over the marketing and distribution of such as Creed, Evanescence. In Canada, distribution was initially with Sony Music Canada as was the distribution in the United States, however, in October 2004, distribution in Canada switched over to Warner Music Canada with the creation of Wind-up Entertainment Canada. Distribution in Canada moved again, for a time in February 2011. On October 31,2011, the founder, Alan Meltzer. In 2012, Universal Music Group acquired the EMI music operations, in October 2013, the Bicycle Music Company bought the rights to much of Wind-Ups back catalogue, including the contracts to acts such as Seether. Roadrunner Records

Roadrunner Records is a major record label that concentrates primarily on heavy metal and hard rock bands. It is a division of Warner Music Group and is based in New York City, the label was launched in 1980 in the Netherlands. Roadrunners initial business was importing North American metal-band recordings into Europe, in 1986, Roadrunner opened its US headquarters in New York City and later opened offices in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Japan, Australia, Denmark, Russia and the latest in Canada. Early successes included albums from King Diamond and Annihilator, the label also handled early Metallica releases in the Scandinavian region. The end of the 1980s saw the release of two albums that are now considered classics of their genres, Obituarys Slowly We Rot. The 1990s saw the arrival of such as Life of Agony, Machine Head, Suffocation, Type O Negative. As the 1990s wore on, several of Roadrunners bands managed to make an impact on the mainstream, most notably Sepultura, Sepulturas 1993 album, Chaos A. D. became the first Roadrunner band to crack the Top 40 on the Billboard album chart. Type O Negative became the first Roadrunner band to receive a certification from the RIAA, this was a Gold award for the 1993 album Bloody Kisses, the band also became the first Roadrunner band to receive radio play. In 2000, Slipknot became the first Roadrunner band to go Platinum, nickelback were also very successful on the label. Derek Shulman ran the label in the late 90s, beginning in 2001, Roadrunner was distributed by the Universal Music Group through a share of the label owned by The Island Def Jam Music Group. On December 18,2006, Warner Music Group signed an agreement to purchase a majority in shares of Roadrunner Records parent company and this deal became finalized on January 29,2007 after receiving regulatory approval in Germany. On June 11,2008, Roadrunner Records was voted as the Best Metal Label by Metal Hammer at their Golden Gods Awards, the award was accepted by Sharon Den Adel and Ruud Jolie of Within Temptation, one of Roadrunners biggest acts. However, Roadrunner has also accused of being a label only interested in current or trendy alternative music, reflected by their roster of mainly popular. One of the earliest names on the label, King Diamond, left the label due to alleged lack of support for the 1990 King Diamond release. In 2008, punk cabaret chanteuse Amanda Palmer was told by the label that wanted to re-edit her video for Leeds United to make her look slimmer. On April 6,2010, Palmer announced on her Twitter account that Roadrunner had dropped her, the most recent complaints about Roadrunner have come from one of the labels biggest bands Megadeth. Roadrunner Records was significantly affected by Warner Music Groups legal dispute against YouTube, most of the videos on their channel, however, are still viewable. There is even a disclaimer talking about Warners dispute right on the channel, on November 11,2010, Warner Music Group announced they had acquired the remaining of Roadrunners stock

Epic Records

Epic Records is an American record company owned by Sony Music Entertainment, a subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America, Inc. Epic was founded predominantly as a jazz and classical music label in 1953 and it later expanded its scope to include a more diverse range of musical genres, including pop, R&B, rock and hip hop. Historically, the label has housed popular acts such as Boston, ABBA, Michael Jackson, Celine Dion, Dave Clark Five, Gloria Estefan, Pearl Jam, Shakira, Anastacia, and Sly & the Family Stone. Along with Columbia and RCA Records, Epic is one of Sony Music Entertainments three main record labels, L. A. Reid has served as chairman and CEO of Epic since July 2011. Sylvia Rhone was appointed president in March 2014, Epic Records was launched in 1953 by Columbia Records for the purpose of marketing jazz, pop and classical music that did not fit the theme of its more mainstream Columbia Records label. Initial classical music releases were from Philips Records which distributed Columbia product in Europe, pop talent on co-owned Okeh Records were transferred to Epic which made Okeh a rhythm and blues label. Epics bright-yellow, black, and blue became a familiar trademark for many jazz. By 1960, the musical base had been expanded to include all genres. This was done in part to prevent the roster of Columbia Records from being overstuffed with newer artists, subsequently, Epic became better known for its signing of newer, fledgling acts. By the end of the 1960s, Epic earned its first gold records and had evolved into a formidable hit-making force in rock and roll, R&B and country music. Among its many acts, it included Roy Hamilton, Bobby Vinton, The Dave Clark Five, The Hollies, Tammy Wynette, Donovan, The Yardbirds, Lulu, July, Helen Shapiro and Jeff Beck. Also during the 1960s, Epic oversaw the smaller subsidiary CBS labels including Okeh Records, in 1968, Epic recordings began being distributed in the UK by CBS after the distribution deal with EMI expired that year, Epic itself launched in England around 1971. Epic was involved in a trade of artists. Graham Nash was signed to Epic because of his membership in The Hollies, when the newly formed Crosby, Stills & Nash wanted to sign with Atlantic Records, Ahmet Ertegün worked out a deal with Clive Davis whereby Richie Furays new band Poco would sign with Epic. Also contributing to the success was its distribution of Philadelphia International Records. Sony bought CBS Records in 1987, and the company was renamed Sony Music in 1991. In 2004, Sony merged with another powerhouse music distributor, BMG, bringing labels such as RCA, Arista, Columbia, Epic, Jive, in February 2009, singer and songwriter Amanda Ghost was appointed president of Epic Records. Later in the year, Sony BMG Music merged Epic and Columbias operations, Sony BMGs Legacy Recordings reissues the companys classic and catalog titles

Republic Records is an American record company that operates as a division of Universal Music Group. The label was endowed by Monte Lipman and Avery Lipman in 1995, the labels main offices are located in New York City, New York, United States, other offices of the record label are located at the Interscope Center in Santa Monica, California, U. S. According to Mediabase, Republic Records was 2012s top charting U. S. label, according to Avery Lipman, he and his brother Monte Lipman first conceived of Republic Records at the kitchen table of their apartment, My brother and I had been working at record companies. He was in between jobs and we started putting out as a hobby. We had an approach to the business. The first record we put out happened to work really well, frustrated by the limitations of being an independent with a very small staff, the Lipman brothers accepted an offer from Universal. One of several labels that comprise Universal Motown Republic Group, the newly named Republic Records was formed in 1995 as a sub-label of MCAs Geffen Records, Avery Lipman told HitQuarters that the pairing was a complete disaster, saying, Our ideas and vision didn’t fit with the label. We didn’t trust our own instincts and we let others decide what was right for the project. As of 2006, Universal Republic has adopted an A&R and partnership-based growth strategy, in an era of music industry transition they have proven effective, as Universal Republic has continued to grow in the industrys declining years. In mid-2012, Universal Republic Records changed its name to its former name Republic Records, all Universal Republic Records roster were moved to Republic Records. The label has released albums by Lil Wayne, Kid Cudi. The new Republic became the one label in soundtrack production. On March 31,2014, it was announced that Big Machine and Republic Records revived Dot Records, vH1 and Republic has both used Social media in this campaign. In 2015 Republic Records had songs in six of the spots in the top 10 of the Mediabase Top 40 Chart, in the earlier days, Republic Records released the Bloodhound Gangs EP, Dingleberry Haze, as well as their first LP, Use Your Fingers. Universal Republic has created strategic partnerships and co-ventures, singer Jay Sean and producer Kevin Rudolf of Cash Money Records. Rudolfs single, Let It Rock was certified 3x Platinum and licensed by multiple television networks for sports, Jay Seans debut single Down sold 3 million copies in the United States and 6 million worldwide. Seans follow-up single Do You Remember also sold over a million copies, American singer Taylor Swift with Nashville-based Big Machine Records. Swift today is a Diamond artist with 10 Grammys and 40 million records sold worldwide, jack Johnson on Brushfire Records who has achieved multi-Platinum certifications twice and is estimated to have sold about 8 million albums worldwide

