Basketball

Basketball is a non-contact team sport played on a rectangular court by two teams of five players each. The objective is to shoot a ball through a hoop 18 inches in diameter and 10 feet high that is mounted to a backboard at each end of the court. The game was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, a team can score a field goal by shooting the ball through the basket being defended by the opposition team during regular play. A field goal scores three points for the team if the player shoots from behind the three-point line. A team can also score via free throws, which are worth one point, the team with the most points at the end of the game wins, but additional time is mandated when the score is tied at the end of regulation. The ball can be advanced on the court by passing it to a teammate and it is a violation to lift, or drag, ones pivot foot without dribbling the ball, to carry it, or to hold the ball with both hands then resume dribbling. The game has many techniques for displaying skill—ball-handling, shooting, passing, dribbling, dunking, shot-blocking. The point guard directs the on court action of the team, implementing the coachs game plan, Basketball is one of the worlds most popular and widely viewed sports. Outside North America, the top clubs from national leagues qualify to continental championships such as the Euroleague, the FIBA Basketball World Cup attracts the top national teams from around the world. Each continent hosts regional competitions for teams, like EuroBasket. The FIBA Womens Basketball World Cup features the top womens basketball teams from continental championships. The main North American league is the WNBA, whereas the EuroLeague Women has been dominated by teams from the Russian Womens Basketball Premier League, in early December 1891, Canadian Dr. He sought a vigorous indoor game to keep his students occupied, after rejecting other ideas as either too rough or poorly suited to walled-in gymnasiums, he wrote the basic rules and nailed a peach basket onto a 10-foot elevated track. Basketball was originally played with a soccer ball and these laces could cause bounce passes and dribbling to be unpredictable. Eventually a lace-free ball construction method was invented, and this change to the game was endorsed by Naismith, dribbling was not part of the original game except for the bounce pass to teammates. Passing the ball was the means of ball movement. Dribbling was eventually introduced but limited by the shape of early balls. Dribbling only became a part of the game around the 1950s

Texas Longhorns men's basketball

The Texas Longhorns mens basketball team represents The University of Texas at Austin in NCAA Division I intercollegiate mens basketball competition. The Longhorns currently compete in the Big 12 Conference, the University of Texas began varsity intercollegiate competition in mens basketball in 1906. Among Big 12 Conference mens basketball programs, Texas is second only to Kansas in both wins and all-time win percentage. The Texas basketball program experienced substantial success during the decades of its existence. Since 1977, the team has played its games in the Frank Erwin Special Events Center. The team is led by second-year head coach Shaka Smart. Mainland had been a nationally known basketball player as a student at Wheaton College prior to coming to UT. His Wheaton team placed out of the three competing college basketball teams in the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, the first Olympic Games featuring the young sport. The Longhorns took the court for the first time on March 10,1906, Texas traveled to Waco two weeks later for a three-game series with the Bears and won all three games behind the play of Mainland. The Longhorns ultimately won seven of the eight games scheduled in the programs inaugural season. Due to inadequate funding, the UT Athletic Council canceled the program after two seasons, leaving Texas without a basketball team for the 1908 season. The Athletics Council revived the program in 1909, owing in part to the efforts of Longhorn player Morgan Vining. Metzenthin finished with an record of 13–14, not until 1959 would another UT basketball coach leave with a losing overall record. Taylor, also the Texas track coach, assumed head coaching responsibilities for the 1913 season. Taylor came to UT with a reputation for basketball expertise. At the conclusion of the 1912–13 academic year, the UTs Cactus yearbook declared and it always has been so considered until this year Prof. Carl Taylor took charge of the work and infused new life into it, L. Bellmonts teams contributed 25 victories to a winning streak that would ultimately grow to 44 games. Big 12 Conference

The Big 12 Conference is a ten-school collegiate athletic conference headquartered in Irving, Texas. Its ten members, located in Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, additionally, the Big 12 has ten affiliate members, six for the sport of wrestling, one for womens gymnastics, and 3 for womens rowing. The Big 12 Conference is a 501 nonprofit organization incorporated in Delaware, the Big 12 was formerly composed of 12 schools, hence its name, it was formed in 1996 when four schools from the collapsing Southwest Conference joined with the pre-existing Big Eight Conference. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State were grouped with the four newcomers in the Big 12 South, TCU and West Virginia joined from the Mountain West and Big East Conferences respectively to offset two of the departing schools, bringing the conference to its current strength. Attempts to rename the Big 12 to reflect its current strength would lead to confusion with the current Big Ten Conference, the Big 12 Conference commissioner is Bob Bowlsby. Full members Assoc. member Other Conference The Big 12 Conference sponsors championship competition in ten mens, nonetheless, it is an open coed sport in NCAA college athletics, with mens, womens, and coed teams in all NCAA divisions competing against each other. TCU and West Virginia both field coed teams, through 2017, West Virginia with 19 national titles and TCU with two, together have won over half of the NCAA titles awarded since the inaugural NCAA championship in 1980. West Virginia also won four national titles. The Big 12 began athletic play in the fall of 1996, from its formation until 2011, its 12 members competed in two divisions. Between 2011 and 2012 four charter members left the conference while two joined in 2013. The Big 12 is unique among the current Power Five conferences in that it only has 10 members, despite the name, causing some confusion. From 1987 to 2015,12 or more members were required for a championship game. Former Texas Athletic Director DeLoss Dodds and former football coach Mack Brown, along with Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops, critics argued it was a competitive advantage over other contract conferences. Conferences with a game have their division champions typically play one of their toughest games of the year in the last week of the regular season. Unlike the other Power 5 conferences in which a team plays a portion of the other teams in the conference each season. This theoretically allows for the declaration of a de facto champion without the need for a rematch between the top two teams in the conference. On June 3,2016, the conference announced it would reinstate the football game in the 2017 season. This followed the passage of a new NCAA rule allowing all FBS conferences to hold football championship games regardless of their membership numbers, the Big 12 population base is centered on the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, West Virginia and Iowa

North Kingstown is a town in Washington County, Rhode Island, United States, and is part of the Providence metropolitan area. As of the United States Estimated Population 2013, the population was 35,320 making it the 13th largest municipality in the state, North Kingstown is home to the birthplace of the famous American portraitist Gilbert Stuart who was born in the village of Saunderstown. The town of Kings Towne was founded in 1674, by the government, and included the present day towns of North Kingstown, South Kingstown, Exeter. In 1722, Kings Towne was split into two parts, North Kingstown and South Kingstown, with North Kingstown, having the earliest settlements, in 1742 the town of Exeter was taken from the western part of North Kingstown. Kenyon College

