Ender's Game (film)

Enders Game is a 2013 American science fiction action film based on the novel of the same name by Orson Scott Card. The supporting cast includes Harrison Ford, Hailee Steinfeld, Viola Davis, with Abigail Breslin, the film was released in Germany on October 24,2013, followed by a release in the United Kingdom and Ireland one day later. It was released in the United States, Canada, and several countries on November 1,2013. Enders Game grossed $125.5 million on a $110–115 million budget, variety included the film in their list of Hollywoods Biggest Bombs of 2013. Over the course of fifty years, gifted children are trained by the International Fleet to become commanders of a new fleet for this counter-attack, cadet Andrew Ender Wiggin draws the attention of Colonel Hyrum Graff and Major Gwen Anderson by his aptitude in simulated space combat. They order the removal of his monitor, signifying the end of the cadet program, Ender is attacked by Stilson, a student he defeated in the combat sim, but Ender fights back and severely injures him. Ender confesses his grief to his older sister Valentine, but is harassed further by their older brother Peter, Graff arrives to reveal he was being tested and is still part of the program. Graff brings Ender to Battle School, placing Ender with other cadets his age, among other studies, the cadets are placed in squads and perform training games in a zero gravity Battle Room. Ender quickly adapts to the games, devising new strategies older students have not yet seen, Graff reassigns Ender to Salamander Army, led by Commander Bonzo Madrid. Bonzo, believing that Ender is inept due to his size, another cadet, Petra Arkanian, takes Ender and trains him privately. While Bonzo is aware of this, he not take any action against Petra. In one match, Bonzo orders Ender to stay behind while the rest of the Salamander Army fights another team, however, seeing Petra in trouble, Ender comes to her aid and helps the Salamander Army win. After the match, Bonzo is humiliated by the other students, meanwhile, Ender plays a computerized mind game set in a fantasy world aimed to present difficult choices to the player. In one situation, Ender creates an outside the box solution to overcome a seemingly unsolvable problem, later, he encounters a Formic in the game, and then a simulated image of Valentine entering the ruins of a castle. Inside, he finds another image of Valentine but as he nears, Graff promotes Ender to his own squad, made from other students that have gained Enders trust. They are put in difficult battles. In one match against two other teams including Bonzos squad, Ender devises a strategy of sacrificing part of his team to achieve a goal. Bonzo accosts Ender in the bathroom after the match, but Ender fights back and Bonzo falls during the struggle, distraught over this, Ender prepares to quit Battle School, but Graff has Valentine speak to him and convince him to continue