Evanescence

Evanescence /ˌɛv. æn. ˈɛs. ɛns/ is an American rock band founded in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1995 by singer/pianist Amy Lee and guitarist Ben Moody. After recording independent albums, the released their first full-length album, Fallen. Fallen sold more than 17 million copies worldwide and helped the band win two Grammy Awards out of seven nominations, as well as scoring No.6 in CBSs Top Bestselling Albums of the Last 10 Years. A year later, Evanescence released their first live album, Anywhere but Home, in 2006, the band released their second studio album, The Open Door, which sold more than five million copies. As a result, none of the three studio albums feature the same lineup. The latter two led to a hiatus, with temporary band members contributing to tour performances. Billboard ranked Evanescence No.71 on the Best Artists of the Decade chart, announced in June 2009, the newest line-up of the band eventually returned with Evanescence, their self-titled third studio album, released on October 11,2011. It debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200 chart with 127,000 copies in sales, the album also debuted at No.1 on four other different Billboard charts, the Rock Albums, Digital Albums, Alternative Albums, and the Hard Rock Albums charts. The band spent 2012 on tour in promotion of their latest album with bands including The Pretty Reckless. Troy McLawhorn also became a band member during this time. Following the end of the tour cycle in 2012, the band entered another hiatus. In 2015, the band emerged from hiatus and announced they would resume touring, however, they denied that new Evanescence material was being produced, in addition, Balsamo left the band and was replaced by Jen Majura. Late 2016 saw additional touring from the band and a statement from Lee that Evanescence would continue, in March 2017, Lee stated Evanescence was working on a fourth album for release later in 2017. Evanescence was founded by singer, pianist and songwriter Amy Lee and former lead guitarist, the two met in 1994 at a youth camp in Little Rock, where Moody heard Lee playing a Meat Loaf song on the piano. The band became popular performing in coffee shops around the Little Rock area. After experimenting with band names, such as Childish Intentions and Stricken, they decided on Evanescence, the first is the self-titled Evanescence EP, of which about 100 copies were made and distributed at the bands early live performances. The second is the Sound Asleep EP, also known as the Whisper EP, there was also a third EP called Mystary EP. For their first full-length demo CD, Origin, about 2,500 copies were produced, Origin and the EPs contain demo versions of some songs on their debut album, Fallen

Slipknot (band)

Slipknot is an American heavy metal band from Des Moines, Iowa. The band was founded in September 1995 by percussionist Shawn Crahan, Gray died on May 24,2010, and was replaced from 2011–2014 by former guitarist Donnie Steele. Jordison left the band on December 12,2013, Steele left during the recording sessions for.5, The Gray Chapter. The band is now touring with replacement musicians Alessandro Venturella on bass, Slipknot is well known for its attention-grabbing image, aggressive style of music, and energetic and chaotic live shows. The band rapidly rose to success following the release of their eponymous album in 1999. The 2001 follow-up album, Iowa, although darker in tone, after another long hiatus, Slipknot released its fifth studio album.5, The Gray Chapter, in 2014. The band has released an album titled 9.0, Live, a compilation album titled Antennas to Hell. In 2015, Slipknot headlined the Download Festival in the UK for the third time, in the years before Slipknot formed, a state of shifting band membership existed throughout the metal scene in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1991, the biggest metal band in Des Moines was Atomic Opera, drummer Joey Jordison founded a thrash metal band called Modifidious, playing at a club called Runway. Modifidious opened for Atomic Opera on December 1,1991, at the Runway, Jordison replaced him with local guitarist Craig Jones. Drummer Shawn Crahan formed another Des Moines band called Heads on the Wall, playing funk metal cover songs at clubs, a fourth Des Moines band called Vexx played death metal with Anders Colsefni on drums, Paul Gray on bass, and Josh Brainard on guitar and vocals. Colsefni later took over vocal duties, but Vexx never recorded, during this time, Crahan often went to the Runway on Sundays when the club opened to all ages, where he met other young musicians with whom he could jam. One of the songs recorded was titled Slipknot, another was titled Painface. In 1993, a new band called Inveigh Catharsis formed in Des Moines, with Gray on bass, Brainard on guitar, Jordison jammed occasionally with this group. Brainard eventually left to join Jordison and Jones in Modifidious, participating in demo recordings at the end of 93, during 1994 Modifidious sometimes played the same shows as Crahans Heads on the Wall band. Gray formed a metal band called Body Pit, soon becoming popular in the local scene. Modifidious stopped playing in the wake of death metals increasing pull, Gray failed to get Jordison to join Body Pit, but soon after he recruited local guitar teacher Mick Thomson, the band broke up. In September 1995, Crahan and Gray started a band named the Pale Ones, the lineup was made up of friends who met through the local music scene, including vocalist Colsefni and guitarist Donnie Steele

Godsmack

Godsmack is an American rock band from Lawrence, Massachusetts, formed in 1995. The band is composed of founder, frontman and songwriter Sully Erna, guitarist Tony Rombola, bassist Robbie Merrill, since its formation, Godsmack which has resulted in six studio albums, one EP, four DVDs, one compilation album, and one live album. The band has had three consecutive albums on the Billboard 200. The band also has 20 top ten rock radio hits, including 15 songs in the top five, a record number of top ten singles by a rock artist. Since its inception, Godsmack has toured on Ozzfest on more than one occasion, Godsmack has sold over 20 million records in just over a decade. In honor of the success and the release of their sixth studio album, 1000hp. In February 1995, Sully Erna decided to start a new band as the singer after playing the drums for more than 23 years. His new band, The Scam, formed with Erna on vocals, Robbie Merrill on bass, local guitarist and friend Lee Richards on guitar, the Scam quickly changed its name to Godsmack, after recording one demo. The newly formed band started playing small bars in their hometown of Boston, locally popular songs such as Keep Away and Whatever soon brought them to the top of the hit charts in the Boston/New England area. The name stuck and they went by Godsmack from then on and we were aware of the Alice in Chains song but didnt really think much about it. In 1996, Tony Rombola and Joe DArco joined Godsmack as the guitarist and drummer, after Richards left upon learning he had a six-year-old child, in the same year, the band entered the studio for the first time, recording its first CD titled All Wound Up. The CD was recorded in just three days for $2,600, for the next two years, the band played throughout the Boston area. Eventually Godsmacks CD landed in the hands of Rocko, the night-time DJ for Boston radio station WAAF, the radio station put Keep Away into heavy rotation and the song rose to the number one spot at the station very quickly. Newbury Comics, a New England record store chain, agreed to sell the CD on consignment, shortly after the success of Keep Away, Godsmack went back into the studio and recorded a single titled Whatever, which became the new local favorite on WAAF. In an interview Sully Erna stated, We had been selling maybe 50 copies a month at the time WAAF picked up the album, All of a sudden we started moving over a thousand records a week. I was doing all this from my bedroom, after years of grinding away, things finally started taking off. In mid-1998, Universal/Republic Records signed the band to their label, Joe DArco was dismissed from the band. He was replaced by former drummer Tommy Stewart, who returned after expressing a desire to be in the band again, the bands first studio recording All Wound Up was re-mastered, and the finished self-titled debut CD album Godsmack was released to the public six weeks later