Kenyon College is a private liberal arts college in Gambier, Ohio, United States, founded in 1824 by Philander Chase. Kenyon College is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges, the acceptance rate for the Class of 2019 was 23. 8%, the most selective year to date. After becoming the first Episcopal Bishop of Ohio in 1818, Philander Chase found a lack of trained clergy on the Ohio frontier. He planned to create a seminary to rectify this problem, undeterred, he sailed to England and solicited donations from Lord Kenyon, Lord Gambier, and the writer and philanthropist Hannah More, and the College was incorporated in December,1824. Dissatisfied with the location of the College in Worthington, Chase purchased 8,000 acres of land in Knox County. There is a legend that Bishop Chase exclaimed, Well, this will do upon reaching the crest of the hill, Kenyon requires students to take classes in each of the four academic divisions, Fine Arts, Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. In addition, students must show a basic competence in a foreign language, the Gund Gallery, a 31,000 square feet visual arts center and exhibition space, was founded in 2011. It hosts lectures, public programming and temporary exhibitions that are free, Kenyon is also home to the Beta of Ohio Chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. Kenyons sports teams, which compete in the North Coast Athletic Conference, are referred to as the Lords and Ladies, and their colors are purple, white, and black with gold often added as an accent. The colleges mens swimming team is notable in NCAA Division III, for winning, the womens swimming team is also considered among the best, winning 23 titles of its own since 1984. Former Swim Coach Jim Steen has coached the most conference titles in any sport in NCAA history, in 2013, under Head Coach Jess Book, the mens team won the national title and the womens team took second. Field hockey, football and mens lacrosse are played at McBride Field which has a capacity of 1,762. In the 2017 U. S. News & World Report rankings, forbes magazine in 2016 ranked Kenyon 48th overall, and 7th in the Midwest, out of the 650 colleges and universities on its list of Americas Best Colleges. In 2006 Newsweek selected Kenyon College as one of twenty-five New Ivies on the basis of admissions statistics as well as interviews with administrators, students, faculty and it was also listed in Greenes list of Hidden Ivies in 2000. Kenyons campus also garners acclaim for its beauty, for example, for the class of 2019, Kenyon received 7,077 applications and accepted 1,689. The number enrolling for the class of 2018 was 452 making the yield rate 27. 2%, in terms of class rank, 62% of enrolled freshmen were in the top 10% of their high school classes. Point guard
–
The point guard, also called the one or point, is one of the five positions in a regulation basketball game. A point guard has perhaps the most specialized role of any position, point guards are expected to run the teams offense by controlling the ball and making sure that it gets to the right players at the right time. A point guard, like other player positions in basketball, specializes in certain skills, a point guards primary job is to facilitate scoring opportunities for his/her team, or sometimes for themselves. Lee Rose has described a point guard as a coach on the floor and this involves setting up plays on the court, getting the ball to the teammate in the best position to score, and controlling the tempo of the game. A point guard should know when and how to instigate a fast break, point guards are expected to be vocal floor leaders. A point guard needs always to have in mind the times on the clock and the game clock, the score. Among the taller players who have enjoyed success at the position is Magic Johnson, other point guards who have been named NBA MVP include Bob Cousy, Oscar Robertson, Derrick Rose and two-time winners Stephen Curry and Steve Nash. In the NBA, point guards are usually about 65 or shorter, having above-average size is considered advantageous, although size is secondary to situational awareness, speed, quickness, and ball handling skills. Shorter players tend to be better dribblers since they are closer to the floor, after an opponent scores, it is typically the point guard who brings the ball down court to begin an offensive play. Passing skills, ball handling, and court vision are crucial, speed is important, a speedy point guard is better able to create separation and space off the dribble, giving him/herself room to work. Point guards are often valued more for their assist totals than for their scoring, another major evaluation factor is Assist-to-Turnover ratio, which reflects the decision-making skills of the player. Still, a point guard should also have a reasonably effective jump shot. The point guard is positioned on the perimeter of the play and this is a necessity because of the point guards many leadership obligations. Many times, the point guard is referred to by announcers as a coach on the floor or a floor general, in the past, this was particularly true, as several point guards such as Lenny Wilkens served their teams as player-coaches. This is not so common anymore, as most coaches are now solely specialized in coaching and are non-players, former Suns head coach Mike DAntoni had often allowed Steve Nash to freelance when leading the Suns offense, even letting him call his own plays at times. Even point guards who are not given this much freedom, however, are extensions of their coach on the floor. John Stockton is widely considered to be the point guard. He also used the pick and roll maneuvre with Karl Malone, along with leadership and a general basketball acumen, ball-handling is a skill of great importance to a point guard

The California Vulcans are the intercollegiate sports teams and players that represent California University of Pennsylvania. The Vulcans participate in the NCAA Division II in all sports, the school colors are Red and Black. The mascot of California is Blaze the Vulcan, the Vulcan Football Team won the Division II PSAC West Championship in 2005,2006,2007 and 2008. In 2008 California won the recently resurrected PSAC Championship game, claiming the conference title, California won back-to-back Northeast Regional Championships in 2007 and 2008. In 2007, under Head Coach John Luckhardt, California achieved a 13–1 record, the schools Mens & Womens basketball teams have been a high point as well, with both teams advancing to the PSAC Final Four on March 6,2008. In 2009, both Cal Us Womens Volleyball and Womens Soccer teams advanced to the NCAA-DII Elite Eight round of the playoffs before being eliminated from contention. Californias football team stumbled early in the season, dropping three games early in the season before marching into the PSAC Championship game vs, Shippensburg defeated the Vulcans for the title of PSAC Champions. Despite the loss, the Vulcans earned a playoff berth, the Vulcans defeated Fayetteville State University, returned to avenge the PSAC Championship loss against Shippensburg, and defeated the first ranked offense of West Liberty University. However, the Vulcans improbable run ended for the third season in the semi-final round, as the Vulcans were shut down by Northwest Missouri State University. Many of Californias athletic events are covered by the Universitys television and radio stations, CUTV, in some instances, CUTV has provided video for CBS College Sports Network and PCN. ] Vulcan football games used to be broadcast by Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh, CUTV now covers all Vulcan Football and Basketball games home and away. The National Semifinal rounds were broadcast worldwide in 2007 on ESPNU, Cal U appeared again on national television in 2009 for the National Semifinal round of the football playoffs on CBS College Sports Network. Adamson Stadium Adamson Stadium is the Universitys home for the football, CONSOL Energy Park boasts seating for 3,500, team dugouts, locker rooms, full press box, bullpens, concession stands, restrooms, abundant parking and a family play area with arcade games and rides. The arena is the home of the California Vulcans men and womens basketball and volleyball teams, the Convocation Center is able to host other sporting events, concerts, and trade shows, featuring a removable hardwood surface. The building, covering over 142,000 sq. feet, is the largest indoor venue between Morgantown, West Virginia, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Cal U Convocation Center is also home to the Rivers Bend Conference Center, which features executive-level conferencing facilities. Upon installation, the arena will be the first in the area to house a Wavecam unit, lilly Field features a fully enclosed field, skinned infield, permanent and temporary seating for 300, team dugouts, warm-up bullpen areas and a concession stand. The arena will be home of the California Vulcans volleyball, mens, the building will also be able to host other sporting events, concerts, and trade shows. Akron Zips men's basketball