Orson Scott Card is an American novelist, critic, public speaker, essayist, and columnist. He writes in several genres but is known best for science fiction and his novel Enders Game and its sequel Speaker for the Dead both won Hugo and Nebula Awards, making Card the only author to win both science fictions top U. S. prizes in consecutive years. A feature film adaptation of Enders Game, which Card co-produced, was released in late October 2013 in Europe and on November 1,2013, a great-great-grandson of Brigham Young, Card is a practicing member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In addition to producing a body of fiction works, he has also offered political, religious. Card is the son of Willard Richards Card and Peggy Jane, the third of six children, Card was born in Richland, Washington, and grew up in Santa Clara, California as well as Mesa, Arizona and Orem, Utah. He served as a missionary for the LDS Church in Brazil and graduated from Brigham Young University, for part of the 1970s Card worked as an associate editor of the Ensign, an official magazine of the LDS Church. Card lives in Greensboro, North Carolina, a place that has played a significant role in Enders Game, Card began his writing career primarily as a poet, studying with Clinton F. Larson at BYU. He also explored fiction writing, beginning with stories that eventually evolved into The Worthing Saga, meanwhile, he took part-time employment as a proofreader at BYU Press, then made the jump to full-time employment as a copy editor. In 1976, in the midst of a paid role performing in the churchs musical celebrating Americas Bicentennial, he secured employment as an assistant editor at the Ensign and it was while working at Ensign that Card published his first piece of fiction. His short story Gert Fram appeared in the July 1977 fine arts issue of that magazine under the pseudonym Byron Walley and he wrote the short story Enders Game while working at the BYU press, and submitted it to several publications. The idea for the novel of the same title came from the short story about a school where boys can fight in space. It was eventually purchased by Ben Bova at Analog Science Fiction and Fact and he returned to full-time employment as the book editor for Compute. Magazine in Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1983, in October of that year, a new contract for the Alvin Maker trilogy allowed him to return to freelancing. Enders Game and its sequel Speaker for the Dead were both awarded the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award, making Card the only author to win both of science fictions top prizes in consecutive years. Card has also announced his plan to write Shadows Alive, a book that connects the Shadow series and he later also wrote the first formic war saga, Earth Unaware, Earth Afire, and Earth Awakens as a prequel to the Ender novels. This trilogy relays, among other things, the history of Mazer Rackham, the film was made several years later, and released in 2013, with Asa Butterfield in the title role and Gavin Hood directing. He collaborated with Star Wars artist Doug Chiang on Robota and with Kathryn H. Kidd on Lovelock and he has since branched out into other areas of fiction with novels such as Lost Boys, Treasure Box and Enchantment. John Harris is a British artist and illustrator, known for working in the science fiction genre. His paintings have been used on book covers for authors, including Orson Scott Card. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Frederik Pohl, Ben Bova, Wilbur Smith, Jack Vance and his work has covered many genres and although he made his name in the science-fiction genres, he is now exploring a new realm, the imaginative realism of aerial landscapes. John Harris began painting aged 14 and entered Luton College of Art at the age of 16, after completing a foundation course, he entered Exeter University in 1967 to study painting. Graduating in 1970 he travelled and studied transcendental meditation, an influence on his works. On his return to England in 1976, John Harris began exploring the theme of monumental scale and space, in the late 1970s he joined Young Artists, the premier agency for the emerging movement of science fiction art in the UK. Harris continued to specialise in large-scale commissions for such as Philips Electronics. His illustrations during this period have now become collectors items, including Jack McDevitts Nebula Award-winning Seeker and his painting MASS, The Building of FTL1 was used by Psygnosis for the cover of their 1990 video game Awesome. During the early 1980s Harris was commissioned by Sinclair Research to produce cover-art for the manuals of the ZX81. In 1984 Harris was commissioned to create a painting of the Endeavour space shuttle launch at NASAs Kennedy Space Centre and he was captivated by the intense tangerine glow created by the crafts vapor exhaust and made a painting of the shuttles gantry tower, bathed in light. That work now part of the Smithsonian Museum Collection, in 1998 The Royal Caribbean commissioned him to paint a number of large canvases to be displayed as permanent fixtures in their new range of ocean cruise ships, resulting in over 70 marine paintings. The majority of this collection being of the J-class trinity - Endeavour, Shamrock, in 2000 Paper Tiger Books published a collection of Harriss work, Mass. Rainmaker Entertainment based in Vancouver, hired Harris in 2007, to work on The Weinstein Companys movie, in 2010 Harris became associated with the Symposium of Imaginative Realism, a relationship which remains a key feature of his career. He is now a contributor to their exhibitions. In 2014, Titan Books published a new collection of his works, entitled Beyond the Horizon, Harris currently lives in Devon, England. Science fiction often explores the potential consequences of scientific and other innovations, and has been called a literature of ideas. Science fiction is difficult to define, as it includes a range of subgenres and themes. Author and editor Damon Knight summed up the difficulty, saying science fiction is what we point to when we say it, a definition echoed by author Mark C. Isaac Asimov and Carl Sagan considered Keplers work the first science fiction story and it depicts a journey to the Moon and how the Earths motion is seen from there. Later, Edgar Allan Poe wrote a story about a flight to the moon, more examples appeared throughout the 19th century. Wells The War of the Worlds describes an invasion of late Victorian England by Martians using tripod fighting machines equipped with advanced weaponry and it is a seminal depiction of an alien invasion of Earth. In the late 19th century, the scientific romance was used in Britain to describe much of this fiction. This produced additional offshoots, such as the 1884 novella Flatland, the term would continue to be used into the early 20th century for writers such as Olaf Stapledon. In the early 20th century, pulp magazines helped develop a new generation of mainly American SF writers, influenced by Hugo Gernsback, the founder of Amazing Stories magazine. Tor was founded by Tom Doherty in 1980, Tor is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning the peak of a rocky mountain as its logo shows. Tor Books was sold to St. Martins Press in 1987, along with St. Martins Press, Henry Holt, and Farrar, Straus and Giroux, it became part of the Holtzbrinck group, now part of the Macmillan in the US. A hardcover or hardback book is one bound with rigid protective covers. It has a flexible, sewn spine which allows the book to lie flat on a surface when opened, following the ISBN sequence numbers, books of this type may be identified by the abbreviation Hbk. Hardcover books are printed on acid-free paper, and are much more durable than paperbacks. Hardcover books are more costly to manufacture. If brisk sales are anticipated, an edition of a book is typically released first. Some publishers publish paperback originals if slow hardback sales are anticipated, for very popular books these sales cycles may be extended, and followed by a mass market paperback edition typeset in a more compact size and printed on shallower, less hardy paper. In the past the release of an edition was one year after the hardback. It is very unusual for a book that was first published in paperback to be followed by a hardback, an example is the novel The Judgment of Paris by Gore Vidal, which had its revised edition of 1961 first published in paperback, and later in hardcover. Hardcover books are sold at higher prices than comparable paperbacks. Hardcovers typically consist of a block, two boards, and a cloth or heavy paper covering. The pages are sewn together and glued onto a flexible spine between the boards, and it too is covered by the cloth, a paper wrapper, or dust jacket, is usually put over the binding, folding over each horizontal end of the boards. A paperback is a type of book characterized by a thick paper or paperboard cover, and often held together with glue rather than stitches or staples. In contrast, hardcover or hardback books are bound with cardboard covered with cloth, inexpensive books bound in paper have existed since at least the 19th century in such forms as pamphlets, yellowbacks, dime novels, and airport novels. Modern paperbacks can be differentiated by size, in the US there are mass-market paperbacks and larger, more durable trade paperbacks. In the UK, there are A-format, B-format, and the largest C-format sizes, Paperback editions of books are issued when a publisher decides to release a book in a low-cost format. Cheaper, lower quality paper, glued bindings, and the lack of a cover may contribute to the lower cost of paperbacks. Paperbacks can be the medium when a book is not expected to be a major seller or where the publisher wishes to release a book without putting forth a large investment. Examples include many novels, and newer editions or reprintings of older books, first editions of many modern books, especially genre fiction, are issued in paperback. Best-selling books, on the hand, may maintain sales in hardcover for an extended period in order to reap the greater profits that the hardcovers provide. These paper bound volumes were offered for sale at a fraction of the historic cost of a book, the Routledges Railway Library series of paperbacks remained in print until 1898, and offered the traveling public 1,277 unique titles. The German-language market also supported examples of cheap books, Bernhard Tauchnitz started the Collection of British. These inexpensive, paperbound editions, a precursor to mass-market paperbacks. Reclam published Shakespeare in this format from October 1857 and went on to pioneer the mass-market paper-bound Universal-Bibliothek series from 10 November 1867, the German publisher Albatross Books revised the 20th-century mass-market paperback format in 1931, but the approach of World War II cut the experiment short. The first released book on Penguins 1935 list was André Maurois Ariel, Lane intended to produce inexpensive books. He purchased paperback rights from publishers, ordered large print runs to keep prices low. Booksellers were initially reluctant to buy his books, but when Woolworths placed a large order, after that initial success, booksellers showed more willingness to stock paperbacks, and the name Penguin became closely associated with the word paperback. In 1939, Robert de Graaf issued a similar line in the United States, the term pocket book became synonymous with paperback in English-speaking North America. In French, the term livre de poche was used and is still in use today, de Graaf, like Lane, negotiated paperback rights from other publishers, and produced many runs. An electronic book is a book publication made available in digital form, consisting of text, images, or both, readable on the flat-panel display of computers or other electronic devices. Although sometimes defined as a version of a printed book. Commercially produced and sold e-books are usually intended to be read on dedicated e-reader devices, however, almost any sophisticated computer device that features a controllable viewing screen can also be used to read e-books, including desktop computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones. In the 2000s, there was a trend of print and e-book sales moving to the Internet, where readers buy traditional paper books and e-books on websites using e-commerce systems. With e-books, users can browse through online, and then when they select and order titles. At the start of 2012 in the U. S. more e-books were published online than were distributed in hardcover, the main reasons that people are buying e-books online are due to possibly lower prices, increased comfort and a larger selection of titles. With e-books, lectronic bookmarks make referencing easier, and e-book readers may allow the user to annotate pages, although fiction and non-fiction books come in e-book formats, technical material is especially suited for e-book delivery because it can be searched for keywords. In addition, for programming books, code examples can be copied, E-book reading is increasing in the U. S. by 2014, 28% of adults had read an e-book, compared to 23% in 2013. This is increasing, because by 2014 50% of American adults had an e-reader or a tablet, E-books are also referred to as ebooks, eBooks, e-Books, e-journals, e-editions or as digital books. The devices that are designed specifically for reading e-books are called e-readers, the idea of an e-reader that would enable a reader to view books on a screen came to Bob Brown after watching his first talkie. In 1930, he wrote a book on this idea and titled it The Readies, although Brown came up with the idea intellectually in the 1930s, early commercial e-readers did not follow his model. Schuessler relates it to a DJ spinning bits of old songs to create a beat or a new song as opposed to just a remix of a familiar song. The inventor of the first e-book is not widely agreed upon and her idea behind the device was to decrease the number of books that her pupils carried to school. The first e-book may be the Index Thomisticus, a heavily annotated electronic index to the works of Thomas Aquinas, prepared by Roberto Busa beginning in 1949, although originally stored on a single computer, a distributable CD-ROM version appeared in 1989. In 2005, the Index was published online, augment ran on specialized hardware, while FRESS ran on IBM mainframes. The International Standard Book Number is a unique numeric commercial book identifier. An ISBN is assigned to each edition and variation of a book, for example, an e-book, a paperback and a hardcover edition of the same book would each have a different ISBN. The ISBN is 13 digits long if assigned on or after 1 January 2007, the method of assigning an ISBN is nation-based and varies from country to country, often depending on how large the publishing industry is within a country. The initial ISBN configuration of recognition was generated in 1967 based upon the 9-digit Standard Book Numbering created in 1966, the 10-digit ISBN format was developed by the International Organization for Standardization and was published in 1970 as international standard ISO2108. Occasionally, a book may appear without a printed ISBN if it is printed privately or the author does not follow the usual ISBN procedure, however, this can be rectified later. Another identifier, the International Standard Serial Number, identifies periodical publications such as magazines, the ISBN configuration of recognition was generated in 1967 in the United Kingdom by David Whitaker and in 1968 in the US by Emery Koltay. The 10-digit ISBN format was developed by the International Organization for Standardization and was published in 1970 as international standard ISO2108, the United Kingdom continued to use the 9-digit SBN code until 1974. The ISO on-line facility only refers back to 1978, an SBN may be converted to an ISBN by prefixing the digit 0. For example, the edition of Mr. J. G. Reeder Returns, published by Hodder in 1965, has SBN340013818 -340 indicating the publisher,01381 their serial number. This can be converted to ISBN 0-340-01381-8, the check digit does not need to be re-calculated, since 1 January 2007, ISBNs have contained 13 digits, a format that is compatible with Bookland European Article Number EAN-13s. The Online Computer Library Center is a US-based nonprofit cooperative organization dedicated to the public purposes of furthering access to the worlds information and reducing information costs. It was founded in 1967 as the Ohio College Library Center, OCLC and its member libraries cooperatively produce and maintain WorldCat, the largest online public access catalog in the world. OCLC is funded mainly by the fees that libraries have to pay for its services, the group first met on July 5,1967 on the campus of the Ohio State University to sign the articles of incorporation for the nonprofit organization. The group hired Frederick G. Kilgour, a former Yale University medical school librarian, Kilgour wished to merge the latest information storage and retrieval system of the time, the computer, with the oldest, the library. The goal of network and database was to bring libraries together to cooperatively keep track of the worlds information in order to best serve researchers and scholars. The first library to do online cataloging through OCLC was the Alden Library at Ohio University on August 26,1971 and this was the first occurrence of online cataloging by any library worldwide. Membership in OCLC is based on use of services and contribution of data, between 1967 and 1977, OCLC membership was limited to institutions in Ohio, but in 1978, a new governance structure was established that allowed institutions from other states to join. In 2002, the structure was again modified to accommodate participation from outside the United States. As OCLC expanded services in the United States outside of Ohio, it relied on establishing strategic partnerships with networks, organizations that provided training, support, by 2008, there were 15 independent United States regional service providers. OCLC networks played a key role in OCLC governance, with networks electing delegates to serve on OCLC Members Council, in early 2009, OCLC negotiated new contracts with the former networks and opened a centralized support center. OCLC provides bibliographic, abstract and full-text information to anyone, OCLC and its member libraries cooperatively produce and maintain WorldCat—the OCLC Online Union Catalog, the largest online public access catalog in the world. Speaker for the Dead is a 1986 science fiction novel by Orson Scott Card and an indirect sequel to the novel Enders Game. The book takes place around the year 5270, some 3,000 years after the events in Enders Game, however, because of relativistic space travel, Ender himself is only about 35 years old. This is the first book to discuss the Starways Congress, a high standpoint Legislation for the human colonies and it is also the first to describe the Hundred Worlds, the planets with human colonies that are tightly intertwined by Ansible technology. Like Enders Game, the won the Nebula Award in 1986. Speaker for the Dead was published in a revised edition in 1991. It was followed by Xenocide and Children of the Mind, as humanity uses faster-than-light travel to establish new colonies, Ender quietly travels with them along with his sister Valentine to find a home for the Formic Queen to restart her species. Enders older brother, the aged Hegemon Peter Wiggin, recognizes Enders writings in The Hive Queen, Ender agrees, and authors The Hegemon. Some three thousand years after the xenocide, a colony is established on the planet Lusitania. The planet is home to a sentient species of mammalian forest dwellers called Piggies which proves to be of great interest to xenobiologists, however, shortly after the colonys founding, many of the colonists die from the Descolada virus before a cure is found. The colony is strictly regulated to only limited contact with the piggies to those xenobiologists. Xenologer Pipo and his son Libo raise Novinha whose parents died from Descolada, Pipo finds one of the males dead, his body eviscerated and a sapling planted within the body, believing this to be their funeral rites. Meanwhile, Novinha discovers that every lifeform on Lusitania carries the Descolada virus, when Pipo learns of this, he suddenly has an insight, and before he tells the others, races off to talk to the piggies. Pipos body is found cut open, but no sapling planted within the body. As Pipos death appears unprovoked, the piggies are now considered a threat by the Starways Congress, emotionally driven, she then makes a call for a Speaker for the Dead for Pipo. Over the course of time, Miro and Ouanda have fallen in love, with Enders arrival, Miro tells him that one of the piggies, Human, has taken a great interest in Ender, and Ender becomes aware that Human can hear messages from the Formic Hive Queen. Ender and Jane discover that Marcos was infertile, all six of Novinhas children, including Miro, were fathered by Libo, Ender also learns what Pipo had seen in Novinhas data. As word of Miros and Ouandas illegal sharing of technology with the piggies is reported to Congress. By the time Ender returns to the colony, Congress has ordered Miro and Ouanda to be sent off-planet for penal action, Ender delivers his eulogy for Marcos, revealing Novinhas infidelity