Ugly Kid Joe is an American rock band from Isla Vista, California, formed in 1987. The bands name spoofs that of band, Pretty Boy Floyd. Ugly Kid Joes sound includes a range of styles, including rock, hard rock, funk metal, to date, Ugly Kid Joe have released four full-length albums, two compilation albums and two EPs. Their best selling records are As Ugly as They Wanna Be and Americas Least Wanted, the band broke up in 1997, but announced a reunion in 2010. Childhood friends Whitfield Crane and Klaus Eichstadt took an interest in music growing up in Palo Alto. In 1990 Eichstadt joined Cranes band in Isla Vista, California, after the two recorded a demo with another Palo Alto native, record producer Eric Valentine. After several band changes, the band signed with Mercury Records in 1991. By this time the As Ugly as They Wanna Be line-up was formed, consisting of Crane, Eichstadt, Mark Davis, Roger Lahr, and Cordell Crockett. The band got its name Ugly Kid Joe as a parody of L. A. glam band Pretty Boy Floyd, Pretty Boy Floyd would pull out of the show and have the gig cancelled, but the band decided to keep the name. The band became popular in the early 1990s, mixing satirical humor and its logo was a cartoon embodiment of an ugly kid wearing a backwards baseball hat and giving the finger. Heavily influenced by Black Sabbath, Ugly Kid Joe covered several of the bands songs, including Sweet Leaf. The group toured the United States several times, making its second tour in support of Scatterbrain, and later opening for former Black Sabbath lead vocalist Ozzy Osbourne. As Ugly As They Wanna Be in October 1991, garnering success in 1992 with the single Everything About You, later in the year, the song would be used in the movie Waynes World. As Ugly As They Wanna Be went on to sell over 1,000,000 copies in the U. S. alone, the band spent 2 months in the studio to record Americas Least Wanted. During the process, Roger Lahr left the band due to differences and was eventually replaced by Sugartooth guitarist Dave Fortman in April 1992. Rob Halford of Judas Priest was a guest vocalist on the song Goddamn Devil, the band sped up the recording process for their album in order to get a spot as a supporting act for Ozzy Osbournes No More Tears tour. The band eventually landed a spot for the tour, only to have Crane to fly back to L. A. several times to finish edits on the album. The band decided to have a cover made with the bands mascot chained and gagged showing it is the cleaned version of the album

Superjoint, previously Superjoint Ritual, is an American metal band formed by Phil Anselmo, Joe Fazzio, and Jimmy Bower in the early 1990s, later to be joined by Hank Williams III, and Kevin Bond. Their style can be considered a mix of Panteras style of groove metal, a small trace of black metal can be heard, as well. Bands like Venom, Slayer, Celtic Frost, Voivod, the name Superjoint Ritual comes from a lyric in the Darkthrone song The Pagan Winter. According to Bower, Anselmo wrote 70-80% of the groups music, despite their early 1990s establishment, it wasnt until a decade later, after the folding of Pantera, that the group recorded any albums. It was then that Superjoint Ritual garnered significant TV exposure on programs such as MTV2s Headbangers Ball, however, the groups time in the spotlight would prove short lived. A dispute between Anselmo and Fazzio led to the eventual split in late 2004, which was confirmed by both Hank Williams III and Jimmy Bower. It was confirmed that they will have a reunion at the Housecore Horror Film Festival in Austin, for legal reasons, the band will perform under the name Superjoint. Hank Williams III was initially supposed to take part in this first reunion show, although their appearance at Housecore Horror was supposed to be the only reunion show, it is now confirmed that they will be performing as Superjoint Ritual at Hellfest Open Air 2015. The band is expected to release a new album, Superjoint released Caught Up in the Gears of Application on November 11,2016 through Housecore Records. In November of 2016 Superjoint announced a tour with Battlecross and Child Bite

Mudvayne was an American heavy metal band from Peoria, Illinois formed in 1996. Originally from Bloomington, Illinois, they are known for their experimentation, innovative album art, face and body paint, masks. The band has sold six million records worldwide, including nearly three million in the United States. The group consisted of Chad Gray, Greg Tribbett, Ryan Martinie, formed in 1996, Mudvayne became popular in the late-1990s Decatur, Illinois underground music scene. The band released an EP, Kill, I Oughtta, in 1997 and they had global success with The End of All Things to Come, Lost and Found and The New Game. Since 2010, the band has been inactive, with its members performing in other projects, Chad Gray is the vocalist for the heavy metal supergroup Hellyeah, to which Greg Tribbett was also a member until 2014. Gray founded an independent record label, Bullygoat Records, which produces heavy-metal albums, in early 2015, Chad Gray noted that the bands return seemed very unlikely, unless everybody licked their wounds and got over it. Mudvayne, formed in 1996 in Bloomington, Illinois, originally consisted of bassist Shawn Barclay, guitarist Greg Tribbett, the bands original lineup finalized when Chad Gray, who was earning $40,000 a year in a factory, quit his day job to become its singer. In 1997 Mudvayne financed its debut EP, Kill, I Oughtta, during the EPs recording Barclay was replaced by Ryan Martinie, former bassist for the progressive-rock band Broken Altar. After self-distributing Kill, I Oughtta, Mudvayne adopted stage names, in April 1998 local promoter Steve Soderstrom introduced Mudvayne to its original manager, Chuck Toler, who helped obtain a contract with Epic Records and record the 2000 debut studio album L. D. For the album, Mudvayne experimented with a ragged, dissonant sound, L. D.50 was produced by Garth Richardson, with executive production by Slipknot member Shawn Crahan. L. D.50 peaked at No.1 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart, the singles Dig and Death Blooms peaked at No.33 and No.32 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Although the album was praised, some found the band hard to take seriously. To promote L. D.50, Mudvayne played on the Tattoo the Earth tour with Nothingface, Slayer, Slipknot, Nothingface guitarist Tom Maxwell became friends with Mudvayne vocalist Chad Gray, and they explored the possibility of a supergroup. The following year, Nothingface again toured with Mudvayne, although plans for a supergroup continued, Gray and Maxwell had discussed five names for the group, and Mudvayne guitarist Greg Tribbett approached Maxwell out of the blue to join it. Although Nothingface drummer Tommy Sickles played on the demo, the search for another drummer began. In 2002 Mudvayne released The End of All Things to Come, during its mixing, Gray and McDonough stopped at Bobs Big Boy and Gray remembered overhearing someone say something like. And hes got to cut his own eye out, when he asked McDonough if he heard the conversation McDonough said he hadnt, and Gray thought it was someone discussing a scene from a screenplay