The Akron Zips mens basketball team represents the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. The team currently competes in the Mid-American Conference East division, the team first played in the NCAA Tournament in 1986 when Bob Huggins was their coach. The Zips are currently coached by Keith Dambrot, who has coached them since the 2004–05 season, the Zips won their first MAC East division title in 1998. In 2006, the Zips received an invitation to the NIT, in 2007, the team won their second MAC East title and tied the school record for wins in a season in the Division I era with 26. They also made their appearance in the MAC Tournament Championship game. The loss cost them the MACs automatic berth and they were not selected for either the 2007 NCAA Tournament or NIT. The Zips posted a 24–11 record in 2008 which included an appearance in the MAC tournament championship game. In 2008 the Zips officially announced they had signed a partnership to be outfitted by the LeBron James line by Nike. They are now the team with a LJ23/Nike contract. Nike has released several Zips themed versions of LeBrons shoes, some are available to the public, while others are exclusively for the members of the basketball team. The team was established in 1901, when the school was known as Buchtel College, playing their first game against Mount Union College. The team played just four games in the 1901–1902 season, winning their final two against the Western Reserve College medical school, the teams first three seasons were spent without the benefit of a head coach. This changed with the arrival of the first head coach, Earl Williams, the Zips began play in the Ohio Athletic Conference in 1923 where they would compete from 1923–1965 except for 1936–1944 when the University left the OAC and competed as an independent. In the OAC, Akron would win 8 conference titles and five tournament titles, after the 1965–1966 season Akron left the OAC for good and competed as an independent in the NCAAs College Division, which would later be renamed Division II. When the NCAA divided into three divisions in 1973, the Zips would play one season in Division III before moving to Division II, where they would play from 1975–1980. The Zips participated in the NCAA Division II tournament on seven different occasions, coach Laterza’s winning percentage at UA of.751 remains best in the history of the program. Akron would play one season in the OVC and earn a berth in the 1987 National Invitation Tournament before another stint as an independent from 1987–1990. Huggins would lead the Zips to the 1989 NIT before leaving Akron after the season to coach at Cincinnati, Akron would rejoin the Mid-Continent Conference in 1990 and compete for two seasons before officially beginning play in the Mid-American Conference in 1992

Clemson Tigers men's basketball

The Clemson Tigers mens basketball team is a college basketball program that represents Clemson University and competes in the NCAA Division I. Clemson is a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Clemson sponsored its first mens team in the 1911–12 season, winning its first conference championship in 1939. The Clemson basketball programs have won roughly 75% of their games played in Littlejohn, Clemsons current head coach is Brad Brownell. Clemsons basketball history had an unusual beginning, the Tigers first two basketball games were both played in Greenville, South Carolina on February 9,1912, a 46-12 win at Furman, followed by a 78-6 victory over the Butler Guards later that evening. Clemson won its first seven games in the history, the longest streak to open a program among the current 15 ACC schools. Former Pittsburgh Nationals player Frank Dobson was Clemsons first basketball coach, Southern Conference, The Tigers began play in the Southern Conference in 1921, and in 1922–23 had an 11-6 finish. Josh Cody, coached for five seasons, the longest tenure for a Clemson Basketball coach in the first 25 years, in 1928–29 the Tigers won 15 games, a school record, and then followed that with a 16-9 mark. Cody pulled off the first huge upset in Clemson basketball history when the Tigers defeated Adolph Rupps 10-1 Kentucky Wildcats, 29-26, from 1931–40, Joe Davis coached Clemson to 101 victories, including 44 wins on the road. Davis still has the best winning percentage in Clemson history on the road, in the 1938–39 season, the Tigers won 10 of their last 11 games to close the regular season. Banks McFadden, eventual All-American in both football and basketball averaged 11.8 points per game to lead the team as the pivot to four victories. It was a run in the tournament as Clemson beat North Carolina, 44-43, Wake Forest, 30-28, Davidson 49-33. McFaddens best year as coach was the 1951–52 season when the Tigers were 17-7 overall, in 1953, Clemson became a founding member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. In the 1954–55 season, Bill Yarborough averaged 28.3 points per game, 4th best in the nation, Press Maravich, father of basketball legend Pete Maravich, coached the Tigers to a 96-94 double overtime victory against a #8 NC State team. In 1963–64, coach Bobby Roberts guided the Tigers to an 8-6 record in the ACC, the season included the only regular season sweep of North Carolina in school history. Roberts beat the Tar Heels and Dean Smith, 66-64, in overtime at Clemson to open the season. Clemson won seven straight ACC games including wins over Wake Forest, #14 Duke, North Carolina State. It was the first sweep of the North Carolina ACC schools in ACC history, Clemson finished with a 17-8 record and 9-5 record in the ACC

Florida Gators men's basketball

The Florida Gators mens basketball team represents the University of Florida in the sport of basketball. The Gators compete in NCAA Division I and the Southeastern Conference and they play their home games in the Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. OConnell Center on the universitys Gainesville, Florida campus, and are led by head coach Mike White, the Florida Gators mens team annually plays an eighteen-game conference schedule that is preceded by an out-of-conference schedule that includes an annual game against in-state rival Florida State. Their conference schedule consists of a pair of games against five SEC teams. Historically, the Gators did not have significant rivals in mens basketball, since the late 1980s, however, Florida has built rivalries with Kentucky and Tennessee as the Gators have become consistent contenders for the Southeastern Conference championship. The modern University of Florida was created in 1905, when the Florida Legislature passed the Buckman Act, the first Gators basketball team compiled a 5–1 record, but the following three seasons were canceled during and immediately after World War I. The team was restarted for the 1919–20 season without a professional coach, head coach William G. Kline, who also coached the Florida Gators football team, led the Gators basketball team from 1920 to 1922. By the mid-1920s the team outgrew the University Gymnasium, so the university built another gym to hold the crowds of the student population. Dubbed the New Gym, the Gators played there until 1949, in December 1932, the University of Florida joined the Southeastern Conference as one of its thirteen charter members. The Gators spent most of the first half-century of SEC play in the half of the standings. They only finished higher than fourth twice between 1932–33 and 1979–80, cody had previously coached the Clemson and Vanderbilt basketball teams, Maurer had previously coached the Kentucky and Tennessee basketball squads. None of them were able to build the Gators into consistent contenders in conference play, in hopes of breathing life into the program, Florida hired Norm Sloan as its first full-time head coach for the 1960–61 season. He compiled a record of 85–63 in six seasons, including the Gators first two wins over long-dominant Kentucky in SEC play, sloans Gators did not receive a postseason tournament invitation during his tenure, however, until 1975 only the conference champion was guaranteed an NCAA bid. Nonetheless, according to Florida historian Norm Carlson, Sloan elevated the Gators basketball program from an intramural program, Sloan left Florida for his alma mater, North Carolina State, after the 1965-66 season. Tommy Bartlett succeeded Sloan as head coach in 1966–67 and his Gators experienced initial success during his first three seasons, finishing second, fifth and third respectively in SEC play. His first team notched the schools first 20-win season, a sweep by Tennessee left them one game short of their first SEC title. Led by center Neal Walk and forward Andy Owens, the received a bid to the 1969 National Invitation Tournament—the first postseason tournament invitation in team history. Bartlett could not sustain the level of talent in recruiting, john Lotz, a respected assistant under North Carolinas Dean Smith, succeeded Bartlett in 1973–74