It exists in literature, comics, film, and video games. In some stories, however, technology is fairly static, and weapons that would be familiar to present-day soldiers are used, for example, women may be accepted as equal partners for combat roles. In many military sci-fi stories, technological advances are basic to plot development, several subsets of military science fiction overlap with space opera, concentrating on large-scale space battles with futuristic weapons. The term military space opera is occasionally used to denote this subgenre, another example of military space opera would be the Battlestar Galactica franchise. The key distinction of military science fiction space opera is that the principal characters in a space opera are not military personnel. Military science fiction also does not necessarily include an outer space or multi-planetary setting like space opera. Precursors for military science fiction can be found in war stories dating back at least to George Chesneys story The Battle of Dorking. Other works of fiction followed, including H. G. Wellss The Land Ironclads, eventually, as science fiction became an established and separate genre, military science fiction established itself as a subgenre. The Vietnam War resulted in veterans with combat experience deciding to write fiction, including Joe Haldeman. Throughout the 1970s, works such as Haldemans The Forever War, short stories also were popular, collected in books like Combat SF, edited by Gordon R. Dickson. This anthology includes one of the first Hammers Slammers stories as well as one of the BOLO stories by Keith Laumer and this anthology seems to have been the first time SF-stories specifically dealing with war as a subject were collected and marketed as such. The series of anthologies with the group title There Will be War edited by Pournelle and John F. Carr helped keep the category active, a number of authors have presented stories with political messages of varying types as major or minor themes of their works. David Drake has often written of the horrors and futility of war and it is science-fiction which attempts to realistically portray the military within a science-fiction context. Weightlessness

Counterintuitively, a uniform gravitational field does not by itself cause stress or strain, and a body in free fall in such an environment experiences no g-force acceleration and feels weightless. This is also termed zero-g where the term is more understood as meaning zero g-force. In such cases, a sensation of weight, in the sense of a state of stress can occur, in such cases, g-forces are felt, and bodies are not weightless. When the gravitational field is non-uniform, a body in free fall suffers tidal effects and is not stress-free, near a black hole, such tidal effects can be very strong. In the case of the Earth, the effects are minor, especially on objects of relatively small dimension and this condition is known as microgravity and it prevails in orbiting spacecraft. In October 2015, the NASA Office of Inspector General issued a health hazards related to human spaceflight. In Newtonian mechanics the term weight is two distinct interpretations by engineers. Weight1, Under this interpretation, the weight of a body is the force exerted on the body. Near the surface of the earth, a body mass is 1 kg has a weight of approximately 9.81 N, independent of its state of motion, free fall. Weightlessness in this sense can be achieved by removing the body far away from the source of gravity and it can also be attained by placing the body at a neutral point between two gravitating masses. Weight2, Weight can also be interpreted as that quantity which is measured when one uses scales, what is being measured there is the force exerted by the body on the scales. In a standard weighing operation, the body being weighed is in a state of equilibrium as a result of a force exerted on it by the weighing machine cancelling the gravitational field. By Newtons 3rd law, there is an equal and opposite force exerted by the body on the machine, typically, it is a contact force and not uniform across the mass of the body. If the body is placed on the scales in a lift in free fall in pure uniform gravity, the scale would read zero, and this describes the condition in which the body is stress free and undeformed. This is the weightlessness in free fall in a gravitational field. To sum up, we have two notions of weight of which weight1 is dominant, yet weightlessness is typically exemplified not by absence of weight1 but by the absence of stress associated with weight2. Military tactics are the science and art of organizing a military force, and the techniques for combining and using weapons and military units to engage and defeat an enemy in battle. Changes in philosophy and technology have been reflected in changes to military tactics, in contemporary military science, tactics are the lowest of three planning levels, strategic, operational, and tactical. The highest level of planning is strategy, how force is translated into political objectives by bridging the means, the intermediate level, operational, the conversion of strategy into tactics, deals with formations of units. Military tactics answer the questions of how best to deploy and employ forces on a small scale, some practices have not changed since the dawn of warfare, assault, ambushes, skirmishing, turning flanks, reconnaissance, creating and using obstacles and defenses, etc. Using ground to best advantage has not changed much either, heights, rivers, swamps, passes, choke points, and natural cover, can all be used in multiple ways. Before the nineteenth century, many tactics were confined to battlefield concerns. Nowadays, specialized tactics exist for many situations, for example for securing a room in a building, technological changes can render existing tactics obsolete, and sociological changes can shift the goals and methods of warfare, requiring new tactics. Analog Science Fiction and Fact is an American science-fiction magazine published under various titles since 1930. The first issue, titled Astounding Stories of Super-Science, was dated January 1930, published by William Clayton, Clayton went bankrupt in 1933 and the magazine was sold to Street & Smith. At the end of 1937, Campbell took over editorial duties under Tremaines supervision, the period beginning with Campbells editorship is often referred to as the Golden Age of Science Fiction. By 1950, new competition had appeared from Galaxy Science Fiction, in 1960, Campbell changed the title of the magazine to Analog Science Fiction & Fact, he had long wanted to get rid of the word Astounding in the title, which he felt was too sensational. At about the same time Street & Smith sold the magazine to Condé Nast, Campbell remained as editor until his death in 1971. Ben Bova took over from 1972 to 1978, and the character of the magazine changed noticeably, Bova won five consecutive Hugo Awards for his editing of Analog. The title was sold to Davis Publications in 1980, then to Dell Magazines in 1992, Crosstown Publications acquired Dell in 1996 and remains the publisher. Schmidt continued to edit the magazine until 2012, when he was replaced by Trevor Quachri, in 1926, Hugo Gernsback launched Amazing Stories, the first science-fiction magazine. Amazing was very successful, quickly reaching a circulation over 100,000, Clayton was unconvinced, but the following year decided to launch a new magazine, mainly because the sheet on which the color covers of his magazines were printed had a space for one more cover. He suggested to Harry Bates, a newly hired editor, that start a magazine of historical adventure stories. Bates proposed instead a science-fiction pulp, to be titled Astounding Stories of Super Science, Astounding was initially published by Publishers Fiscal Corporation, a subsidiary of Clayton Magazines. The first issue appeared in January 1930, with Bates as editor, Bates aimed for straightforward action-adventure stories, with scientific elements only present to provide minimal plausibility. In February 1931, the original name Astounding Stories of Super-Science was shortened to Astounding Stories, the magazine was profitable, but the Depression caused Clayton problems. Normally a publisher would pay a printer three months in arrears, but when a credit squeeze began in May 1931, it led to pressure to reduce this delay. The financial difficulties led Clayton to start alternating the publication of his magazines, some printers bought the magazines which were indebted to them, Clayton decided to buy his printer to prevent this from happening. As it turned out, enough stories were in inventory, and enough paper was available, to one further issue. In April, Clayton went bankrupt, and sold his titles to T. R. Foley for $100, Foley resold them in August to Street & Smith. Science fiction was not entirely a departure for Street & Smith, the first Street & Smith issue was dated October 1933, until the third issue, in December 1933, the editorial team was not named on the masthead