Otep is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California formed in 2000. They have released two EPs, six albums, and one live album. As of December 2013, they are no longer under their previous label Victory Records, Otep began as a band in Los Angeles, California, in late 2000. The name Otep is from Otep Shamayas stage name and is an anagram for Poet and they were invited to play Ozzfest before they had signed to a label after Sharon Osbourne witnessed their live performance. They have since played Ozzfest several times, Otep signed with Capitol Records after a few shows and without a demo, purely on the power of their live performance. They started gigging around Los Angeles a lot and released the Jihad EP in 2001, the band released their album Sevas Tra with Terry Date on June 18,2002, and then played several gigs at the Ozzfest and was considered one of the prime bands there in 2002. Their first time at Ozzfest was in 2001 with their eighth gig, the first album peaked at 145 on the Billboard 200 and 86 on the UK Albums Chart. On July 27,2004, Otep released their 2nd album House of Secrets, the album peaked at 93 on the Billboard 200 and 102 on the French Chart. Despite the original date, the album was delayed indefinitely due to the recent Capitol/Virgin Records merger. It peaked at 81 on the Billboard 200 and 6 on the US Independent Charts, the album also had about 10,200 album copies sold in its first week of release. In 2009, Otep signed with Victory Records and their 2009 album, Smash the Control Machine released August 18 during 2009, included a reunion with former members Mark Moke Bistany on drums and Rob Patterson on guitar. The album also featured Koichi Fukuda on piano, and Emilie Autumn on violin, and a cowrite with songwriter Holly Knight, Holly Knight previously cowrote Perfectly Flawed with Otep on The Ascension. It peaked at 47 on the Billboard 200 and 6 on the US Independent Charts, the band appeared with 2Cents, Five Finger Death Punch & Shadows Fall on the Shock & Raw Tour of North America in the fall of 2009. On September 30,2010, bassist Jay McGuire left the band, during April 26,2011, Otep released their 5th studio album, Atavist. The album peaked at 61 on the Billboard 200,10 on the Independent Charts and 19 on the US Rock Charts, on November 6,2012, Otep released their first live album, Sounds Like Armageddon. In an interview, Otep Shamaya has stated that Hydra will be her bands final album, the album was released on January 22,2013 and peaked at 133 on Billboard 200. However, the band is touring and have tours in places such as the USAs east coast. In early 2014, Otep confirmed on her personal Facebook account, in April 2014, Otep have signed a new management deal with Kam 9.8 Machlation Group—a company founded by Slipknot‘s DJ Sid Wilson and his business partner Synonym Mead

Eyehategod

Eyehategod is an American sludge metal band from New Orleans who formed in 1988. They have become one of the most well known bands to emerge from the NOLA metal scene. Throughout the years, their core line-up has remained, with the exceptions of the bass guitarist, a slot in which several musicians have played, and the death of drummer Joey LaCaze in 2013. Eyehategod have noted Melvins, Carnivore, The Obsessed, Discharge, Black Flag, Corrosion of Conformity, Black Sabbath, Celtic Frost, Confessor, heavy, detuned, and bluesy guitar riffs dominate the bands discography. They are combined with walls of feedback and tortured vocals to create a harsh misanthropic vibe, the band was friends with Anal Cunt and performed with them for the first show after their frontman Seth Putnam came out of his coma. Very little is known about early Eyehategod, Jimmy Bower and Joey LaCaze founded the band on April 20,1988, and they recruited Brian Patton, Steve Dale and vocalist Chris Hilliard. Hilliard would later leave the group early on, and would be replaced by Mike Williams, the band then recorded two demos Garden Dwarf Woman Driver and Lack of Almost Everything, the latter was sent out to various labels. They eventually got signed to the small French label Intellectual Convulsion, the album had a far more primitive and raw sound than later releases, and had a more hardcore feel to it. The label dissolved with only a couple of copies having been printed. They soon signed with Century Media however, who re-released In the Name of Suffering on December 1,1992, also in 2006, In the Name of Suffering was re-issued with four bonus tracks. These four tracks were the same as those on the original demo Lack Of Almost Everything, Eyehategod then went on to record Take as Needed for Pain in 1993 with new bassist Mark Schultz who had also contributed on In The Name Of Suffering. The album was recorded at Studio 13, a small label working from the 13th floor of a department store on Canal Street in New Orleans. The band played daily during this period to put down tracks for the album, at the time, Mike Williams was homeless and living in an abandoned, flea-infested room above a strip club just a few minutes away from the studio. The southern rock, blues and doom influences are also more distinctly felt on this album, after the release of the album, the band toured extensively with acts such as Chaos UK, Buzzov*en, White Zombie and Corrosion of Conformity. After touring, the band members spread out in different directions. Mike Williams busied himself contributing to Metal Maniacs magazine, Jimmy Bower played drums on Crowbars Broken Glass as well as Downs debut album, NOLA. Brian Patton recorded Soilent Greens debut album, Pussysoul, at the time, Mike Williams was living in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn in New York City, and so had to travel between there and New Orleans frequently for the recording sessions. The recording sessions were chaotic, and involved the studio owner reportedly calling Century to ask if the band were insane

A record producer or music producer oversees and manages the sound recording and production of a band or performers music, which may range from recording one song to recording a lengthy concept album. A producer has many roles during the recording process, the roles of a producer vary. The producer may perform these roles himself, or help select the engineer, the producer may also pay session musicians and engineers and ensure that the entire project is completed within the record companies budget. A record producer or music producer has a broad role in overseeing and managing the recording. Producers also often take on an entrepreneurial role, with responsibility for the budget, schedules, contracts. In the 2010s, the industry has two kinds of producers with different roles, executive producer and music producer. Executive producers oversee project finances while music producers oversee the process of recording songs or albums. In most cases the producer is also a competent arranger, composer. The producer will also liaise with the engineer who concentrates on the technical aspects of recording. Noted producer Phil Ek described his role as the person who creatively guides or directs the process of making a record, indeed, in Bollywood music, the designation actually is music director. The music producers job is to create, shape, and mold a piece of music, at the beginning of record industry, producer role was technically limited to record, in one shot, artists performing live. The role of producers changed progressively over the 1950s and 1960s due to technological developments, the development of multitrack recording caused a major change in the recording process. Before multitracking, all the elements of a song had to be performed simultaneously, all of these singers and musicians had to be assembled in a large studio and the performance had to be recorded. As well, for a song that used 20 instruments, it was no longer necessary to get all the players in the studio at the same time. Examples include the rock sound effects of the 1960s, e. g. playing back the sound of recorded instruments backwards or clanging the tape to produce unique sound effects. These new instruments were electric or electronic, and thus they used instrument amplifiers, new technologies like multitracking changed the goal of recording, A producer could blend together multiple takes and edit together different sections to create the desired sound. The Open Door is the second studio album by American rock band Evanescence. It was released on September 25,2006, through Wind-up Records, the writing process for the album took over 18 months to complete, most of the songs were written by Amy Lee and Terry Balsamo, while production was handled by Dave Fortman. The Open Door received mixed to positive reviews music critics, who generally praised its lyrical content. Some critics gave negative reviews regarding the sound, which differs from that of the bands last album. The record was nominated at the 50th Grammy Awards for Best Hard Rock Performance for Sweet Sacrifice, the band also won in the category of Album of the Year at the 2007 MTV Australia Video Music Awards. The Open Door debuted at one on the Billboard 200. It topped the charts in Australia, Europe, Germany, Greece and Switzerland, the album was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America just over a month after its release, and has since been certified double Platinum. The record has more than five million copies worldwide. Call Me When Youre Sober was digitally made available for purchase as the first single from the album on September 14,2006 and it peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and charted in the top 20 of several charts internationally. Lithium was released as the single on January 1,2007. Good Enough was released as the single from the album. The Open Door was supported by two tours, The Open Door Tour and Evanescence Tour. During an interview with MTV News, Lee revealed that Evanescence would being writing material for their record in March 2004 after finishing their tour in support of Fallen. She further explained it was impossible to write on tour and that going to go to their house. While saying the group would assemble to record new material, Lee announced the release of The Open Door to her fans during a post on an unofficial Evanescence website, EvBoard. com. Lee said on an internet forum the new recording would be completed in March 2006. Wanted to make a few changes to the upcoming single Call Me When Youre Sober, talking about the development and inspiration of the album, the singer stated, All the things that happened were really inspiring, because it was frustrating. But for me at least, every time we get really frustrated and youre hitting a wall and everything is chaos, it just makes the music that much better, rather than wallowing in the hard stuff, the records theme reflects on looking for solutions and happiness