VCU Rams men's basketball

The VCU Rams mens basketball team is the intercollegiate mens basketball program that represents Virginia Commonwealth University. The Rams joined the Atlantic 10 Conference in the 2012–13 season after competing in the Colonial Athletic Association. In 2017, VCU was ranked the 40th most valuable mens basketball program in the country by the Wall Street Journal, with a valuation of $56.9 million dollars, VCU ranks second in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and second in the A10 Conference. The team is coached by Mike Rhoades, since 1999, the team has played home basketball games at the E. J. Wade Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center in Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth has made it to the NCAA Final Four once in its programs history, in 2011. The Rams have also won ten regular season championships, four from the Sun Belt, five from the CAA, the official student supporter group is known as the Rowdy Rams. The team is known for its Final Four run in the 2011 NCAA Division I Mens Basketball Tournament. While the team had made nine NCAA Tournament appearances beforehand, never had the Rams made it beyond the round of the tournament. In 2011, the Rams journey to the Final Four began in one of the four opening games, commonly called play-in games. Thus, VCU became the first team to advance from the First Four to the Final Four, the VCU Rams mens basketball program was founded in 1968, at the same time as the merger of the Richmond Professional Institute and the Medical College of Virginia. In the 1968–69 season as an independent team, the program played its first ever season, coached by Benny Dees and assisted by Landy Watson and Vann Brackin for their first two seasons, Dees led the team to two winning records, before being replaced by Chuck Noe. Under the coaching of J. D. Barnett, the Rams earned fourth berths into the NCAA Mens Division I Basketball Championship, each being their first four berths, during Barnetts six years coaching the team, only twice did the Rams not win the Sun Belt Conference. The Rams became the first team to sweep the best of 3 championship series in the CBI post-season tournament on their way to becoming the 2010 CBI Champions and it is the first post-season tournament championship, excluding conference tournaments, in the history of the program. They entered the tournament as a #12 seed in the East Region and were eliminated in the first round by #5 Iowa and it would not be long before the Rams returned to the tournament. The following year the Rams posted a 24–5 record on their way to the Sun Belt Conference regular season, the Rams entered the tournament as the #5 seed in the East region and defeated #12 Long Island before being eliminated by #4 Tennessee in overtime in the second round 56–58. The Rams would return to the tournament in 1983, the Rams, the #5 seed in the East region, defeated #12 seed La Salle in the first round and were eliminated in the second round by #4 seed Georgia 54–56. The Dayton Flyers mens basketball team is a college basketball program that competes in NCAA Division I and the Atlantic 10 Conference representing the University of Dayton in Ohio. The Flyers play their games at University of Dayton Arena. Dayton is one of the 50 winningest Division I college basketball programs, a 2015 study of college basketball team valuations placed Dayton #23 in the nation with 2014 adjusted revenues in excess of $16.6 million and a valuation of nearly $84 million. The first collegiate basketball team play at Dayton, then known as St. Marys Institute. Early rivalries with Notre Dame and Miami began in the 1908–09 season, william OMalley is recognized as the first coach of the Saints, but the team had no coach for the first six seasons. Harry Solimano, believed to be a former Saints player, succeeded OMalley in the 1910 season and coached the four seasons. In 1920 the school changed its name to the University of Dayton, also in 1920, the school began playing nearby Xavier University, a rivalry that has spawned 156 meetings as of 2014. Games were originally played in a gymnasium, but later moved to the nearby University of Dayton Arena. Harry Baujan became both the football and basketball coach in 1923 and later became the athletic director. Through the 1920s and 1930s, the program was subordinate to the football program with respect to resources. In 1939, Baujan hired James Carter as both an assistant football coach and head basketball coach, Carter moved to expand Daytons national profile by issuing basketball scholarships and scheduling trips to east coast basketball powers such as St Johns and St Josephs. Carter is also recognized as the first Dayton coach to play an African American student-athlete, world War II brought a two-year hiatus to the basketball program between 1943 and 1945. In 1947, Tom Blackburn succeeded Carter as the schools first full-time head basketball coach, Blackburn would recruit future NBA player Don Meineke, along with local standouts Junior Norris & Chuck Grigsby in 1948 to form the nucleus of the schools first nationally recognized teams. The 1950–51 Flyers reached #13 in the AP Poll and the finals of the NIT before bowing out to Brigham Young, the following year, the Flyers also reached the NIT Finals, while also participating in the NCAA Tournament for the first time, finishing in the regional semi-final. In light of the growing national stature and increasing fan base. The foundation established by Blackburn led to Dayton being the most successful Division I basketball program through the 1950s and 1960s, Tom Blackburn became ill with terminal lung cancer during the 1963–64 season. Don Donoher, a former Dayton player and assistant coach took over for the three games of the 1963–64 season. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is a non-profit association which regulates athletes of 1,281 institutions, conferences, organizations, and individuals. It also organizes the programs of many colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. The organization is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 2014, the NCAA generated almost a billion dollars in revenue. 80 to 90% of this revenue was due to the Division I Mens Basketball Tournament and this revenue is then distributed back into various organizations and institutions across the United States. In August 1973, the current three-division setup of Division I, Division II, under NCAA rules, Division I and Division II schools can offer scholarships to athletes for playing a sport. Division III schools may not offer any athletic scholarships, generally, larger schools compete in Division I and smaller schools in II and III. Division I football was divided into I-A and I-AA in 1978. Subsequently, the term Division I-AAA was briefly added to delineate Division I schools which do not field a football program at all, in 2006, Divisions I-A and I-AA were respectively renamed the Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision. Inter-collegiate sports began in the US in 1852 when crews from Harvard University, as other sports emerged, notably football and basketball, many of these same concepts and standards were adopted. Football, in particular, began to emerge as a marquee sport, the IAAUS was officially established on March 31,1906, and took its present name, the NCAA, in 1910. For several years, the NCAA was a group and rules-making body, but in 1921, the first NCAA national championship was conducted. Gradually, more rules committees were formed and more championships were created, a series of crises brought the NCAA to a crossroads after World War II. The Sanity Code – adopted to establish guidelines for recruiting and financial aid – failed to curb abuses, postseason football games were multiplying with little control, and member schools were increasingly concerned about how the new medium of television would affect football attendance. The complexity of problems and the growth in membership and championships demonstrated the need for full-time professional leadership. Walter Byers, previously an executive assistant, was named executive director in 1951. Byers wasted no time placing his stamp on the Association, as college athletics grew, the scope of the nations athletics programs diverged, forcing the NCAA to create a structure that recognized varying levels of emphasis. In 1973, the Associations membership was divided into three legislative and competitive divisions – I, II, and III, five years later in 1978, Division I members voted to create subdivisions I-A and I-AA in football. The College Basketball Invitational is a mens college basketball tournament created in 2007 by The Gazelle Group. The inaugural tournament occurred after the conclusion of the 2007–08 mens college basketball regular season, the CBI selects 16 teams that are not selected for the NCAA Tournament or the National Invitation Tournament, and who are willing to pay a $50,000 entry fee to participate. In the CBI, teams compete on home courts, the CBI is a single elimination tournament until the final two teams are determined, after which the championship is determined by a championship series with a best-two-out-of-three format. The 2008 College Basketball Invitational was the first new postseason tournament since the Collegiate Commissioners Association Tournament in 1974, the opening round was played on March 18,2008, and March 19,2008, with the second round being played on March 24,2008. The semifinals took place on March 26,2008, the championship was a best-of-three series with games being played on March 31, April 2, and April 4,2008. The bracketing was done in east, west, south and midwest regions, tulsa was crowned the champion in the 2008 tournament. On February 1,2016, the CBI announced a television partnership with ESPN to broadcast the Championship Series of the CBI. In the inaugural year, games were available in markets on Fox Sports Net. The games could also be viewed on the official website, the 2009 tournament broadcast was changed to HDNet with four first round games, two quarterfinal games, both semifinal games, and all three championship games being broadcast. HDNet changed its named to AXS and aired the 2013 tournament, CBS Sports Network televised the 2014 and 2015 tournaments. The 2011 NCAA Division I Mens Basketball Tournament was a single-elimination tournament involving 68 teams to determine the national champion of the 2010–11 NCAA Division I mens basketball season. The 73rd edition of the NCAA Tournament began on March 15,2011 and this tournament marked the introduction of the First Four round and an expansion of the field of participants from 65 teams to 68. The South and Midwest regional games were replaced by the monikers Southeast and Southwest for this tournament, due to the location of New Orleans and San Antonio. The Final Four featured no top seeds for the first time since 2006, with the highest remaining seed being West Region winner, #3 Connecticut. For the first time since 2000, a #8 seed advanced to the Final Four as Butler, for only the third time ever, a #11 seed advanced to the Final Four as Virginia Commonwealth, one of the First Four teams, won the Southwest Region. Those three teams were joined by East Region champion Kentucky, a #4 seed, Connecticut won its third national championship in the championship game by defeating Butler 53-41. The East Region saw its #11 seed, Marquette, advance to the Sweet Sixteen where they were downed by North Carolina. The Southwest Region saw four of its double digit seeds win, as VCU was joined by #12 seed and citymate Richmond, #10 seed Florida State, and #13 seed Morehead State as first round winners. Florida State, VCU, and Richmond all advanced to the Sweet Sixteen from that region, Butler and #11 seed Gonzaga advanced from the Southeast Region, with Gonzaga losing in the Round of 32 to BYU. For the third time in as many appearances, Vanderbilt suffered a defeat to a double digit seed and this time, they were defeated by Richmond as a #5 seed. The Big East had a record eleven teams make the tournament, due to having more than eight teams qualify, it was possible for intra-Big East matchups to occur in the third round. Two of these matchups did occur as Marquette defeated Syracuse in the East while Connecticut defeated Cincinnati in the West and this is a list of qualifying teams for the 2011 NCAA Division I Mens Basketball Tournament. A total of 68 teams entered the tournament, thirty of the teams earned automatic bids by winning their conference tournaments. The automatic bid of the Ivy League, which does not conduct a tournament, went to its regular season champion. The remaining 37 teams were granted at-large bids, which are extended by the NCAA Selection Committee, All teams are seeded 1 to 16 within their regionals, while the Selection Committee seeded the entire field from 1 to 68. The history of basketball is traced back to a YMCA International Training School, known today as Springfield College, located in Springfield, Massachusetts. The date of the first formal basketball game played at the Springfield YMCA Training School under Naismiths rules is generally given as December 21,1891, Basketball began to spread to college campuses by 1893. Governing bodies in Canada include U Sports and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association, each of these various organizations are subdivided into from one to three divisions based on the number and level of scholarships that may be provided to the athletes. The first basketball games in the United States were played at YMCAs in 1891 and 1892, by 1893, the game was being played on college campuses. The original rules for basketball were very different from