The Soviet Union, officially the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was a socialist state in Eurasia that existed from 1922 to 1991. It was nominally a union of national republics, but its government. The Soviet Union had its roots in the October Revolution of 1917 and this established the Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic and started the Russian Civil War between the revolutionary Reds and the counter-revolutionary Whites. In 1922, the communists were victorious, forming the Soviet Union with the unification of the Russian, Transcaucasian, Ukrainian, following Lenins death in 1924, a collective leadership and a brief power struggle, Joseph Stalin came to power in the mid-1920s. Stalin suppressed all opposition to his rule, committed the state ideology to Marxism–Leninism. As a result, the country underwent a period of rapid industrialization and collectivization which laid the foundation for its victory in World War II and postwar dominance of Eastern Europe. Shortly before World War II, Stalin signed the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact agreeing to non-aggression with Nazi Germany, in June 1941, the Germans invaded the Soviet Union, opening the largest and bloodiest theater of war in history. Soviet war casualties accounted for the highest proportion of the conflict in the effort of acquiring the upper hand over Axis forces at battles such as Stalingrad. Soviet forces eventually captured Berlin in 1945, the territory overtaken by the Red Army became satellite states of the Eastern Bloc. The Cold War emerged by 1947 as the Soviet bloc confronted the Western states that united in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in 1949. Following Stalins death in 1953, a period of political and economic liberalization, known as de-Stalinization and Khrushchevs Thaw, the country developed rapidly, as millions of peasants were moved into industrialized cities. The USSR took a lead in the Space Race with Sputnik 1, the first ever satellite, and Vostok 1. In the 1970s, there was a brief détente of relations with the United States, the war drained economic resources and was matched by an escalation of American military aid to Mujahideen fighters. In the mid-1980s, the last Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, sought to reform and liberalize the economy through his policies of glasnost. The goal was to preserve the Communist Party while reversing the economic stagnation, the Cold War ended during his tenure, and in 1989 Soviet satellite countries in Eastern Europe overthrew their respective communist regimes. This led to the rise of strong nationalist and separatist movements inside the USSR as well, in August 1991, a coup détat was attempted by Communist Party hardliners. It failed, with Russian President Boris Yeltsin playing a role in facing down the coup. The Cold War was a state of geopolitical tension after World War II between powers in the Eastern Bloc and powers in the Western Bloc. Historians do not fully agree on the dates, but a common timeframe is the period between 1947, the year the Truman Doctrine was announced, and 1991, the year the Soviet Union collapsed. The term cold is used there was no large-scale fighting directly between the two sides, although there were major regional wars, known as proxy wars, supported by the two sides. The Cold War split the temporary alliance against Nazi Germany, leaving the Soviet Union. The USSR was a Marxist–Leninist state ruled by its Communist Party and secret police, the Party controlled the press, the military, the economy and all organizations. In opposition stood the West, dominantly democratic and capitalist with a free press, a small neutral bloc arose with the Non-Aligned Movement, it sought good relations with both sides. The two superpowers never engaged directly in full-scale armed combat, but they were armed in preparation for a possible all-out nuclear world war. The first phase of the Cold War began in the first two years after the end of the Second World War in 1945, the Berlin Blockade was the first major crisis of the Cold War. With the victory of the communist side in the Chinese Civil War and the outbreak of the Korean War, the USSR and USA competed for influence in Latin America, and the decolonizing states of Africa and Asia. Meanwhile, the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 was stopped by the Soviets, the expansion and escalation sparked more crises, such as the Suez Crisis, the Berlin Crisis of 1961, and the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. The USSR crushed the 1968 Prague Spring liberalization program in Czechoslovakia, détente collapsed at the end of the decade with the beginning of the Soviet–Afghan War in 1979. The early 1980s were another period of elevated tension, with the Soviet downing of Korean Air Lines Flight 007, the United States increased diplomatic, military, and economic pressures on the Soviet Union, at a time when the communist state was already suffering from economic stagnation. In the mid-1980s, the new Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev introduced the reforms of perestroika and glasnost. Pressures for national independence grew stronger in Eastern Europe, especially Poland, Gorbachev meanwhile refused to use Soviet troops to bolster the faltering Warsaw Pact regimes as had occurred in the past. The result in 1989 was a wave of revolutions that peacefully overthrew all of the communist regimes of Central, the Communist Party of the Soviet Union itself lost control and was banned following an abortive coup attempt in August 1991. This in turn led to the dissolution of the USSR in December 1991. The United States remained as the only superpower. The Cold War and its events have left a significant legacy and it is often referred to in popular culture, especially in media featuring themes of espionage and the threat of nuclear warfare