Fallen is the debut studio album by American rock band Evanescence. After releasing several EPs and a demo CD, the group signed to Wind-up in January 2001, writing songs for Fallen started near the time of the bands formation, several of the songs that would feature on the album appeared on the bands earlier releases. Fallen was recorded between August and December 2002 in several locations, including Conway Recording Studios in Hollywood, California and this was followed by a two-week period of mixing at Conway Recording Studios in North Hollywood. Fallen was released on March 4,2003, on Wind-up, Fallen is Evanescences most commercially successful album to date, selling more than seven million copies in the United States and over 17 million copies worldwide. It debuted at seven on the Billboard 200 after selling more than 141,000 copies during its first week. Fallen topped the charts in more than ten countries, the album was certified seven times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America and was certified abroad. Fallen received mixed to positive reviews music critics. Fallen yielded four singles, Bring Me to Life, My Immortal, Going Under, Bring Me to Life and My Immortal charted in over ten countries, including Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The album earned Evanescence five nominations at the 46th Grammy Awards, Album of the Year, Best Rock Album, Best Rock Song, Best Hard Rock Performance, the band won in the latter two categories. After Evanescence was formed by Amy Lee and Ben Moody in 1995, in January 2001 they signed with Wind-up Records, their first major label. Composing Fallen took eight years, in an MTV interview, Ben Moody said that he wrote with Lee maybe two or three times in eight years, the album was recorded in California at Track Record Studios, NRG Recording Studios, Ocean Studios, and Conway Recording Studios. Songs were recorded as demos before the sessions, and My Immortal, Imaginary. The album was recorded and mixed from late August to early December 2002, Recording began at Ocean Studios in Burbank, where Bring Me to Life was recorded. This recording was used for the Daredevil soundtrack. Dave Fortman said that for the rest of the drums, he used a D112 on the inside of the drum, a U47 on the outside. The producer used 414 microphones on the ride and hi-hat cymbals, recording the drums on two-inch tape on a Studer recorder, the guitars for the album were cut at Mad Dog Studios in Burbank with an old Mesa Boogie guitar cabinet. Lees vocals, pianos and the vocal by the Millennium Choir were recorded at NRG Recording Studios. The orchestral parts were arranged by David Hodges and David Campbell except for My Immortal, Fallen was mixed over a two-week period at Conway Recording Studios in North Hollywood and mastered by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound in New York City