todays modern rules of the sport, in the beginning James Naismith established 13 original rules, The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands. The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands, but never with the fist, a player cannot run with the ball. The player must throw it from the spot on which he catches it, the ball must be held by the hands. The arms or body must not be used for holding it, no shouldering, holding, pushing, striking, or tripping in any way of an opponent is allowed. A foul will be called when a player is seen striking at the ball with the fist, or when violations of rules 3 and 4, if either side makes three consecutive fouls it shall count as a goal for the opponents. A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from the grounds into the basket and stays there, if the ball rests on the edges, and the opponent moves the basket, it shall count as a goal. When the ball out of bounds, it shall be thrown into the field. In case of dispute the umpire shall throw it straight into the field, the thrower-in is allowed five seconds. If he holds it longer, it shall go to the opponent, if any side persists in delaying the game, the umpire shall call a foul on them. The umpire shall be the judge of the men and shall note the fouls and he shall have power to disqualify men according to rule 5. The referee shall be judge of the ball and shall decide when the ball is in play, in bounds, to side it belongs. He shall decide when a goal has been made and keep account of the goals, the time shall be two fifteen-minute halves, with five minutes rest between. The North Coast Athletic Conference is an NCAA Division III athletic conference composed of colleges located in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania. When founded in 1984, the league was a pioneer in gender equality, today it remains true to that legacy, sponsoring 23 sports,11 for men and 12 for women. The NCAC is respected for the strength of its member institutions — all of which have Phi Beta Kappa chapters. In its most recent college rankings, U. S. News & World Report recognized all 10 members as top-tier liberal arts colleges, the formation of the NCAC is announced at joint news conferences in Cleveland, Columbus and Pittsburgh on February 1983. John Skipper currently serves as president of ESPN, a position he has held since January 1,2012, as of February 2015, ESPN is available to approximately 94,396,000 paid television households in the United States. In 2011, ESPNs history and rise was chronicled by These Guys Have All the Fun, Bill Rasmussen conceived the concept of ESPN in late May 1978, after he was fired from his job with the World Hockey Associations New England Whalers. One of the first steps in Bill and his son Scotts process was finding land to build the channels broadcasting facilities, the Rasmussens first rented office space in Plainville, Connecticut. However, the plan to base ESPN there was put on hold because a local ordinance prohibiting buildings from bearing rooftop satellite dishes and this helped the credibility of the fledgling company, however there were still many doubters to the viability of their sports channel concept. California University of Pennsylvania is a public university located in California, Pennsylvania, United States. Founded in 1852, it is a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, the university offers bachelors, masters, and, as of July 2015, doctoral degrees. Cal Us enrollment was approximately 9,400 in 2010 and has increased the past few years, the main campus consists of about 38 buildings situated on 92 acres. Another 9-acre facility is located near the main campus, an additional 98-acre recreation complex, George H. Roadman University Park, is located one mile from campus and includes a football stadium, various sports facilities, and picnic facilities. The Universitys student association also owns 98 acres at SAI Park, Cal U has a satellite campus in Canonsburg as well as a large virtual school. Cal U traces its roots back to 1852, when the community of California spent tax money. In 1864, it purchased 10 acres and moved to what is now the center of its present location, in 1928 the school restored a full 4-year curriculum and was renamed the California State Teachers College. The programs offered were expanded over time and broadened beyond teacher training, in 1962, the school added a graduate program. The school became a part of the State System of Higher Education on July 1,1983, at the same time, it was granted university status under its current name, California University of Pennsylvania. California University has recently received state and private grants to rebuild the campus, since 2000, six new residence halls have been completed, each with private bathrooms. A short drive or bus ride from campus, Cal U has apartment-like housing at the Vulcan Village complex, the Elmo Natali Student Center, operated by the Student Association, Inc. is the main hub of student activities on campus. The Union was recently renovated as of the summer of 2015, planning to add new dining, the Eberly Science and Technology Center opened in 1999, while the new Duda Hall opened in 2007. Steele Auditorium underwent a renovation and expansion project, reopening in the Fall of 2007. The Heron Hall recreation facility underwent significant renovation and expansion through the Fall and Spring semesters of 2008, opening to student and faculty use on Homecoming Day 2009. The new facility features a running track, cardio equipment, free weight equipment, weight machines. By far the largest project at the University was the building of the new Convocation Center, opened in 2011, the building covers 142,000 sq ft, while seating over 6,000. In Dayton, Father Meyer met local farmer John Stuart, who had lost his infant daughter Mary Louisa to cholera the year before, heartbroken, Stuart and his wife wanted to sell their Dewberry Farm property and return to Europe. Stuart accepted a St. Joseph medal and a promise of $12,000 at 6 percent interest, the property included vineyards, an orchard, a mansion, various farm buildings, and the grave of Stuarts daughter, which Meyer promised to maintain. Just a few later, the University of Dayton had its beginnings on 1 July 1850. In September, the first boarding students arrived and classes moved to the mansion, five years later, the school burned to the ground, but classes resumed within months. By 1860, when Brother Zehler became president, the enrollment was nearly 100 students, the Civil War had little direct effect on the school because most of the students were too young to serve. College preparatory classes started in 1861 along with a novitiate and school for Marianist candidates, in 1882 the university was incorporated and empowered to confer collegiate degrees by the State of Ohio. When floodwaters struck the community during the Great Dayton Flood of 1913, St. Marys College was uniquely situated and equipped to provide relief to flood victims. Because students had not returned to campus from Easter break, the college was amply stocked with food, the colleges kitchen provided meals to Miami Valley Hospital and provided 12,000 pounds of provisions to St. Elizabeth Hospital. The first night,400 refugees took shelter at St. Marys College, in all, the college assisted 800 refugees. Known at various times as St. Marys School, St. Marys Institute, in 1923, the University adopted the Dayton Flyers nickname for its athletic teams and adopted a university seal with the motto, Pro Deo et Patria, Latin for For God and Country. In the 1930s, women were admitted on a basis with men,40 years before most Catholic universities allowed women. The school expanded its programs in science, engineering, and the professions and continued to attract the children and grandchildren of Catholic immigrants. The growing Catholic presence in Dayton during the 1920s drew the hostility of the Ku Klux Klan, on 19 December 1923,12 bombs exploded throughout the campus and an 8-foot cross was set on fire. The University of Akron is a public research university in Akron, Ohio, United States. The university is part of the University System of Ohio, as a STEM-focused institution, it focuses on industries such as polymers, advanced materials, and engineering. The University of Akron offers about 200 undergraduate and more than 100 graduate majors and has an enrollment of approximately 27,000 students. The universitys College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering is housed in a 12-story reflective glass building near downtown Akron on the edge of the main campus. UA’s Archives of the History of American Psychology is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, in addition, the university hosts nursing programs in affiliation with Lorain County Community College. It was announced that the location would be given to those who could find an appropriate location, john R. Buchtel, a prominent Akron businessman and Universalist, promptly contributed $25,000 to the endowment fund and $6,000 to the building fund. This led other Akronites to donate, setting the goal and securing Akron as the location for Buchtel College, john R. Buchtel continued to be the colleges most significant contributor, giving $500,000 over his lifetime, approximately equivalent to $16 million today. When the university opened in 1872 it was a single-building campus, george Washington Crouse donated $10,000 of the $20,000 needed to build a new gymnasium, completed in 1888. It was named Crouse Gymnasium in his honor, and was known as the finest gym west of the Alleghenies, tragedy struck the small college on December 20,1899, when Old Buchtel burned to the ground. Insurance only covered $65,000 of the estimated $100,000 in loss, while new campus buildings were being constructed, the Crouse Gymnasium was divided into seven classrooms and served as the college until a new Buchtel Hall was opened in 1901. The new Buchtel Hall, which itself was gutted by fire in 1971, in 1913, Buchtel College trustees transferred the institution and its assets to the city of Akron, and Buchtel College became the Municipal University of Akron. At this time, the enrollment was 198 students, tax money levied for the school and Akrons growing population led to strong growth for the university. Over the next decades the university continued to add new buildings to accommodate its growing student population, acquiring more land through purchases. In 1963, Governor Jim Rhodes approved the university as a state-assisted institution, enrollment in 1964 was 10,000 students. In 1967, it became a state university, providing its current name as The University of Akron. In 2015,25,117 students were enrolled at the University of Akron, during the tenure of its 15th president, Luis M. Proenza, the University of Akron underwent a $627 million construction project, called A New Landscape for Learning. A new football stadium, InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field, was constructed on campus. Anthony Duvale Grant is an American basketball coach who is the head mens basketball coach at the University of Dayton. Prior to that, he was the coach at Virginia Commonwealth University from 2006 to 2009. Prior to becoming the VCU head coach, he was an assistant coach at the University of Florida from 1996 to 2006. As a sophomore, Grant averaged 10.7 points a game and 6.5 rebounds a game and the Flyers again made it to the NCAA Tournament. As a junior, the 65 Grant moved from power forward to small forward and averaged 7.1 points a game and 4.8 rebounds a contest while the team advanced to the National Invitation Tournament. As a senior, Grant was named a team captain awarded team MVP, in his 105 appearances, Grant registered 11.6 points and 6.7 rebounds each time out. In 1987, Grant spent a year playing for the Miami Tropics of the United States Basketball League, in 1987, Grant became an assistant coach and math teacher at Miami Senior High School under Marcos Shaky Rodriguez. The Miami native served for ten years as an assistant to Billy Donovan at the University of Florida, in the spring of 2002, Grant was elevated to the title of Associate Head Coach after serving as an assistant for his first six seasons. The Gators were 226–98 during Grants 10-year stint in Gainesville, prior to the University of Florida, Grant served as an assistant to Donovan for two years at Marshall University helping them to a 35–20 record. Grant also served as an assistant coach during the 1993–94 season at Stetson, Grant led VCU to a 79–77 upset of 6th seeded Duke to reach the 2nd round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament. Two of Grants VCU players were drafted as first round picks in the 2009 and 2010 NBA drafts. On March 27,2009 Grant agreed in principle to become the head mens basketball coach at the University of Alabama. They would go on to lose in the quarterfinals to #2 Kentucky, Grant also got his first signature win, when Alabama defeated #12 Kentucky in Coleman Coliseum, 68–66. Dick Vitale has noted Grant as one of his Coaches on the Rise and he guided Alabama to the NIT Final in Madison Square Garden in only his second year. Grant reached the 2012 NCAA Tournament in his third season and that marked Alabamas first appearance since 2006. However, it was short-lived, the Tide lost to Creighton in the round of the tournament. In Grants fourth season at the Capstone, the Crimson Tide started strong, the Tide finished a surprising 12–6 in SEC play, tied for 2nd place in the league. After winning one game in the SEC Basketball Tournament, the Tide lost to Florida the next day, Grants team lost to Miami in the National Invitation Tournament quarterfinals by a score of 58–57