The Nebula Awards annually recognize the best works of science fiction or fantasy published in the United States. The awards are organized and awarded by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and they were first given in 1966 at a ceremony created for the awards, and are given in four categories for different lengths of literary works. A fifth category for film and television episode scripts was given 1974–78, the rules governing the Nebula Awards have changed several times during the awards history, most recently in 2010. SFWA numbers the awards by the prior to the year the award is given in. For lists of winners and nominees for each Nebula category, see the list of categories below, the Nebula Awards are given annually by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America for the best science fiction or fantasy fiction published during the previous year. To be eligible for consideration works must be published in English in the United States, works published in English elsewhere in the world are also eligible provided they are released on either a website or in an electronic edition. The awards are not limited to American citizens or members of SFWA, works translated into English are also eligible. There are no rules as to which works qualify as science fiction or fantasy. The winner receives a trophy but no prize, the trophy is a transparent block with an embedded glitter spiral nebula. The trophy itself was designed for the first awards by J. A. Lawrence, based on a sketch by Kate Wilhelm, Nebula Award nominees and winners are chosen by members of the SFWA. Additional nominees are possible in the case of ties, members then vote on the ballot throughout March, and the final results are presented at the Nebula Awards ceremony in May. Authors are not permitted to nominate their own works, though they can decline nominations, ties in the final vote are broken, if possible, by the number of nominations the works received. The first Nebulas were given in 1966, for works published in 1965, the idea for such an award, funded by the sales of anthologies collecting the winning works, was proposed by SFWA secretary-treasurer Lloyd Biggle, Jr. in 1965. The idea was based on the Edgar Awards, presented by the Mystery Writers of America, the initial ceremony consisted of four literary awards, for Novels, Novellas, Novelettes, and Short Stories, which have been presented every year since. Prior to 2009, the Nebula Awards employed a rolling eligibility system, each work was eligible to qualify for the ballot for one year following its date of publication. As a consequence of rolling eligibility, there was the possibility for works to be nominated in the year after their publication. The Hugo Awards are a set of awards given annually for the best science fiction or fantasy works and achievements of the previous year. The awards are named after Hugo Gernsback, the founder of the science fiction magazine Amazing Stories. Organized and overseen by the World Science Fiction Society, the awards are given each year at the annual World Science Fiction Convention as the focus of the event. They were first given in 1953, at the 11th World Science Fiction Convention, the Hugo Awards have been termed as among the highest honors bestowed in science fiction and fantasy writing. Works that have won have been published in collections. The 2016 awards were presented at the 74th Worldcon, MidAmeriCon II, in Kansas City, United States, the 2017 Hugos will be presented at the 75th Worldcon, Worldcon 75, in Helsinki, Finland, on August 12,2017. Xenocide

Xenocide is the third novel in the Enders Game series of books by Orson Scott Card. It was nominated for both the Hugo and Locus Awards for Best Novel in 1992. The title is a combination of xeno-, meaning alien, and -cide, referring to the act of killing, altogether referring to the act of selectively killing populations of aliens, a play on genocide. On Lusitania, Ender finds a world where humans and pequeninos and the Hive Queen could all live together, Lusitania also harbors the descolada, a virus that kills all humans it infects, but which the pequininos require in order to become adults. The Starways Congress so fears the effects of the descolada, should it escape from Lusitania, that they have ordered the destruction of the entire planet, with The Fleet on its way, a second xenocide seems inevitable. The pequeninos are native to the planet, while the Hive Queen was transplanted to this world by Ender, the Lusitanian ecosystem is pervaded by a complex virus, dubbed Descolada by humans. The Descolada breaks apart and rearranges the basic structure of living cells. It is extremely adaptable to any species or form of known life, the native pequeninos and other life that survived on Lusitania after the Descoladas introduction to the planet thousands of years ago are adapted to it. As a result of the virus, the Lusitanian ecosystem is severely limited. Staying alive on Lusitania takes immense effort and research on the part of the Hive Queen, Valentine Wiggin, under her pseudonym Demosthenes, publishes a series of articles revealing the presence of the Little Doctor planet-annihilating weapon on the Fleet. Demosthenes calls it the Second Xenocide, as using the weapon will result in the obliteration of the only intelligent alien life. She also claims it to be a crackdown of any colony world striving for autonomy from Starways Congress. Public anger spreads through humanity, and rebellions nearly ensue on several colonies, after quelling much public discontent, Starways Congress finishes their analysis of the situation while the fleet is en route. After conferring with friends on whether a cause is worth dying for, as a consequence of this action, she risks her eventual discovery and death, should the government shut down and wipe the interplanetary network. No known smaller computer system can house her consciousness, on Lusitania itself, Ender attempts to find solutions to the looming catastrophes of the Congressional fleet, Descolada virus, and conflicts among the humans and intelligent alien species. Much on Lusitania centers around the Ribeira family, including Enders wife Novinha, Novinha and Elanora, the mother-daughter team responsible for most of the biological advances countering the complex Descolada virus, are unsure if they can manufacture a harmless replacement virus. Conflicts arise on whether they should even do so, since the Descolada is intrinsically tied in with the cycles of all Lusitanian organisms. The third biologista of the family, Quara, is convinced that the Descolada is an intelligent, self-aware species, Starways Congress wants its fleet back

Children of the Mind is the fourth book of Orson Scott Cards popular Enders Game series of science fiction novels that focus on the character Ender Wiggin. This book was originally the second half of Xenocide, before it was split into two novels and she uses these powers to move them to distant habitable planets for colonization. She is losing her memory and concentration as the vast computer network connected to the ansible is being shut down, if she is to survive, she must find a way to transfer her aiúa to a human body. Peter Wiggin and Si Wang-Mu travel to the worlds of Divine Wind, by tracing the decision-making trail backwards, they are able to show a philosopher his influence on the Starways Congress. After several complications, the philosopher convinces the Tsutsumi clan to exert their influence with the Necessarian faction in the Starways Congress to stop the Lusitania fleet. Upon Ender Wiggins death, Jane guides his aiúa to Peters body, while she is granted possession of Young Vals body and she is then able to continue transporting starships instantaneously by borrowing the vast mental capacity of the simple-minded Pequenino mother-trees. She gets Peter and Wang-Mu close enough to the MD missile and transport it back to the Lusitania fleet, Peter and Wang-Mus efforts finally come to fruition, and the destruction of Lusitania is averted. Jane falls in love with Miro, and Peter with Wang-mu, both couples are married under one of the mother-trees of the pequeninos on the same day as Enders funeral

Ender in Exile is a science fiction novel by Orson Scott Card, part of the Enders Game series, published on November 11,2008. It takes place between the two award-winning novels, Enders Game and Speaker for the Dead and it could also be considered a parallel novel to the first three sequels in the Shadow Saga, since the entirety of this trilogy takes place in the span of Ender in Exile. The novel concludes a story line of the Shadow Saga. From yet another perspective, the novel expands the last chapter of the original novel Enders Game, on the one hand, it fills the gap right before the last chapter, and on the other hand, it fills the gap between the last chapter and the original sequel. Ender in Exile begins one year after Ender has won the bugger war, other short stories that were published elsewhere are included as chapters of the novel. Ender is offered the Governorship of the first human colony to be planted on one of the Buggers former worlds, a planet that will eventually become known as Shakespeare. On their way to the Shakespeare colony, Valentine begins writing her History of the Bugger Wars books while Ender has a power struggle with the Captain of the ship. There is also a romance between Ender and a girl named Alessandra, once the ship lands on Shakespeare, Ender, who had spent much of his trip learning the names and lives of the colonys residents, takes charge of the colony and wins the colonists over. Ender resides as Governor for a few years in Shakespeare, near the end of his time as governor, Ender and a young boy from the colony named Abra go to find a site for a new shipment of colonists. Ender wants the new settlement to be far away from the other settlements that there will not be competition between them right away, and so they can develop separately. In the process of finding a location for new settlement, Ender stumbles upon what seems to be the equivalent of a note from the Buggers and it is a structure made to look like a game he used to play in Battle School. When Ender goes to investigate the structure, he finds the living pupa of a Bugger Hive Queen that is fertilized and prepared to make hundreds of thousands of offspring upon its own maturation, the find leads Ender to write his first book as the Speaker for the Dead. It is a book titled The Hive Queen and it tries to look at the Bugger wars, later, Peter Wiggin, nearing the end of his life and knowing that Ender wrote the story, asks him to write one for him for when he dies. This book becomes known as The Hegemon, after this, Ender resigns as Governor of Shakespeare and leaves the colony for another called Ganges. The leader of Ganges is Virlomi, here he encounters Randall Firth who believes himself to be the son of Achilles de Flandres, and even refers to himself by the name Achilles. Randall spreads propaganda accusing Ender of Xenocide in an attempt to discredit Virlomi and get revenge against Peter Wiggin, Randall tries twice to meet with Ender and discredit him somehow. On the second visit his plan is to cleverly provoke Ender into killing him so that people see how violent and dangerous he is. A War of Gifts, An Ender Story is a science fiction novel by Orson Scott Card. This book is set in Cards Enders Game series and takes place during Ender Wiggins time at Battle School as described in Cards novels Enders Game, a War of Gifts begins in North Carolina where Zechariah Zeck Morgan, a boy with nearly perfect memory, lives with his family. Though Zeck’s father is the minister of his own church and has raised Zeck to be a pacifist, when the International Fleet shows up to take Zeck to Battle School, Zeck’s mother sees this as the perfect opportunity to get the boy away from his abusive father. The story takes place when Ender is just newly transferred to Rat Army, at Battle School, the other students barely tolerate Zeck because of his strong religious beliefs and his refusal to fight in the Battle Room. On December fifth Zeck sees a Dutch boy put a Sinterklaas Day gift in another Dutch boy’s shoe, when Zeck complains to the authorities, they refuse to do anything. Zeck goes to the Muslim students and points out that the Christians are being allowed to celebrate their holidays, some of the Muslim students begin daily prayers. When the administration forcibly stops the Muslims from praying, the students stop giving each other Christmas presents. They also refuse to speak to Zeck, when he begins to have a nervous breakdown because of the isolation, Ender Wiggin decides to have a talk with him. In doing so, Ender discovers that Zeck was desperately trying to get sent back home so that he could protect his mother from his father, after he convinces Zeck that his mother doesnt need to be protected, Ender gives him a small Santa Claus present. When the other students learn that Zeck accepted the gift, they stop ignoring him, the chief complaint with the story is that although it raises the issues of faith, religious freedom and religious suppression, it does so in a very superficial manner. Some critics have commented on the character of Ender Wiggin who is described as being too Christ-like to be believable. Chapter 2 of the piece, Ender’s Stocking, originally appeared in form as short story Enders Stocking. This chapter has been criticized for seeming to be unrelated to the rest of the book and this is Alai, who becomes the Caliph in the Shadow series