All Hope Is Gone is the fourth studio album by American metal band Slipknot. Preparation for the album began in 2007, while recording started in February 2008 in the home state of Iowa. Before the albums launch, Slipknot released a series of promotional images, All Hope Is Gone is considered the bands most eclectic-sounding album, incorporating elements from their previous three. Lyrically, All Hope Is Gone centers on themes such as anger, disaffection, obsession, the album name also features a more prominent focus on politics than their previous albums. Slipknot promoted All Hope Is Gone on a tour and at the Mayhem Festival. Generally well received by critics, the reached the top position on nine record charts worldwide. It was certified platinum by the RIAA on August 10,2010 for shipments in excess of 1,000,000 albums in the United States, preparation for All Hope Is Gone began in 2007. Drummer Joey Jordison explained, Ive told them to whatever they can so weve got as much material to choose from as possible. In February 2008, Slipknot entered the Sound Farm Studio in Jamaica, All Hope Is Gone is the bands first album written and recorded in their home state of Iowa. Bassist Paul Gray explained that the band decided to record in Iowa because there were too many distractions in Los Angeles, the band also stated that being close to home was good for their mindset, vocalist Corey Taylor drove home every night to see his son. Unlike Slipknots previous releases, the writing process involved all nine band members. Jordison commented, I have to say that the band is at its peak, everyone—I mean everyone—is now completely involved in the writing process, and its a beautiful thing. Taylor and guitarist Jim Root paired up with Sid Wilson, performing on keyboards, Taylor also experimented with tracking in an old well, stating, There was this natural reverb to it that was just intense. According to Crahan none of the tracks made it onto the album. However, one of them, Til We Die, appears as a track on the albums special edition along with Child Of Burning Time. William Whitfield Whit Crane IV is a founding member and lead singer of the rock band Ugly Kid Joe, which formed in 1989 and disbanded in 1997, reforming in 2010. During Ugly Kid Joes inactivity, Crane went on a tour with New York hard rock band Life of Agony before forming Medication with ex-Machine Head guitarist. Due to a series of issues, Medication disbanded in February 2003. Cranes filmography includes Ellie Parker, in which he has an appearance as an acting student, and Motörheads 25 & Alive Boneshaker. In 2006, former Ugly Kid Joe bandmate Shannon Larkin asked Crane to join a project he formed with members of Godsmack called Another Animal. Crane accepted, and the band released its debut album in 2007. In support of their debut, the band went out on tour, however, they have suffered poor record sales, and the future of the band is currently unknown. Americas Least Wanted is the full-length debut album by rock band Ugly Kid Joe, released in September 1992. The title is a parody of the famous phrase Americas Most Wanted, the album was a commercial success, charting three singles on the Mainstream Rock Tracks. Everything About You peaked at No.3 in the UK Singles Chart, Cats in the Cradle, also reached made the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number six, earning the album two top 10 Billboard hit singles. The latter song also made it to No.11 on the Top 40 Mainstream, as of 1995, the album has been certified double platinum. It had previously included in the SNL-based movie Waynes World. The difference between CD and LP versions of album is that the song Goddamn Devil appears as its first track on the B-side. The albums original artwork depicts Ugly Kid Joes mascot as the Statue of Liberty gesturing an upraised middle finger, several national chains refused to sell the album in their stores due to the offensive picture, and a censored version was manufactured for some retailers. The censored version depicts the Ugly Kid Joe mascot handcuffed in one hand and tied in rope, despite being Ugly Kid Joes most successful album, Americas Least Wanted received mostly mixed reviews. Recordman, the most pathetic love song to a record ever written. These kids should have quit while they were ahead, the would-be centerpiece, Goddamn Devil, has neither the irony nor the evil needed to revive that tired topic, despite a guest appearance by Judas Priests knowing Rob Halford. Turning Harry Chapins Cats in the Cradle into a ballad was a bad idea to begin with. } Graspop Metal Meeting is an annual metal festival in Dessel, Belgium that has taken place each year since 1996. Despite the small size of the grounds the festival draws a large number of international spectators. Graspop was not originally a metal festival, rather, it was conceived as a local family Rock festival. In 1995, the headliners billed were Joe Cocker and Simple Minds, however, due to the public being oversaturated with family festivals, the number of visitors had dropped to an all-time low. Founder Peter Van Geel realized that mainstream rock music held insufficient appeal to festival visitors, reflecting on the most memorable acts of the preceding years and on his own musical preferences, he decided in favour of a drastic reorientation. After discussions with Werchter festival promoter Herman Schueremans, Van Geel contacted Bob Schoenmaekers, a couple of years earlier, Schoenmaekers had set up his Midsummer Metal Meeting in Vosselaar and because of space limits, he was considering an open-air festival. The initial contact soon led to close collaboration, the duo decided to launch a brand-new metal festival under the name of Graspop Metal Meeting. The date of choice was to be the last weekend of June, the new direction proved to be a successful one. The festival has seen a rising number of visitors over the years. Since the festivals inception in 1996, Iron Maiden has been the most frequent headliner with 8 appearances. Other bands which have prominently been featured are My Dying Bride, Saxon, Slayer, Moonspell, Motörhead, Cradle Of Filth, Within Temptation, Slipknot, Arch Enemy and Behemoth. The current stages are, Main Stage 1 &2, The two main stages, host important bands and headlining acts, before 2014, there was only one main stage. Marquee, A tent stage, which hosts mostly thrash metal, death metal, Metal Dome, Host more intimist bands and local acts. Jupiler Stage, First held in 2014, it is a open air stage. Cats in the Cradle is a 1974 folk rock song by Harry Chapin from the album Verities & Balderdash. The single topped the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1974, as Chapins only No.1 hit song, it became the best known of his work and a staple for folk rock music. Chapins recording of the song was nominated for the 1975 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2011 and she was also inspired by a country music song she had heard on the radio. Harry also said the song was about his own relationship with his son, Josh, admitting, Frankly, to this day Dr. James Dobson refers to Cats in the Cradle as one of the most poignant songs ever written about parenting. In 1992, the rock band Ugly Kid Joe included a cover of Cats in the Cradle on their debut album Americas Least Wanted. The cover was issued as a single in 1993 and peaked at six on the Billboard Hot 100. The song also peaked at three on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The single sold 500,000 copies domestically, earning a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America, in Chapins version, the chorus changes subtly from when you coming home, dad. to when you coming home, son. As the child grows up, and the changes from a busy dad neglecting his son to a busy son neglecting his father. In Ugly Kid Joes version all the use the when you coming home. Version, this likely to be an oversight. Johnny Cash made his own version in his album Boom Chika Boom, in 1993 a version of the song was used in an anti-paramilitary advert commissioned by the Northern Ireland Office titled “I Wanna Be Like You”. A version of song was recorded as Just Like Me by DMC featuring Sarah McLachlan. This version used the melody and almost the same chorus lyrics. The recording appeared on DMCs 2006 album Checks Thugs and Rock n Roll as well as McLachlans 2008 compilation Rarities, B-Sides and Other Stuff Volume 2. Covington is a city in and the parish seat of St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 8,765 at the 2010 census and it is located at a fork of the Bogue Falaya and the Tchefuncte River. Covington is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area, the earliest known settlement by Europeans in the area was in 1800 by Jacques Drieux. In 1813, John Wharton Collins established a town there with the name of Wharton and he is buried on the corner of the city cemetery directly across from the Covington Police Department. There are conflicting stories about how the city came to be named Covington, many historians believe the city was renamed after General Leonard Covington, a hero of the War of 1812. In any case, Leonard Covington is the namesake of both towns, initially, commerce was brought to Covington via boat up the Bogue Falaya River, which used the Tchefuncte River as a means of passage to and from Lake Pontchartrain. Then in 1888, the railroad came to town, much of those rails are now occupied by the Tammany Trace, a thirty-one mile bike trail running through multiple cities north of Lake Pontchartrain. In the late 20th century, with the expansion of Louisianas road system, many people who worked in New Orleans started living in Covington, commuting to work via the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. This is considered to be associated with white out of New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina made landfall near Slidell, but Covington was sufficiently elevated to escape the storm surge, however. The towns population continues to grow, Covington is located at 30°28′44″N 90°6′15″W and has an elevation of 26 feet. Philip Hansen Phil Anselmo is an American heavy metal musician who is best known as the lead vocalist for Pantera. He is also the owner of Housecore Records and has been involved several other bands. Anselmo was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and is of Danish, Italian and he attended many schools, the last of which was Grace King High School located in the suburb of Metairie. Anselmos father, Phil, owned and operated a restaurant in Metairie called Anselmos, Anselmo has said in various interviews that he was very quiet and secluded as a child. He spent some time working on fishing boats as a young man, as a teen, Anselmo accidentally started a fire in his parents house while pulling a prank on his sister. The incident resulted in damage to most of the furniture. While a teenager, Anselmo joined the band Samhain, from the early to mid-1980s, Anselmo was a member of the band Razor White. While they did have some material, they played mainly Judas Priest covers. Pantera was a metal band, with three self-released albums to their name. In 1986, the decided to replace singer Terrence Lee. Seeking a new frontman to continue on this path, the band was led to 19-year-old Anselmo. In 1987, after meetings, Anselmo was added to the Pantera lineup. The band was so impressed with Anselmo that they re-recorded some of Terrence Lees vocals for their latest release, Anselmo relocated to Texas to record Power Metal, which was released in 1988 on the bands own record label, Metal Magic Records. Following the release of Power Metal, the band dropped its glam image, Pantera recorded the album Cowboys from Hell in 1990, and a long tour began. The band documented portions of tour on their first home video, Cowboys from Hell, The Videos. In 1992, Pantera released Vulgar Display of Power and that same year, the band released a promo titled Hostile Mixes that contained four songs, three of which were remixes. The first two remixes were done by Justin K. Broadrick of Godflesh and the last by J. G. Thirlwell of Foetus, in 1994, Pantera released Far Beyond Driven, which debuted at No.1 in the U. S. Crowbar is an American sludge metal band from New Orleans, Louisiana, characterized by their extremely slow, low-keyed, heavy and brooding songs that also contain fast hardcore punk passages. Crowbar is considered to be one of the most influential bands to come out of the New Orleans metal scene. Their slow, heavy, and brooding style of metal is known to be influential in the metal, doom metal. The band dates back to 1988, when Kirk Windstein joined the hardcore punk band Shell Shock in New Orleans. He met Jimmy Bower, who was their drummer, and both became friends. The band collapsed when Mike Hatch, their guitarist, committed suicide in late 1988, the band, replacing Hatch with Kevin Noonan, carried on as Aftershock, where Windstein and Bower began to play low-tuned hardcore punk mixed with doom metal. Under that name they released a demo in mid-1989, and then renamed themselves WREQIUEM, with Mike Savoie, their bassist, leaving the band, then in 1990 they renamed themselves The Slugs, and released a demo in mid-1990, but the band collapsed. Kirk considered becoming the guitarist for Exhorder, but Kirk and Todd reformed the band, with Craig Nunenmacher as the drummer, who was later