The Alabama Crimson Tide mens basketball team represents the University of Alabama in NCAA Division I mens basketball. The program has a history of being among the best of the Southeastern Conference, in the conference it trails only long-time basketball powerhouse Kentucky in basketball wins and SEC tournament titles, and is third behind Kentucky and LSU in SEC regular season conference titles. Alabama was retroactively recognized as the pre-NCAA Tournament national champion for the 1929–30 season by the Premo-Porretta Power Poll, the team is currently led by head coach Avery Johnson. The mens basketball program has spent most of its history in the shadow of Alabamas football team, under former coach Mark Gottfried, the team achieved a No.1 national ranking briefly in 2003, and competed for a NCAA Regional Tournament Championship in 2004. The program was notable as a conference basketball contender in the 1980s and early 1990s under the direction of coach Wimp Sanderson. Alabama has eight NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearances, in the 2003–04 season, the team defeated #1-seeded Stanford in the NCAA Tournament, and reached the Elite Eight round where they lost to the eventual national champion, Connecticut. Other coaches include John Dee, Floyd Burdette, and Charles A. Bernier, rupp recommended C. M. Newton, a former backup player at Kentucky who had been at Transylvania University for 12 years. In twelve seasons at Alabama, Newton led the Tide to a record of 211–123, the Crimson Tide won three straight SEC titles under Newton, the only program besides Kentucky to accomplish this feat. Newton also guided Alabama to four NIT and two NCAA Mens Division I Championship tournament berths, prompting the school to name a recruiting suite in his honor in 2006. Just as he did at Transylvania, Newton recruited Alabamas first black player, Wendell Hudson, in 1969, Newton resigned as head coach after the 1980–81 season to become assistant commissioner of the SEC. He was succeeded by his top assistant, Wimp Sanderson and he had been at Alabama since 1960 as a graduate assistant to Newtons predecessor, Hayden Riley, he was named a full-fledged assistant in 1961. In 12 years as head coach his teams averaged 21.8 wins a year, with a 267–119 record and they played in one NIT and eight NCAA tournaments making the Sweet 16 five times. Sanderson is the coach in Alabama history to win 200 or more games in his first 10 years. He was the SEC Coach of the Year in 1987,1989 and 1990, Sanderson was best known for wearing garish plaid sports jackets on the sidelines. At one point, Coleman Coliseum was known as the Plaid Palace, as an assistant, he had the opportunity to coach such All-SEC performers as Robert Horry, James Hollywood Robinson and Latrell Sprewell. When Sanderson left Alabama following the 1992 season, Hobbs was named head coach, in his first season, the Tide finished 16–13 and advanced to the NIT. In 1994 and 1995, Alabama recorded 20-win seasons and advanced to the NCAA Tournament behind the play of future NBA All-Star Antonio McDyess, in 1996, Hobbs led UA to a 19–13 mark and a berth in the NIT Final Four. Larry Sanders is an American professional basketball player for the Canton Charge of the NBA Development League, on assignment from the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association. He played power forward for the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams before declaring himself eligible for the 2010 NBA draft and was selected 15th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks, Sanders was not playing basketball in the ninth grade, the private school he attended did not offer sports. Standing 61 when he transferred to Port St. Lucie High School, Kareem Rodriguez, Sanders grew to 64 after the 10th grade and 66 after the 11th grade. Shortly after his growth spurt and subsequent years playing high school basketball, Rodriguez alerted Tony Pujol, Sanders sprouted further to 69 in his high school senior year. Sanders liked the idea of learning under then VCU head coach Anthony Grant, Sanders began drawing statewide attention when he helped lead Port St. Lucie to the Class 5A state semifinals his junior season. He averaged 18.9 points and 13 rebounds his senior season, leading Port St. Lucie to the District 13-5A championship and he committed to the Rams just as some major schools began to show interest. For his first two seasons for VCU, Sanders played 2nd star to guard Eric Maynor and he excelled in that role, utilizing his size and athleticism to disrupt teams defensively. As a sophomore, he helped the Rams into the 2009 NCAA Tournament against the UCLA Bruins, Sanders went on to have a more prominent role in his junior season after Maynor was drafted into the NBA. Larry Sanders announced in April 2010 after his junior year that he was departing VCU early to enter the NBA Draft, Sanders was chosen by the Milwaukee Bucks with the 15th overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft. On July 8,2010, he signed a multi-year, rookie scaled contract with the Bucks, on February 20,2011, he was assigned to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA D-League. On February 26,2011, he was recalled by the Bucks, on November 30,2012, he recorded his first career triple-double with 10 points,12 rebounds and 10 blocks in a loss to Minnesota. He finished the second in blocks per game behind Serge Ibaka. Sanders also finished third in voting for the NBA Most Improved Player Award, after Paul George, on August 20,2013, Sanders signed a four-year, $44 million contract extension with the Bucks. In December 2013, Sanders was sidelined for 25 games after sustaining a torn ligament in his thumb in a night club altercation, Sanders was fined for the two municipal citations of disorderly conduct and assault and battery charges, but police did not pursue further criminal charges. On March 20,2014, it was announced that Sanders would miss the rest of the 2013–14 season due to a fractured orbital bone. On April 4,2014, Sanders was given a suspension for violating the NBAs drug policy after testing positive for marijuana. Sanders again violated the NBAs drug policy during the 2014–15 season and was suspended without pay for a minimum of ten games on January 16,2015. The 2010 NBA draft was held on June 24,2010, at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York. The draft, which started at 7,00 pm Eastern Daylight Time, was broadcast in the United States on ESPN, in this draft, National Basketball Association teams took turns selecting amateur U. S. college basketball players and other eligible players, including international players. This draft set a record with five players being drafted from the school in the first round. The players were John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Patrick Patterson, Eric Bledsoe and this draft also marked the second time that an NBA D-League player was drafted, with the first case coming in 2008. The Washington Wizards, who won the lottery on May 18,2010. The Philadelphia 76ers, who beat the odds in the draft lottery to obtain the second pick. The New Jersey Nets, who had the worst win-loss record in the previous season, the 2010 NBA draft is the last draft conducted at Madison Square Garden until 2014. These players were not selected in the 2010 NBA Draft, but have played in at least one NBA game, the basic eligibility rules for the draft are, All drafted players must be at least 19 years old during the calendar year of the draft. In terms of dates, players eligible for the 2010 draft must be born on or before December 31,1991, the basic requirement for automatic eligibility for a U. S. player is the completion of his college eligibility. Players who meet the CBA definition of international players are eligible if their 22nd birthday falls during or before the calendar year of the draft. U. S. players who were at least one year removed from their high school graduation and have played professionally with a team outside the NBA were also automatically eligible. Former high school player Latavious Williams meets these criteria, having graduated high school in 2009, skipped college basketball, a player who is not automatically eligible must declare his eligibility for the draft by notifying the NBA offices in writing no later than 60 days before the draft. For the 2010 draft, this fell on April 25. Under NCAA rules that take effect with this draft, they only had until May 8 to withdraw from the draft, previously, players who declared for the draft could withdraw as late as 10 days before the draft and still maintain college eligibility. This year, a total of 80 collegiate players and 23 international players declared as early entry candidates, at the withdrawal deadline,48 early entry candidates withdrew from the draft, leaving 50 collegiate players and five international players as the early entry candidates for the draft. A player who has hired an agent will forfeit his college eligibility. Also, while the CBA allows a player to withdraw from the draft twice and this second provision affected Mac Koshwal, Gani Lawal, and Patrick Patterson, all of whom declared for and withdrew from the 2009 draft. The lottery determined the three teams that would obtain the first three picks on the draft, the remaining first-round picks and the second-round picks were assigned to teams in reverse order of their win-loss record in the previous season