It was originally to be titled Urchin, but it was retitled Enders Shadow prior to release. Enders Shadow was shortlisted for a Locus Award in 2000, Bean, the main character, is a homeless child living in the hellish streets of Rotterdam in roughly 2170 after escaping as an infant from an illegal genetic engineering laboratory. Highly intelligent and extremely young, Bean is mainly concerned with his need for food and he joins a large gang of children led by a girl named Poke and sets up a system in which they can all receive nourishment at a local soup kitchen. Specifically, the group gets a bully, Achilles, to be their protector, however, Achilles is increasingly ruthless, protective, and methodical. Luckily for Bean, his mind, creativity and determination bring him to the attention of Sister Carlotta. At the training facility, Battle School, Beans intelligence becomes apparent, not only is he smarter than average, he is smarter than any other child at Battle School, including Ender Wiggin. Despite Beans intelligence, Ender has been chosen to save humanity from the Buggers, throughout the book, the main theme rests on Beans struggle against the IF administration, which seems bent on breaking Ender, even if it means murder. Throughout all of this, Bean has to contend with the reappearance of Achilles and he also makes friends with an older boy named Nikolai who is drawn to Bean because of their similar looks. It is soon discovered, through Sister Carlottas research, that the two boys are genetic twins, except for Beans genetic enhancements, Sister Carlotta ensures that Bean will get to live with Nikolai and his parents after the war. In addition, the book depicts the first of Beans encounters with Achilles, at the end of the story, after they defeat the buggers, Bean is united with his real parents and Nikolai. Enders Shadow is the first of a series that includes Shadow of the Hegemon, Shadow Puppets, Shadow of the Giant, Shadows in Flight, a five-issue comic book limited series based on Enders Shadow, called Enders Shadow, Battle School. Gavin Hood is a South African filmmaker, screenwriter, producer and actor, best known for writing and directing Tsotsi, which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He also directed the films X-Men Origins, Wolverine, Enders Game, Hood got his start directing when commissioned to make several short educational dramas for the South African Department of Health. His first commercial film was The Storekeeper. Hood co-produced and wrote the script for his first feature film, A Reasonable Man and he then directed the Polish language 2001 feature film In Desert and Wilderness when the original director fell ill. Tsotsi won the 2005 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in 2006, Hood was also nominated for the 2005 Non-European Film—Prix Screen International at the European Film Awards for his work on the film. In 2000, Variety magazine named him as one of its Ten Directors to Watch and he directed Rendition, his first Hollywood feature, for New Line Cinema. He also directed the film X-Men Origins, Wolverine, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, prior to the films release, Gavin talked about the political undertones of the new Wolverine movie, Any movie that is simply about good versus evil. After all, the most famous line from Wolverine, the comics, is I am the best there is at what I do, in 2011, Hood began work at the helm of novelist Orson Scott Cards Enders Game. He wrote a draft of Cards screenplay and directed the film, Enders Game was released in U. S. theaters on 1 November 2013. Hood directed and acted in Eye in the Sky released on September 15,2015 at the TIFF in Toronto, Hood also acts occasionally, most notably in In Enemy Hands and the Stargate SG-1 episode Lockdown. In the early 90s, Hood made notable appearances in two martial arts films shot on location in South Africa. In American Kickboxer, he played the role of Ken. In Kickboxer 5, he played a German kickboxing champion who faces off, in his 2013 directorial project, Hood appeared as the voice and motion-capture performance of the Giant in the mind game of Enders Game. Asa Maxwell Thornton Farr Butterfield is an English actor. He began his career at the age of 9 in the television drama After Thomas. He also played the young Mordred in the hit BBC TV Series Merlin and Norman in the fantasy film Nanny McPhee and he is also known for portraying Ender Wiggin in the 2013 film adaptation of the science fiction novel Enders Game by Orson Scott Card. He was nominated for a British Independent Film Award for Best Actor for playing Nathan Ellis in Morgan Matthewss X+Y and he starred as Jacob Jake Portman in Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children and as Gardner Elliot in The Space Between Us. Butterfield was born in Islington, London, and is the son of Jacqueline Farr and he was born with the middle names Maxwell Thornton, but now uses the middle name Bopp on his passport instead. Butterfield first started acting at the age of 7 on Friday afternoons after school at the Young Actors Theatre Islington, later, he secured minor roles in the 2006 television drama After Thomas and the 2007 film, Son of Rambow. In 2008, he had a guest role playing Donny in Ashes to Ashes, in that same year, aged 10, he played the lead role in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. Director Mark Herman said that came across Butterfield early on in the audition process. He was on the first audition tape he received and he was the third hopeful he met in person, Herman thought Butterfields performance was outstanding, but only decided to cast him after auditioning hundreds of other boys, so no stone was left unturned. Producer David Heyman and director Mark Herman were looking for someone who was able to portray the main characters innocence, Butterfields knowledge was slim and it was purposely kept that way throughout filming so it would be easier for him to convey his characters innocence. The final scenes of the film were shot at the end of the period to prepare both him and Jack Scanlon for the dramatic ending of the film. He beat hundreds of boys to the role and also passed the auditions for a role in Mr. Nobody for which he auditioned at the same time. He elected not to pursue the latter role, in 2008, Butterfield appeared in the Merlin episode The Beginning of the End, he played a young druid boy sentenced to death by Uther Pendragon because he feels threatened by the boys magic. Despite the Great Dragons advice and the warning that Arthur cannot survive if the boy does, Merlin and Arthur, with the help of Morgana, help the boy escape to rejoin the Druids. When they are about to disappear into the forest, Arthur asks him for his name, which he says is Mordred, Butterfield appeared as Mordred in a number of subsequent episodes, however the role was recast, with Alexander Vlahos playing Mordred as an adult character. In 2010, he had a part in The Wolfman. He starred as Norman Green at the age of 12 in Nanny McPhee, the film, and his performance, both received positive reviews. At the age of 13 he played the main and title character in Martin Scorseses Hugo, Hugo was filmed from June 2010 to January 2011, it was released on 23 November 2011, and achieved critical and box-office success