replaced by Tommy Buckley, and Kevin Noonan again on guitar. The band renamed themselves Crowbar in mid-1991, Crowbars debut studio album, Obedience Thru Suffering, was released in 1991, but failed to achieve notoriety. By 1993s self-titled album, personal friend Phil Anselmo produced the record, in addition, the videos for All I Had and Existence is Punishment were played on Beavis and Butt-head. Following this success the band went on to music videos, embark on major tours with Pantera. Their stage antics, immortalized in the Pantera Home Video 3 and Crowbars Like Broken Glass home video, the band continued recording and touring. In 1994, the Pantera video for the song Im Broken showed Philip Anselmo wearing a Crowbar / Eyehategod t-shirt. Original drummer Craig Nunenmacher left the band in 1996 and was replaced by Jimmy Bower from Down and Eyehategod, half way through the tour, Nunenmacher replaced BLSs drummer Phil Ondich and pulled double duty for the rest of the tour, eventually joining BLS permanently. The band continues to perform, borrowing members from New Orleans metal bands like Goatwhore, in their recent 2005 release, Lifesblood for the Downtrodden, Pantera bassist Rex Brown lent his bass skills and keyboard playing. Downs producer, Warren Riker, assisted in production, also in 2005, Existence appeared on the Beavis and Butt-Head, The Mike Judge Collection No.3 DVD. On April 21,2008, the albums Crowbar, Time Heals Nothing, the band is also known for covering other bands material and putting a heavy spin on it. Little Rock is the capital and the most populous city of the U. S. state of Arkansas. Lost and Found is the third full-length album by the American band Mudvayne. The album was released on April 12,2005, the album had major success in the U. S. debuting at number 2 and being certified Gold by the RIAA shortly afterward. It has sold about 1,000,000 copies as of August 2014 and is the bands most successful album to date, after opening for Metallica on the bands Summer Sanitarium tour in 2003, Mudvayne spent the holidays recuperating before starting work on the album. The album was produced by Dave Fortman, the band chose Fortman because they felt he could combine the bands extreme elements. Before heading to The Plant Studios in Sausalito, California to record the album, the band rented a ranch in Northern California where they wrote and rehearsed songs for the album. They converted its multi-stall garage into a makeshift studio, as with the bands previous album, Mudvayne chose to isolate themselves to provide inspiration for their songwriting. Matt McDonough stated Establishing clear goals for each song has been the key to Mudvaynes quick results and its a strange contradiction, but it can be very liberating to set limitations on creativity as long as you dont let those limitations define you. It frees up a lot of energy when you stop pulling an idea in fifty different directions. By May 27,2004 the band had finished writing 12 songs for the album, Chad, Ryan, Greg and Matt left the ranch in Santa Cruz and went back to their respective homes in California, Illinois and Wisconsin. On Saturday, June 12,2004 the band reconvened to commence recording the album, the song Small Silhouette was recorded during the Lost and Found sessions, with it later appearing on the soundtrack album to the VH1 series Masters of Horror. Lost and Found was described as a rock album by Consequence of Sound. It includes elements of thrash metal, the song Determined utilizes elements of modern thrash and hardcore punk, while the song IMNs lyrics revolve around suicide, a recurring theme in Mudvaynes songs. The track Choices was described by Gray as the eight-minute opus and it is to date the longest Mudvayne song. The band sees the album as a return to the raw sound heard on L. D,50, with guitarist Greg Tribbett saying in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine Instead of being all slick, were definitely going for a raw sound on this record. The last one was pretty smooth and the first record, L. D,50, was raw, so were kind of mixing it up a little bit. Matt McDonough said he believed the music on the album would reflect a refinement of Mudvaynes complexly structured hard rock balanced against more melody than any previous album. She has a brother named Robby and two sisters, Carrie and Lori, Lee had a younger sister who died in 1987 at the age of three from an unidentified illness. The song Hello from Fallen has been reported to have written for her late sister. Lee took classical piano lessons for nine years and her family moved to many places, including West Palm Beach, Florida, and Rockford, Illinois, and eventually settled in Little Rock, Arkansas, where Evanescence was formed. Lee graduated from Pulaski Academy, a school in Little Rock. She briefly attended Middle Tennessee State University in 2000 to study theory and composition. In an interview on AOL Music, Lee said that the first songs she remembered writing were called Eternity of the Remorse and A Single Tear. McDowell has had recurring roles on television series such as Entourage, Heroes. He narrated the documentary The Compleat Beatles, and in recent years, has become a voice actor in films, television series and video games such as Call of Duty. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012, McDowell was born Malcolm John Taylor in Horsforth in the West Riding of Yorkshire. He is the son of Edna, a hotelier, and Charles Taylor, a publican and his family later moved to Bridlington, since his father was stationed at the nearby RAF Carnaby with the Royal Air Force. James Shannon Larkin, is a musician best known for being the drummer of the rock band Godsmack. He replaced the previous drummer Tommy Stewart in June 2002, prior to Godsmack, his previous bands were Amen, Candlebox, Ugly Kid Joe, and Souls at Zero. Shannon played drums for Godsmack for their albums Faceless, IV their EP The Other Side, The Oracle, Shannon Larkin started playing drums at the age of 10. However, it was his sister who unknowingly ignited Shannons passion to play by forcing him to repeatedly listen to her favorite album. Then he turned on to Led Zeppelin, and then decided to ask his parents for a drum kit, Shannon Larkins first major label band was Wrathchild America. Founded In Martinsburg West Virginia, the band was named simply Wrathchild. To avoid further legal troubles, they added America to the name, kiddie Porn released two albums, A Gift of Hate and Conflict of Mind. After recording 2 albums for Atlantic Records, Wrathchild America was dropped by the label, Shannon, along with his bandmates disbanded Wrathchild America only to resurface as Souls at Zero. Souls at Zero was signed to the now defunct label Energy Records and their self-titled debut album was well received by critics and fans alike. Unfortunately, it didnt translate into CD sales, in the meantime, Shannon formed a side project band called MF Pitbulls in which the other members later formed the band Snot. MF Pitbulls member Jamie Miller later became Souls at Zeros drummer right after Shannon was tapped by Ugly Kid Joe, according to Wrathchild America/Souls at Zeros former manager Chip Seligman, Shannon was the one who recommended Jamie Miller as his replacement. He later replaced Jamie Miller on the Snot album Strait Up, Shannon recorded 2 albums with Ugly Kid Joe, and the band was no more. Still a struggling musician, Shannon found himself without a band, as luck would have it, Shannon once again was tapped into another band. This time it was Casey Chaoss Amen, Shannon was referred to Amen by producer Ross Robinson of Slipknot fame. Shannon recorded two albums for Amen, before he left the band as a musician, but still performs on the albums. Shannon also recorded the album Hard to Swallow by Vanilla Ice, shortly after, Shannon got a call from his old friend Sully Erna who wanted him to play drums for his band, Godsmack. Shannon replaced Tommy Stewart and subsequently recorded his first album with Godsmack, on July 1,1997, Shannon played drums for one live show with Black Sabbath, the final one on the Ozzfest 97 tour. The Oracle, formerly known as Saints & Sinners, is the fifth studio album by American alternative metal band Godsmack, released in the U. S. on May 4,2010. The Oracle is the first Godsmack album to be produced by Dave Fortman, the Oracle also marks the first Godsmack studio album to be released since 2006s IV. The span of four years between the fourth album and The Oracle marks the longest gap between studio albums in Godsmacks career. In 2009, after taking a break for two years, Sully Erna announced writing is underway for the fifth studio record, with the record likely to be released May 4,2010. On March 16,2009, while Godsmack were in the middle of writing the new record, Mötley Crüe announced the lineup for their annual summer festival tour, Crüe Fest 2. So the idea now is to finish, you know, this tour and get right into the studio, finish the record, drop it by early 2010 and fire up a huge world tour. During Crüe Fest 2, Godsmack released their first single in almost two years since the release of Good Times, Bad Times back in 2007, Whiskey Hangover reached #1 on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks, and became a live staple in Godsmacks shows during the summer festival. November 11,2009, Shannon Larkin announced the band is working with producer Dave Fortman with the band hoping to get the album out in February 2010, February 8,2010, Godsmack officially named its new album The Oracle, after initially calling it Saints & Sinners. February 26,2010, it was announced on the official website The Oracle will be released May 4,2010. The writing process, according to Shannon Larkin, was collaborative, stating that all four members of the band wrote the songs and Sully came up with the lyrics, were all in the room and we write the songs. Sully steps in with the vocals, but hes pretty great for that because he doesnt get excited much, so when he gets something that he thinks is good, its usually really good. Then he adds, Like I said, when I said collaborative, like all four, well play a riff, Ill come in with the drums, and next thing you know were jamming, and then it sounds like a verse, or a chorus or breakdown part. Alright, man, we got a verse, lets try to get a chorus for it. So, you know, thats how the process goes, so it is a full band collaboration, much more than ever. We all sat down and discussed what we wanted and expected each of us on this album. According to Sully Erna, he was looking for a producer who is known for producing great albums. When Sully talked about some producers he is interested in working with, Shannon suggested Dave Fortman, I played with him for five years, toured the world with him. 1000hp, stylized as 1000HP, is the sixth studio album by the American rock/metal band Godsmack. The album is a follow up to the bands 2010 gold-selling album The Oracle and was released on August 5,2014, on November 6,2013, it was reported that Godsmack had begun writing for the new album, yet to be titled 1000hp. On February 5,2014 frontman Sully Erna tweeted that the band has made headway in the songwriting process for album. The full track list was revealed on July 10, prior to the interview, and during a live Facebook Q&A chat, the band was asked whether every member contributed to the album. Erna was the one to answer that question, insisting that, very one contributed to this album, 1000hp was recorded in Godsmacks newly built 4, 000-square-foot headquarters in Boston. We just built it this year, explained bassist Robbie Merrill and we have been looking to have one big place for a long time. All our equipment has been stored in four or five different places, so we leased out a warehouse for at least five years. We went in there and put up walls and made a studio. We basically have all our stuff in storage at one end and at the end we have the rehearsal space and we have our studio all set to record, as well as the lounge. It was also great to do this album in our hometown and we are all born and raised in the Boston area and it was good for all of us to just soak up the atmosphere of the town and let it influence our music. I love the studio, said Fortman, I came back to get that unique sound for this new Godsmack record and we really nailed it and had a great time. It was great, said guitarist Tony Rombola in response to Guitar Worlds question regarding how it was working with Fortman. He has a lot of ideas and was a lot of fun to work with, hes also a guitar player and plays drums, so he was able to give us input and bounce ideas off of us. The album was co-produced by Sully Erna, on July 1, Godsmack debuted the album cover for 1000hp online at Revolver Magazines official website. The album cover plays off the theme of the title as it features the signature Godsmack sun logo. Then there’s Generation Day and Nothing Comes Easy, which are more epic and weird and unique and artsy, then there’s straight-up songs like Locked & Loaded and What’s Next that are in the same category. Erna went on to say that its funny how the songs are paired up like that and we wanted to be straight forward and simple, said Tony Rombola. I think that was the theme, There are elements of punk in some of the grooves that Sully brought in, and even in the selection of some of the riffs that I had as well