The Milwaukee Bucks are an American professional basketball franchise based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Bucks compete in the National Basketball Association as a club of the leagues Eastern Conference Central Division. The team was founded in 1968 as a team. It was a conclusion that the first pick in the draft would be Lew Alcindor of UCLA. The Bucks won the flip, but had to win a bidding war with the upstart American Basketball Association to secure him. Despite the Bucks stroke of fortune in landing Alcindor, no one expected what happened in 1969–70 and they finished with a 56–26 record – a nearly exact reversal of the previous year and good enough for the second-best record in the league, behind the New York Knicks. The 29-game improvement was the best in league history – a record which would stand for 10 years until the Boston Celtics jumped from 29 wins in 1978–79 to 61 in 1979–80. The Bucks defeated the Philadelphia 76ers in five games in the Eastern semifinals, Alcindor was a runaway selection for NBA Rookie of the Year. The following season, the Bucks got a gift when they acquired Oscar Robertson, known as the Big O. Subsequently, in only their season, the Bucks finished 66–16 – the second-most wins in NBA history at the time. During the regular season, the Bucks recorded a then-NBA record 20-game win streak and they then steamrolled through the playoffs with a dominating 12–2 record, winning the NBA Championship on April 30,1971, by sweeping the Baltimore Bullets in four games