Earth Unaware is a science fiction novel by Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston in the Enders Game series. Published in 2012, it is the first book of a trilogy to Enders Game. The novel is set before Ender Wiggin is born and tells the story of the first Formic War, Earth Afire, the second book in the trilogy, was released on June 4,2013, and the conclusion, Earth Awakens, was released June 10,2014. Back on Earth, Captain Wit OToole goes recruiting among the elite New Zealand Special Air Service for the more select. Jukes orders his ship to bump El Cavador from the asteroid the family is mining, during the violent collision, an El Cavador crewman is killed. The miners hack into the corporate network, planting a message for Lem Jukes. El Cavadors transmission equipment having been destroyed in the bump, the crew are unable to warn another mining clan about the intruder, El Cavador rescues a few survivors. In the meantime, Victor and a few others modify a quickship, when the pod attacks El Cavador, the men on the quickship ram and disable the pod using mining equipment. During the attack, the aliens emerge to battle the humans and their physiology is revealed to be Formic. El Cavador heads to Weigh Station Four to use their laserline transmitter, as a backup, Victor volunteers to take a datacube with the evidence of the aliens hostile intentions to Luna aboard the quickship. The journey is perilous, but their duty is clear, meanwhile, the Juke ship makes its way to Weigh Station Four, only to come under attack from roughnecks who recognize the crew as despised corporates. Several of the attackers are killed by Chubs, a man seemingly junior to Lem Jukes, the corporates are still able to leave behind a hacker to strip El Cavadors files, but the scheme becomes moot when the Formic ship destroys the station. El Cavador sends a short-range, broad radio call and is able to contact the Juke ship, El Cavador sends its women and children aboard the Chinese vessel, which is too small to help in the attack. The plan is to plant mining explosives along the hull of the alien ship, unfortunately, one of them detonates early, drawing the attention of the Formics, who at first engage the humans wearing space suits, but subsequently attack without any protection. Seeing the battle go against them, Chubs withdraws Lem Jukes and his men and moves the ship away. Victor arrives at Luna, only to be ignored and confined for his illegal arrival. Meanwhile, Wit OToole prepares his MOPs for any situation, including what he thinks is an alien attack. Victor is eventually assigned a case worker who believes his story and helps him transmit the evidence onto the Nets

Earth Afire is a science fiction novel by Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston, and the second book of the Formic Wars novels in the Enders Game series. It was nominated for the Goodreads Choice Award for science fiction, a century before the events of Enders Game, an alien spaceship enters the solar system and soon makes known its hostile intentions by destroying harmless human ships. Then, it out a ragtag fleet of asteroid miners who have banded together in a desperate attempt to stop it. All of the male members of Victor Delgados extended clan die in the battle. The survivors are unable to transmit a warning, so Victor volunteers for a mission to try to reach Earth in a tiny. He makes it to the Moon, but is unable to get the authorities to take him seriously, thus, humanity is totally unprepared when the First Formic War starts. The invader sends three enormous landing craft to southeast China, the Formics emerge and use gas to defoliate the area and kill everyone. Despite suffering stupendous losses, the suspicious Chinese government refuses outside help, during the Formic invasion, he saves Bingwen, a very intelligent eight-year-old Chinese boy, but is then shot down. Bingwen saves his life, with the help of Mazers romantic interest. Bingwen and Mazer then set off to destroy the nearest Formic lander, the Mobile Operations Police, a small but elite international force, enters China. The MOPs save Bingwen and Mazer from a Formic attack, the lander is heavily shielded, but it does not extend underground. Mazer manages to find some drill sledges and HERCs to transport them close to the lander, MOP Captain Wit OToole obtains a tactical nuclear weapon from anonymous Chinese who do not agree with their governments stance on foreign assistance. They destroy the lander, but then Captain Shenzu arrives and places Mazer under arrest, meanwhile, Victor and Imala manage to drift close to the Formic ship, using a disguised ship provided by Lem Jukes to avoid being destroyed. Mazer in Prison is a story by Orson Scott Card set in his Enders Game universe. It tells the story of how Mazer Rackham and Hyrum Graff started Battle School and it appears in Cards Webzine InterGalactic Medicine Show. Mazer in Prison is the story of Mazer Rackham, the hero who saved the planet Earth in the second Formics invasion, as soon as the battle was over, Earth put together a fleet to send to the Formics home worlds to end the conflict once and for all. Since he knew that he was not the best person to lead the fleet and he then forced them to find a new fleet commander and arranged to have a young Hyrum Graff set up the Battle School to train possible candidates. The story was read by Audie Award winner Stefan Rudnicki, Mazer in Prison was published in the October 2005 issue of Intergalactic Medicine Show. It also appears in the anthology Orson Scott Cards InterGalactic Medicine Show and it was also published in Subterranean Presss Subterranean Magazine Issue #5. First Meetings is a collection of Orson Scott Cards short stories from the Enders Game series. The stories in this book are, The Polish Boy – Tells the story of how Jan Paweł Wieczorek as a child gets tested by the International Fleet. Teachers Pest – Tells the story of how John Paul Wiggin meets, Enders Game – First appeared in the August 1977 issue of Analog magazine and was later expanded into the novel Enders Game. Although the foundation of the Enders Game series, the story is not properly part of the Enders Game universe. Investment Counselor – Tells the story of how Ender Wiggin first met the artificial intelligence Jane and it first appeared in the anthology Far Horizons edited by Robert Silverberg. Polish, Jan Paweł Wieczorek is a smart child who is being home schooled because his family refused to comply with the populations control laws. One day, Captain Helena Rudolf from the International Fleet shows up to test three of John Pauls brothers for possible admission into Battle School and she notices John Paul reading a book and decides to test him early. He passes the test and gets a high score for leadership. The IF tries to get him to go to Battle School, Captain Graff realizes this, but agrees to send the Wieczorek family to America because he hopes that one of John Pauls children will go to Battle School. This story contains younger versions of important characters in the Enderverse, such as Enders father John Paul Wieczorek, Hyrum Graff, other characters associated with the IF appear, including Captain Helena Rudolf and Colonel Sillian. While going to college, John Paul is assigned to take a Human Communities class being taught by Theresa Brown. Unfortunately, she has just been told that her research project is being taken away from her in an effort to get her father Admiral Brown to come out of retirement, as a result, she does not want to speak to anyone. Determined, John Paul waits outside her office and orders food for her while she talks to her father on the phone, when she finally comes out, he is still waiting for her. She decides to eat him, and during the meal John Paul tells her about his secret past. As they continue to talk, they begin to fall in love, even as they realize that they were both set up by the government to do so. This story begins as Ender is made the commander of Dragon Army at Battle School, armies are groups of students that fight mock battles in the Battle Room, a null gravity environment, and are subdivided into toons. Due to Enders genius in leadership, Dragon Army dominates the competition, here, veteran Mazer Rackham tutors him in the use of a space battle simulator. Eventually, many of his former toon leaders serve under him once more, once familiar with the simulator, they fight a series of what Mazer tells them are mock battles against a computer-controlled enemy

When he and his mother went to see his grandmother Bonito learned that his father was having an affair with another woman and had broken his mothers heart, because Bonito did not want to be like his father, he changed his mind and went to Battle School. Cheater is a story by Orson Scott Card set in his Enders Game universe. It tells the story of how Hot Soup Han Tzu got into Battle School and it appears in Cards Webzine InterGalactic Medicine Show. Cheater is the story of Han Tzu as a child, Han Tzu was born in Nanyang, China and was a descendent of Yuan Shikai, a great Chinese general. From a very young age, Han Tzus father would play with him every day and it was his wish that Han Tzu would become a great general and bring glory back to China. When he got an older, tutors began to come to his house to play games with him. After a while, Han Tzu discovered that the games were actually to prepare him for a test, one day, his tutor began teaching Han Tzu games from a list that his father had provided. When the testers from the International Fleet showed up to give Han Tzu the test, Han Tzu didnt want to pretend to be the best so he answered all the questions wrong. The next day, the people from the International Fleet showed up at Han Tzus house and arrested his father for cheating but decided to test Han Tzu again, the story was read by Orson Scott Card himself. Cheater was published in the October 2006 issue of Intergalactic Medicine Show and it also appears in the anthology Orson Scott Cards InterGalactic Medicine Show