Salvatore Paul Sully Erna is the American vocalist and guitarist for the American hard rock band Godsmack. He is also a player, percussionist and pianist, performing these on albums. He was ranked 47th in the Top 100 Heavy Metal Vocalists by Hit Parader, Sully was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He began playing drums at the age of three and his father, Salvatore Erna, was a trumpet player and would rehearse in the basement where Sully would watch and fall asleep in an empty guitar case. His granduncle was a composer in Sicily, where every year they honor his music. At the age of 11, he discovered that it was easier for him to listen to something and he stopped taking lessons and practiced at home, rehearsing to records by Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Motörhead and Rush. At 14, Dave Vose became his new instructor and he signed his first record deal in 1993 with a band called Strip Mind. Their debut album Whats in Your Mouth sold fewer than 50,000 units, Then some of the band members and Erna didnt get along, and he was booted out. In Godsmack concerts he plays the bongos and a drum set. This battle has become a staple of the live show. He is also a player as present on the Godsmack song Shine Down. In 2010, Sully released his first solo album Avalon, the album took seven years to complete and differed stylistically from Godsmack. Sully wrapped up his tour with one final show at The House of Blues in Las Vegas. Erna has also worked with his local music scene, in April 2005, Sully participated in New Hampshires Battle of the Bands Competition. The winner had the opportunity to record a demo at Sullys California studio, Erna told Glam-Metal. com that doing his first solo shows were extremely nerve-wracking, adding, My first show, I was really, really nervous. Honestly, I havent been that nervous since I was, I dont know, Erna kicked off his first solo acoustic trek on 1 May in Niagara Falls, New York and closed it out on May 31 in Las Vegas. The shows have combined Godsmack songs with a few new originals, for example, Eyes of a Child and Until Then. It was an opportunity to showcase that and see if I can hit home with the people on those two pieces

Cary Sherman has been the RIAAs chairman and CEO since 2011, Sherman joined the RIAA as its general counsel in 1997 and became president of the board of directors in 2001, serving in that position until being made chairman and CEO. Mitch Glazier has been the RIAAs senior executive vice president since 2011 and he served as executive vice president for public policy and industry relations from 2000 to 2011. The past RIAA chairman and CEO is Mitch Bainwol, who served from 2003 to 2011 and he left in 2011 to become president and CEO of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.