Virginia is a state located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, as well as in the historic Southeast. The state government was ranked most effective by the Pew Center on the States in both 2005 and 2008 and it is unique in how it treats cities and counties equally, manages local roads, and prohibits its governors from serving consecutive terms. Virginias economy changed from agricultural to industrial during the 1960s and 1970s. Virginia has an area of 42,774.2 square miles, including 3,180.13 square miles of water. Virginias boundary with Maryland and Washington, D. C. extends to the mark of the south shore of the Potomac River. The southern border is defined as the 36° 30′ parallel north, the border with Tennessee was not settled until 1893, when their dispute was brought to the U. S. Supreme Court. The Chesapeake Bay separates the portion of the Commonwealth from the two-county peninsula of Virginias Eastern Shore. The bay was formed from the river valleys of the Susquehanna River. Many of Virginias rivers flow into the Chesapeake Bay, including the Potomac, Rappahannock, York, and James, the Tidewater is a coastal plain between the Atlantic coast and the fall line. It includes the Eastern Shore and major estuaries of Chesapeake Bay, the Piedmont is a series of sedimentary and igneous rock-based foothills east of the mountains which were formed in the Mesozoic era. The region, known for its clay soil, includes the Southwest Mountains around Charlottesville. The Utah Jazz are an American professional basketball team based in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Jazz compete in the National Basketball Association as a club of the leagues Western Conference Northwest Division. Since 1991, the team has played its games at Vivint Smart Home Arena. The franchise began play in 1974 as the New Orleans Jazz, a team based in New Orleans. The Jazz were one of the least successful teams in the league in their early years, although 10 seasons elapsed before the Jazz qualified for their first playoff appearance in 1984, they did not miss the playoffs again until 2004. During the late 1980s, John Stockton and Karl Malone arose as the players for the team. Both Stockton and Malone moved on in 2003, after missing the playoffs for three consecutive seasons the Jazz returned to prominence under the on-court leadership of point guard Deron Williams. However, partway through the 2010–11 NBA season, the Jazz began restructuring after Sloans retirement, the team has made the playoffs once since then, in 2012 under coach Tyrone Corbin. Quin Snyder was hired as coach in June 2014. Valued in 2015 at $850 million by Forbes, the Jazz rank as the 20th most valuable franchise in the NBA ahead of the Indiana Pacers, on June 7,1974, the New Orleans Jazz were admitted as an expansion franchise into the National Basketball Association. Team officials selected the name because of its definition in the dictionary, the team began its inaugural season in New Orleans in the 1974–75 season. Maravich struggled with injuries from that season onward. Venue issues were a problem for the team while it was based in New Orleans. Later, they played games in the cavernous Louisiana Superdome, but things were no better, due to demand for the stadium, onerous lease terms. Years later, founding owner Sam Battistone claimed that there was no plan in case the Jazz ever qualified for the playoffs. The pick would have been the Jazzs had they not traded it to acquire Gail Goodrich two years earlier, despite being barely competitive, the Jazz drew well during their first five years. However, by 1979 the franchise was sinking financially, barry Mendelson, the teams executive vice president for most of the early years, said one factor in the financial trouble was an 11 percent amusement tax, highest in the U. S. at the time. Maynor led the team to the North Carolina state championship game, for his outstanding performance during the season Maynor was named to the 2004/05 North Carolina All State Basketball team by the sports website NCPreps. com. Eric Maynor was a player in the mens basketball program at Virginia Commonwealth University. He graduated from VCU with a degree in Sports Management, Maynor played in 29 games as a Freshman at VCU, cracking the teams starting lineup by the end of the season. Maynor averaged 4.7 points and 2.2 assists in an average of 15.7 minutes per game during this first collegiate campaign. On March 15,2007, Maynor scored 22 points, including the game-winning shot, Maynors last-minute heroics are also what helped VCU to overcome George Mason in the 2007 Colonial Athletic Association championship game. Wooden Award, Maynor helped VCU win the CAA regular-season title, though the team fell in the semi-finals of the conference tournament to William & Mary. He was selected as the CAA Player of the Year and selected to the All-CAA first team, the Rams failed to reach the NCAA Tournament and went on to play in the NIT, where they lost in the first round against the University of Alabama at Birmingham. During the 2008–09 season, Eric Maynor became VCUs all-time leader in assists, on February 28,2009, Maynor became the leading scorer in VCU history with a floater against Georgia State. As of March 10,2009, he had scored a school record 1,929 points, Maynor also led VCU to a second CAA title during his career, scoring 25 points in a 71–50 victory over George Mason on March 9,2009, at the Richmond Coliseum. The Rams went on to the 2009 NCAA Tournament but lost to UCLA when Maynor missed a buzzer-beater to win the game, Maynor was drafted 20th overall by the Utah Jazz in the 2009 NBA draft. Most of its members are public universities, and the conference is headquartered in Richmond. The CAA was historically a Southern conference until the addition of five northeastern schools after the turn of the 21st century, the CAA was founded in 1979 as the ECAC South basketball league. It was renamed the Colonial Athletic Association in 1985 when it added championships in other sports, as of 2006, it organizes championships in 21 mens and womens sports. The addition of Northeastern University in 2005 gave the conference the NCAA minimum of six football programs needed to sponsor football, for the 2007 football season, all of the Atlantic 10 Conferences football programs joined the CAA football conference, as agreed upon in May 2005. The CAA has expanded in recent years, following the exits of longtime members such as the United States Naval Academy, the University of Richmond, East Carolina University, and American University. In 2001, the conference added four additional universities, Towson University, Drexel University, Hofstra University. Four years later the league expanded again when Georgia State University and Northeastern University joined, Virginia Commonwealth University left for the Atlantic 10 Conference in July 2012. More changes came in 2013, Old Dominion University left for Conference USA, Georgia State joined the Sun Belt Conference, in 2006, George Mason became the first CAA team to reach the Final Four.