Shadow of the Hegemon

Shadow of the Hegemon is the second novel in the Enders Shadow series by Orson Scott Card. It is also the novel in the Enders Game series. It is told mostly from the point of view of Bean, Shadow of the Hegemon was nominated for a Locus Award in 2002. The Delphikis go into hiding, while Bean joins forces with Sister Carlotta, after he discovers an encoded message sent by Petra confirming that the Russians are Achilles backers, he works to free her and the others, while helping Peter come to power. When Peter publishes under the Locke pseudonym that Achilles is a murderer, the Battle School graduates are released, excepting Petra, Petra finds an ally in Virlomi, who reveals to Bean that Petra is a prisoner, and eventually escapes the military compound to bring rescue. Courtesy of Beans and Sister Carlottas assets, Locke is nominated publicly for the position of Hegemon, meanwhile, Bean enters the Thai military under the patronage of Suriyawong, a fellow Battle School graduate and head of Thailands planning division, and trains 200 Thai soldiers against India. When the Thai Commander-in-Chief betrays Suriyawong and Bean, Bean hides himself and Suri in the barracks of his troops, Bean and Suriyawong use the troops Bean has trained to halt Indian supply lines. While striking a bridge, they meet Virlomi, who defects to their side, with the aid of Beans soldiers and Lockes distinguished connections, they move on Hyderabad, where Bean rescues Petra. Furthermore, Locke publishes an essay detailing the Chinese betrayal just as it is happening, wyatt and Raj, The Making and Unmaking of British India by Lawrence James. In addition to two books he was also inspired by Phillip Absher, who was one of the readers of the first draft. Phillip suggested that the Petra arc of the novel was anti-climactic, upon hearing this criticism, Card rethought this entire book and decided to split it into two books. Shadow Puppets is a science fiction novel by American author Orson Scott Card, published in 2002. It is the sequel to Shadow of the Hegemon and the book in the Enders Shadow series. It was originally to be called Shadow of Death, Peter, Enders brother, is now Hegemon of Earth. Achilles is known to anyone who has seen him vulnerable. Bean and his friend Petra, who served under Ender. Bean believes Peter has seriously underestimated Achilles, and that he is not safe unless he is hidden, during their travels, Petra convinces Bean to marry her and have children with her by taking him to Anton, the person who Antons Key was named after. Bean is reluctant to have children, as he not want his Antons Key gene to be passed on. He finds Volescu, the doctor who activated the key in his genes. Volescu pretends to identify three embryos with Antons Key and they are discarded, one of the remaining six is implanted into Petra, while the rest of them are placed under guard. At the same time, a message is passed to Bean that Han Tzu, realizing that it had been a setup, Bean gets a message to Peters parents, and they flee with Peter from the Hegemons compound. Bean narrowly escapes an assassination attempt himself, and escapes to Damascus, there they find that another Battle School comrade, Alai, is the unrivaled Caliph of a nearly unified Muslim world. Meanwhile, their embryos are stolen, and Bean expects Achilles to use them to bait a trap for them, shortly after they arrive, however, a message is sent betraying their presence. Faking their departure from the station, Peter and his parents discover the traitor. The unmanned shuttle sent as a decoy is shot down over Brazil, in the previous novel, China had conquered India and Indochina. Alai plans to them by invading first China, and then India. Left with nowhere to turn, Achilles contacts Bean and offers the embryos in exchange for safe passage, Bean and Peter return to the Hegemons compound. Achilles expects Bean to be so besotted with the idea of retrieving his children that he can be killed with a bomb in the container for them. When Bean sees through that trap, Achilles offers up fake embryos in petri dishes, however, Bean has already decided that Achilles was faking and refuses to fall for any of his traps

A belief is spreading in conquered China that the government has lost the Mandate of Heaven, Han Tzu meets up with Mazer Rackham, who passes him a blow dart pen, calling it the Mandate of Heaven. Han Tzu confronts the emperor, Snow Tiger, who is shot and killed by a guard, allowing Han Tzu to overthrow the Chinese government, meanwhile, Peter Wiggin, Hegemon of Earth, along with Petra Arkanian, goes to visit Alai, Caliph of the Muslim League. The two help Alai realize that he is more than a glorified prisoner, and that others have been ruling Islam in his stead. After uncovering a conspiracy against him, Alai resolves to take control of his nation. The rest of the deals with Peter Wiggin working to create a world government free of war through his Free People of Earth alliance. Caliph Alai of the Muslim League and Virlomi, now the virtual goddess of India, against this backdrop of world political machinations by the former Battle School children is the extremely personal story of Julian Delphiki. Antons Key is making him grow at a rate and he has only a short time before his body will become too large for his heart to support. He searches frantically for his and Petras missing children, graff assists them in locating the surrogate mothers of their children. The FPE alliance begins with only twenty-two countries, among them Brazil, Rwanda, the first test of the FPE comes when they recognize the sovereignty and nationhood of the Nubian, Quechua, and Aymara peoples, ethnic minorities that are politically part of other nations. The FPEs victories, and especially their militarily brilliant commanders, bolster support for the FPE, meanwhile, Bean suspects that Peter is embezzling Enders military pension to fund the FPE, so he requests that Enders funds be placed under the control of an autonomous computer. The Mind Game also speeds the search for Beans missing children, allowing the International Fleet to find eight of them, two of whom have Antons Key turned, as does the baby Petra is carrying. The ninth remains undetected, as Achilles had it implanted into a woman named Randi, brainwashed to think that it is the baby of Achilles, whom she worships as a hero assassinated by foul enemies. To avoid persecution, Randi determines to leave Earth and live in a colony and her story, and that of her child Randall Firth, is concluded in Cards later novel Ender in Exile. Virlomi attempts to guarantee Indias freedom via dynastic marriage, turning down an offer from Han Tzu to instead attempt to seduce Peter Wiggin, when Peter turns her down, she turns to Alai whom she finds easier to outmaneuver. In this way, all the Battle School grads are convinced to take up Graffs offer to travel the stars, realizing that their presence on Earth guarantees continued, even Virlomi agrees, after Suri manages to snap her out of her growing megalomania. Beans departure breaks Petras heart, but she becomes Peters military commander, eventually marrying and having five children with him, by the end of the novel, all of the worlds nations, except the United States, have joined the FPE. Peter reconciles with Ender via ansible, giving the Speaker for the Dead all he needs to write The Hegemon, Petra reads his biography at his grave, thinking of him as the man who truly changed her life

Shadows in Flight is a science fiction novel by Orson Scott Card. When released in 2012, it became the novel published in the Enders Game series. The story follows on from where the original four Shadow series books left off and it is about Bean and his children discovering an ancient Formic ark during their journey in space. A sample chapter was released on November 28,2011, the hardcover version was released on January 17,2012, and the paperback was released on January 29,2013. It was nominated for the Goodreads Choice Award for science fiction, in 2210, the starship Herodotus left Earth. On board were Julian Bean Delphiki and his three infant children – Ender, Carlotta, and Cincinnatus – all of whom have Antons Key turned. This genetic alteration, which Bean passed to his children, grants them all extremely high intelligence, but causes their bodies to grow uncontrollably, which is likely to kill them by the age of 20. Subjectively, they have been flying near light-speed for five years, when the family left, scientists were actively trying to find a cure for their giantism which would not diminish their intelligence. Several generations have passed, they have forgotten, and their mother. The children have only been alive for six subjective years, Beans life has been extended by the low gravity on board the Herodotus, which allows his heart to keep beating despite his increasingly gigantic size. At 4.5 metres tall, Bean must remain in a position in the cargo bay so as not to over-exert himself. He controls and watches everything on the ship through his holo-top terminal, Bean and Ender continue to study their genetic condition in the hope of finding a cure. In one of these meetings, the militarily-minded Cincinnatus tries to enlist the aid of his siblings in killing their father, saying he is a drain on resources. The sensitive Carlotta is unwilling to take a stance, but Ender punches Sergeant and breaks his nose for proposing such an idea, thus ending his brothers domination over the family. Ender and Carlotta tell Bean about Sergeants plans, and Bean puts all three children in their place, reminding them they are each as intelligent as the other. Sergeant has been imagining threats to their security where there are none, so he studies the Formic war vids and learning his fathers strategy while training himself with weaponry. Ender takes on the bulk of the studies by monitoring the advances made by the scientists on Earth. Carlotta, who feels slightly left behind with the genetic studies serves the family by taking care of every aspect of the spacecraft, Bean and his children deliberate courses of action
